I give MMs 5 stars for three reasons. 1. It is a neighborhood bar with lots of friendly people. A heated smoking deck in the back is a nice touch and adds to the hospitable atmosphere. 2. Darts. Free. Popcorn. Free. Internet jukebox, craaaaazy expensive. 3. If you bring your own non alcoholic drinks (which I did) they will serve them to you for no charge. The bartenders even refused to accept a tip. I love this bar. If you don't drink, you will too.

This place is one of the nicest and chilliest neighborhood bars around. I went for the first time to watch a Hawks game and the bar has free popcorn with popcorn seasonings. My date asked the bartender to make her something refreshing and the drink he made her is now one of her favorite things to order. After first period the bar put out a huge serving of chicken-pasta. It was free for anyone and super delicious, I got dinner for free and watched the game. I could tell most of the people in the bar were locals and knew the bartender or each other, but it was a welcoming and awesome experience

I really loved this place. I went by on Saturday night to meet up with some friends. The vibe was good. The music was good. They have darts and I love darts! The drinks are inexpensive compared to other places I've hung out at. It's a smaller place but it's pretty comfortable for the most part. I just don't think that the tables right across from the bar are appropriate for the space but other than that I loved it. The bartender Alex was incredibly kind and very east to get along with. I'll definitely be back here!

One of my fave Lakeview dive bars. Friendly staff, dart boards, back patio, Touchtunes and strong drinks.

  • Andrew D.

This place sucks it's expensive and if you want to violate the NO SMOKING LAW in Chicago go to back of the bar where you can light up while be served a alcoholic beverage the owner Paul doesn't care ! The only nice thing about this bar is the very good music on Sunday Nights The musicians are excellent ...too bad the owner is trying to sound like Frank Sinatra ......his voice sounds like Pee Wee Herman ...perhaps some voice lessons ? LOL Go across the street to Friar Tucks or on Diversey at Galway

This place was such a great find. Stumbled in to catch the Hawks game, and got an awesome spot on the patio. Really neat outdoor space. Free popcorn (with seasonings!), and a free pasta meal! Friendly locals and great bartender. Will be back!

  • Paige J.

Came here to grab a few drinks with friends. Cheap beer, outside seating... I'm fond of it. Haven't tried the food yet, but I'm sure it's decent.

  • Lori A.

I have been coming to this bar for years. Since I no longer live in Chicago me and friends plan a trip just to go here. We love Doug the Bartender. If you're looking for a great place to hang out with friends and throw back a few...This is the place! Drinks are reasonably priced and you just might get Doug to sing along to the jukebox. Plenty of food places nearby who deliver. (I'll be there with friends celebrating my birthday this Saturday.) All in all it's a great place to encounter!

As dive bars go, what is not to like? Darts? Yep. Free popcorn? Yep. Oh, and with numerous flavored salts you say? Friendly bartenders? Yep. Good enough beer selection? Yep. Honest liquor pours? Yep? Right across the street from awesome Mexican food? Yep. Better service and crowd than Friar Tucks, waaaaaaaay better crowd than Dram Shop. Only competition in the dive bar catagory in this area are Parrot's and L&L. And Galway Bay if you happen to count that as a dive bar, which I don't by just a little bit.

    (4)
  • Patrick D.

Free popcorn and darts, beer is cold, and they have working tvs. They don't have food but you can bring it in if you want to. I didn't venture to the back outdoor deck but I've heard good things, but not for people who don't enjoy roasting bones in the graveyard (smoking cigarettes).

    (4)
  • John L.

Too much drama by the owner.

    (1)
  • Larissa S.

They are a dart bar. Is that a thing? They have free popcorn. Thanks. Beer selection is average. There were a lot of people there, so may be I am missing something. Its one of those bars that fills up the way between other bars, you know, Irish bars/pubs. Dimply lit, darts, full bar with beer, specials on things you really don't want to order. Its there.

  • Megan D.

I have to give this place 1 star because they allow people to smoke on their patio. When I asked patrons to stop smoking they told me that it was inconsequential. We would've stayed on the patio all night.....but instead we left. We were a part of five interested in hanging out in one place for the whole night.

  • Zachery M.

A good place to grab a drink and watch the game. My friend and I were able to talk with ease as it wasn't too loud which I like and we could see the game as there were plenty of tvs. The downsides are that it isn't very large so getting a table isn't easy and there aren't a lot of places to stand by the bar if you don't get one and the men's bathroom has two urinals but if you stand at one you will get bashed by the door, just seems a bit dangerous to me.

    (4)
  • Richard C.

Dirty and dingy are the two words that best describe this place. No food yet have an outdoor patio in the front, more like a beer garden. Crowd a mix of street people. Irish name but owned by Mexicans.

Great service. Very fun local bar. I came here while visiting friends in Chicago and neither of us had ever been here before. Right when you walk in, you can tell it's a local spot that has its regulars. The bar had a very welcoming feeling with free popcorn and darts! Also had an additional back room with another bar and more seating. There was a little bit of a different crowd in the other room as well. Probably a little younger than the crowd in the front. I've only been here once though so it could have just been that night.

  • Russell K.

