This location is a great addition to the University Village neighborhood. If you are looking for a great spot that isn't too noisy and have great menu items, this is the place to go. Both my visits were pleasant as the dishes I ordered were both flavorful. The decor in the restaurant is awesome and roomy. There are plenty of seats along with a bar where you can just hang out and watch a game. The service staff are attentive and friendly. They talk and describe each dish like they have tried it. I love that. Their prices are on the higher side, and some of the dishes you order may not look like big portions. Don't let that fool you because I also leave this place full and I would say I eat more than the average person. The cornbread they give you after you place your order is amazing! This is a different type of restaurant that you have to try.

The first time I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and I could not find anything wrong with my meal. DEEEE-LISH! moist meat, warm, soft bun, fresh fries. YUM! However, the second time we ate here the pulled pork was flavorless and the fries were cold. Not so deeee-lish. The third time was yesterday. NOT HAPPY . Not only was the pork dry, but they didn't give me any sauce, and the bottom bun was hard as a rock. Unfortunately, my husband experienced the same thing with his choice of meal, and by the third time we ordered he changed items. (good for him) If there is ONE thing I expect it is consistency. NOT going to get that here! Three strikes and your OUT!

Moxee is a fantastic restaurant and brewery. It is pretty affordable and the food is spectacular. The pulled pork sandwiches, garlic mashed potatoes and seafood are all delicious. Corn bread is served before your meal which is a nice surprise. Also, the atmosphere is perfect, it is very romantic and on certain nights there are jazz bands playing. I highly recommend trying this restaurant out, I for one will be returning regularly!

We were super excited to see a brewery/restaurant coming to the neighborhood. My husband and I went opening week and had an amazing meal with some great brews. So for my birthday yesterday I wanted to bring my family there so they could try it too. And we had another fantastic dinner. The waitress was super sweet and friendly. The food came out quickly and it was all delicious. The waitress even brought me some birthday cake. Thanks!

Went here for lunch with family and really enjoyed it. Great selection of beers on tap (2 of them are self-brewed). All the food was really tasty and prices were reasonable. Service was quick and friendly. Very spacious dining area. Great place to stop in for a beer or a full meal. Had plenty of TVs to watch the Bears game. Also has a garage close by that is only $2 for parking

Decided to check this out with a girlfriend of mine. I usually have my to go places in the area but decided I needed to try something new. We came on a Thursday evening around 5:30pm. We were the only customers there. I'd imagine it's a little empty since UIC is not in session yet. The place is pretty big and you can see the section where they brew their beer. They have a pretty good extensive menu, however, they are known for their bbq. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the bbq mood. My friend got the mac and cheese and some brussel sprout dish. She liked it. I got the shrimp and crawfish poboy with a side of mac and cheese. I liked it...and my husband LOVED my leftovers. I definitely have to come back with the hubby so we can try out more things on the menu.

EVERYTHING on the menu is good!! Great beer selection and great service! Nick is a superb waiter!! They brew their own beer too. Great for families or friends night out.

I came in for the first time this evening. I totally would go back, and I encourage you to try them too. I was solo so I ate at the bar - but in good company with very friendly patrons, and Greg, bar manager, and also Phil, brewer, took great care of me. On Greg's recommendation I ordered the etoufee with tilapia. It was delicious - the tilapia and shrimp were very moist and fresh, and the etoufee base had great spice and flavor depth. I also ordered their Kolsch and Pale Ales - I was really impressed. Their menu offers great variety ranging from healthy salads, to smokehouse favorites to gumbo. Summary - food and beer were delicious, but their service, and friendly atmosphere were really unique and inviting.

They have some great smokehouse BBQ and their beers are bang-on. Soon to be brewing in house. Support your local brew pubs!!

Didn't try the beer but the food was really good. There were three of us that had three totally different things and all were good. I highly recommend the mac and cheese as a side. It is delicious!

Came here last minute in the afternoon for a late lunch. My cousin and I actually tried going to a few other restaurants on the same strip on Maxwell as first choices, but considering it being at 3pm, they were closed or in the process of closing, so we came here as a last resort, since we already parked and didn't want to travel anywhere else too far. I ordered the Three Sisters (veggie) and it was actually pretty tasty. The portion size was really generous, as the description looked on the menu. I couldn't finish, and had the other half for lunch the next day. The garlic sauce was also yummy, and not heavy as it looks. Service was efficient and friendly. We sat outside, and our water glasses were always being refilled, even when they were more than half full. Always appreciate that. I wouldn't mind going back and trying their dinner options, especially the alcohol selection, which I did not try for lunch. It'd be nice if they have more veggie options as well other than salads.

Complimentary corn bread may look ordinary, but is delicious. Got the chips & guacamole....guacamole was creamy & tasty. Nice crunch on the chips. Shared the fish & chips - 4 nice size pieces with lots of fries. The batter was light & crispy...true beer battered fish. Too full for dessert, but they sounded great. Lukas provided amazing service!

The food is delicious-the pulled Brisket sandwich, sublime. The beer list is impressive and the vibe is cool. Will come back.

Feeling down? Feeling low? Think you can't go on? Then get your patootie over to Moxee and order the Mac and Cheese (along with other things). So rich and stupendous that you will think your own Grandmother is patting you on the back saying "now, now, everything will be all right". I feel I can really write about this food BECAUSE I AM FROM THE CAJUN COUNTRY! Next, order the pulled pork. We got it in a sandwich. A soft, beautiful bun chock full of smoky, juicy goodness. (Better than County). Served with a delightful cole slaw and hot and mild sauce in squeezers on the side. Reminded me of stopping by the side of the road at Billy Bob's bbq smoker, but a whole lot nicer. The crab cakes: Don't be concerned that they are not the consistency of all the other crab cakes served in Chicago. These are the real thing you get down south. We called them "stuffed crabs" when I grew up. They were served in the crab shell and baked to a crispy top. These are served as regular crab cakes, but loaded with that cajun seasoning and Old Bay, sauteed perfectly crispy on top and bottom. What a memory this brought back. I believe the corn bread is a nod to the Yankees-- a little sweet (serving warm would be a good idea). The gumbo was loaded with sausage and chicken and the base was a beautiful brown from a perfect roux. Personally, I like a little less file, but i get it! And enjoyed it! Friday night live music was a threesome playing "Delta Jazz" and made for an enjoyable evening. There is a dog-friendly outdoor seating area. So happy Moxee is in my neighborhood. Can't wait to go back and try those bbq ribs.

