When I saw it was Asian/Mexican I thought, yeah right....can't perfect either? BUT my husband insisted on a pineapple lemonade. So, I ordered a grilled chicken burrito and he the kung poa chicken.... I will eat my words! They mailed them both! Don't judge a book by it's cover. The place looks like a dive #dinersdrive-insanddives but it's clean and the food is amazing. Try the crab meat rangoons....I'm not going to spoil the surprise! #guyferri find this place!!!!!

Gold Coast is located in the Airport food court in the area where Concourses A, B, and C meet, just after you go through security. You can get the Jumbo Char Dog, which is a Chicago style hot dog (comes on a poppy seed bun, with mustard, neon green relish, onions, a pickle, and peppers). There's a funny sign when you go to order where it says it's basically a crime to put ketchup on a Chicago style hot dog. And before tax, it's like less than $5, which is cheap for airport food. And it tastes pretty good. They also offer bagel sandwiches and Italian beef sandwiches. So why the two stars? Because the customer services sucks. The cashier was unfriendly to begin with and when he gave me my order, he neglected to give me my receipt. When I asked for it, he took it and tried to throw it to me, but it didn't go very far, never reached me, and fell back to his side of the counter. I was so disgusted by this rude behavior. I almost wanted to return my hot dog because I lost my appetite. Customer service here is terrible and I won't eat at Gold Coast again. There are plenty of other options at Midway.

As we went through security to get to our gate at Midway, it dawned on me - after my time in Chicago, I had yet to have an actual Chicago dog! Hungrily, my friend and I browsed the airport and spotted Gold Coast Dogs which seemed promising enough. While my friend got in line at Potbelly Sandwiches, I ordered a Char Dog (Chicago Style) with everything on it. Found a seat, unwrapped the hot dog, bit into it... and was pleasantly surprised. It was WAY better than I expected, especially 1) for an airport food court and 2) for $6 (at LAX, something like this would be $9 at least). I was happy to have finally wrapped my hands around a tasty Chicago dog :)

Based upon the amount of other restaurant choices and the long line at this place, I figured they must be doing something right. I really, really wanted the jumbo char dog or Italian Beef sandwich that everyone else seemed to ordering, but yielded to my healthy side and ordered a turkey burger. I was delicious and reasonably priced.

Located in the B terminal food court right after the TSA checkpoint. Not worse than I expected, already a good sign! The peppers and oil were actually quite good. They didn't overdo the oil and the peppers had a good mix of spice, crunch, and flavor. The downsides were the limp dry beef shavings and the soggy cold roll. I feel like they could have easily done a better job, perhaps if there is another time I'll specifically ask for a toasted roll and hope for the best.

Let me start by saying that I don't usually like hot dogs. I needed a quick bite from Midway and didn't want McDonalds, so I figured I'd give it a try. I got a jumbo charred chilli cheese dog ($6.45), and it was fantastic! Literally the best hot dog I've ever had. I don't usually eat hot dog buns either, but this bun was delicious. The little poppy seeds and the freshness made it very appetizing. It also was pretry easy to eat. It came in a little paper tray wrapped in foil. None of it spilled and my hands were fairly clean after too. If you need some food while waiting for your (most likely delayed) flight, I would highly recommend that you try one of their hot dogs!

Chicago style Hot Dog was what you would expect in an airport. Edible, but nothing to write home about. Had this with a bag of Fritos and a bottle of water. The food, however, is not the reason for the single star. I realize that I should never expect stellar customer service at an airport food place. But this place took the level of exceptionally rude service to a new low. While speaking only Spanish to each other, the only thing said to me by the girl behind the counter was "what do you want?" And the guy on the register only stated the amount due. Maybe this is the extent of their English vocabulary, I don't know. Maybe, even if had been said in a cheerful way it might have been okay. It wasn't. It was expressed in an " I hate my job and I hate my customers" type of attitude. The guy on the register was the worse of the two. I fly through here often, and even though this is usually the place with the smallest line, I will go hungry next time before I eat here again.

    (1)
  • Travis F.

Eh... I had a very mediocre Italian Beef sammich. My wife's chili dog was fair at best. I'd keep walking, this place is not worth the high airport prices.

Mediocre food and terrible customer service. I had a one hour layover at Midway so I was pressed for time. I was pretty hungry since they don't serve food on Southwest flights so I ventured over to the food court. I selected Gold Coast because they seemed to have the shortest line. Now I see why! I got to the front of the line and began to order. The woman cut me off and told me I needed to give my order to another woman who just stood there and stared at me. I ordered a Chicago dog and a bottled water. They asked if I wanted everything on it. I said yes since I'm not picky and I was just hungry, but it would be nice to list what "everything" is so people are aware of what is coming on their hot dog. The hot dog was lukewarm and steamed instead of grilled like I had asked for. It came with onions, relish, peppers, and mustard. The poppy seed bun was good but that was about it. It was a waste of $8 and next time I will either bring something to eat in my luggage or buy chips from Hudson News if I don't have time to eat somewhere else.

Chicago knows their dogs and this is definitely the spot when flying through Midway. They do their Chicago dog right and offer a killer combo deal - killer in value and possibly triple bypass. If you are going to travel, why not seek out and enjoy some local cuisine in the bland ocean of McD and Pizza joints? Until Ohare and Midway open a Giordano's - go here and enjoy.

  • Lily F.

Decent dogs for an airport. Price was about 5 bucks for a Chicago dog. Nothing at all spectacular or worth remembering. The only thing that stands out in my mind about the place was that all of the employees looked like they hated their lives that night. But who can blame them? Working right after Christmas at a crazy busy city.

  • Ruth C.

Two and a half stars. Fairly friendly staff was apologetic about running out of foil. Plenty of seating in the food court area. Didn't find the untoasted rolls too stale, but the jumbo char dog was way tastier than the Polish sausage. Sport peppers, halved tomato slices, mustard, onion, relish on our dogs with the works-- very surprised to see no pickle. Regretted getting the generic chili cheese fries, burps for hours afterward. Next time: bratwurst and a lobster bisque.

Just ate here on a layover between DC and Phoenix...had the Italian Beef, which was pretty good. One previous Yelper didn't like it, but enjoyed his Dorito's...haha. I thought about getting a Chicago Dog...when in Rome, right? But I decided it seemed high considering I like my hot dog plain...so I don't like paying more for toppings I won't be getting. The Italian beef came with peppers, which I declined, but they did give me mayo when I asked. So, it was just meat and bread plus mayo for me. The meat was tender, and I would've enjoyed w/o mayo, but the mayo enhanced the flavor. The bread was tasty but unfortunately soggy. My main issue I had was that I ordered a sweet tea bottle, but when the cashier told me it was over $11, I questioned it. I said $7.19 for sandwich and $2.49 for bottled drink. She said that you got sweet tea, and that is $2.99. I told her I don't want it, and she refunded my $3 and some odd cents. I told her that I didn't need the sweet tea anyway. On principal, I'm not going to pay more for something that said a certain price. I could've said I'll buy a bottled drink and paid the $2.49. Then, after paying, I would've grabbed the sweet tea, and they would've been none the wiser... And I wouldn't have known either. Thirsty, after eating my delicious sandwich on soggy bread, I walked to my terminal gate, stopping for the water fountain on the way.

