I love this place. The Mexican breakfast options are by far the best choices. Chilaquiles Mexican Style, please! The service is always good. The only reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5 is that the place is just a little run down and could use a good update and scrubbing.

This place is just OK. Some waiters are really nice and on-point, while others are rude and slow (in an otherwise empty restaurant). Most of the food is pretty mediocre, unless you are really hungry. They do give very generous portions. The only redeeming menu items are the pancakes and milkshakes, which are amazing. The price for the food is not great.. you pay way too much for the quality you get. However, again, they do give you a lot of it. Overall the pancake house has a sort of grimy and outdated atmosphere to it. I would not go there with a date or go for a nice meal. Only come here of you are very hungry and would rather eat something other than fast food. Or for the pancakes and milkshakes (yum).

If I could give negative stars, I would, which breaks my heart, because I have been going to this place since it was built. First off, the place is filthy - from the tables to the cutlery, it was just gross! After they "cleaned" the table, we went at it again ourselves with wet napkins. My daughter needed to use the bathroom, but opted to wait until we got home. Why there was a line of people waiting to get in is beyond me. It was moderately busy - it was late Sunday morning, after all - but there were plenty of empty tables and booths. It took almost half an hour just to get our order taken, and then it took equally as long (or longer) to get the food. Seriously, it was an order of buttered noodles, three orders of Easy Mac, a toasted bagel, and an oatmeal. If I didn't have 2 hungry teenagers and 2 hungry tweens to feed before I had to go to work, I would have just left. Only after talking to the manager did our food come up, but it STILL took 10 more minutes. I still had to get everyone home, get changed, and get to work. I barely made it in time (I literally had 2 minutes to spare!). I hate to say it, Golden Nugget, but never again.

Overall it's a good Nugget! We go there for breakfast or dinner. Good for a night when you just don't want to cook. I will say the breakfast items are usually better than the dinner. Chicken and waffles! This is not a five star fancy restaurant. It's a Nugget! 24 hour diner. So think of it that way when you go. Good for kids. They have good specials and the service is usually acceptable. Recommended! Mmm pie!

Think they have a lot of nerve raising prices again and still expect waitresses to get tipped the same. The food is lack luster and you can get better food at other restaurants for less money. RIPOFF!!

Came here for brunch and had the bacon cheeseburger on French bread (I think it was French bread). Anywho, it was really good! It's quite large, can totally be shared or cut in half to save the rest for later. It came with fries, your choice of regular cut or curly. I also ordered clam chowder for $1 extra dollar, but the clam chowder was nothing special. The service was good, got a seat right away, prices are decent, and they even have their own parking lot. I also like that they use quality ingredients and that they're open 24/7.

I have been going here since the 1990's. Great food and freshly prepared. Coffee is good as well. We went there for Sunday breakfast last week. The Greek omelette was big and delicious. Lots of spinach and Feta cheese. Plenty of food. Their specials are usually very good. Service is friendly and good.

I have occasional bouts of insomnia. Let me just say, it's uncommon for Jason and me to suffer from it at the same time; BUT, it does happen and when it does... We usually go to Snap Fitness on Irving Park. The gym is an excellent way for me to burn energy, stop thoughts from racing inside my head and clear my mind from whatever is preventing me from sleeping. The Golden Nugget is a few blocks away and open 24 hours. About twenty minutes into our workout, we start to develop an appetite. Against our better judgement, I'll call The Golden Nugget and place an order for pick up. It's usually 2 orders of French toast and one side of sausage. The toast is thick bread dipped in batter made from fresh eggs and half & half cream then baked, served with whipped butter and maple syrup on the side. I always get the Six Wedges and only eat three while Jason eats the rest with his order. He flip flops between the Six Wedges and the Very Berry (seasonal fruit with whipped cream) French toast. They don't have turkey bacon or sausage so it's about the only time I eat sausage made from a pig. It tastes really good and our dog loves it too!

The egg white omelette first off is expensive and on top of that they cook it with tons of butter. Obviously if someone's ordering an egg white omelette with spinach they don't want to fatten it up with tons of butter. The place is a dive. $30 for two people to eat breakfast that pretty much sucked. No thanks. Never again.

I went here yesterday and the pancakes are huge and made from scatch and all food is made fresh. We got a great deal $6.99 for 2 Large fluffy pancakes, 2 pieces of bacon or sausage, with eggs and hash browns. The staff is very friendly and our waitress was very professional and knowledgeable about the food. There is a VARIETY of foods on the menu which is probably 12 pages.

I don't get this place at all. It's definitely a dive sort of dinner, with super outdated, grimy looking decor. However, their prices are that of a trendy restaurant with fresh ingredients. You can't have it both ways. Have better tasting, fresh food if you want to charge such steep prices! Needless to say, I won't be back.

Don't quite understand how 3 1/2 star restaurants are always so busy!!! We were stuck traveling for a few hours and settled for this place. Should've been a little more patient in finding another spot. Spinach and Mushroom omelette was overcooked, how can anyone mess up breakfast foods?!?!

  • Vannesa S.

I had to walk out of this place with my mom & baby brother. We waited 20 min & no one ever came to ask if we wanted something to drink, & I would understand if they where busy but they weren't.

Good Eggbeater spinach and cheese omelet with side of cinnamon pancakes split between my friend and I... we took home half the omelet and 2/3 of the huge double thick pancakes. With coffee the total was just under $20. Waiter was very attentive and informative. Decorations for Halloween were cute.