Great gem of a place. The BBQ is excellent (had the pulled pork sandwich with fries and slaw. Cornbread was moist and flavorful and the best of all was the beer. They brew their own, it is high quality, and reasonably priced. Tried three different types in our group and all were flavorful and great! Our server was kind and attentive the entire night. Parking in nearby garage is also free for the first 2 hrs which makes this easy to get to. Will be back soon!

This is a great new option in university villiage. We went to eat but it's a brew pub so if you like beer, you'll love it here. We went with our young son and they were very accommodating. And, because the place is big and roomy, he wasn't bothering any nearby tables with his happy squeals. We had the popcorn crawfish and the pork belly to start. Yum. The pork belly especially. I'm usually disappointed in that when I order it - it's often so fatty. This was nice and meaty. Our entrees were solid with good portions and the sides were wonderful. My husband even loved the coffee. They have a great beer list and will be brewing their own very soon. There is a parking garage about 1/2 block up and parking is cheap ($2 for several hours).

We had a very pleasant experience at Moxee. The service was outstanding. Their food was incredibly good. We ordered two sandwiches and one of their own beers as well as the one Mac n Cheese. The later is one of the best we've ever had. The overall experience was superb!!! A very pleasant afternoon that ended with a nice discovery.

Great in house brews and many others on tap. Excellent service, good food. Chipotle smoked pork tacos were delicious, as was the guacamole and butcher and baker. Look forward to trying more. Fantastic addition to the neighborhood.

Can't complain. Great comfort food. Open late and inexpensive. If your hungry go for their chicken and rib combo with 2 sides and you'll leave unbuttoning your pants

Food was excellent, service rocked as well. It's been a while since I said: "wow" so many times during a meal: Brussels and belly, steak tips, cornbread, farmhouse salad with blackened salmon.

GREAT Food...solid beer list too! Shrimp po'boy is amazing! This is exactly the kind of place our neighborhood needed! Thanks!

Tried for first time this weekend. The ribs were good, but not as tender as I prefer my ribs to be. Spicy bbq sauce was great. Cornbread was amazing. Service was friendly. Prices were reasonable. Other items on menu sounded delicious--will return to try more items!

This is a fantastic restaurant/bar/soon-to-be-brewery! I was craving a Po'boy, and a coworker steered me to this place. I was not disappointed. The food was tasty, the selection of quality craft beer was amazing, and the bartender was fantastic. I'll be sure to come back again and again.

My husband & I had dinner here & it's our new favorite spot. There was plenty of outdoor seating & the service was fast & friendly. When you first sit down you get complimentary corn bread, which is delicious. We shared the shrimp & grits appetizer- awesome w/little pieces of pork belly on it. I also couldn't get enough of the polenta fries. Both our dishes were great I had the shrimp étouffée & he had the steak tips. For dessert was the Michigan blueberry crumble, yum!! We can't wait to go back & try the BBQ!

  • Oliver R.

For a brand new place they are doing pretty well. Came here after a movie for dinner and drinks. They have a couple of their own beers as well as a small selection of other crafts. I had the Ratmandhu I think. For dinner I had the ribs, which were better than some ribs I'd had at BBQ restaurants recently. There was plenty of room when we got there, which I hope doesn't become a problem for them. Service was very polite.

The beer is delicious... But I'm here for the food and cocktails tonight. Our group of five is enjoying planked salmon, the pulled pork, ribs, steak tips.... All to rave reviews. Perfect on a cold night. Service is friendly and attentive. Easy parking on the street or in the (free?) lot across the street.

A friend and I walked up to University Village for lunch. We spotted that Moxee was a new place so we decided to try it. It was really good! I had the brisket and he had a Shrimp Po' Boy. We both really enjoyed our meals. The coleslaw and fries we also great. We both tried thier brewed beers and they were great! The staff accommodated us with my stroller with my 8 month old in it also. Kate was our server, she was excellent and was very helpful with picking items and guiding us thru the menu. I would recommend this place for anyone to try. We defiantly will be back because there were several other items we want to try! Only down fall was no changing table in the bathroom, but then again it is a brewery. LOL. People, go check this place out and enjoy some good food and ask for Kate!

GREAT food, beer, atmosphere, and service. What else could you ask for?! We stumbles upon this place on accident. They had awesome alternative radio playing, our server was patient with some picky people in our party, the food came out quick, and we even were given a coupon at the door! I highly recommend this brewery/restaurant fusion for your next dining destination.

They get a pass for being new. Server had to check on a few questions posed. The food was quickly served, almost too quick. Nice atmosphere. Beer list needs some work. The kids menu for my 6.5 year old was sophisticated beyond the typical drab options for kids. His brisket had a mild flavor, expected more. My pulled pork plate was hefty and sides good. The sauces are tasty. Needed it though for what was a bland pulled pork. Lacked the flavor I have tasted at other city BBQ joints. Living in the neighborhood, I will be back hoping for more.

Went to Moxee on a Friday night (5.30.2015) at 11:15pm after checking yelp and seeing that they are open until 1am. When I arrived to the restaurant an employee was locking the front door and informed me that the manager instructed him to close early. I called the restaurant to speak to the manager and ask why they were closing so early. His response was "because." I then asked why did the sign say 1am if they were closing at 11:20pm. He told me they can stay open until 1am but he chose to close now. He then came out of the restaurant and addressed me in a rude manner before reluctantly letting me in the restaurant. Honestly I'm afraid to eat my order. The food is great but with leadership like this Moxee is destined to fail.

So happy to see Moxee finally open its doors in University Village. The North has their Revolution and Goose Island, but we all know South Loopers are thirsty too! Reclaimed wood, post-industrial decoration, spacious interior - a refined design that is tried and true. The staff is fun, accommodating and professional. The sheer breadth of the menu is impressive: New American with a Creole drawl. There is an awesome beer selection, fully dedicated to Chicago-based breweries. As for the in-house brewery - only two beers are currently on tap. The Kolsch is smooth & earthy and the Pale Ale is clean & composed - can't ask for more. There is also a double IPA in the works - can't wait to return!

  • Carita B.

