I'm quite biased, as this is my own personal "Cheers." At first glance it really isn't anything "special," but the regulars know what makes it so great. Namely, the bartenders, Ollie and Tugba, who are both wonderful and will engage regulars in pretty in-depth conversations when possible. The music is usually good, especially if Tugba is in charge of it (there is also a juke box). There is pool, darts, and sports on the tv's (usually soccer). The kitchen is open late, until an hour before close, and the food is way above average for bar food. This is a Turkish-owned business and the menu has hints of that. The sandwiches and fried appetizers are all standard, so you're better off going with the hummous, lentil soup, spinach with orzo and yogurt, eggplant salad, fava bean salad, and the pide, which are boat-shaped Turkish pizzas consisting of crust, topping (spinach, parsley, etc.), feta cheese, and an egg baked on top. Seriously delicious and very filling. Their pizza is also good, especially the the eggplant/jalapeno/garlic special. The food used to be the cheapest in the entire city, but they raised the price last year. However, they also expanded their beer selection at the same time, which makes up for it. They have a decent selection now, including Turkish beers as well as Turkish whiskeys. Konak has always been an actor hang out and there is still the "wall of fame" which mostly consists of really old black and white headshots from the 90's. Another huge plus: With the occasional exception, it's usually very easy to get a seat here. It tends to be surprisingly empty and that suits me fine, though once in awhile it is inexplicably mobbed after an Andersonville event (i.e. lesbian volleyball tournament).

Went to this bar last night during midsommarfest to grab a bite to eat. Had been here in the past and I remember it being pretty good; however, my experience last night was lesson in patience and disappointment. When we arrived the bar was pretty empty which was surprising for a beautiful Friday night in the summer with a festival going on a few blocks north. Maybe should have taken it as warning sign, but we were hungry. Our server seemed to be the only in the place, he explained it was his firsts day after he did not know what beers they had on draft or anything about their menu. Ordered a couple of appetizers and my girlfriend ordered a sandwhich- Steak Arturo. It took forever for the food to come out- forever for the beers too. When the appetizers finally came out after nearly 20 minutes or so- these were nachos and mozzarella sticks things that should ideally take 10 minutes at most- the nachos were plate of tortilla chips with some slices of cheese melted a couple of black olives and jalapenos on it. No salsa, no chili, not lettuce, no nothing. These nachos were what you call nachos that you make at home in the microwave when you're drunk and there's nothing else to eat. Not nachos that cost 8.50. I did not have any mozzarella stick as my friend scarfed all of them down but he did not seem impressed. My girlfriend's sandwich was not a sandwich. It was basically a Philly cheese steak meat on plate with some bread sticks. It came with fries which were pretty good, and a salad, but the whole thing cost 12 bucks. Maybe we got the wrong things. Maybe they were having an off night, but we ended up spending nearly two hours there and it was extremely disappointing. Probably never coming back.

Eh. Went here with a friend and pretty unimpressed. There were about 3 other people in there on a Wednesday night. I found it quite odd that on a street full of bars there was so little activity there. Well... I found out why. The food was absolutely terrible! None of us had pizza, so I guess we should have went for that since they are a "pizza and grill". My salad seemed like it had been frozen. The app sampler my friend got was awful! It looked like someone went out to the frozen aisle of a cvs to purchase these appetizers. The drinks were fine but nothing to rave about or want to return for. The bartender was really sweet after he realized we were sticking around but all in all there is nothing about this bar that makes me ever want to go back. Sorry!

I like Konak for what it is - a no-frills, never-crowded, laid-back bar with A-OK food. Get the veggie pizza: i's probably the best item on the menu (sampler platters previously, erm, sampled couldn't hide the fact that they waltzed right outta the freezer into the oven and onto our plate.) The 'za has a nice homemade crust with lots of greens and a good amount of sauce. Drink specials are decent - usually they have a $3 beer. And although their overall beer selection won't require you to spend hours pouring over a menu with 100 brews, it is sufficient. Service always comes with a smile - and once you get to know the folks behind the bar, they'll sometimes sling an on-the-house shot your way. The pool table is pristine, darts are always open for play and the lounge area is strange (fish tank, couches) but has character. If you're looking for a place that's part dive, part chill, part sport and part easy as Sunday morning - stroll into Konak.

If I had written this review on my first visit, I would have rated it much higher. However, I've picked up many pizzas for the last couple of months and now say it's decent pizza for a pretty good price. I can't vouch for anything else on the menu except for their pizzas. I like not paying much for a no non-sense pie that just needs to not suck. They do this good and as I said before cheap. Although, lately they have been taking forever to have it ready when I go to pick it up but I'm hoping that is just temporary.

I've been to Konak several times. It's my go-to place when I just can't decide what I want to eat and drink. Every time I've been, the staff is just strange. They seem to stare a lot and speak to you as if you're crazy. I just always feel slightly uncomfortable whenever I walk in. The food is good and affordable. The last time I had the pizza, though, it was so hot my tongue and lower lip were burned for a few days because the cheese does not stay on. A bit messy, but the taste is good. Not a fantastic beer selection either. Honestly, Konak is good for a quick bite, maybe a little drink with friends, some pool, and then on to the next place.

If you're drunk and hungry, then I'm sure the pizza is delicious. Otherwise it was very average at best. I had heard good things about the pizza, but I don't agree. There are lots of other/better options, so I would skip it. I'm only rating the pizza, though, so maybe there are other fantastic things here!

"I used to Love her,.....but I had to kill her" is a Guns`n`Roses lyric. For me, Konak`s house special number 1 used to be cool`n`awesome, but I have to kill my desire for it. I told everyone about how great it was, and why they should order it. All of my friends in the arts ( yes, I have some, dont tell anyone) like the place cause its cheap, and they are broke. All my downtown corporate douche friends like it cause its "under the radar", its cheap, and they are stingy. I also like Efes beer a lot too. But, Konak`s pissed me off. Ive been ordering from them for 5 years. FIVE YEARS. I live off of Wilson AVe, they are at Foster. I called this Monday to order a tasty House Special Number 1 pizza to watch Monday Night Football with. But when I called, I was told that they "dont deliver Wilson". I . WAS. LIVID. Apparently they made a "delivery service change" that makes it PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for them to go south of Lawrence, not even for a long time customer. While I guess its important to stick to your guns in the service business, they lost a customer that day. But Apart Pizza gained one.....

stick to the pizza and you will be fine. Start straying away to the other food items and you are on your own. Not that they were bad, but its not that they were good. Plus given the other dining options on the block I am just thinking you might be disappointed.

"Please don't let there be ten, please don't let there be ten..." The thought kept flashing through my head. We had read (well everyone else had) Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" for the Yelp Summer Book Club. I had a copy from high school before PC was entirely in vogue so I read "Ten Little Indians." I hope I'm not giving away too much to say the first character to die in the book was poisoned. I won't go so far as to say I worried about this fate with the food at Konak, but I also won't say I wasn't glad when more than ten people showed up. To avoid legal action, picture the characters in this review going to the bathroom to, you know, or just leaving and not going to the morgue. "Ten book club Yelpers, doing just fine...one ate the pizza, and then there were nine..." Konak trumpets that they are the home of vegetarian pizza. While I give them credit for that, I also put quotation marks around "pizza." The term weaksauce has almost become passe but I'm going to use it because that's what was on the pizza. Konak has found a way to actually bottle the concept. I wasn't even sure I had eaten a slice or two of David R.'s purchase when I was done. They claim the pizza is made fresh daily but I'd rather have had microwaved pie with some flavor. "Nine book club Yelper, wondering who's late...one ate the nachos, and then there were eight." The menu at Konak claims they use melted cheese on their bar nachos. I'm not sure what they melt but I'm guessing a block of velveeta from my order. The neon cheese covers a mixture of chips and jalepenos so vile, one couldn't help but thinking they were at a baseball game. But paid more. "Eight little Yelpers thinking they've been devlined...one checked the beer menu, and then there were seven..." The beer menu is probably the best part of the bar and the only reason it gets a second star. They stock multiple ciders (including Cider Jack and a splendid off-menu raspberry one) but their beer leaves a bit to be desired. I don't know why they bother with putting cute little flags on their menu when most of them are moderately priced American brews. "Seven Yelp readers, plans to come back nixed...one didn't like the service, and then there were six." The most comfortable seats in the house, a set of couches in the back, are a no-eating area. The music was loud and the staff claimed there was no way to turn it down. Food took forever to be served. If this place didn't steal prime real estate on Clark, I'd be amazed if it didn't shut down. But I made it out in one piece. "One little Yelper glad to have survived. Next time people go here, it will still be far less than a five."

