The Classic Chicago Mix is an undeniable indulgence. I am a low-carber, and though I felt a smidgeon of guilt for eating an entire medium bag in one day, I forgave myself. Something this good is worth a splurge. I am just glad that I don't live in Chicago. The temptation would be too much. True, when I first heard about Garret Popcorn, I was skeptical. I mean, really, it is *just* popcorn. How can it generate all this hype? Well, I am happy that I stood in that long line. This is popcorn like I have *never* had before-- so much cheesy, caramel goodness. And yes, those two flavors really *do* go together. One thing though: this popcorn only remains fresh for one day, so when purchasing it make sure you don't expect it to remain fresh long after that.

First ever girls trip to Chicago from Alabama and took the advice of a friend to "try the popcorn". First of all, this isn't popcorn. It is straight up ambrosia from the gods! Our first clue as to its addictive powers came as we stopped a young man on Navy pier to ask where he got his bag of Garrett popcorn. He literally had a ring of orange goodness around his mouth and he could barely stop shoveling in handfuls of popcorn long enough to point toward a door while spewing some unintelligible directions. When these Alabama girls walked through the doors and spied a crowd gathered under a blue striped sign, that was clue #2, and we knew we had hit gold! We went for the mix and thought for sure we had found the holy grail of popcorn. The fresh cheesy popcorn was like nothing I had ever had and the buttery crisp caramel had me seeing visions of angels. My friend affectionately referred to it as cocaine for the remainder of our trip and since we woke up to her loud smacking and crunching in the middle of the night, and she ate it again for breakfast, I would say she nailed it. That was our third clue as to the addictive powers this manna from heaven possesses. We bought more popcorn two more times before flying home and imagine our sheer joy as I found out through their website that there is a Garrett Popcorn in Atlanta! That's only an hour and a half from where we live. I feel another girls trip coming on!

So after trying the infamous mix at the Vegas location, I decided to get the caramel pecan from here, and it was delicious. This would definitely be my go to before the mix. I thought it would be caramel popcorn with pecans just mixed in, but it was pecan pieces melted directly on the popcorn to give it a great caramel buttery pecan taste in every bite. I wished I would have asked for a bigger bag, I got the small tin. I will definitely embark on other flavors when I am able to visit, looks like they do. It disappoint.

Long wait for nothing. All of the popcorn taste basic. Its good to taste just to say you have tried it while in Chicago.

We passed by several Garrett shops in Chicago and all of the stores had long lines. I had to try the popcorn when we saw the stop at the Navy Pier. The wait wasn't too long. High turnover with the popcorn and even had a chance to try the flavor of the month - white chocolate popcorn. We bought the medium Garrett mix which was 2/3 cheese and 1/3 caramel. It is one of the most expensive popcorn that we've purchased, but it was so good and fresh! The cheese popcorn was made with real cheese, and the caramel popcorn was awesome! Thank goodness there were napkins in the bag since our hands were really cheesy. It is best to eat the popcorn within a day.

Pop goes the weasel... My, Oh my...cheddar popcorn! I love cheese. It is good by itself and just adds a punch to warm freshly made popcorn! Our friend told us to make sure to get popcorn while at the pier and being good tourists, we took his advice. Glad we did! I figured out why this popcorn is amazing...it's because everything is made fresh! The cheese is yummy and the caramel is sweet and adds so much flavor combined. The combo of these two things gives you the ChiCago Mix! Tangy with a sweet side, just like Chicago! They come in various sizes and they come in cute tins, so I know what my neighbors are getting for the holidays! The tins come if various decorations: Cubs or Soxs? Bulls? America? Chicago skyline? Christmas! The staff is friendly and are tons of fun! The lines are really long, but the wait is worth it! They do give small samples while you wait, so it just adds to the anticipation and excitement as to which popcorn you'll get! This is truly a local treat and a must purchase because I was waiting in line with so many people from various cities wanting to get the popcorn to take home. The staff and even their bags, recommend eating the popcorn right away and I don't blame them cause I think we almost inhaled ours. However, if you want it to travel, get the tin containers, it will be crunchy and not stale. Who are we kidding?!? The "stale" cheddar popcorn was still very tasty when we got back to California!

This is by far the best popcorn I have ever tasted. My friends' cousin took me here and at first I didn't think much of it. I always try to avoid popcorn to save my teeth. My friend suggested that I get the Chicago style which is a mix of cheddar popcorn and crispy caramel. I had a small sample and then purchased a small bag. It was not until I returned to our hotel that I discovered the sweet and savory flavor of this popcorn. The cheddar flavor is not what you would find at a grocery store. It's like they tossed the popcorn in fresh cheese. The combination of the cheese and caramel is out of this world. I returned before I left to get a medium bag. I should have bought four large bags like my friend did. My medium bag of popcorn was gone in two days. I can't wait to go back & I hope they deliver! :)

What can you say about this Chicago institution, Garrett Popcorn Shop, that has not been said? The Navy Pier shop is smaller than some of the other shops, however, just as good as the other shops. The popcorn is always fresh. The service is quick and painless. You never go wrong with the Garrett Mix (mixture of cheddar and caramel popcorn). So when at the pier, grab some popcorn.

Bomb dot com. Only the chicago mix. Nothing else compares.