I only gave one star, otherwise i could not post this review. I have not been to this particular golden nugget since moving to this neighborhood. This morning I decided to go and have breakfast. I "accidentally" walked in the side door by the outdoor patio and the girl at the front door made a snarky comment to me about it. I didn't take that too personal since I was hungry. Sat down at 9:23 am. At 9:38, nobody had been over to get me coffee or anything. I was sitting right by the front and 7 employees were just sitting and standing together chatting. I have pics of these lazy people and will be adding these pics so the management can see who they are. i kept looking at them trying to get their attention. They just looked at me, and then looked away. I got up, went to the front and told them that I had been waiting for over 10 minutes and the dumb girl at the front said nothing. She just stared at me as she picked her food out of her teeth. Not even an apology. Lazy people who want $15 minimum wage? These folks certainly do not deserve it, nor have they earned it. I left hungry.

I went on a busy Sunday morning by myself, sat at the counter, and was pretty much completely ignored. I always tip extraordinarily well, but I'm guessing the waitress assumed I wouldn't be much fare and decided to spend her time on all of the families dining in. Well, that was her mistake. Took about 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge me and take my drink order. Waitress was abrupt and rude. She barked "Whaddya WANT?" when it was time to order. I wasn't ready yet, so she ignored me for another 20 minutes. Aside from that, the food wasn't actually any good. The 'new recipe' for the biscuits and gravy clearly came out of an old bag, and the biscuits were overcooked. The apple juice tasted like high fructose water. I don't think I'll ever go here again. Horrible experience.

I don't expect all that much of a diner. But this place has consistently surpassed my lowest expectations. Breakfast is mediocre at best. The flavor and consistency of everything is second to third rate even for a diner and the pancakes just seem like cardboard sponges. Alps down the street to the east is far better at basic breakfast. Nothing fancy, just competent. The dinner is absolutely atrocious. Can't go back there for that, ever. Everything is breaded and fried and has a stale, been in the freezer for two years flavor. Hence the heavy sauces on everything. Why did I even order the Chili? Do I have a death wish? Had a piece of pie once. The waitress just sort of tossed it on my table and walked away. She knew she was serving me an inedible mash of Crisco and canned deep discount government throwaway, didn't even make it out of the kitchen in prison, cherries. It was mush, stuck to the plate like glue, and you could see the melted grease glisten off what passed for a "crust". Disgusting. I couldn't eat it and gave it back. I mean....pie! It is eaten purely for pleasure. Why serve it at all if this is what you do? They would have done far better by giving you a Dolly Madison pre-packaged at the factory that fell off the Walgreen's delivery truck. The wait staff seems nice. Too bad they have to serve this anti-food.

Old fashioned diner that's good for a hearty brunch, lunch or late night. I usually get the breakfast items: pancakes, waffles, omelette. Generous portions and nothing fancy. It's essentially like IHOP except family owned.

Yummy. I've been to Golden Nugget a few times while visiting my sis in Chicago. It's the perfect kind of greasy spoon with a pretty diverse menu for breakfast. Actually, if I am being fair there really isn't that much grease. I got the french toast with a side of sausage patties. They were the size of the patties in a McDonald's biscuit, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. Not amazing, but definitely good. I love neighborhood spots, so I would go to this place anytime my sister asked.

Came here a few times, but only for brunch. It's a diner so I didnt expect much but every time I eat here, I found the food very yummy! I tried omelets, Benedict and pancakes so far. Service is welcoming and warm as well!

Atmosphere was cold and unwelcoming. Both waitress just sat there on stools discussing how they need to paint their homes and about their "men" at home. Well they sounded more like they were complaining. We sat ourselves down and the waitress that was working the section gave us a look as if we have been annoying her all day. So I would say we are already off to a bad start. She brought us waters and became upset when we asked her if we could have more time to decide what we wanted to dine on. After 8-10 minutes she came back and we have her our orders. Now mind you there are only about 3 tables occupied. We received our food at an ok time and it was ok for a golden nugget. Eggs were a little on the runny side. The waitress did not once ask if we wanted or needed anything else and only passed by once the entire time to refill my drink. The only time she spoke to us was to hand us out check and she just made a statement about the weather being hot and walked away.. Probably trying to get a tip out of us.. And yes out of my generosity I did give her a 15% tip only because I believe that it was the right thing to do. Well there you have it. I won't ever return to this location again.. Ever.

I am updating my review. The restaurant has gotten much more delicious and the prices are fair. Their specials are amazing. I totally go for their Boneless Chicken Wings. They have the 12 piece order for 5.99. That's equal to about 50 cents a piece and they are good to me.

The ultimate in dive-y and diner-y! The atmosphere is summed up in "diner" and/or "dive", and the food is about the same. The pancakes are a bit greasy, but are perfect after a hangover! The chocolate chip ones are pretty good, though. The best thing I ever had here was the turkey club. It's actually one of the better turkey clubs I've had before. This specific location is dingy and dirty compared to the other Irving Park location.

OK food.. OK service.. i usually order the steak omelet with the breakfast potato chunks.. they make it pretty good here.. oh and their pancakes is not bad either.. its not the best tasting food around but once it a while its not bad.

I used to like this place but one bad customer service experience trumps all good ones. We asked for 4 people and a hgh chair. Why would the hostess sit us where our waitress said we could not sit because of the high chair?? Talk about bad communication. She was very rude about it. Then they move us to another table without bringing us our coffee and tea. Then they tell us to move again because the table we are sitting at is for five. Why would they put us at another table we can't sit at???? Never going here again. We left! Bad waitressing and horrible internal communication. The food is not that great anyways. Save a trip and your money!