This place has a great concept but some things are out of place. The good things are: In house brewery, the beers are good and affordable. The waitress, bartender great customer service. Make you feel welcomed. The drinks are delicious. The bad is the food. They want a southern style menu and the cook is not from the south. The crab cakes taste pre made, corn bread isn't hot and it ain't Jiffy. The food presentation is poor quality because the chef is not from the south. How, do I know because the food is not that good. The bathroom is dark and creepy. It's clean though...needs a makeover. I would just go for drinks. They need a restaurant makeover.

Came here for lunch once and ordered the fish + chips and the BBQ sampler. Both were really good, but nothing I'm rushing back for. I would definitely go back to try different things though because it is a great location with their own beers

I want to like it. Brewery, nice room, food decent. But the service needs better. Just walked out after a 10 minute wait to order. It's lunchtime, I have to go back to work. Never seem to have more than one waiter. Another time for lunch waited an eternity for food to come out. Suggest more and better staff. And less employee chit chat

Smoked meats were delicious! The corn bread is great too, has a bit of a bite. The sweet potato fries were the best of I have had! We all ordered different meals and we all were pleased. Peach cobbler was good too! Will be back.

After eating the brisket I was disappointed :/ It was tough & chewy & lacked taste. It looked more like shredded chicken than brisket. It's such a bummer because I like Moxee .

  • Zach J.

This was all around an excellent dining experience. The complimentary cornbread was just amazing. It was perfectly moist, in face, one of the most moisty cornbreads I have ever eaten! We had the shrimp and grits for a starter, and it was packed with flavor especially the pork belly that came with it, and the sauce was out of this world. For the main entree I got the shrimp and crawfish Po' Boy. Now this was a very good quality sandwhich. Served on a dense and fresh French bread with sauce on it; however, it was not my thing. If the sauce was not on it, I would have liked it more. Do not get me wrong, the sauce was good quality but for my tastes it was too sweet, even though the sweetness was extremely subtle I just have a sensitivity to the slightest sweetness on my meat. My personal opionion will not affect my review, I just wish it was a spicy sauce. The mac and cheese I got with it was really creamy and amazing and not too salty or greasy like other baked macs out there. The cole slaw was also really fresh tasting with cilantro in it. There was even a slight spice to it. We split an order of Polenta fries, my oh my were those really damn good! I will be back here for sure to have the pastrami sandwhich. The other party I was with had that and I got to have a bite and I was floored at how good it was! This is probably the best pastrami I ever tasted! I also want to try the Texas sheet cake.

  • C J.

Below average food. We tried the pulled brisket...didn't even resemble brisket, was more like pulled salty stringy bad meat. The pulled pork sandwich had a great bun, too bad the pork was a complete let down. Sauce, yeah...another miss - I've had better BBQ suave out of a bottle from the store. The garlic mash and the Mac and cheese were both fairly tasty. Overall a major bummer - way better food at green street meats or Blackwood.

Fantastic lunch soup and sandwich special... not your run of the mill soup & sandwich. I had the shrimp and crawdad po'boy wich was not huge (Not sure but think the special is a half portion) however the seafood was overflowing off of the thing - ate half of it with a fork and that ain't a complaint. Came with fries (which I paired with the house spicy BBQ sauce - a great call), a pickle spear and a healthy portion of some fantastic coleslaw with a bit of a kick. For the soup I got the seafood gumbo... I expected something fish-tasting with some vegetables... what I got was to a much higher standard a good thumb-sized crab claw was sticking out of the cup and it had healthy chunks of fish and shrimp in a richly flavorful broth. Everything else was good but the seafood gumbo was GREAT. my lunch buddy had the same special but with the turkey sandwich and chicken and andouille gumbo. She was equally impressed with both and the turkey sandwich had a ton of flavorful mushrooms on it and concurred on the portions - actually took leftover fries and slaw and some of their cornbread in a doggy bag. We went pretty early and it was rather empty, but I know they don't get a lot of foot traffic on weekdays down there. It was exceptionally clean and the staff was attentive - only one server at the moment, but that easily matched the 3 tables that were there. As long as they have ample staff when busy they're set. Looks like it would be a fun place when it's hoppin'. We didn't drink but saw some great beers on tap and they have their own micro-brewery I'm interested to come back and try... also live jazz on Fridays is appealing. Can't wait to make it down here again - will be worth the trip!

Only talking about the beer at this brewery. This is one of the few breweries in Chicago that aren't over carbonated. Their hoppy red is excellent. The brewmaster is also cool too. The service seems really slow at this place, so I recommend coming here for couple pints.

    (4)
  • Andy P.

Had a flight (ghost town brown, rathmandu, and schnickelfritz) and the gumbo to start out. The gumbo was delicious, as was the tomato bisque which my son had. Beers were all good, went with the ghost town brown for lunch. Great atmosphere with music and sports on tv. Waitress was very attentive and helped us order. I had the pastrami on rye with garlic mashed and cole slaw. My son had the burger and fries. Both were awesome. The pastrami was more corned-beefish, but wonderfully juicy with a great horseradish finish.

Great food....especially their creole items. Child friendly and a knowledgeable staff when it comes to their craft beers and bourbons.

  • Steve F.

Lets start with the good stuff: The beer list is small but solid and the ambiance is nice - large space that isn't too loud and it feels welcoming. I had the 2 combo sandwiches with mac n' cheese and coleslaw. I always get sauce on the side if I know the sauce wasn't integrated into the meat early on, otherwise, they just smother mediocre meat with flavorful sauce. In this case, I am glad I got side sauce, because the meat was pretty mediocre, and the sauce wasn't very good. I am on to something with my theory... The pulled pork held up flavor wise, but it was dry and with only 2 sauces to choose from, there was no respite from the chewing. My table started the running joke of calling the "hot" bbq sauce, the red top, because it was more fitting than in fact calling it "hot." Both sauces were incredibly tangy, thin and lacking body. A good sauce would really alleviate people like me being critical of the meat, but lets be real, you're at a BBQ place, you should be critical of the meat. On to the weirdest part of the whole meal, the mac n' cheese and the coleslaw. I have never had either sides in such a way as Moxee served them. Normally, I order coleslaw to pair with my spicy/savory bbq, but in this case, the sauce was super mild and the coleslaw had jalapenos in it. The coleslaw lacked tang and had cilantro and tomatoes in it - it would have made a good salsa. THE MAC AND CHEESE! What did they serve me? My table called it mac soup, because it tasted like someone put pasta in a cream of mushroom soup with bread crumbs, lots and lots of bread crumbs. So many in fact that much of them were dry even after being "baked" underneath the soup. Each bite was a cheese-less adventure with crouton-esque mouthfuls of clumpy crumbs. I dont know what they were thinking, but it was seriously off mark. All in all, i didnt have any expectations going in and Im glad because i would have been more dissapointed than I am now. To end on a more positive note, our waiter was good and my friend said the crab cakes were (shoulder shrug) alright.