You wont year anything else in this review for except if you dont give it 5 stars, you need to immediately setup an appointment to go visit an ENT. Ask to make sure you didnt get a staph infection in your throat, or something similar. Otherwise, any trip to Chicago without this popcorn is an E.P.I.C. Failure. You will appreciate this location has no lines on Sunday afternoons.

Heeeeeeyyyy!!!! Hello Garrett's! How YOU doin?!? Whenever I'm downtown (I live 25 mins outside the city) I've got to grab a bag of corn. Well ok fine, two bags: I need a bag of just caramel, and then I HAVE to get the Chicago Mix - since, ya know - that's what they're famous for and all. This location is at Navy Pier, INSIDE by the food court. It seemed like an updated location (meaning, prettier), but small just like the rest of them. The one employee I interacted with was friendly enough. I just don't understand how ANYONE has complaints about Garrett's popcorn. It's so fresh and yummy, and the flavor just stands above the rest! There's no comparison, anywhere.

Let's say you need to feed a demanding group of six adults and two kids a snack pronto that will please them all. Get in line and get ready- classic chicago mix of caramel and cheese will have them eating every last kernel!

I caved in. I succumbed to the pressures of friend and coworkers - one after another - and their barrage of forced patronage of Garret's. I owe each of them a portion of my spoils. We wandered in around 11PM, line was 10 maybe 15 minutes, and an easy wait. Some of the other locations had lines wrapped blocks long when we cruised past. This was far easier. I was told (demanded) to order the Chicago combo. While we ordered the staff offered us a few samples to make sure we didn't need any additional flavors. We tried the Carmel pecan and the smokey cheese (a special seasonal flavor). The Carmel pecan was delicious. The smokey cheese had a chemical taste to it. We stuck to the traditional mix and ordered a few huge bags for coworkers and friends to split. The employee was even nice enough to give me the size small bags (a huge stack) so that I could divide them up at home instead of cramming them into ziplock bags. Excellent customer service touch. They were making fresh batches of the Carmel and the cheese so as we waited we were offered more samples of their flavor offerings. The staff was nice and made small talk with us as we waited for our order. We munched on a small sample of the cheese and it was as good as the reputation it has. It leaves the classic orange powder on your fingers (plus some grease for good measure) but it's worth the mess. A few napkins and we were back in business. Overall, easy line. Great customer service. Delicious product. I'm bringing so much home you'd think I had tried it before I bought so much! My tummy and my coworkers will be quite happy.

This stuff is dangerous. Dangerous, I say! I'm so glad we don't have any of these in Boston. I'd weigh a ton by now if we did. Haha. I got a small tin can of the pecan caramel popcorn. So so good! A bit expensive though. The price was in the teens, and I thought that was a bit much for a small tin can. But, I still felt it was worth it. Unfortunately, most of it did not survive the plane ride back to Boston. Once you pop, you can't stop!

  • Awesomeness S.

I just thought it was decent. I wanted to be WOW'd. I expected to be! But it was just good popcorn. Nothing crazy amazing for me. I still recommend grabbing a bag.

  • Emily D.

I expected more. The Chicago mix (Carmel corn and cheese popcorn mixed) was good for the first few bites, but I have no idea how anyone could finish a bag. Also, be warned the cheese popcorn will stain your hand a lovely cheese like shade. I'm glad I tried it because it came so highly recommended but my advice is share with a few people and get a small. My husband and I got a medium and only finished about a third of the bag before feeling sick.

These shops seem to be all over Chicago! We walked by one from our hotel to our dinner location and I Yelped it and saw that it was everywhere! We stopped by the one in the Navy Pier and got the Chicago mix, which is caramel corn and cheese corn mixed. I really liked the caramel corn! I could've done without the cheese corn. They also give free samples if you want to try out different flavors! You can buy them in bags, tins, or even in gallons O_O

What's not to love about Garrett's popcorn. If you love popcorn, you'll love this place. The line wasn't too bad & they are really fast with getting you in & out too. I also appreciate that they offer a military discount too. You can ask to try flavors before buying them too. I love that they offer lots of size options too, since I knew I wasn't going to be back in Chicago for a while, I wanted to get a little bit of everything (well, almost everything). My husband & I ate quite a bit before even making it back home, cause it's addictive! LOL However, I did make sure we saved some to share with family back in Seattle. Next time I'm back in Chicago, I'll be visiting a Garrett's without a doubt!

  • Brian K.

Garrett's cheese popcorn is so amazing. Big popcorn pieces with just enough cheese mix that is flavorful and fulfilling. Once you start, it's hard to stop. I'm glad they don't post calorie counts...I don't dare want to know how many calories they're costing me. The caramel corn with pecans is also very good. When I miss Chicago, I miss Garrett.

    (5)
  • Jennifer P.

Ahh, I love Garrett's: the popcorn, the notoriety! The long lines? Notsomuch. This time around I ordered a small Kettle Corn and a medium Chicago Mix. I was a bit disappointed the Kettle had a bunch of cheese (and a few caramel) pieces...although I guess I can just say that it added to the variety. :) I love that they included napkins in our bag (and not 2-fold...these babies are tri-fold)! Fancy! Be sure to eat your popcorn within a few days, as it doesn't stay fresh for long!

    (4)
  • Kylie K.

The staff offered us samples of the flavors and recommended the local favorites. It's the most expensive popcorn I've ever had but also the most delicious.

  • Nelly M.