"Toast" of the Town: French Toast! With a side of Toast! PS LOVE THEIR TOAST My daughter (and I) have eaten here since about 2006 and she wants everyone to know about the good food at GNug. Bring your kids. The wait staff is always nice to us, extremely pleasant. The crabby review writers need to check their manners (and attitude) when in the company of others. Thank you for reading this Yelp.

BEST PANCAKES IN THE WORLD. Believe me I have tried them all over and the Nug's are second to my deceased Grandmother's who made the real BEST. Good for you, Golden Nugget, what's your secret? Service can be awful, or fantastic. This trip I went three times and it was fantastic twice, and fine the other time.

Food- wide variety. typical. breakfast classics, combo deals, south of the border, sandwiches and whatnot. but no eggs benedict regularly here. booooo. bf was able to order it as a special-- and there's a reason why it's not regularly on the menu. totally overcooked the eggs that were supposed to be poached and his hollandaise sauce was cold and thickened. yuk. but their waffles have never disappointed me. hashbrowns? never bad but nothing special. never burnt bloody the way ihop loves to serve em i think that pretty much sums up the food though. never bad, but never great. which is acceptable, since they cater to night owls like me with 24hr service. service- typical breakfast diner- nonexistent unless you have an endless coffee cup. prices- higher than they used to be, but fair. i'd rather pay a little more and have food i can eat. (again. ihop has been failing miserably with serving undercooked/overcooked/crisped/inedible food). overall, this place gets the job done. but definitely no walker brothers in my book.

I went to this Golden Nugget today and I was VERY disappointed with the service and the food. I typically go to the Golden Nugget on Lawrence near Damen, and I LOVE THAT ONE--the food is always good and the service is good too---so I THOUGHT that this one on Irving Park would be just as good...I WAS WRONG!!!! The pancakes were TERRIBLE!! They did not look anything like the photos on the menu (which were normal looking pancakes like the delicious ones they serve on Lawrence)---the pancakes were the thickest (about 2 inches thick each), nastiest pancakes I'VE EVER HAD!! They tasted like raw dough on the inside. When I asked the waitress to bring me out some that were more like the advertised menu photo pancakes--she said she will have them to make thin pancakes and she will bring them back "HOWEVER THEY COME OUT!" She was sooo RUDE! And sure enough, when she brought them back out, they were the same HUGE, thick, raw, nasty pancakes. The waitress even ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THEY WERE JUST THE SAME!!!! She saw that I didn't eat them and just acted like it was not a problem or her concern and came and threw down our bill and said have a nice day!! NEVER AGAIN AT THIS LOCATION!!!!!!!!!!

***Warning: Dirty Restrooms*** Anyway. I'm on the road, and I get hungry, so I stop at this Golden Nugget. And LORD, did I have trouble. What really irked me was their bathroom. How can a business let their own bathroom get so dirty. If it were me that's the FIRST thing I'd clean, especially for a restaurant. Besides that? The service is hideous. I made a double order of biscuits and gravy. She only brought the first order instead of both at once, so when I finished the first order I had to WAIT while she brought the next one. THEN I ordered another orange juice. She didn't bring it until I was practically done eating. The service was so bad that I didn't even want to bother with dessert, so I said that I didn't want the OJ, and she says, "Oh, I already charged you for it." Yeah, I know what your thinking. Thought about making a scene. Not worth it. I just threw my arms up in the air, paid my bill, and left. Look. Maybe she's just a bad apple, but I gave this a one star based on the bathroom ALONE.

I've been coming here for years with a group I belong to; we meet in the back room late at night. It's a local chain late night diner that makes the food from scratch (no canned fruit compote; the oj isn't from concentrate; the pancakes aren't from a mix). The service is friendly; they'll remember your name and what you usually get. The prices have gone up some over the years, but the onion rings are still less than 3 bucks and are a steal. (They're the smooth type and they're consistently good.) If you look really hard you can find a breakfast entree for less than six, but basically you're in the same price range as an IHOP or Denny's. Of course, since the food is from scratch you'll have much better luck customizing it, and the staff here will actually remember if you order butter on the side, etc. Lots of vegetarian breakfast options with no customization required, assuming you eat eggs. The omelettes are consistently good. There are a couple of Mexican type breakfast entrees (chilaquiles American style or original, etc.) which are good and just a huge amount of food. Some of the specialty pancakes (the multigrain and the chocolate) are also particularly notable, and the milkshakes are good. Keep in mind that if you get coffee they won't leave a carafe so keep the waitress happy if you're planning on staying for a while. Tiny parking lot but we've never had trouble finding parking late at night.

  • Kevin M.

Great service, and food is decent if not spectacular. The menu is pretty wide, far more so than you would expect from a diner. A decent option if you are with a group of people who can't agree on what food they would like--they at least attempt a wide variety of dishes. All the ones I tried were actually pretty good.