I wasn't quite sure about tasting such a heavily laden hot dog but I moved pass my fears and bit into that beast of a dog. I must say.....the Chicago Dog is amazing! I'd love to have it again one day when back in Chicago.

    (5)
  • Vinilly W.

Not the best place in the world... Your typical reheated food... Meats can sometimes taste off... Such as the Italian beef which tasted like a soggy cardboard box... Very unpleasant smell... Staff is somewhat ok.

    (2)
  • David N.

Ehhh, I've had better Chicago Dogs in Las Vegas (of course, it is the airport). No "char" whatsoever. Luke warm, and hardly any snap. Weak bun, and poor condiment execution. On the contrary, the ham and cheese omelette was solid...served with a hash brown and toast. I'll give the Italian beef a shot next time, but the Dogs are out of the picture.

    (3)
  • Harold T.

Great Chicago dog and fries in the airport. The dog was nice and snappy and toppings were excellent.

    (5)
  • Richard R.

Find another place to eat. This is not a traditional Chicago hot dog establishment. How is it possible to serve cold got food when you have a grill?

    (1)
  • Kevin C.

It's okay. Got the chicago dog. It was mediocre. The chili cheese fries also weren't that great.

    (2)
  • Mark D.

Well placed for every terminal and quick with service so not much waiting in line. Food: Of course what matters the most is taste...and these dogs are pretty dang good. Now I'm no hot dog connoisseur but (at least for me) these airport dogs were actually better than anything I tasted in Hampton Roads. However, if you're getting a dog (regardless of your appetite) get the jumbo. The size of the dog does make a difference in taste. Better to throw away half of a great tasting dog than eat a whole small one that isn't as good. So what's the downfall? Well despite their being wrapped up so not to spill out in the bag they aren't the easiest to eat on the plane. Hint: Bring lots of napkins, especially with the Chili Dog and the Chicago Dog. Overall: this place makes my 4 Star airport food list. It's a small list because...well...because airport food usually stinks. BUT not at Gold Coast Dogs!

    (4)
  • Pat R.

I cannot come to the Chi without having a Chicago Dog. It's a must! Gold Coast did not disappoint. I was expecting sub par food for the restaurant being in the airport, but boy was I wrong! The dog along with the chili cheese fries left me in awe and in perfect condition to battle the latest delayed flights with Southwest; however that's a different story. If you're craving a Chicago style dog and haven't had a chance to get one, this is the last chance for quality.

    (4)
  • Joe G.

Visited for breakfast. On the plus side bagels aren't bad and line moved pretty well. They forgot the cheese on my sandwich and while it was passable it wasn't anything special for the money.

On the first leg of my 20 hour airport stranding fiasco, I decided to make it a point to complete my culinary feast in Chicago with the one and only Chicago Dog. This place was on the way to my gate and shined bright like a diamond. It's a small joint packed away in the Midway airport. Lots of colors makes this place super vibrant. Lots of employees tells you fast service and great food! One sign that stood out to me was the Notice about using ketchup on your Chicago dog. Super funny. Of course, there were two things I needed to try when I came to Chicago: Deep dish pizza and Chicago dogs. I needed to compare it to my culinary experience in NYC. For my meal, I got the Jumbo XL, Chicago Style, Char dog, fries and bottle of water for $8.59. The fries were just like any other fast food joint, nothing special. It's all about the char dog. On the Chicago style, there were pickles, peppers, tomatoes, relish, mustard and onions. This dog was packed! Every bite offered a different flavor and texture. The dog was charred perfectly. Lots of black but not enough to taste burnt. Packed with flavor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this dog. Sooo good!!! Listen, when it comes to the dog, I've gotta hand it to Chicago. They've invented a truly magnificent dog. This is something you have got to try at least once in your lifetime. You will not be disappointed!

  • David A.

I have probably stopped here 5 or 6 times when connecting at Midway. Gold Coast has standard Chicago favorites like an Italian Beef and proper hot dogs with sport peppers and poppy seed buns. Typically the wait is not long, which is just what I need when I'm in a hurry. I don't have any complaints.

    (3)
  • Marcia M.

It was only ok. The char dog was kind of dry and the bread didn't taste too fresh....service was quick and unfriendly.

    (3)
  • Yvonne B.

One of the benefits of airplanes not really serving food anymore is that I can choose my own good before the flight. Gold Coast Dogs is probably the closest (or one of the closest) restaurants once you get through security. It's quick - even if there's a line. Heck, I've gotten in line moments before boarding and then felt like that guy in the Jimmy John's commercial. You know - the man wedged between two large human beings who is relieved by having a sandwich delivered to him. Yup, stopping at Gold Coast Dogs makes me feel like that guy who has a scrumptious and satisfying meal and is the envy of all of the other passengers. I always get a hot dog (Chicago style, of course) with cheese fries. M likes getting that too, but she branches out into other items also including a breakfast sandwich, bagel, and coffee. Once I got a fruit cup. I think that everything is reasonably priced.

  • Christopher T.

Don't let a Chicagoan tell you that you need to buy a char dog inside the city. No char dog vendor anywhere in the city makes the actual hotdog in house. It's shipped from some giant wearhouse where it's been sitting in formaldehyde, I'm sure. For that matter, no one makes the bread or the pickled veg either. No matter where you go in the city, the char dog is just assembled from ingredients made elsewhere. Whether you're in lincoln park or wicker park, it's the same collection of previously made ingredients to form one awesome 'dog. All they do is provide the char. With that said, in regards to airport food, Gold Coast Dogs rule. It's the best airport food in the US probably, and likely due to the fact you don't have to rely on them to make the food from scratch. You just rely on them to assemble the great ingredients. A typical 'dog is just a frank, stale bread, and some watery condiments. A char dog has a burnt as shit frank(in a good way!) and a poppy seed bun. But the best part is that it's tiled with veg, like a pickle spear, tomato, mustard, and large green specs I assume are relish. If you've got a layover in Chicago, feel blessed you can punish your insides with a Gold Coast 'dog. If you're leaving Chicago after a lengthy stay and somehow forgot to get a dog in the city, this place will suffice.

I got the Italian Beef...no pun intended. It was lousy. I took two bites and tossed it in the dumper. However, my bag of Doritos was perfectly prepared. The staff was friendly and earned them a star.

Great Chicago dawg combo. Don't even think about asking for ketchup unless you want the stink eye.

  • Jimmy L.

Wow! So I travel a lot for work.. So I'm transferring through MDW quite a bit.. The first time I came here, it was pretty busy and the char dog turned out good. I thought I'd found the place that would keep me coming at every layover... Second time: the bustling manager wasn't there since it was later in the night. Food was definitely worse than the first time but not too bad still. I thought I'd give them another shot. Third: manager wasn't there again, and the lines have been getting shorter each time I went.. Didn't think anything of it. Got the usual char dog. When I opened the bag, it was a mess of a dog and I'd only walked out to find seating! In all, guess I'll be finding a new spot for my layovers..

    (2)
  • Chris M.

Best food in the big food court at Midway Airport...best value, too. Everything is expensive at an airport, but the food here wasn't outrageously priced and you are getting real food. I love their polish sausage, but if you're really hungry the cheesy italian beef is the best. I thought the "No ketchup" line was just for fun, but they seriously didn't have any.

    (5)
  • Marshall R.