UPDATE: I think I will give Konak one more star. Was back this weekend for late night pizza (how do you not remember you didn't eat dinner until 12:30am?) Extra large pizza and beer for 4 people for 25 bucks AND the pizza was much more delicious than I remember. Considering no place in Andersonville has late night food, this definitely counts for something. This is my go-to place in the neighborhood when I get really sudden pizza urges. Honestly, it's not that much different than a really good frozen pizza, but it's closer than Jewel, consistent, and cheap for the amount of food you get. Bar is usually empty and my friends swear by the cheese fries.

I have been to Konak's many times in the past and always had a positive experience, however, yesterday was a DISASTER!!! The service was not fantastic, the kitchen was really slow, and the food was really not the best. The real kicker was the ROACHES!!! Yes...ROACHES!!! After we finished our meal and were just sitting around drinking I noticed a massive cockroach climbing the wall. I calmly let our server know that there was a roach on the wall. She simply said, "Well I am not touching that." No apology, no attempt to fix the situation, just a blatant exclamation that she was refusing to deal with the situation. So I politely asked her if she could find someone who would deal with it. After rolling her eyes she obliged. The bartender then came out with a broom and dustpan to catch the roach. He had a difficult time with it but eventually he succeeded. Over the course of the next hour there were 3 other roaches that were spotted. Each time we tried to get our server to take care of it and she proceeded to get more and more annoyed with us. It was almost as if she just expected us to deal with it or accept the fact that they were there. That made me question what the kitchen looks like if she was in no rush to take care of the ever present cockroach problem in the dining area. After seeing the first roach we should have just asked for our check and left. However, after seeing the 3 other roaches I will NOT be back. Even though the pizza is decent and the prices are great, that is not enough for me to deal with their obvious pest problem. Best of luck to you if you are planning on eating and drinking at Konak's....

  • David R.

Sorry, Konak. You just kept disappointing. First it was the "No eating" signs in your back lounge area. Then you turned on some loud music and pretended that you couldn't change the volume. When I ordered a pizza, it took you two minutes to ring up; if I'd known that you were going to walk across the room out of earshot, I would have ordered my beer in the same breath. That added another two minutes to the process. Your draft beer selection is lackluster. Worst of all, your pizza sucks. The vegetables tasted fresh, but the crust, sauce, and cheese are all a big fat NYET. This stuff was so bland and barely a step above the worst freezer pizza. You have a pool table and since you're never full, I suppose that you serve a meager purpose as a desperation Hopleaf overflow.

Once upon a time, there was a prince who loved pizza but his princess lived in Andersonville so they ended up ordering from select few places and life was good. ... Until one day he asked her to go to a journey to a place she has never been before. She said yes but laid down her rules, one of which was she'd not eat anything from that unknown world. Prince said "fine!" and ordered himself a nice, large pizza. Little did he know, princess also was hungry but due to her selective nature, she didn't want to have anything from the new world. Until she saw the prince eating and having virtual orgasms while enjoying the pizza. Princess said "May I have a bite of your pizza?" and like a gentleman as he always, prince replied "Sure bitch, just don't be eating all of my shit". She had a bite and she fell inlove with it. And that's how the prince and princess broke up because pizza was so good and none of them wanted to share. True story. I swear.

pizza was average, a bit better than apart over on broadway and brwyn mawr. service was pretty bad, place was empty on sunday afternoon and took 20 min for the food. i did like that it was pretty quiet in there. hodgepodge of decor, and their TVs suck. they have some decent TV sets but either they don't pay for HD service or they don't know how to get their TVs to broadcast in HD. they should pay the $10 a month to get HD service or figure out how to get it working on their TVs. then, to get the bill, even though it was empty, still took awhile to get the guys attention, and then he set the bill on the bar, even though we were sitting at a table. hey you lazy f***, how about you bring the bill over to me at our table since we are paying for your food and service and supporting you mom and pop business? that's what i though but i didn't say it. needless to say we probably won't be back.

Konak....the bar that unless you press your nose up against the glass at night, you'd never be able to tell what the place was really like inside. I've always thought it was a pizza joint, when in fact folks have told me it really isn't. It isn't a dive bar, though some folks call it one. Call it Hopleaf's poor cousin, but in a good way. The type of cousin that welcomes you any day of the week and has enough room for you and your friends and also is gentle with you, particularly your pocketbook. Though I've not eaten here, alcohol is another matter and prices are affordable with specials usually going on. There is a pool table and darts along with a nice little jukebox. My roommate indicated not a good first date place, but honestly, I'd take a first date there just to see the reaction....a negative one....kick him/her to the curb because Konak is a great little place that doesn't make itself into something it isn't. It is just a great little bar & place to enjoy your evening in the AV.

Must add to my review to say, who knew they had such a delicious latenight burger here? Combine that with $3 Sam Adams, me, Kellie K., and Angela C. and you have a fun night out in Andersonville. Oh, add the charming and pulchritudinous staff here at Konak, of course!

We came here after a drink at Hopleaf (which is see is kind of a pattern among reviews). The bartender was nice and attentive. The beer selection is minimal, but they did have Goose Island on tap. The pizza was excellent. We got the super veggie pizza and we ate the whole thing. I never knew I would love broccoli on pizza. They had a few tvs on and a few tables filled, but all in all a pretty quiet, laid back bar. I would recommend if you are looking for a quiet place to chat.

Chances are, I'm trying to avoid anyone going to or coming from the Hopleaf, since they usually only choose to muck up Clark St. from Thursday to Saturday night with beery wisdom and hilarious staggering. If I venture out into my neighborhood to enjoy a beverage on a Saturday night (which I rarely do, since every funking bar on Clark from Foster to Bryn Mawr is considered to exist solely to suck up the spillover from Hopleaf), it's to Konak or a place a lot like it. I'm not going to go into great detail about what I love about it for obvious reasons. It would get five stars if I could turn my head 15 degrees and not face a plasma screen television. Or three.

Our first time in Konak was our first week in the neighborhood. It was very hot outside and we did not have AC so off we were in search of a bar with food and AC. After our first experience of the week which was Stargaze(quit laughing) we were looking for some what of a less hostile crowd. We came across Konak and ventured in to have the famous Chicken Chops. The place was clean, the people were nice, the AC was on and the Chicken Chops were excellent. As with us, the Konak has made some changes over the years. The owner is very nice and even though we were never regulars and even less regular now he always has a pleasant hello and inquires of our where abouts. If you are looking for a good low key place where you can actually talk with someone then give Konak a try. Only negative is that there can be carry over from Hop Leaf next door but that is a whole different review.

