Celebrating my younger sister's birthday, my family and I decided to reserve a cake from Lutz. We have not done so for a while due to the fact that we wanted to try other bakeries in the neighborhood. We came back in hopes that it would still deliver the same quality as they have always done so before. It was a total disappointment. We went there to place in an order for a chocolate cake with mixed fruits (my sister prefering chocolate), but the store clerk replied that the best they could do was chocolate cake with a layer of strawberries of cream which we basically okay'ed. We ordered the $34 cake which was supposed to feed ten people. The clerk repeated "chocolate cake with strawberries and cream" as she wrote the order. That was perfectly fine with us. When we went to get the cake evening of my sister's birthday we arrived to find a whip cream-covered cake with strawberry halves lining the circumference and "Happy Birthday Kathleen" in red lettering. That didn't bother me that much. But what really crossed the line was when my sister cut the cake to reveal that it was a white cake. Not what we ordered. the layer of cream and outer layer was whip cream. We could not return it, it was too late in the night, all we could do was just make do with it. The flavors were lacking - it was very plain nothing special. It almost felt that I was eating cake from a box mix. If I knew it was going to turn out that way, I would have baked a cake instead; it would have had more meaning and probably cost less as well. They get two stars instead of one because I'm still fascinated by the string machine. (I have a weakness for random novelties and shiny things - like a squirrel).

Bakeries are dying fast, and this spot's got lots of history- that's what seems to keep the few we have left like this going. But for me, that's not really enough. I grew up eating old-school butter cream and strawberry birthday cakes. Now I can't stand 'em. My Brother loves this place. I know I should, it's in my blood, but I don't. I suppose it depends on the kind of cake you're after, butter and/or whipped cream just makes me sick in cake quantities. Plus, my Sister got ripped on an Easter Lamb cake here that was not good at all. I've heard it changed owners a few years back and the quality went down too, but since I never really liked the place that much, I can't tell.

Lutz is great place to enjoy an old-fashioned european-style breakfast, lunch or dinner. Up front is a small bakery area where you can buy pastries to-go, in back is a dining room which has an old-timey class in terms of decor and service that you don't often find in restaurants nowadays. I always make sure to leave room for coffee & dessert.

Lutz Bakery is by far the BEST bakery I have ever had the privilege to dine in. My mother actually had the luxury of growing up in the area and had always raved about their Black Forest Cake (it's the best in town). I had my first taste of it today with my family, there were 9 of us in total and let me tell you, mama knows best. This is by far the most wonderful bakery I have ever been too. Their quiche is fantastic as is the variety of pastries. It will truly dazzle your taste buds. I have never been so impressed with the attention to detail and the customer service we had was beyond exceptional. I don't think that anything I write could do Lutz justice. Its honestly heaven on Earth, weather you like chocolate pasties or have more of a berry palette you will truly be blown away. I will continue to be a loyal customer, which says a lot considering it's approximately 40mi away from where I live. TRUST me, it's worth the drive.

lutz's must have new owners. we stopped here this week for coffee and pastry. NEVER have i eaten any pastries as tasteless, horribly dry and just out and out BAD. we had an eclair that was filled with a custard which was disgusting - worse than out of a box. the pastry itself tasted like a box. the whip cream in the eclair and the whip cream served with the coffee was FAKE - non dairy. the kolachky was old, flavorless and filled with bright red dye #2 raspberry jam. this is a travesty. lutz's used to be an authentic gem. i've been going there for over 30 years. our wedding cake was from lutz's. everything they served used to be sublimely delicious and made with superior ingredients. it was authentic german/austrian food and pastries. everything they used to serve reflected quality and craft; the butter cream was to die for, the marzipan was perfect, the coffee cakes and cookies were things of beauty which you'd be hard pressed not to finish in one seating. this new lutz's would do well to fire their talentless bakers, spend some money on better ingredients and hire someone who actually knows how to bake german pastries. additionally, i suggest that the owners change the name. this place bears absolutely no resemblance to what lutz's had been.

i received a cake from here for my birthday, and it is TERRIBLE!!! it tastes like a dry kitchen sponge mixed with cocoa powder. the cake was covered in a tasteless chocolate icing, and the inside was layers of dry as a bone chocolate and vanilla sponge cake with a stingy layer of strawberries. the top of the cake was decorated with these triangular pieces of what one would expect are pieces of dark/white chocolate but instead, it's disgusting marzipan! i took one bite of of the cake and couldn't even bring myself to swallow it because it was so dry! needless to say, this went straight into the trash. $35 for this piece of junk?!?! take your money to sweet mandy b's or rolf's patisserie instead and walk away happy!

The idea of Lutz's has been better than the execution for a long time. Full disclosure: I stopped going to Lutz's for anything but coffee cakes a long time ago, so this is not about recent experiences. But for a few years I went regularly for coffee & pastry and light meals. The coffee's not great and wouldn't be worth the trouble without the whipped cream - which seems to be the only real whipped cream in the joint. I ordered a large (and very expensive) chocolate whipped cream cake for an aunt's 70th birthday a few years back. Needless to say, I felt cheated a few seconds after eating a piece, when the telltale flavor of palm oil hit me - the "whipped cream frosting" was fake, and even the chocolate couldn't disguise it. With Julius Meinl a few blocks away (compare their guglehupf to Lutz's and you'll see what I mean), and Cafe Selmarie a few blocks further, why would I ever go here? Yes, the garden's cute, and the veal stew in a puff pastry is nice, but you can get better food, coffee and pastry elsewhere.

Continental style cakes and pastries. I've always glanced into the cafe but have never eaten there. Looks nice, though. The mini cakes are great You can order a bunch for a party and you and your guests can have fun trying bites of all of them. To me, their strawberry cakes are famous.

nice spot for breakfast, with fresh bread and viennese coffee. in the summer there's a garden patio out back that feels like a tiny piece of europe in chicago.

It seems like everything served for breakfast comes with a side of fresh whipped cream. Yum! Try some of their Viennese coffee and sit out in the lovely garden out back.

i went to lutz this afternoon on my way to the sulzer regional library. walked in and saw a big display counter of pastries, coffee menu posted on the wall, four or five women working behind the counter. so i walked up to order some cookies and an espresso, right? the pudgy, pale girl who took my order was surprised that i wanted to eat in, and told me they had table service, with just a hint of attitude, or maybe resentment. she continued to get me my cookies, though. then when i ordered the coffee she said again that i would order that at my table. ok, but why not just direct me to sit down in the first place, then? and how am i supposed to order my cookies from the table... pointing at them from across the room? i understand they have table service, but you're either a restaurant or a cafe, or both, and they're obviously at least a cafe -- so why not offer cafe-style service? who gets an espresso shot to go? (the shot was really good and smooth, actually. and cheap: $1.65.) after i was seated, and had leisurely eaten my cookies and drunk my espresso, i sat for close to 10 minutes, obviously through, just observing the cafe, while each of the five to six servers walked past my table several times. i asked for the check, got a whispered "yeah" from my original server, waited another minute or two, and paid. $6.31 for two cookies, two chocolate-covered dried apricots and a shot. not bad, and the stuff was pretty good. but someone tell the service to step it up a notch.

They made an amazing natural wedding cake with natural ingredients!!!! I wanted a cake for my wedding without fondant and more of a natural taste! The wedding cake from Lutz was a hit!!! I had so many compliments about the cake being so delicious that everyone wanted to know where we got the cake! We worked with Halida for Our wedding cake. We also had a free cake tasting which is one of the reasons that made us go to this place first for our cake. We also wanted was a unique wedding cake of hazelnut/ vanilla and fresh strawberries. They delivered on all requests!!! Again highly recommend this place for wedding cake. It's also an old fashioned bakery inside and they make lunch and brunch as part of their cafe. Their cafe looks old fashioned and brings it a cozy charm.

I ordered the personal pizza and tomato soup, both were incredibly disappointing. The pizza was baked on what tasted like croissant dough (so buttery!), which got to be a problem after a couple of bites. It was just way too heavy. The best part was the fresh basil, but that was sparse. The tomato soup was weak, watery and had such a thin, single-note flavor. Not what I was expecting at all. Avoid this option--I've had MUCH better from frozen grocery store varieties. The red velvet cake was delicious. The seating was nice, if a but cramped looking due to larger furniture/curtains/wall art. I think they should stick to pastries.

Going off Yelp information, we saw that Lutz had a food menu and hours are up to 7pm. Unfortunately, we arrived on a Sunday at 5pm assuming that we were going to eat food but that wasn't the case. We did not get to eat anything, so the 1 star is based off lack of service and what felt like racial discrimination, since we were the only non-white people waiting to be served, After seating ourselves at a table, we waited more than 10 minutes and no one came to our table. Hungry, tired and waiting for service (and water), I finally got up + asked the one staff attending the table next to us if we can get served food. That's when she told us that hours to eat are from 11-4 but we can ask up front to have pastry or a quiche warmed up. That's when we left!! It would of been nice to have a sign indoors with hours listed to eat OR has some kind of customer service when entering the dining area to eat. a'

Like many posters, I grew up with treats from Lutz Bakery.. while the look hasn't changed, I feel like the service level is hit or miss. Stopped in today to pick up some pastries and decided to try the plum slice, which is a tart with baked plums on it (looks great!).. once I got home, I saw that I was given the absolute tiniest of slices (see photo album). It's about the size of a credit card. I thought it was a joke. The other two pastries were wonderful, as always.. but it pains me to think that someone really cut that small of a piece for sale. Skip the plum slice, get the other stuff!

Love love love this place!!!!! My great grandpa use to take my mom here when she was a little girl and it's still amazing. I'm a chef who has only dabbled in pastry so I'm not a pro in that area but the artistry in their cakes is fantastic. The marzipan cake was out of this world. Their cafe is super cute, they bring out your coffee and tea on little trays and everyone is super nice. I will definitely be back.

We ordered a Black Forest cake this weekend for my dad's birthday because this is his favorite bakery and dessert. We drove over an hour to pick it up, but he was so happy and surprised that it was worth it. We also ordered 6 eclairs and those things are HUGE! The total for the small cake and 6 pastries was about $55 but the quality can't be beat. I did think they could have used some extra help in the shop because there were a lot of people picking up, placing orders and eating and I did wait at least 10 minutes to get helped.

Boy does it pain me to give my favorite childhood cafe three stars. I used to manage cafes and bakeries and even had this place make my wedding cake 7 yrs ago which was outstanding. I've just moved back to Chicago after 6 yrs and I was really looking forward to showing my daughter my fav place as a tot. Everyone behind the bakery ok that's what the 3 stars are for. I realize they have had different owners over the yrs. but they have changed and altered recipes and that has hurt the cafe. I understand ingredients can be expensive but you can't skimp on them. I sat in the cafe waiting for the waitress to wait on me and my nearly 2 yr old. I asked her for a menu for dessert and told her we would like to order. Mind you there are two parts to the cafe. An outdoor and an indoor. She never bothered to greet us or take our order. She told me if you want desserts go order them at the counter take them and pay there. She was beyond rude. Stating she only took full lunch orders. So I walked back up to the counter again( I had just placed my mothers birthday cake order) and I placed my dessert order and my drink order myself. Meanwhile the waitress greeted regulars warmly that arrived afterwards and took their orders. I ordered the Black Forest cake which I've had many times and was also my wedding cake. I was excited to have it again after 6 yrs. I took a first bite and had a terrible crunch and pain in my mouth. There were pits in my cherries. I'm only glad I took a bite before feeding my baby. So I went up to the counter and asked for a different slice of cake. No apology was made and I was told they had to check with their manager before they could switch my slice of cake. After 10 min they finally did. Unbelievable. I had just spent 65 dollars on baked goods at the counter. I really hope the new owners read this review and take the time to train the waitstaff.

Always delicious! Never a disappointment! The chocolate brownie and the strawberry whipped cream cake is the best! The set up is also really cute and quaint. There is also a really nice outdoor patio if the outdoors is your thing!

When you've got a sweet tooth that can only be satisfied only by real sugar, then this is the place to go. As a very rare treat I went to Lutz! They have rows and rows of different kinds of goodies, everything from cake to cookies. I got a few different pieces of cake, and they all were very tasty and fresh! They also serve quiches and other breakfast items. Their patio looks really lovely. I'll be back to actually sit down and try their coffee service.

I love love love this bakery! They never disappoint with their cakes. I grew up eating their cakes and every year I always order their strawberry whipped cream cake. And no one can ever beat this cake!!! However, I am writing this review for the amazing experience my sister and I had when getting my fiancé's 30th birthday cake. Everyone was so kind and I think the owner was there too. They are so hospitable! Even though they didn't have their famous chocolate chip cookies, their kolachkes (raspberry) is divine. Everyone should order the strawberry whipped cream cake!!!

Came back here to pick up cake for our Lunar New Party. It was my boyfriend's idea. I still have yet to tell him how much I didn't like the cake he brought home for me, lol. Fortunately, he's not on Yelp. Anyway, we picked up a classic strawberry, white cake, and whipped cream frosting cake. They did well and it was good. I have to give them more credit because my elders enjoyed it. Older Vietnamese people cannot handle heavy sweets. It was just right. On top of it, the girl, who helped us, was very sweet. She right away asked how many people we were feeding and asked if we needed writing on the cake even though there was already a plastic piece saying, "Happy Valentine's Day."

Everything is changing, and they call it progress. Having lived abroad for many years, I was looking forward to going back to one of my childhood favourites. I was sad to see that there were no marzipan statues on display, no buttercream cakes in the cooler, and no baskets of bread lining all the shelves. Having said that, my slice of marzipan covered gateaux was scrumptious and was better than I remembered. A slice completely encased in a thin layer of marzipan, my mouth is watering as I am writing this. I don't want to seem like a Debbie Downer after banging on about the gateaux, but the coffee was a little disappointing. I requested the strongest brew they carried, and it was lacking. Overall, it isn't the Lutz that it once was, most likely demographics has forced a change to what is on offer. Perhaps if you don't know what it was, you will like what it is.

I ordered a cake from Lutz bakery for a personal event. Their pricing was VERY fair and the cake decorator did a great job using the rolled fondant. I had a few issues that were dealt with properly with the owner of the business which leads me to give them rave reviews. I am not a big fan of cakes, but their cake tasted great and everyone at the party agreed it tasted great. Even after a small incident with the bakery, their response was more than fair and I WILL be ordering from them again. The cake should have been featured on Cake Boss!!!!

I have always had amazing customer service and even better cakes at Lutz! They use top quality ingredients in their wide range of delicious items! Their cakes will make any party complete! Lutz also has a beautiful outdoor area where you can enjoy some coffee, pastries and unwind! Your treats await you at Lutz! As you see below, Lutz made my sisters 30th surprise party cake! I met with an employee and she went above and beyond helping me choose the perfect cake and incorporate my party's theme!

After many moons, my wife & I finally dined at Lutz Café in the sunny garden out back. We enjoyed the Tuna Salad Delight which lived up to its name. The desert selection was a wonderfully overwhelming assortment of artistic pastry offerings. The Mixed Fruit Tart was a great choice. Smiles and delighted laughter abounded at the surrounding tables with the arrival of the various deserts. Café owner, Howard, graciously made the rounds to check in on his diners' satisfaction. Lutz Café is absolutely worthy of your business.

I love lutz, I always order my cakes from here. I used to live 5mins away from this place but recently moved, I'm currently half an hour away but still manage to order from here. Despite the long drive, the cakes are always so moist and fresh with fresh fruit. Their cookie are also amazing! Always try to buy a variety and try something new. Their single slices of cake are a decent size for the price, the cupcakes are a bit of a let down, at times they are dry and flavorless like their red velvet. But the chocolate is always a go to! If you are thinking about ordering a cake, I think a walk-in is better than calling. Just so you have an idea of how the cake will look and you can show the ladies behind the counter how you would like your cake. Never had a sit down experience but I'm sure I will be in there very soon! Overall lutz is a wonderful family establishment that offers quality pastries and friendly service.

I love Lutz, and I have always loved Lutz. I've been getting their Strawberry Torte cakes for my birthdays since I was able to eat solid food. It's not that sweet, but delicious, creamy, spongy, filled with fresh strawberries, and the cream all over is just so lovely. I love it, and I can literally eat all of it in one sitting. You were able to order a slice to go, but they want to lure you in at sitting their newly remodeled cafe, so you can only grab a slice when you dine in. Before, there were actually older Austrian women who were pleasant and knew about each of the cakes and delicious cookies they offer; now, it seems as if the staff consists of high school students who seem quite disinterested. Oh, well! +Strawberry Torte

I've been frequenting Lutz since moving into the neighborhood many years ago. What keep bringing me back? The strawberry whipped cream cake is delicious! Seriously. I dream about this cake, so I sometimes stop in to grab a slice and a coffee to go. This cake has never disappointed me and is consistently light and fluffy and delicious. If I was just reviewing the strawberry whipped cream cake, then this would be a five star review. It is that good. The other desserts I have bought, either for myself or for gatherings of friends, have been a little hit or miss. The kolachkies were wonderful, while some of the cake slices were dry and hard as rocks. Also, some items seemed to be too pricey, and nothing is labeled with the price, so it is very easy to end up the victim of sticker shock when you hear your total for your box of pastries. I haven't tried the cafe side of Lutz, but I plan to give it a try soon, especially now that the weather is nice enough to enjoy their outdoor patio. Until then, I will continue returning for slices of strawberry whipped cream cake. Mmmmm....maybe I should go get one now.