Went here in a whim while waiting at the airport. Pretty good place I went just to finish off my trip with a Chicago dog. Te line was slow but once I ordered the food came out really fast. The hot dog was really good it has a great snap and flavor the fires were not to good but all in all a good meal.

    (4)
  • Troy F.

The little guy at the register needs to get over himself. A customer asked for something after she paid and the little man angrily said: "I asked you before if you wanted anything else and you said no!". When I finally got my food (little man's well oiled machine lost my order) it was pretty good, hence the three stars.

    (3)
  • Ken H.

What a disappointment! They used to be good. Staff was unprofessional! At 9pm on Sunday the airport is busy, they shut down both registers and do a 15 minute shift change! Really? I had time so I waited. The manager didn't fire up the grill so we waited longer! He then served1/2. Cooked dogs to speed things up. Everyone gets the $10 deal so I'm sure They lost more than$200 for that shift change. Oh well it's just a dog...

  • William B.

I know that it is unfair to judge regional cuisine by its airport avatar, so this won't be my final word on the subject. But for now let me put down a marker on the puzzle of the Chicago Dog. It seems like something I ought to like -- grilled meat with abundant vegetable garnish, including pickled things and spicy things, and they even omit ketchup! (I disapprove of ketchup.) Yet somehow I never quite get it. The vegetables don't stay put and the whole thing doesn't eat well. I think the culprit may be the steamed poppyseed bun, which I'm hoping somebody can explain to me. Why would you take a tubular array of crunchy vegetables and grilled meat and then wrap it in wet toilet paper? What am I missing?

    (2)
  • Elsie W.

This was so much better than Portillo's. I didn't expect much from airport hotdog, but I'd have to admit I liked it! Get the Char-dog.

    (4)
  • Kevin C.

I always get a egg and cheese bagel here before every flight. The bagels fresh and soft unlike the places around them in the food court. I've heard from others the hotdogs are the best here

    (5)
  • Ricky M.

I don't care what anyone else says but this place knows how to make a dog. Every time I am in Chicago or over at Midway for a layover I always stop at Gold Coast for a Char Dog with everything!

    (5)
  • Sally M.

First time having a Chicago style hot dog...I'm a fan! Got the jumbo char dog (less than $5), which was flavorful with a nice char and although not as big as I had expected, still filling. French fries ($2 and some change) were nothing special, could definitely do without. Not the friendliest service, but glad I tries this place instead of my usual airport stop, Potbellys.

    (4)
  • Dan B.

If you want a little taste of Chicago before you head to your destination then give Gold Coast a try. Otherwise, you're gonna get a heavy dose of McDonalds. Basically a good place to get a dog. You can get them steamed or charred. Chicago style (drug through the garden) or Maxwell style. I don't know why but I usually get a cup of the lobster bisque...weirdest place ever to order something like that but it works.

    (4)
  • David P.

I have to start with a HUGE thank you to Gold Coast Dogs for NOT being in Dallas or Fort Worth...because I could see myself chowing down on these bad boys 4 or 5 days a week...and well...thats a lot of hot dogs!!!! Secondly, I am unashamed to say that I LOVE hotdogs....LOVE I SAY!!!! The Char-Dog is easilly the VERY best hot dog I have ever eaten...hands down...no dispute...no comparison!!! When you talk to family and friends about a hot dog, even the Char-Dog, you either REALLY need to get a life, or...well...you REALLY need to get a life! But these things are so freaking delicious that I had two when getting off the plane in Chicago for lunch, and then 2 more before getting back on the plane at like 6 AM in the morning two days later!!! The char on the dog is incredible, the snap of the charred weiner, fresh buns, and the Chicago-style fixings were spot on (well....it IS Chicago!). Overall, a must try if in the Chicago area. And while the Chicago-style hotdog snobs may wince at the Char-Dog, Gold Coast Dogs takes the Chicago Dog to a new high...4 Char-Dog's eaten and counting!!!

  • Earl O.

Well a flight delay made me stop by here, I had the char dog with no onions pretty good.next time I'm in town I will try others to compare

Stopping for a quick layover in Midway and wondering if you can get your Chicago dog on? Look no further -- this is your ticket. Quick service and delicious food -- all I need in my life. Prices are a little steep, but it's the airport so you probably saw that coming.

    (4)
  • Tom G.

Char dog is great. Fries, not great today, but maybe when they're fresh? Have to say, as a dog lover I would stop here whenever coming through Midway, even for breakfast, which could be a breakfast sandwich, but is more likely to be a Char Dog. The service was good, friendly, helpful.

    (3)
  • Michael T.

Great taste a little overpriced for what you get but it is the airport good taste but I'll take a Detroit Coney Island over this any day. Get More and more flavor

  • Graham K.

This place scratched a serious chicago dog itch. Love the grilled dog. It could quite possibly be the best chicago dog I have ever had. I ate two and halfway through my flight I was was wishing I had another. :-)

  • Scott L.

Chicken sausage with everything = Awesome! Update: June 5, 2014 Well, they no longer have the Chicken Sausage - but the Jumbo Char Dogs - Chicago Style are still just about perfect! Not only is it a good hot dog, but it's a good hot dog in an airport! The fact that they make them just the way I like them - Mustard, Green Relish, Onions, Sport Peppers, Celery Seed, Pickle and Tomato (Chicago Style), it's just the icing on the cake! I cannot go through Midway without having AT LEAST one - but it's usually two.

    (5)
  • Jenn W.

Way better than you'd expect from an airport. I've eaten here several times now and have found the food consistent. Service is a bit harried, but the people are pleasant, if rushed. Go for the Char Dog, Chicago style. Juicy, hot tastiness in a bun. If you get the cheese fries, grab a fork--these are way too messy to eat with your hands. Also, the fries are on the bland side, but the gooey nacho cheese covers that nicely.

    (4)
  • Ken S.

Dogs are a good taste of Chicago while you change planes. Two "jumbo" dogs small fry and two drinks cost $18.27. Pretty expensive even for airport food. Unfortunately the cashier is pretty rude and they had no katsup. Jumbo is really a normal bun with a dog a little long for the bun. Get rid of the rude attendant, add katsup for our fries and make the jumbo the real jumbo size and i would say that it is worth it. I see that thw little guy rude cashier is mentioned by others here. Otoh is you want a Chicago dog at the airport b terminal then this is the only option.

Great breakfast sandwich & good solid coffee. A very good alternative to the slop that the Clown and the King offer for the weary traveler. Next time I'll try the Chicago dog.

    (3)
  • Alma C.

Best regular coffee at Midway (Metropolis). The Maxwell Street polish sausage I had doesn't compare to those I've had at the regular Gold Coast Dogs restaurants, but it's alright in a pinch and where else can you get an emergency polish fix at 8am?

    (3)
  • Anna Marie P.

Wow, I love the Chicago Dog! (I haven't had it outside the airport so I do not know how that compares) This place was great: very fast, which is an airport essential, and very tasty. The Combo has fries and you pick a 20oz drink or bottled water. Counter people were efficient and friendly. They had a good variety for a Dog House: specialty coffees, Chicago Italian Beef with Peppers & Onions, and some huge Cream Cheese Muffins plus snacks and pastries. Fun and quick!

  • Josh C.

Thanks to Southwest not offering any non-stop cross-country flights, I got parked here at Midway Airport for about an hour, and in that time I got to experience my first ever Chicago-style dog. Maybe it's because I'm from Los Angeles where the hot dog of choice is that of the bacon-wrapped variety, but this hot dog was just okay to me. Love the sign in front of the store talking about no ketchup on the hot dogs though!

