Good service and huge portions and above average food.

We had our end of the year celebration here. The margaritas were good but the ceviche was amazing! We were there on a Friday and they had drink specials. Plenty of meter parking on the street. They turned up the music at about 7. Most people just sat at the bar and watched the World Cup on the Large Screens. The waiters were friendly but it never got really packed.

These people are not honest. I had a voucher from restaurant dot com and tried in every way to not honor it. DISREPUTABLE place. Their service was very slow. The food was good but I am very disappointed

Been here a couple of times. Food is mediocre at its best. I regret coming back. Gave this location a second try thinking our first try was during a busy day (Mothers Day), it was dead today & even then still even more disappointing. Took them 10 mins to bring water which we had to order to get. Staff needs customer service training which they obviously lack. No bad attitudes, they are just slow and could do way better. The food is just bad. If you want the true Islas Maria's experience, visit the Cicero and Armitage location. It's a lot smaller but you won't be disappointed.

Question: is this place closed or closing? I love going here and really enjoy the food but the last few times over the last few weeks I have attempted to go it has been closed. But then occasionally it will be open. Super confusing. Anyone know anything

The salsa and ceviche is great. Never had Mexican inspired seafood and the options were plentiful and the food was fantastic. I recommend the shrimp type soup it was awesome

This is the best Islas Maria. It is so pretty inside, so much cultural art. The ceviche is yummy. The salsa's they give you with the tostadas are super spicy, just the way I like it! I ALWAYS get the shrimp empanadas as an appetizer, they are my favorite. I recommend getting the langostinos, which are uh-mazing! I have gotten the Piña Rellena (stuffed pineapple), and the sweetness of the fruit with the saltiness of the seafood is just perfection. Fave drinks: The Margarita Toro (bulldog margarita) which is huge, the cantaritos, and the micheladas, which always compliment seafood!! Islas Maria, is a bit pricey in my opinion, but the seafood is great and worth it. The service is okay, some of the servers I've had are not all that friendly.

I wanted to take my girlfriend out on a romantic date, and she has been craving authentic Mexican seafood. I choose Islas Maria because I thought it would be a sure thing, I was wrong. The place was almost completely empty... on a Saturday night? It still took forever for us to get a waitress to even acknowledge us! We got our order in, got our drinks and just waited. It's one things when the waitresses are busy and the place is packed and it's excusable that we're ignored. But it became almost a running joke. After waiting for a ridiculously long time and asking after our food several times, we finally got our food. My girlfriend got a seafood plate filled with rice; I got fajitas. You can't mess up fajitas, it's literally the easiest bit of Mexican food to cook outside of beans. My fajitas were luke warm at best, and served with no tortillas. Great now I have to wait another eternity just to get tortillas. I end up eating half of the fajitas over 15 mins while I waited for the tortillas. The only thing that saved this place from the dreaded 1-star rating was my girlfriend absolutely loving her food, and one of the bus boys who we tipped instead of the waitress for getting us everything. Bottom Line: Mediocre and overpriced food, absolutely insultingly terrible customer service, and overall I place I'll never be back to.

We discovered this place on accident. We were actually checking out The Owl next door, which wasn't open yet, so we decided to eat here at Las Islas Marias. We were not disappointed! You first walk in and a part of you wants to walk out. It isn't the fanciest place for seafood but it was clean and the waitress was nice! We order Tostadas. I had the mixed which has shrimp, crab, other seafood. IT WAS GOOD! You tend to be hesitant about seafood in certain places, but it was fresh and tasty and I wasn't sick from it, which tends to be a good sign. haha. I'd go back to try other things on the menu, and will probably drag others too.

A clean, low-key spot to enjoy well prepared Mexican food. Seafood is their specialty but I actually had the pechuga de pollo and it was awesome. Very fresh; nice portions. It's Nayarit style seafood so it's like the stuff you can get near Puerto Vallarta. Lots of ceviche, seafood cocktails (the kind with the ketchup), and tons of different shrimp dishes. Before you order a big basked with tostada shells, saltines and selection of hot sauces, along with fish ceviche arrives. I would avoid ordering the fish ceviche as your appetizer because since you get some for free as your starter, and it's kinda bland, you may over-do it with the bigger portion.