If you want some of the best cakes/cookies in the city but in a setting that can't be beat, the Lutz is for you. This is classic Chicago at its best. When you visit to pick up some sweets for your special event, or a box of cookies as a hostess gift for that next dinner party, you simply must make time to get there early and enjoy a cup of coffee in the store. Served with real whipped cream out of a pewter pot, this Vienna style coffee is as good as it gets. Coffee not your thing? Try the hot chocolate. If that's not for you, then I can't help you. Whatever your pleasure, make Lutz your next stop for sweets and see why this Chicago institution still thrives.

I would give them 5 stars on nostalgia alone. This was the bakery my mom always used for my birthday cakes up until we moved to the 'Burbs. I have fond memories of their strawberry creme cake and birthday parties and based on how fast orders were leaving during my last visits, I'd say those cakes are still pretty popular. My mom still has a penchant for those poppy seed pastry horns so you bet I made it a point to order some for her for Mother's Day. I wish I knew the European name for them, but I know they come in Almonds or Poppy Seed. Years ago, you could just come in and order them right off the pastry shelf, but now they are special order. I'm glad I checked it out first and proctrastinator-me should be happy that 24 hours is all they needed so I could order some of these fine pastries. Between 2 visits, I purchased some of their kolacky--very good cookies that are better than the local Polish deli where I usually buy them. And slices of their strawberry creme cake--still as good as I remember, fresh strawberries and tasty lite whipped cream. Already planning to get my son's birthday cake from here. The Circle of Life Bakery style!

This is a place I really, really wanted to like based on all of the good things I had heard about it. I settled in for a late lunch before Christmas. The small cafe area had quite a few people, which I thought might be a good sign. I ordered the goulash. It was made from quality ingredients but I remember just one note -- Bland. I then when to the case to pick out something for desert. As it is a pastry shop and given all of the people oohing and aahing over the cases, I felt I would be in for a treat. I ordered carrot cake. Again, Bland. There was nothing to recommend. Maybe the team was having an off day. I might try it again in the future.

So, after a long hiatus I wound up at Lutz Café and Pastry Place today. And for that I would like to Thank Groupon because I woke up this morning and checked out to see what Groupon had to offer and lo and behold, did my eyes deceive me or what? Groupon is only asking me for $5.50 for $10.00 worth of delectable treats from Lutz's, well, this was just too good an offer to pass up! So, I waltzed into Lutz's after about 10 minutes of trying to get a really nice picture of the sign outside and I am such a perfectionist and all the pictures I took came out crooked so, I deleted all those suckers and went inside to see what I would spend my Groupon Bucks on. I met Howard, who was /is the owner and he is very cordial and kind, and I'm not just saying that because he gave me a really good sample cookie! I saw so many beautiful cakes, I mean this, they were truly works of art... some almost looked too good to eat.. Not really but it looks good in print! There is a nice little cafe' area where one could sit and have their pastry and some coffee if that is your thing, For the record, coffee is not my thing, but bring on the hot chocolate! Really, Lutz's has some lovely baked items, cookies, breads, cakes, pastries by the slice, and I saw a delicious looking case of chocolates. And, yes, Lutz's may be old schoolish to some but it is about quality here, and everything that I saw looked to be of the very best quality. It has a traditional elegance in our modern world. it is a charming place! So, if you are looking for true quality, or need a cake made for a special occasion Lutz's should be on your to do list.. Classic Old World Elegance, and that will never go out of style...

So, i would rate this higher but my mom had a bad experience when she was coming back to pick up the cake that we preordered. Anyways, we were in town for a few days and my mom REALLY wanted to take me to her favorite bakery/pastry shop when she lived in the city for 20 years. Lutz Cafe and Pastry Shop! In the same place it was when we left Illinois. She said she bought all our birthday cakes here when we were kids so I wanted to experience her hype. We parked on the street and while walking to the shop, you could already smell the aroma of pastries. We came in around 11am and I started looking at all the beautiful pastries. The girls behind the counter were busy with other things, but 2 or 3 of them acknowledged us very politely and said they would help us right away. Took about 5 minutes or so. Finally, one of the girls apologized for the wait and took our order. We wanted to sit down for some coffee and have some pastries, so she said we could take a seat anywhere and she'd bring us coffee. My mom then spoke with another girl regarding bringing a cake back with us to Hawaii. She wasn't sure if the cake could be shipped that far d/t the overnight shipping but she said she would look it up and give my mom the information before we left. We purchased some pastries which were brought to us on some nice plates and the coffee was brought to us in a very "European" style, as my mom says. We had our own tiny coffee pot and cream on the side. It was cute! Never had that before. The pastries we ate were pretty simple and yummy. We shared a croissant with an almond paste inside and a cheese/strawberry danish. The girl who gave us our coffees asked if we wanted some more, and we said no but my mom wanted to follow up on the cake we wanted to order. She asked the other girl about it but she did not have a chance to look up the information yet because she was helping another customer. AND I don't blame her because I was watching her help that customer and he had A LOT of particular needs on what he was ordering, and she was helping him for a while. She said she would just call my mom later that day with the information. We got a call and said they couldn't ship to Hawaii d/t the overnight shipping and the cake would not make it so my mom decided to just preorder a Black forest Cake that we would just take with us on the plane. We made it known to them that we were going to take it as a carry on so they could pack it accordingly and they agreed. Before we left, we also purchased a slice of the Black forest and the Marzipan cake. My mom RAVED about these cakes back in her day. I tried the Marzipan cake later that day and it was delightful! The cake was so light and fluffy and the other flavors in the cake were pink so I'm assuming it was strawberry? It was a good taste, but it was so different that I wasn't sure. The marzipan on the outer cake was gummy/chewy and it was a distinct taste that brought me back to my childhood because I haven't had it since then. YUM! All the girls were very polite and checked us on often. I think the manager also stopped by our table to check up. He was seated with a few other men who appeared to be having a meeting, so I didn't realize he was the manager until he came up to me. So, I don't know if the girls were on the best behavior because the manager was there in the dining area? BECAUSE, when we returned the next day around 5pm to pick up the cake that we preordered, my mom was very disappointed in her experience. I stayed in the car because I assumed it was going to be quick, because we were already behind in our schedule. She went inside and waited again, the girls this time were different than the ones the day before. But again, they were helping other customers. My mom was then helped and said she was going to pick up a cake, and one girl acknowledged that she will take it out of the freezer, and then my mom said she'll go to the restroom and pick it up after. After she got out of the bathroom, she just waited for someone to acknowledge her to give her the cake. My mom said she knew that one of them knew she was standing there waiting but they did not ask what she needed. Finally, she went up to them and asked about the cake, and one of the girls said, "Oh, it's right here." Apparently, it was sitting there the whole time and nobody said anything. No apology. No bag. Just the cake in the box. We wondered if they really were going to do a special packaging considering we were taking it with us on the plane, but it was just the cake in the box. I guess they weren't informed of our request? It took almost 10 minutes for my mom to pick up the cake, so she told me this happened. Anyways, she left with a bad taste in her mouth about her favorite pastry shop when she lived in Chicago. I felt bad because when we planned our Chicago vacay, she said, "We HAVE to go to Lutz." I don't think she will want to come back now. She recently told me she actually prefers Swedish Bakery.

I am a little bit infatuated with their strawberry mousse cake. I just want to order myself several entire strawberry mousse cake ands hibernate in the house until I can peek my head and whale body outside when everything thaws. Somehow, Lutz has managed to avoid my radar since moving down the street over 1.5 years ago. Madness! The strawberry mousse cake is divine, and I ate one of their mini pound cakes in a sitting for breakfast one morning. This place is pretty old school, and keeps making stellar bakery items that they've been doing for years. One of these days (post hibernation), I'll mosey on down here and stay for coffee service or some food. I hope they save me some cake.

Lutz is like a wonderful time capsule that has delicious treats. Once a month, I make the trip to Ravenswood to have coffee and pastries with family at this cute little shop. My eyes always pop out of my eyes when I see the cakes, cookies and candy on display near the register. I also very much like the friendly young people who work here. The employees here seem to really take pride in their work. The sweet treats are just delicious and fresh. On a nice day, I like to sit in their outdoor garden, which is situated behind the store. It's kind of like having your own private area to just unwind and relax. Some of their pastries can be a tad bit expensive, but I think it's worth every penny.

Groupon brought me here since I've been curious about this place. As soon as I walked in, my "old-soul" self Immediately became fond of this pastry shop since it had a vintage, historical, euro-cafe feel which I always like ever since I was a little girl. The lady behind the counter informed me that with a groupon they will take $10 off the entire bill whether you choose to dine in or to take out. We dined in and sat in the patio behind the store. We also ordered coffee to go with our pastries. I ordered the marzipan and hubby ordered the hazelnut log. They were delicious, even though they were on the sweeter and heavier side for my taste pallet. To be honest, there were so MANY choices ranging from traditional German pastries to chocolates! They also customize cakes for special occasions which I might consider doing so for my and my hubby's birthdays. They also do gift sets for chocolates, which my ideal lightbulb came up when I saw it. Those will be nice Christmas gifts!! I don't know why they didn't have prices listed but just to give you some perspectives: two (2) orders of coffee, one (1) marzipan, and one (1) hazelnut log came to $19 before groupon. I guess it wasn't too bad at all.

My mom went here when she was a little girl, and continued to bring me here when I was a little girl. Every time I'm in the city now I stop in and get some cookies, or a croissant, or a piece of cake (or two or three). If I have time I'll sit down and have the coffee service - which is freaking wonderful. I finally decided to review because I had the most delicious thing I've ever had there - the Sacher torte. A hard chocolate shell over chocolate cake with apricot filling. So great! I also got a piece of hazelnut merengue cake and a big rum ball - both were very tasty.

Best Black Forest Cake ever. The first time I had it for my birthday and since then start buying regularly. The cake is not very sweet and that is way is to my liking. I put 4 stars because of the customer services there. They keep failing helping me finding other cake with similar sweetness . Every time they recommend something is loaded with sugar. Good place. I would recommend for going there with friend or order birthday cake .

Growing up, we used to get our cakes from Lutz all the time. It's not the same. The cake slices were dry and I needed a hammer to get into the rum ball. They shouldn't be so difficult to eat. It wasn't bad, but it was bright pink inside, which was a surprise. Go to Swedish Bakery instead. They have a larger selection and are more organized, despite being bigger and frequently crowded. They have free coffee - you have to buy it at Lutz - and a free parking lot. Oh, and exponentially better rum balls!

Lutz has amazing cakes and pastries!! I wanted to make mention in particular of Sam ( an employee there). I wanted to thank her for helping me in ordering my cake for my graduation party which was last Saturday. Everyone was amazed at how beautiful the cake was decorated and how delicious it was as well. Sam has great customer service skills she patiently help me choose decorations and just was simply amazing. My party was a huge success!!! You want great cake ---you go to Lutz!!

Lutz Cafe & Pastry has been around for decades. I gave up sugar and sweets all together several months ago, so I did not have any of their pastries, cookies or cakes. Most people don't think of lunch when it comes to Lutz Cafe. I am sure they think it is only for dessert and other sweet treats or perhaps buying a birthday cake. However, this is a great little spot for lunch. I had quiche Lorraine with a cup of coffee. It was light and fluffy and considerably flavorful. The quiche = 4-stars. The coffee tasted like the coffee I have had in Europe, because it was robust, but not bitter. Excellent. 5-stars for the coffee. My quiche consisted of small bits of bacon, Swiss and cheddar cheese and a little bit of spinach. Their outdoor patio is ethereal, peaceful and beautiful. My friend had the chicken and mushroom crepe with creamy, light hollandaise sauce. She said it was "pretty tasty" and rated her lunch with 4-stars. She also had a cup of tea and a slice of their strawberry whipped cream cake. She was trying to get me to taste it, because she said it is a 5-star dessert. I took her word for it, because I no longer eat sweets or anything containing sugar (by my own choice). Service was not over the top attentive, however, it was hospitable and adequate. Our server was charming, engaging and polite. We agreed on 4-stars for service. My parents ordered so many birthday cakes from Lutz in the mid 1970's to the mid 1980's. We couldn't get enough of their birthday cakes. European perfection at its best. Really. I had not been here in over 10 years so we wanted to try something different for lunch. We're glad we ate here. The cups used for coffee and tea are resplendent and reminded me of the small coffee shops I used to visit when I lived in Europe. When you walk in the door you are slapped in the face with the wonderful fragrance of vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, strawberries and a cornucopia of delectable and enticing sweet treats. There are a myriad of beautiful cakes, tasty tarts and tortes and amazing cookies. Their gourmet chocolates are created with traditional European recipes, used for centuries, by the Lutz family. They also stay very true to its Konditorei distinction using the best quality ingredients and creating unique flavors that are delicate, yet light. I plan to return here again before the colder weather hits Chicago. Street parking was not difficult to find. We had an enjoyable afternoon on their patio. We left gratified, satisfied and completely relaxed.

Take your grandparents here! They will love it! Cute restaurant inside a bakery shop with lots of doilies. They used to have German food in the Cafe but I think now it is only cake and coffee, which is probably for the best because the food was not spectacular. I also agree with the other yelpers that it would be helpful if the bakery put the price per lbs or per cookie/cake next to the item. (Whole Foods does it.) So there are no surprises and that we are not scared to come back and spend more money.

Oh my goodness!!! This food is great and the quiche is some of the best I've ever tasted. The desserts are also awesome and you need to come HUNGRY!! =). Very nice meeting Howard, the owner. Overall great experience~thanks!!

The car came to a screeching halt when we passed by Lutz's. I said to Huz, 'what do you mean you've never had Lutz's!' I can't believe all the years we have been together he never had a morsel or this family favorite cake. Well that was all going to change as I jumped out the car to grab two slices of the infamous strawberry torte. Housed between layers of fluffy yellow cake, fresh strawberry pieces and fluffy decadent whipped cream, I knew he would be sold on this. After dinner, I placed the generous portions on two dessert plates and sat it in front of him while we watched tv. Looking over 5 minutes later for a reaction, I could clearly see a cleaned plate in front of him. Sold, indeed.

I remember coming to Lutz's Bakery in the 70's. It was amazing. Never wanted a traditional birthday cake because it could never come close to the beautiful European pastries offered at Lutz. The store and restaurant were packed with customers. Today's visit was thoroughly disappointing. The place was empty...and perhaps that should've been our first clue. I understand that it has come under new ownership, but figured "how bad could it be,right?" Please understand that I am only referring to their pastries when I say that they didn't even come close to what I had years ago. The rum ball was 2x the size of what I remember, but dyed pink inside and tasteless. My moms hazelnut torte was almost devoid of hazelnuts and made with some heavy cake, rather than the light and airy, delicate cake of the past. The coffee was fine, the whipped cream on the side had the flavor of something between cold butter and cool whip. The decor was charming, but the quality of the product was unimpressive. There are many other, better choices in Chicago.

Oh, Lutz Cafe...I truly love this place! Their pastries are delicious, and the staff is super friendly and helpful! I think their truffles are the best deal, personally. They are SO good, and right around $1 a piece, which is not much for good quality chocolate. Try the dark chocolate sea salt caramel chocolates! ......also their danish, rum balls, brownies, etc. etc! Oh, and they also have my favorite coffee in the city!

I am surprised that I never wrote a review about Lutz - a little foretaste of Heaven, however, today reminded me that it is indeed, not Heaven. While the food is great, the desserts are unbelievable, and the coffee with real whipped cream are all scrumptious, I was taken by surprise by the cost, (I was there just this past summer and it wasn't that much). I would have asked for a doggy bag for the small amount of crust from the quiche I left behind and the last bite of dessert I left on my plate. My bill was $18.49. I have been known to treat my friends to a treat, but not today. There were four of us and that would have put the total bill at nearly 80.00. I would have fainted, (so would my husband). What happened? Everything was great, but .... My friends can enjoy a taste of Heaven, enjoying each others company sitting at the Garfield Park Conservatory and save on the calories.

I bought two groupons for this place, the 3 mini cheesecakes one, and the $10 one and used them on the same day, having ordered my cheesecakes by phone the day before. The lady behind the counter was nice and grabbed my cheesecakes right away, which were packaged nicely. I also bought a pound of their specialty cookies packed in a nice gold box as a hostess gift for a friend, and a couple of croissants for me. These two extras cost me over $20, which was a little surprising because the box window displayed about 20 small cookies, so I guess they were heavy? I tried the croissants when I got home and they weren't morning fresh, which was understandable considering it was 3 pm, but i was still hoping for a little crunch in the crust. Still good though- I love a squishy croissant too. The cheesecakes I tried the day after and they were just ok. The assortment includes plain with a strawberry on top, apple cinnamon, and chocolate chip with a chocolate-covered strawberry on top. I liked the plain one the best as I'm not a huge fan of chocolate and the apple cinnamon one was thick and dry. I have had and made better cheesecakes though, so even with the great groupon deals, I don't think I'd make the journey back here. My friend liked the cookies (I didn't get to try one) and they looked pretty, so I think that could be worth coming back for, but I did find them to be a bit on the expensive side.