Service was fast and easy. My first Chicago dog was good. Will try again when in the area.

Jumbo Char Dog came through once again! The employees tried to upsell me as I only wanted a hot dog on 11/27/12. Management should give them props for it as well as the delicious hot dog!

As someone who grew up in Chicago, the Chicago dog has a very special place in my heart and occupies a significant amount of real estate around my midsection. And like most Chicagoans, I am VERY picky about my dogs and equally particular about the limited allowable variations. I prefer my Vienna Beef split and grilled to a char, thank you, and celery salt is a MUST. And that's exactly the way Gold Coast serves 'em. Add to this the fact that Gold Coast is IN THE AIRPORT, and you're approaching nirvana. It means that a Chicago dog is usually the first and last thing I eat on a visit to the Windy City, thereby bracketing my trip with messy deliciousness. And on the (albeit, very rare) occasions that I have a connection in Midway, there's usually a Chicago dog keeping me company on my layover as well. And just so it's out there and you know, Gold Cost fires up the grill and will serve you a hot dog FOR BREAKFAST. At 7. A. M. And yes. I have.

Solid chicAgo style dog! Even better being that it's airport food! Quick, fresh and great tasting! Friendly staff! Can't go wrong! Coulda been 5 stars but the coke was warm!

Stopped by here for a quick bite to eat on a layover.....one of my favorite places to eat at Midway. I was jonesing for some Chicago Style Hot Dogs and this place hit the spot. I ordered a Chicago Dog & a Pizza Puff....yum! yelp.com/biz_photos/wv6b… yelp.com/biz_photos/wv6b… The Chicago Dog was perfect.....I was in heaven! The Pizza Puff took a while to cool off, but I wasn't disappointed.....Iltaco goodness! :) Can't wait to come back so I can get more grub! Return Factor - 93%

This is a pretty solid place. 3 Stars is a pretty decent score, being in an airport and all. I've always loved Chicago dogs. Because they're delicious and bad for me. That's a fine combination. In my opinion, it's the best of the big 3 that Chicago is famous for-- the other two being Italian Beef and Deep Dish Pizza. This airport location is in the food court right after security. I almost walked off without my shoes because I wanted a Hot Dog. I got the Jumbo Char Dog, which seems to be what everyone orders at this place. Always order your Dog with everything! As usual, I eat the peppers separately, but that's my preference. The dog had a nice char and was chewier than most, which suited my taste that day. The Neon green relish is always good. I swear, whoever made this goop first must have been colorblind! I've had better Dogs in Chicago, but this is good airport food for a relatively decent price. One Jumbo Dog is enough for anyone, really--- but I ate two--- because it's bad for me!

I ordered the jumbo char dog Chicago style. It was exceptional and I can't wait to try another one when I'm on my way through. The ingredients were fresh and the hot dog had great flavor. A nice little gem at the airport.

I couldn't make it home without another Chicago-styled bun o' meat. I tried, I really did...but Gold Coast is right there after you get through security, and I am weak. I went with the Chicago Dog combo (long, charred, fully loaded Chicago hot dog + fries + soda) for around $8.50. Wait, what... Lobster Bisque? Uhm, oh yeah, I'm in! $4 for 12oz. Delicious hot dog. Fries were average, but I didn't eat many as I really, really wanted to finish the bisque. Bisque was creamy, rich with a definite hint of sherry. I won't waste my time and money on fries and the soda next time. Instead I'll focus on the Chicago dog and upsize to the 16oz bisque!

Fries were hot and the dog was tasty. I'm sure the dog had been sitting on a rotating grill for a while but it was still juicy. Good safe bet at the airport.

8:44am turns out to be the perfect time for a well-charred Chicago Dog. I loved the flavor and textures in the toppings, the dog itself was great and I wish the bun stood up to the challenge a little better. Overall, darn good breakfast!

I'm not sure why everyone else had such a bad experience with Gold Coast Dogs because I LOVED my Jumbo Char Dog that I ordered (with everything on it!!). YUM! I shouted my order over a crowd of people and to be honest, I had a little bit of skepticism that they would get my order correct. Shame on me....these guys are professionals and my delish lunch was handed over to me in under 5 minutes. My Jumbo Char Dog was huge and had that delicious flavor from the grill. And in true Chicago fashion, it had Mustard, Relish, Onions, Tomato, Pickles, Sports Pepper & Celery Salt. Sounds a bit overwhelming but it was just darn tasty! And because I am a potato fiend, I got a side of their fries. Equally delicious and fresh from the fryer. yelp.com/biz_photos/wv6b… Loved my Chicago Hot Dog and can't wait to come back to have another...YUM-O!

I ate here while waiting for my flight home. This was my first time in Chicago, and I wanted to try some local food. However, I was so busy on my trip I didn't have a chance to try anything local... until I went to Gold Coast Dogs. I saw they had Chicago style hot dogs. I have had a Chicago style dog in my neck of the woods, but I wanted to try the real thing. However, once I saw that they had charred polish sausage on the menu I decided to get the Polish sausage Chicago style. Although I am neither a huge fan of mustard nor pickles (but when in Rome...) but placed my order for the Chicago style polish sausage. I must say it was very tasty. The sausage had a charred crispy outside, like a ball park style hot dog. The tones of condiments that were on top of the sausage actually added to the flavor. The peppers really took it up a notch. The only slight complaint I have is when I asked what sort of condiments do they have the lady behind the counter pointed at the area which explained what was on Chicago style, but no other condiments were listed. Other than that it was great. I would eat here again if/when I am ever back in the Windy City.

As a native Western New Yorker, nothing will ever top Ted's Hot Dogs. But, the Chicago style dog is probably a close second. Its amazing -- something about the combination of the bun and the toppings make this an amazing taste sensation. I get to Chicago about twice a year, but I pass through the airport about twice a month -- and when I do, this a necessary stop every time.

Stopped here on the way back to Texas, and both the dog and the experience were STELLAR! Line was short, prices were reasonable, and I got the Chicago dog and it was just out of this world. I'll definitely be back next time I hit Chicago, if I'm not already full from Giordano's :D

I'm sure someone in chicago is going to want to shoot me after I declare this place the best chicago dog I had on my trip. It wasn't like I had any expectations for it, but it just came out tasting pretty darn good. That and some fries and the jardiniair or whatever ingredient they use to top off the dog, made it taste really good. Perhaps there were a few better joints in Chicago, but even for an airport, one has the option as a last resort to leave with a decent experience. I went with the jumbo which came with a soda and fries for under $10. Score!

WARNING: Their steamed Vienna Beef hot dogs somehow taste inferior to those at countless other Chicago dog stands. Also, they do NOT offer a double dog option. Not legit.

Airport food has made a big improvement lol Great hot dog!! Stopped here for a connecting flight and I was not disappointed. Never had a Chicago style dog before this. Writing this review makes me want one lol! Nicely charred yum, celery salt never heard of it, yum, nice slice of pickle and the relish yum yum -- I don't know what else because I de-voured it!!

I'd eaten breakfast only 2 hours prior, but with my flight about to take off I decided to take advantage of my last opportunity to eat a Chicago dog in Chicago. Just as good as the other location I went to, although a bit messy with the mustard and topping distribution. Meh, no real complaints here, tasty stuff.