Great neighborhood sports bar! Awesome service and an amazing bar to watch all your favorite sports! We don't live in the Lakeview neighborhood but we make sure to go to Murphy's for beers and a good time at least once a week. The plus is the beer garden. The bartenders are on top of their game.

  • Rhonda P.

Call me crazy but I like this place. The crowd is lively and extremely diverse. I'm talking old, young, black, white, gay straight and what ever dichotomy comes to mind. The drinks are reasonably priced and oddly enough there was free chili and popcorn that night. Go figure.

  • Rebecca R.

After being turned away from places in the area that were packed with people and quoting two hour waits, my group of girls and I headed here. They had popcorn in the back and some games to play while you hang out. It was a good spot to have a beer while we waited for our reservation. Nothing to write home about.

  • Kristine N.

Decent dive bar on a Tuesday night. -$2.50 PBR -Free popcorn -No food but the hot dog joint underneath delivers. -Trivia starts at 7:30pm. Host is great, good mix of questions, and fun crowd participating.

  • Alexandria T.

This is a pretty standard no frills bar. While waiting for a table at Dry Hop, a group of friends and I popped in here for drinks. They have all of your standard drinks/beer and free popcorn with a variety of salts at the end of the bar. The crowd seems pretty young here. It wasn't the best; it wasn't the worst. I probably wouldn't go back just because it's not really my style of bar.

    (3)
  • Loncy M.

Stopped for a drink and Doug took care of us! He is so amazing best Mai Thais ever! He was just fun and super attentive. Love this bar! Absolutely would come back specially if you're in the neighborhood

  • Shaina K.

Went here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon! I got a long island and the boyfriend got a beer. My drink was strong. Our total came out to $11. Not too shabby. They had free hot dogs and chill in the back. There is also a free popcorn machine. The bartender was very friendly, and it seems like the place has a lot of regulars. There is also a nice little semi-outdoor beer garden in the back. The interior is covered in different photographs, and other memorabilia. It's definately a nice place, I'll be back.

This is a review for the Tuesday night trivia. Shout out to Dale, our trivia guy- we'll miss you buddy. :( Tuesday trivia at Murphys is very fun. My group of friends and I have been coming for the past eight weeks. Drinks are inexpensive and the bartenders are very nice. I definitely don't have to dress up to feel comfortable at MM. One problem is the seating...you have to arrive at least thirty minutes before trivia begins to even have a shot at finding a table, which is annoying. Shout out to the girls and guys who go to the bathroom to look up answers on your phone- we see you...and you suck! Sincerely, team "In Third Place"

  • B H.

A nice little gem off of broadway. The drinks are reasonably priced considering the neighborhood, service is average (small bar that tends to fill up) but extremely friendly, and they occasionally offer up food options. Also a great place to play some darts.

    (4)
  • Steve M.

An awesome dive with all the right ingredients. - Surly/drunk? bartenders - Surly/(very) drunk patrons - Salty and buttery cardboard popcorn - Plennnnnty of beers to choose from - Badass trivia on Tuesday night - thanks Dale C!! - Darts seem to be the reigning bar game around here - nice - You can bring outside food in. Win.

  • Jim H.

So I have just moved here from Seattle and was looking for a place to play some darts and watch the all star game so enter Monsignor Murphys. Super friendly welcoming bartenders and regulars. Went during the All Star game this year had great conversations about baseball with the regulars, played some darts with very friendly league players. Had a great time definitely going back.

Nice neighborhood dive bar with a quaint hidden beer garden out back. Servers and bartenders are friendly. Great for a couple of beers or a night out on the town.

Murphy's was my destination this weekend to meet up with a friend who said this was his go-to bar when he lived in the area. It's also conveniently located above a hot dog shop that delivers to the bar - automatic win. We arrived around 6:30 and there were several open tables. My friend told me that you have to order your drink at the bar, and I was lucky that he warned me, otherwise I would have been a disgruntled customer who waited for 20 minutes and wondered why no server was coming around. They had maybe 10 beers on tap, some common ones, others I hadn't heard of. I can't tell you exact prices, but two Stellas and a vodka soda ran me $16 - not bad. We also ate the free popcorn like it was our job - nice bonus. I do like smaller neighborhood bars where you don't have to yell to be heard, so Murphy's was great in that regard. We were also huge fans of the background music, randomly. But really, when the hot dogs from downstairs were delivered, I forgot all about the beer I was drinking and really saw no reason to stay. I'd come back for a couple beers with friends, but wouldn't make this my go-to or all-night destination.

  • Steph U.

This place was so fun! The servers were awesome! They were all very friendly and fun. The crowd was also enjoyable. I came on a weekend and it was pretty packed! I actually stumbled upon this place and stopped in here with my boyfriend after we had dinner. We ended up staying for a couple hours and had some interesting drinks (we had the lunchbox...what?? haha). Overall, I really liked this place and would definitely come back.

    (4)
  • Tess M.

This is easily one of the best bars in Lakeview. The bartenders are fast, nice and friendly. The drinks are cheap. The popcorn is free. And they have one of the best beer gardens to boot. My friends and I come here often - this is our little "cheers" bar. There aren't many frills here but it's a great bar to watch a game or break out into random dancing at 2am. Either way, you'll feel right at home if you aren't the pretentious type!

