These guys are are absolutely outstanding. As an event coordinator, I'm constantly in search of new caterers but time and again, I go to J & L because I know that my event will be flawless. Scott is dynamite to work with and he's helped me with everything from veggie platters for 20 to fully catered parties for 300, and each time he's accommodating, inventive and incredibly professional. All of the waitstaff and bartenders are friendly, polished and knowledgeable about the food. Working in an upscale event space, this is critical and I count on them for my most important programs. I love, love these guys!

J&L catered our wedding on September 13, 2014, and I could not have been happier with them. The food was delicious, but the real highlight was the service. The entire staff was friendly, skilled and accommodating, and our event manager, Jim Bailey, truly went above and beyond to make sure our wedding day was as wonderful as possible. When your caterer is crouched down, coaching the ringbearer for his walk down the aisle, you know you're working with a real gem. Thank you so much, Jim and team!

J & L catered our November 2014 wedding at Salvage One. If we could give them more than 5 stars, we would! The food, service, preparation, and professionalism made booking them an easy choice for us. We worked with Scott and cannot say enough kind words about him. Our tasting with him exceeded other tastings we had gone to greatly; not only was the food absolutely delicious but he was very familiar with our venue (Salvage One). Scott gave us some really great and practical suggestions on how to do our floorplan layout (what was the best way to lay out the tables so the large room didn't feel too empty), where to have the dessert station, how to pair speeches with what part of the meal, etc. His suggestions helped to keep our wedding moving smoothly and the guests happy. Not only that, but he was well networked with the venue staff and the day-of coordinator we hired, so that made all planning go over really easily. The wedding went off without a hitch. His staff was on it all night... topping off wine glasses, brining hot food out at rapid speed, and never letting my husband, parents, or in-laws glasses go empty. One thing that I really loved that they did was for our dessert station. We had ordered cupcakes, and Scott provided several slabs of marble he had to make impromptu, really elegant cupcake stands. This saved me so much money, as I was pricing cupcake towers and looking at renting them, and even the most basic ones are not cheap. The guests raved about the food, the bread basket alone was impressive, a variety of breads served with high quality butter and pink Himalayan salt. Then we had salads, and an option of beef short ribs, macadamia nut crusted fish, or a vegetarian dish. We stuck with a beer, wine and soda package which appealed to everyone, and the bartenders were efficient and professional. Overall, after looking at many catering vendors for our wedding, we felt we got the most for our money with J&L Catering. The team was a joy to work with, the food was incredible for "wedding food," and the staff working at the wedding was quick, efficient, and very professional. We would recommend them to anyone!

After my review, Scott immediately got in touch with me and apologized for my perceived lack of communication. He said the emails must have gotten lost in a spam folder. He promptly sent me the necessary quotes and remained in contact until we made a decision. I informed Scott that the prices were too high (we are a non-profit) and he made some changes. After all was said and done, we still did not use J & L for our event due budgeting but my communication with Scott was great after we resolved our communication issues.

Our wedding last weekend was catered by J&L, and they did a great job from the moment of first contact through the night of the wedding. It was a pleasure to work with them. After attending several weddings which had typical wedding food (rubber chicken, tasteless, starters, etc.), we set out to find a caterer that would provide a unique experience and leave the guests stunned with the quality of the food. After our tasting, we thought we had a winner with J&L but were still concerned whether the quality of the tasting would translate to the wedding night. Sure enough, they came through. We received so many compliments on food. They nailed it. But, a caterer has to be more than just the food. They are really the architect of the service that night. And, once again, the staff came through. They were efficient, courteous, and respectful. The event was kept clean and the food and drink was consistently refilled. The staff was clearly prepped, to the nth detail, and ready to serve. Even the bartenders knew what our preferred drink was and had it ready when we approached the bar. A special thanks needs to go to Rachel, who was our primary contact throughout the process. We felt comfortable that she was looking out for our best interests the entire time. She was a pleasure to work with. She helped coordinate the event and continually checked in with us to ensure we were happy. It was also a pleasure that she had worked with several of our vendors previously and developed great relationships with them. The close bond she had with our other vendors gave us a sense of confidence that there was no way she'd let the event be anything but a tremendous success. And, that was accomplished!

J&L just catered my work event for 27 people and they were AWESOME! Ted and team were really accommodating throughout the entire process. Extremely friendly and easy to work with. J&L suggested a menu to get the process started and we barely made any changes as J&L was able to immediately identify what would work best for our group and venue (yacht on lake MI). From the passed hors d'oeuvre to the buffet to the beer and wine selections the event was perfect. Get the lobster crepes! All of the food was fresh and tasty. Guests are still talking about how good the food was! Thank you, J&L.

After my first review, we remained in contact with J and L. We actually got put in contact with the owner (Ted), and he said he would take care of us personally. After an initial call with him to talk about our thoughts/vision, he said he would get back to us regarding dates for a tasting. We still haven't heard back. Unfortunately, responsiveness doesn't appear to be great in this industry as a whole, but J and L may be the worst. We were very active in trying to work with them, and they treated us very poorly. Stay away.

Ted and his team did the most AMAZING job ever on our wedding this past Saturday. After doing our tasting several months before the wedding, we knew that J & L was the right choice. We were worried though -- what if the food on the night of the wedding wasn't as good as the carefully prepared tasting? Our fears were totally unfounded however, as the food was outstanding in every possible way, and countless guests told us how delicious the food was. In addition, the service was flawless, and every member of his staff that night always seemed two steps ahead of any request we had. Five stars all the way.

J&L Catering exceeded all expectations at my wedding this past weekend (6/21/14) at the Ivy Room. The food and service were both outstanding! I credit Ted Grady for putting it all together, working closely with my wife and I from the very beginning to create a customized menu and bar selection. Ted even consulted with us on table, chair, and linen rentals and worked to meet our style and budget. It was refreshing to work with Ted because he listened to us and made us feel comfortable in our choices...other catering companies did not provide this consultative approach. Immediately following our ceremony outside at the Ivy Room, it started pouring and everyone had to go inside. Ted Grady and his staff at J&L were prepared, however, and we ended up having our cocktail hour downstairs instead of outside. It was a fantastic back-up plan and guests were immediately served with passed appetizers. Everyone raved about the bacon-covered dates! The food, wine, and bar service for the reception were top notch. Multiple people told me that the wedding cake (w peanut butter frosting) and cake "shots" were the best they had ever tasted. I highly recommend J&L Catering! Ask for Ted Grady.