I thought this place was above average. I walked in on a Sunday afternoon and of course there were no drinkers at the bar. I took a look at the menu and it looked promising. I had take out to go. The chicken chops were quite good. It was a chicken thigh/leg that was cut up to look like a pork chop. The seasoning was very tastey with... is that a hint of cumin? We also had the bbq beef sandwich on a roll. I liked the texture and the bbq flavor. It was sweet and salty and a little nutty which was a bit surprising. The bartender was nice to me while I waited for the food to come out. She even changed the channel to something we both seemed to enjoy on a show of these people who bought junk and made it worth something. I believe that was either TLC or Discovery Channel. All the other televisions stayed on sports except the one right in front of me. Food came out in 15 minutes as the bartender promised.

We had drinks at Konak and that's all I have had here. This is one of the "overflow" bars to head to if Hopleaf is ultra-crowded (and usually it is). The TV was showing some international soccer matches, which is a plus for me. I hear the pizza is not bad, so perhaps I'll give it a try next time.

  • Chris J.

I was definitely not impressed. Our server had some real attitude despite it not even being crowded/busy. Probably because we had 8 people but the group was quite civil and not getting wasted. As for the food, I got the chicken chops, which were pretty decent, but certainly not the most interesting/inspired thing you could put in a pita. The chicken was also overcooked, which another person at the table who got it confirmed. Uh and our server didn't mention they had anything on tap, but even so, given the diviness of the place, the prices were a bit high and the items in bottles and on tap were all pretty much the generic beers you can find everywhere. Being next to Hopleaf you might hope it'd rub off on them and they'd have a more interesting "micro"brew than Honkers Ale.

Konak has a sweet pool table, excellent hummus, some tasty pizza, and about a dozen other awesome items on the menu. When my friends order they order a lot, so I've had a decent amount of dishes here. I like Konak, my friends and I will certainly be back time and time again.

For years, friends and I have nibbled at thin, crispy Konak pizzas at the Neo Futurists' sold out performances of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. After the Halloween show (not sold out so no pizza!) we meandered around the corner to Hopleaf for a bite. Finding the trendy Belgian joint a little too crowded for our liking, we walked next door to the totally quiet Konak. Sitting down at a table in the back near the pool table, my friend and I waited patiently for service. And waited. And waited. Finally, "Would you like a drink?" We ordered water and sodas, it being late on a work night 'n all. It took ten minutes for our drinks to appear and another fifteen for someone to swing by and bother to take our food order. By this point, even with the hellish overcrowding, I could have been enjoying moules frites next door. My dining partner and I each ordered burgers (we'll try the chicken chops next time-- promise!) and both were outstanding. Cooked on a flattop to medium/medium-well, hers was a classic cheeseburger on a soft, sesame bun while I was presented an amazing, bunless Konak-style burger. Topped with at least a 1/3 of a pound of sauteed mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and some melted mozzarella, my plate easily weighed out at well over 2/3 of a pound. It was served with really crispy, thicker-cut fries and a nice salad with a peppery vinaigrette. Getting the bill at the end of the night was filled with trails and tribulations too, needless to say. My friend and I felt a little snubbed-- although we didn't order drinks, we easily spent more than one would've on two pitchers of beer with our food orders alone. So, Konak, I want to love you... but get your service issues straightened out. In the mean time, if I want a burger, I'll head down the street to Hamburger Mary's.

It is quite easy to find seating and with its added tv's it makes it a good place to catch a game. It is crazy how many tv's they put in this place for such a small area. The workers are nice and friendly. You could always grab a game of pool with friends or a pick up for fun. The hummus is good here, that is one thing i always get when i go. OK Ok this is a little bias cause i know the owner but still over all this is a good place to grab a drink if you just want someplace relaxed and quiet.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of... pizza. How can you mess up pizza? A veggie pizza should taste real good, not barely edible. I ate it cause I was starving and thats the last time I'll do that. They put my leftover pieces in a box and oops I 'accidentally forgot' it. $5 glass of cabernet and all was well with the world again.

This was the only near by bar that was not crowded and I really appreciated that fact. it has one of the better pool tables I have seen in a bar. There is a fish tank and the sound system is too good. The food was good as I had the pasta and pizza dishes and this place is pretty cool. There is a Turkish flag in the bar so maybe this is an ethnic bar and explains why it is not as crowded as the others in Andersonville.

Alright so normally, if I end up hating a place, I don't even bother to write a review, but for this one, I had to. First of all, we came into this place hoping to try a new fun place in the neighborhood. We ordered soda, and food. Simple as that. You refill soda, get the food, and give us a check...its simple, but some how, this waitress did not get it. I was a waitress for five years, and I know its tough, but when you are sitting watching baseball and people are waiting for their check with their credit cards out, there is something wrong. I feel bad because they all seemed friendly but I would never ever go there again. We ordered the combo which just consisted of fried food - which is fine, it said that - but the cheese sticks weren't cooked through, there were no onions in our onion rings and they all tasted the same. I understand it may be hard with fried food, and it could be that we ordered the wrong thing on the menu... That could be it...People could like Eating food that has no distinction from one another.. Fine. Feed us crappy food. Just have good service!! I'm so appalled by that waitress that to this day it makes me mad.

So when you break up (Simon's) its often hard to find another that has all of the qualities of the former and then some. No its not! Konak's is awesome. Very low key vibe, family owned business, super nice people, great service by the adorable Tuba! And the kicker? A $4.00 glass of Pinot Grigio that rocked. Yes they have interesting Turkish beer available and yes they have a pretty large menu of bar food basics with a Mediterranean touch but it was the open air front windows, the chill vibe and the basketball playoffs in the background (not the focal point) that got me at first sight. The place is huge so there is plenty of room, no need to be crammed into one of the neighboring establishments and greeted with surly beer snob service. Don't tell anyone, but I want to buy this place. Shhhhhhh.

Konak's to me is one of those random places you end up in. Very well known for their late-night kitchen and the not-so-sloppy second to go to if/when Hop Leaf is as packed as a can of sardines. $7 chicken tenders with super tangy honey mustard sauce (which by the way, I'm not sure I liked but was there and ate anyway) and $3.50 Bud Lights on a Fridays. There was also a very entertaining crowd playing pool and dancing their cabooses off next to us. Very spacious but got pretty humid towards the end of the night (blame the dancing machines). Although this wouldn't be my #1 bar in Andersonville, I have a feeling I will end up here time and time again when Hop Leaf is packed and/or to satisfy late night cravings when in the area.

On a night when you find yourself feeling rejected by a long wait for a table at Hopleaf, or just don't feel like being shoved around like a pinball while trying to enjoy the one or two beers you can get your hands on, slide a few doors down to Konak. Grab a seat, a drink, a little elbow room, and relax. Going to Konak is what I imagine going to my Turkish uncle's, if I had one, place would be like. I'm always well fed, treated like family, and my glass is rarely empty. The bartender keeps me buzzed by offering up his own special concoction of free shots from the bar. Special bright green Christmas shot, anyone? If your thoughts turn to eats, the hanging signs around send (not so) subliminal messages about trying the chicken chops. Pally, listen to every signal here, because those chops are tasty. For less than $10, you get 3 pieces of juicy, flavorful chicken, pitas, fries (or on occasion, baked potato), and a small salad. Wash it down with a drink special, such as a $3 Sierra Nevada, and you've got yourself a deal, daddy-o. Head to the back and chill in the cozy corner, watch TV (usually sports), play pool, or just grab a bar stool or table. This is a perfect spot to hit up with a group of friends or even a date, although I wouldn't recommend it as a destination for a first date to impress. However, any other time you'll find plenty of spots to hang with your hottie and carry on a conversation without being overpowered by the jukebox. Stop in sometime. Look for me in the back

I have been in Andersonville for nearly three years now, and this is the spot I hang out most often besides Starbucks and my living room. I can't believe that I haven't written a review for this place yet. Maybe I was trying to keep it a secret. Konak would get my first 5 star review if they improved the food. My favorite is the 1/3 lb. burger Konak Style® and the Chicken Chops® are well seasoned, but some things seem to fall a little flat. All in all, most of the menu is OK. I have always been a half-notch above ambivalent about the pizza here, but lately, it has been slightly improved (I think they got a new guy in the kitchen who knows about pizza spices or something). To sum up: if you like a low key place with a cool vibe (thanks to the blue lighting), where cool people hang out, the service is friendly, and the food is good, then give Konak a try. There's really not much else I can add. I love this place and I wish I could take it with me when we move back to Texas.

