My DH and I came here to see our favorite Blues Band, Mississippi Heat perform. The band was scheduled to start at 9 PM, so we came early to make sure we got a good seat. Apparently, the management changed the start time to 8 PM, but the band didn't know about it (neither did the people who run the website that said 9 PM start time). The two band members that were there at 8 did an awesome job at improvising an entire set while waiting for the rest of the band to arrive (Go Pierre!) The setup of the back porch is long and narrow, so it can tend to feel a little crowded when it is full. There are TV monitors throughout the seating area, which is helpful because there are columns that obscure the view of the stage from certain areas. If you are there to catch a show, I suggest you come early to get a good seat. We managed to get a seat, directly in front, which was very cool. The downside of it was that every time my DH got up, he blocked everyone's view of the band. It was also a little annoying that there is a walkway the waitstaff uses that is directly in front of the stage. They cross right in front of the band every minute or so which is very distracting. The stage is so small that often the lead singer had to step aside in the middle of a song in order to let people pass by. The food was really good, but kind of pricey (in my mind) for what you get. It isn't really gourmet, just expensive. We got the VooDoo Shrimp appetizer with 6 shrimp that cost $13.00. It was tiny, but good. My DH got a medium sized salad (forget the name) that had tiny strips of steak in it for $15.00. I got the fish of the day (salmon) that was about $17.00. Bottles of beer were $5.00 and I got a Guinness on tap for $6.00. My biggest complaint was that it was too loud. It was extremely loud in there and pretty much impossible to hold a conversation. We ended up texting each other back and forth when we wanted to talk. Then again, some people like loud places, so I guess it's really just a preference thing. As far as service goes, I don't have any complaints. They were a little slow to help us at first, but the waiter was very apologetic. We were pretty low maintenance... all we needed was our food and one beer, so we didn't require much attention at all. My DH was busy filming the band. The management was a little wierd about us filming there. He was supposed to get prior approval, but they were flexible enough to let him go ahead on short notice as long as he didn't disrupt the performance or the customers. The manager even allowed him to tie in to the sound system. Unfortunately, the sound guy wasn't very enthusiastic about letting my DH mess with the soundboard, nor did he want to mess with it himself. He took a quick look at my DH's equipment and said he wouldn't be able to tie in because of (blah blah blah)... then he just walked away. I'll never really know for sure what the deal is. Parking is always kind of a nightmare Downtown Chicago, so we opted for the easiest option and used the valet right there at House of Blues. It ended up costing $28.00 plus tip. When all was said and done, the night cost us about $100.00. We saved some money by showing up before 9 pm when there is no cover charge. I'm glad we went, but probably won't go again for awhile. It was fun, but was it $100.00 worth of fun? Ask me in 6 months and I'll be able to tell you.

2nd time here to hear my friend Jeff Gibbs play the sax for Chris Tiritili. But this is my 1st time ordering food. I had the catch of the day (salmon) it was pan seared with olive oil, with mixed veggies, and red mashed potatoes! OMG DELISH!!!!! If you love live music and good food this is the place to be! The atmosphere is very chill, and the service is good too!

I have never eaten here before. I don't think I will either. This place is like a concentration camp. Once you're in, you're not leaving and if you do leave, you cannot get back in. I paid for a ticket at your venue and you're going to tell me I can't go outside and have a cigarette, or get a fresh breath of non-vomit air? How inconvenient when I'm trying to enjoy myself. So I just smoke one inside because I'm a huge badass. But seriously, everyone does it. This place is always full of annoying fan girls and guys who have bills on their winter hats. I avoid this place unless someone I truly enjoy listening to is playing. I've seen Every Time I Die, Jack's Mannequin, and most recently The Starting Line. I can say I enjoyed attending but I only enjoyed who played. I groan every time I see a band I listen to is scheduled to play there. I've never tried the food there but I'm sure it's great. Other than that MAKE SURE a band you truly enjoy is playing because the people at the House of Blues, whether an employee or another attendee, will ruin most of your good time.

I came here last night with the fiance for some grub after work. The service was great, but the food was "meh." Typical bar food. In fact, I was actually surprised in the lack of variety. For a place like House of Blues, I expected a little bit more creativity. Unfortunately, there was only your typical bar fare....calamari, spinach dip, pulled pork sandwich, a typical burger, cobb salad, etc......really lackluster. Definitely don't come here for the food. There was supposed to be jazz music at 7 pm, and by the time we left at 7:45....still no jazz. So I can't comment on that. Won't be back.

I would never go here unless the music was good-as far as the food goes, eat first!

Had a great time tonight. The music was good and my family thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.

Brunch was sub par. My mom came to town and has always wanted to attend. We anticipated more of a performance based theme for the Sunday Gospel, however we received a self-serving, egotistical, one-man performance in the name of the lord. Wouldn't attend again. Left half way through. Buy the CD and don't waste your money on brunch.

I like this venue as it is small and intimate. Myself and four friends attended a concert here last night. There are two bars inside the venue, which is convenient and they have liquor and a good selection of beers. Bartenders were great and accommodated my request for a bailey's and coffee even though they had to go downstairs to get the coffee for me. There are also chairs in the back and tables to sit which is awesome if you don't feel like standing all night. If you want to shake your money maker you can go up close to the stage and dance or hang back and still enjoy a conversation in the bar area. Overall, I was really happy with the experience, the setup, and the acoustics in the venue.

I traveled to Chicago to see Needtobreathe at the House of Blues in July. The theater is beautiful! I loved the setup and decor. I had been told about the venue from others who had seen shows there and raved about it. They were not wrong. I especially liked the staff! The security staff for the show were actually friendly and answered all our questions. The bartender even delivered my food to the front of the stage so I wouldn't lose my place! No other HOB I've been to has been so nice. I would definitely love to return.