How you gonna F up a Chicago hot dog in Chicago? By serving it cold with a cucumber (not really pickled ) that is 3x the size of the dog on a soggy ass bun with cold fries. Airport food court, What do you expect....

    (2)
  • R S.

Three words...Jumbo Char Dog. It's all about the Chicago Dog. Forget the fries, or trying the other non hot dog related items. Get the Jumbo Char Dog and enjoy. I stop here on every connector flight and have not been disappointed yet.

If we fly out of Chicago from Midway Airport, my supervisor and I will make sure we make a stop here. See, the thing is, we rarely ever treat ourselves to a Chicago style hot dog, and so when we're about to leave Chicago to go to Atlanta for work, we suddenly find the craving for the char-boiled Chicago hot dog with everything on it and fries. Mmmm! I haven't been to a lot of hot dog places in Chicago (but I should really check it out), but between Gold Coast Dogs (this location and the one at O'Hare--I like this location more) and the Weiner's Circle, I'd choose the Gold Coast Dogs. They have a much cleaner taste to their hot dogs than Weiner's Circle, and a cleaner taste is much more palatable to me than one grilled in old oil.

    (4)
  • Monte R.

I had the Gold Coast grilled hot dog Chicago style. Delicious! Loved it! For food at an airport, it was just as good as you get downtown and it was fairly priced at $4 dollars.

Bacon, egg and cheese on an Everything Bagel was excellent. All aspects cooked exactly as I would have wanted.

Got the Jumbo Cheddar Char Dog with tomato, Onions and Relish. The relish was the star and was freshly made. The fries were decent. The meal was 11 bucks. That was steep.

On a quick pass through Midway Airport this place jumped out with two or three vegetarian items on the menu. That is hard to find. As I learned, you can't actually find it here either. Rather than serving up the quick meal needed in an airport setting the person behind the counter - after I ordered the veggie hot dog - told me it would be 5 or 10 minutes before they could get that out to me. I then asked about the Samosas and he said they had changed the oil and it would be several minutes before they could use the fryer. This was at 3:00 PM and not some weird hour so I have a hard time seeing how they could take their main cooking source out of commission at this hour. I cannot recommend standing in line if you are looking for vegetarian at Midway. There are no other real choices (Potbelly fails too) for a vegan or vegetarian here so bring your own if you have to go to Midway. Gold Coast Dogs is a big fail.

Maaaaaaaaaaan... the very nanosecond that i land in Chitown I NEED a Chicago dog. I am so happy that this place is in the food court at this airport. I feel like I cannot function if I don't eat real food once I get off the plane. But to think of eating a Chicago dog right off the plane is just orgasmic. Please remember, you DO NOT put ketchup on a hot dog (that's just unethical, and gross lol) They move fast here, so be ready to order once you get up to the front of the line. Then suddenly, you're one wam-bam-thank-you-ma'am away from eating a delicious dog. YUMMAAAYYY ::warning:: be prepared to be side stared by workers AND other patrons if you ask for ketchup. Yes, they have ketchup for all of you that just can't live without it, however, watch out for people like me who are in line giving your the elevator eyes lol... I love you Gold Coast for always being there for me. Thank you!

I haven't figured out why, but I am addicted to the hot dogs at Gold Coast Dogs, especially at Midway Airport. Perhaps it is the high prices that makes me savor each bite. The jumbo Char-dog is 4.95 (steep), but the dog is HUGE and all of your classic Chicago dog toppings. Ask for an extra crispy and you will be a better person for it. I mean for a Chicago dog they do it right. A great way to kill some time in the airport. It also helps that Southwest flies here. I am a guaranteed customer! Although I have actually considered taking the Orange line all the way out to Midway just for Gold Coast, but I cant bring myself to it ...yet ...

I stop at Gold Coast every time I fly from midway. Partially for me but mostly because my father in law, a lover of Chicago hot dogs, requests one every time we visit. The char dogs are juicy and tasty. If you need a hot dog at midway; Gold Coast is the place to go

  • Leanne E.

So, a southerner walks into an airport and right up to Gold Coast Dogs and has no idea what to order, but has heard these dogs are good stuff. They do things with hot dogs not previously experienced. Go with a a jumbo chicago dog and enjoy!

  • Hema K.

My husband got the hot dogs combo and really liked the food. I also noticed they have Samosa listed under appetizer section.. its quite a hit.. There is this sign which says please do not add ketchup to the dogs lol.. makes sense..

Delicious! I really didn't expect to get that great of a dog from the random place in the airport on our way out, but I was pleasantly surprised. Good quality beef that tasted like it had actually been grilled, fresh tasty bun, and plenty of topping options (mustard, pickle, peppers, onions, relish, maybe more? They have a sign saying they won't serve you ketchup, but they'll give you packets if you ask). A great way to end our trip to Chicago.

  • Derrick C.

Thanks to Gold Coast Dogs, I got to devour a Chicago-dog at 8am for breakfast and damn was it good. That equals mustard, onions, neon sweet relish, tomatoes, a pickle, and NO KETCHUP. Yea it might be a little bit messy to eat w/ the pickle but the sausage was as good as I've had for a standard hot dog. Plump, juicy, full of flavor, and even had a pretty good snap to it, if you're looking for a quick bite in Midway, you gotta come here.

Im not in love with hotdog places especially since im a vegetarian.I only ate here because i had few limited choices yesterday morning when i was at Midway airport in Chicago. This place isnt that good. They have a vegetarian menu but they dont have vegetarian hotdogs on it.I decided to get a Samosa plate with a side order of fries. The samosas were plain in taste and were a waste of time. The fries were good, very crisp and slightly seasoned. They kind of reminded me of the old Burger King fries i cant seem to find anymore since most of their fries dont taste like they use to . They also had a falafel sandwich and a couple of more vegetarian items but i wast interested.I dont see how they do buisness in an airport.Maybe the actual hotdogs might taste good. I dont know, just dont get the samosa plate.Their was an Indian Family seated across from me in the food court and i seen they didnt even bother to order any food from there..Maybe that should have been my first red flag.. but now i know ,and now you know.Wait for the other restaurants around there to open. You'll be glad you did.

I needed something fast to take with me on my flight for breakfast/lunch/dinner (you know how airlines are nowadays with meals on flights :p). I was pleasantly surprised by this amazing dog! By far the best hot dog I have ever had. It was a huge dog with great flavor; with the perfect amount of char. The bun was nice and fresh. The toppings were good too! I especially liked the entire spear of pickle they put on it. The fries were decent. For airport food, this was a great taste at a good deal.

Place is okay. The service is a little better than Superdawg in the same airport, but the food sucks about as bad. On the one hand, they do give you choice. you're allowed to get the dog without fries. They also serve a bunch of other crap such as cheesesteaks and cookies. The dog I got was a nice size compared to SD, and it was cheaper at about 5 bucks. I got the dog pretty quick, however it was still cold. Its obvious that all they do is grill a whole bunch of them at a time, and then reheat them for all of the char and grill marks I saw on the meat, I didnt expect to eat a cold hotdog. Shame on you Gold Coast for taking shortcuts. Who knows how old that dog could have been.