Stopped in while waiting for friends to go to a trip to Hopleaf. Helped myself to some $4 Carlsburg and caught some of the Bulls game on some flatscreens that were a bit too small for my tastes. Browsed the menu that included some salads, hummus, burgers, pizza, and decided to have a burger. The burger came with a healthy dose of red onion and was 1/3 of a pound for the price of $6.95, a change of pace from the usual 1/4 lb. burger. Other entertainment in the bar includes a pool table (I don't remember if it is free), electronic darts and plenty of room to sprawl out, unlike its neighbor next door. Konak is a good alternative to the now overly trendy Hopleaf and its excessive waits to get anything done.

Decent food, cheap beer, the bartender is a huge Bulls fan and hates Lebron James. What else could you ask for. Plus, I'm pretty sure if you go there enough, they'll put a picture of you on the wall. Either that, or they are in love with F list celebrities.

I really don't like to have to wait only to be manipulated by cheap restaurants and restaurant owners who like to play a shell game with their customers. You feel like they are trying to scam you or something. I ordered a bowl of lentil soup, waited forever for it, was charged $4.50 and only got a cup of soup. I literally waited 15 minutes for the soup. I asked the waitress if the soup was made already made (thinking maybe she forgot about my order). She said it was but they have to heat it up. It takes 15 minutes to heat a cup of soup?? I don't think so. Waited another 5 minutes after that. I finally just started to put on my jacket to walk out because it was taking way too long for soup (which is not made to order) and at that point I was getting really annoyed but then out came my "bowl" of soup. $4.50 for this??? Any decent restaurant that doesn't play games would charge maybe $2.50 or $3 tops for this amount of soup. They put a cup of soup in a bowl that was so small and shallow that it was only big enough to hold the equivalent of a cup of soup. Of course the rim of the bowl was big and stuck out only to give the illusion that the bowl was big when it really is small and shallow. I hate when restaurants try to manipulate their customers by serving something in a seemingly big plate or bowl so as to try to lead the customer to believe they're not being screwed when they really are. I should have walked out. That's just slimy and dishonest. Nope. That's not for me.

Konak is one of those quirky places that could only exist in a neighborhood like Andersonville. My parent's used to come here when it was a Turkish restaurant. Now its a sportsbar (kind of) frequented by a steady crowd of Chicago actors still run by Turks. Want some Efes dark with an eggplant pizza? Only at Konak. Its the kind of place you can go by yourself and walk our knowing the whole bar.

I've been here a couple times since moving to Chicago. The vibe is nice and they genuinely seem to appreciate your business. I believe the establishment is owned and operated by a gregarious group of Turks. When all the lights are out at night, and it's just me, alone, I aspire to be a swarthy Turk. I just feel like it would make life easier. Anyway, the guy who runs this place really appears to be busting his ass to make it work, and it does. I stumbled in last night (Friday) looking for some chicken chops and asked if the kitchen was open. "No. Tomorrow, kitchen open 'til two (AM)." But the look he gave me said, 'It pains me to see that I am unable to fulfill your gastronomic desire.' He rounded the bar quickly, delicately touched me on the shoulder, and pointed to the rotisserie pizza, "Pizza in case." On this night our ships would merely pass, but I see a Saturday (today!) in the future where I roll in and the Turks greet me as one of their own, and offer up free golden squirrel shots and chicken chops. I am also developing a superficial resolve never to go to hopleaf, despite their sweet beer. From what I can tell it's some sort of exclusive, elitist establishment that may or may not do you the favor. Do Konak the favor.

Konak is the Sybil of bars. It has gone through so many incarnations I've lost track. Now it's settled into something of a sports bar. The place is littered with flat screen TVs, which on a recent outing were playing everything from soccer to women's college softball. The big draw of Konak is that you're all but guaranteed a seat. The front room has a bar and several tables, the second room has a bunch more tables, including one for pool, and the back room has couches and a fish tank. When Hopleaf and Simon's are packed, Konak has space available. There's a 50/50 chance you'll see lesbians playing pool, so that's a bonus. The bar serves food, which is nothing special and more expensive than you'd expect. (8 to 10 bucks for a burger?) But after a few beers, anything could happen. Monday, the whole menu's 20% off. Konak has apparently become an actors' hangout. The wall opposite the front bar is plastered with headshots of people you've never heard of. (Forgive me if your picture is up there.) But once one of them hits, Konak's got it made in the shade.

What are these reviewers ON? Konak is awesome. I wish I could give them five stars but I haven't personally ingested anything beyond the beer menu. I try taking my boyfriend to places in the neighborhood. No matter how hard I try to steer him to Simon's, we never make it past Konak's. He loves this place. He likes it because it's never packed and the two bartenders are nice and dependable. And I think the blue neon lights tractor-beam him in... Every time we're in there the guys at the bar treat us like family - usually offering us whatever nuts or fruit they've brought in for themselves. And at the end of the night they've given us complimentary shots. (We never do any heavy drinking... and this has come from two different bartenders.) My boyfriend has had the pizza and he recently ate a Konak burger. It's hard to get an opinion out of him, but a couple of days ago when I was talking about getting burgers in the city, he said, "That Konak burger was pretty good." (I've mentioned elsewhere that his ''pretty good" is equivalent to any one else's awesome.) I think that a large component of how you judge a place is based on the expectations you have of it. Konak is right next door to Hopleaf. There beer selection is not going to compete. And it's a neighborhood bar with a mediterranean spin: I'd probably never go there for an earth-shattering, foodie experience. The value of this place is that it's also generally uncrowded, laid back, friendly and inexpensive (w/ bonus: late night menu). If you have an always-hungry, introverted boyfriend, who wants to drink czech beer surrounded by friendly people and be on a first name basis with the bartenders, you really can't beat Konak's. I'll have a bite next time and hopefully be able to give them their first five-star review - I'm sure they deserve it!

Wow! Can't believe this place gets good reviews. I consider myself easy, in more ways than one, but especially on throwing out a four to five star rating. Konak gets two. Here's my story: Started on the nachos to share and ordered a plain cheeseburger for my main course. The glorified ballpark nachos were cold. I can handle the fact that it was definitely cheese from a gallon can they bought at Sam's but it was the below room temperature of the cheese that got me. The burger was brutal, also Sam's quality. Thin and dry. I hate giving crap ratings but Konak gets 2 stars. Only two because the bar staff were pretty nice folks. Hopefully it's a better bar experience than a dining experience but I won't find out.

Service can take a while but the food (at least what I've had) is worth it! Good thin-crust pizza - I always order the Konak Special #1: eggplant, garlic, and jalapenos. Sounds crazy but it's just crazy DELICIOUS! (Add sausage and even meat eaters will love it!)