We really wanted to love this place but felt a little let down. Good beer selection but when we went, it seemed like they were still working out some kinks with the service. The food was above average and an improvement for the neighborhood but they could really ramp up the flavor in the creole dishes and then pare down the menu a little. I didn't quite understand the guac and crab cakes with po' boys and etouffee. Our favorite dishes were the chicken and andouille hash and the brussels sprouts. The bbq was on the dry side but the sauces were decent. Again, a great improvement for the neighborhood but not worthy of a special trip.

Had dinner with friends on Friday night. It was average. We shared the guacamole for an app (needed salt and the chips were too thin to serve with a heavy dip). My boyfriend ordered the pulled pork dinner with rice and beans and broccoli for sides. It was pretty bland. The rice and beans were bland and needed salt. The broccoli was cold. I ordered the Chicken Cobb salad. The chicken was good but the dressing had so much garlic in it, I was breathing garlic fumes for the next 24 hours. The beer (got flights) was average. The service was average. The music (live trio) was interesting--didn't expect a clarinet! We probably won't go back but at least we tried it.

The. Cornbread. Tho. My boyfriend and I got out of work at 10 pm and looked for something in our area that was open. I'm so glad we found this place on yelp! He had the pulled brisket sandwich and I had the Moxee burger. Both we're AMAZING. It's a little hidden but go look for it! The food is fresh! If you are in the area and are looking for a place to eat, I would definitely recommend giving this place a try! The staff is super friendly and the jazz playing in the background definitely sets the mood. I think they're going to start brewing their own beer soon. (CORNBREAD IS COMPLIMENTARY)

Food was excellent. BUT, there was a mix up on my food. I ordered pulled brisket and instead got pulled pork. Because I was hungry I ate it anyway and it was delicious. The mashed potatoes were a bit funky but over all it was a great experience. Nico, our server, was awesome. I'd definitely come back and get the pulled brisket. Again.

It's time people are coming in to this place. It's a little hidden away on Maxwell, right off of Halstedt...but I promise you it is worth the trip. This area has been dying for a place like this, and it will only be a matter of time before it is packed. Let's start with the beer. The brew their own beer and usually have 2-3 different selections of their own stuff. It is all very good but if you don't see something of theirs you dont like, there usually have a selection of 10-12 drafts from local breweries. The food is great. I would recommend anything on the menu, and they should have something for everyone. The inside is clean and very modern, and they also have a nice front patio so you can enjoy the weather while it lasts. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Went here on a Tuesday night and loved the atmosphere! It's laid back and welcoming with really cute decor. The food, however, was a bit of a let down. I had the barbecue chicken and macaroni and cheese with red beans and rice. The chicken was great! It was moist, tender, and the barbecue sauce was tasty. The macaroni and cheese had absolutely no flavor. The cheese on top tasted great but the noodles were undercooked in unsalted water and it just didn't produce a nice flavor. The red beans and rice had no flavor either, it was simply spicy. Had a nice consistency though. I also ordered the Texas sheet cake and it was completely dry and tasteless. Very disappointing. I'm gonna give this place another try, simply because I enjoyed the ambiance and may have caught them on a bad night.

Finally tried this place out.. I ordered food for my employees and myself. Everything was great. Huge portions. We tried the chicken po'boys blackened and grilled. Turkey wrap with sweet potatoes. The soup was also delicious. The restaurant is brand new, their decor is really cool. Love the old window display above the bar. My friends told me they have great beer but i can't comment on that since I haven't tried it. Will definitely be back.

Took over 2 hours to get my food delivered to me so it was cold and soggy. I am really upset because I was looking forward to trying this place. I guess I'll give it another go in a few months, when I'm not so upset.

Paid a visit to Moxee on an early Wednesday. We were the first customers here and I must say it was nice to enter into such a well decorated and large space with an abundance of seating. Our server was super friendly and she had our waters out in no time. She even started us off with cornbread and a sample of two current beer brews. I had the shrimp and crawfish poboy sandwich. It was delicious and the right portion. It came with fries, coleslaw, and a pickle. My friend had the ribs and chicken with two sides, mash potato and mac and cheese. The portion was huge. I could see this place getting really busy. I would definitely come back again either with a large group or just a friend. Great ambiance and lots of natural light during the day too. Moxee is a nice addition to the area! Visit now while it's still new :)

I stopped by for lunch today to take a break from Xmas shopping. I've been meaning to come sooner but with Lagunita's opening I kept forgetting. I had one of their brews which was very good. I had a cup of the Gumbo and it was loaded with chicken and sausage. Move on to the pulled pork sandwich and it was a little on the dry side. It wasn't that pull apart moist type. After drenching it in the spicy sauce it was a lot better. I will be back once they start brewing in-house and I'll give the BBQ another try.

I stumbled upon this place while looking for another spot that has since closed. I'm glad I did. Memorial Day...no work...random long lunch? Why yes! There was only one other table of patrons when we walked in. I don't know if the word is really out yet. There is an area to the right that can be closed off for a private party with booths and such and a very large dining are in the middle with the brewery stuff to the left and a bar directly in the back. We chose the bar. They have a HUGE menu. The food is part pub food, part Mexican, and part Cajun. I'd criticize that if it wasn't awesome. They also have daily lunch specials. This is the home of Mad Mouse Brewing so they have two of their beers on tap. I tried both and they were both very solid. They also have Haymarket, which I've never seen anywhere outside Haymarket. They have a ton of other beers on tap and still working on their bottle list as well as some decent wines and cocktails, although I did not try any of these (yet). We started chatting to the two owners, Rob and Gavin, who were both extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They have some other spots both in the city and in Michigan so this is not your standard 'oh I'm not sure what I want to do with my life so let's open a brewery' type of establishment. These guys know their stuff and have been around for a while. As for food, I had to try the shrimp and grits. This is not a typical creamy grit. They freeze the grits and then make them almost like a bread texture and cut them into squares and then sear it so it's a bit crunchy on the outside. But it still has that cheesy grit flavor. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the pork belly that accompanies is outstanding. The whole thing is smothered in this uber tasty sauce. My husband got the special pork tacos. This pork was perfection. It is smoked for something like 15 hours and is unbelievably tender. There are some chipotles in there too and it has a nice spice to it. It comes with some flour tortillas, pico, salsa, and guac to make some tacos yourself, although I can just eat that pork by itself. Also there was some rice on the side, which was also super yummy. I was quite surprised by the quality of food there. There are so many things on the menu I want to try so I will definitely be back. They are going to have live music this Friday so I plan on checking that out as well!