    (5)
  • LA T.

I just love this little gem. The bartenders really make the place.

    (4)
  • Tristan C.

Overall this place is decent. Cheap beer - but still decent beers - and a good darts area. Don't make the mistake of going for trivia though - it's terrible. The guy plays a full song between every individual question - you have to submit answers for each question individually - drags on for about 2 hours and you don't have much more than 10 questions.

    (3)
  • Lyn L.

Great backyard patio. Free popcorn. Bud pints are $2. I think they also serve jello shots. Bartenders are super friendly. Ladies room, totally clean. If you are looking to have a few pops in the afternoon, and not be hassled by the usual Wrigleyville jackasses or people from the suburbs, Murphy's is a great option. Yeah, there are a lot of "regulars" and "solos" hanging onto the bar (some literally), but I wouldn't let that stop anyone from checking this place out.

  • Elise R.

My friends and I come here on occasion for Trivia on Tuesdays. This is definitely the definition of dive bar - but I think that's why I like it. Murphy's isn't trying to be anything more than what it is, and I can appreciate that. The Good: -Tuesday Trivia was just the right amount of difficult, but not so soul crushing that we all didn't have a good time. Solid prizes - gift certificates toward your tab, and sometimes a free round of drinks depending on the trivia round. -Decent drink specials. $2.50 PBR, which isn't my choice of brew, but it's cheap. $5 drafts otherwise. The Meh: -Not a huge selection of beer on tap. Some quality choices like Bell's and Stella, other than that not much to speak of. The Hilarious: -When we arrived we were starving and asked for menus, to which our bartender replied they didn't have a kitchen but the hot dog/hamburger place downstairs delivers. At first I was taken aback, but after eating a delicious burger that was delivered promptly I realized this was actually pretty funny. Kinda flows with the "hole in the wall" theme that Murphy's really epitomizes.

Have to be transparent and let you know that I am a regular patron of Murphys. Though it is not my number one go to joint ...it's in my first string lineup. Paul and his crew are super friendly, you don't wait forever for service, and the prices are decent. too. They have food on weekends or special events...and there are always a great mix of people at Murphys -- so there is always lots of fun to be had here. Not a smoker, but I still enjoy hanging out on the front balcony and/or in the back bar that is semi-open. Meet some great characters in both spots! Great change from the other bars in the area. Give 'em a try if you have walked by before and been hesitant to come on up. j

Good Bar with a mixed bag of clientele I think best describes it? Definitely always busy, good service, average prices from what I saw.. Seemed like a decent amount of women were showing up after like 11PM? Clean and no problems with this place.. don't fall down the stairs!! gtfjd

  • Jennifer N.

This place is pretty freakin sweet. It's a total dive bar, but that's why makes it so fantastical. It can get a little crowded but they play good music, have darts, an indoor smoking area/bar and legit bartenders. Oh and how can I forget FREE popcorn!!

    (4)
  • Chelsey O.

Was here on a Tuesday- trivia night; Dale does a good job. What can I say? Very average bar with less than average beer offerings. Had a 'townie' feel so if you like that sort of vibe, this is the place for you. I won't be going back.

My favorite dive bar in Lakeview. Cool patio. Fun time. Wednesday night piano night is always fun.

  • Carol K.

Gotta love a bar where on a Monday night I am the only woman in the place! Monsignor Murphy's, I will have to bring my gal pals the next time I stop in. Quick and friendly service. The bartender was happy to talk with us, put on whatever game we wanted, and even got us some fresh popcorn to snack on. The funny part was that Murphy's wasn't even on our destination list for the night. We stopped in for a nightcap after a terrific dinner at Chilam Balam which is located just north of Murphy's. And get this . . . .they have my favorite- BAR DARTS! The real ones- where you actually have to keep score! Beer was cheap and icy, bartender was friendly and we won the game that was on the tube. Now what could be better than that?

    (4)
  • James R.

I've been to far more dive-y dive bars, so in terms of dive-y-ness, this is a higher end dive bar. Dive. There's free popcorn with all sorts of flavorings plus a couple dart boards in the back. This is a chill place ideal for drinking with a few friends, but it can get filled up pretty quickly.

    (4)
  • Andrea R.

Friends and I were sent here for drinks while waiting for a table at the oh so popular Chilam Balam. The boys found immediate excitement at the sight of darts, while us ladies were a bit disappointed to see they didn't serve black cherry effen vodka. And they call themselves a Chicago bar? Raspberry stoli and tonic would have to do... Halfway thru my raspberry stoli one of the servers came by to ask if he could have my glass since they were out of glasses at the bar. Say, what? Lucky for them we were soon finished when our table was ready next door. I probably won't be back unless I find myself waiting for another delicious meal at Chilam Balam. Monsieur Murphy may have hit the jackpot with this new popular restaurant opening near them...they may need to invest in some more glasses.