J&L Catering was absolutely the best decision we made for our wedding! Scott was not only a professional and attended to our every detail, but he is one of the nicest vendors you will ever work with! Our wedding was on May 10, 2013 at Salvage One. From the moment we met Scott, he made us feel at ease with the biggest decision of our celebration- the food & beverage. Starting with the tasting, J&L impressed us so much we still to this day talk about how much fun we had. Scott gave us plenty of ideas to help us come up with 3 creative food stations, which ended up being an Italian, Mexican and Gastropub station. They were a HUGE HIT at the wedding. From fried mac & cheese balls and ale marinated brisket on pretzel rolls, to al pastor corn sopes and fresh guacamole to parmesan risotto cakes with assorted sauces and caprese salad. Our guests went out of their way to tell us how delicious the food was and even saying it was the best they've had at a wedding. The stations flowed very smoothly and there was plenty of food for people to eat seconds (and beyond!). Scott let us drop off all our candles, favors, menus and cupcake stands a couple days before the wedding to J&L's office. It was a huge relief to know that J&L would help us with all the details. I trusted Scott with every aspect and I couldn't be happier with the way everything turned out. He is amazing! J&L also took care of our "Boutique Bar" package, which stocked all our favorite liquors like Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Death's Door Gin. They accommodated our quirky request of having plenty of coupe glasses on hand for Manhattans and champagne toasts as well as cordial glasses for our digestif of Underberg, They even set up my mother's creatively crafted vintage cupcake stands to display an assortment of Molly's Cupcakes. It didn't end there! Scott insisted we not worry about packaging anything up the night of the wedding. His staff boxed up our candles, left over Underberg and cupcake stands and they were ready and waiting in the Salvage One office the morning after the wedding. What more can I say? J&L Catering and Scott made our wedding fabulous. We just can't thank them enough.

J&L catered my wedding on 1/18/2014 at A New Leaf. I was absolutely thrilled by both the service and the food they provided, and highly recommend them. We worked with Rachel Razowsky, and as other reviewers have noted, she is amazing. In addition to the catering and furniture rental services we expected, she also coordinated the timing of all activities and other vendors during our ceremony and reception. She did so much more than I would ever expect a caterer to do, and she did it with the highest possible degree of professionalism. And she's hilarious and extremely pleasant to work with. I couldn't be any happier about my interactions with Rachel. The rest of the team from J&L was also incredibly attentive and friendly, and I'm not the only one who noticed - dozens of our guests commented to us on how impressed they were with the catering staff. J&L truly made the event even more special than it already was. The food they provided was delicious and well prepared, including beef kabobs which were cooked perfectly, and not overcooked like you might expect at a large event. They were happy to create a custom menu for us, but we didn't need one, as their standard menu choices included a wide enough variety of options that we had no problem finding something perfect for us. Based on the quotes we obtained from about a half dozen caterers, J&L was no more expensive than their competitors, and I can't imagine how any other competitor could possibly provide better service. To summarize: do yourself a favor and give J&L serious consideration when picking a caterer. Picking them was the best decision we made during wedding planning, and if you pick them for your event I bet you will feel the same way.

I work in a law firm, and am we have several catered client meeting per week. In addition, we have a catered hot breakfast for employees every Friday. We recently began using J&L, and they are fantastic! Great prices, healthy choices, reliable delivery. They are willing to work with the client, and have saved us last minute more than once.

J&L made my wedding a wonderful event. The food and service were outstanding. Ted was the best vendor I had... Everyone who attended my wedding commented on how the food was the best they've had!

I would not have had nearly an amazing wedding if I did not have Jim and J&L handling our wedding! J&L catered my wedding on 2/22/2014 at Stan Mansion in Chicago, IL. I cannot tell you how amazed I was at the service and the food they provided! Not only would I highly recommend them I cannot tell you how many compliments I received the night of our wedding and afterwards on how delicious the food was but also how amazing and attentive the wait staff at the wedding was as well! We worked with Jim Bailey, and as others have noted and I can attest to, he is AMAZING!!! Jim not only coordinated everything with our venue, he even did multiple run throughs of the venue with myself and our day of coordinator to make sure he had all the details for the decorations, flowers, other vendors, etc. in addition to all of his details. He was so on top of his game and I was blown away! Jim did so much more than I would ever expect a caterer to do, and he was fun, funny, and extremely pleasant to work with. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Jim and loved every minute of working with him! Also the rest of the team from J&L was also incredibly attentive and friendly, and our guests loved interacting with them! J&L truly made the event even more special than it already was. For the food we went with a half beef/half chicken option and everything was perfectly cooked. I had multiple guests tell me how impressed they were on how the beef was cooked perfectly and not overcooked like you might expect at a large event. J&L will create a custom menu for your, which we did not end up needing, as their standard menu choices included a wide enough variety of options that we had no problem finding something perfect for us. Based on the quotes we obtained from 4-5 other caterers, J&L was no more expensive than their competitors, and I honestly can't imagine how any other competitor could possibly provide better service and add a better experience to what is a fun but stressful planning process. To summarize: make the greatest choice you can make on the food at your wedding as it is one of the top 3 things to think about for your guests in my opinion, and give J&L serious consideration when picking a caterer. Working with Jim & J&L was the highlight of our wedding planning, do yourself a favor and pick them and I bet you will feel the same way.

I can't imagine my wedding without Rachel. Second to the groom, she was a key figure from start to finish. The food at our wedding was incredible - we had just what we wanted (fun hors d'oeuvres, good salads, three entree choices, vegetarian options). My husband and I didn't know where to start, but Rachel worked with our budget and came up with the best possible options. Our tasting was so much fun and our wedding was even better. The service at the wedding was aces. The bartenders, the servers... everyone was so friendly and did such a great job to make sure we didn't have to worry about a thing. Rachel was more than just food-help. She suggested where to go for alcohol and how much to order, how to reign in other vendors, etc. I always felt calmer after meeting with her. Part of me wishes I had a thousand weddings to plan with Rachel. However, if I actually did have a thousand weddings to plan, I'd drown myself, so, instead, I pass her on to you.