I picked up a chocolate chip cheesecake from Lutz's for my dad's 59th birthday dinner. The Lutz's staff wrote a message on the cake and boxed it for me to bring to the event. They were quick, efficient and polite. The cheesecake was outstanding and enjoyed by everyone at the dinner. I look forward to my next experience at Lutz Cafe.

What can I say, "Their WATER is good!" Everything about Lutz Cafe is excellent. Their Strawberry Whipped Cream cake is to die for. If you're in Chicago, rent a car or take public transportation. But go there! You will love it. PS, we shared a Lutz Club Sanwich (they are big) to savè room for their strawberry whipped cream cake and their New york style Cheesecake.

I used a groupon for this pastry shop and ordered a slice of the strawberry marzipan and an eclair. I rarely leave any pastry unfinished but these were definitely not worth the calories. The eclair was flavorless and the cake tasted of pure sugar and had an unappetizing texture to it. Two bites (had to confirm that the first was nasty) and tossed. Perhaps the other treats are better but definitely don't order what I did. The customer service however is quite impressive and if I am ever in the area I would attempt another visit. I've heard the cheese cake, fruit tarts, chocolate ganache cake or the strawberry whip cream cake is worth a try.

Just had a wonderful lunch, met the owner, had some pastries, only constructive criticism....quiche crust was under cooked, didn't stop me from eating it :) a nice little cafe for lunch, can't wait to eat out back next year :) the cafe reminds me of Germany, just a quaint little cafe, with very friendly servers. Oh and t h e turkey special sandwich was tasty!

I got my friends baby shower cake here and it was pricey, but worth every penny. The girls were helpful and friendly. The store itself takes me back to my childhood with the beautiful displays of cookies and cakes. It's a shame that ppl are buying their pastries and cakes at grocery stores,as they are loaded with preservatives and cheap fillers. My only regret is not knowing about this place sooner.

I don't like this place. I will never go back. That said, I just don't think it's my thing. I know many people (mostly older Polish people) who love this place. It's a different type of bakery. I see a review as I'm typing this that says "Take your grandparents here! They will love it!" and I think that's probably a pretty accurate assessment. If you have to go here, just know that most everything is extremely dry (it's supposed to be, I think). Go for the fruit tart!

I'd really want to give Lutz an extra half star here, especially for nostalgia sake. This was of course the go-to bakery for my Austrian/German family throughout my adolesence. My mom and grandma still talk about it 20 years later. This is my second visit in two years. The first experience was rather disappointing. This time, so much better. Both different than I remember it. The most recent visit, I purchased 5 of the $5 cake slices. They are a fair portion for the price. Here was my order of preference: #1 Black Forest #2 Sachre Torte #3 Marzipan #4 Strawberry Mousse #5 Chocolate Mousse I'd come back and I would be very interested in trying the coffee service. In the meantime, I would say that the owner was very friendly and personable. The cookie I sampled did bring me right back to childhood and that's gotta count for something! Additionally, I have been on a bakery kick and tried just about all the major cupcake venues as well as purchasing a couple of birthday cakes from my very bakery heavy neighborhood and Lutzs surpasses just about all of them.

It's a very nice Cafe with a very old school feel-like 50's or 60's decor inside that hasn't been updated. There was outdoor seating as well. I probably should have gotten some of their pastries, but after a long holiday weekend of indulging I decided to get a sandwich. The sandwich wasn't anything special for the price ($9.99). It was something my grandma would have made- so it kind of tasted like the 1950's-which is the only way I could describe it-pretty standard and nothing too dangerous. I know they are more known for their cakes so I will give this bakery another chance because those looked delicious.

Many pastry options, almost all of it looks delicious. I got the apple strudel for work and everyone loved it. It had a great taste without being overtly too sweet. The Kolachkies were also well received. That being said, Lutz wouldn't be my go to bakery since its a little outside of my neighborhood. But luckily, I have Julius Meinl to quell my pastry needs :-)

YUM! This is a great place for brunch! It must be a hidden gem since there was hardly anyone dining in on a Sunday morning. There was a constant stream of customers purchasing items from the bakery. Everything on display looked so good. The waitress was friendly and sweet. The coffee here is fabulous. The VIENNA COFFEE SERVICE for $3.75 was a nice treat. It is served on a silver platter in an individual European pot of coffee (about 1.5 cup worth) with whipped cream on the side. I asked for 1 refill and was not charged extra for the additional pot. The Ham & Cheddar Cheese Quiche was delicious, light and fluffy. I tried the Nepolean pastry and thought it went really well with the coffee. It was crispy and sweet. There is a beautiful garden that is opened during the summer. I can't wait to come back when the weather is warmer! LOCATION: Across the street from Aldi with easy street parking.

Starting with the Viennese coffee served with the thickest whipped cream we'd ever seen, we enjoyed the hidden garden with its pool and flowerbeds, the sunshine keeping us warm on a fall Sunday. We marveled that there weren't many people there, as this is surely one of the nicest restaurant patios in town. Our first course was the tomato bisque, which is delightfully enhanced with an orange slice, silky smooth and full-flavored. Our entrees, the chicken and mushroom crepe with hollandaise sauce, quiche Lorraine, and the ham and cheese sandwich, were beautifully presented, well-prepared, and very rich. Had we known how rich, we might have saved some to take home and left room for the incredible dessert options. We will be going back for more of that wonderful coffee, friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, and some pastries. October 10: Another lovely lunch on the patio. I ordered the beef goulash, which was very good, not too much paprika and very tender beef. My friend ordered the turkey sandwich, which had a lot of turkey, and a surprise: cranberry mixed with the mayonnaise. We left room for dessert, a slice of Dobosh torte. The delicate cake was overwhelmed by the thick layers of butter cream, and the caramel topping was hard, like toffee. We had to use a knife to cut through it. I would definitely return, but will avoid the butter cream in favor of one of their many other gorgeous pastries.

Lutz bakery continues to be one of our favorites. I recently ordered a birthday cake for my dad's 60th birthday. We got the fresh strawberry whipped cream cake and it was beautiful. The cake was incredibly light and delicate. Everyone raved about it. However, my husband picked up little pastries which were pretty dry. That's why I had to take off one star. I'd would definitely try it again.

Me and my mom went here in a whim after church. We decided to sit down and eat. The food was pretty good. I got a turkey sandwich and my mom had the quiche. I was happy with what I ordered. The tomato soup that they served us first was not good, though the bread served with it was. It tasted like it was right out of a Campbell's can. Plus they added whipped cream on top which I couldn't understand at all. Made it taste even worse. We also had some coffee with our meal which was served in a cute fashion. My thing was the bill. I think for the amount we paid it wasn't exactly worth it. Maybe it is if you're ballin like that. We got some chocolate cake to take home. It was really good. I think perhaps this place is best for getting desserts not for a meal, although the ambiance is quite nice.

I have been going to Lutz for at least five years, and the sweets have always been delicious. Today was my first time dining in and the experience was horrendous. I came in with my husband, sister and brother in law and we proceeded to seat ourselves in the dining area. The place was fairly empty, maybe one or two people ordering out. We had ordered a few pastries and coffee, nothing dramatic. A few minutes after seating ourselves, an older woman brought us two trays of coffee (we had ordered only one) and left them on the table without saying a word. She left and came back with three plates and three sets of silverware, even though there were clearly four people at the table. Next, she brought us our sweets, boxed up and left them on the table. She proceeded to say that she would have taken our pastries out of the box and placed them on trays, but she didn't because she thought we were leaving. Finally, she brought us our water complete with a large, black bug in one of them. I went up to the counter to ask for a new glass and she completely ignored me even though there was no one else there to be served. When I finally did get a chance to speak to her I let her know that there was a bug in my water and she rolled her eyes, didn't utter a word, and grabbed the cup and left only to return with a new glass and an even stronger attitude. At no point did she apologize for the water incident, the fact that we were eating out of a box on our table, or the fact that she brought us either too much or too little of what we ordered. I don't know if this woman is a co-owner or what, but her attitude and rude disposition is the only reason I won't make any more purchases there. It's really sad, but considering all of what I saw today, there are many more bakeries in the area that would gladly take my money without the attitude.

Tried the creamy red velvet cake and chocolate cake. Service was slow but attentive and the presentation was excellent. At $5.00 per piece, I divided my red velvet cake into thirds and made it last over two days and it was sooo yummy. I noticed that they have an outdoor garden eating area, perfect for dessert and coffee. Don't worry, this place isn't pretentious, just come as you are with your sweet tooth and be ready to be satisfied.

Went here again for my sisters wedding shower brunch and the pastries were better. It is a quiet, clean, friendly, place in the area to enjoy coffee and conversations. Food was okay, we did like the individual quiche style instead of a slice. Wished their tomato bisque tasted like a bisque and not just tomato soap however. I really want to love this place, maybe third times a charm?

On one of our neighborhood walks, we stumbled across this Austrian bakery/cafe. From the outside, it looked like a place that only specialized in wedding cakes, but once we walked in, the pastry case stole the show filled with cupcakes, cake slices, fruit tarts and then an entire case of cookies and one filled with chocolates. I cannot resist a red velvet cupcake so I opted for that - it was good, but not great. It was a little stale and the frosting lacked in flavor; by no means competition for cupcake purveyors Sprinkles or Crumbles (and was as expensive!). I also had them put together a box of assorted cookies to take to a birthday party & those were also OK - they were fresh and tasty, but nothing too memorable. We were a bit bummed we got there almost when they were closing, so we had to take our sweets to go & skipped out on the coffee (we were the only ones there and felt like we were being rushed (the girl said they were getting ready for an event)). The seating area is really cute & elegant - very European & something you wouldn't expect at a bakery (think table cloths, candles, cloth napkins, etc.). We also peeked into the back and they had a great little patio with small tables and even a little pond. Overall, we are really glad to have stumbled upon this place in the neighborhood. We look forward to coming back here and sipping some Viennese coffee and tasting some chocolates out on the patio. However, I'd probably pass on getting any cupcakes or cookies though - you'd have better luck at other neighborhood bakeries.

Nice pastry shop with a variety of desserts. We got the Chocolate croissant which was delicious and a raspberry and strawberry pastry which were both tasty. Only complaint is they have no prices on anything and you have to keep asking and just suffer in silence. We got one apple turnover which was big but cost $15! The price should be listed next to each item so people don't have to keep asking or feel uncomfortable to ask. The lady behind the counter wasn't too friendly either, had a black expression with absolutely no emotion. She really did not seem like she wanted to be there. Skip the coffee, it tastes watered-down.

What an adorable little throwback in time! I am sitting here right now enjoying a delicious cappuccino that was only $2.75. The shop offers free wifi and it is super quiet. Each table has a vase of fresh flowers which is needed after this horrid winter. The staff was very friendly and I enjoyed having a real tablecloth and comfy chairs. There is classical music playing and it is nice to hear while I write my research paper. I think it makes me feel more intelligent. ;) I can't believe it has taken me this long to stop in as I only live about 5 minutes from here. The added bonus is that I can use this Groupon to take my pastries home and devour them in front of my television.

September 2006. Ordered a wedding cake, made a slight change 10 days before. The changes were estimated at a maximum of $75. I told him, "well, you have my credit card info, just charge me for the balance so I don't have to stop in again". They charge me over twice as much as quoted. . Ridiculous. I thought their cafe area was nice, and I may have stopped in again and again, but no- I don't think I'll ever go back now. The cake wasn't spectacular either.

Being a bit of a traditionalist, I really wanted to give Lutz's five stars. The place is an institution. But alas, as a pastry lover, I cannot. My wife went there recently for a function. She reported that the place "is quaint and cute, like stepping back in time." She also brought home an apple strudel and a bunch of cookie for me! Gotta tell ya, when I saw the strudel, I was stoked. It was beautiful - a rolled-up fruit-filled work of baking art. What's not to like, right?? Well frankly, it was really bland. You figure when you pay $15.00 for a hunk of pastry, this thing better be jumping off the plate. Not so. Same with the cookies. Looked pretty, but dry and bland. As they say, good from far, but far from good. This kind of bakery might have been great 50 years ago, and it still works for some people. Lutz's has survived for a long time. But it isn't my thing. For me, not about how cute it is or if my great-grandparents went there. It's about taste.

We came here with a Groupon and I thought the service was very nice which is always really important to me. We got two cookies (I forget the exact name, but they had different jams stuffed in the middle with a flaky crust @ 15.99/lb) we got a hazelnut cake, and some croissants. It was roughly 10am and it was a pretty quiet morning, but everyone who did come in there appeared to be regulars or they were people with large orders so that's always a good sign. Overall, the pastries were okay they didn't taste like anything different or overwhelmingly better than anything else I had before. The Croissant was good, but it didn't taste overly amazing, but it was very buttery. I liked the hazelnut cake the best as I thought it was pretty interesting and had not seen anything like it before. The creme they used was to die for and I would return just to try other cakes.

I came here for the first time with a friend and oh my was my sweet tooth satisfied! I loved the marzipan cake with raspberry filling which went perfectly with my latte. Besides the deliciousness, it was a great atmosphere to hang out with a friend. We also got to meet the owner who was very warm and welcoming! I am definitely looking forward to coming back! Although sadly have to keep it at a minimum so that I can fit through the door. I can't wait till the spring so that I can enjoy a latte and some cake on the patio in the back.

I hadn't been to lunch here since 1993, so I thought it was time to come back. I took a senior friend on a weekday. There is the choice of the "tea room" indoors or the outdoor patio. Because the flimsy plastic furniture on the patio, would not work for my friend, we opted to eat indoors. The cafe menu is brief, European and kind of retro. For instance, it has that "Chef's Salad" which in my youth was supposed to be diet food, with it's massive chunks of meat and cheese and a creamy dressing. Whose diet food, I'm not sure. There's the standard Caesar with or without chicken, fresh soups, crepes, goulash, and a nice selection of sandwiches, available on their bakery bread. I remember having soup and sandwich back in "93. This time we both ordered the chicken and mushroom crepes. I had a fresh tomato soup which was very flavorful, Kind of sweet and spicy with something like cinnamon. Wilda's salad was ever so standard dinner salad, with a mix of iceberg and romaine lettuces. The crepes were like big mushy, tasty mouthfuls of cream of mushroom soup with large chunks of chicken and mushrooms. A little hollandaise on the side to make them even richer, and a garnish of those little canned mandarin oranges for more retro appeal. But I love stuff like this. I had a roommate from Indiana once whose mom used to make the best mushy entrees and desserts. Terre Haute Cuisine, I called it. The service here is not particulary attentive, but European in the sense that they leave you alone, nothing is rushed, but they skip skip the American obsequiousness, which is OK. Wish they would have shown a little more sensitivity to a special needs person, (not to mention the lady with the walker.) It's great to be able to pick and choose cookies from the bakery case on your way out, as if it were an old neighborhood candy store. Both the bakery items and the cafe items are a good value. And great if you're looking for that old time elegance.

We ordered our wedding cake from here and it was fine. Neither me or my husband had much time at the wedding, so we didn't eat any of it at the reception, but several of my guests said they liked it a lot. So good for that. But, weirdly, we ordered a completely white cake, and our cake came with some purple piping on it. Have no idea why. It wasn't awful or anything, but our wedding colors were orange and teal, so the cake didn't match anything and clashed with our orange and teal cake topper. I mean, that's weird right? But on the day of I couldn't be bothered to deal with it. The cake looks odd in the pictures though. Basically, if I order and all white cake that's what I should get! They also delivered it without a box so we couldn't figure out how to take home the left over cake. Maybe that's normal? but our caterer was flummoxed too. We ended up having to leave the extra cake at our venue. I'm just a little mad we paid so much money for a cake that clashed with our colors and then we couldn't take home. I probably would have gotten to eat some if we could have take it with us.

I'm with some of the other reviewers who grew up going here, as did I. I want it to be so much better. I've now had two exceptionally grumpy experiences here due to lippy/can't-be-bothered service. First time, I wanted to order a large amount of butter cookies in a certain way they USED to make them (white frosting, not white chocolate, sandwiched cookies with multicolored sprinkles on one end -- if you know of somewhere that serves those, please tell me). It was like beyond hard to explain to the person what I wanted, so I gave up. Then I decided on a whim a few weeks ago to get butter cookies again. First of all, barely any selection. But the woman was sooooo rude I felt like I was majorly annoying her by just wanting to buy something. Lutz get some new staff, get some reinvigorated marketing/products, and stage a comeback. Otherwise I predict you will be a goner quite soon.

I've known of Lutz since I was a kid, but I never knew about their outdoor garden until a few years ago. It's peaceful and cozy, and the service was quite nice. The desserts are why you go...and Lutz doesn't disappoint. I've been to the famous Demel Cafe in Vienna, and I'll say Lutz is the closest thing you'll find along those lines in Chicago. Check it out for coffee and sweets, or even to get something to go for the family.

It took an offer from Groupon to get me, a lifetime member of Weight Watchers, back to the Lutz bakery. I had the bright idea that I would use the two groupons I bought to buy treats to share with my students. I did do that, but not without first making sure that the various cookies were safe to eat. Oh boy oh boy . . . those cookies were good enough to make me abandon Weight Watchers and dive into a bucket of buttery cookie goodness. And the few cookies that I did not eat were greatly appreciated by starving (you would think they were starving) massage therapists. I think I understand, now, why some businesses go the Groupon route. At least three or four of my cookie consumers said, "Oh my God, Lutz! I haven't been there since I was a kid!" Well, Groupon helped them remember Lutz, and reminded them why they had liked Lutz so much. I would definitely go to Lutz again, and eagerly consume more than just the cookies. And I encourage you to do the same.