The smooth notes of a saxophone caught my ear as I walked down Broadway and despite my determination to head home, (it was, after all, midnight on a Wednesday) I was lured inside. That was six months ago and I've been itching to go back on a Wednesday ever since. Finally, I got my chance this week! Apparently Murphys hosts a Blues Jam Session every Wednesday evening starting at 9:30pm. No cover, and the musicians were all great. It totally reminded me of being in New Orleans, music-wise. It seemed there was a sign-up sheet and after the original group played, other musicians would switch in. The crowd seemed like there were a lot of regulars, as they probably come to watch the show every week or go to support friends. The place definitely filled up as the night went on and was bustling by midnight (a.k.a., my curfew). Not a huge selection of draft beer (about five) and prices were pretty standard ($3 for Miller Light, $5.50 for Stella). BOTTOM LINE: Like it, love it, want some more of it!

    (5)
  • Paul K.

Very cool place to have a beer and the $5 martinis ae pretty good.

    (3)
  • Chris B.

The bar is confused about what it wants to be. I'm not sure what they are trying to convey. They have played 9 genres of music through 6 different songs. I can't figure out the decor here, are they a sports bar, a hole in the wall, a Irish pub?? I just don't get the theme.

    (2)
  • Yukari T.

There were a lot more guys than gals last night and it's only natural that there'd be some bad apples in the lot. Totally not the bar's fault but I would think twice about going back cause I'd rather not be hassled by d-bags... The free flavored popcorn is a huge draw. You can't get much for free these days! We enjoyed some sour cream and onion, cheddar and bacon, salt and vinegar and plain. A pitcher of Stellar set me back $19, which I think is pretty standard. I imagine this is a really great place to come on a weeknight, solo or with a friend or two. Noticed they were playing some soccer matches on the TVs so it's worth checking out if you fancy watching a bit of footy!

  • Sarah P.

Walking up the steps to get in here, I realized I was walking up to dive bar heaven! I was fortunate to come on a night with a Jazz/40's lounge bar band that was providing some classy vibes to enjoy with my miller light drafts. Standards were all there - jukebox, popcorn, darts (yes!), and tv's all around, but there was just a sort of Joie de Vivre about the atmosphere that immediately made me feel at home here. I told the friendly bartenders that, and while most bartenders I would say that to would think I was crazy - these lovely ladies bought me a shot to celebrate! When I left, the bartender gave me a hug, introduced me to the owner and asked if I was going to come back some time..... ummmm that would be a YES.

  • Alli W.

Relaxed, fun, pretty cheap and not "divey." If you're looking to just go out and have a beer and chill, it's a good spot. People here are usually pretty friendly too.

    (4)
  • Kate M.

This place is unbelievable. Best bartenders. Awesome jukebox. Popcorn (with a white cheddar topping!). I may be a little biased as I am a regular.... but i'm a regular because of how they treated me in the beginning. pop in early evening any day of the week. the crowd is great and friendly, the bar tenders are funny and talkative and the beer garden is never crowded.

    (5)
  • Michael H.

They don't make em like this anymore. It's one of those places where you feel like to can be yourself and relax. Yes, free popcorn and free darts (of very high quality I might add) are a bonus. Sure, there are your surly regulars at the corner of the bar yelling at us whipper snappers, but you can't beat a divey bar with character.

  • Susan F.

Another bar I have lived so close to but hadn't been to til recently. I love this location and the general feel of the bar. I walk past her all the time and during the summer, there are always people on the outside small deck. It is cozy inside, not too big, but I wouldn't consider it a dive bar. There are several age groups that tend to go here, and that is what makes it non-sketchy. Just a great neighborhood bar that is nice and chill. Good specials, and I see that they have trivia on Tuesdays. I'll have to review more, but if you're in the neighborhood, stop by for sure!

Pretty decent dive bar. Great backyard patio when it's warm outside.

  • Laura W.

I have lived down the street from here for 3 years but it took Memorial Day 2010 weekend to get me to stop in. I was pleasantly surprised, the place was packed in the back patio but I enjoyed sitting in the cool AC bar area, and there was plenty of seating. I had never played darts before so we decided to try it and they other patrons were very friendly in helpful in explaining the rules to us. There was also a dog that is the bar's unofficial mascot and she was the sweetest dog I've ever met! I must also mention the free popcorn. Normally I wouldn't review bar popcorn but MM has the best powdered toppings ever! Chive & onion, bacon cheddar, and white cheddar. All three were amazing and we couldn't stop eating it. All in all a pleasant experience and I will definitely be back.

Great neighborhood sports bar with a couple dart boards, a renovated beer garden, and a Live Blues Jam. Score! Pretty typical beer and spirits selection so nothing special to report there; however, the renovated beer garden is definitely worth mentioning. It is large and includes its own bar and flat screen TVs. There's heaters for the Winter so don't worry about freezing your beer belly off. This is definitely a neighborhood bar; you'll see any number of regulars there on any night. You'll probably see the same regular there on multiple nights!! The bartenders are incredibly friendly and make everyone feel at home. The owner is great and lives just upstairs so you'll see him there often. The two steel tip dart boards in the back are popular and will be in use most nights; especially league nights which are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Plenty of good darters there so bring your A game and your own set... we don't like to share our weapons!! I haven't been on the Wednesday night Blues Jam but hear it is pretty awesome. They setup in the front and move some tables back in front of the dart boards for overflow. So don't expect to do much darting on Wednesdays unless you're connected and can clear some space. Murphy's is an awesome hangout and full of colorful, local characters. A great place to unwind after work or to catch a ballgame. Don't expect to see any Yankee's game here... its a BoSox bar that also, of course, plays the Cubs. They'll have the White Sox games on too but you might have to ask. Love you Laurie and Paul!!