Golden Nugget is a facet of Chicago living for me. From the days of late night haunts when you could still enjoy your coffee and cigarettes to going for a basic, no frills meal as I got older, Golden Nugget has fit the bill. Don't think for a second that you're going to be blow away (with the noted exception of the french toast) GN is not that kind of place; it is a place where I have found fairly consistent quality and quantity of food. That being said, let me start off by saying that I had the french toast for the first time- whoa. Let me repeat that: whoa. I gobbled- no, INHALED two wedges before I remembered I wanted to take a photo of the meal. It WAS that good. The best in the area? Probably not, but I'm feeling safe in saying its some of the better french toast you'll find. As for everything else, think IHOP in terms of what you'd get. Their pancakes are pretty darn good- they're made from scratch. Their lunch and dinner menus are average/better-than-average. Also to note: it had been about a year since I last went to a GN and I was surprised that they replaced their near-trademark 2-sided mini-poster menu for a more colorful and visually attractive multi-page menu (see photo.) Oh well. The times they are a-changin'. As long as the french toast doesn't, "I'll be back."

    (4)
  • Malana W.

If you've been to one GN you've been to them all? Not true! There is definitely decent service at this location but I'm not going to lie the only reason I'd ever go to this particular GN is to covet the house that is next door. It is absolutely and utterly gorgeous and has been there long before the GN even existed. If only I had a million dollars right? The rest of the patrons at this location seriously just creep me out beyond words. Hence the reason that I'd rather hit up the GN further down Irving instead of this one.

Hell yeah! A real diner with real diner food, awesome. Sometimes you just get that late-night craving for a grilled cheese, fries and a shake. Golden Nugget delivers. No frills, no claims to be what it's not. Vanilla shake was enough for three people, huzzah! Next time perhaps I will try their pancakes.

Every now and then I just get a craving for diner food! The Golden Nugget has never been the highest quality in my mind but they are strategically located around he north side of the city so I am never too far from one! I am very fortunate that this particular location is just walking distance from my my living room! It gets kudos for that point alone!. Doe the Nugget have the best diner food around you ask? It is not even close. Over the years they have drastically improved their quality and it is pretty darn good but it is far from the best. I like the fact that I can go here any time that I wasn't because they are all open 24 hours! We went here for dinner one night and it really did hit the spot. I felt kind of bad for our server because it looked like he was the only one on duty that night. Th restaurant was not all that busy but he did a decent job taking care of us. The last ime I visited a Nugget for dinner, I was GREATLY disappointed. I was rather pleased after my meal this time because it was really pretty tasty!..

I was a little tired when my friend and I came here for a late night snack. I learned a couple of things: 1) Denver omelette doesn't come with cheese. Wtf. 2) Best pancakes...ever!! Typical greasy spoon with typical greasy spoon prices. Though most Midwesterners tend to disagree...it is a step up above Waffle House. I hate to say it but so true.

Have to say, I quite enjoy Golden Nugget for our breakfast excursions. It is very close our home, and the food and prices are okay. I usually order their corned beef skillet, not on the menu, but they are very much obliged to make it for me. I order it with the usual veggies and cheese on top, and along with their salsa, it is quite delicious. My wife either orders their French Toast or some breakfast entree with their pancakes. I have to say their pancakes are pretty good! It very light, fluffy, and quite tasty! I definitely recommend their pancakes. Overall, okay food, okay prices, okay service.

so cheap! i came here for breakfast on a monday morning because i missed my train out of the city. they had a breakfast special where i got two pancakes, two sausage links, eggs, and hash browns all for five bucks. what a steal! everything was average, which is fine because that's what i expected. actually the pancakes were pretty good. the hash browns and eggs were both totally bland. but nothing a little pepper can't fix, and much better than if they had been overly salted or something. i guess the reason i'm so optimistic about this place is that the people were so nice. i had a really sweet waitress and even my cashier was friendly, in a cool way, not a sweet way. seemed like there were a lot of regulars. basically, i just don't think this deal can be beat.

I lived in Chicago for 5 years, about 10 years ago. And while the city is filled with culinary delights in every corner, often, I just long for the experience of going to the Golden Nugget--either on a Sunday morning after church, or on a Friday or Saturday night after a night out with friends barhopping. I think I've eaten at all of the Golden Nuggets, on my most recent visit to Chicago, it just happened to be this one that we landed at. First--there was a parking lot. As a respite from the on-street meters, this was helpful. Love the pancakes. I got the Cinnamon Swirl Pancakes as a side order with my omelet. The omelet was great. Stuffed full of ham and cheese, not as greasy as I used to remember them being. And, I was happy that they let me try the cinnamon swirl pancakes as a side with the omelet. These were sweet, fluffy, and delicious. The waitress was accomodating of our party of four adults and two young children. The coffee was good, hot, and regularly filled. Some of the other reviews pooh-pooh the other patrons, or rate this location as worse service than others. I didn't encounter any of that--and would happily come back here again. Everyone left with a good meal, some leftovers, and were satisfied.

I've been here twice. Once for breakfast and once for dinner. This place is not bad, it's just not any good. It's bland. The food tastes like they made it yesterday and heated it up in the microwave for you once you order. The "hot rolls" were stale, cold bread sticks. The only time I would go back here is if I was absolutely starving at 4:00 am.

Good food - I love most breakfast items there. Hash browns are good, just ask for them extra crispy as sometimes they are soggy with oil. Decent service - coffee is topped off regularly and the waitresses usually are patient and not naggy when it's time to order. Can you tell I eat with and indecisive person all the time? :) Prices a bit high - their specials have good prices though I like coming here for a quick eat.