I was there last weekend and the staff is so rude!! We had just left the imax next door and obviously people stopped to buy popcorn and not only was the cashier bitchy one of her male coworkers was saying "you ain't gotta go home but you got to get the FK* outa here" referring to us customers who walked in after our movie. When it came to giving me my popcorn it was pretty much tossed at the counter, I get it it's packed they gotta work fast but this was just the employee being annoyed wanting to go home and customers kept waking in.. smh the popcorn is great but the staff sucks!!!

This review is for the popcorn as I ordered it off the website - not at a shop itself. Oh Garrett's...WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!! I have to give it to my girl Ebony K. for turning me on to Garrett's Chicago Mix. And for being greedy and not letting me sample any whenever she got some. I was forced to order a 3.5 gal tin myself. Now I can be the greedy one! Cause this stuff is DAYUM GOOD!! And I aint sharing! Okay, maybe I'll share with my hubby, J. The cheese popcorn on its own - Yummy! The caramel popcorn on its own - HELLO! Awesome!! Eaten together - Takes some getting used to. But next thing you know, you've been holding the tin for 5 minutes chowing down on the sweet and salty mix. Thank goodness there isn't a Garrett's in Phoenix, or else I'd be in trouble!! How I can make this 3.5 gal tin last me longer than a few weeks...I'm trying to solve that problem. That and getting rid of the cheezy staining from underneath my nails! LOL

  • Dung N.

Everyone was talking about this place! My friends, cab drivers, and anyone we came across during our trip. They are known for their caramel and cheese mix. Sounds gross!! The workers there are really nice and they gave us some samples. I liked their dark chocolate popcorn more than their Chicago mix, but the chocolate flavors are seasonal. They are only fresh the day of, so I bought a tin because they seal it for you. I had it filled it with caramel, cheese, and the dark chocolate. A small tin costs almost $20! It's expensive! My bf loved it!

  • Shelby J.

Oh Chicago Mix, you are so delicious. And just like their napkin says... love is messy. But oh so worth it. You will have remnants of the delicious cheese on your fingers, but that is okay. The line will likely be long. But the bonus of the Navy Pier shop is at least you are inside while you wait. Crunchy, salty and sweet, it makes the perfect combination. YUM!

the caramel corn is good mixed wit hthe cheese popcorn. but a bit too sweet .

  • Brad P.

Hey folks, when have you had caramel popcorn that wasn't amazing? Garrett Popcorn Shops makes excellent caramel popcorn, but that seriously isn't a tall order. I can't recall any point in my life that I've been disappointed by caramel popcorn. The Chicago mix is strange and I do not recommend it. Individually, the caramel and cheese popcorn is good. Mixing them, however, provides a significant amount of taste dissonance. Also, the small order is not small at all.

  • Dana D.

A couple of years ago my boss had a tin of the Chicago mix shipped to our office..I was hooked. Now move to present day and I am hanging at Navy Pier for my daughters cheer competition and low and behold I smell the familiar smell of goodness....just from the smell my jeans began to get tight around the waist. I headed to the line like a mindless captive and ordered the jumbo Chicago Mix. I told myself that I was just going to eat a little and share the rest with my munchkins at home since they did not get to head to Chicago. Now fast forward a couple of days....I have been hogging the popcorn. Only rarely do they get to eat it because I have almost scarfed the whole bag. I feel so ashamed...I really need to hit up a popcorn support group. But I am looking forward to the next trip to Chicago...mmm popcorn..

I'm not a huge fan of popcorn or anything---but hot dayum, this shiz is GOOD! A native told me I had to get the "Chicago Mix" which is a combination of Caramel popcorn and Cheese popcorn. Disgusting I thought. Here we go again, Chicagoeans throwing the 2 unhealthiest, fattiest, greasiest ingredients they could find and calling it food. But then I tried it----and there was no turning back. MATCH. MADE. IN HEAVEN. A must have in Chicago, a must try in life. A little under $7 for a Medium bag, which is WELL worth it and a good size to share (or not) ;)

Staff were super! Even gave a tip for great deep dish pizza! Yummy pecan & cashew caramel popcorn!

    (5)
  • Julie D.

I've eaten a lot of popcorn, but I have to say that this was surprisingly good. I think it's in the way the topping is incorporated with the popcorn itself -- it's as if they were one, as opposed to others that simply dump sugar or cheese powder on their popcorn. I ate an entire bag of Chicago style mix. The one downside is that they don't last long -- this is noted on their packaging, but I managed to get it back to CA in somewhat ediable condition -- otherwise, it gets soggy pretty quick.

No trip to Chicago would be complete without a visit to Garrett, this is a great stop but sometimes hard to justify because of the long lines. However if you can manage to deal with, you will be well rewarded. The popcorn here is an amazing treat, i typically avoid the cheesy popcorn and opt for Almond, Pecan, or Cashew CarmelCrisp Popcorn which is amazing. The prices are a little expensive however it is well worth it. If you are in Chicago be sure to stop in for at least a small bag, you will be glad you did!

The first time I visited this location I had a horrible experience with the staff, they were extremely rude. I wasn't going to come back to this location. I ended up going back only because my group of friends wanted too. I must admit, last night the service was on point ! So friendly and chatty. I will definitely be back for more of this amazing popcorn and friendly service.