My husband and I stopped in with our toddler on a whim. We had been downtown, but it was nice to get out and explore the quieter neighborhoods. It was totally worth it! All of the staff at Lutz were very helpful and kind. They answered our questions, and made sure we were taken care of. We had the black forest cake, which was really moist and delicious. One of the servers gave our son a free cup of milk and the owner stopped by to chat as well. The atmosphere was relaxing and comfortable. We had a great time! We recommend it!

I picked up a small chocolate ganache cake this morning and the always friendly people at Lutz wrote a birthday message on it for me. Now that it's been birthdayed and served, I'm the cake genius at work. Everyone LOVEd on that cake. Thanks so much for making me look good.

I live a few blocks from Lutz Bakery and it's a wonderful place to work and have lunch. It's so much quieter and more peaceful than any of the local coffee shops. It's not as crowded and they always play this incredibly calming classical music. The owner, Howard, is really generous about pastry samples and most of the girls who work there are attentive and charming. I honestly don't have much of a sweet tooth, so I can't vouch for all the pastries, but their Danishes and almond croissants are AMAZING. Also, their turkey club with cranberry mayo is one of my favorite lunches, something I crave. The Viennese coffee service is such a treat and the outdoor patio feels like a well-kept Chicago secret, perfect for a daytime date or a girlfriend catch-up in the summer. I loved having my baby shower there, even though it looked like it could use a little TLC this past summer. Anyway, I highly recommend Lutz. Try the pastries. Have lunch. And if you're from Chicago, take your mom and your grandma! They always have lovely memories of this place...

Zero stars! I just had the most awful experience ever! I can't believe how awful, nasty, and rude Clarissa was. We have been ordering cakes and stopping by the bakery for their treats for over 26 years! Today we stopped by to order a birthday cake for my nephews 1st birthday. Prior to coming in, my sister (the mother of the birthday boy) called and spoke to the cake decorator and explained to her what she wanted. She told her to come in and they would take care of our cake needs. Later that day we stopped by the bakery and we were rudely greeted by Clarissa. She had the nastiest attitude. She made us feel very uncomfortable from the start. After she made us wait 15 minutes while she was in the back, she comes out and tells us all she can do is take our information down. She didn't even want to answer the simple questions we had. My sister tells her about the conversation she had with the cake decorator earlier in the day and Clarissa tried to discredit that conversation. All we were asking for was a Mickey mouse cake and she made it seem impossible. We had enough of her bad attitude and kindly asked for her name and told her how dissatisfied we were with her service. She got very loud and started yelling at us in front of customers. It was a total embarrassment. She had no shame in her lack of customer service. I understand people have bad days but there is no excuse for her attitude. Our father ordered all of our cakes and it has been a tradition to get out 1st birthday cakes from there. She has completely ruined that experience for us. We will no longer refer people or purchase our cakes from Lutz.

Love it! Such a beautiful authentic bakery! The manager was wonderfully accommodating and I would definitely go back. I've never seen such beautiful cakes. It's also a great place to sit and unwind for a while.

The Conditorei is a faithful transplant of a German shop. The ingredients, quality of finished product, and recipes, are all authentic. My sole disappointment has been the removal of German sandwiches and bar type lunch items from the Café menu. The Café is much simplified now, which, I suppose, makes quality easier to control. I enjoy the café for its ambience, which is one of unparalleled quiet and class (think Ritz-Carlton with no ambient noise), and its German coffee served with real cream, which makes it perfect for consumption of that pastry. The lunch menu does not appeal to me personally, but, never having tried it, I can't comment on the dishes. I marked this as $$ (two signs) only because a typical lunch with pastry and coffee would be well over $20. I usually order a pot of Viennese coffee and a pastry. The bill comes to around $10. ======= 6-14-12 After several return visits, I can see that Lutz's offerings are much smaller than they were in 1975-1982, when I was a regular patron. (The café is much older than 1975.) I have to mark Lutz as 4 1/2 stars for this downgrade. Positive changes since 1970's: The patio is open and available. It is one of those rare outdoor seating areas that is not on a busy street. Also, Lutz offers Groupons ($5 off) fairly regularly. I am waiting to use the last one of three that I purchased earlier this year.

The place looks pretty old and outdated and it was cold outside (the patio area looks pretty interesting) so their was no joy in actually sitting in to enjoy our treats so we got them to go. We tried the strawberry mousse cake and the hazelnut cake. Strawberry mousse was delicious, light, fluffy and exactly what I expected. The hazelnut was just ok and in fact a little to heavy on the hazelnut. After a bite or two the overpowering flavor is almost too much. It's possible that i would stop in for another treat on the go but I wouldn't go out of my way to make it happen.

Dear Lutz, I have high hopes of any baked goods and pastries coming from a Chicago bakery. These hopes were crushed by your overpriced goods. $3.90 for a slice of fresh Bavarian cake is acceptable. $3.90 for a huge chunk of orange flavored sponge cake is acceptable if you like that kind of flavor flav. $3.90 for a slice of hazelnut cake filled mostly with cream makes me feel ripped off. I guess more cream and less cake makes it more profitable for you. But $3.90 for a dinky eclair that tastes like stale cream on a gritty, nutty pastry puff is redonkulous. See you never, Tricia

I'm a klutz for Lutz! I stumbled in here on a Saturday afternoon searching for some treats to take to my mom's hospital room. The ladies were very glad to help me select an appropriate item and were honest about which choices were the best. We left with a 2lb box of cookies. The nurses and mom were thrilled with it. Lutz is a bit on the expensive side but well worth it. Next time I want some of the pastries that are on display. Yummy. There's also a cafe in the other room of the bakery, I'll have to come back for that too, even though the view is probably just the Aldi parking lot, who cares, as long as the foods good right?!

I've been a fan of Lutz for a long time. I love their hazelnut pastries especially. This morning Partner and I decided to hop on the bikes and head over to Lutz for brunch using a Groupon I had purchased. We each ordered the Quiche Lorraine and the coffee service. The adorable yet unassuming savory pie was simply fantastic. The crust was buttery; the custard was rich with cream and cheese. The coffee service took me back to breakfast in Europe. The service was friendly. The space is cozy and welcoming. I had forgotten about the patio; next summer we'll make it a point to visit for lunching outside. We were both so full we couldn't even think about a pastry. The server brought us each a cookie " just a little treat if you change your mind" (which we wrapped and put in the back pack to bring home.)

Let me start by saying, "I'm a fat kid at heart and I'm writing this while eating a cookie." Additionally my partner can't eat wheat therefore I'm often forced to eat various other types of flour that are gritty or taste like beans. A trip to a normal bakery is on par with Disney Land. I stopped by Lutz today to sample a mix of treats. Ignoring the outside and inside, straight to the counter where 3 girls seemed busy helping some people decide on a wedding cake as a line of people formed. The manager, who was just talking with a worker disappeared into the back. Being next in line, I checked out the left side, the right side, my phone briefly for messages... walked around... walked around some more... the left side again... still 3 people helping the couple. After 5 minutes (I know because of the text I sent after walking the counter) the girl asked the women who came in behind me if she could help her... The women politely pointed the girl behind the counter to me. I smiled and asked the girl if she could get a box I wanted to sample a few things. She asked me what I would like. I told her to just pick out what she would like, she ignored me and asked me again if I knew what I wanted... Ok, give me a Hazelnut something-or-other, a puff with fruit. "That's not fruit, it's just strawberry." she corrects me... "OK.... and the the thing above that looks like a filled doughnut." "That's not a doughnut, it's a doughnut shaped puff with chocolate." she corrects me for the second time... She rings me up and tells me the total is $16. In my head all I'm thinking is, "These must be the best pastries I've ever had if she can be this rude while still charging this much." First bite of the Strawberry Chocolate Puff : Pastry is a little soggy from the filling. The filling is extremely heavy, flavored with strawberry flavoring, and leaves a greasy feeling on my tongue. I ate half of it anyways. First bite of the Vanilla Chocolate Puff: Pastry is again soggy from the filling :( The filling is extremely heavy, and leaves a greasy feeling on my tongue. I stop after after 2 bites. The Hazelnut cup cake was interesting, but I wasn't feeling well after eating what amounted to 1 cream puff. Looking over their awards, it looks like 2008-early 2010 was the time to be there. Maybe they have amazing wedding cake? I don't know because I won't be back any time soon.

I very badly wanted to like this place. I do love the sign- for whatever reason it screams "my childhood". But with so many other pastry focused bakeries to choose from Lutz ranks a solid meh. There was nothing wrong with the almond roll ($13.00 I think). It was fresh. There was plenty of almond paste inside. The presentation of their products was beautiful in the clean, well lit cases. But I didn't care for how it was wrapped in plastic wrap and tossed in a bag. Like I said, I really wanted to like it. The young girl behind the counter was very nice although she had to call someone from the back to find out if they had anything with almonds. The not-as-young woman (longish brown hair, mid/ late 20's) who came out from the back was awful. By the way, belated apology, I'm sorry I asked you how sweet the almond roll was. I could tell it really put you out to answer the question of the only customer in the store. Even if your frustration was with the inexperienced, super cute Asian counter girl there's no reason for you to be short with me. The cafe is spacious and, from what I can tell, often empty. The coffee smelled delicious. But then again I can make delicious coffee at home.

My parents have been ordering birthday cakes from Lutz for over 30+ years and they used to order a Rum Cake (they don't make anymore unless you special order it) It's not the same cake like it used to be:( "Rum Cake" yellow sponge cake layers, first filling was a rum/almond with maraschino cherries & juice (it gave it like an almond & rum taste), 2nd filling was white cream with a layer of marzipan and frosted with chocolate buttercream and decorated with chocolate pieces. I'm not sure if there's a second owner or not but the taste has changed. Does anyone know more information about this cake? Strawberry Cake, black forest & the mandarin orange cake slices were also so good!

I have family in Vienna, and the sweets at Lutz makes me feel like I'm back in Austria. With their silver platter coffee and hot chocolate service, and the delicious Viennese-style cakes and pastries, at Lutz I feel as close to Vienna as I can in Chicago. I can honestly say I've never had a bad cake here, and everything is always fresh and delicious. I have been enjoying Lutz's delicious and authentic cakes and pastries since I was a kid. My parents ordered their wedding cake from Lutz 35 years ago, and so did my brother last month. Hopefully, within a year or two, my fiance and I will as well. Despite the fact that I love pretty much everything they have, I do have some staples: the Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte (black forest cake), and also the Marzipan Torte (marzipan cake). I have basically insisted on eating these cakes for every one of my 30 birthdays. They are SO delcious. No dry, tasteless cakes here. The pastries and tortes are always so moist and full of fresh fruit and flavors. The Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte is packed with plump cherries! Also, their strawberry whipped cream cake is pretty much like heaven in your mouth. My sister-in-law got this cake last week for her birthday and it was AH-MAZ-ING. PACKED with strawberries, the cake so moist, and the whipped cream was like a light and fluffy wonderland. Lutz is a classic bakery that has been around for over 40 years. It makes me sad to see people get their desserts at all these trendy new cupcake joints that will surely come and go. The people that gave Lutz three or four star reviews don't know what the hell they are talking about. Go to Lutz and get some bakery that makes you reminisce about sitting in a European cafe, sipping a coffee, and nibbling at some rich, wonderful, sweet delicacy that you think will never hit your lips again once you go back across the pond. You can also sit in their awesome, unchanged patio area and have a nice sit down meal, or even better, order the hot chocolate! It comes out on a silver tray and is thick and creamy and wonderful. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I'm drooling just writing this.

I used a Groupon and took an eclair, a fruit tart, and 3 kolatchkes (sp?) to go. The tart was excellent. The eclair was better than average. (It's filling was whipped cream mixed with custard. It was very good but not great.) The kolatchkes were yummy even after sitting on my counter for several days. I liked it enough to get another Groupon!

While dogsitting in the neighborhood I spotted this place, and decided to check out reviews on yelp. It seemed to me that the reviews were divided and people either love it or hate it. Upon walking in on a Saturday afternoon, the store was empty, there was a clerk behind the counter ready to help me. I asked her questions and she answered them, like others have said, there were no prices listed, but when I asked she quoted them to me. ($2.99 a cupcake, but larger cupcakes) I bought 4 cupcakes: Chocolate, Red Velvet, Cookies n'cream, and Chocolate Chip to share with friends at Ravinia that night. We all liked the Red Velvet and Chocolate the best. The frosting was really tasty and the cake was dense, and not dry like some people complained. The other two were good cupcakes, but nothing amazing. I would go back again.

Mouthwatering selections in the cases when you walk in typical of any decent bakery. They also offer soups/sandwiches. We ate pastries there - very nice dining area. We had a rum ball, a slice of Black Forest cake and a portion of apple/almond/raisin strudel. The rum ball was just ok - barely detectable hint of rum. Austrian Bakery's version is far superior to the Lutz' version. The cake had the most amazing, fluffy whipped cream icing - still thinking about the icing. The strudel was one of the better ones I've had in Chicago. When the weather gets nice I want to go back and eat outside. The area they have for that is really nice.

Hadn't been to Lutz in over 30 years so my husband and I gave it a try and went for pastry and coffee one afternoon. It was pretty good and the coffee is wonderful. However, it is very expensive. Two pieces of pastry are $10 and coffee is $3.75 each. I have sweet memories of this place and will go back again to sit in the garden but I will not go often. Too high-end. After all, this isn't the Gold Coast area!

I knew I was in trouble as soon as I walked into Lutz's. I was the only customer in the shop. I have been going to Lutz's for 30 years and never have been the only customer in the shop. I will admit that it has been several years since I have been there, but had a groupon and needed to buy several cofffeecakes for a retirement party. The number of pastries has decreased. I cannot recall alot of buttercream pastries, as I saw today. They still have the cookies and candy, but no longer bake bread. Wow, their croissants used to be to die for...now, no longer...man, what a disappointment. The Cafe menu has changed. I bought my coffeecakes. Bur, I think I will not be back. Oh, I forgot to tell you that Lutz's has been under new ownership for several years.

I've bought cakes from here over the past four years for birthdays and holidays. Their strawberry whip cream cake is delicious and light! I've heard it's under new ownership, but if everybody keeps suggesting to bring back the old cakes, and more variety then I'm sure it would be in the business' interest to oblige. My favorite cake is the Chocolate cake, the chocolate shell is so good, and the soft fluffy cake is orgasmic. Will definitely be coming back so long as the quality persists.

I actually can't believe I haven't reviewed Lutz before- we go all the time, either to eat brunch or to pick up treats. The service is always friendly and the food is always delicious. And on Saturday's, there is never a wait for dine in service. It's tempting to stick with the sweets here given that they are a bakery, and if you do you won't be disappointed. But if you can, make yourself order a quiche or the goulash. Both are fantastic. Usually I hate paying for quiche, because I know I can make one just as good or better at home. Lutz's quiche is the exception to my rule, though. Their crust is so buttery and flaky, and instead of being served a slice from a larger dish, each quiche here is a large individual portion. This means more perimeter for wrapping in pie crust! My favorite thing about Lutz, though, is the Viennese coffee service. Every order comes with it's own service tray, complete with individual pot of coffee and dish of whipped cream. The coffee is strong enough to make my heart race after a second cup, but that doesn't mean that you can't request refills of both the coffee and the cream to your heart's content. As for the desserts, I haven't had one yet that I didn't like. And while they go perfectly with the coffee service, they're also great for take away. The boxes of cookies make a great hostess gift for a dinner party, or to bring home for an afternoon snack.

I hosted my cousin's bridal shower here on June 8th. We had the absolute best service and the owner Howard introduced himself to me and was simply amazing. I would highly recommend this place for a nice garden party. The theme was Alice in Wonderland and was nice for the 17 guests. The garden is quaint and perfect for private parties. The guests enjoyed the food and complimented the service.

Cafe Lutz is a gem. The pastries are outstanding, and the food is good, too. I thoroughly enjoy the way they serve coffee in the cafe: on a gleaming silver platter, with a paper doily. Your platter will have the following on top of the doliy: a small, individual, coffee pot, small carafe of cream, a small pot of sweetened, whipped cream, and the cup/saucer/spoon. (Sugar and sweeteners are on the tables). There is something decdent about drinking coffee with swirls of melting, whipped, cream. The only problem I have is that when the tables are full, and the counter is busy, it can be a bit of a tight squeeze - but tht just speaks to the popularity of the establishment. Lutz is truly a gem, and I will continue to make the trip as long as they're open.

So, I live a block or so away and came here when I first moved in because I needed the internet and ComSUCK could not seem to get it together and hook up my cable... Anyway, I ordered a coffee, and was utterly astonished. It was great and they have beautiful silver service. They also serve the coffee with cream and whipped cream on the side. (Check out the picture) It was fabulous, so what did I do? I felt compelled to buy pastries :-/ So, I got some cakes and a strudel and shared it with some family and friends. HOLY COW STRUDEL! Absolutely gorgeous and perfect! There is a reason they have been in business so long! .