I remember the first time I walked into Konak pretty vividly. Everything had a tinge of blue to it, the lighting looked like Turkish lanterns and there is a wall on the left when you walk in featuring the headshots of some "actors" (which in of itself serves as about ten minutes of entertainment, those headshots). Konak is a strange place, with some pretty good food. They seem to think their chicken chops are a really big deal. "Have you tried it?" signs hang from the ceiling. Yes, Konak, I have tried it. It's pretty good, not salivatingly so but pretty good no less. I will stand behind your cheese fries for all eternity. This place is always a good alternative if Simon's is over-crowded or if you want cheap and pretty good food along with beerverages and such. Always an interesting cross-section of people too.

We went to grab some food and a few drinks before the TMLMTBGB show on a Saturday night. Had the super veggie pizza which was pretty good and wasn't as greasy as most pizza joints which was nice. Beer list was really lacking. The highlight of our visit was the waitress. Both my boyfriend and I commented on how she was the best server we had in a long while. Super attentive without hovering and didn't act like we were putting her out. Over all it's a nice place to grab a cheap dinner and maybe play a game of pool. Wouldn't go out of my way to go back, mostly because of the poor drink selection, but will probably stop in next time we're in the area.

Went to Konak's on a whim late last evening after a night of editing text.... Needed to have some fun and my friend and I went in three other places before we stopped here. I am SO glad we did! Konak has a lot going for it. Here are three of my favorite things about it: 1. Interesting selection of eastern bloc beers. 2. Really friendly staff and owner (thanks for the Jameson!) 3. GREAT people watching. .... and cheese fries. Did I mention cheese fries? Super relaxed, lots o' fun, and well worth it. Good specials too!

I don't know why I've never considered going in here before. Perhaps it's the name...doesn't really sound like a bar. And in general, have found enough watering holes that serve food in the neighborhood not to bother. But I'm glad I finally did. The inside of Konak is a surprise. A large, clean space with plenty of seating, t.v.'s, a pool table, darts and a cute little "private" seating area in the back. The pizza is pretty good...super thin, crispy crust and sauce/cheese that actually has flavor. The chicken wings weren't buffalo, but instead fried and seasoned. So, a pitcher of New Castle, a medium pizza and chicken wings rang up at a lovely $37 and I was able to sit and chat with my brother with ease while passively watching the Sox game. If you're ever in the hood and without a specific destination in mind, give this place a whirl.

We had a very brief, limited experience at Konak, but it was enough to make me anxious to return! A group of 5 of us was just needing to kill 20-30 minutes before we went over to see the Neo-Futurists, so we wandered into this place for a drink. We sat in this little area on the back with rows of couches along the walls, cool chandelier things, curtains, and a big fish tank. It was great! I've never had the opportunity to drink a Harp and watch some fish suck on the side of the tank, and I really enjoyed it. There was a juke box so the music was ranging from Beyonce to Johnny Cash. This place is a bit far from my neighborhood, but if I'm ever back in the area I'll go back. One of my friends said they have great hummus!!

Konak's is a great little neighborhood pub -- possibly my favorite this on this side of Andersonville. The thin crust pizza is truly fantastic and a great deal. I would actually put it in close competition with D'Agustinos -- you heard me. The owners are good for a bit of chat, and there is normally a good selection of sports games on the TV. Soccer/Football is frequently on. As is noted before, you are almost guaranteed a seat at this little place, so stop in before you head over to the Hopleaf or Simons. I think you'll enjoy yourself.

When I'm up in the Andersonville area this is usually the bar I go to. It is a gem just because it is never packed. I hate going to most bars on weekends because I'm now old and like to sit down with my drink and have good conversations. I don't want to stand and constantly be bumped into by people who don't have the courtesy to say "excuse me" or "sorry." And really it would be difficult to pack this place since it is HUGE! Seriously the room keeps going and going which I always forget until I have to go to the bathroom since I usually just sit up front by the bar. But back there they have darts, pool tables, and huge tvs. The drinks are reasonably priced and the staff is always friendly. I haven't tried the food, but I should do that soon. It always smells good. The only thing I don't like about this place is the fact that there is only one bathroom per gender. As in, one toilet for the ladies. For such an enormous place you'd think that there would be at least a couple stalls.

I've been coming to Konak ever since I emigrated to Chicago in the late 90s. It's a perfectly fine place, I guess. I keep coming back, so there must be something about it. Good tasty pizza, some nice beer deals. They updated the decor and jukebox over the past couple of years, and it's an improvement. But, why do I feel underwhelmed? It's either not as divey as I like or as ritzy as I like or some damn thing. Konak's theme song is "Stuck In The Middle With You", that pop-bubblegum Dylanesque classic by Stealers' Wheel. That's right, bitches, Reservoir Dogs.

My roommate and I decided to try this neighborhood hot-spot out the other day after hearing much buzz, and wandered the few blocks from our apartment over on a Sunday evening. The bar wasn't too crowded, and had lots of TV's going with various news programs and football games. Low-key, neighborhood spot vibe. We seated ourselves at a table toward the front of the bar and a few minutes later, the bartender came over and took our drink order. Our Diet Cokes arrived shortly thereafter, and we then ordered our food -- roomie: Chicken parm. sandwich, me: the "chicken chops." When our food arrived, I was a bit surprised. The apparently "famous" chicken chops ended up being a bunch of on-the-bone pieces of fatty, greasy baked chicken on pita bread. I'm not generally a fan of keeping a lot of fat on the meat that I eat, but it was so dark in the spot that I couldn't decipher what was edible from what was not -- so in the end, I didn't eat much at all of the meat. The side salad was yummy and the.. mashed potato-esque side dish was good (though not the fries advertised to come with it). My roommate's sandwich was average, but the fries were deliciously crispy and flavorful. Over the course of the meal, the bartender came over and looked at us a few times, apparently ignoring the fact that our $2.50 flat-ish sodas ($2.50, for one pour of fountain soda, seriously!?) were both empty and that I'd barely touched my main dish. Once we were finished, we waited over five minutes for the check at the table, before giving up and picking up the check at the bar. I'd come back to drink and perhaps to try the pizza, which has gotten so many good reviews on here, or the appetizers... But never again for "chicken chops." In a word: Disappointing.

I finally found a bar my more reserved less party animal girlfriend will really enjoy. This place is quiet, I felt odd playing a more up beat song on the jukebox, but Rebel Rebel didn't seem to bug anyone. It was nice to enjoy conversation without shouting. Nice big manhattens at a good price. I had the nachos to eat, they were ok. It's a pet peeve of mine when a menu says Melted Cheese and when your plate comes, it's cheese sauce. I wanted shredded cheese, but oh well. The only off-putting about the whole place had nothing to do with the bar itself, it was a patron who puked, right on the floor, next to our table, on her way to the bathroom. Yuck.

I've never eaten here...so this review is based solely on drinking experience. I've wandered in here when Hopleaf was just too insane and I can't say I've been disappointed. Cheap drinks, friendly and prompt bartenders, conversational patrons. What's not to like?

I find it amusing that many of the previous posts mention Konak's proximity to the Hopleaf. But, it's hard not too--the Hopleaf is practically a Chicago landmark. Actually, that's a great way to distinguish the two bars. Going to the Hopleaf is an EVENT. It's super crowded but they have every beer on earth(ok, hyperbole alert). Konak, meanwhile, is a more realistic bar where you'll have just as good a time. Don't let its modest looks deceive you. I've been to the Konak where they're playing Miles Davis' Flamenco Sketches or Guster or that band you like but can't remember their name. They also have woodpecker cider, which I've never even heard of. Not too shabby. With pool, some lounge-y couches and puh-lenty of space, Konak is always a winner of an evening. PS: It's way more of a bar than a restaurant...so you know.