We had our wedding at my parents' home in the Chicago 'burbs, and I can safely say hiring Jim Bailey at J&L was the best decision we made. He is quite possibly the most on-top-of-it person I've ever worked with -- he was organized, prompt, reliable, professional, and budget-conscious. He remembered details from previous conversations that I didn't even recall. His expertise in planning and executing such a complicated event (in someone else's home, no less!) was so impressive. With Cam his captain, (together the Dream Team, I swear) he handled EVERYTHING perfectly -- and we had some complicated aspects involved in our wedding that could easily have caused major blips. We had also hired a day-of coordinator, and Jim was so on-top-of-it and helpful that he made her role somewhat superfluous. He had thought of everything! I remember him asking me the week of the wedding whether we preferred that he hand us a glass of champagne after being introduced or whether we just wanted it to be waiting on our table for us. (?!) That kind of attention to detail is mind-boggling, if you ask me. But what stands out the MOST to us and the family is Jim and Cam's attitude and demeanor. They are simply delightful to be around. They're so smiley and positive and friendly and thoughtful. As my dad said to Jim at the end of the night, the saddest part is that we won't get to see Jim and Cam so frequently anymore now that the wedding is over. :) Thank you Jim and Cam for a perfect wedding!! P.S. Oh yeah. And everyone was raving about the food all night. We had passed hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour followed by three food stations (no seated dinner) -- and we had so many compliments on the concept and the food alike. The stations' themes worked great together -- a seafood station (grilled shrimp, fresh chilled crab claws, salmon, etc.), comfort food station (beef/short rib/black bean sliders, mac n' cheese, veggie kabobs, etc.), and Italian station (antipasto meats/veggies/cheeses, tortellini, etc.).

Wanted to let all know about this GREAT Caterer. Ted Grady and his group of merry men (and ladies) had our guests spellbound with each serving of their unique and delicious food. J&L catered my daughter Katharyn's wedding on 6/29/13 at Floating World Gallery. Right from the start you knew it would be a great evening. Our out of town guests - many from California - were extremely impressed with not only the food and presentation, but the way the staff moved through out the crowd and were nearly invisible. As parents, you want everything to go perfect on your daughter's wedding day and J&L was PERFECT. We highly recommend them for you catering needs

They far exceeded our expectations. I cannot give high enough marks for the outstanding job they did for our wedding. We worked with Scott to design the menu and plan the serving. We rented the Lang House for the event and Scott made two visits to the property to work out all the details and plan ahead of time. The menu planning was very helpful. Most important, the quality of the food, the service, all was outstanding. The staff did so many small things during the ceremony and reception that just put them over the top. We continue to get compliments on the quality of the food and service. As hard as I could try, could not find a single complaint. The amount of food was more than plentiful and same for the quick and accommodating service of the bartender. They may not be the cheapest, but believe me, you get more than what you pay for.

Post Wedding Review: What exactly would we have done without Rachel and J&L Catering? I'm not sure. I don't even want to think about it. Rachel was absolutely WONDERFUL from start to finish and was truly a lifesaver the day of the wedding! I'm definitely a type-a/micro-manager type (as are my parents) so for us to relinquish control and feel good about it is really saying something. We had complete confidence that every detail would be taken care of - and they were! Another gentleman working at our wedding (I believe his name was Barrett? Please don't hate me for forgetting) was fantastic as well. The food was exactly what we wanted and our guests wouldn't stop raving about it! I really could go on for pages but I think I'll leave it at that -- 2 thumbs WAY up =) Tip: If you're doing appetizers, be sure to get the lil tuna cone things... delicious!

We used J and L catering for each of our daughters' wedding receptions these past two years at Salvage One and A New Leaf. The food was excellent. The wait staff was personable and attentive. Scott and Rachel were both pleasures to deal with. They were an important part of two wonderful evenings. We will hire them for all our future major events. Try them. You will not be disappointed.

We used J&L for our wedding reception on September 15, 2012 at Maxim's (in the Gold Coast). Similar to other reviews, our experience was fantastic. Rachel was excellent to work with! She was very responsive during the planning process and made sure everything ran smoothly at the wedding reception. We did tastings with three caterers after narrowing the list down based on menu options and price. J&L blew us away with their amazing food at the tasting. And an added benefit - they were the best value in comparison to other two final vendors. We received tons of compliments on the food at our wedding, so the quality in mass production matched what we experienced at the tasting. My friend had used Rachel and J&L for her wedding last year and had the same experience. Overall, I definitely recommend Rachel and J&L if you want great service and excellent food!

J & L Catering went above and beyond for our Sept. 22, 2012 wedding at the Nature Museum in Chicago. Our coordinator Evelyn Hitchcock was courteous, helpful and so responsive throughout the entire process. The food and service were impeccable and Evelyn even helped with the processional lineup during the ceremony. Our wedding planner decorated the Nature Museum with amazing detail and J & L helped create memorable table settings. The cocktail hour and dinner service went smoothly and everything tasted fresh and delicious. We chose the hanger steak and halibut as our entree choices and both turned out wonderful. I am Vietnamese American and my husband is Chinese American and Evelyn addressed our wishes to incorporate flavors from our cultures. Our passed hor'dourves had some Asian influences and we also served mini- banh mi sandwiches as a late-night snack. We were busy entertaining guests and didn't have a chance to pick up all the food, but the head waiter left one of each dessert and two banh mi sandwiches on our table. J & L were thoughtful throughout and provided excellent service from planning to the reception.

My husband and I worked with Ted at J&L Catering for our wedding reception in Chicago on 5/27/12 at Loft on Lake. From start to finish, Ted and his team were the epitome of professionalism, not to mention very delicious food! The tasting was wonderful, with a professional server, and Ted also tasted the food along with us, which was great, and took away from the awkward feel we had at other caterers that watched us for our reactions as we tasted. All of the food was very delicious, and Ted really made sure that the food matched our tastes and preferences. And bonus, they sent us home with ALL the leftovers, which was wonderful, and provided us with lunches and dinners for days to follow! The day of the reception, Ted and his team were wonderful, supportive, professional, and definitely did everything they could to make our day run perfectly. After my husband and I walked down the aisle, a server was waiting for us with 2 glasses of wine, awesome! The whole night I was so impressed with everyone on their team, and all of our guests raved about the food and service. A big thank you to Ted and his team, you guys are wonderful!!