Chicago city mix is my fav, mix of cheddar and caramel popcorn - sooooo good, sooooo evil! Long lines, follow your nose to Garrett's----if you miss them in the city, they are also in O'hare.....it's crack corn gone wild...soooo evil.

  • Shirley N.

Their reputation preceded our visit. One of the first things folks say when they hear you're visiting Chicago is to try Garrett's popcorn. With a three day Chicago Trolley and Double Decker hop on hop off, you can get a free bag of Garrett's. You're given a sample bag of the Chicago Mix - cheddar cheese and the caramel crisp. Hmmm, was good but not great. I didn't finish it. Then yesterday at O'Hare's, my friends wanted to buy some for home. I decided why not. I bought a small bag of the caramel crisp to take home. Woo Hoo. I'm glad I did. Tasted do much better. Crunchy, sweet, and buttery, and freshly made. A great treat and a nice token edible to bring home for friends and family.

Yum! Those delicious kernals of joy send me to heaven and beyond! I'm a huge fan, and it's always helpful when the service is as great as it was at this one! Thanks for making my day delightful!

The smell alone is amazing. We got the caramel crisp and nuts. I enjoyed that the popcorn was well coated in caramel. The popcorn was fresh, it had a great crunch but the inside still melts in your mouth. Sometimes caramel popcorn is stale but this certainly was not. I will say that had a hard time finding the nuts in the mixtures although we had 3 kinds. I enjoyed the taste but only could eat a little bit before it became too much. Brought some home to enjoy later.

Totally in agreeance with Carol. Located inside the labyrinth of Navy Pier shops, very close to Ryba's Mackinac Is (MI) fudge... Absolutely; no lines. In the middle of the 2 hour rain crunch that sent down concentrated torrents, I had to cross my fingers, hope the sun would peep back out in time for my lake sail, and find a way to occupy myself. Window shop and Garrett to kill the time. This popcorn is slathered in just the right amount of ingredients that could make you keel over from clogged cardiovascular city.... super, duper indulgent popcorn laden with everything that is heart-stopping...literally. I sampled a few things and then settled on the caramel crisp corn. Small, mind you. Uh.... after taking about 2-3 of the aggregated popped madness, it was definitely enough there. For my tastes, it was too sweet, so I had to mute it out with a glass of water. The corn was super crunchy, 'tis true. The flavor was all there..again, quite sweet. The overwhelming guilt of what I was ingesting made me just have to stop. Remainder of bag was brought home for my fam to sample. Couldn't say that I understand the fad here; closer to city center, there are lines out the door for it. As for me, glad I can say I've tried it, but waaaaaaaaaay ott popcorn.

Warning: highly addictive...once you start, you'll have a hard time stopping. Four of us shared a small bag of the Chicago mix (two little mouths and two big mouths). A great combination of both sweet caramel crisp and salty cheesy goodness. There is a reason it's the called the Chicago mix, two of the best flavors they offer combined. I now understand why people were walking out with LARGE shopping bags of popcorn...addicts. This is a MUST visit place in my book.

Been a Chicagoland native all my life and always loved this popcorn. Hadn't had it in ages and broke that dry spell last week when I was attending a conference in our wonderful city. The conference had Chicago-themed giveaways and I was delighted to see that one of the afternoon refreshment breaks included individual-sized bags of Garrett popcorn...Chicago Mix, of course. It was a huge hit...I saw people trying to take several bags at once. I devoured my own within the hour. And it fueled me to go this weekend to get a big bag for home so we stopped by the shop at Navy Pier. The line wasn't awful...I think we waited about 10 minutes, but by the time we left the store, the line had wrapped around the small rope outside the store. No matter, though, the staff gets you in and out so the line moves steadily, if not quickly. There were a couple of out-of-towners in front of us who asked us what they should get...we recommended they try the Chicago Mix, and while they were skeptical about the combo, they had a free sample and were sold. I think they ordered a jumbo bag. We took home a big bag of Chicago Mix ourselves, but couldn't stop there...we also got a small bag of just the cheesecorn. That stuff is just spectacular...covered in that delicious cheesesauce. Tried to wait to dig into it, but we finished off the small bag walking back to the car! The big bag lasted us about a day and a half. We ate most of it while it was warm and fresh, but we still happily ate it even as it started to turn stale. Make sure, if you get the cheesecorn, that you are somewhere you can wash your hands after. I thought Cheeto hands were bad, but it took me a while to scrub this orange off my kids hands. All worth it, though!

I love garrett's popcorn! It is definitely all over chicago, so I'm sure local people are sick of it! But here in the west coast we don't have anything similar to garretts so we go nuts over their popcorn. You can never go wrong with the chicago mix. It's a mixture between their carmel corn and their cheese popcorn! I brought home 3 bags on the plane and it's almost all gone!

Sure it's full of tourists but what would you expect at Navy Pier? May as well embrace it and get some delicious popcorn. Cheese and caramel are just pure magic together. A wonderful thing to bring on a ride on the Ferris Wheel.

  • Margaret R.

The bf waited 40 minutes for the popcorn...40 minutes!!! It was good though. Basically, they mix cheddar popcorn with caramel popcorn. It has a unique taste too it. I definitely preferred the cheddar though. Some of my friends didn't like it though...they thought it tasted like cheap cracker jacks.

    (4)
  • Melissa H.