Although it was a very busy day, we were seated very quickly and the children entertained with the interactive place mat! Crayons and paper work wonders. We all enjoyed our favorite french-toast, crispy bacon and sausage links!!!!!! Yummmy, but my hubby had this enormous round egg, fritata type omelet which tasted okay, but because it was topped with this disgusting orange/yellow cheese that didn't melt but looked hard as a rock yet very pliable just was appetizing at all!!!!!! Sorry hun, should've stuck to our usual!!!!!

This has to be the worst Golden Nugget I've been to. I will stick to going to the other Irving Park location and the Diversey one as well. First off, I got off the train from work and was hungry, so I decided to go in. I enter the location and notice that only people are sitting up at the stool area, and two waitresses who were doing nothing but putting Christmas coloring pages on the wall were arguing on who would be the one to bring me to a table. After they had their scuffle one finally caved in and brought me to sit down at a booth. She brought me some coffee and a menu (a sticky menu as a matter of fact; had syrup on some pages). I knew what I had wanted within 3 minutes of looking at the menu, and it took her 45 minutes to come back and ask if I'm ready. When she comes back, my cup of coffee is empty and she doesn't even offer to refill it up. She goes to the counter and talks with some regulars for another 10 minutes and brings me my appetizer platter along with my dinner at the same time. Then she asks if I want coffee right after! I ask her to bring me coffee, a cup of water and some orange juice; because I knew that if I had not, she would take another 15 minutes to give me something so simple. Once i got my dinner, it felt cold. The service was rude, and I couldn't finish what I had started on. What really surprises me is that this location wasn't busy. No one was in there but the person drinking a cup of coffee talking jibberish and being creepy. He was getting more attention than me from both waitresses, and I refuse to go back to this location. Also the bathrooms smell pretty bad. Pros: By the train station; but you're best off going to Subway or Dunkin Donuts Cons: Rude service Cold food Nonattentive staff

The wait staff here is fun and VERY accommodating! The food is always above par if your in the area and your hungry I would go here and eat some of the best comfort food money can buy

Oh.My.God. Gross. I was okay with it. Mediocre food. Even the crabby, less-than-personable waitstaff. Until I made the mistake of going to the bathroom. If the bathroom is that disgusting, there is no doubt in my mind the food would not be deemed acceptable by the Department of Public Health. Dis.Gust.Ing.

I am still trying to discover my neighborhood and the surrounding areas. If you know me or don't well you will soon find out that I LOVE breakfast. So I was so happy to discover Golden Nugget. Pros: Its close...I walked Quick...close your eyes food is there Cheap...not breaking the bank Coffee...mmmmmm good! Cons: Let me get back to you on that one

This is my home away from home, and place where I go when I am homesick. When I am too lazy to make my own poached eggs, I head over and let Judy or Michelle or any of these sweethearts bring it to me. The waitresses that work here are the best in the City. Not only are they exceptional at what they do, they are kind and considerate, too. Michelle even let me use her cell phone once when mine died. The other morning, Judy listened to me ramble on about something stupid and she gave me good advice. The manager always stops by our table and shakes my husband's hand, and then tells him "how lucky he is to have a beautiful wife." They all know that I struggle with my weight, and am on Weight Watchers, and they usually steer me toward the Hi-Lo (2 poached eggs, fruit, wheat toast) instead of my favorite Tiger Omelet (3 eggs, cheese, green pepper, onions, hashbrowns, pancakes). BUT, they never judge me when I really need my pancake fix, either. And by the way, this Golden Nugget serves the BEST PANCAKES I have ever tasted. Better than my Mom's even!

This is my regular Golden Nugget, and after my poor experience not even being able to get past the "door gauntlet" experience at Alps West, I went back to the Nugg at the corner of Tripp and Irving Park. Nothing like the old standby, right? I can't complain. It's always good and always consistent. I had pancakes, bacon, and hashbrowns. I typically have the turkey BLT club. Either is a good choice. For me, the ladies are always timely on refilling my drinks and paying attention to my somewhat specific orders. I like the Nugg. That's the way it is.

And then you have the best golden nugget: When, compared to the others, is luxurious... yelp.com/biz ... the cleanest one, the prettiest one, and where you can actually count on good servers, cept the lady with the greasy hair and man gut....and the old white haired lady... see if Teresa is there -she's really attentive. 1/5/08 its been a LONG time since they redid the menus at the nugget, i dont know if its chain-wide, but the menu at #9(irving/tripp) was all looking like the IHOP menus. its hard to read, and very annoying with the ANGUS BEEF stick in each picture of something from cow. somethings are better left unchanged.

how do I always stumble into this place ? I guess it's the $5 meal.. HELLO! And the food is good! Hot! staff is attentive.. just a great neighborhood diner that will probably be here forEVER .. my kids have eaten lunch here and it was good .. the breakfast is ALWAYS good and it's probably well worth more than the $5 for breakfast that I typically spend on my full meal with pancakes or french toast.

As far as Golden Nuggets go, this is one of the better ones. The staff actually understand what you're ordering, so if it ends up wrong, they don't argue with you. Personally, I think that they have really good breakfasts, and have forever! Great texmex skillet... MMMM! Eggs are always perfect! Really no complaints!

    (4)
  • James T.

There French toast is probably hands down the best thing to get there. The hash browns are good but really depends on who is the cook. Pancakes are light and fluffy paired with a hot chocolate w/ whip cream and a cookie on top is greatness. The taco breakfast is another favorite of mine and so are the skillets. Marie is the best server there btw. Cheap eats and great after drinking.

  • Clover D.