The food here is amazing. The ceviche is beyond delicious. The service leaves something to be desired. We never once got a refill on our waters. The server was super friendly but was impossible to find if we needed something. If the food wasn't so good I wouldn't be coming back.

The food was average but way overpriced which I don't mind but the service was horrible, we only saw our waiter three times (drinks, order and check) it took them 40 mins to give us our order then the waiter disappeared, other waitresses helped us but gave us the attitude of being bothered. Also they had music on blast, couldn't have a conversation and I believe if you have a restaurant you can pay the 5 bucks Pandora charges to have commercial free music. Bad experience, won't be back.

Pro's: Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. Red Snapper was fried and salted to perfection however-----------read on Con's: Ordered fried Garlic Red snapper. They don't use fresh garlic, they splattered garlic that comes pre-diced in jars. They were half way there with the fish why not go the extra mile and actually offer a good quality fresh ingredient for the Garlic. Precut jarred garlic is way to pungent to just throw on a fish raw like that. The veggies are from a frozen variety not fresh. Such a disappointment from such an acclaimed restaurant. I'll only return when they start putting an effort in their cooking choices. Until then I'll stick to my El Barco red snapper. The shrimp empanadas were nothing to rave about either. It appeared and tasted as if they were re-fried. The dough wasn't even pleasant to bite into which you'll find with Colombian empanadas. I won't rush back, there are many other choices in Chicago. REMEMBER LAS ISLAS, FIRST IMPRESSION IS EVERYTHING.

The food here is absolutely fantastico! We've ordered the combo plate that has everything, shrimp, fish, scallops, oysters, crab legs etc, that comes in this spicy marinade. It's ENORMOUS. The prices are very low compared to the portion size. Their drinks are also jumbo size. Everybody we've ever taken here has absolutely loved it. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is the service is VERY slowwwwwww.

How is it that this hidden gem only have 8 reviews??? Oh man I have been taking all my friends here for the best Mexican seafood in the city. My favorite dish is the Langostino (fresh water prawns)

Mariscos. One word. That is it. It is all you need to know. It's like a secret password that you will always remember. And your first passport to heaven. Because that is what you get with a meal here. The decor is cheesy. Don't let it fool you. I think they decorated it that way to keep out the rif raf. AKA the hipsters who think that every restaurant has to have a 'cool' ambiance to have really great food. Like the atmosphere would make up for a crappy meal? Never. Anyways.....it looks like a Cancun Sandals resort restaurant threw up in here. Don't pay it any mind it. Keep moving. You won't even remember what the place looks like after your entree arrives..... Immediately they bring out ceviche with fresh tortillas. Also included is green and red salsa. Slammmin'. Yep, we are on our way. Let's order the entrees. Snapper. Full body. Head on. Crispy and salty and fresh. Super fresh. Definitely not frozen. Served with rice and veggies and beans. Around 17 bucks. Seriously? My divine dish was a gigantic dish called pasta marinara? Not really sure about the name but here's the deal: the best fettucine I have ever had in my life. The sauce was perfectly balanced for the seafood mix which included about 20 fresh shrimp, fresh mussels, octopus, and something other seafood I cannot remember. The bowl was big enough for 3 meals. Believe you me I took it all home with me and almost licked the bowl it came in. 3 meals for 15 bucks? Amazing. The prices are ridiculous for the portion sizes. Super cheap. But what is even more ridiculous is that the taste is so serious. And by serious I mean, clean, well-thought out, wonderful and worth every penny. If you have a large group needing to go somewhere in the neighborhood that isn't super trendy and packed, this is the place. it is cavernous.

If your craving authentic Mexican style seafood, this is definitely the place to go! My husband and I have visited this location on numerous occasions and every visit has been favorable. Our server Lupe was very attentive and had some very good recommendations. The crab legs are delicious and the shrimp empanadas are the best I've ever tasted!