Moxie is a much welcomed addition to University Village. The food was absolutely delicious. I also tried some samples of the beers and they were great. I really liked the blueberry ale. I recommend it. The environment was cool. I know that this restaurant will be a real success. They have take out which is a blessing. Lukas was our server. He was really kind, knowledgable, and local of the area who knew his stuff. Ask for him!

Great place here! Now...I remember this location back when it was Juniors....and yea I am glad to see something new here. First off, FREE 2 hours parking, saweet! Second, in the Summer time they close off Maxwell St. on Saturday's (6-10) and even have events (there was a Luchador wrestling match this past weekend). Third, their drinks and food...it is delicious! It's southern BBQ and it.is .good! This is a great place to bring a group of friends, relax and enjoy some great grub and craft cocktails and beers. The service is on point as well, I went with a group of almost 10 and she even split the check between us (we asked from the beginning to help minimize the confusion with so many orders). We got the tiki burgers, pork belly and corn bread, all very tasty! Definitely give this place a try, I/we will for sure be back.

Yet another one of those times where so had to track down some gumbo. Actually stopped here earlier in the day while waiting for Au Cheval to open for dinner service. I'm a UIC alum, so I like going to all the newer restaurants in the area. This restaurant is huge and had only like 2 people working lunch. Had to wait for a while to get greeted and seated, but was not too big of a deal. We chillaxed at a small table near the bar. I ordered the gumbo and a cider. We also received some cornbread to nosh on while we waited. The cornbread and gumbo were delicious. The cider, brewed locally, was good too, but had the most awful vomity smell. I got past that though and I'm still alive, so no worries. Service was slow, but friendly. I wonder what this place is like at dinner time when it is more crowded. I may come back another time just to find out.

Delicious! Never had a bad experience here. Burgers are excellent. So is the pulled combo plate. Fries are great, the garlic mashed potatoes are on point! Service is always good and employees are friendly. Keep up the good work

The journey continues in finding some solid BBQ in Chicago, as well as naming the best restaurant here on Maxwell near UIC. My coworkers and I came here for lunch one day for some good All-American food. It was here that i realized a lot of restaurants in Chicago love to give out complimentary bites for you to enjoy while waiting for your food. Our server handed out a good piece of corn bread for each of us. While not the best, it was good and definitely quelled my hunger/ I ordered two small plates since I wasn't feeling particularly hungry: a small gumbo and a side of garlic mashed potatoes. Not sure if you've read, but they definitely hook it up when it comes to the spuds. There was so much of it that I got full just from eating all the carby goodness. On the other hand, my gumbo was pretty forgettable. It was too salty for my taste, and not even an extra piece of corn bread could really fight the sodium levels. I heard that the wings here are the real kicker. They may not be on the menu, but the place still sells them. I'd definitely give those a go the next time I visit. Service overall was slow even though we were the only party for a good hour during lunch. Be prepared- they only take a certain number of cards from large groups, so be ready to Venmo a friend if you're looking to split the check more than six ways.

Full bar with TVs to watch games! In addition to the smokehouse section they have, they also serve other food options. They also brew their own beer here!

A little over due, but I must say I have so many great things to say about this place. It is conveniently located by my job so that makes it easy accessible when I am craving some rib tips, pulled pork , burgers you name it they have it. Meat is always cooked to perfection and the sides that come with the orders are also very delicious. This has all been ordered to go , so I cant' speak for the dining experience but the carry out has been smooth. One exception they forgot to add one side and we had to walk back but it wasn't a big deal.

I love this brewery! It's tucked away in the lesser known University Village neighborhood near the University of Illinois at Chicago. I often get red beans and rice to take back to work for a quick lunch, and the staff always offers me complimentary corn bread. The staff is always courteous and the food is delicious! The beer selection is quite good too. They also have an amazing patio space!

Had a good after work evening on Thursday with Maxwell street Serenaders playing early Jazz. Very nice, Prices were reasonable and service was friendly and very fast. Parking was good for a Thursday and proximity to the Loop made it easy to get to. I'll be a reg.

With so many other bbq options in the city it's hard to give this one more than 2 stars. I won't tell you my favorite but my top 4 are in no particular order, county bbq, green street meats, dinosaur bbq and bub city. Enjoy your BBQ! For the record I tried the chicken and ribs and while edible both were less than forgettable. I prefer the rotisserie chicken at whole foods.

A couple weeks back... (I know they're new but there's no running from the "meh" burger) Excellent first impression: I walk in and marvel at the large space. A server pops over and tells me to sit anywhere that I want, so I chose a high top next to the window where the beer's brewed. She hands me a menu and even offers that I could probably get a tour. "Great!" When she returns, I'd remark how clean it all is in there and she replies, "That's because we don't brew here yet." I'm thinking, "huh?" and I'm wondering "So I guess there's no tour." So I say, "Do you know when they're starting up here?" SIDENOTE: I'm not the mistress of "perfectly reasonable questions," but here, I thought I was being sensible. The reply, "I don't know, I'm not the brewmaster." So, who knows? Did she get scolded by someone in back for offering a tour? Anyway, a different server came to take my order. I had the burger with bleu cheese and I can't say that I run into many "icky" burgers, but here it was. The patty was pre-formed meat (like pulled from frozen? I don't know but it had that feel about it) and tasteless. The bun was great, but that's about it. Two stars all the way - especially when this other server runs my card and tells me "it's declined." So, I offer a different card and pop on the phone with my card company to hear, "No, we haven't declined any transactions." When she returned with the card that "did work" I asked her if she realized that they didn't accept the other card. "I don't really know." I really know...two stars.