Only reason I am giving this place a 4 star is because it was my first but hopefully not my last opportunity to try this legit hot dog spot out. I had a 2 hour layover at chicago midway on my way back to dc from another epic weekend in Vegas with some of my best friends. After making my way from terminal B to where my connection was at in terminal A I realized that there were a LOT more choices back in B! I made my way back and after browsing the central food court area stumbled upon gold coast dogs. I quickly pulled out my phone to check the reviews on here and saw great stuff! I jumped in line and got the jumbo char dog with everything on it and fries. Filling and very tasty! I especially liked the overflow of onions, pickles, peppers etc. Flying cross country on southwest usually means a stop in Chicago and now I have a "spot" in chi-town to leave me satisfied!

I had just arrived on a Southwest flight from Nashville and needed to grab some dinner during my short layover. Many of the restaurants nearest to the gate where I had just deplaned from had long lines and since I knew I had some time, I journeyed down the terminal a little further and I found a food court. Looking at the options, I figured what better way to celebrate being in the Windy City then a Chicago style dog? The line was fairly short and moved pretty quickly. I was a little flustered that the employees taking orders did not communicate and did not know if my order was taken yet since they should be able to observe their customers from their tiny space of a kitchen. I gave the female employee my order for a Chicago style dog combo which comes with fries and a drink but she thought I wanted a cheddar dog. I had to repeat myself to make sure that she had my order right which annoyed me a little bit. When I stepped over to the cashier with meal in hand, I had to tell him what I was having. I think this lack of communication is just the way they do things which is okay but it didn't make me feel like a valued customer. The cashier didn't even remind me to grab my drink afterwards. I grabbed myself a bottle of orange-orange vitamin water and looked for table to try to enjoy my dinner at. Upon inspecting the contents of my brown paper bag, my wiener appeared to have been bitten. It was not as good as other Chicago dogs I have had outside of Chicago but the fries were good. They tasted like hash browns. I can't imagine that this is a good place for kids since they have a sign that says you should not ask for ketchup for your hot dog. I get that the Chicago way is to have your dog without ketchup but for kids, ketchup is probably the only condiment they want.

A-OK is how I sum up this place. Traveling through Midway, I wanted to find a decent but fast lunch as I waited for my connecting flight. Not content with the usual fast food standbys like McDs, I opted for a "Chicago Style" hot dog from Gold Coast Dogs... I ordered the Jumbo Char Dog... a little overpriced but it is airport food... It was okay... not sure if I like the giant pickle spear in my dog. All in all... I've had better dogs elsewhere... but it wasn't a bad lunch and a good alternative to the usual Big Macs and Subways... I also ordered a Lobster Bisque which wasn't half bad either. Somewhat on the rich and creamy side, it was good for a cold wintry day.

  • Jeff H.

This is a generous five stars. Our routine when we fly out of Midway is to hit Reilly's Daughter for a few pints of Guinness (that's when I officially feel like I'm on vaca) then hit Gold Coast Dogs on the way to the gate. Jumbo Chardog with nothing but nacho cheese sauce. The absolute best thing to eat in the world. I've been to other Gold Coast Dog Locations and didn't think the quality was as good. This one is always top notch. Highly recommend.

Jumbo Char Dog isnt too bad. Not the greatest though. If desperate for airport food. Then put this on your list lol

I've been craaaaaving a hot dog for an entire week. I came here last Wednesday expecting the best hot dog ever, but I was disappointed. I got the jumbo Chicago hot dog. I was expecting this fat, warm, hot dog dressed with every sinful condiment & topping possible. Disappointment city. The hot dog was lukewarm, the bun tasted a bit stale, and the toppings (tomato, pickle, etc.) were limp. I also got fries. The portion was disappointingly small and somewhat cool (as in not warm). I was hoping to cap off my Chicago trip with a hot bang, it was definitely a dog. Where's the nearest Costco? For the same price, I could've gotten 3-4 hot dogs and enjoyed the experience 10 times as much.

I'm always wary of eating at unfamiliar places in Midwestern airports. I fly out of Midway once or twice a year, and I always used to go with Lalo's because (a) it was familiar and (b) it wasn't a hassle to order something without meat. I've since seen the error of my Lalo's-tolerating ways and have decided to try new places at Midway. On my last Chicago visit, I had a very early departing flight, and I had gotten to the airport without eating breakfast. Lalo's wasn't even open yet, so I skeptically walked over to Gold Coast Dogs. Breakfast is an easy meal to find meatless, although bacon and its bits often find their way into ridiculous menu options. To my surprise, Gold Coast Dogs also has bagels and eggs, so I ordered an egg on a bagel. It came out quickly, and it was good. I was going to include in this review a long story about the funny couple standing behind me in line and their epic argument about what to order and how complicated the menu was--it's not--but my reviews are already too long.

So final concensus on Chicago's "famous" hot dogs is... "meh I've had better". I had the jumbo char hotdog which had signs that said "famous" so I figure I had to get some. The flavour was nice I guess as far as hot dogs go and there were quite nicely grilled. I did however find them a touch too salty. Apparently a thing with "Vienna sausages" is that ketchup is forbidden. Either way I just have mine with onions and saurkraut. I also decided to try out the lobster bisque; big mistake. OMG it was terrible, I would have probably liked drinking the water that you boil a lobster in better. For those who know me, they know that I love my soup and will have it whenever I can. This one... I'll pass. Brutal. Ultimately I find their hot dogs kinda like the ones from London Ontario. By saying that, London nor Chicago has anything on Toronto street meat. I don't know what it is but Toronto knows how to make hotdogs on the street. So... Gold Coast Hotdogs... Come to Toronto an have a real hot dog. P.s. Just kidding, please don't kill me. Bah how do I get this awful lobster bisque taste out of my mouth??

One of my favorite airport eateries. Great Chicago-style hot dogs, which if you've never had them, are loaded with pickles, tomatoes, onion and other veggies - not as unhealthy as you might think.

    (4)
  • Tracy A.

Chicago dog Day-glow relish and a confusing choice between a jumbo Chicago dog and a grilled Chicago dog. The lady in front of me asked the exact question I was going to and her answer did not help either of us with our menu choice. We both just went with the jumbo Chicago dog with everything. What the hell?

I love this place.. since I only fly SW, I've had many layovers at MDW... every time I'm there, I make sure to stop by Gold Coast for a jumbo char dog (Chicago style).

    (4)
  • James F.

ate here on a layover, the chicagos best had really tasty ingredients: tomatoe, pickle, onions, green peppers, jalepenos! the fries were really crispy too! full meal cost 9.50 which includes drink fries and hot dog.

  • Quynh-An P.

I've had a Gold Coast Char-dog here twice. The first time was during a layover between DC and Seattle, and the latter was last night on my way home from a Chicago trip. I wish we had something like this in Seattle. I love the crunch of the char-dog and just how absolutely delicious it is. I'm usually not a huge fan of hot dogs either, but boy can I scarf one of those puppies down. I mean, the only thing we have in Seattle are the Seattle dogs (cream cheese on the hot dog...actually not as bad as it sounds) but it is in NO way even close to how yummy the Char Dog is. Oh Gold Coast, will you find a way to jump on a flight and come to Seattle too? You're already at the airport...

Italian sausage has a nice balance of spicy without being hot. It was grilled well, and quite tasty. I cut up some apple and it paired really nicely. 3 1/2 stars

    (3)
  • Bailey Z.