I remember this place had a sign in the 1990s that said something like "Siet 1745" or something like that and listed Mr. Lutz as a Konditorei. Since I have a good friend in Austria operating a working Konditorei we had to go in way back when because only a long certification and special licence allow you to market yourself as a Konditor. There are bakeries in Austria that have 2-3 trained pastry chefs but only one Konditor. I think some of the problems people have had with quality is that I bet there is no one working here who went off to Germany or Austria to learn how to maintain the standards and learn some new recipes. I have no ideas if the ownership is the same or who the operators are. August 1997: We had them prepare our wedding cake and we were extremely happy. I think it was a 4 layer with marzipan and it felt like a shame to share it with my in laws. The marriage did not last, but boy that cake was something else. They prepared a wonderful creation and delivered it to our reception in pristine condition. September 2009: This time around, I walked in here with a friend visiting from Indiana who had lived in Vienna for years and he is a generally grumpy sort so I worried he might not like this place, but he loved it. We had pastries and coffee and he even bought a dozen rolls to bring back to Indiana. Now my friend complains of two things in the USA: too much sugar and too soggy: I think that Lutz' is still not preparing sugar bombs like most American bakeries. Also, cakes in Europe are dryer since they are not loaded with pudding and oil. My friend bought and ate a few things and brought others home. He seemed to think that they were authentic. The coffee was good, but I wish they had old man Lutz preparing Austrian style 30 second run espresso shots for real cups of Kleiner Brauner. Daily Suggestion: Go on the weekends early and get pastries to bring home, or any other time you need quality sweets. Wedding Cakes: I don't think they have sent anyone back to Germany or Austria to maintain the Konditorei certification, but if they are still making wedding cakes I suggest you go for the ones with Marzipan!

Grandma's bday cake! I came in the pick up my grandmother's birthday cake and I was quickly greeted as I walked in! I ended up going for the traditional yellow cake with strawberries and whipped cream frosting...The texture was fluffy and taste rich..but it didn't wow me! Perhaps they could have added more fresh strawberries as opposed to the strawberry filling.... Another negative was during the transaction when my card was swiped...Some how on my statement it showed to charges for the cake and i had to wait 3-5 business days for the pending transaction to be returned to my account...Not sure how I feel about that... Eh...all in all I'll stick to Rosers or Jewel.

I would have loved to give Lutz five stars--ten years ago it would've been a no-brainer but today, not so much. Like many other Lutz yelpers, my family has been frequenting Lutz since well before I was born, for more than 30 years! Lutz's cakes, especially the marzipan torte, used to be the benchmark by which every other cake, even those from bakeries in Vienna and Paris, would be compared. Alas, no longer. The change in ownership has really affected the quality of the cakes, cookies, and candies. Gone are the displays of charming marzipan animals. Gone is the rotating cake display that would keep my little eyes occupied for the 20 minutes or so that it took for my mom to place her order. Today, Lutz stoops to the lowest common denominator. Mediocre-looking red velvet cake? Check. Unexciting whipped cream cakes? Check. Their fabulous black forest cake, the best I'd ever had anywhere in the world, is now dry and unremarkable. Put back the cherry-rum filling! Bring back the chocolate mousse! What a disappointment. The marzipan torte is no longer crafted with the same amount of care. (The slices we bought this past weekend were sweating from being crafted days before, frozen, and defrosted, and the marzipan layer looked limp and was falling off.) Bring back that marzipan roll cake, with the apricot and whipped cream filling! Most importantly, honor the gorgeous, unique quality of years before!! Lutz used to be the best I'd ever had. Today, it's just another bakery. I am heartbroken.

A couple friends and I stopped in this bakery this afternoon and what a great treat for us!!!! We got to sample cookies and truffles and cupcakes. This bakery has a small cafe inside and they have a pretty nice menu. There aren't a ton of things on the menu, sandwiches and quiches, but it was well thought out. The display case is filled with German delights - Black Forest cakes and cupcakes, apple strudel, marzipan creations, lovely truffles. The young lady who waited on us was very polite and helped us decide which things to purchase as we were there buying for an Oktoberfest. The owner came out and greeted us as well. There is a small patio in the back where, when it's conducive to do so, you can have your sandwich and soup outside. Great experience for us. We can't wait to go back.

I made a pilgrimage here after a Food Network show about the long tree cake. On the upside, I learned a few new bus routes and now I know how to get back. As for the Baumkuchen I sought, it was all but gone. I got a hockey puck slice that at least gave me an idea. Note to self: If it's on the Food Network on Saturday, you might call on Monday to see if they have what you seek.

Used a Groupon to buy cookies. I've had much better cookies in the city.. perhaps I'll try the cakes next time. When I was a child, my parents used to buy the decorative cakes here for birthdays. It's unfortunate that they're not up to par from how I remember it.

We were having some people over for dinner and stopped by Lutz earlier this week to pick up some dessert. Got there at 7:00, right when they were closing. The owner was walking out/closing up, but accomodated us and allowed us to come in which we greatly appreciated. He was extremely helpful when we were making our decisions, had zero issue with us coming in after hours and taking our time looking everything over and threw in a cookie for our daughter and a brownie for us to try, which was pretty damn good! I appreciated how cool he was with letting us come in rather than telling us sorry, they're closed up and to come back the next day. Places like this are exactly why we like to support the small business owner in the Lincoln Square area. The cakes have always been consistant and great over the years, but we tried the marzipan this time and it was awesome!

I live just a few blocks from Lutz. They have a wonderful selection of cakes, cupcakes, cookies and various other baked goods and treats. It's my go-to place for picking up desserts for parties and dinners. I usually get a slice of 3-4 different things bring, and there are never any leftovers. My favorite thing about Lutz is the coffee, though. Here's your perfect May or September Sunday afternoon. Go to Lutz, relax on the patio in the back, order the coffee service. It's regal! It is served on a platter with bowls of sugar and whipped cream. I've also done brunch a couple of time, the quiche is quite good, and finding a table is usually easy to do. So don't just think of Lutz as a place to drop in and grab your cakes and go, stick around for a while and get your coffee and grub on!

This place is AMAZING!!! My parents got a birthday cake here a few years back that was delicious, so I decided to go and try some of the other sweet treats they offer. I ended up getting cheesecake, some cookies, chocolate mousse cake and a raspberry tart! Everything was absolutely delectable! The nice man who owns the place even came out and chatted for a bit, and later, sent us home with a generous taste of German chocolate cake which was to die for! Hands down one of, if not THE BEST bakery in Chicago, and not just because of the delicious food, but simply because they care about their business and their customers.

i'd rate the recent strawberry/pineapple, whip cream, two layer high b/cake cake i recently order a 4 out of 5. This is a huge improvement from a few years back, when their cakes were terrible. Let's hope they continue to improve, since Lutz use to be one of the best around..

I think Lutz Pastry Shop has taken a hit lately. I just ordered a Black Forest cake and they severely cut down on the amount of filling held within. A few years prior, there was a full layer of cherries and now there are very few. That said, I still think this is a quality pastry shop that puts out a solid product. Everyone is looking to cut costs, but I will never order a cake there again as I am not receiving the same quality that I am used to.

I hosted a baby shower in the Cafe's outdoor garden last weekend. It was perfect and I received a ton of compliments on the party! The lunch (choice of quiche, crepes or tomato basil pizza slice) was delicious, the service very attentive, and we did a selection of mini-pastries for dessert and they were amazing! We had just 13 people, but decided to reserve the garden for our private use and it was wonderful. I would think the space could comfortably hold 30 people and I highly recommend it for bridal or baby showers, or possibly a little girl's birthday. Great space, great service! I will definitely recommend you to friends in the area. Thank you Lutz!

With the wife working on Saturday, my daughter and I went for some cookies. Not a huge selection but then ones we bought were good. It seems that their focus is on pies and larger desserts, which we did not have. But most of these looked very good and I will be coming back for a birthday cake soon!

I truly wanted to love Lutz's but it just fell flat. There were definitely parts that made me feel warm and fuzzy, but overall I was not overly impressed. Things that they are doing great: coffee, tomato bisque soup (be prepared for it to come with an orange slice and dollop of whip cream), turkey sandwich, and hands down the best was....quiche lorraine. It should be obvious that any combination of egg, cheese, pastry crust, and bacon would be a success, but Lutz completely nailed this one. There was probably an entire stick of butter involved, but in the most glorious way. The shop itself has charm, very Mom & Pop with a definite Euro vibe. You walk into seeing glass counters displaying 50 feet of old school bake shop goodies. The back patio is covered with AstroTurf and law furniture. There are curtains inside that don't cover any actual windows, and classical music is quietly played in the background. Things that were misses: stale rolls, "kettle chips" that were really just classic Lays (which I love), baumkuchen, and the service. First off, the reason we came here was for the baumkuchen. After seeing Kid in a Candy Store we were immediately convinced that we would love the thinly layered cake coated with chocolate. In fact, there wasn't any available while we were enjoying our food so we placed an order and came back for our slice an hour later. Problem #1 it costs $7 for a small slice. Problem #2 it doesn't taste very good. The service has potential to improve. They had about 5 women working as servers from what I could tell, yet they seemed completely unorganized. There was one sweet young girl who just kept filling our water every five minutes but could not answer any of our questions and seemed terrified as she went from table to table (have some confidence darling!). We waited 10 minutes at a table before we finally got up to help ourselves to menus, and then were acknowledged. The service was slow and they seemed overwhelmed. I will say that I appreciated the owner coming over to see how we were doing and making conversation. This may not be my favorite place in the city, but I have a feeling it holds a special place in a few old time Lincoln Square inhabitants (i.e. not 30 something NPR supporters).

Sooooo.....this is the thing. I love baked goods. If there was an organized tour of Chicago bakeries I would be first in line. Therefore, you can imagine how excited I was to visit Lutz. The history, the reviews...it all said, "Kim, you're going to love this place." Kim did not love this place. Everything looked so amazing, so it was hard to decide on a treat. I chose the rum cake and my boyfriend went for the famous baumkuchen. The rum cake was was completely devoid of any flavor and was "I need a glass of water to wash this down with" dry. Worse, I think my boyfriend may have chipped a tooth on his baumkuchen. Bummer, huh? Prices are high and quality is low. I'm still trying to figure out what all the hubbub is about...

Back when I was a kid, and into my teenage years, I'd very often get their German Chocolate cakes for my birthday parties. This place never disappointed, and I loved those cakes very much. It's funny E. V. mentioned the marzipan tops on their cakes, as I got into the same fights over eating those! I can't remember some of the other non-cake pastries I've had here in the past, the very handful of times I made trips here outside of getting cakes. But I remember some of them were good, and some weren't. Still though, I'm hoping soon that I can make it here again for the first time in years. (and hopeful it hasn't declined in quality, like some think has occurred) Especially since for whatever reason, I've never been able to check out their outdoor patio, and would like to check it out before it closes for the year. *crosses fingers that I achieve said goal soon*

I've only been here once, and of course I didn't get to try EVERYTHING on the menu, but here's what I did try: Mocha cake - I was really really really disappointed by this cake. The layers of cake were inedibly dry, and while the mocha buttercream was good there wasn't enough in between the layers. The chocolate sprinkles on the outside were a little dry too. Sad face. Almond Bread - this was pretty good actually. The bread had a hint of sweetness but still tasted like bread. Has toasted almonds on the outside if you're into that. Spinach quiche - the crust on this was really delicious. Firmer than most other quiche crusts but also pretty flaky. The quiche itself was fine, nothing notable. I tried my friend's ham and cheese quiche and thought the consistency was better on that one. Coffee - if you check in on foursquare you get a free coffee! The coffee is strong for my taste, but they give you a cute little bowl of whipped cream to put into it. We ate outside (mid-August), and the flies were EVERYWHERE. It was really kind of gross and made me not want to sit outside again. Ever.

One thing I disliked right away is that there are lots of things on display but no prices anywhere around them. I don't like having to constantly ask what things cost. I've had a few shocking moments ordering baked goods from places and it's always nice to know if something is in the $2 dollar range or in the $7 dollar range - bakeries in this city can vary greatly in price. Here all the cake slices are $4.50. I've only tried the black forest cake from here and it was really good but it wasn't the best I've ever had like from Bennison's. Here's I do think is amazing and crave worthy. The quiche. Order the bacon quiche and heat it up late at night when you are craving a snack. The crust is light and fluffy, They don't skimp on the cheese and it's really one of the best late night snacks ever. The girls that worked here were insanely nice. Parking is very easy. I've been meaning for years to have tea out on the back patio in the summer but still have yet to get around to it.

Nothing arty-farty or "eclectic" about Lutz or its pastries and candies, which in this bakery's case is a beautiful thing. Rows and rows of perfectly-made old-school goodies as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate. I visited Lutz when I had some time to kill and hadn't eaten breakfast yet. I chose to not get my food and coffee to go, because the dining area was clean and quiet and equipped with wi-fi. I had a cappucino and a breakfast quiche that was...well...how do I describe it? Because, see, I've had bacon, and I've had cheese, and I've had pastry - sometimes all at once - but Lutz's breakast quiche? Sweet tap-dancing Jesus. I think they used magic eggs to bind everything together, because that quiche was out of this world. Of course, afterward I felt all greasy and guilty about it but man was it good while it lasted. I'm taking one star off for the service, though. While polite, it was extremely slow, especially in light of the fact that I was pretty much their only customer that AM. Oh, well.

I am going to provide you with four scenarios: 1) You and a friend are looking for a place to have some good coffee and a delicious treat with friendly service. For the love of God and Baby Jesus, get off of Yelp, power down the computer and go here. Now! 2) You are doing some entertaining and want a good variety of reasonable priced, delicious desserts. For the love of God and Baby Jesus, get off of Yelp, power down the computer and go here. Now! 3) You just have a sweet tooth that needs to be satisfied. For the love of God and Baby Jesus, get off of Yelp, power down the computer and go here. Now! 4) ]Insert your own scenario here] For the love of... Oh you know the drill already! Just do it... Now!

Totally do not get the hype about this place. I understand it's been around for years, but that doesn't mean it's great. The cake is so dry. All of it. Their famed "tree cake" has a good almond flavor but, again, dry dry dry. I've tried more cake than I care to admit because I live so close by, but haven't found one I'd call great yet. I've found that the marzipan and red velvet are the best, but even those are nothing to write home about. I'm giving them 3 stars because I actually have had good counter service there. Also, the couple of cookies I've had were good, and their quiches are pretty tasty, too.

Lutz's is the best. My mom and I threw a bridal shower here and the staff were extremely accommodating, nice, and helpful. We were indoors, and I called ahead about a month prior to the shower to reserve the space, plan the menu, and talk general logistics. The day of, they were ready for us at least 60 minutes before the party began so we had plenty of time to set up. Everyone had a lovely time and there were plenty of extra treats so everyone could take some home. All in all, if you're looking for a great place to host a shower, Lutz's should be on your list!

Lutz used to be my favorite sweet shop but has recently become hit or miss. My family has been getting cakes here for 30+ years, but there was a good 5-year gap that started around 2002, which I think coincided with the change in ownership. As other reviewers commented, the quality of the cakes/tortes declined (I think they sacrificed the quality of the ingredients), but they still have me coming back for the strawberry chocolate mousse cake, turtle cookies, and their hamburgers (not a real burger, but instead a croissant shaped pastry filled with poppy seed filling). Since the ownership change, I now avoid the grand marnier cake (which used to be amazing) but has since been retooled to remove the bottom crust and what appears to be a decline in the quality of the whipped cream. These are still must haves. It's disappointing that even the quality of the marzipan roses that adorned their cakes has consistently gotten worse. They used to be soft and creamy, but are now brittle and overly sweet. Also, the waitstaff while always friendly could get a refresher in general food service protocol. The last time I picked up a b-day cake on 9/2/12, I waited for 15 minutes as the lady behind the counter focused on cleaning the espresso machine instead of helping me. Maybe one day I can buy this place and restore it to what it once was.

Lutz's is simply the best! If you want a taste of euro pastry, marzipan, strudel, amazing cakes or even a sit-down coffee service, served on a silver platter with your own little silver coffee pot and whipped heavy cream to mix in - this is your place! My family has been going here forever. My parents got their wedding cake from Lutz and I insist on getting every one of my birthday cakes here (the Black Forest Cake, aka Schwartzwalder Torte) with the signature tart cherries is my personal favorite. You NEED to try it! Make sure when you call or go in for a cake that you tell them how many it's supposed to serve. They are more than happy to make you a size that will accommodate all at your party. For my 30th I had them make a huge cake for 30 people and when I pulled it out the whole party was blown away. It was a BIG cake :-) I have also had them make custom special creations. Go go check them out - bring a friend, have a piece of cake and a coffee in the back garden (on the same awesome neon-green astroturf they have had forever) and then go to the gym after. Also try their quiche - quite yummy too. Thanks Lutz's - from the whole clan! See ya soon!

The last time I was there was about 5 yrs ago and it was good then. We went there this time because we had a groupon. 2 stars because only the coffee was good with whipped cream on the side and the staff was very pleasant, but that's about it. I had the quiche lorraine which was suppose to have bacon, I guess they forgot to put it in! My husband had a crepe which was blazing hot, seriously, if I want microwaved food, I'll stay home. Even with the $10 groupon we ended up paying about $18 which in my opinion is a bit much for food that isn't fresh or made to order. Total disappointment.