Excellent service, food and location is exactly how I'd define this place! The quality of the BBQ and food in general is very good here! They have great outdoor seating as well and did I mention this is a brewery??? Can't go wrong! Go here now!

Amazing Shrimp and Crawfish Po'Boy! Highly recommend. Beer selection is good, cocktails are delicious and very reasonably priced. It is a shame that this place has not been discovered yet. Especially, since they have live music -- the night I was there it was jazz of the '20s and it was very good. It has a lot of space and a quite big outdoor area. I will definitely be back!

I order delivery from Moxee's on regular basis. Good stuff, I've had a good portion of their menu and I can say it's got some pretty good BBQ, but personally I've grown partial to their pastrami sandwich, mac and cheese ( it's baked and it's awesome... this is a meal unto its own), and their Michigan blueberry crumble ( reminds me of home ). I also really like their BBQ sauce, which goes great on their pulled pork and chicken. Their brisket is good, though I've had better. I still have yet to sample their beers ( as they do no deliver that ), but look forward to in the near future.

It takes a lot of verve to name your restaurant Moxee. I've always associated "moxie" with a smart, sassy, cute, short-haired brunette with class and a wicked sense of humor. She has a come-back for any flack that's headed her way. My kind of dame. Mad Mouse? I'm not exactly sure where to go with that one--maybe it's short-hand for Andy Kaufman's Mighty Mouse routine, or a wish to see Mickey inebriated? There were five of us who settled in for a 7:30 pm Saturday night reservation. It's nice that they take reservations, though truth be told, any place that's only a quarter filled on a Saturday night should take reservations. I'm not sure why it was so empty, except perhaps being a little expensive for being next to the UIC campus. My companions arrived happy, because there's free parking in the garage across the street. And I was happy, because cornbread was brought immediately, and it was flavorful I wasn't in the mood for beer, more fool me at a brewery, though I did have a sip of my friend's and whatever she was drinking had some sudsy moxie. The other libations did tickle my tongue, starting with the "Paper Plane," a cocktail that had been unfamiliar to me, with a tart, slightly fruity bourbon flavor, and continuing on with an excellent rendition of my standard, the Manhattan. Surprisingly, they were out of the fried green tomato and polish sausage appetizers this early on a Saturday night. But the ones we chose were quite satisfying: the corn-crusted "Cajun popcorn" crawfish and shrimp were cooked perfectly for a crisp crunch and tasty flavor, with just the right of garlic remoulade to add to the flavor and crunch without overpowering them. The tomatoes (really tomato sauce) and goat cheese was also good, though Cafe Iberico shouldn't worry about boarding up its ventanas any time soon. I expected to see the real moxie in the entrees. Since the server said that the smokehouse meats were smoked in house, I decided to go with the combo of pulled pork and pulled brisket. But in just saying the "combo," I soon realized that there are two combos, the other being the chicken and ribs. We mentioned this to the server, and she was all too happy to replace it, but I had also been considering the ribs as well, and the chicken would be a little healthier; so I decided to keep it. Bless her heart, the server came back with two small bowls, one with pulled pork and one with pulled brisket, for me to taste what I was missing. What a creative way to turn a mistake into a win. Unfortunately, the moxie was not to be found. The meats were pretty good. I was glad that I got the chicken, which was moist and flavorful. But the ribs were tough, even to cut between, and both of the pulled meats were a bit dry. There were two barbeque sauces on the table. One was very sweet and a bit bland, the other had just a little kick to it and was tastier. There are plenty of good ribs places in Chicago, whether you prefer handing your money through the bulletproof glass at Lem's for amazing, take-out 'que on white bread, or you prefer the boil & grill tastiness of Twin Anchors. And Smoque and Honky Tonk each have better pulled pork and brisket. My sides were both excellent: mac & cheese (especially the au gratin top) and spinach (lightly sauteed with garlic). My friends liked their vegetarian hash, which was good, because in most BBQ places, they might have been lucky to get a wedge salad. (My vegetarian friend did say that the options were better than at Honky Tonk, which doesn't surprise me. I once went on a date there, and the woman didn't tell me she was vegetarian until after we were seated! Luckily, she enjoyed the "Girlfriend Salad.") Three and a half stars, with an extra quarter each for the pulled pork and brisket samples. All in all, it was good, but I'm still looking far and wide for a little moxie in my life.

Do a Garth Algar like dance for this place only replace Foxy with Moxee. youtube.com/watch?v=Ue0U… Their food from start to finish rips. It rips hard. The menu may make your head spin since there's way more items on it then there are people in the restaurant, but when you come to a conclusion it's gonna be pretty party time/excellent. I had the... Salmon Chowder...boom! Butcher and The Baker small plate...Yahtzee! Pulled pork plate with sweet and spicy cucumbers and horseradish mashed...Hallllllelujah, Hallelujah Halleeeeeelujah! They just opened so the atmosphere was a little slow, but the chap behind the bar was very nice and made some excellent recommendations on food. If you said I wouldn't come back to that I'd answer..."Shyeah, and monkeys might fly out of my butt!"

Came here to watch the Bulls game with a buddy (not a good place for a game, btw... only a few TVs) since it's a few blocks away from where I live. I knew they brewed their own beer, but I didn't have any expectations for the food. It's GREAT. We had brussels sprouts and pork belly, salmon fingers and tiki burgers. Oh, and they give you cornbread to start. I'd recommend any of those items, but the salmon fingers were my favorite. I only tried a couple of their beers, which were good as well. The rest of the beer list is thoughtfully put together, and they have a couple small local options on the list (a cider made by a Chicago couple, a Marz brew, etc). We finished the night by playing darts (a real cork dartboard!). They also have a shuffleboard table. Anyway, a very cool space with great food and good beer--what's not to like?

Came here for lunch this weekend and it was pretty empty. The cornbread was pretty dry and too crumbly. The whole piece pretty much falls apart after one bite. Don't even try spreading the cold butter on it. You'll end up smashing it all over the plate. I had the brisket sandwich. It was okay, nothing special. The hot bbq sauce really isn't hot. We thought maybe they mixed up the bottles. Nope! Now the mac and cheese is quite confusing. It was more like a thick cream of whatever soup with elbow noodles. I'm not even kidding. There wasn't a cheese flavor to it at all! It was quite disappointing. The only cheese in it was what looked like a sprinkling of parm cheese on top. And the slaw had a lot of cilantro in it, which made it taste like salsa.. that was odd, too. Well at least the beer and the service were decent. The food, eh.. not so much.