It looks the same as it did before but the food is completely different. We had the shrimp empanadas to start which were good but not great. The margaritas were better than average. I ordered the shrimp las Islas Maria's peeled and there were so many shrimp on the plate I ended up taking home more than a pound of shrimp. The sauce was spicy but had flavor. The wife had the shrimp in garlic butter which was also good. We finished with a slice of tres leches cake which was gone before the waitress even finished taking an order right next to us. Yes it was that good. The only issue I had was the live mariachi band that was so loud I couldn't hear the NCAA games nor could I hear the wife talk. We will be back.

The portions were huge. The fish was fresh and very good. One thing to note is that they are located right next door to a nightclub, so the boom boom boom diffuses into the restaurant, although it is not a huge deal.

what is this? del boca vista retirement village on seafood luau night? id rather do the hokey pokey and turn myself around to congress pizza next door, or just eat cat vomit because it passes for better seafood. i felt like a nordic axeman who had just arrived in his viking ship onto some paradisiacal shore filled with island beauties and artificially aged treasures while allured by neon green salsa only to be poisoned by the natives and sent back in a toxic stupor into the cold, dead sea (Milwaukee ave.) but no one cares if you yack in the many open bathroom stalls! expect; prolonged chewing, excessive useless crackers, vibrant (though deceptive) menu imagery and plenty of head space. must try the imitation crab product!

I was in the mood for Mexican seafood, especially langoustines. We didn't want to drive all the way to Mariscos el veneno and decided to check out this place. Bad idea. It's not too far from our house and my husband had heard that this place wS really good from co-workers at his old job. I ordered the langoustines and the hubs got the shrimp, After bringing the food home, I anxiously took my first bite and tasted salt. They were all seasoned with too much salt! So disappointing! The portion was a lot smaller and the flavor was off. The price was high for the portion and overall quality, From now on, when I get these cravings, I will just go to the best.

  • Tony C.

The seafood was overcooked and just off..the service was quite strange and slow. Portions are big so if you are just looking for a lot of food then this is your spot, if you want it to taste good then try elsewhere.

Fresh Mexican seafood in a cute, authentic, atmosphere! Now I love me some slightly shady, authentic Mexican food and this place delivers. It's times like this when you really appreciate living in a city and all the wonderful things that it offers. I went with some friends and I have to say my new "good neighborhood food" signal of two Chicago Police Officers also chowing down was true yet again. We ordered the large fish ceviche which was delish (excuse the Rachel Rayness of that), the fish was so fresh and the lime was so good plus it was one of those dishes that made you love cilantro. My friend and I both got one of the shrimp dishes, I had shrimp in garlic which was fantastic. My other friend had the whole fish (number 13) which was also fantastic. Oh and how could I forget! There was a very nice mariachi band that played while we were there. Anyways, if you are looking for good Mexican seafood and expanding your horizons go to Las Islas Marias!

A few nights ago, a friend and I were in the neighborhood looking for a place to get a quick bite before heading to a bar. Having passed quite a few questionable and mostly empty places already, we were delighted when we came to Las Islas Marias because it was nearly full and bustling. Jackpot! Or so we thought. We walked in and I smiled at a waitress nearby, but we weren't sure if we should wait for someone to seat us or go straight to the empty table near the back. The other waitress ended up seeing us and cleared off the table for us, so we sat down. But 10 or so minutes later, that table clearing was still the sum total of the attention given us by the staff. My friend ended up getting someone's attention and the waitress wordlessly handed us two menus. Having a bit of Spanish between the two of us, we were able to translate some, but not nearly all, of the menu on our own. Of course I can't fault the restaurant for having a menu in Spanish, but a little help might have been nice. Instead, we were ignored and made to feel unwelcome. I felt like we were seated at the invisible table. We sat there for a very long time, and were never given water or chips and salsa, and nobody came by to take our orders or see if we needed any help. Didn't even look in our direction. They didn't seem to want us there, and when we our growling tummies realized they were not going to be fed here, we eventually obliged.