I stopped in for some coffee and breakfast sweets. I asked if I could I have an iced coffee as it was a typical hot and humid Chicago summer day. I was informed there was no iced drinks. Next, I asked about the fillings in a small pastry, and was informed the options were apricot, cheese or strawberry. I asked for 3 cheese and 3 strawberry. As my order was being filled, another customer walked in and was being served by a different server, and this customer ordered an iced coffee, and asked about the same pastries that I had asked about and was informed the choices were apricot, cheese, and raspberry. Really? I waited to see if the person serving me would inform me of her mistake as she was standing right next to the person announcing the types of pastries. Nope. I left with 3 cheese and 3 raspberry pastries, and a hot coffee. Felt it was on the pricey side especially considering the poor service. They should know what is in their pastry case.

Well I upped my rating for two reasons. 1) The service was MUCH improved from the last visit and I'm inclined to believe the better service is more typical of what you'd experience based on other reviews and the fact that this place has been around forever and 2) My daughter's fruit covered custard-y tart thing that she ate while doing the scene out of When Harry Met Sally. You know which one. The few other things we picked out were again, good enough. We were in the area and had another Groupon to use up. I figured it to be our last visit but after the much improved service and that tart thing we'll be back to find more gems. I'd like to sit inside and have some coffee one of these days but we're always so doggone full from lunch at El Cubanito (which is the reason we drive all the way out there).

I love this place! This bakery has been here my entire life, and is always really good. This is the only true German bakery/cafe' left in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. (Actually, a little outside the neighborhood - but worth walking an extra 2 blocks!) During the warmer months, enjoy a delicate lunch, coffee and pastry in the pretty outdoor garden; otherwise, nice tables indoors. Pricy - but - worth it for the best butter cream frosting and best-ingredients/best cake you will ever eat.

I had a groupon to use, so I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon to pick up some pasteries to go. As I went in, I saw a sign that said they had just recently been featured on the Food Network! It's always good and bad when this happens to a small business, because they get a LOT more business, but they can't quite handle it all! The phones were ringing off the hook when I went inside, and after I looked at the cases for a few minutes, about 10 more people came in behind me. So it got pretty busy, and the owner seemed a little flustered. However, they took care of all my questions about the different things in the case, and had no problems checking me out in a timely fashion. I got a 1/2 loaf of the almond strussel (or is it strudel?) and one of the famous round layers from their chocolate Baumkuchen, which was the featured item on the show. The Baumkuchen was pretty good, kind of a weird texture since it has lots of layers, but good. The stussel was amazing!!!! So good with my coffee, with a donut and bread like texture, and almond brown sugar weaving throughout. MMMmmmm so good.

I have been on a quest to find the best cupcake in Chicago. In my search I have found some gems...Lutz was definitely NOT one of them. In fact, I believe I have found the absolute worst cupcake in Chicago. I ordered a simple vanilla cupcake with pink frosting. Should be good right? Wrong. The outside of the cupcake was dry and crunchy. In addition, Lutz has managed to make a cupcake that seems to have an oil filing. It tasted stale and disgusting. The frosting was pink, but the m&m's had melted into it making it appear slimy and gross. When I bit into the frosting it was actually rubbery. How that's possible on a Sunday morning? Even the coffee was less than stellar. If I could give this place negative stars, I would. I find myself only pointing it out to friends as the "Worst Cupcake in Chicago."

I'm feeling homesick. I'm always feeling homesick. But I feel homesick for those ridiculously tacky white buttercream cakes with the gloppy sugared up strawberries. Remember the Cosby Show episode when it was Claire's birthday? She didn't want a cake and what does Cliff do? Brings her out one cake. She turns it away. He brings out another cake. She shakes her head at him. He brings out THREE cakes, does a little dance and leaves one. She takes a little lick of one and he catches her. That tacky white cake in that episode is what I've been getting for my birthdays since I was 4. No matter what state I was living in, somehow Mom always got me a Lutz buttercream cake. Not this year though. This year I'm 25 and old enough to not get cake. Says her. I'm coming back to Chicago on my 6 month anniversary birthday just to get this cake I dream about. This tacky white cake with 8 big strawberries, tons sliced almonds and butter. You people at Lutz better have one ready when I walk in 'cause yes I can take one down by myself and I have the birthday pictures to prove it. I dream of it, I crave it and I will have it.

I bought a Groupon for Lutz Cafe several months ago and finally decided to give it a try for lunch this weekend. I liked the cute dining room as well as outdoor patio, but decided to sit inside. I ordered the chicken and mushroom crepe, which was good but what was supposed to be a hollandaise sauce ended up for being a greasy mess of cheese - I hope my arteries forgive me! The beef goulash was very good. For dessert we had the fruit tart, which was fresh and quite enjoyable. The service was good too. All in all a good experience.

It should be stated that I've never actually dined in here, I've only ever ordered birthday cakes here. Their cakes are to die for. After sampling quite a few, I've now stuck to my Strawberry Chocolate Mousse, which is just perfection - not too sweet, plenty of FRESH strawberries. I've actually taken a whole cake on a flight to my sister in LA because it's just that good (I actually carried it in a large plastic bag with a zip lock bag full of ice!). I've also bought 2 coffee cakes here before which were delicious as well.

DO NOT buy a strudel here thinking that you will get a real strudel. It's amazing to find a, supposedly, Austrian bakery that has no clue what strudel dough is. Certainly, not the thick, gluey, dough that they use here. Strudel should be made of multiple layers of very thin, crispy and flaky dough. More like the phyllo dough that baklava is made of. The cherry filling was just okay -- canned pie filling, not fresh. (The apple filling also looked canned). This is NOT what a strudel is, and not what I expected or wanted to serve for dessert. Considering the pedestrian quality, the prices here are high . If you want cakes that taste like they're made from a commercial mix, you can go to the Jewel and get this quality for a lot less money. Although the bakery was spotless, the cafe looked tired and a bit run down, not at all inviting. I should mention that I used a Groupon so the pastry was discounted, and I still feel that it was overpriced for the quality. Based on the "strudel", I wouldn't bother trying anything else here.

We've been getting their white whipped cream cake filled with fresh strawberry for our family birthdays for last 25 years!!! Not a fan of any other pastry there...but the cake...oh...the cake...T_T They have always been very helpful and sincere when helping out...AND!! Oh I almost forgot!!! Their holiday cookie selections and valentine's day chocolate selections are fairly good as well :D

I lived in Germany and Austria for many years and one thing I consistently miss is the Caffee & Konditorei places there. The pastries are so warm and light and fluffy. I love food in the US, but the baked goods here just don't measure up. Therefore I was pleased to discover Lutz, an apparently authentic Germany bakery! While nothing was particularly bad, it didn't meet my expectations. I had a piece of apple strudel. Strudel is supposed to be crispy and airy and emphasize the filling. This strudel was too thick and too sweet. It had like 10 layers of flakes before hitting the apples and a weird soft crumby layer. However, the apple filling was good and if I stripped down the dough, it almost tasted like home. My boyfriend had a lemon log, which was, again, much too sweet (the outside was a thick sugar crust) and not particularly flavorful. The place has an authentic feel. It at least looks like a German bakery. We went on Sunday and it was pretty dead. We were the only people sitting. The woman who took our orders was sullen and short. I've had more enjoyable pastries at Starbucks. I don't think I'll be back.

Everything looks amazing but tastes like nothing. I have gotten a a couple of pastries to-go a couple of times in hopes that my first experience was wrong but I gave up. The counter service was good. The pastries were really pricey. I would have been happy paying that much if what I were tasting tasted like something other than bland air. Wont be back.

I was looking forward to a leisurely day of coffee and gabbing with a friend and getting some work and fun done via laptop/internet. Lutz let us down. First, the internet was down and had been for sometime according to the staff. Second, the food was subpar. I had the spinach and swiss quiche which resulted in some stomach discomfort later and a dobash for dessert which was terribly dry. For coffee I ordered the Viennese coffee service. The pot was hot (quite hot to the touch) and yet the coffee was cool. I previously stopped in Lutz for a fruit pastry to go and it was good. So, if you are looking for a to go breakfast pastry, stop by Lutz. If you are looking for a coffee shop experience, you may wish to look further.

We went to this place on a summer morning and had coffee and food out on the back patio. The coffee was really delicious and came with whipped cream on the side. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was not as good. My boyfriend had a quiche: the eggs were fluffy but the pastry was really thick all the way around and overly buttery. It really needed to be thinner on the bottom and perhaps a smaller portion size. I had a cherry danish, which was ok: good, flaky pastry but the filling was not fresh. The service was alright. Our waitress was very, very nice but it took forever to get served at first. The decor is pretty bad. All I kept thinking was, "what if Robert Irvine from Restaurant: Impossible saw this?!" The inside is way too dated and feels like a retirement home and the outside is inexplicably done in astroturf. It all needs a little updating and freshening and maybe more young people will want to stop in. I really like supporting small local businesses, especially bakeries, but I just couldn't give this a good review. Hopefully, since they've been around forever, they can make a few changes and revive this place. It's really very cute and they seem to love serving the community.

This is the type of bakery people visit after church on Sunday. It's meticulously maintained and cheerful in a grandmother sort of way. The staff was happy and patient with all my "what's this?" pastry questions. Even for us late-risers and Sunday afternoon patrons, their showcase was still packed with a huge selection that could stand alongside a Parisian patisserie. I got a cupcake and a donut, which were both very traditional. Good basic stuff doesn't need anything wild to be good though. They also have a nice and clean seating area that's a throwback to the 1950's.

A bridal shower was the occasion, my good friend Diana decided to have hers at the lovely Lutz Cafe....I was happy to hear it as I remembered the lovely pastries. They did not disappoint at all! It was overcast all day but we were still able to be outside on the patio with its' wrought iron cafe tables and umbrellas (which BTW also has a cute little pool/fountain and makes you feel really chic...) We had a full lunch served and I had the spinach crepes which were a bit disappointing. I guess maybe I should stick to sweet things on my crepes. One of the ladies at my table joked that she also only preferred Nutella on a crepe. I have to agree with her, the crepe was good but the spinach was canned and just blah. The sweets were, as always, amazing and full of those lovely calories we all love to hate. We had a sampling of cupcakes, truffles, eclairs and even a gorgeous 7 layer cake. Well, not all of us had all of those things......but we wanted to. Most of us shared a piece of cake and a bite of the eclair because lets face it, some of those girls have bridesmaid dresses to get into. A wonderful time, great sweets, less memorable food. Come for cake.

I wish I had better things to say about Lutz, I so had wanted to love it. I'll get the negatives out of the way first - their wi-fi was not working, and normally I don't really care about things like that but this particular day I had gone to Lutz in the hopes of spending an afternoon with pastries and Internet. The waitress said it had been down for a long time. For a bakery, their pastries were a disappointment - I had the hazelnut cream cake, and while the cake was good and moist the cream part didn't have a flavor and I felt like I was eating lard. My friend had the dobash, which was dry. On the other hand, there was lots of room to spread out, it was clean, service was fast and friendly, and the quiche lorraine was excellent. I will definitely give them another chance, but won't count on the wi-fi!

We went in to this place on a Group-on. And I have to say, I am so glad that we did. ITs rare when I find a place like this so welcoming. I was worried at first because it seemed like it might be a bit like someplace my grand-mother might like. Turns out she would but so did I and thats Lutz for you. First off, let me say their food service was great. Took a moment for them to warm up to us but once they did it was really a great time. Friendly, open, lots of good advice and a solid rapport. Next came the food, and oh lord was it tasty. Mushroom soup that was absolutely perfect on a cold winters day. A quiche that managed to not only fill me up but made my list of foods I'd want if I had only one day left to live. An amazing breakfast and a fine lunch as well. Then, we got dessert. Okay, this place has dessert in quantity that could bury a person. They'd die happy trying to eat themselves out of it too. Let me his the highlights... Hazelnut Log, light, tasty, amazing texture. Strawberry whipped cream cake, so tasty, not too sweet and amazing strawberry flavor. Mazipan cake, great gods this was good, layers of cake and mazipan that could kill me so easily but it'd be worth it. So good. Red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing, a little whipped cream mixed in the icing makes it a little lighter but still amazingly tasty. All this AND ana amazing coffee service that was the perfect end to a great meal.

Today was my first real Lutz experience and I must say I loved it. I sat in back to get some coffee and a cookie until I saw they had food too! I had no idea! So I got a turkey club and house salad combo with coffee service. The coffee service was cute as hell and came with a little tray, a silver pitcher filled with coffee, cream, and a side of whipped cream. The coffee was light, but very enjoyable. easy to drink, hence I helped myself to not one, but two pots and read a magazine. The salad was simple but crunchy and tasty, and the sandwich was simple but piled with yummy shredded turkey and garnished with a pickle and chips. yum. I then ordered a raspberry heart cookie which was super tasty and delightful. The rest of the customers appeared to be in their 50's and up, which resulted in me feeling slightly like an old German man. But I liked it. Classical music played and customers talked in soft tones. Very relaxing. no kids running amuck or moms with doublewide strollers. Then again, it was a Tues afternoon, so weekends could be different. The service was a little slow and the price a bit steep ($17 including tip) but all in all a great slice of my day. I will definitely be going back to Lutz.

A bit pricey but great desserts. Anything with chocolate is the best here.

Great coffee, ok pastries, poor service. I went with my husband thinking it was going to be great, we decided to stay inside, the place is charming, and very European look. However the service was poor the waitress, how ever many they were, are disorganized, rude and seem as if they scold when answering a question. the tree cake, it was ok a bit overpriced for my tasted. I may go back but not sure. I had better pastries than there. If you want a pastry to die for go to Sweet Mandy B's. If you are just coming for coffee, this is a good place to have a very strong coffee. Just have the exact amount and don't ask any questions to the staff, they are rude!

Lutz has been a staple for celebrations in my family for years. From birthdays to graduations, we would drive over an hour from the IL/WI border, where we lived, to Lutz to pick up the heavenly dessert that we ordered. Thankfully, I live only minutes away and can still pop in every now and then. As a German bakery, their delights aren't too sugary like most places and their whipped cream cakes are so light and fresh-tasting. Staff-members have always been so kind and friendly and they never make you feel rushed to order. I've been to some really good bakeries in Chicago, but none will ever live up to the high quality of Lutz's. I soooo want a cupcake now...

We went into Lutz last weekend to escape the cold. What a great experience! We tried a bunch of different desserts and although it's hard to choose a favorite, I'm going to have to vote for the strawberry whipped cream cake. If you're eating in, the cafe has an inviting and cozy atmosphere. Plus, we still had great service even though it was very busy because of the holiday season. Thanks Lutz!

My now husband and I chose this bakery for our wedding cake for many reasons: my parents had their wedding cake made from this bakery 26 years ago and absolutely loved theirs! we went for the cake tasting the staff were so helpful and friendly. When we were describing what we wanted, the cake designer Helita was taking notes and drawing sketches as we talked. Not to mention: the cake was awesome! My cake was neopilitan with strawberry and chocolate mousse filling and marzipan frosting! I also had my grooms cake made here- Chicago bulls logo with red velvet filling- such a surprise considering I sent them a picture of what I wanted and went on a limb not knowing what we would get! Absolutely what we wanted and more!

Lutz Pastry Shop is the best Chicago has to offer. I went in there a few days ago for the first time. The staff was very friendly and helped us pick out a few different desserts to try. Every one of them was amazing! No joke, this is the best bakery I have ever been to. If you have not been there yet, go have a few desserts at Lutz Pastry immediately... I promise you will be happy that you did!

This rating is not for another food experience, but for my experience trying to contact them. They were extremely rude when I called to voice my displeasure. I tried to get two sentences in about how I disliked the Baumkuchen and they literally hung up on me. ALSO: It appears that Lutz has been getting some mixed-to-poor reviews lately. However, if you look at some recent, subsequent reviews, they give FIVE STARS.... Hmmmm..... Look at the profiles. As of this update, these FIVE STAR accounts have only one Yelp review each (Lutz), and all three accounts were created recently. Ummm..... Can you say "unethical"? The Lutz staff/owners/family are posing as Yelp users and are inflating their own Yelp rating. Instead of creating fake customer accounts, how about improving your products and customer service for your real customers?

Stopped by Lutz to use a groupon and had high hopes as I've enjoyed their cakes at parties. I had a slice of chocolate meringue cake and a cup of mocha. Overall it was good but the cake and mocha were a bit too sweet for me (and I love chocolate!) I was also bummed that I couldn't enjoy the outdoor garden.. as I had no idea they close it 1 hour before the store closes. I will be back to enjoy the pleasures of outdoor dining.. and to also use another groupon (too expensive otherwise!) pastry 3 stars.. price 2 stars

I always get the tiramisu. If you like a dense, moist, light and lightly sweetened cake, this is very much for you. If you're into super-sweet confetti cake with confetti frosting, this is not for you. If you've had Vietnamese baked goods, I'd compare the consistency of Lutz' cake to the kind of light, airy, pound cake they sell in Vietnamese bakeries, in those coffee filter-like cup-shaped paper things. Besides the tiramisu, I've had the chocolate croissant, the hazelnut cake, the bavarian cream cake, the double chocolate cake, and what I think was the brandy cake. And I had some kind of ball-shaped chocolate covered pastry/meringue type thing. The bavarian cream cake was my least favorite. It had a layer of chocolate on top, with fancy white pinstriping designs in it. Then there were alternating layers of flaky phyllo/pastry dough and bavarian creme. It was kind of hard to eat because my fork kept folding all the layers instead of slicing into it. The creme and phyllo layers started tasting too rich and buttery after awhile. A couple of their cake items are way heavy on the whip cream filling, with not enough layers of cake inside. I love whip cream so the tiramisu is perfect but my husband finds it's too much. I recommend the double chocolate cake (the whip cream one, dunno if there is a buttercream version) and the tiramisu. The chocolate croissant was delish too, good with some coffee.

the 5 stars are for the strawberry & whipped cream cake. That cake has been the birthday car\ke for my brother, sister & I since we were babies. In all the years of going to Lutz, I have never purchased anything else. This has to be the best tasting cake for any occasion. The prices have gone up substantially on one of the cakes ($32.95) but I guess that's the price you pay for perfection.