This place is pure goodness. Their popcorn is a stand out! Especially the caramel and cheddar mix. It's the perfect combination of sweet and salty. The cheese popcorn has just the right amount of seasoning. The caramel corn was crispy and buttery. We took some home as gifts for friends and family and they agreed it was equally addicting to munch on. The two flavors sound off together but it really brings out the flavors when eaten together.

I have loved Garrett's popcorn since I have been a kid. We always get the cheese and caramel mix. I was planning to visit the downtown location to pick some up for me and my mom, but luckily I ran across this shop in Navy Pier. How convenient. There luckily was not a long line on a Saturday evening. My popcorn was prepared very quickly and I was on my way. It could have used a bit more mixing though. It tasted as good as I last remembered. Wish I lived closer so I could get some more fresh popcorn!

Garrett's seems to be the go-to souvenir for most tourists, but locals obviously favor it too, as evidenced by the poppin" line of Garrett fans. See the huge bins of freshly popped popcorn and Garrett workers mixing and shoveling your custom mix by hand. Smell the intoxicating aromas of butter and sugar, there's just nothing quite better!! *Chicago mix=cararmel crisp and cheesecorn-BEST OF SALTY AND SWEET Who woulda thunk to mix cheese and caramel?? Apparently, opposites do attract! This comes in a wax paper bag, rolled up to close. *Caramel crisp (can be mixed with almonds, pecans, cashews, macadamia nuts), is buttery, rich, sweet, creme brulee crunchy good for your munchies. I got a medium and this was packaged in a paper bag with a wire fastener. For those bringing it back home to your loved ones, I recommend getting a bunch of Ziploc baggies and sealing it as tight as possible to preserve the freshness. Caramel crisp travels wayyy better than the cheesy one. Cheese flavor loses its fresh/crunch factor practically the next day, so best to eat this right away. Perhaps, strolling through the park or navy pier!! It's addicting.. you've been warned. But don't even think about leaving Chicago without getting your fingers dirty with cheese.

  • Justin H.

Two words.. Chicago Mix. Insanely delicious and oh so addictive. They have the popcorn game locked down that's for sure. The popcorn manages to hold a crunchiness instead of being soggy or stale that a lot of flavored popcorn can become. And the flavors are not overwhelming such as being too salty or sweet. I get mine at O'Hare and I never go home without buying some to take home to my..well me, me, and me.

I have loved popcorn as far back as I can remember. We ran down to Evanston, IL to visit a cousin this past week and between stops at spectacular Korean eateries we visited Navy Pier. I've been to Chicago plenty of times but have never stopped at the Pier. There is only one thing that I can say of the popcorn at Garrett's. AMAZING. We purchased several jumbo bags without tasting as the line was out the door. I chose the Chicago Mix and let me tell you, I chose correctly. Having been out of this popcorn for near a week, I need more. Is anyone willing to send some to me?

  • Kislev A.

This stsore has a very short line. Thank goodness! It's true, the Cheese and Caramel flavors are great and it totally deserves its popularity. I'm not saying the flavor is one of a kind, but I would DEFINITELY get more when I come back. WHAT MAKES IS SO GOOD? They're not stingy with their flavorings. Each kernel and popped corn is covered completely with whatever flavor they are trying to put on there. I've had three different flavors and they there is NOT ONE popped corn that was not completely covered with flavoring. We've had the caramel, cheese and chocolate/almonds. They were all annihilated!

  • Nektaria R.

Can you convince me that popcorn is oh so good? That after I've already eaten my small bag of Chicago Style that I will still crave another bite. Just one more bite. Creamy cheesy, crunchy caramel buttery richness. Oh my. The girls at the Navy Pier location are very sweet and convincing as far as getting me to try something that I wasn't too sure about. Funny thing is that the first bite wasn't that big of a deal, it was every other bite after that which was heavenly.

  • JJ J.

I was told that we would have to stop in here, since It was my first time ever in Chicago, and no trip was complete without stopping to try this popcorn. I'm not a big fan of popcorn, but this was really tasty. That being said, i have no idea how people can drop $100+ dollars on 3.5 lbs of popcorn. That's just nuts. I also found myself greedily wanting to buy that 3.5 lb tin just so i can go walk to the back of the line and sell some of it to make money. I wonder if that would be allowed... =P

While looking for a snack walking through Navy Pier, we come across this little store with the most helpful, courteous, professional people you ever want waiting on you. The lady behind the counter was so engaging, I was himming and hawing on trying some new stuff. Poof, here comes two trial cups of what I was wanting to try (chocolate covered popcorn) and it was wonderful!! I highly recommend this place, bring Grandma, Grandpa and all the kids. Who doesn't like gooey great popcorn, whether you like it plain, buttered, cheesed, chocolated, etc. Side Note: Garrett Popcorn is included in the 2012 Nato Summit goody bag. Go figure. What a Chicago icon Garretts has become.

Well, well, well...if it isn't the infamous Garrett! I've heard about their popcorn for years, but have yet to try it (or visit Chicago for that matter). However, I finally had someone mail me a bag, they sent me the Chicago Mix (a mixture of caramel and cheese). I don't know what it is about caramel popcorn, but I always get a bitter after taste when eating it, and Garrett's was no exception (not necessarily disgusting, though). However, when eaten with the cheese, the cheese does offset the bitterness of the caramel. Now let's get back to the cheese, shall we? This is the most amazing cheese popcorn I've ever tasted. As corny as it sounds, I felt it just melted in my mouth with each bite. I'll definitely be getting all cheese next time.