If you've been dreaming of dining on fresh shrimp at a sea-side Mexican resort but you can't travel at the moment I suggest a trip to Las Islas Marias for authentic Mexican food from the Pacific coast state of Nayarit. Las Islas Marias features a number of shrimp (camarones) dishes including shrimp cocktail, shrimp tostadas, 'Camarones a la Diabla,' (shrimp cooked in hot sauce), and 'Caldo de Camaron,' a shrimp soup that will zap a Chicago winter chill in a flash! The decor is sparse but between the friendly staff, lots of locals, a full bar, and a juke box jammed with classics and current Mexican hits, it won't be long before you're in the mood for a hammock and a siesta. Hours: Monday - Thursday 10A - 9P Friday and Saturday 10A - 11:30P Sunday 10A - 7:30P All major credit cards accepted.

I've always driven past this Mexican seafood restaurant and noticed that it had a good amount of people in it, especially on the weekends. I'm not going to lie; but it always scared me since it had a certain shadiness to it. It sits next to a cheap hotel that looks like it charges by the hour, and a discoteca that looks like guys in cowboy hats are doing coke off of the toilet seats. My uncle suggested getting some caldo (soup) here after a painting gig....and man did it hit the spot. The place is much nicer looking on the inside....not dirty....not super fancy. A juke box was playing some Mexican music. The menu was entirely seafood. Not one meat dish available. We had some nice cold Mexican beer, and our server gave us a basket full of tostadas and some green salsa. We broke off some pieces of tostada and dipped it in the green salsa. It was a bit too limey (no offense Brits) for my liking. There are a number of bottled hot sauces on the table to dab on the tostadas. Our waitress then brought out a complimentary appetizer of ceviche. It had finely cut onions, carrots, and cilantro which was very tasty. My uncle ordered a large bowl of siete mares (7 seas soup) (fish, crab legs, oysters, shrimp, mussels, and octopus). My uncle said that his dish was definitely better than his dish he had at El Barco. I ordered the caldo de camarones (shrimp soup). The waitress gave me the option with shell or not. I ordered it with shells, knowing it would have more flavor. I wasn't expecting it to come with the heads on..which was a plus since the best flavor comes from sucking the inside of the head. Oh, they give you a good ten medium sized shrimp, which made my uncle jealous. I would have preferred my soup to have a bit more kick, but I was able to add some hot sauce to get the desired flavor. All in all, it was a good dining experience. Not the greatest, but not bad.

This review is for drinks and service only as both were so terrible that staying for the food was not an option. We, a party of four, went in on a Wednesday night. We arrived around 7:30pm and walked into a completely empty restaurant. There wasn't an employee in sight so we had to walk around till we found someone to seat us. The server that took us to our table did not return for 15 minutes. We ordered one soda, one margarita, one mojito, and a piña colada. We did not see our server for another 15 minutes. My girlfriend went to go and find her so that we could place our food order as we were under a time constraint. She did not find our server but she did find a manager who was sitting in a booth on her cell phone. The manager told her to wait until she finished what she was doing on her phone before she asked her what she needed. A few minutes later and our server showed up and took our food order; still no drinks. Another 15 minutes passes and she shows up with 3 of our four drinks and one of them is wrong. When I pointed out to her that I ordered a mojito and not a margarita she told me mojitos weren't on the menu anymore so I just kept the margarita. I tried to take a drink and something at the bottom was so viscous that it wouldn't pass through a straw (disgusting). I asked the server for a beer instead and reminded her that we were still missing a drink. Suddenly a bartender arrives with another margarita to tell me she re-made the original and essentially refused to take it away. At this point, the piña colada finally arrives and is not fully blended or even drinkable (it was also tinted by whatever was left over in the blender that was made before it). At this point we asked to speak to a manager who talked over us instead of listening to us. This was also the point at which we decided to call it quits and leave. Worst of all, a table was seated near us and got their drinks and food before we got the fourth drink we ordered almost an hour after walking in the door. As a person who has worked in the service industry for almost 10 years and understands the various dimensions of the job, I was appalled. I have no idea how this place manages to stay open or pay their rent in a city like Chicago where hospitality is everything. As another review previously stated, it must only be the desperate and intoxicated who keep this place afloat. Save your money and time and go somewhere that will care about your patronage.