First time at Lutz today and I heard great things about it. I had a little pizza that had cheese, basil and tomato on it. Not bad, the crust was really buttery and good. I then had a fruit tart type thing for desert which was really good. Nothing stood out to me so thats why i have to give it a 3. A nice place that I wouldn't shun in the future but I also wouldn't run to go there again. Service was ok. Very diner like service really.

I'm a Bleeding Heart girl but wanted to check out this place as it's a few blocks from me. I wasn't super disappointed but I wasn't exactly pleased either. The place will have you drooling when you walk in. Everything looks amazingly yummy and it smells divine. It will be hard to decide what to purchase. I'm into classic's and chose the apple strudel. I was a bit surprised how much it was but didn't bat an eye because this strudel was bound to be scrumptious. This strudel totally fooled me. The price tag must of been some sort of a smoke screen because it wasn't that great. It wasn't exactly bland either but definitely not a $15 strudel!

Really want to love Lutz more but there is something a bit off with the pastries. The service is excellent and the cafe is clean and very charming. You are assaulted with the pastry case as soon as you walk in the door. Time comes to a screeching halt when you start to examine the goodies in the large cases that run into the cafe. Everything in the cases looks to be presented with perfection. Everything is perfect. It looks like a food stylist's crème de la crème but upon eating the pastry- I was left with a bit of disappointment. It just does not have that POP. Don't get me wrong, it was good but the look of the pastry was better. We even tried this crazy German cake doughnut type concoction where they bake it partially and then coat it with more batter repeating this process multiple times and then cooling the cake before immersing it in chocolate. It was good but we were laughingly in shock when we looked at the receipt. It tasted like and Enteman's chocolate cake doughnut. I had the cheese strudel and it was good but it lacked that creamy cheese texture. I appreciated the fresh whipped cream piped on the side. Be advised, you cannot take an order of the strudel to go. The coffee here is exceptional and is so darn hot. It is a wonderful house blend. I will come back when I am in the area but I need to find my perfect pastry match from that awesome looking case.

Fantastic bakery on Chicago's northside. Bring kids, they give freebies. Tea room is an excellent time. The signature whip cream, strawberry, layered cake is brilliant. I also love their fresh fruit pastries.

Free samples. Solid Marzipan Turkeys -- on sale now. Really great coffee and, again, free samples. I picked up a cherry strudel here on Thanksgiving Day after stopping in about 5 or so times in the last couple of months. The folks who work there are genuinely nice and helpful. Even when I was stuffing my face full of tiny, delicious free portions of marbled pound cake. Hey, Visa did the talking for me just fine. I understand they have added free wifi -- and so that could be another draw for me on the way home from work. Okay, that's just and excuse to find a way to try this strawberry cake everyone is raving about. Holiday pounds, here I come!

My mom has been purchasing birthday cakes from Lutz since I was a baby and I hadn't been back in my adult hood until this past weekend. I love this bakery the cookies are great! Although I am a fan of the very sweet alot of the cakes at this bakery do not meet that criteria, but their almond cookies are so amazing! They are nice and very patient as I looked through the glass case trying to decide. Overall pretty good on stuff in my book.

I guess this review might not be as fair as it should, but it is only in comparision to a bakery in Michigan (Graf's) that I'm trying so hard to find a sub for. I ordered a 9 inch strawberry torte cake for my hub's bday extravaganza. It was a light airy confection that is very europa in flavor and texture. If I didn't have a bar that was already set, then Lutz's would've received 5 stars. It is a great place to get pastries. But alas still not a good enough sub for my beloved Graf's in Michigan. On to the next bakery.

I stopped in today with my daughter in tow. She wanted a little after school pick me up laced in sugar and sprinkles and I needed more coffee. Lutz has remodeled nicely, they now carry espresso and the helpful girl behind the counter told me they might even start to carry breakfast again. Right now they have chocolate covered gingerbread cookies. The cookies are soft and chewy not the rock hard gingerbread, they come in all types of shapes like Christmas Tree's and Snowmen, today we got Candy Canes. Everything they make is superb, A nice experience you should know about -last summer my mother left her wallet and purse at Lutz Bakery and didn't realize it until 3-4 hours later. She had credit cards galore, cash and cell phone all inside. A Lutz employee found the purse and held it for her at the register. Not one cent or item missing, my mom offered a reward to the gal that found it and she refused to take it. There are nice people in this world, one works at Lutz Bakery.

All I can ask is what happened? Lutz for at least the last twenty years has been a reliable and consistent standby. About six months ago I came up with a new food plan, "if it has a lot of calories, it has to be very good." I love me a sweet treat. Cookies are a big favorite for me. Lutz's always had real tasty butter cookies. Well "had" is the operative word, these were dry and tasteless. The ones that are supposed to have raspberry filling had been filled barely. There was so little filling that most of them came apart in the box. I also did get two of the little cake slices, these also were very dry. Just a big disappointment. One star for the very friendly and smiling girl behind the counter. I really do wonder, what happened? Did they change ownership, management, something?

I had heard great things about Lutz's Bakery. I stopped in after dinner one night with the in-laws to treat them to dessert. We ordered a few different slices of cake and a roll, took them home, and dug in. Needless to say, we were not impressed. The cake was dry and the flavor was so-so. I don't recommend it.

Lutz has great quiche, very good cookies and excellent breakfast pastries. The desert pastries are a notch down in my experience but still better than say, Dinkel which is like Jewel bakery deluxe, or Cafe Selmarie, who uses no sugar. When the weather is warm, there is a great patio in back. The coffee is good too. I've had a couple of 2.5 star experiences with the pastries, but overall it's nearly always 4-5 stars.

Went there for the first time today using a Groupon. Food was great but service was awfully slow. They said they were short 2 people and I understand that but they had very few customers, so not sure why it was hard to handle. There was plenty of staff around. We ordered quiche and salad. Isn't quiche made ahead of time and just needs to be heated up? Aside from that, they had a lovely garden for dining and it was a step back in time. Very European. Felt like I was on vacation.

    (3)
  • Tasha H.

The poor reviews here shock me - maybe Grouponers have different/strange expectations of their pastries? To me, Lutz's offers European-style pastries, i.e. elaborate, beautifully decorated, absolutely delicious with high-quality ingredients but not sickly sweet like that sold at many bakeries My family has been coming here since I was a tot - actually since before I was born - and now as an adult I live in Roscoe Village so it's a short jaunt here. My family still insists that I bring them pastries when I go see them, and so I do. Everything I've ever had here has been terrific - fresh, yummy, so pretty and elaborate that I don't know how they make so many things and continue to do it so well. My usual go-to pastries are the Napoleans, eclairs, various cake slices - all excellent (I picked some up today). I also got a Danish - tender and sooo yummy - and some cookies. Also great. The service was great too - very patient as I ordered a million different things. All in all, I'd say if you're looking for true European or German style pastries, i.e. those that won't leave you in a diabetic coma from 3 inches of frosting, check out Lutz's. Seriously, this place is awesome.

This longtime bakery and restaurant goes way back for me. My parents used to order my birthday cakes from Lutz, and the strawberry and buttercream cakes were delicious yearly rituals. They also serve continental favorites like apple streudel, various cream cakes topped with delectable fruits, and too many sweets and treats to list here. Although I have never dined here on the regular food, the cafe is supposed to be a good place for a light meal too.

The strawberry whipped cream cake from Lutz is immediately what comes to mind when I think "birthday". This was my family's staple birthday cake for me every year from ages 1 until 20 (when it was decided I was getting too old for cake - who decides this anyways??) When we recently celebrated my mom's birthday my dad pulled out all the stops and picked up food and cake from all her faves around the city. So, to no surprise we had the strawberry cake from Lutz. It was good. And afterwards I sat in guilt for turning my back in this place for so long. The adjoining restaurant/caf was where my mom and I would sneak away and have our girlie lunches growing up. Back then this place was always packed. I think with the new trend of cupcakes and cute bakeries popping up everywhere many (including myself!) have strayed away. But go back and relish in the baked goodness of Lutz. You won't regret it. I probably will no longer ever eat in the restaurant but the cakes (strawberry whipped cream - to be honest not a big fan of any of the others), thumbprint cookies, poppy horns, and croissants are worthy of a detour.

We had an impromptu gathering at Lutz a few weeks ago with the family. It was my first time at Lutz and definitely won't be my last! The owner and his family were at the shop- they were so friendly and really took pride in their bakery. We had brunch and coffee which was to die for! I ordered one of their famous quiches...best one I've ever had! I also tried the crepes, which were absolutely delicious as well! For dessert, the owner brought out some cookies for us, along with a variety of delicious cakes! Very tasty!

I absolutely love the fresh strawberry whipped cream cakes at Lutz. If I could have only 1 type of cake in the world, this would be it! Even during the winter (I just bought one recently for my dad's b-day), they seem to be able to find plump, ripe strawberries to make their amazing cakes! They are kind of pricey, but you definitely get a delicious, quality cake. I just have one complaint though - they charge $1 for writing on the cake! UGH. In the past when I've gotten cakes from here, I never got writing on the cakes, but who the F charges to write on a cake?! And it wasn't even good writing, a 2nd grader could have written "Happy Brithday Dad" a million times better. Ok, I'm done ranting and raving, I will no longer get writing on my cakes here anymore!

I used to live on Montrose and Clark, so this place was never too far away. Now I have to drive past it to pay my rent, and I finally stopped in. The place is super cute, and I didn't want to leave! My husband and I didnt know what anything was, as nothing is labeled, but a girl behind the counter was more than happy to help us. We settled on 2 different slices of cake. One was vanilla cake, and something like bavarian creme between the layers. It also had a phylo layer on the top and bottom. Amazing. Im not kidding. I could eat it every day. $3 a slice wasn't too bad either.

I think every Korean family comes to this place religiously. Growing up, my mother bought me one of their strawberry cream cakes every year for my birthday. Since then I have become a chocoholic, but can still appreciate these yummy little delights. The cream is light and whippy, soft spongy cake that has flavor and just enough sweetness. I think it's a whipped cream frosting rather butter cream. I'm also a big fan of their fruit tarts. LOVE them.

The gf moved in nearby, and I hope that fact doesn't lead me to 500lbs this next year... Very cool little place. It does feel a little dated, like I suddenly stepped into about 1983, but I can only hope the couple pastries I've had so far are a sign of things to come. Very tasty. First purchase was a flourless chocolate cookie. With chocolate ganache in the middle. Half-dipped in chocolate. I just figured we'd split it, which turned out to be the girl behind the counter's advice. And yes, good idea. Very rich. Wicked good though. I think it actually warrants "decadent." Then the almond-filled croissant I got this morning was another delight. Coffee's actually really tasty, too, and while not particularly "cheap," it's not expensive at all. I think my 20-oz was right at $2. They do have beer and wine, too, which was a little surprising. I was also surprised at the amount of seating in there... I especially liked the looks of the big leather chairs in the corner. Actually a nice-looking little outside seating area, too. *After further visits, I have to say: their cakes are not particularly my favorite. They're good, yeah, but not great. Flavor is just sort of... subtle? Subdued? OK, absent. Same with the "cinnamon" rolls. But there are plenty of other pastries and whatnot. For instance, I particularly enjoyed their recent whoopie pies... like pumpkin cookie with cream cheese buttercream frosting in the middle and drizzled with white chocolate!

This is quite possibly the ABSOLUTE MOST AMAZING European cafe and bakery in the entire Chicago area (this may come as shock for all you devoted Swedish Bakery Fans) Lutz's has the most uh-mazing marzipan, all of their pastries are to die for, and i can't say enough about their swiss chocolates (which are handmade). If you're looking for the perfect gift, way to say i love you, or even I'm sorry, then this is the place to go. The even have a very old world European cafe that does full tea and coffee services (hello, what better way to celebrate a special occasion) and you don't even need a reservation!! I can't say enough about this place other than you have to see it to believe it!!

Oh Lutz... You made the birthday cakes from my childhood. I have pictures of myself blowing out candles atop one of your scrumptious cakes. My older brother, too. Not the little guy, though. He doesn't eat cakes. But if he DID, he would eat yours, no doubt. I plan on revisiting you in the near future, I swear. I'm sure your cakes taste just as good as I remember... :)

Lutz, Oh Lutz! Many memories, many delicious experiences. I've been eating your cakes for at least 22 years, and I'm only 37 years old.You have remained consistent with your taste, quality and service so long I never doubted you. I feel I have more than earned my right to complain. My last experience was definetly memorable, I decided to pull over and buy 2 slices of strawberry cream cake and a whole peach and strwberry cake as a gift. It cost me about 4 bucks a piece, the strawberries were sour, the slices were tiny, there was almost no cake dough, and alot ofcream. The girl who wrote the writting on the cake scribbled " Feliz Navidad" on top of it she was snappy. Again , another good business gone bad!

I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop at Lutz to use a $10 Groupon I had with me.. I figure my 2 friends and I would get a few cookies and go on our way. We ended up sitting out in the back patio for an hour sipping fresh brewed Iced Tea and sharing a HUGH piece of strawberry cheesecake. The waitress even brought us 3 plates, not just 3 forks! It was hot on Saturday (6/26/10) and our glasses were refilled more than once. Amazingly, the $10.00 Groupon covered our entire check.! Lutz reminds me of the type of place I would take my elderly aunt to lunch, but I'm also thinking I would like to stop in again this summer when I'm in the neighborhood to enjoy dining on their patio. Such a peaceful environment for an afternoon lunch.

I ordered a couple of cakes for my son's birthday party and while they looked nice, they were a stock design and they didn't have the toys featured in the design in stock so they had to use another set. That wasn't that big of a deal but I just think if they have something that is a standard design with toy kits they should make sure they have what they need to make it. The cake itself was nothing special, nor was the frosting. I didn't care for it myself, but the kids didn't mind and that's what was most important. Pricing is average of a upper level bakery. The really nice thing is that they deliver (for $30 or so) so it's one less thing to worry about on party day. They were also very available to make the cakes with only two weeks notice. I didn't eat at the cafe but it looked super cute and very European.

OMG!I have a friend that moved to Texas and has been ill,she loves Lutz's,so l thought l would send her a treat to cheer her up.I ordered a cake and was told the manager was not in and would get back to me on the shipping charges(dont know if they did but no email for sure)When l checked my bank statement and saw the cake was 34.95 and shipping was$85.00!Yikes,l called to kind of complain and the salesperson, who was very nice, said "yeah the shipping is way more than the cake",l said dont you think you could have given me a heads up on that, and she said that would probally deter people from ordering-you think???What started as a kind gesture has left me feeling stupid.next time I will send flowers,l know they don't make anything on the shipping but they might want to mention how expensive it is to ship.

All time favorite place in Chicago. I just stare into the glass display case that is 25 feet long, the stern yet cute Eastern European counter girls, and just catch myself smiling at all that pastry. God love you, Cafe Lutz. get a napolean, if you can't decide. It should bring you back.

In a city of amazing gastro-progression, the classics often get overlooked or moved to the bottom of the list. I'm guilty of it myself and am happy to report that I finally broke my habit last weekend and stopped in at Lutz - a tried and true Chicago favorite. The friendly staff and the aroma of butter and sugar that warmly greet you are enough reason to pop in. Lutz is quite the operation. The proof is in the beautiful display case of pastries and desserts, reminiscent of being in a cozy pastry shop in Europe. Although everything is irresistible, I had my favorites. Lutz is known for their Baumkuchen cake - and for good reason. This amazing marzipan layered cake is the result of careful "rotisserie-style" baking in 1 of 3 (or something crazy like that) ovens of it's kind in the world. The strawberry whipped cream cake is also top notch. A light and airy yellow sponge cake is layered with even lighter whipped cream and fresh strawberries - going back to basics never tasted so good! Wash everything down with their proprietary roast coffee (served in an adorable silver pot and platter) - some of the best coffee in Chicago. My experience truly attests to why Lutz has stood the test of time.