Oh oh - getting pretty close to outside patio season and their Belgian Ale - Devil Doll will be a good companion for sitting in the sun on the patio. Definitely Belgian but not overly malty. Light and crisp goes down smooooth. For some reason the beers here on tap are always good, a bit colder than beers I drink elsewhere and they have a nice head. I took a bowl of gumbo to go and just ate it for lunch. Excellent gumbo with just the right amount of kick. The smoked chicken adds to the flavor. You will be sure to see me on the patio when they get set up!

Horrible service and the food quality is on the decline. One server and one host who doubles as a bartender on a sunday night after crosstown classic and the air and water show. We will not be back, and this place used to be a favorite.

Fantastic little (not literally - pretty spacious) brewpub that has managed to stay relatively under the radar. First of all, get their beer. I mean, it's a brewpub - try their beer - while there are only two (kolsch and pale ale) you won't be disappointed. The Schnikelfritz (Kolsch) is my preferred, but both are solid. Food is solid - it's not "TO DIE FOR,' but it has a bit of a Southern/Creole/Cajun bent that keeps it interesting and a big step above your standard brewpub fare. Service is friendly and informative, and if you can catch a nice day, the outdoor seating is a fantastic option. Interior is large and can accommodate large groups. Tucked out of the way, I can tend to forget about it as an option, but it's definitely worth a visit.

Went here for lunch and it was not crowded. This is a relatively new place that will be brewing its own beer shortly when it gets its license, but it still has a liquor license and great beers to choose from. Very friendly wait staff, better than average menu and tasty food. The interior is also really nice and spacious. Fine for a date, friends or even a family. Definitely give this place a try!

If this restaurant was in a busier neighborhood, it would be packed with a 2 hour wait every night. We are lucky to have it in University Village! The absolute gem that is Moxee hasn't been discovered yet and it's a shame. Every food item I've tried has been 5 stars (some favorites are salmon fingers, hoppin john, shrimp and crawfish etouffe, Brussels and bacon), and they have a fantastic beer and cocktail list. What sends this place over the top is the service and management. Please give this place a try!

I'm super glad there is a brewpub close to me but I'm kind of sad that I didn't love their beers. The food was ok...the bbq combo was nothing to hollar about but I do love the corn bread they give you at the start of the meal. We also tried the sausage app, it was decent.... I love that they let you buy a round for the kitchen. That's awesome and more restaurants need to offer that up! Will definitely go back to support local brewpubs and try something different. The rest of their beer list is pretty solid so that's good.

There aren't too many places around UIC I enjoy, so when this place opened up a year or ago, I was so excited to try it. There's not really enough good things I can say: huge serving sizes, amazing complimentary cornbread, AMAZING food (with a huge selection), and one of the best beer lists in the Taylor/Little Italy area. I've recommended this place to anyone and drag people here to lunch whenever I can. In nicer weather, the have a pretty large patio area-- perfect for lunch or drinks. The food itself is awesome. I've gotten salads, shrimp and crawfish po-boy, the etouffee, and never once been disappointed. It's one of the very few places that I don't have a "favorite" menu item because everything has been so yummy. As I mentioned, their beer selection is also great, with lots of local beers, including their own in-house brewed beers. Their cocktail menu also looks good, but I don't think I've strayed from the beer. The only real complaint I have is the price...for an area serving college students, it's a tad too expensive to be a go-to place. That being said, for the serving sizes and quality, the price is actually very fair. I also realllllly wish this place was in Wicker Park or Bucktown...I feel like they'd do much better business on another end of town. It's always totally dead inside whenever I've been there.

LOVE Moxee! The food is really great. You could taste the fresh herbs and spices in all the dishes. I had an old fashioned and it was made perfectly. The ribs were to die for and smoked in-house. Also enjoyed the music playing and the bartender singing along to Morrissey.

We arrived just as the rain started on Sunday, May 24th. We were greeted promptly, When we were seated, water and fresh hot cornbread was delivered to the table. The beer menu is excellent and the food menu matches equally. I loved the decor. There is elaborate rustic framework above the bar and assorted mirrors on the walls leading to the bathroom. The dining area is large with lots of wood and metal finishes. One huge windowed wall showed us all of the breweries implements. We had a flight for $10 plus an additional Une Anee pour. If we had more time and lived closer, we would have tried more beer. We ordered the Butcher and Baker appetizer. OMG. Two hot, homemade pretzels with spicy grainy mustard, aged sharp cheddar cheese, homemade pastrami, bourbon cured pork belly and andouille sausage. We shared an entree: combo pulled platter with two sides plus two additional sides. The meat was tender, tasty and just what you would expect from good grilled meats. The sides were exceptional. I suggest you try all of them too. We had the sweet and sour cucumbers, garlic mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and red beans and rice. I should have gotten a BOWL of red beans and rice. Try the spicy BBQ sauce. It was awesome. We are looking forward to our next visit.

It was a great experience. I personally didn't enjoy the cornbread as much because I felt it was kinda of hard, but the lemonade was really good (not cheap but good). My mom and I shared the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries, the crab cake salad, and a side of mac and cheese. The food was all AMAZING! I absolutely loved the sweet potato fries and the crab cakes. I didn't really like the salad underneath the crab cakes so I would probably just get the crab cakes next time but I loved them. The pulled pork was the best I've ever had and the bun was soft and tasted amazing with the pork. The Mac and cheese was just okay in my opinion. It just seems like a "grown-up" Mac and cheese, which is probably fitting for a brewery but it just didn't stand out to me. Everything was amazing, I would probably make the hour trip out there to have another meal like this.

So, I thought we were going on a Chicago brewery tour, but Moxee is not much of a brewery. We arrived and it was very empty - I am thinking this area is an up and coming part of Chi-town, as it was pretty quiet/sketchy on the walk there, but the street Moxee is on is quite cute. The beer list has many more beers from other breweries, but a few that are Mad Mouse. They do not offer a tasting or anything though, so it really is not much like a brewery. I did not even see any casks or brewery type equipment. So, in reality, this is a restaurant that serves beer. The food was good though, and the cornbread to start was a nice touch. I just wish it had been an actual brewery.