We could not have been more pleased with the quality of the food (amazing) as well as the high level of service and professionalism of the staff. Having really great food and a dependable level of service were extremely important to us, and J&L exceeded our expectations on all fronts. To this day our friends and family still rave about the food at our wedding! During the wedding planning process we met with a handful of reputable catering companies but J&L stood out to us immediately. Our coordinator at J&L, Scott Reichelsdorf, was extremely insightful and flexible when it came to designing our menu. In addition to his insights on food, Scott had done numerous weddings at the Chicago Cultural Center so his experience and understanding of how to effectively cater big events immediately put us at ease. Everything came together perfectly on our wedding day--the food was perfect, the timing of the dishes was on point, and the staff was attentive and courteous. Scott and his staff definitely went above & beyond - and we couldn't have been happier with our decision to use J&L. We would highly recommend them to anybody in need of a top notch caterer!

Choosing J and L to cater our wedding was one of the best decisions we made throughout the whole wedding process. We loved it so much, we used them for both the wedding and the rehearsal dinner! We worked with Ted, who was incredibly patient, kind, and down-to-earth. He corresponded with us for nearly a year to make sure the food was exactly what we wanted. He sat with us during our first tasting and explained every item that came out of his kitchen. If we weren't totally happy with it, he gave us more options and ideas on the spot. We decided to change some menu items within 3 weeks of the wedding date, so he scheduled a second tasting for us! The food turned out perfectly, and was exactly what had hoped to serve. He was also very accommodating with our alcohol requests. We wanted to serve a sparkling wine that he did not carry, so he let us bring it ourselves and had his staff serve it. His staff, by the way, was excellent! Everyone was very nice to the guests. They all congratulated me and my husband on our wedding. They allowed everyone to finish their meals, but kept the dinners moving. The set-up of the spaces themselves was also great. Ted knew exactly where to put tables, chairs, and the bar so that everything flowed within the space. When the numbers of our guests changed near the wedding day, he was able to change the rentals around to accommodate us and still make sure everything looked great in the venue. Ted was truly a pleasure to work with. He made planning the wedding fun. Definitely go with J and L!

I was outsourced to work at the venue where they catered an event. The staff was beyond professional. The event ran about an hour or so over and they were really patient with the crowd. The food smelled pretty fantastic and they made sure to have the area spotless when they left. They worked a second event a few weeks later and it was the same professionalism from before. The gentlemen who managed the event made sure to introduce himself and made me a plate of food for my help. It was nice to be appreciated. They also make the sandwiches for the Nature Museum, I noticed. I like the artisan cheese sandwich a lot as well as the chicken salad.

We used J and L Catering for our wedding on 10/21/11 at A New Leaf. From the onset, everything was exceptional! Rachel Razowsky was our contact and from the moment we met her, we knew we were in great hands. She is gracious and warm, yet decisive (and oustanding) at her craft. It is because of her, that the day unfolded as well as it did (she's part wedding planner too). We also really appreciated the fact that she is direct about what things denote an 'extra' cost and those things that do not. You can not beat that kind of trust. She is truly magnificent! The compliments we have received on the food itself (and let's be honest, when you think of wedding food you typically don't associate it with your favorite foodie Chicago restaurant) are too numerous to mention. Do not be fooled! You CAN have food that shocks the masses. Everything looked and tasted absolutely amazing! In sum, my suggestion is to save yourself time and go straight to J&L for all your catering needs!

We hired J&L for our wedding reception and they were exceptional. They won us over at the tasting, and with our contact, Evelyn Hitchcock. Evelyn worked tirelessly (sometimes too much I fear) to ensure that Kari and I were happy with every last detail. She was organized, realistic, and professional. The entire experience made for one heck of a reception, and Evelyn is to thank. The tasting was a rousing success. Evelyn was flexible with our menu and bar selections, and worked with our price point very openly and honestly. This was another reason they stood out from the other vendors. The week prior, Evelyn walked us through the reception site, explaining every last detail on what would be available. She had it down to the exact spots where our tabletoppers would be. The day of could not have gone more flawlessly. The J&L staff are informed, pleasant, and accommodating. The set up and food were out of this world (all from a site without a working kitchen....simply amazing). Evelyn and her head captain handled every aspect of the reception to ensure we had everything we needed. It was reassuring to know she was there, but not "visible," and my assumption is that'd be the best compliment I could give her. J&L; Evelyn; our entire wedding staff; YOU ALL made Kari and I feel like a king and queen for a night, and that's the highest praise we can give. The work done was extensive, and exceptional. I will recommend J&L far and wide, to whomever I can, because this place is without a doubt 5 STAR. Thanks again. It was a blast! Jeff and Kari.

J&L Is wonderful. J&L did an excellent job at our wedding reception, bringing in unique tastes ala Le Colonial - French Vietnamese. We were all wow'ed by the food which was excellent, service superb - from the tasting to the actual event. Would definitely highly recommend.

The food at our wedding was a huge hit. We got so many compliments, especially on the chicken and beef entrees, people were saying it was one of the best meals they ever had. Guests also loved the mashed potato martinis, I wanted to eat three of them! Sadly I didn't get to try many of the awesome hor d'oeuvres but I heard they were fantastic! J&L Catering did a good job and they accommodated our vegan and gluten free guests. My only complaint is that dinner went longer than we had planned but I imagine that was due to having the extra course and the smaller space of our reception venue made it more difficult for the wait staff to navigate, plus our reception venue contact was a total B and made everything so difficult but J&L pulled it off! Overall I think they did a nice job and especially considering what terrible luck we had with other catering companies in the beginning. If you go with J&L ask for Evelyn (she is so sweet and good at her job) and Paul as your "captain."