Need a book? Take it just bring it back or replace it. Yep you read that right. Monsignor Murphys has a small library of books to choose from in the back. If you want to borrow it go for it and if you want to bring something to replace that's fine to. The drinks are reasonably priced but the place is kind of small. Maybe it clears out a little when you can actually use the back patio, if that's the case then it wouldn't be half bad. My friends and I were parked right in front of the stairs that led to the bathrooms. I had visions of my drunk friend falling head first down those stairs. Which almost happened but someone caught her in time. The owner of the bar was also really nice. He put a bunch of money in the jukebox and looked at my friend and I and said that we could have the rest of the credits! Score! I'm still kind of a fan of Tuck's next door. But I may just stop by Monsignor Murphys again soon...if only to look at the books.

I feel like I've written so many positive reviews lately I'm going to give myself Diabetes. Har. But still, I cannot say a bad thing about Monsignor Murphy's. A friend and I dropped by recently on a whim, on a Saturday night. There was a healthy crowd, a good mix, very lively but not overcrowded, and blissfully not obnoxious. The bartender was very friendly (and super cute) and it was never difficult to get his attention. Yay! Also, bottles of 312 were a nice little $4, and truthfully the coldest bottles of Goose Island I've ever had the good fortune to enjoy. Wheat beers are so sweet when they're ice cold. And there was a juke box. And it was playing fun songs, nothing trendy, no crap rock. Drinkin' music. I was filled with good cheer before I even saw the popcorn machine at the other end of the bar. Free popcorn! And not the gross kind of bar-snack that sits on the bar where every Tom, Dick and Harry, who just had his grubby hands on his Tom, Dick or Harry in the bathroom, can dig in. The kind you serve yourself in a neat little basket. They even had shakers full of popcorn toppings. I love popcorn. Popcorn is awesome. Popcorn and beer are awesome. I think I love this place.

I had never heard of Monsignor Murphy's until my friends brought me there this last weekend and I'm so grateful for the introduction! I'm into genuine places with reasonably priced drinks and a variety of patrons and this is what I found at MM's. Music was great, there were plenty of televisions with a variety of programs if you were interested, the bartender was fabulous (she noticed my need for a refill before even I did) and though small, there were still a good number of seating options. I've deducted a star (I wish I could just deduct a 1/2 a star) because the smell within this place the entire time that we were there, was awful. I thought it was burnt rubber, my friend thought it was Sharpie, whatever it was, it didn't make us sick but it definitely hindered a five star experience. Before I wrap up, I think Monsignor Murphy's deserves special recognition for the fact that they maintain clean and fully stocked restrooms. AND, something that didn't escape my attention was that they actually have a supply of Tampons in the ladies stalls in case of emergencies. How thoughtful is that! It's the little details as far as I'm concerned...

easy like sunday morning... pull down the shades, turn on the games, pour a pitcher or 2 of beer, order some flub a dub chub from next door and let the sun melt into night, let the worries of the past fade into the distance and let monday be another day to heal another war drinking wound you get from drinking all day long. bring your own darts, the real kind with metall tips. bring your friends to share the laughs good people behind the bar forget trying to park. cab it walk it bus it strap on your wheels and roll it

Yay for dive bars in Lakeview! There really aren't enough of them. Cork board darts, cheap beer, and good times. Oh! And a taxidermy moose head, FTW!

  • Jim D.

Dear Murphy's, There's really nothing missing about you, its just that I know a lot of dive bars, and nothing really makes you all that special. Don't be insulted, I just have no basis for making your rating any higher. The place is cramped but not crowded, even on Saturdays, you've got nice bartenders and good prices, and there's a dart board or two in the back which always helps in a dive bar. And all in all it was good time But where's the character. Other than the dangerous staircase to the bathroom which has swallowed many a drunk, and the rumored book collection, nothing really makes you stand apart. I just need a dive bar that has more personality, that's all. Maybe its not you, maybe its me, but I don't think this will work out.

Kinda know I am in the right place when I walk into a bar and hear Jim Morrison telling me where to keep my hands and eyes. Great place to play darts (unlike most bars, the layout allows for you play darts well into the night without the risk of puncturing someones retina. Prices are pretty reasonable. This place also has a jukebox that actually runs on CDs, the music selection is thus pretty righteous and most of the people there seem to know most of the songs that are playing. Popcorn machine for the win. It is a locals bar with a pretty laid back vibe that is always full of fun people. If you move to the area, it should probably become your new HQ.