Terrible and over priced. Cheap food for really high cost. Crabby waitstaff. The owner is a JERK. The coffee is terrible. Dont waste your money here. Try some other places in the area like the CURIO CAFE! The exception is 3am dining. Its the only place open. I am a recovering Nugget patron who spent a few too many years in the back room smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee.... Since the ban of smoking- its really a lame place to hang.

BEST. FRENCH. TOAST. OF. MY. LIFE. Period. I've been going to the GN since I was a 5-year old kid with my family. We used to walk there on Sundays for brunch after Sunday mass. I don't remember ever ordering anything but the french toast. Why bother when you find such a winner? No other place compares. I've tried many, just to prove that no other french toast is as good as that of the GN. Pros: 24 hour Carry out Always serves breakfast Great hangover/comfort food Can seat yourself Great place to people watch Cons: Dirty Service is not the greatest Once found a huge black ant in my maple syrup

  • Tom Z.

I had breakfast here. I decided to try the french toast based on other reviews. I thought it was very good. My problems were with the rest of the breakfast. I ordered my eggs scrambled and they were completely mixed, there were whites that weren't blended. I also had hash browns, the problem was they weren't that crispy. The bacon had a good flavor and was cooked just right. The price was pretty high $12 for breakfast with a glass of milk! The interior was pretty clean, but with a little old styling (OK with me for a breakfast place, but not for the higher price of the meal) I am sure the other food is good, but the higher price may keep me away.

This is a standard 24 hour diner. It's clean, affordable, friendly, convenient, and super fast. Plus, Y members get 10 percent off their bill. The good stuff you just can't get enough of : meat lover's skillet, pancakes, chocolate pancakes (made with chocolate batter and then smothered in chocolate chips), chicken tenders, hash browns, eggs, and chocolate milkshakes.

I don't know when Justin M. goes to the Golden Nugget in Old Irving Park, but I was there last night with my 5-year-old and the other patrons were either elderly or young families. Some of our neighbors were sitting the next booth over and I find if amusing that a lawyer, a sound guy, and their two Polo-clad kids would be considered "ghetto." Our service last night was a little slow, but that was rather unusual for the Golden Nugget in my experience. I love their pancakes and they make a mean chocolate milkshake. Also to Justin M. : There's a parking lot in the back.

As Chicagoans say... It is what it is. Or to quote Dennis Green's infamous rant, They are who we thought they were! GN is what it is and who you think they are. It is a 24/7 dinner that provides food which anyone growing up in the diner revival days of the 90s, have come to expect. How about this... don't take your dates here. Don't conduct a business meeting here. Don't propose to your girlfriend here. Don't use the bathroom here. Don't bother coming in here if you are an iPhone user type. Do come in here with a group of friends to just talk over coffee. Stop by for a midnight bite to eat after a night of festivities. Do stay awhile and converse. Europe has cafes and people sit and talk for hours and hours. They spend their time enjoying the company. Coffee is coffee but they charge you for the experience. I would like to equate the GN and other similar establishments as our American equivalent to the European cafe, except being that we are American, our experience comes with a side of deep fried potatoes. Sit a while and enjoy your company. Enjoy life. Food is blah. Cheap and plentiful there are seemingly a GN on every street corner in Chicago. It is always open. Better than fast food but not a restaurant, GNs are 24/7 diners. If you do choose to go in. I do like the texas chicken and the chorizo and eggs. Waffles as always good as well.

I remember coming here every Sunday morning on the way to church when I was little. We became friends with some of the waiters and the manager over time. The food is good, and the staff are really nice. They even sang me happy birthday on my birthday and gave me pie. I'd really recommend this place and go back there anytime we're around.

I used to live across the street from there as a kid, I watched them build it ( in the mid 70's )and it has always been a favorite of mine.. Even though I do not live in Old Irving park anymore, I still come over for breakfast as often as I can.. I love their French toast and their pancakes are great. My son loves their meatloaf lol when I was a teen I used to love their tacos with rice & beans. deeeeeelicious! and would go there alot to do my homework and have a choc milkshake and fries, they always let me sit there and never kick me out. the staff is always great.. I knew the waitresses they had back in the mid to late 80's and early 90's they were the best!

This might sound weird, but in my opinion, this is the best restaurant in Old Irving Park. I've never been to Smoque, but if you check out my other reviews, this is the highest rating I've given to any of the ones I've been too. I guess one could say if you've been to a Golden Nugget, you've been to them all. That statement is fairly true. However, I feel like this Golden Nugget is one step ahead of them all. The staff is brilliant. I've never seen a collection of individuals like the ones they have at this little joint. I would go for a cup of coffee just to dialogue with those strange souls. Furthermore, what an audience this place draws from the nearby Y! Some of the most journeyed minds in Chicago find themselves residing in the Irving Park Y and then dining in this G-Nug. If you've never eaten here... Oh! How you must!

I love this place....the pancakes are yummy, I always get a side order no matter what I get for my main dish. They make the best mexican breakfasts, that rival the authentic cooking of my mother. Try the Mexican style Chilaquiles, (salsa soaked tortilla strips smothered in cheese and then mixed with scrambled egg and chorizo). The wraps are a decent size an very satisfying. I love this place the prices are just right and the service is excellent and very friendly.