J&L catered our wedding in September, and our guests still cannot stop talking about how wonderful the food was. Rachel, our event planner, did a fantastic job helping us plan the menu, the layout of the event and the timing of everything. She was very helpful on the day-of the wedding, making sure that the speeches happened at the right time so that the buffets were ready immediately following the speeches and the food was piping hot. We were extremely pleased with the results and can't say enough about J&L - from the tastings to the planning to service on the day of our wedding, they were superb!

The day of our wedding was so easy! And it was all due to one person- Jim Bailey. Jim was absolutely phenomenal. Jim is detailed, professional, budget conscious, and has so much experience. He had great recommendations for other vendors- our DJs in particular were a great find!! Jim worked with us to find a tasty menu within our budget- and our tasting was so much fun! The reception itself was PERFECT! Every member of the staff- bartenders, waiters, etc were friendly and so professional. Our food was served piping hot. I didn't realize that might be a problem with other wedding dinners, but many of our family and friends expressed pleasure that the food was HOT and delicious. Every single detail was taken care of for us. I worried that I would be so stressed that day- trying to make sure that it all went off without a hitch. I didn't need to worry. Jim Bailey took care of it all and the only thing that I had to do that day was enjoy my wedding. He had glasses of wine for us at the door, he sent us upstairs to look at the room so that we didn't forget to do that. His staff led us to a lounge area after that, brought us some of our appetizers and let us enjoy the peace and quiet for a few moments before we went to our cocktail hour. It felt like the entire staff was making sure to take care of us. At the end of the night, they rounded up all our presents, personal items, spare liquor and decor- Monday, when we went to pick it up, I couldn't believe how organized it was! They had even located my Camelbak and left it there for me. Bonus- my family and friends are still raving about the food and the service. Incredible. I would wholeheartedly recommend this catering company to anyone who wants a great experience.

J&L Catered my wedding at Salvage One this past October. We worked with Rachel Razowsky and I cannot say enough good things about her and the company itself. We asked for a local, seasonal fall menu and her first stab at putting a menu together was near perfect. I'm vegetarian with vegan tendencies and my husband eats meat, so we were trying to balance both tastes. They made us "make your own pot pies" and both the vegan version and the beef stew (so I heard) were phenomenal. All of the side dishes were excellent and fit the menu perfectly. We ended with a dessert of mini seasonal pies (pumpkin, apple, berry, etc). For a late night snack, which sadly neither my husband nor I were able to try, we got "ball park nachos" and tamales, all of which our guests reported to be tasty. The staff were all so friendly and kind both before the event and the day of. One of the servers even made me and my groom plates of food to ensure we had a chance to eat. Rachel was more than accommodating with taking care of our leftover liquor and centerpieces while we were on our honeymoon. If you are getting married or planning any type of catered event, I highly recommend J&L. The pricing is fair and you are sure to get great service and even better food.

We got married on 1/7/12 at Salvage One and used J&L Catering. I could not have been happier with J&L Catering. Food was the most important thing to us for our wedding and, as a result, we shopped around quite a bit to find the perfect caterer. Scott at J&L was the first person from a caterer that completely "got" our vision for the event. We are both avid cooks and we wanted great food that was appropriate for winter and also wanted to honor both my Midwest upbringing (mac-n-cheese and braised short ribs) and my husband's Italian heritage (antipasti, risotto, etc.). Scott absolutely nailed it. We didn't need to make any changes to the menu that he proposed to us at the tasting. I'll say that again: There was not a SINGLE change that we had to make to the menu that he proposed. He listened to our vision and absolutely nailed it. The planning process was smooth and Scott was always available to answer any questions throughout the 8 months leading up to the event. He is cheery and professional and very approachable. Fast-forward to the event itself: It is ironic that the sign of a good vendor is that you don't actually interface much with them during the event. The staff was professional and completely unobtrusive. Everything just happened perfectly. My husband and I did not need to be involved at all (except to eat!) which was good because we were busy getting 9000 pictures taken and trying to greet 230 guests. After the event, my brother reported to me that we had a few seating chart issues (2 guests showed up that weren't supposed to and several guests that were supposed to attend did not show up). Apparently, Scott and his team made adjustments to the place-settings immediately without question and, as a result, no guests had to wait to sit down or to eat. And now for the food. Obviously, cooking for 4 people at a tasting is very different than cooking for 230 at an event. I was so pleased when I tasted all of the food at our wedding and it tasted as amazing (if not even better!) than the food at the tasting! We have a lot of friends that work in the restaurant and catering industry that attended the wedding and they all stated that it was the best wedding/event food that they had ever had. This included several friends of ours that work at a competitor catering company. Since the wedding (3 days ago), I have received a bunch of e-mails from guests. Here are some excerpts directly from these e-mails: "....the food at your wedding was, by far, the best food I've ever had at a wedding..." "...this was the first time I didn't need to wait in a line for food at a wedding...." "...not only the best wedding food I've ever had, but the risotto cake and the braised short rib were the best food I've ever had period..." "....I had 4 of the "late night snack" gyros and they were the best gyros I've ever had....how is that possible that the best gyro I've ever had was at a wedding??? Amazing" I've also already received several requests for recipes for the food that was served at our wedding. Seriously, when does ever happen? I could go on for many more pages, but, in short, I highly recommend J&L Catering for your event. Scott is amazing. The food is incredible. The service is impeccable.

Let me preface my statement by saying that I typically do not give reviews on YELP but I felt obligated to let everyone know about J&L and how fantastic they are. My wife and I used them to cater our wedding and every little detail/concept was covered by their professional staff. We worked with Ted who is the primary head of the company. He was extremely informative in putting together our appetizer menu and main entrees. Furthermore, his personal knowledge pointed out some of our pre-meeting decisions where either too heavy, not in season, etc. I appreciate someone who hones their craft to that degree to be that well informed and professional. However, I think that one of the biggest compliments I can give of the company as a whole is that they where perfect for our wedding, but also catered my father in laws company event and where fantastic as well. You do not find many companies that can adhere to large corporate events and small clients at the same time. It is purely amazing the positive direction and professionalism you receive from these people on a daily basis. One last thing I would like to point out. My wife and I had little miscellaneous items that we needed transported to the reception area. The fact that we where getting married in Chicago makes transportation of any items a challenge. Ted was not required to help us, but offered his transport trucks and staff to help with the delivery of the miscellaneous items. It is little and helpful stories like that in particular that speak volumes of the credibility and successful nature of this company and their staff. I 100% endorse their services and if you have a chance to become part of the J&L experience, I highly advise it. (btw, the food is the best catered food I have ever tasted, no exaggeration)

Just to echo what is already on here. J&L is wonderful! They did our civil union in February and were so wonderful! I didn't have to worry about a think with them. From the tasting to check-ins, to working on payments, the whole thing couldn't have gone better. Thanks Ted and team. You are so great!