Monsignor Murphys is a great dive bar. Nothing fancy, cheap drinks, darts, checkers, chess, cards, outdoor area, and not obnoxiously crowded - even on a Saturday night. They have finally, and need I say wisely, done away with their 'food menu'. Instead, you can order hot dogs from the place below and they will deliver them to you (be carefule, they close at midnight!). We made the mistake of waiting until everyone had the greasy food craving, only to discover they had just closed. But the bartenders were quick to offer other food menus from nearby places. There's a funky smell when you walk downstairs to visit the bathrooms, but really, how many bars hand out free feminine products?? I like Monsignor Murphys :)

I went to Monsignor Murphys on my second night in Chicago. There were some dudes playing Dominos at the bar. I asked the bartender for a porter. He said he thought 312 was kinda like a porter. Being new to the city I had no idea what 312 was. Well... it's NOT a porter. Now that its summer, they have a little sidewalk patio. It seems like a good place to stop for your basic Bud/Miller/Coors beers. I can appreicate a cold Bud Light on a hot day, but when I want a porter, ipa, dunkel, etc I won't be coming here.

I live right behind this bar, so whenever I want a cheap beer and fun company I'll head here. They have 2 dartboards, so that's definitely a plus. This is a pretty happening place for sporting events.

I like bars where the owner is available. I like shotgun bars. I like bars where you are encouraged to mingle. I love bars with great juke boxes. Murphy's is all the above. I just like bars.

There is a lot to like about Monsignor Murphys! The recent renovation of the back patio made a pleasant area even more pleasant. The patio has been reconfigured to use the space better. Each table has an ashtray so smokers will be happy. Non-smokers will appreciate that the tables now ring the back of the patio so the smoke will tend to blow away from the bar area. Like the old patio, the new patio is a relatively quiet oasis of calm off of busy Broadway. With a little imagination, its possible to think your on a beach somewhere in Margaritaville! It looks like it will be heated in the cooler months. Another thing that sets this patio apart is that there always seems to be someone working the bar back here even if there is only one patron. The last time I was there, the bartender brought us free drinks because he thought he wasn't being attentive enough. We didn't notice but were happy to accept a free drink regardless. There are several televisions on the patio so smokers can continue to watch the game. I don't smoke but my friends do so everyone was happy. Another great feature of MM's is the front porch. This is a great place to hang and watch the East Lakeview Circus! This is especially true during the non-summer months when other bars pack in their sidewalk tables. The owners have obviously made every effort to make Monsignor Murphys into a homey, comfortable bar. The only thing missing is a small laudromat!

Pretty dumpy bar with no food, a short beer selection and a terrible juke box. Fun none the less with good dart boards, but many easy improvements could be made. Super friendly staff and patrons though.

I stopped in here one night when I was waiting for the boy to get home. I was hoping he'd join me there and we'd have a few drinks. Nope! As soon as he showed up, we left. I didn't want to spend one more cent there. I had a beer, and I was pretty hungry so I thought cheese sticks would be good. So overpriced! And awful cheese sticks. BLECH!

You can bring in your own food from outside, which is great since there's a killer burrito place across the street. This bar is packed with regulars, always encouraging. There are lots of TVs, although they're not all big TVs. You can order from a small assortment of beers, but I'm guessing you didn't come here to sample beers from around the world. If you've come here, you've come to hang out with friends, chat with the regulars, and mingle with the staff. And for that, you've come to the right place. The interior is not spectacular and is pretty tired, but there's a nice area outside in the back and plenty of darts to keep you entertained.

Monsignor Murphy's is a great neighborhood bar. I love their dart area -- darts deserves more love in Chicago bars. We came here on St. Patrick's Day and drank a lot. It was $2 PBRs; how could we not? The bartender, Gautam, rewarded our alcoholism with a free round of shots. All in all, I wish I lived closer -- you can't beat the specials and the atmosphere is very much "corner bar."

Stumbled across this small time bar while visiting Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival. Reminded of something straigt outta Cheers. Nice place, good people and fun times.

I'm on the fence between 3 and 4 here... I'd like to go 4, but the hair in my pint and the quickly disappearing bartender solidifies the 3. The gf and I were looking for a place to sit (outside on a lovely Saturday afternoon) and have a pint or two before we did the dinner thing. We had gone past Monsignor's a few times, and it seemed like a decent little place, and that it is. Nothing fancy, which is fine. It wasn't terribly busy inside, and there were still a couple seats out back. Unfortunately, it was surprisingly hot in the outdoor section. So we grabbed a pint inside, then made use of the couple bar stools out front on the patio. That made for some good Saturday afternoon people watching there on Broadway. Interesting mix, to be sure. At $3 for a pint of (very cold) Miller Lite, it's not the cheapest place around, but not the most expensive by a long shot. Just a good, clean little neighborhood bar. (Minus the hair atop my pint. But I'm a good beer-drinkin man of Irish descent. Didn't stop me from taking it out and drinking.) If I was in the neighborhood, I'd likely go back, although if I wasn't, I don't know if it would be a plan-my-night-around-it place... One last note: they take credit cards, and didn't have a minimum purchase.