I have eaten here twice and the only reason I gave it a second chance was because I visited the first week and they probably were ironing out some minor details. My first visit should've been waaaay better. The place was dead and the service was bad. Mashed potatoes were cold and had to be sent back. BBQ was dry. The worst part was when leaving and picking up after the kids, we noticed ants. Crawling all over the kids' remnants. But, new business to University Village, and happy for a new restaurant. So opted to let the manager know and hope for better next time. Second visit, equally as dead. Again cold mashed potatoes. My father ordered a Mai tai because the server insisted it was a specialty of the bartender. He received a mojito. I literally pulled up a Mai tai recipe and taught the guy a lesson, which was unfortunate. The only thing this place has is good beer, hope they make some changes....fast!

Where did this place come from?! Seriously? It has everything that I love. Do you want seafood? They got it (there's a little crab cake action, some crawfish, a delicious plank salmon, a salmon chowder, etc). Do you want BBQ? They have an amazing selection of BBQ - and the portions could feed a family (or me). You get complimentary cornbread as soon as you sit down and it is delicious. They have a good beer list, and although they have a limited selection of their beer (it's a brewery) they have a lot of good beers that will satisfy anyone. I started off with a double ipa from Haymarket and then I even managed to find a delicious garnache that was being offered. We started off with the crab cakes and they were very good- they tastes fresh and were not overpowered with spices or batter. I ordered the half chicken half ribs and the bf ordered the plank salmon. Both are so good. The BBQ chicken is very moist and tasty and the ribs were just a tad but they were good. Get the Mac and cheese side was goooood. The plank salmon was also very flavorful and cooked to perfection. This place is great and it's nice to see a very good restaurant find it's way to U-village

The interior is very beautiful -- industrial modern, clean, and incredibly spacious. I can't say much about the night life, but it's my new favorite lunch spot in University Village (especially since it's child / baby friendly during the day)! Why only 4 stars? Service is always extremely friendly and very accommodating DURING LUNCH. Dinner service is spotty and our server forgot our dessert. Now for the food! Pulled pork sandwich: 5/5 - Absolutely DELICIOUS! Hands down one of my favorite pulled pork sandwiches in the city. I love how it doesn't come "pre-sauced" and they let you put as much or as little of their house barbecue sauce (regular or spicy) to your liking. The meat is very tender and they're generous with portion size. Crawfish & shrimp po' boy: 4/5 - WHOA, this sandwich is HUMONGOUS! They definitely do not skimp on the crawfish & shrimp on this po' boy, it's pretty much impossible for anyone to pick up the sandwich w/out it breaking. It's very delicious, especially when you add some of their spicy sauce, but the sandwich fell apart due to its size and I had to resort to eating the whole thing w/ utensils. Moxee burger: 5/5 - I asked for a medium rare, and it came out a true medium rare... do you know how RARE that is in Chicago?! (Pun intended). Extremely flavorful, tender, and cooked just how I requested. I can't really say much else other than they more than do justice to this American classic. Sweet potato fries: 5/5 - BEST SWEET POTATO FRIES! I don't care for sweet potato fries ever, I find them soggy and oily and just overall disgusting. But Moxee does them right! They have the right amount of crunch. :) Mac 'n cheese: 5/5 - Damn good mac 'n cheese! It's very cheesy (but I like it that way) and I had to sneak in a few bites because my daughter gobbled it all up before I had a chance. They brew their own beer too. I haven't had any of their beers, but my half German, beer snob husband LOVES their beer. His favorite thus far is their Munich type beer. I want to try their blueberry cider but they're always out of it. Overall, I recommend this place. Great food, great service (during lunch), great ambiance, and an amazing time. :)

A friend of a friend recommended this place. The restaurant seemed a little difficult to get to from the Loop, so our friend drove us there. Parking isn't too great in the area, so be wary of that! The food was delicious. I ordered their special cocktail - I forget the name but it was grapefruit and tequila based. It was only $8, I believe. For my entree, I ordered the Three Sisters, which are butternut squash, corn, and black beans. Of course, there was more to it than that. It came with polenta cakes. The taste of the dish was actually really similar to Yoshi's Cafe (out in Lakeview)'s Japanese pumpkin entree, which I thoroughly enjoyed. You can definitely tell the squash was roasted well. Also, I should mention, the corn bread they give you is amazing! It's super soft and not dry at all, and a little sweet! Our waiter was knowledgable and extremely attentive. He came around to check on us many times and even asked if we wanted a drink refill just right before our glasses were empty.

A great hidden gem - one of the few places in town you can get into on a moment's notice. We saw that this was quieter than most places and wanted to have a good conversation, birthday celebration, and have some good in house beers, and this delivered. I imagine it's often not filled to capacity due to its location, which is one of its most appealing aspects. We started with the brussels and belly, which was tasty and a nice large portion for two. I had the "Schnickelfritz" Fish and Chips, which rivaled fish and chips I've had in the UK. Definitely tasty with the Schnickelfritz brewed right in house. He had the Blackened Chicken & Andoullie Hash, which was good but not great. For dessert, upon mentioning his birthday, we were brought a delicious key lime pie with a yummy crust. They have a fantastic bartender who gave us a birthday shot and made us feel at home. All in all, a great night.

Perfect if you go to UIC and want bar food and beer. Otherwise the food was very average along with the service. For a Saturday, at 730p, there were 4-5 groups of patrons. Extremely slow, not sure they will make it much longer. Not bad but not worth going back ever again.

I've ordered delivery from here twice. The food i've ordered has been extremely good, the delivery service they use on the other hand is why i had to deduct them one star. First, the food....i've ordered the Gulf Shrimp & Crawfish Étouffée, Blue Crab Cakes, Cajun Popcorn Crawfish and the Blackened Tilapia Fish Tacos. The Etouffee is absolutely delicious and would recommend anyone to get this amazing dish. Its packed with so much flavor. The crab cakes were amazing as well, and fulfilling. The Cajun Crawfish was a little disappointing, but think primarily because they were extremely cold by the time the delivery driver brought them. The Blackened Fish Tacos were good, except they forgot to include my soft shells to actually make it a taco. Instead i ate the fish and the rice which were still good. As far as delivery - Both times the delivery has taken more than 1 hour and the drivers act as though they cant use the phone directory so you are required to come downstairs. The issue is that by the time i get to eat my food, i have to warm it up in the microwave, and some things just dont taste good warmed up (ex: fried crawfish). I'm going to avoid delivery next time, and just dine in since the food is really good.