I have tried Italian and Polish dogs in Chicago, but ironically I didn't get to try a true Chicago dog until I was at the airport waiting for my plane to depart. Gold Coast Dogs was one of the cheaper places to eat at the airport so I gave it a try. I realized that it's pretty difficult to eat the hot dog with a pickle in the middle so I took turns taking a bite out of the dog and then the pickle. Overall, it was nothing special. I would prefer Maxwell's Polish dogs to the Chicago style, but then again, it was airport food so maybe I didn't get a true representation of a Chicago dog.

    (3)
  • Gary S.

If you are in the Chicago airport it's a must stop. Correction you will be stuck in Midway. So while you are waiting for that delayed flight run down and get a dog. They are way better than the pizza in Chicago.

    (3)
  • Melissa R.

Char jumbo dog (Chicago style)... Must try!

    (4)
  • Nick L.

Italian beef was really salty and horrible. Fries not much better. Crabby "cook.". I fly through Midway a lot. I won't be stopping here again for a beef fix. At least the bottled Coke was good (although I did need to search for a cold one). I don't usually expect much at the airport but this place was way below even airport quality.

    (1)
  • Ryan R.

$5 for a char dog, great dog... Forget the ketchup, for that matter just stick to the Chicago style topping and enjoy. Would give it a 4 Star, but its a little pricey for a dog (Airport food what do you expect)

    (3)
  • Erica S.

This was the only place I had the Chicago-style hot dogs....before my flight home. I wasn't sure how big the hot dog was so at first I just got one, but it turns out that it was a skinny old dog (compared to the Costco one :P) that I went back to get a second one, a polish dog. I got everything except the celery salt, which I wasn't even sure what it was. When I first opened the wrap to look at it, the big slice of pickle on top threw me off for a sec. I had to decide if I wanted to eat it with my dog or not. I ended up eating it on the side. This was the first hot dog with no ketchup, but I actually didn't mind as I realized that the various toppings were plenty and that the taste of ketchup actually covers up the taste of the dog itself. Overall, it was okay, but I did miss my ketchup on the fries though. :(

Yummy! A Chicago dog, fries, and bottled water for 9.53. Not bad for airport prices!! And definitely a good hot dog!!

  • Furyk C.

I'd rather be a porn star in the city of ain't-got-no-soap that put this crap in my mouth again - the hot dog tasted like: Burnt hair no Burnt hair with neon-green relish no Burnt hair with neon-green relish, ONE pickle no Burnt hair with neon-green relish, ONE pickle and mustard no Burnt hair with neon-green relish, ONE pickle and mustard and no tomato or onion This is EASILY the worst hot dog i have ever had the misfortune of putting in my mouth (and i go to a dive bar that gives away free hot dogs.) The worst thing is that i was THRILLED to get a chance to enjoy a Chicago style dog on a recent layover but just ended up wishing they had air-sickness bags in the airport....ick

  • Jeff M.

I was spoiled. The first ever Chicago-style dogs I've ever had were at Superdawg, Hot Doug's, and Portillo's. In this respect, I thought Chicago was this invincible hot dog producing city (it still is actually). The jumbo char dog here was good, but that's all. There is much better in Chicago. For Midway, it's good if you have the craving.

    (3)
  • Ryan R.

I was pretty excited to try my first "chicago style dog" but since this place was in an airport I didn't get my hopes up too much. Turns out that was a good decision. The hot dog was just ok. And it was surprisingly bland considering it had relish, mustard, peppers, a pickle spear, and who knows what else on it. The dog itself was nice and thick but that was really the only thing that stood out to me. I also got their fries which were pretty good, but they have a "no ketchup" policy at that place so I had to eat them dry, which was a bit disappointing. The price was a little high for what you got. Next time I'm at Midway, I'm getting something different.

    (2)
  • Dave C.

For an Airport dog- it doesnt get any better. Indian owned so they also offer a couple veggie items such as Samosas. I had the Chicken Polish Dog chicago style. Located inside Terminal B where Southwest Airlines is at.

  • Kev G.

Amazing! The dog was perfectly charred the roll the snap of the dog. Everything!

    (5)
  • Art S.

Pretty much the worst hot dog I've ever eaten in my life. Absolutely disgusting. Charred goodness is one thing, being a piece of charcoal is another. I ate two bites and threw it away. This is not the way to introduce people to the Chicago hot dog (luckily I've had plenty of other awesome ones). I should've waited the extra 15 minutes for Superdawg. Do NOT eat at this Gold Coast location. I repeat: put your money back in your pocket, and move away from the horror...

  • Rannel L.

Spent 5 days in Chicago and wasn't able to fit in a Hot Dog run until my flight home to San Diego. I decided to try Gold Coast because the name was popular and I wanted to try a "Chicago" Dog before I head out. Not sure if this is any less authentic then getting it outside the airport but I thought it was pretty good. I just had the basic Chicago hot dog with fries and it left me satisfied. I liked all the extra toppings that go on top and the hot dog was above average.

    (4)
  • Daniel B.

This is based off my kids. I did not eat here. We landed in Chicago on a layover and they wanted Chicago dogs. The both liked them and for airport food, I don't think that you can get much better.

  • Harry P.

Not a bad dog considering they're located in an airport. Perfect if you need one more for the road.

A real treat when passing thru Midway! Make sure you don't ask for ketchup on that dog!

Hot Dogs for breakfast??? WooHoo!!! I had a 7:30am flight a few days ago and GCD was there to feed me breakfast at 6:30am. Quite decent grilled dogs served Chicago style of course.

  • Sheryl E.

This was the last Chicago meal before heading back home. I ordered a plain jumbo dog with fries and a medium Coke. Although it was "plain," I enjoyed it better than with all the ingredients in the Chicago style dog. It wasn't over cooked or burnt and not too salty. The serving of fries was a bit small, but tasted good. I would definitely stop by here if I ever travel to Chicago again!

    (4)
  • Sheri N.

make sure you get your dogs charred, it makes it all the better. i've been told that the purists eat their hot dogs with the sole condiment of mustard, and that ketchup ruins the taste of a hot dog. since told, i must say that mustard is the way to go. you can add whatever you like, but just make sure the only sauce is mustard. i got the char polish dog with grilled onions, mustard, peppers, and relish. it was absolutely delicious. it was so good, i bought all 3 accoutrements that they sell in jars to bring back home!

    (5)
  • Teo R.

I always grab a jumbo char dog here before i board the plane (and sometimes when I land.) It's a good place to get your chicago dog fix, especially if you know you won't be able to make it to a local joint while in town. The fries are fine, but I never order them. If I'm really hungry, I also get their lobster bisque.

I'm no expert on Chicago-style hot dogs but I had the chance to compare Gold Coast and Superdawg at Midway recently with a layover here on both legs of my round trip. Gold Coast was much better: the dog itself was bigger and juicier, the toppings were tastier and the fries were crispier. Even if your connection otherwise confines you to the Superdawg vicinity in Concourse B, it's worth the walk to the main food court to get a Gold Coast dog.