Just had to try it since my friend that lives in Chicago always gets asked to bring back popcorn for people. All in all, it was average. Good but nothing to go out of your way for. The Chicago mix consist of caramel and cheesecorn. The caramel tasted like Cracker Jacks to me (popcorn freaks, no need to send me threatening messages for this comparison) and the cheesecorn just tasted like other ones I've purchased in large tin cans at the market. They give out free samples for other flavors but nothing stood out either. But hey if you absolutely love popcorn, you'll love it.

Word of mouth is how I learned of this very famous "Gourmet" popcorn. This company goes back to the 1940's. Very good customer service and people working at the shop seems enjoying in what they do. There is a line, so patients is a must and they individually packed each bag of popcorn to order. I end up getting 2 bags of Caramelcrisp and 2 bags of Cheesecorn as gifts, one bag of my choice for me of course!

  • Elizabeth M.

Did I get a bad batch?! My small bag of mixed popcorn was mostly stale! Also, my mix wasn't exactly 50/50. It was more like 30% cheese 70% caramel. Sigh, I drooled over the pics of Garrett's popcorn before my Chicago trip and was sorely let down.

  • Jeff C.

Cheesy, caramely, buttery goodness... what else do you need to know? What a perfect snack for your visit to Navy Pier. Heads and shoulders above your average caramel or cheese corn! Light, crispy, crunchy... just the right texture and balance of flavor. Love it!

  • Mimi N.

Chicago mix: caramel and cheese flavored popcorn. Like Rihanna so eloquently put it, "you da one". The popcorn at Garrett is definitely worth the buzz. I ordered the small bag and it was NEVER ending. I literally ate it for three days and it was STILL good. It is extremely buttery and you swear on your life you will never eat popcorn again but yet, you can't stop yourself. It's been a couple days since I left the windy city and I'm a little sad that I didn't buy a bag to take home. I think it's for the better though. A small handful of Garrett's popcorn will probably exceed my caloric intake for the day.

  • Bethany R.

Just average caramel corn...It wasn't horrible...but for the price I guess I expected more. Also the staff at the Navy Pier location is anything but friendly.

OMG, the Chicago Mix is one of the most addictive foods I've ever eaten. I just can't stop. The cheese is actually a sauce, not a powder like most cheese popcorn you may have had in the past. You may not think cheese and caramel go together, but try it just once. On the practical side, be prepared for a line when you go. Sometimes the line is out the door. A 20-minute wait to get your popcorn is not unheard of, so if you hate lines, try to find an off-peak time. Also, get napkins. Lots of napkins (or wet naps if you can get 'em). And something to drink. You'll need these things after you're done. Also, in case you're wondering, this stuff does generally stay tasty for a day or so after you buy it, as long as you close up the bag real tight. After that, stale Chicago Mix is one of the saddest things in the world. And yet, what happens is this: I take a tentative bite of the last bit in the bag and think "Oh no! It's gone stale!" Then I take another bite as if maybe it hadn't ALL gone stale and I just got an unlucky first bite... then I proceed to finish the bag anyway and pick the stale popcorn bits out of my teeth. I swear, they put something magical in this stuff.

I bought a small bag of the Chicago mix...BEST popcorn ever! :D

  • Andria W.

Love Garrett's! On this particular day I didn't actually buy anything but a colleague of mine walked away with a bag full of free popcorn... Score! The customer service was amazing! The cashier explained everything one could possibly need to know about Garrett's and was so patient with us tourists. Plus there wasn't a long line at all! If you're in the area, make sure you stop at this Garretts! You haven't known love until you've had the Chicago Mix! Just don't buy more than you can eat, the popcorn is quite stale after a day or two if not stored properly.

  • Kristin C.

The popcorn here is addicting! I got a bag of the caramel corn, and I made myself sick. I couldn't stop. I am guessing by "caramel" they meant "crack". I tried the "Chicago Mix". What the heck is up with that Chicago? Cheese popcorn and caramel popcorn mixed together? Do you do that to try and pull a fast one on the tourists so you can laugh about them behind their backs? It's weird, and it doesn't taste good. They both taste good on their own, but not together. Apparently it's all fresh, and has no preservatives, so you are suppose to eat it right away. They sell gallon tins of it. I wouldn't suggest getting that much though. You'll eat it all in one sitting and make yourself sick. Luckily there are like 100 locations downtown, so you can easily pick up a bag everyday, as a "snack".

I hung out with some friends on Michigan Ave, Chicago and went to this popcorn shop at noon. A long line was in front of this lovely shop. We waited for 20 minutes to get the best popcorn I had in my life. Even though I knew it is kind of unhealthy food, the flavor for the chocolate popcorn was so amazing. I even can not stop eating it. The cheese one is a little salted, but still very good.

  • Karen T.

We grabbed a bag of Chicago-style popcorn (half caramel and half cheese) while we were wandering around the Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier. We later discovered that there is a store at Navy Pier that is cheaper and the popcorn seems fresher. I'm usually not a big fan of popcorn but these were really good. A bit too salty and sweet if eaten separately but an interesting combo when eaten together. Their is a lot of cheese on the popcorn so be prepared for orange fingers. There are supposedly no preservatives so they don't last very long. They were starting to get stale when I ate some the next day but the caramel coated one kept better.