J & L have catered a few events for my family and each time they have been very good. Last weekend they did a party specifically for me and everyone loved it. I dealt with Scott, who was extraordinarily friendly and made the process effortless. The service was also really friendly and on top of things. The food was good and there was plenty of it. We had an Asian theme for dinner, but the deserts were really the high point- their cupcakes and cheesecakes on a stick are phenomenal. Yum!

I worked with Evelyn to plan my wedding, and everything about J&L Catering is fantastic. The food was amazing (both appetizers and dinner), the wait staff was extremely kind and professional, and Evelyn was 120% on top of everything. I would recommend J&L to absolutely anybody who wants outstanding food and service on his or her wedding day.

J&L has the best food out there and has a wonderfully professional, helpful and kind staff. Furthermore, they are a company with a conscious, and have often donated to and cut breaks for the small non-profit I work for. I can't say enough good things about them!

We walked in dreading that we didn't get to choose our own caterer and had to choose from a list. We walked out with a friend! Scott and his team were amazing and made choosing the food for our less-than-normal wedding day an absolute blast!! When we met with Scott and told him what we were looking for in terms of stations and curious wedding food he seemed excited. We told us what worked and what didn't at previous events and we came up with a menu that we couldn't wait to try. The tasting was incredible! And absolute blast. It ended up being the one time we actually got to try this delicious food. We cut some things and added others. All over a bottle of wine and good conversation, along with our odd choices of sliders, Asian noodles, mashed potatoes, mac-n-cheese, and some yummy veggies! And the haul of leftovers home - let's just say I wish our fridge was always that packed with great choices of food to take to work!! During the time leading up to the big day, he was in constant contact. We even got to have the cupcakes and the booze delivered to their site so we didn't have to haul it to the event space! One less thing to worry about! The day of was off the hook and they played a big part in it. As soon as we walked out from our ceremony we got big hugs from Scott and Karey. And then our choice of drink was instantly put in our hands before our guests even made it out to greet us. And then throughout the night they continuously made sure we never had an empty glass. We're still getting compliments to this day about the food and with pride let them know who did the catering and how amazing it was. I felt like we got more than a caterer, but a wedding planner to a small degree and also, a friend! Because I miss Scott already and have an urge to plan another event to get to work with him again!

We contacted J & L for our upcoming wedding. The food at the tasting was delicious, and if it weren't for two small details, we most likely would have gone with them for our caterer. Detail 1: For the first half of the tasting, Rachel only spoke to and addressed questions to my fiance. Slightly annoying. Detail 2: That was two months ago, and they still have not sent us a proposal. The caterer we did hire sent us the revised proposal the day after our tasting.

In short: J&L was phe-nom-en-al. Jim catered our wedding at the Women's Club of Evanston. The food and service were wonderful, but Jim went so above and beyond for us to make sure our wedding was special. We received compliments throughout our wedding--our answer each time referred to Jim and his general excellence. We absolutely cannot recommend anyone more highly than J&L. Jim's (and his amazing team's) services as caterer and, essentially, wedding planner, were amazing. I'm anxiously awaiting the next event I need catered so I can work with Jim and J&L again!

We used J&L for our May 2015 wedding and worked with Scott. We loved the entire J&L experience! Scott was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and delivered everything exactly as discussed on our wedding day. The food was amazing! All of our guests could not stop raving about how good the food was. Great job Scott and J&L!

J & L catered my wedding on 5/10/2014 at Loft on Lake and were simply fantastic to work with!! Not only that, but the food was incredible!!! The guests at the wedding are still talking about how delicious everything was and I've heard multiple times that it was the best food they have ever had at a wedding! The entire team put me at ease and were so great to work with. I love J&L Catering!!

J&L was actually on the recommended vendor list for the Kenilworth Club. While I would have liked to work with J&L further and experience a tasting with them in planning my wedding, it probably worked out for the best that it didn't happen. The crux of the issue was the communication. It started off better than expected! Evelyn responded to my initial query within a day. After that, communication dropped off a bit, with email responses after a week, but I understood when she said how nutty January ('14) was. We found a time to talk on the phone, and I thought it slightly imposing that she was trying to influence me to rent chairs outside of the ones available at the KC bc she didn't prefer them. The week after, I got an order confirmation and bill for an event that obviously wasn't mine. I informed Evelyn of the mistake. It just seemed really disorganized and rookie for a senior event planner. I didn't initiate communication with J&L after that, as I was in the talks with other more organized caterers. Last odd straw was that I got a phone call from Evelyn the month or so after that point, informing me that J&L wouldn't be available on my day because they confirmed another event. Well, it's nice to see that you'll follow through on a communication like that, even though it was assumed by that point J&L wouldn't be involved with my wedding. This caterer was $2000+ more expensive than the other handful or so caterers that I consulted with. Be informed, Yelpers!

Jim Bailey WAS FANTASTIC! The best coordinator! I miss him already. Without Jim I would not have been able to have hosted the most amazing Bat Mitzvah luncheon for my daughter, her friends and my family. He has impeccable taste, attention to detail, sense of fun and can find good compromises. Several guests told me how AMAZING the food was and how seamless everything was. i trusted him completely and he returned every single one of my never ending emails. Thank you Jim and your entire staff who were a delight to work with this past Saturday. I cannot wait to work with you again.