This place might have the friendliest staff of any bar I've been two. After two visits the bartender knew my name and was buying me shots. The whole place is clean and chic, but very affordable. They have a strong selection of beers, make killer drinks, and have excellent food (try the jalapeo/sausage pizza or the hummus). If you like to multi-task when you drink they do have a pool table, a dart board, and a golden tee game, as well as an internet juke box. The dart board is poorly located (too close to a counter to get a good distance away, and the darts soar across the hallway leading to the restroom). This is advantageous, however, is someone has been pissing you off, you leave to shoot some darts, and they are forced to run by and dodge your attack just to make it to the restroom. Overall, one of the most fun bars I've been to. I only wish they were a 4am-er.

People don't hesitate to go in this place. I waited a full 6 months before I actually went in there and had a drink and another 6 months before I ate the food there and I must say, what a fool I was. Ok, so this place is not "posh" but it is friendly and welcoming no matter who you are. The pizza (thin crust wise) is the best I have had in Chicago....remember thin crust wise. Good beer selection and don't forget to find the not so hidden boards with beer and food specials. The staff here really gets to know and show you there appreciation by offering you a shot or might slip in that "oops forgot about the beer" special. Give it a shot peeps you won't be disappointed and if you ever have trouble on what you want to eat go with the pizza and/or the hummus plate.

I hope you enjoy turquoise. There's plenty of it for a lifetime in here-including the toilet in the men's room. This place always has at least one good beer on special for $3.00-that's a plus. The pizza here is surprisingly good. Anyone that knows me knows I'm a pizza snob. The garlic pizza is awesome.

Why haven't I ever been here before!? Seen it a million times but didn't go in until last night. It wasn't crowded at all, had super friendly bartender who actually asked my name and shook my hand, and had a good crowd and a good jukebox. Pizza is decent, but has the advantage of being super cheap. Similar with the beer. I will definitely be back.

Great late night place to get a drink, relax in a super chilled local environment and get a good bite to eat. The chicken chops are awesome and the pricing on the menu and drinks is super reasonable. One can grab a seat at the bar, a table or play some pool. The crowd is super mixed and unpretentious. The bar staff and owner are super friendly.

Konak definitely does not exude the dive-y charm of Simon's and it does not proffer the mindboggling selection of beers that Hopleaf does, but it always maintained status among the Andersonville bars in my mind because of its friendly service, blue-felt pool table and the fact that you could always snag a table, even on the busiest of weekends. I used to meet a friend for a night of pool at this casual actors' hangout nearly weekly. It was always a pleasure to see bartender Oguz (sp?), who may be one of the sweetest, friendliest beerslingers there is. In the old days, Konak would have easily rated four stars. Some time after I moved away in 2007, however, it underwent an "update." I put "update" in quotation marks because the changes were a backslide for a bar that already bordered on cheezy. The pool area that was formerly TV-free now has six screens, I think. Blech. The TVs above the bar, which were somewhat unobtrusive before, are now bigger. You could probably see eight screens while standing in one spot--totally unnecessary unless you're ESPN Zone or whatever. They also installed a bar with a wavy (rather than straight) edge, which you could imagine as a perfect set piece for a Miami Vice episode. They put a concession-stand pizza warmer on the end where I used to order my refills between pool games. At least they didn't rip out the charming multi-colored (Turkish?) lamps that hang from the ceiling throughout. Otherwise you wouldn't really be able to distinguish it from any other wannabe sports bar. Still, I have to give Konak respect for being a reasonable alternative to Andersonville's other jam-packed boozeries. Just, PLEASE, get rid of the wavy bar, pizza warmer and at least six of the TVs.

This may be a good place to grab drinks, but I made the mistake of going for lunch with a friend. I had a grilled cheese sandwich, but I don't believe it was grilled...more like a cheese sandwich on white bread. How do you screw up a grilled cheese sandwich?! Really? :) Anyway, I'm not rushing back.

I had passed by several times looking for a good neighborhood bar and burger. My friend and I checked it out for a late lunch. The server had little interest in us being there. She was on the Internet the entie time we were there. She never checked in to see how our experience was. The food was edible at best. I wish I had a scale for their 1/3 lb burger. It was more like an 1/8. I will not return. Avoid this one.

Everytime I go to Hopleaf, I seem to finish up the night at Konak's. I'll get to Hopleaf before 9 usually (I like to sit when I drink... less falling down) and have 2 or 3 beers. By that point, Hopleaf is usually packed, shouting loud and I've had enough that I can't really tell the difference between a Dubbel and a Tripel anymore. So I walk over to Konak's, order a Goose Island and settle in for a few more rounds. Its never too loud (unless you're sitting right under the speaker), prices are reasonable and the folks are generally friendly. I never sit in the floor area in back... dirty hippies. And it makes it too hard to get up to pee. Speaking of peeing, there's a single seater for mens & ladies so occasionally there will be a line, even thought the place is never more than half full. But the bathrooms are generally clean enough.

This place is alright... a good place to get away from the din of annoyances that can be found in recent Andersonville. It is inevitable that neighborhoods that offer sweet stuff to do and good places to go will always be wrecked by gentrification, condofication, yuppification, etc... but in each neighborhood that has been overrun by such viral infections... there is always a flagship of awesome... the last man standing... the last standard-bearer of realism and decency. Konak is just this thing in the fallen land of Andersonville. They have a pool table or two, low lighting (which is ideal in the bad-sphere), average prices, a slightly-better-than-average jukebox, interesting seating or not-so-seating layouts... I could go on... but I'm not going to. I would give it 4-Stars, but it really isn't all that unique or charming... just a good place to drink, without so much worry of jock-heads ruffling their feathers at you. Plus, they have Maker's Mark... always the mark of excellence within the realm of sweetness.

Friendly enough service, but unimpressive beer list and pretty disappointing food. Our skimpy "XL" pizza took an hour, even though it seemed to be a frozen pizza with toppings added, sandwiches had measly servings of fries, and the onion rings were the fake, processed onion kind.

We went here last night and had an *excellent* time. The bartenders were very friendly, and attentive. I'd give them a full 5 stars but we didn't try their food. Still great customer service, clean area, plenty of TVs, and decent prices secure a 4 star for me. Someday when I try the food I hope to up this to a 5 star

It's a nice unassuming bar run by nice unassuming guys. I'm not into the packed bar scene, so Konak is a good place when you would rather not shout just to talk to your friends or place an order. It's clean. The food is solid. The crowd is pretty normal. The drink selection is so-so.

need a drink? like now? not 30 minutes from now while you wait for the group of 18 x-sorority girls that have to decide what type of belgian beer they will try next? like OMG. can't deal with crowds and lines cause you're f-ing starving and you want something that's not goat cheese infused with lavender encrusted almonds? go to konak. note: i think this place is a front for something else though. whatever. it's cool.

I love this place. It's a great local friendly bar. And I mean really friendly, the bartenders are awesome. It has pool and darts and plenty of seating. Recently it seems Konak has tried to go upscale, and I wish they'd stop. I love the kooky 60's lighting fixtures, random fish tank (in the very nice seating area in the back with the big tv), and sketchy bathrooms. Oh, and their pizza is actually really good.

This is where I will go after Hopleaf. I like it for it's relaxed atmosphere, decent beer selections, nice attentive staff and a good amount of food to make you feel some what soberish. All the while not hurting the wallet for very much. Also a good local hang out and place to watch a game or two.

  • Joshua M.