I've passed through Midway airport numerous times now and I always go to Gold Coast Dogs before I board the plane- CHICAGO STYLE JUMBO CHAR DOG! Yes, it is overpriced ($4.09??) but the casing snaps ever so sweetly in your mouth.. mmmm...

from the : vesperbistro.com A few years back, airports were a weekly part of my life. Traveling isn't that provocative when you have to do for the man. It is much more sophisticated and takes on a different air when it is for a relaxing vacation with the wife... or a romantic getaway to visit the mistress in Argentina. Recent changes at work have ended my 4 year respite from travelling. So I am back at it, puddle jumping around the states in pursuit of cheap airfare - taking up whole days for travel in what should be a 4 hour non-stop flight, all in the name of saving my company's executives $200. My recent return from back east laid me over in Chicago's Midway airport. My immediate thought after touching down was that I have to head to Super Dawgs. To my great dismay Super Dawgs was in another concourse and thus going through security checkpoints again just wasn't in the cards. In my quest I walked right on by Harry Carey's. I had to. You know this. Yes I am certain they unquestionably had some kind of tasty salty pig parts in a casing on their menu but there is something that puts me off to chef-less celebrity restaurants. No disrespect to the loveable mis-pronouncer of Paul Assenmacher. Hearing him struggle with that and lisping out Luis Salazar between swigs of hooch from his flask at a Cubs day game was utterly hilarious at times. It is just that it rubs me the wrong way when a guy like a Harry Carey or a Ted Turner, who after scoring Barbarella, and ruling a bazillion dollar cable network empire, says to himself "I always wanted to open my very own restaurant". Then with a snap of a finger, some multinational conglomerate comes in and crams it and his image down our throats. Meanwhile the sous chef at the local gastro-pub day dreams of one day having the same opportunity while scrubbing out the broiler and dragging out floor mats after a dinner shift in the weeds. So thanks Harry Carey - for the memories of taking me out to the ball game but let's just leave it at that. But this is Chicago right? There invariably is another hot dog stand somewhere in my terminal. The culinary technique of assembling a Chicago style hot dog isn't some arcane practice only learned at Le Corden Bleu. As certain as you can find a deli in New York I stumbled upon Gold Coast Dogs. Scanning the menu all I'm seeing are omelet muffins and sausage and egg bagels! Did I fail to mention that it is 8:50 in the morning? When you are traveling and jet-lagging around the country you never know what time it is. After all, waking up at 4:00 in the morning for a flight to Phoenix really subjugates the incongruity of wanting a hot dog for breakfast. I was fortunate the grill cook had already started his prep work for the pending lunch rush. As luck would have it he had a nice tasty juicy looking bratwurst ready to go. "We can do that Chicago style right?" I asked. His response was simply; "Is there any other way man?" Why no, when in the Second City, there is no other way and for that brief moment I was the man. A nice snappy crunch on the charred casing, the heat from the sport peppers and the sweetness from that funky looking too green of a relish, really hit the spot. One of these days I'll try and get out of the airport and experience the real food Chicago has to offer as a destination instead of a layover - it has been 8 years, so maybe in June. In the mean time thank you Gold Coast Dogs for making my breakfast.

Your first or last stop to get a traditional Chicago hot dog. We had to get a char dog with all the fixings. Is it only about the flavor, or is it about the experience?

It was my first time having a real Chicago style dog, and it was excellent! Stop by if you have a few minutes to kill at MDW.

I won't deny this place is overpriced but it's a welcome change from your average crappy airport chains. A solid choice to represent the Chi-dog to tourists.

I like what they're trynig to do at Midway - kind of give the airport the 'feel' of the city. But, the 'feel' of Chicago is free freakin' fries with your 'dog. I don't want to drop $8 on a dog, fries, and a bottle of water. But I did. One time only.

Layover at midway around lunchtime I found this place in the center of the concourse intersection. Char dog was great! Never had a Chicago style dog before and I'm sure there are places outside the airport that are more authentic, but this place really makes some delicious dogs. Think high quality ballpark cuisine; it's good like that. I'll definitely stop here again next layover I have at midway.

Gold Coast Dogs at Midway Airport is a fine choice. Find them at the food court. The hot dog we shared is not the best, but it was not the worst either. Jumbo Char Dog Chicago Style for $5.40 was our choice. I may try it again in the future or something else from their menu. Wish it was cheaper, but hey we are in the airport so higher prices. I was still hungry after eating the dog. Not very filling at all. Worth trying for yourself.

I think this place gets business because it gets all the business of the people who say "I want one more Chicago dog before I leave." It is hard to do a hot dog wrong, but it is also hard to make it extraordinary. The staff is quick and quirky, joking with me on two occasions, but at the end of the day, it was just alright. I just wanted one more Chicago dog. Can't go wrong with the Polish dog. The Italian was also alright.

Having a brief layover in Chicago Midway airport, I read the reviews and decided to give Gold Coast Dogs a try...after all, you have to have a Chicago dog while in Chicago...right? Seeing the line wasn't too long and was moving briskly, I jumped in and when it was my turn, had the following conversation with the lady behind the counter. Me: Hello there. I would like to get one of your Chicago char dogs with no onions or tomatoes Hotdog Stand Person (HSP): no onions or tomatoes? Me: Correct, no onions or tomatoes HSP: do you want the relish? Me: Yes please. HSP: OK. 1 Chicago dog with no onions or tomatoes. So at this point I am thinking that this is going to be a great lunch and I will still be able to make my connecting flight and I can say that I had a Chicago dog in Chicago. So, I move down the line, pay for my meal (the hotdog, fries, and a drink came out to be a little less than 10 bucks, so seems like even the price was good for an airport.) A minute later the lady looks at me and tells the man next to her that this was for me...a " hotdog with no vegetables". The man looks at me and says "Chicago dog with no vegetables" and hands me the bag. So I take off to my gate, arriving about five minutes before boarding was to begin, so I find a spot and open the dog. Open the wrapper and see an onion fall out... Ok, no problem, maybe one just fell onto the wrapper...after all they were busy...so I open the bun and find a handful of onions, two small slices of tomato, and two sport peppers....that is all. No relish, no pickle, and most noticeably no actual dog. What the heck? I would have gone back, but my flight was starting to board. I am still not sure what happened, but I will not be visiting this stand again.

Gold Coast is my default food joint when I have layovers. The food isn't mind blowing, but it is decent for what it is. I always get the chili dog without cheese and chili cheese fries. Chili has some beans and is good. Staff is nice. No complaints about Gold Coast from me.

Why 4 stars? Because it's about as good as it gets from a food court at the airport. --- --- --- Airport food = compromising. Food court food = uninspiring. But I'll say this: I do love a fancier-than-normal hot dog. And I do love eating food in the midst of a coast-to-coast commute! So this was the perfect match for me. I would not necessarily visit Gold Coast on a regular basis if it were located in my city, but it certainly is an expensive way to grab a meal, without the stomach punishment that comes from similarly priced fast food joints. I'll also say that it does hit the carb-craving spot like nobody's business! When I'm eating healthy and craving bad things, hot dogs are one of the things I fantasize about the most. The funny thing is that I don't even eat hot dogs very often, but that's where my brain goes during the dark times.

Chicago Dog! Must get more napkins! You go to France, you get fries...you go to Belguim, you get waffles...You come to Chicago, you get a dog! A Chicago Dog! Not sure of the background of why the ingredients are added to this Chicago dog, but it's dog-gone yummy. A nice blend of sweet and spicy with a soft bum and nice char on the dog. So, no cat for me, get a dog and make it a Chicago Dog! Quick, friendly service and reasonable prices for an airport. And again, more napkins! A LOT more!