Long story short: J&L lost all our information, did not follow up in a timely manner, did not follow up as promised on multiple occassions, and showed absolutely zero respect for my fiancé and myself as potential clients. If you do decide to contact J&L, I would highly recommend that you avoid working with Rachel. "Attention to detail, great communication skills and a true commitment to our clients are three key traits in every J&L employe. " - J&L Website

This one star review goes out to Scott and probably not the entirety of J & L Catering. My fiancee and I decided to take our money elsewhere after dealing with his unprofessionalism and inability to provide comprehensive details. Scott was an absolutely atrocious communicator, which was shocking after reading such positive reviews. We received multiple excuses for late responses and the responses we did receive did not contain answers to questions we had asked. We were looking for options, he provided none. Scott was the ultimate disappoint.

J & L catered my wedding in September 2014. Where to start with this review. I guess let me first say that I absolutely love Jim. He is seriously one of my favorite people on this planet. He pretty much single handedly made sure that my wedding went off exactly as planned. Sounds weird for a caterer, right? I know, but he functioned as so much more. I was planning everything on my own and he asked all the right questions to make sure that I was thinking of absolutely everything that would make our big day the success we wanted it to be. Now that I professed my love for Jim, on to the real review. I can't say enough about how delicious the food was. Literally everyone who attended the wedding ranted and raved about it. Including a very picky grandmother who is very hard to please! If you have vegetarians that will be attending your event, J & L has about a million options to choose from. All of them delicious enough that even the meat eaters will love them too. As for the service, I can't say enough about how fantastic they were. Everyone functioned together like a well oiled machine. Absolutely no one wanted for anything during the entire event and my husband and I were treated like movie stars. We even had guests that had previously been in the catering business in attendance at the wedding and they did nothing but compliment J & L for days after the big event. I truly can't say enough about how fantastic they were. I will definitely keep them in my contacts for any future big events and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a top notch caterer.

Having used J and L for two separate special small events within the past year, I have only the highest praise. Their flavor profiles, exquisite preparation and execution are divine and elevated. Their work is pure artistry and innovation. About a year ago, J and L catered a completely unique, over the top event at Primitive gallery for me. More recently, J and L catered h'or d'ouerves for an elegant house walk party in my building. The hundreds of tiny small bites (spring rolls and crepes) began the evening on a spectacular note. Each beautifully created piece had the freshest, lightest, most delightful flavors in it. Said the "it" woman at the party ( the guest most 'in the know' on all the newest, coolest, and hip Chicago resources, "J and L is not only the best place in Chicago to cater a party, but I'd say it's the only place to go now". I worked with Ted Grady who is fabulous. He understands exactly what will be needed to make an event special. Fantastic! J and L is remarkable. Superb!

Yesterday was my brother's wedding and I have been anxious and excited to write this review. J & L was unbelievable! We cannot thank Jim & his team enough. Every detail was executed to perfection. From the moment we went to the tasting at J & L's offices on Branch street we were impressed with their execution and attention to detail. We even discussed slight changes to the menu with the chef, who was more than happy to accommodate our tastes. On a wedding day, this is the last thing you are worried about and having Jim to execute for us was amazing! His entire staff was very professional and friendly, everyone went above and beyond to make sure everyone way happy! Thank you so much J & L, I look forward to using you again!

we used j & l for our june wedding... up until the actual event, we were excited and confident to work with j & l... however, the night of, there were many service issues that were difficult to overlook. with that being said, our guests had wonderful things to say about the food (especially the appetizers!) and the servers (with the exception of the head-server) were extremely pleasant and attentive.

I used J&L Catering for my wedding, and overall, I was really pleased. The quality of the food was very good, and I thought that they were quite accommodating given all of our requests. We had an oyster bar, passed hors d'oevres, stations for dinner, a cake and multiple crisps for dessert, then later in the evening mini-burgers and passed cookies and sweets. The oysters were a huge hit. We had three different kinds, each of which was fresh and delicious. All of the passed hors d'oevres were vegetarian, and they were wonderful. Each one (six total) was unique and tasty in its own way. I think my favorite was the fried eggplant with olive tapanade and lemon zest. We had three stations for dinner, each with a multiple sides or salads and an entree or two. Several of the choices were vegetarian. Again, everything was really tasty. Our cake was beautiful and delicious: alternating layers of carrot and red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. We also had blueberry crisp and peach cranberry crisp. The passed mini burgers were probably everyone's favorite item of the night. I have only one complaint, but it is pretty serious. We requested that there be no nuts in the food at all because of multiple family members with severe nut allergies. Everything that was made on site was nut free, but the passed cookies and sweets had been made in advance, and several of them had nuts. Luckily someone in my family ate a cookie before any of the allergic people did, and warned them not to eat anything off the tray. Though a major crisis was averted, I was concerned that such a serious oversight occurred.

J&L catering was such a pleasure to work with! I personally work with Scott R. for my company's event. The party itself endured a huge bump in the road (the boat caught fire) but Scott literally helped save the party and turn it into one of the most memorable events my company has ever hosted. The team at J&L are amazing and provide the highest standard of service, not to mention their food is incredible! I highly recommend them!

Jim and team catered my wedding and they were absolutely top-notch. They went above and beyond every step of the way. He was so detail oriented, I almost felt like Jim was my wedding planner rather than the caterer. He and the team made sure everything went smoothly the entire night. Not a single complaint from me. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

J and L catered my wedding on 9/3/11. They did an absolutely wonderful job. The food is great, and the service is outstanding. Rachel was great resource for us through out the planning. We used J & L Catering for a board meeting this past week. They catered in lunch and it was fantastic. I worked with Scott who had everything together exactly as he said it would be even explaining that their "box lunches" were not your average fare. They didn't disappoint. Everything was delicious. The whole experience dealing with them couldn't have been better or more simple. Add the courteous, professional staff to the delicious food and it's a no brain-er. We will definitely use them again!

I hired J&L for a party at my house (30 guests) and they did a phenomenal job! I had previously tried their food at a fundraiser and was impressed with the quality. For my party, the food (brunch buffet) was so good that my husband talked about the food for days afterward! Misha was my event coordinator, and was very responsive to all of my concerns, and even came to my house a few days before to preview my space and plan accordingly. Their prices are comparable to other caterers that I researched for my event. Aside from the excellent food, my other compliments are for the staff. I had an amazing captain, server, and chef-- my guests were well tended to and were never with an empty glass. The staff were on time, extremely personable, well organized, and very professional. They left my kitchen cleaner than how they originally found it! I will certainly use them again when I have another event to plan.