  • Faye F.

CHICAGO MIX all the way! Indulged in a few bags to bring back to CA for my friends to try and still remained fresh after a few hours of flying. Sweet and salty mix leaves your tastebuds wanting more. "I'll just have a handful" turns into "Ok just one more" until eventually you see you've committed to eating more than half the bag. This place is very efficient as they can get you in and out to enjoy the rest of the day. Every once in a while when a friend visits, I always suggest to stop by here and pick me up a bag ;)

Popcorn + Celiacs = LOVE Okay I have celiacs disease so naturally I eat alot of popcorn as a snack; so let's just say I'm experienced in good quality popcorn :) So addicting and so stickly delicous! The cheese popcorn is really cheesy and leaves you licking your fingers to get every bit of the powder-y/cheese flavor. The caramel popcorn is sweet, but not overwhelmingly sweet. You can taste the butter and hear it snap when you bite into the popcorn! YUM I'm so sad I can't find it in California, but of course I'm sure they ship anywhere in the US!!! I got the mix, which is Caramel & Cheesy --- Perfect combo... I recommend Garrett's Popcorn to EVERYONE!

  • Mary M.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! The best caramel corn I have ever had. I will never be able to eat any other caramel corn now. The flavor is dark and intense, the texture crispy. I had mine with pecans and mixed it with cheese corn. Everyone is getting a tin of this for Christmas this year. If you are in Chicago, make sure you visit a store. The employees work like machines - it's pretty amazing. You really have to see it.

  • Zulay V.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think cheese popcorn and caramel popcorn mixed together would EVER be good... but it's DELICIOUS... and addictive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's a must try. I know it sounds gross, and I know it's scary but try it!

    (4)
  • Patricia M.

They ran out of the caramel with nuts by the time I got to the front so I got the Chicago Mix (Cheese and Caramel mixed together, which sounds weird and gross but it's actually really addictive because of the salty-sweet combination). Neat tins make great gifts but I was traveling so I just got the bags.

  • Christopher L.

I'd suggest trying the bigger store on Michigan ave. Our caramel from here was kinda burnt and the cheese was really really too buttery. We tried samples from other store and it was a lot better. Overall, it's a bit overrated imo... but get the Chicago mix of cheese and caramel, tastes pretty good together.

  • Yesy D.

MMMM Garrett Popcorn!!! THis is the best popcorn ever! If you walk out with anything but the Chicago Mix you are going into the shop for the wrong reason. The popcorn is like butter in your mouth. The lines are usually long but its worth it. This is one of the only places I never complain about standing in line. I will wait rain, snow, heat, blizzard, as long as I get my Chicago mix. All you need to know is Chicago mix.

    (5)
  • Kayan H.

Been here twice, waited both times for about 15-30minutes. I usually don't wait that long even at the ladies room in a crowded club. But the caramel popcorn is ridiculous. I could eat it all day (and night.)

    (4)
  • Michelle L.

Such a staple for Chicago! I love all the popcorn they offer. I like to mix the cheddar and the carmel!

  • Vanessa U.

An (open) love letter to Garrett's Popcorn, Sometimes when I'm at work, I find myself thinking of you, drifting back on our memories of wonderful minutes spent together. When I was downtown today, I caught a whiff of your perfume on the air, and realized in that moment that, although my bus had just arrived, that I couldn't go on without you... I ordered your Chicago Mix, and I was satisfied, even when you left your greasy bright-orange stains on my fingers. Thank you Garrett's, i love you so!

  • Lisa S.

Wow. I've never seen a line wrapped around the block for popcorn before. And this was before Garrett's had even opened it's doors for the day. I recently went to Chicago for a weekend trip and was told about the wonder that is Garrett's popcorn. But every time I went to go buy some, the line was far too long that I cared to stand in. I finally found one at Navy Pier that ended up only being a half hour long (Some people waited three hours!) and it was worth the wait. I brought a large Chicago Mix home with me and I've been chowing down ever since.

  • Connie K.

I've only tried Chicago Mix and it's good. I even bought a bunch back to give to friends and family.

  • Nicole S.

I've been a huge fan of Garrett's popcorn for years and when I found out by accident that a Navy Pier location had opened I nearly ran people over trying to get me some!!! The Chicago Mix is the way to go, perfect balance of cheesy vs crisp sweet carmel mmmmmm. Be warned this popcorn is very rich and although it may seem a little pricey for gourmet popcorn it is worth every penny. The Navy Pier location is also extremely busy. Last weekend I brought a friend there who had been visiting Chicago for the first time to Garrett's and we waited at least a half hour to get our popcorn. It made me a little nervous because I had talked it up so much but he loved it! Any trip to Chicago must include a visit to Garret's ...oh and don't forget to grab some of the handy wet wipes you WILL need them!

  • Sarah K.

I'm a popcorn monger. Came here on a date at the Navy Pier. I've tried the popcorn at the Garrett's location in O'Hare, which is to die for, but I wanted to try a different location. This place is just as a good. I became a monger again, and ordered the Chicago mix. It doesn't get any better than that. The lines went fast, and we were in and out of there prompto to get in line to ride the ferris wheel.

    (5)
  • D G.

Yum!! Bought it in Chicago, the best. Bought it at O'hare airport, not as good.

    (5)
  • stacie s.