I would have given this place at least a three star if I hadn't made the mistake of eating the pizza here, which is slightly better than a frozen tombstone if that. The place is run by Turkish people, and looks middle eastern inside which is cool, but that's where the theme ends. So it's a weird blend of a sports bar, bad pizza, unusual decor, and pool table. It is less crowded then Hopleaf, and you can actually hear a conversation so that is a plus. Service is so-so... we sat at a table in the front and eventually had to approach the bar ourselves because apparently the server wasn't taking care of the tables in the front. A server also spilled a glass of water on some coats and a purse and made no apologies about it. I guess I'm glad it wasn't beer. Oh and their soda was flat.

I happened upon this place when trying to find a quick snack and to get out of the rain and cold today. I saw this place and went inside, First off, it was very nice and warm, but the music was way too loud, playing everything from Elvis to Smashing Pumpkins and who knows what else. It was a bar with a few seats and big pool table in back. My friend and I ordered a medium super veggie pizza. It wasn't bad but definitely could have used more tomato sauce. The waitress, the only person there as far as service was concerned, wasn't the most friendliest or engaging. We had to make contact with her first to get seated and then to order. Being that it was out first time there, we didn't know we had to initiate contact with her first. So we just sat there and waited until finally I said to my friend that perhaps we had to go up to her and place out order. Even when I first walked in and was standing there for a few minutes, I had to ask her if we could just sit where we wanted. Now the interesting thing about the service is, I could understand if the place was busy, but there was hardly anyone there, and by the time we left, we were the only ones leaving. I can undertaken that maybe there aren't a lot of people out due to the bad weather today, but no one in the place at 6 p.m. on a Saturday night. Ouch!

    (3)
  • Amber R.

Konak is great because it is never, ever crowded, not even on a Saturday night. Yes, I first went there because Hopleaf was too crowded, but I find myself going back again and again to stay in the neighborhood but avoid the crowds.

I wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it fell short of a good experience. If you can't get into Hopleaf then this place will do for a decent beer selection. The service leaves something to be desired. I placed an order for a friend and then my friend changed his mind and the waiter said he couldn't change it because the food was already done. Really? Done in 2 minutes? The waiter reluctantly changed it, but it was weird that he would say that to begin with. The food was really sub par when it FINALLY came out. Someone next to me had pizza and that looked pretty good. If I ever end up here again I think I will try that instead.

I started coming here when every time I tried to go to the Hopleaf it was too packed for comfort. Enter Konak. Spacious, reasonable, decent beer and pizza. And a swank little couch-lounge area in the back and a pool table. Big clean bathrooms too. You can't go wrong. Stop going to the Hopleaf and come here. Wait, don't. I want to keep this huge place to myself.

Awesome thin crust pizza and good drink specials. Konak is a laid back, not overly crowded kind of place. My husband and I started coming here almost a year after moving to Chicago. We were sad we didn't start coming before that, it's 2 blocks from us! The staff is friendly, almost everything on their menu is tasty and the prices are reasonable.

Not too much to offer as a restaurant, but as a bar... not too shabby. A perfect place to duck in when Andersonville is packed and you want some peace and quiet when you drink. Some of the coolest lamps in the world. Low lit. A lot of headshots of people that you have never heard of on the wall. Pool table is never used and darts are avail. Golden Tee from 1977 (or so it would seem).

Ah Konak, may your 70s Aladdin lighting and carpeted 'conversation' platform live through the gentrification of this neighborhood. Beware this is no upscale, well-stocked bar, actually some of the tap beers taste like they have been sitting around a while. But if you are craving great, late night fries and a brief respite from wall to wall crowds at nearby bars this is it. Rumor has it that the owner was a professional soccer player in eastern europe somewhere...

Good burger and fries. A nice place to watch a game. The bartender was a nice guy with a good personality. It was a little loud, but not too bad. They have a front area for sit down dining, then a bar area and a back area with a pool table. Good for a lot of different types.

This Konak place is awesome. It's a huge space, and it's almost never crowded. I hear that it's a theater hangout, and it's probably true by looking at all of the autographed photos on the wall. The drinks are average as far as price, but strong enough to be worth it. The people here are friendly on both sides of the bar. There's also a few dart machines in the back if you feel like getting wasted and throwing pointy objects. Good times! I haven't tried the food, but I will one of these days.

Cheap beer and soccer! Had thier pizza, I think it's ok. But I do like the bartenders and waitstaff. Nice place to watch games.

Pizza was pretty crappy, and the berghoff was $4 a pint, which I think is pretty steep. Like the blue lighting, and the chill atmosphere....could do with a few less TVs though. If the Hopleaf is too crowded, this is a nice fallback option.

My roommate brought me here after attending her show. I guess this is where all the actor's hang out after their shows get out lol. I think I stood at the wall of headshots and still did not recognize anyone. But hey I'm sure they are all great theatre actors from Chicago that I have no clue. Still got my respect though. I can tell the crowd is full of theatre/film types which is cool. Great music and always fun watching your friends try to dance to it horribly. I didn't try the food here but I'm sure it's not that bad if I saw my fellow friends chowing down though they could have been hungry because they just got out of their show lol

Konak is fun little bar with a sitting area in the back that reminds me of my parent's basement. Lots of comfy old furiture plus a big TV and fish tank. There is a pool table in the back of the bar as well. I'm not sure that I've ever seen more that 15 people in this bar at any given time. It's atmosphere isn't all that exciting but the bartenders sure are nice and easy to talk to! They, alone, make the place worth going to.

A great place to go when the Hopleaf is too crowded, as it often is. It's almost right next door to the Hopleaf, the beer selection is not even close to be being as good but they have a nice staff, pool table, comfy lounge area with couches and usually enough room to move around and talk to your friends. They also serve some standard bar food, which is thoroughly standard.

Konak is my local go-to. You know, the place that's cheap, no fuss, and you totally know what you're getting. Konak earns 5 stars because it not only rocks as my "local go-to" but also because it stands on its own as an awesome restaurant. I've enjoyed every single thing I've ever ordered at Konak. The service can be a bit slow, but the company is so pleasant that I'm not sure it counts as a deterrent. The pizzas are delicious, the fries are always fresh, and the beer is cheap. Andersonville can be rather expensive so it's awesome to know that there area few places to get yummy food in a relaxed atmosphere.

The bartender was a sweetheart. I'm a sucker for a sweetheart bartender. The food was...well it helped make it possible for me to continue drinking. Which I did a lot. It's not the first place I'd take people in the 'hood, but it is a bar. It serves alcohol. And sometimes...that is enough.

Good pizza, we got the special #1 that had eggplant, garlic, and jalapeños. Pretty darn good. And this place has some of the last expensive drink prices in Andersonville. $2 Sam Adams. Staff is courteous, dive atmosphere but that is fine.

Konak is my favorite place to go after seeing Too Much Light at the Neofuturists or just in Andersonville when I don't wanna spend a lot of money. They always have a $2.50 special which is usually a cheap type of pilsner, or I've even seen Sam Adams Boston Lager. They don't have a huge selection, but you really don't need it here. The kitchen is open late, and they have the best cheese fries. I'm not kidding... get the cheese fries.

Wow, to have pizza as part of your name and serve this... In Chicago...sad. Besides that, came here for a few beers, very minimal service. It appeared that the owner was sitting at the bar and the whole bar revolved around him. In my opinion, you're better off at hopleaf next door.

Review for pizza only. I tried their thin crust on our moving day, and honestly it was pretty bland. Nothing special, but I'm sure it would go okay with wings and a beer. I was pretty disappointed, as there wasn't much flavor to it. Wouldn't try their pizza again.

Awesome beer-no one is ever here and they have a pool table. Super trashy but worth the regrets. Order pizza, it's great.