J & L is truly fantastic. Working with them was easily one of the best decisions we made regarding our wedding in September 2010. To begin with, Scott R., our contact with J & L, was incredibly responsive, flexible, creative and fun. He happily accommodated various changes to the menu during the months between the tasting and the wedding, and he was in general just a huge pleasure to work with. He comfortably lent his expertise regarding the best choices for the menu, food station set-up and even when to cut the cake. (We were fairly clueless about all this stuff, so it was just wonderful to have someone who knew what they were doing to help guide us through!) What's more, he seemed to really care that we had a great night and that we enjoyed the food and service that J & L provided. Furthermore, the food was fantastic! We had a delicious meal including steak & onion and salmon & pineapple skewers, a mac & cheese bar and much more! Based on our research of other catering companies, we got a fantastic deal with J & L given the quantity, quality and variety of food we were able to serve to our guests. The rest of the J & L staff was helpful, friendly and attentive, and everyone went above and beyond in helping to make the wedding day run smoothly. Given Scott and J & L's great relationships with other vendors, we didn't even have to deal with any of the leftover alcohol on the night of the wedding (which would certainly have been a pain), and they even helped us store some of the various decorations that we didn't want to have to deal with at the end of the night. It was the small touches like that that really showed us how well the staff of J & L take care of its clients and do everything in their power to help ensure a fun, stress-free night. We would absolutely recommend J & L to anyone! They were a dream to work with, and we would book them again without hesitation!

Scott and J&L Catering worked with us on our wedding this summer in Lake Geneva, WI. The absolute best in taste, quality and service. We decided to have passed apps and two app stations along with a plated dinner at our wedding. Scott helped us creatively come up with a menu that represented who we were. Their execution was perfect - from the tasting to the reception. There was no drop off. The servers and bartenders were top notch. We do not have a single complaint. Feedback from our guests was that it was the best food they've ever had at a wedding. We agree!

My wife and I are just coming down from the high of our wedding a month ago. We chose J & L as our caterer and worked with Rachel Razowsky. Both turned out to be great decisions. Our situation was a little different than most couples and I did a lot of the planning. From the moment I talked to Rachel on the phone, I had a good feeling. She was very understanding that everyone can't serve Filet and Lobster. The next step was the tasting. This was quite an event. Being the first time either my wife or I had been to a tasting, we did not know what to expect. We felt like we were eating at a five star restaurant with our own personal waiter. All of the food was great and we were able to decide on our menu. They also packed up the rest of the food for us to take home which was a nice touch. Rachel also recommended Maggie Roeder for the cake because they have worked together a lot in the past. Maggie came to the tasting so we didn't have to set up another tasting for the cake. (Turns out she makes about the best tasting cake I have EVER had.) When the wedding came, Rachel took care of everything, as she was our day of coordinator at the reception. The week before we did a walk through at the reception site to make sure everything was set. The day of the wedding we were so stressed about everything that having Rachel was priceless. We didn't have to worry about a thing at the reception. From the cocktail hour to the cake cutting and the meal, everything went perfectly! She made sure we had a great time and we were completely at ease. The food was amazing and their wait staff was very professional. The flow of food was great and no one was kept waiting for their next course. We could not have been happier. Anyone getting married or looking for catering NEEDS to look at J & L. It's not cheap but I find that you get what you pay for. In this case, you get amazing food, professional service and a catering company that knows what they are doing. Thanks J & L and Rachel for making our wedding so special and delicious!

Appalling is a good word to describe my personal experience with J&L during planning for and at our wedding reception. Based on what happened to us, I would be concerned about getting anything beyond the basics. And because there was no coffee service at most tables, maybe not even that. Things they agreed to do, and by "they" I mean Rachel, were left undone. There was also a serious lack of good judgment displayed. I think their food was good. But if you're planning an event that is special to you, please look elsewhere for your caterer.

J&L has catered many important events for my family and me and I have grown to trust them implicitly! The food is always excellent, the prices are good and the staffing is incredibly professional. The level of service J&L provides set them apart from any other caterer I have worked with. A few months before my wedding my original planner flaked-out and one of the J&L staff stepped in and became my wedding planner. He literally saved the day (not to mention my sanity)! J&L did a fantastic job with both the rehearsal dinner and the brunch the day following the wedding (I was disappointed that my wedding venue would not allow outside caterers so J&L was not an option). The food was creative and excellently prepared. The specialty cocktails were a huge hit. Most recently, they planned a going away party. They did it in record time, armed only with a budget and a vague idea of what I was hoping for. They were responsible for every detail and they did an excellent and elegant job. The food was delicious with food stations based on several Chicago neighborhoods. It was a perfect send off for good friends!

J&L Catering. Ted & his staff exceeded our expectations for our Chicago cocktail reception this past weekend. I knew from the tasting that we were going to be in good hands. They had a beautiful table set up with samples of the placeware, glasses and their food presentation was beautiful. Ted worked with us to create a menu that would fit our theme and took our suggestions/recommendations to adjust the food to our pallet/love of spice to heart. He took the time to walk thru the venue and gave us ideas for set up based on his experience. It was wonderful to be the bride and not worry on the day of the event because Ted's staff showed up on time, set up quickly, had everything ready and worked like a well oiled machined throughout the evening. I was impressed that J&L's provides their own staff and can handle almost all components of the event from coat check, to bartenders, servers and chefs, which made everything else so easy. His staff ensured my guest and more importantly, my husband and I, enjoyed ourselves. I was really pleased with their service and the food and received many compliments throught the evening from my friends and family. I would hire J&L for future events and I highly recommend them to any couple looking for a professional cateror that will provide good gourmet food at a reasonable price with impeccable service. Thanks Ted/ J&L for an amazing experience! Rosey & Fred

J&L just catered my wedding, and I could not be happier with their service. Rachel Razowsky was who we worked with and she was lovely. The food was great, the staff was incredibly professional and they were able to comply with some strict dietary requirements we had. I've had so many people tell me they couldn't believe how good the food was. I noticed during the reception that everyone seriously gobbled down every last bit of the food, it was that good! I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a caterer in Chicago.