This place is just down the street from where I live but I failed to visit for the first 8 months of living in the area. It is kind of hard to find since it is elevated from the street level. The bar has a good atmosphere and good use of space. I can't remember what the prices were like but the selection was better than your normal bar. On Wednesdays (Piano Bar Night) I can hear the piano playing inside when I walk by on my way home and I want to check it out some time.

I may not be as qualified as others to review this bar, as i was a little wasted by the time I got there. Basically we got there on a Friday around 11 or 11:30pm - was happy to get a seat at the bar, had a few (i was drinking Beam & Diet) - the people that were there seemed, well, as wasted as we were (not a bad thing) - but nothing really 'popped' about the bar. In general - if you are looking for a place thats not ass to elbows (was going to say dick to ass, but didn't know if thats appropriate) - to drink up, I would recommend.

Monsignor Murphy's is the classic Chicago dive bar that attracts locals because of their cheap drinks and Cheers-like atmosphere. I paid $4 for cocktails and even less for domestic beers. The darts are free and the staff keeps your glass full. Highly recommended in your in the area.

My absolute favorite neighborhood bar! The crowd is completely random, which makes it so fabulous. The bartenders are super nice and are pretty good about remembering their regulars' favorite drinks. You can bring in your own food from outside, which is fantastic since Flub a Dub Chub's is right next to the bar. Cheap drinks, good jukebox, and outdoor space? 5 stars from me.

This place is awesome...the bartender's are friendly and make you feel very at home. Great, chill atmosphere. Beer Garden in the back FTW. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a relaxed ambiance.

0 stars, that is, unless your night's main goal is to be served by douchebags. True story. So I live close by and was lazy and didn't feel like going far for New Years Eve, so, like an idiot, I came here. The night wasn't too bad until close to closing, as I am talking to two lovely ladies, one of the bartenders/bouncers who works there, but wasn't working there that night, just partying, comes walking behind me as if he and his entourage are going to leave. This guy says to the people that I am with that I am really creepy. Mind you, I've never seen or spoken to this idiot in my whole life until that night. The dude is drunk and tells me "it's time to go" and grabs me by the coat and forces me out the door. It took him and a couple of his friends to finally get me out, but there was absolutely no reason for this- He was merely cockblocking and was jealous of who I was talking to and wanted to ruin my night, which he pretty much did because I never saw those women again. It sucked royally. This guy is a short and chunky white dude who wears a baseball hat a lot of the time. He's a total piece of crap. Never going here again.

I will never go to this place again. The female bartender was the rudest bartender I've ever encountered in my life. First she made a comment that she didn't like it that some in my group of friends were ordering and paying for their drinks separately. Well, we're not there for her convenience. Then she made snarky comments to her friend at the bar about what we ordered. What a snot. Plus the place is really dumpy. (Zero stars)

This bar attracts a RANDOM mixed crowd. You get everything from 708 folks (suburbs), gay/lesbian folks, one or two yuppies, young and old folks, and an overabundance of immature folks. My friend goes to the this bar because it's her local hangout. The outdoor hut in the back is nice for the smokers. I will say this: The folks are very friendly there. I ended up talking to at least 4 people I hadn't known until I walked in that bar.

Monsignor Murphy's is pretty fantastic. It's laid back, comfortable and a little dive-y without being dirty. The crowd is pretty chill and surprisingly open to meeting strangers, and the bartenders are really friendly. Perfect for a couple drinks on a weeknight, as there are good tunes that aren't so loud you can't talk, places to sit, and at a minimum a small crowd. Oh, and once my friend and I managed to make a boy cry here, which somehow makes it all the more stellar in my book.

Honey, we're not in boystown anymore. The longer I live in Lakeview, among the trendy and expensive bars/clubs/restaurant scene, the more appreciative I am of places like Murphys. Not to say that I don't love those bars--but it's nice to be able to chill at a laid back place where you know people aren't critiquing your clothing or haircut. This bar makes you feel at home and offers an intimate space for small-table discussions. The dart area and beer garden at also big pluses. I'll be back.

One of the coolest bars in all of the Lakeview area. The Bar Tenders are great. G, Caitlin, Ziggy are fantastic.

This bar is great... if you're completely lacking in personal flair and character. I was coerced into coming here a few times because it was the nearest bar to my boyfriend's place when he used to live in Lakeview (besides the abhorrent Duffy's). I had no qualms about poopooing this joint. Irish bar? I'm willing to bet there are bars in Madagascar that are more Irish than this place. Unless you're going by the Wrigleyville Irish definition which just involves wearing a lot of tacky green shit, drinking shitty beer and liking the Cubs...then yeah this place is real Irish. They have a back patio which I originally though was cool but you have to listen to some Trixie barmaid flirt (loudly) with all the regulars in order to earn herself some tips. Inside you get to listen to some drunken wretch do a karaoke rendition of "I Got Friends In Low Places". Awesome. I'll give this place one extra start because it was instrumental in convincing my dude that he needed to move to my neighborhood. He'll probably disagree when he reads this.

I liked the small town feeling of this place. It was clean, well kept, and the bathrooms were adorable. I liked their double specials; one beer and one drink. The truly best thing about this bar was the music. NICE NICE NICE. Classic, sing-a-long music that made me want to dance! Thanks!