I come here quite often and enjoy it every time. Now that summer is coming around it is warm inside though. I enjoy the food, the pool and the staff. I've had the pizza a couple of times and have enjoyed it but have to say it isn't anything special and for the price along with being in the area, it's good. The fries and cheese sauce is a must and they have Louisiana hot sauce to top with. The Chicken Arturo for $9.95 (Lightly broiled chicken breast, accompanied with pan sauteed mushrooms, onions and green peppers, topped with blend of cheeses and melted in the oven.) was my favorite I've tried there. The music isn't always on point but have been able to play some songs off of my phone before which was cool. If you are looking for cheap drinks and food with an inviting staff that serves you promptly, this is the place to go especially if you like to play pool.

Had the hummus plate on special one evening and enjoyed it. It was filling along with a beer to wash it down. The bread on the plate was a tad dry, but the hummus and spinach made up for it. I have also had a boat another time and thought it was pretty good.

This has become our go-to sports bar! There are always seats open during the games, and it's never uncomfortably packed. The menu is a little blah though. The pizza is really good, but they don't really have any "meat lovers, veggie lovers etc." so if you want toppings, the price can climb pretty quickly. ($2 per topping for a large! Ouch!) We do enjoy the nachos and the drinks are a great value though. They don't have dessert... that continues to upset me. Lol overall though, the atmosphere and service here is great and I'll be coming here for any and all Chicago games.

For too many years I've never taken Konak seriously enough. With Hopleaf next door, Simon's down the road, and so many other places to eat and drink nearby, one could wonder why anyone would ever go in to Konak at all. What do people see in this place? How are they still in business? Best answer I can come up with: This bar is the easiest place to be in Andersonville. While other establishments nearby are crowded, overpriced, gimmicky, or endangered by newer developments, Konak suffers from none of these complications. You can always get a table here, no matter what day or time. The menu for food and beer is very uncomplicated, and reasonably priced. The beer list, for example, covers whatever mood (and financial circumstance) you happen to be in. Konak is also distinguished for being one of the very last Turkish bars in a neighborhood that used to have more of them. But unlike some other past and present Turkish spots in Chicago, Konak doesn't go overboard. They keep it subtle. You may notice some Turkish decorations on the wall and Turkish beer on the menu, but that's really it. No cheesy fabric on the wall or cushions on the floor. It's just a regular place where you can meet your budies and drink. The food is sometimes a disappointment. I wish it was better. But there's plenty to choose from, and I plan to explore their food menu further. They are famous for their "chicken chop," which I haven't tried yet. The pizza could definitely be better. However Konak is still a good place to catch dinner if you want to avoid paying so much more at other places nearby. They are one of the last bars on Clark street where you can eat dinner for under $10. The servers and clientele are all friendly, and I've never had a bad time here. If I were basing this review on sentiment alone, I would have to give four stars. But in objectively comparing to other places, Konak is only average. And as Andersonville changes, I'll come to appreciate that "average" even more.

I will say the food was not great. We got the appetizer platter, pretty Blah - except the chicken fingers, those were actually good! Also, the hot sauce - just some regular stuff - was great! I would not come and eat here again, but I would come for drinks. Super cheap daily special $2.50 Sam Adams on a Saturday night!

This place is special for me. Not only because it is a nice dive bar, it also is one of few places carrying my favorite beer, Efes (Turkish beer). Them having a pool table is a bonus!

Came in around 230pm today. Sat down in front and waited 20 minutes for service. Nobody behind the bar, nobody up front at all. Walked in the back by the pool table and the employee was hanging out by the pool table with what appears to be her family, since she was feeding a small child. This lack of service caused us to leave and take our business elsewhere.

*Update, have to increase stars from 3 to 4 after trying their thin crust pizza. Delicious, better than Ranallis and Pizzeria Aroma which are similarly priced and serve similar style pizzas in the area. Delicious and inexpensive, not overly greasy, homemade thin crust, sausage had good flavor. The pizza was sturdy, as in the crust was crispy and not floppy or weighed down by excessive cheese or toppings. I really like Ranallis pizza because it's cheap and tasty but it's obvious Konak uses higher quality ingredients and are the same price point. When I need cheap pizza night Konak will be my go to over Ranallis now. I shouldn't have waited this long to try it!* Konak is a nice neighborhood bar and grill that isn't divvy. Tables aren't sticky and dirty but no one is putting on airs either. They have very good bar food. Their fries are excellent, well battered and crispy. Really good in cheese sauce. This is a good spot for a nice juicy simple cheese burger too. In an age of too thick burgers topped with the kitchen sink you can get a normal and tasty burger here without all the fuss. You can also get the Konak Special burger with sauteed peppers, mushrooms and onion. That = yum. The Konak Special #1 burger is my favorite burger in Andersonville. They have a few Turkish offerings on the menu too that I'm determined to try but haven't. I like that I have the option of something more special than typical pub food should I venture outside the box someday. A huge draw are their generous drink and food specials. They have a daily meal special which is really impressively cheap and always have a few beer specials, usually coupled with a shot. Cool! It's a chill place to relax and throw a few back.

One of the downsides in moving to a new neighborhood is that I don't get to stop by here as often as I used to. An unpretentious, cozy place. Their thin crust pizza is just fine.

Nice dive bar. Decent menu, not huge, but really good at what they do have. Staff is so very nice and genuine. Love love love the atmosphere. Great lighting(you'll see what I mean when you go in) and all around great atmosphere. Frequent stomping grounds of mine.

After having lived in Andersonville for over a year I finally got around to checking out Konak. The space is bigger than I imagined and the secluded pool table area in the back is a nice touch. The beer list is definitely sub par, but the prices are really good for the beers they have. The wife and I were there on a Friday night so we got to split the $7 doughboat special which was a great price for how big the thing was (see pic in gallery). The flavor wasn't jumping off the plate by any means, but it was still tasty and something that you can't get anywhere else in the neighborhood. I'm excited to get back to Konak and play a game of pool soon!

So much more than "the place you go to when Hopleaf is full." Let's get real, folks, Hopleaf ain't all that. Sure, gobs of rich white people go there and drink their $50 beers, but it has no color, and it has no soul. Konak, with its bizarre portrait wall, Moe's Tavern vibe, and cheap-looking Turkish lamps, is for the Hopleaf outcasts. Mixed drinks are stiff and cheap, the owner is drunk, and the pizza is legit. 'Nuff said.

Wanted to check out a new pizza joint in the neighborhood. We Ordered a pizza & chicken tenders for delivery. Both were very basic in preparation, no special seasoning or anything 'extra'. The pizza sizing seemed off, we ordered a medium and it really is a small (same size as jewel brand frozen pizzas). I would have be better off spending $12 on 3-4 frozen ones for the same price. The chicken tenders came cut in half, not sure why, but it was 3 whole tenders in an order. Meh. This won't be my first choice next time. If you have kids or picky eaters, this will be an okay place to eat, but if your looking for something with that special touch, it's not here. Delivery was quick, side note.

Konak's is..... Fine. The pizzas are pretty bland, but if you're hungry they're fine. They don't have much on tap, but the Hopleaf is right next door, so I guess trying to out-craft them on crafts would be silly. And the service is fine. I guess. I did have one issue where the waitress basically refused to split the bill for roughly 15 minutes and some people in our party had to go run out and get cash when she finally agreed to because there's a $10 minimum on cards which was not communicated beforehand. And on the whole the servers seem uninterested. But hey, they're not doing cutting edge research...they're taking your order so I don't mind the whole uninterested part as much. My favorite part about Konaks is that when the Neo-Futurists sell out. They order a pizza for the audience from here. Awesome.