Honestly, I'd give them zero stars if that was an option. At each turn our experience just got worst and worst. I went there for Mother's day with my girlfriend and her family and have never had a more terrible restaurant experience in my life. 1. We were taken to our table fairly quickly (only about 10-15 minutes, which is more than fair. It was mother's day evening with no reservation) but the table was filthy. Before we could ask the Hostess to get someone to clean the booth she disappeared. 2. The server finally shows up about 5 minutes later and asks why we're still standing up. We then told her the booth was still dirty from the party before us and requested that she get someone to clean it. She left and a few minutes later she came back and cleaned the booth and everything was fine fore the moment. 3. After cleaning the booth the server disappeared for another 15 minutes without so much as bringing us water. When she finally returned she asked if we wanted anything to drink and almost disappeared again before we could place our order. It's almost as if she didn't want us ordering food. 4. While waiting for our water/food we were watching playoff hockey on the TV nearest our table. There is a row of TVs on each wall and one wall had the hockey game while the other had the basketball game on. Anyways, while we were watching the game the manager changed the channel on the TV we were watching so that both TVs were now playing the same basketball game. We asked him to change the TV back because we were watching it and there was no reason why both the basketball game and the hockey game couldn't be viewed. We had a short conversation with him about the matter and then he walked away and decided not to change the channel. I thought that was kind of an asshole move but maybe I'm wrong. I didn't think it was too much to ask, considering that they could have watched basketball on one set of TVs and Hockey on the other set of TVs and we all would have been happy. 5. It took about 45 minutes from the time we ordered the food until the time the first plate came out. That's totally reasonable especially considering that it was Mother's day. The problem was that within those 45 minutes the server didn't once come to check and see if we wanted any water or anything. Maybe I'm spoiled but I usually don't have to ask for refills on water. Another thing that kind of bugged us was that the menus were still in the middle of our table. There were 7 of us at the table so it was a little cramped to begin with without having to maneuver around the menus that the server had left behind. Fine, maybe she left those there just in case we wanted to order something else. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. 6. Finally our first plate comes out of the kitchen. It was something with steak and onions. It was a little overpriced but that I can live with. The problem was that the server didn't bring out any silverware with it and then disappeared for another 15 minutes. So my friend has a decision to make: either being eating this (overpriced) meal with his hands, or sit around watching his food get cold while he waited for the server came back to give him silverware. Obviously this guy attacked his steak with his hands like a bear hunting salmon. 7. Remember how I said that was how our first plate came out? Yeah I mentioned that because they gave us our plates one by one. Between the first plate coming out of the kitchen and the last plate coming out of the kitchen there was about a 40 minute gap. Every individual on the table had to request silverware. It's like she just expected everyone to dig in with their hands. 8. I was the last to get my food and wasn't in a very good mood either by the time I got my food. When the server came back with my silverware about 8 minutes after dropping off my plate I was pretty upset (maybe even unreasonably so) to find out that my food was cold. Not only was the Tilapia Relleno I ordered cold, but I was even more appalled when I figured out that the vegetables that came as the side were frozen and microwaved. I know, I know, I've rolled my eyes when I've seen Gordon Ramsey bite into food on TV and flip out because he could magically tell that the food was frozen or microwaved. But I finally understood. When you bite into the vegetables and half of them are still frozen while the other half are a little hot it's a sure sign that your food came out of a microwave. I wasn't too happy to find out that I was paying almost $20 to have someone throw a bag of frozen vegetables in the microwave. EDIT: So yelp doesn't allow for enough characters for me to finish telling my story. I think that's the point though, this place was so bad that I can't even adequately describe how poor the experience was on yelp.

Just not feeling it for this place. Its Thursday July 3 and every restraint in town is packed...except this one. Ugh. Service was slow food was uninspired. Veggie sides were all cooked from frozen. Seafood was below average and lacking any authentic flavor. Sad, given that's all they do. Margaritas were from a mix for sure. And not a good one. The place has to have a interesting story as its huge, and in good location, yet empty on prime night AND keeps the doors open somehow. We won't go back and you can do so much better.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