Went here for a concert. The atmosphere was nice but everything on the inside was extremely overpriced. The music was great and the dance floor had great easy access to it. Would come back for a good artist but would not buy anything inside.

The House of Blues Back Porch Stage serves up music Tuesday through Sunday. We were there for the music only, not to gnosh on their weak sauce Late Night Menu. B1G T1ME (sic), a Tom Waits Tribute Band that yes, puts "1's" in place of the "I's", was the attraction. "Step right up, step right up folks.." We wandered in and you kind of just seat yourself. Service here all around is laissez faire and done without much care for the customer. It took our waitress about 4 passes by our table to even glance at us to take our first drink order. Also, a glass of half-drunken water from the party before us was left on our table near the menus. (The glass at HOB is half empty and definitely half-assed.) HOB, being a Louisiana-themed establishment I imediately asked our waitress if they had bottles of Abita or Shiner Bock. She said no, and then let on that she basically hated her job, which was apparent by the poor service the rest of the night. The two "Craft Brews" that HOB Back Porch serves are (wait for it.....) Sam Adams and Blue Moon. Apparently someone at HOB HQ has not gotten the "craft brew" memo that microbrewing has taken gigantic leaps since 1992! My friend got the Lychee-Grapefruit martini which was fragrant and tasty. But again, where are the Hurricane-themed drinks HOB? The Back Porch is nicely decorated and I really do like the faux folk art and white bas reliefs of blues musicians. Big Time wasn't bad, but they should've taken a cue that the one song from Waits' killer album "Bone Machine" had the crowd in ecstasy. Nope- no cue taken- they decided to put the crowd to sleep and it thinned out quickly. But the tourists and people that were there to see the band were nearly catatonic anyway. This show would've killed at an indie rock club that serves Shiner Bock (*cough Empty Bottle), but at HOB Back Porch it was tepid. And making the earth-rumbling music of Mr. Tom Waits tepid is quite a feat! The Late Night Menu was laughable. Again, we did not partake, but it looked about as ambitious as TGI-Fridays appetizer menu. "What do you expect from a chain?" There, I beat you to the easy punch. I don't expect a lot, actually. Small touches like serving beer and food from the Region of the U.S. that is being portrayed and pilfered just seems like such an easy "win" for the House of Blues. There's my Memo to Corporate; because I really do think it wouldn't take much for the Back Porch to move from half assed to kick ass.

I've not had a bad experience on the Back Porch. I like hearing live music; regardless of the genre, while I dine. In fact I would probably come here more, but I'm kind of wrapped up in trying new places. I think the menu is broad and has some good options. Ribs? Yes please. Cornbread? Of course. Long Island? Duh.

Went to a concert here last Thursday and the headliner went on about 2 hours late, but thankfully blues guitarist Jimmy Burns was there. The crowd seemed to care less about the opener on stage, but he was amazing. After each song he would tell a story and it literally felt like I was the only one giving him the time of day. Some of the happy hour attendees here were typical self-absorbed professionals in the area, but I expected that given the location. The sound system is well matched to the size of the stage, which is very small. I like hearing live music in a small setting and this place feels right. I hope to come back and here some live blues again sometime in the near future.

Urgh, Stay. Away. We came here for a Friday night date -- some dinner and blues music. Yeah, I know there are 'real' blues places in Chicago, but many of them don't serve dinner and we thought it might be a nice change... Wrong. The restaurant and menu looked nice, but that was the end of the good stuff. The chairs where all wobbly and sticky. I changed chairs twice, and finally gave up, reconciling myself to the gross sticky feel. Heard two customers around me complain of the same thing. The shrimp appetizers were terrible, clearly not fresh and tasting of inky aquarium (if you had bad shrimp you know the taste I'm referring to). Against my better judgment I was hungry and still ate a few. The "almond tilapia" with crab meat was bland and gross, as was my boyfriend's fillet mignon. Both entrees were served with severely undercooked tasteless green beans and fairly decent mashed potatoes. My iced tea consisted of syrup on the bottom of the glass and tap water on the top. No thank you. And for this disgusting food we paid a total of $85 with tax and tip!! Argh!!!! I really shouldn't have had those shrimp, because I got sick almost immediately after we got home. Worst of all, the "live music" was more than an hour late -- unacceptable when people are making dinner reservations with music in mind. And when the "band" finally arrived, it was a bored and listless dude whispering tiredly into the microphone. We left after one song, having given up on this place once and for all. How terrible. Let me repeat, stay away, unless you're a tourist in town who wants to experience the city's "blues" without actually leaving the safe womb of the downtown. And even then, walk a few extra blocks to one of the more decent places.

"Come see my friends play Thursday Night at HOB, they're a folksy American band from Tennessee so I'm shouting out to all my Chicago peeps to see who's in!" That was the email I got from Brandy and I was all like, "Oh, I'm so totally in!" Her friends were cute, and I don't know what I thought "folksy Americana" was but it sounded better than country, which is actually what they were. The bar service was fine and we orderd some food from the late night bar menu but the ice cream was no longer available after 10 p.m. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't ice cream a little easier to throw into a dish than a whole breakfast burrito? I don't know. The country band was fun for a bit but what made the night most interesting was wondering if the ceiling would cave in on us. Upstairs on the main floor a Spanish rock band called Panda was getting the kids pumped and their jumping up and down literally made the ceiling shake. I'm sure it's designed to do that but it was so unnerving. Heather and I reminded each other of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood show we were at in 1984 at the Bismark hotel when we felt the floor collapse beneath us. Good times for sure.