This weekend, the boyfriend and I braved the sub zero temps to head out for some pre Super Bowl brunchie brunch at one of our favorite places. Why the Golden Nugget? It has that diner feel, like a Denny's or a Big Boy, but with much cheerier employees. The food is cheap, hot and fast and you rarely have to wait for a table - even at 10:30am on a Sunday! My man can have his Denver omelet, I can have my pancakes, and we can slowly wake up over bottomless cups of coffee. The manager of this restaurant is super friendly and the waitstaff is wonderful. We were there on Halloween and everyone was dressed up! (We were shown to our seat by a very convincing Dracula!) On this particular Sunday, everyone was dressed in their finest Bear get up. They were raffling off two Urlacher dolls and an Urlacher jersey. The cost to enter the raffle? NOTHING. The manager bought the Bear souvenirs just for the heck of it. I understand at Easter they do the same thing with candy-and-chocolate-loaded Easter baskets. Annette is our regular server. She doesn't mind if I add bananas and walnuts to the pancakes in my 'Country Breakfast' and she knows that I like a tall glass of OJ mixed with cranberry juice. We always see a lot of young families here (no doubt the cheap eats and 'fun themes' bring them in) and we can't wait to someday do brunch at the Nugget with our own kiddies. (Did I just say that?? Hrm. Must be somethin' in those pancakes...)

Okay--this is your average diner, with your way above average food quality and service. They offer some great specials and the food is always delicious, the staff is so attentive and polite and fun. It's not the signature room, but when is the last time you saw a chicken fried steak for $9 with drink, salad or soup, plus a generous dessert at Signature Room? Well, probably never as they don't have chicken fried steak--but, if they did, it would not be $9 LOL. Can't beat this little joint for a really reasonable meal and excellent service. Now, I do want to say, that I have eaten at other Golden Nugget's and had a much different experience--they are all owned by the same owner, but their food, service and cleanliness vary by location, and drastically. I have watched the manager of this restaurant inspect each plate that leaves that kitchen, on more than one occasion, sending back meals that he doesn't find acceptable--think he runs a tight ship. Now, according to a review here by Candice W, he hasn't spent much time looking at the bathrooms as she wigged out about the cleanliness of the bathroom--I haven't been in the bathroom as that is never my favorite thing to do when I go to a restaurant is lounge in the bathroom, but I am just speaking of the dining experience, not the bathroom experience. :-) Enjoy! But, maybe go to the bathroom before you leave home. He he

Thanks to Lara W.'s review, we went here during my world's worst ever hangover. Ever, ever, ever. Seriously. Just as we expected--fabulous, heart-clogging food, staff members in Cubs shirts saying stereotypical waitress phrases like, "Top off your coffee, huh?" I'm an anti-booth person because I'm paranoid about germs, but even the booths here didn't seem like they needed more than a quick coating with Purell gel. Get the eggs here, and, even though the menu is big, I wouldn't recommend steering too far off the beaten trail. I ordered the biscuits with gravy--which even my waitress warned me against, but, hey, I'm a Southern boy, and I needed my gravy. My partner got an omelette dish, which proved to be much yummier than mine.

Trust me, I love Golden Nugget and everything it stands for...but this G-Nugg is a bit too ghetto for me. The staff, the customers...shady as hell! There is absolutely no parking around there, and the food is decent. Ive had bad pancakes, but very good french toast. Does that make it right? I don't think so..... 4th FAV!

I would have to agree with the previous review about "Best French Toast Ever". I absolutely love this Golden Nugget. The service is great, the food is tasty, and you can't beat their prices. Sounds like a winner in my book.

Love is... The Golden Nugget. No really, we have progressed passed acquaintances, into that awkward friendship zone that neither of us is sure we want to leave, and straight into unadulterated PDA grossness love. Oh Golden Nugget, you have stuck by me through thick and thin. I had the worst date of my life in you (no fault of your own to be sure- What self respecting guy eats hash-browns with his fingers?) Even then you reassured me in your delicious country fried steak and gravy that life would be okay once I sloughed off the loser. Today I pronounce my love for you publicly and unabashedly. You made my morning complete with biscuits and gravy and corned beef hash. My heart ran warm with starch and slightly runny eggs just like I like them. All there is left to say now is, Oh dearest Golden Nugget will you marry me? I may not always be faithful, I will probably see other restaurants on the side, but I will always loyally keep you in a special part of my (probably now artery clogged) heart.

WOW lots of 5 stars, I definitely will have to try the french toast next time. I found that my food was just alright when I came here and I had quesadillas. I came late night after a show I went to and it was easy to find a table, the service was just average but the bill was ultra cheap. I wouldn't come back here on a regular basis but if I really really was starving and I was with a bunch of people who couldn't decide on one type of food we'd probably end up here again.

I have been to the other golden nugget on Irving a few times prior to this. This one was cleaner. I ordered my usual, biscuits and gravy with 2 scrambled eggs. It was just as good as I expected it to be, but it wasn't hot. The only thing I could think of is that is sat while my husband's cornbeef hash was cooked because his was steaming hot.

Best place to eat off a hang over. Wide variety of short order food. Patty melt is pretty good. Iced tea tastes funny, I think it's some kind of instant mix. All the waitress are adorably friendly. One of the most generic American dining experiences in the neighborhood and I mean that as a compliment. If the place is ever packed you might want to check out Java Thai one block away.

I was struck by the familial atmosphere of this location. Many people knew each other across the tables and the staff seems to enjoy working there. The food is basic, but they get everything just right. I have to go back there at 2am to see if it's any different that late.