I have been coming to Lutz over 20 years and you might be wondering why I would only give Lutz three stars. The answer is that I have disappointedly seen the decrease in quality and yearn for the good old days. I am particularly referring to their strawberry shortcake. In its heyday, this was the best cake I have ever had. However, these days Lutz doesn't seem to be holding to their past high standards. Depending on the day, I have gotten really dry cakes. I know they can't get it right all the time and I wouldn't give them a bad rating just for this. The biggest disappointment is that they have noticeably decrease the amount of strawberries in the cake. They used to have abundant amounts of strawberries in their cake and really it was the perfect ratio. Now I see them trying to cut costs. The strawberries on top of their cakes are no longer half of a strawberry. They are cutting one or two slices out for the inner part of the cake that is mixed with the whipped cream and layered between the cake. This mixture is has also less amounts of strawberries that are thinner slices. I would rather have them charge me more and keep to their higher standards than for them to charge me less with an inferior product.

Ten years ago, this would have been an easy five. Then, the cakes were awesome, the onion soup and old world sandwiches were great and pastries were unbelievable. We would get all our marzipan here. Our b-day cakes would all come from here. The cakes are still really good. The pastries are really good. Everything else changed.

Like many other previous posts, Lutz Pastry Shop has been in our family for years. I used to love dining on the patio in the summer when I was a little girl. My favorite cake is the Chocolate Strawberry Mousse. My runner up would have to be the Hazelnut. I haven't dined here in years so I have no comments regarding the dining aspect. But, you can't go wrong with the cakes. Its worth the money.

I used to make the marzipan figurines here, and i really enjyed working here and sampling the new pastry endeavours. There is such interesting history here, and i just wish the current owners would step it up and make the atmosphere feel as expensive as the product. when i go there, i only buy what the head pastry chef has made that day, which is always something different. just ask what Tonya has been working on today.

I went to Lutz this past sat. I got a Tiramisu which was bland and filled with whipped cream. I also got the napolean which was also bland. The filling did not have much flavour and the puff pastry layers were not all that crispy/flaky. Considering the price and the flavour - I cannot recommend this shop.

I should say, I do not have a sweet tooth at all really, but I love me some coffee and quiche. Lutz has good coffee and GREAT quiche. Did I say great? Yeah. It's awesome. Flakey buttery crust, not over cooked, tastes fresh and served hot. Very good. The decor kind of makes me feel like I'm in my great-aunt's living room, but that's comforting in its own way. I love the free wifi, too!

A conventional German bakery which has a dining area. The decor seemed a little bit out of date. Also, I found my cake to be nothing out of the ordinary. Despite this, my cookies were good.

My friends and I hosted a bridal shower at the Lutz and it was wonderful! The staff went all out in making sure our event went off with a hitch, and they even took photos of our group and printed them within an hour so that we could bring home the memory. For $10 a person we received finger sandwiches, tea/coffee, a private table, gift table, customized menus, and glassware for the champagne we brought in. Originally we wanted to sit outside but due to the weather the Lutz called ahead of time to ask if inside was preferred instead. I highly recommended having a bridal shower here! Its affordable, hospital, and even the parking is good. Five stars!!

I am a Lutz-aholic ... my favorite Strawberry whipped cream birthday cakes come from Lutz's! Everything I have tried here is great! I haven't eaten there since their restaurant space and banquet rooms became condos (how could they sell off the wonderful memories I have?!?), but I did call and i found out their garden cafe' is still open, yeah! The tomato bisque soup was da bomb, too!

More like Klutz. I know that's a bad joke but considering how little the staff knew about their products it's completely fair. Most clerks didn't seem to care about working there. When my rude clerk asked for things, no one really seemed to know about anything. Everything from being unclear on what prices were to describing a product to me as something it wasn't. I didn't discover that until I was back on the beaten path which this is not near at all. You'd think that'd make them want to have better customer service skills? The stuff I got wasn't entirely bad and the garden/lounge areas seemed nice. It's just that there are better bakeries in Chicago which are closer to the main drag. Support them instead.

Lutz's Strawberry Cake was the special occasion cake of choice when I was growing up, and it's still my favorite to this very day.

Lutz has the most AMAZING cakes! When I was little, I remember my parents bringing home a Lutz cake as part of a birthday celebration. Most recently, my sister bought her Engagement Party cake from Lutz...and it was quite a hit with everyone! Nothing beats the fresh strawberries and buttercream frosting! ;)

Purchase anything here that is made of/covered with marzapan. You will NOT be sorry. The other stuff...not so super, in my opinion... But the marzapan will change your life :)

Their strawberry cake was *the* birthday cake of my childhood. My mom would order it every year. So yes, there's a soft spot in my heart for Lutz. Their marzipan is delicious, as well. The kids used to fight for who got the marzipan on top of the cake (and the rose!). Lutz has been around since 1948 and still going strong. I'd go back for the strawberry & whipped cream cake, no birthday required :)

Holy guacamole, is this my first five star review?!? Oh Lutz, how you ruin my attempts to cut out sugar and junk from my life. You are my foil. This Chicago institution is abso-freaking-lutely awesome. I have tried pastries, brownies, cakes, and this close to orgasm inducing flourless chocolate double frosted cookie delight. I have not been disappointed by any of their treats, and I intend to return over and over until I have to motor myself there in my little scooter.

My mother went here a lot. My grandmothers (both sides) went here a lot. My great-grandmother (from switzerland) visited this place often as well. I carried on the tradition while I still lived in Chicago. It was my duty to make sure I got a box of poppyseed rolls and brought them down to my grandmother when I'd go visit family in Florida. I also made sure to pick up tasty treats for myself and friends for other times. All of their baked goods are amazing, but since I grew up with them, the poppyseed rolls will always be my favorite, unlike anything else anywhere.

Like everyone else in the place I was holding a Groupon in my hand that expired today, I had wanted to try Lutz' for years after friends raved about it but never got over to it until today. A change in ownership might explain my disappointment but really 4 rather average and small pastries for $20???? There are so many good bakeries that are more reasonably priced, not worth the effort.

Like EV. I have a million birthday memories due to Lutz! if it was a good year my p's would get me a cake from Lutz and I loved to eat the little marzipan sign with my name on it !! :) They also have great pumpkin suqares which is like the spawn of pumpkin pie and angelina Jolie! It is soooo good!

I went out on a spontaneous drive to taste what Chicago Magazine hails as one of the top five bakeries in the Chicago region. I have a serious sweet touch and a Midwestern mom who is a great baker. This place was just seriously "OK." I bought an apple strudel (too much bread crumbs, skimpy on the raisins, and not flakey enough. The red velvet tort was ok, a box mix of sprinkles cupcakes from Williams & Sonoma is better, and my wife had the hazlenut tort which she wasn't impressed w/. The place is nice inside and everything looks great but upon taste it was a bit of a letdown.

There is a bakery in my hometown that is one of the best out there, and I've been looking for a good one around here, too. This one was pretty good, though my search isn't yet over. They have a nice little sitting area, tables and lounge chairs that are comfy and a place where someone can eat by themselves. I had a strawberries and cream type cake that was really good. I like bakeries that sell single slices of cake; the bakery out here in the suburbs sells things like tarts and stuff, but not single cake slices. They also had a lot of cookies, but I don't really like those kind of cookies, so I'm not the best judge of those. They also don't have a lot of beverages; I just had an apple juice.

Very, very expensive! This keeps Lutz from becoming too habit-forming. Their work with marzipan is incredible, probably the best in the city. My husband and I had them do a custom-order marzipan cake topper for us that was very weird (a robot and Wendy from Peter Pan) and they did it perfectly. I recommend that if you want a cake, but can't decide, get the cake slice sampler, it's a little cheaper than a whole cake and you can try all different types of flavors, fillings, and frostings. A big hit for birthday parties! Their coffee cakes are also excellent. The four stars are for pricing, service (sometimes not so great,) and cookies (not as good as Rudy's, Dinkel's, or Swedish.)

  • Rachelle G.

Being a suburbanite transplanted into the city, it seems I missed out on the great cake traditions everybody seems to speak so highly of. I've passed quite a few times and decided to stop by yesterday afternoon to pick up some cookies for a baby shower. To be quite frank, I was a bit disappointed, I've had better cookies from Jewel. They lacked flavor and even my 13 year old sister could find nothing great about them. The women behind the counter wasn't super helpful, just enough service to not appear rude. I will, however, have to return because the cakes behind the counter did look absolutely delish!

I had my wedding cake made here, and it was great! Delicious, just like the samples given to us at our tasting. Toni, and all of the staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly reccomend Lutz for a wedding or any other special occasion!

I've gone here to buy cakes, which were always delicious. I don't frequent this place as much as I would because their prices are ridiciously high compared to other bakeries.

Lutz is right around the corner from the apartment so I was excited. I've been there twice to get a couple of slices of cake. Not at all impressed. I figured I'd give them a second chance but the result was the same. The cake was hard, it did not seem fresh. Expensive, about $7 or so for two slices. I could've prob gotten an apple pie at Jewel w/some vanilla ice cream for that price. They have a large selection to choose from but with my two experiences I am not tempted at all to go back in.

We ordered the mandarin orange whipped cream cake for our wedding cake 33 years ago and come back each year for an "anniversary" cake as well as for our birthday cakes. It's simply scrumptious!

  • Andrea K.

This bakery switched ownership a years ago, so do not judge it on it's long standing history. It used to be good but now...meh. I've had their cake 5 different times at various b-day parties over the last year. Each and every time, the Icing was absolutely flavorless, the cake itself is dry and bland. It seems they skimp on the butter and sugar, which is the whole point of cake. I can think of a dozen other bakeries in Chicago that do it better. Do not waste the money or calories on the unsatisfying cake at Lutz.

I went here to sit down and have breakfast but they said they don't do that anymore. They're going to reopen it later sometime. I really wanted a crepe but they didn't have that for order anymore so I just got a tiramisu to go. It was very light but I've had better tiramisu elsewhere.

I really liked the mini desserts ( RUM BALLS) I got from here, though I haven't tried anything else. I do know that the birthday cakes are pretty pricey. They advertise a weekend breakfast, though I've never tried it. But those rum balls, oh my god, they are really fantastic. I really hope the rest of the products here live up to those balls!

Like another reviewer, I should note that I only have eaten in the back restaurant and have not dealt with it as a bakery. Overall it was OK, but not good enough to ever make me come back. There are way way better places to get a breakfast/brunch, and the decor is very ...I dunno....old lady friendly would be the wording I'd use. It's worth one try, but overall as a dining experience it sorta left us flat. That said, it is a bakery so that's probably more of its focus.

I won't lie, I was hoping for a bit more from Lutz. I have a few more groupons so I'll be back, and I AM glad because I do want to give them another chance. I lived in Germany for 3 years and grew up with a German teacher for a dad. I sooooo want to find a great little Germany café. Though this is a German café I didn't see or hear anyone I would have taken for German. No worries there though, the proof is in the tort. I rolled across town to get a breakfast Danish and coffee with a friend in from out of town. He had the apple and I had the cherry. They were both very good but 10 seconds of warming up would do them wonders for a dining in presentation. The coffee was better than Starbucks but worse than Caribou (my personal favorite). For a cup of coffee at breakfast it was really good but I had hoping it was going to be more European smooth and creamy in mouth-feel and bold in strength. If you've had coffee in Europe you know what I'm spouting about. We took a cheese strudel to go. Honestly, it wasn't good. It wasn't awful it just wasn't good enough for a bakery. The cheese was a bit to thick and dry in consistency and lacked depth and richness while the strudel dough was over cooked on the outside and separated thus flaking away. The Sacher Torte and other cake pastries looked fantastic so I'll give those a whirl the next time I'm back hoping, and crossing my fingers, they are as good as they look. The décor is kind of grandma old-world, it's not fancy but not gaudy. It's just kind of there in a way that makes you wonder if they serve a meal at the tables. They do have a cute little back patio but the furniture is plastic. There were two nice leather chairs around a stone table that I really enjoyed sitting at and chatting with my friend. All-in-all, for now, I'll be back because I have groupons. It's to far across town for me to travel for what I got the other day. If the other pastries turn out better than perhaps I'll remember them more in the future when I need something genuine, don't want to bake it, and don't want to pay Whole Foods prices. Prost, Cheers, Salud, Bon Appetit, and all those great wishes!

I've never eaten at the restaurant, so this review only pertains to the bakery. I have very fond memories of Lutz. As a kid, my mom would order the tangerine cake for my birthday. It had to be tangerine, because oranges in general have been and are my favorite fruit. The cakes here are really good. Not too sweet. We're getting a cake from them for Easter and I am looking forward to it. Maybe we'll get tangerine for old times sake.

I have been going to Lutz for... forever. Their cookies are so addicting... ok, actually the only ones I really LOVE are the hazlenut ones shaped in a heart and dipped in chocolate. My husband, daughter and I can go thru a pound in a sitting, which is really sad not only because it proves that we are pigs, but also because we blew thru $15 worth of cookies so fast. :) Their cakes are very good, but for the hefty price, you'd think they'd throw in a "Happy Birthday" sign for free (they charge extra).

I started ordering birthday cakes from here about 2 years ago. I usually get the strawberry shortcake. The cake itself is very moist and fluffy. The frosting is not too sweet and the best part is, they use real strawberries, not strawberry preserves. They put a lot of strawberries between the layers and on top of the cake. I have learned though to ask them to go easy on the frosting, otherwise you get more frosting than cake. For a small cake that feeds about 8 - 10 people, it's about $35 which isn't bad at all. The slices of cakes are a bit expensive, one slice of the shortcake was about 6 bucks I believe. I have also tried the brownies which were also moist and good. Not too sweet at all. I've also tried slices of other cakes there, but my favorite has to be the strawberry shortcake. I do want to try some breads, but I think you have to get there early or their display case is pretty empty. I've also tried the ham and cheese quiche which I also thought was good. The crust was flakey and it had just the amount of ham and cheese. The people that work behind the counter are also very nice. Parking is pretty easy too which I like.

Hands down a chicago institution. This has to be the best bakery/cafe establishment in the midwest, could quite possibly be the closest you can come to Vienna in the US. Yes it is a little pricey, but you get what you pay for and I grew up coming here and hope to carry that tradition on and bring my kids there if i ever have any. Marzipan creations are excellent, great coffee, and just an all around grand place!

their classic and original strawberry and cream cake has been my favorite since i was 2--my parents started me young! i've had this classic cake from different bakeries but everything pales in comparison. you can never go wrong with this cake at lutz! although i have never tried any other cakes, i hear they're all scrumptious!

Do you like cute food things? Then you will love Lutz. Not only do they have unlimited marzipan animal and fruit figurines to oogle over (check out the marzipan gallery on the website - you'll see what I mean) but they also will put a box of mini pastry together that will make you the hit of your next dinner party. It is everything you would hope from a German bakery with the added enticement of a cafe and a beer garden.

yummy yummy yummy rich icings, thick moist cakes I grew up eating the treats from here. I begged for their dark forest cakes every year for my b-day. The only thing that I am not fond of is the restaurant that is attached to it and the price tags of the cakes. If not for that, it would be a full 5 stars from me.

The other reviews seem a little over the top and so I reserve the right to increase the stars if appropriate as I a) have coffee here every day as it is near the bus stop and Jerri's coffee (see separate review is atrocious) good at 1.80 , gourmet , strong. Crisp delicious thin butter cookies. Cake (tort? slice was underwhelming , but I like the sweet rolls , not COATED in glaze etc . I will be back.

My ex-boyfriend would take me to Lutz on Sundays. We'd pick up 5 or 6 slices of cake (always the marzipan) and then devour them one by one at home on the couch. If there were any leftovers, we'd eat them for breakfast the next day. The cake here is delicious! The shop is old skool and super quaint. Disclaimer: I'm not advocating you make this place a "destination spot." Ex-loser lived on Southport, so the hike wasn't too far. I'm not sure it's worth a special trip, but that's for you to decide. Gluttony at it's finest.

  • Jessica C.

I can't say everything here is my favorite, but i do LOVE LOVE their sugar cookies, and the cakes--my parents ordered me one every year, "Happy Birthday" piped on a small marzipan tablet, set amidst Snow White and her tiny plastic dwarfs--all candled-wish happiness and yummy cream. Good stuff.

  • Thomas S.

A disappointing experience. I used to go there years ago. The food and the service back then were fabulous. It was a special place that I highly recommended. I moved away but went back there recently. It was cute but much smaller than it used to be. The food was okay but quite expensive. The service was HORRIBLE. 2 workers sat behind the counter and kept talking among themselves while I tried to get some help. They were not very welcoming. This place was "it" when I used to go there but these days there are countless bakeries and pastry shops around Chicago that can beat the pants off this place . Save yourself the trip. You'll be sure to find a better spot much closer to home.

  • Gail T.

if it was a several years back.. i would have given the pastry shop 6 stars if i could. correct, the bakery had the best strawberry cake in chicago. right moistness and not too heavy on 110% cholesterol frosting and shortening. however, the quality of the place went a little downhill after new owners took over. word on the street is the german bakery is now owned by a filipino family. they still the right recipes deserts and fancy dishes but there are some kwerky things going on now not making it feel like the good old place it once was. try the escargot in the back (cafe)

I love this place. Their pastries are like crack; only better! Almost as expensive though... If your sweet tooth has a penchant for high-end sweets and your wallet has a few extra bucks in it; stop in and get something. I've only had their pastries; so I can't comment as to how their cafe is.

i grew up eating lutz cake, and i can honestly say that they may very well have the most delicious strawberry cake in the world. not just in chicago.....the world! i believe a small cake will cost you a around $40 or so. it's the melt in your mouth, not too sweet, makes your eyes wide, and your mouth giggle, good.