Gosh, drinking is AWESOME! I have to admit though, that I've had trouble finding exactly the kind of bar in my neighborhood where you could just go in sit down and have some beer with the good people of Chicago. Monsignor Murphy's has restored my faith that this kind of bar does exist in Chicago. I like being able to go in with a buddy, sit down, and grab a couple of High Lifes. I have no criticism for the more trendier places in the neighborhood, but this place is just more "me". I'll definitely be going back. You should come with me! Later we can get burritos, and that's AWESOME too!

We walked here from the Wrig after the Cubs game because all the Wrigleyville places were hell-of packed. Two of the people in our group either know the owner or know the staff here... actually, I didn't fully understand the dynamic between our peepz and their peepz but it didn't really matter because as soon as we walked in we were greeted with hugs and smiles and plied with drinks. The back-patio area doesn't have beers on tap but the bartender lady was overly accommodating and would get us whatever we wanted either from her bar or the other bar in front. They had a hand-written sign at the front bar that said "Free Rigatoni" but nobody could muster the courage to serve themselves, so I took the initiative - it was actually really great. Popcorn is obviously free and I'm embarrassed to say there was more popcorn flying around and on the floor than in our popcorn holes... I suspect we would've been thrown out if we hadn't come with friends. This place is fun - It might just be my new post-Cubs bar from now on.

I'm moving to Old town in a month and I think M. Murphy's is the place I'll miss most. I know i'll be back but it'll no longer be within walking distance. Bartenders (Doug and Alex in particular) are always friendly and usually willing to have a drink or a shot with you. Awesome Decor; Plenty of TV's; barely ever overcrowded (although I think the word has started get out about this place); fantastic redone patio area; this place has been my go to bar for 4 years. If you are in the area this place is can't miss. I suppose it qualifies but calling this place a "Dive bar" does it a bit of a disservice.

I love this! I live in the neighborhood, and this is a great place to relax, watch a game, and drink some beers. The staff there is really friendly and know what they're doing. The regulars here too are usually a pretty good crowd. The only reason I'm taking a star away is they really could use a bigger beer selection. Other than that it's great. If you want some snooty club or high end type bar, keep walking. If your just looking to relax and have a couple of beers, this is a great place to do it.

  • Kate H.

One of my favorite things about this place is that when I was there, there was a huge variety of types of people there. There were some middle aged women, young guys, trixies (but a limited number) and my group which was some folks in their early 20s. The only... and i mean ONLY downside is that there's no place for seating more than about 5 or 6 people... but that can be a good thing too.

  • Christina M.

Just a really sort of low key place to throw back a beer and maybe chill outside on the wooden deck/porch situation. If you're in the area, it seems like a neighborhood place. I wouldn't make a special trip though, that's for darn sure.

really fun. cheap enough drinks, great bartenders, free popcorn with fun powdered (i know weird, but way good) toppings. they have darts, an back patio, and a front patio. and amazingly, really clean bathrooms for a divey-ish bar. while it was bad luck for a friend and i during the playoffs, its definitely fun to go too.

$6 grey goose and cranberry!!!! Hello heaven! The boyfriend and I stopped in last weekend for a few drinks. I walk by it all the time, but it looks kind of scummy from the outside, so I never tried it. We weren't in the mood for the trendy Halsted scene so we hit up Monsignor Murphys. It's a lot nicer on the inside than you think it would be when you walk by. It's long and narrow with plenty of bar seating, some tables, and a dart area in the back (the boy wouldn't play darts with me, he said something about me being a klutz and he was worried about my aim....) There are a few flat screens scattered around. The music is pretty typical bar music. Definitely fun sing-a-long type stuff. The bartenders were really friendly and greeted us with a smile. I'm so excited that I found this low key neighborhood bar.

Great little neighborhood bar. My girlfriend took me here for my birthday and from what I remember, it was great. We pretty much stuck to pitchers of domestic beer so I can't comment on the food. The table sizes are a little small so you have a big group of people it can be tough to keep everyone at the same table.

Like someone else said, this bar is good for a weeknight or a starter bar (or an ending bar ...) it's old-school irish pub in front (free popcorn!), food sucks, fun laid-back atmosphere. after going here a few times i finally discovered the back patio which is really cool. i can't describe it except to say it is cramped but probably one of the more unique patios i've been on. very fun bartenders all around.

A run-of-the-mill watering hole with a friendly twist. This place has a couple pool tables and dart boards in the back, plus some high tops and, of course, the bar. The owner is typically bartending and always is ready to hear a good joke. Tell a funny one and he might just buy your next drink! Food is pretty limited and hands on; they'll bring out your sandwich, and you can dress it the way you'd like at the condiment station. A couple widescreen flat screen TVs are mounted on the wall for those who want to catch the game.

This is another "Cheersy" type of bar. It's a great place where everyone is friendly, and willing to help you out. One year for New Year's, we past by and and decided to stay to celebrate the new year on the lower-key, non-clubby celebration. At the time, it was down the street from my apt, and I absolutely fell in love with this place. The food isn't terrific, but they have great prices on drafts, and the bartenders are super friendly!