In my short time living here in Chicago, I've become a fan of the "Golden Noun" strings of diners. This one comes out on top simply because I live within walking distance. The waitstaff is super friendly, and the food is darned tasty (cheap too!).

Tonight I had that moment where I realized/accepted that we call in orders so much for carry out that the servers know us by voice. Sweet? I love Golden Nugget for carry out. Our orders are always quick, correct and properly prepared. We are morning fans of the wild west omelet and the breakfast burger steak with the pancakes. Dinner is usually the Patty Melt and the Bacon Mushroom Burger. Sometimes the Sourdough Chicken Melt sandwhich or Meatloaf if we feel like mixing it up! Tip- onion rings are better than the fries! I might have to take Caroline B's suggestion on the milkshake...

This place is mediocre , it has always been mediocre , it will always be mediocre. This place stays alive because it's open 24 hours. I have been here dozens of times because it's open 24 hours. I have been here in the daylight 3 times at the most. The breakfast food is pretty good , if not a little (ok alot) greasy. The simple sandwiches are good as well , like the turkey club and the blt's. Soup is pretty good. Anything for dinner that is cooked is ok at best. My opinion , remove most of the wacky stuff like chicken cordon blue , or lobster thermadore (exaggerating), or whatever insane concoctions the chef thinks he can pull off at 4 in the morning. If they concentrated on the burgers (mediocre) , roast chicken , and other simple stuff . Eventually they would probably get it right.

UPDATE: 6/9/11 Can I just say that I miss this place! I have gone back several times specifically because I love the food. I noticed during my visit last month, the prices have been lowered back to what they were before the increase....or better. --------------- The food is pretty good! Try the tacos or any Mexican dish, you won't be disappointed. The cooks are fast and make your food to order. Theresa is one of the best waitresses here. She's very fast and friendly. There is one other waitress who's just as good. The other waitresses aren't so great, particularly the younger ones. They are VERY slow. They spend more time gossiping than serving the customers. One was openly balancing her checkbook while there were customers waiting to pay for their food. I'm getting a bit annoyed by the prices at this place. A Belgian waffle with 3 pieces of your choice of meat & coffee totals $9.05 after tax. So, you can expect to pay at least $8+ for breakfast per person. That's pretty ridiculous for breakfast food. UPDATE: 2/2008 - I just paid $2.49 for a 16 oz. (Large) cup of Superior Coffee to go. Is it me, or is that expensive?!

this place is awesome for late nights. me and my friend alwyas come here at night and sit here for hours with hot chocolate and just talk. the staff is friendly, attentive and let you sit for hours with just a hot chocolate, instead of hounding you to order more. good menu variety, good prices the only beef i have is that, the waitresses are clueless about vegetarians. when i ask what they recommend for vegetarians, they look like i'm asking them to speak another language. when i ask for a sandwich with "cheese, mayo, and some vegetables" they get soo confused, and they just say "please order off the menu" it is really rude, and frusterating i feel. how hard is it? most of your meals have that, with a burger patty. can you not just take it out? but then they refuse to do that and suggest i order it, and take it out myself. urghs. but still a good place.

I love this place. It's cheap, tasty and fun. I have come in here at 3 in the morning and at 5 in the afternoon the day after new years wanting breakfast. They are always accomdating. I wanted a tuna melt w/o mayo or celery and they made it for me. There is no other place in the world that has ever done that for me! There pancakes are tasty and so is their chicken fried steak. Comfort food is always good.

This place is very inexpensive and offers up some great breakfast food. The wait staff is nice. I cannot speak to too many dishes since I only had the banana pancakes, but they were quite delicious.

RIPOFF!!

I hate to say it but so true.

so cheap! i came here for breakfast on a monday morning because i missed my train out of the city. they had a breakfast special where i got two pancakes, two sausage links, eggs, and hash browns all for five bucks. what a steal! everything was average, which is fine because that's what i expected. actually the pancakes were pretty good. the hash browns and eggs were both totally bland. but nothing a little pepper can't fix, and much better than if they had been overly salted or something. i guess the reason i'm so optimistic about this place is that the people were so nice. i had a really sweet waitress and even my cashier was friendly, in a cool way, not a sweet way. seemed like there were a lot of regulars. basically, i just don't think this deal can be beat.

Better than my Mom's even!

how do I always stumble into this place ? I guess it's the $5 meal.. HELLO! And the food is good! Hot! staff is attentive.. just a great neighborhood diner that will probably be here forEVER .. my kids have eaten lunch here and it was good .. the breakfast is ALWAYS good and it's probably well worth more than the $5 for breakfast that I typically spend on my full meal with pancakes or french toast.

BEST. FRENCH. TOAST. OF. MY. LIFE.

Great diner to have breakfast anytime, day or night. Standard diner fare consistently done fairly well. Have specials all the time to feed you on a budget. Skip the coffee and get it at Dunkin instead.

I love the Golden Nugget. The two times I have been to Chicago we always came to eat here. Never had a bad experience...the food was always yummy. I had the Pancakes and they were good pancakes. Nothing to write home about but, Really nothing bad to say either...good food, great memories, decent prices, good service.

    (4)
  • Justin M.

4th FAV!

  • Bill C.

I would have to agree with the previous review about "Best French Toast Ever". I absolutely love this Golden Nugget. The service is great, the food is tasty, and you can't beat their prices. Sounds like a winner in my book.

I would recommend this place for anyone who has children or who wants to enjoy a nice laid back, delicious breakfast. I just wish it were closer to where I live.