Worth standing in line any day. A must have while in chicago. The caramel is my favorite and the cheese was too greasy for my liking. Yeah, I get the smaller portions as it doesn't keep well. IF you eat too much that you will not appreciate it so much later. A nice thing to bring back home if you are visiting the Windy City.

  • Pourina R.

Whats the big deal? Its just popcorn right? Well that is what I thought... until I had my own taste. While visiting Chicago, I of course had to sample Garretts - the infamous popcorn costing up to $40 for a bin. What is it about garretts? I think its the quality of the ingredients: cheeses, caramels. When it's fresh and hot, the cheese popcorn melts in your mouth. Cheese and Caramel together, is a winning combo, but I prefer plain cheese. I brought a bag home for a friend. Unfortunately somehow, it never made it to her. I ate it all and I have no shame about it. I'm not even a popcorn fan. Its just so so for me. But when I started snacking, I couldn't stop. Day by day the bag shrunk and she never got her popcorn.

I wandered into this Garrett's looking to bring a bag of popcorn with me on a trip to give to my mother, who loves popcorn. Late on a Tuesday evening there actually were people in this Navy Pier location. I spoke with the woman behind the counter, told her what I was looking for, asked questions such as how long does it stay fresh, etc. She was very accommodating, didn't rush me, made recommendations and even suggested that I buy my popcorn at the O'Hare airport as I was leaving since there is a stand there and it would then be the freshest. She gave up a sale of her own for my satisfaction. (See next review). I'll stop back into this location in the future when I need immediate popcorn to eat while I'm town and not bring with me.

    (5)
  • Jess M.

Wow! This popcorn is SOOOOOO good and addicting. Everytime I visit Chicago now I will have to make a stop at Garrett's. Every flavor is so good but I recommend the Chicago style of course. The only real thing I would change is the fact that it's so RICH that I think that they would balance out the flavors by mixing the Caramel and Cheese with a plain popcorn. Eating the Cheese flavor on it's own can get overwhelming.

    (4)
  • Claire R.

Got the Caramel Crisp. So good. End of story.

    (5)
  • Kenneth C.

All of the people yelling "Get the Chicago Mix" are 100% correct -- the salty mixed with the sweet is very delicious. I don't know what they're using for the cheesy popcorn, but it's far better than other cheese popcorns I've had before -- and the taste combination is shockingly good. The Garrett's I buy my popcorn from is at the Citigroup Center near OTC -- I haven't had to wait in line yet! Be warned: the medium bag is huuuuge.

    (5)
  • Samantha G.

It's overpriced popcorn. It tastes just like the huge can you can buy from Office Depot or Staples at Christmas time. Lame.

    (1)
  • Jen G.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Garrett's!! The chicago Mix is the best! It's pricey, but well worth it! They even give you wet wipes for the cheese popcorn, and believe me, you'll need them!

  • Brittany C.

Recently I went to Chicago and everyone told us to go here and try the Chicago Mix! It is delish! I do have to say that the caramel is probably better than the cheese but together they are WONDERFUL! I am disappointed that I didn't get any nuts (pecans or cashews) with the caramel but I may have to order it online. Everything is made fresh and served warm! I never knew that there could be gourmet popcorn until I went to Garrett's! I didn't realize how popular this place was. It can go from nobody in line to having a 20-30 minute wait or longer! If you do the Chicago Trolley Tours, you do get a FREE sample of Garrett's Chicago Mix and they are not stingy with the sample! We brought back quite a few bags of this popcorn so others can enjoy this great snack! By the way, be sure to have a wet nap because the cheese popcorn will leave your fingers orange but you can lick them if the popcorn is "finger lickin' good!" Can't wait to go back to Chicago and Garrett's!

  • Linda C.

I ordered online. Popcorn (Chicago mix) is yummy but certainly not worth $31 for a one gallon container. My homemade caramel popcorn is just as good. Ridiculous and never again!!!

    (3)
  • Dustin W.

Probably some of the best popcorn I've had in my life. My SO was raving about it. I thought to myself how good could it really. We bought a mix or cheese and caramel. You can't stop eating this stuff, you really can't. I prefer this location since other downtown location is where all the tourists flock to.

  • Roger H.

My friend told me she was heading to Chicago and I begged her to bring me back some Garrett's. She never knew about Garrett's and she was from Illinois. Just one bite was all it took to have her and her mom hooked. Naturally they felt obliged to bring me back a fatty sized tin of "the mix" Simply the best!

    (5)
  • Ariza S.

The Chicago mix is a perfect blend of salty from the cheddar and sweet from the caramel combination. It's delicious, it's worth every cent your paying and you are going to want to come back for more so trust me when I saw do not DARE buy a small bag.

    (5)
  • Heather H.

I've yet to have a bad Garrett's experiance. The popcorn is a little pricey, but down right yummy! No random cernals or burnt pieces. Carmel melts in your mouth and then the popcorn is crunchy (no soggy carmel corn here). I always visit when flying through Chicago.

  • donna k.

I think that the name is better than the product. I have kids with peanut allergies and can't serve it. Over rated, greasy, and chewy. Not so natural tasting. There is a competitor on the north side which is totally awesome...try it...it's actually better! Try Wells Street on Clark and decide

    (1)
  • Napkin Freak C.

expensive but it's for the chicago experience. it's also larger popcorn kernels. check out the famous caramel or the cheese. enjoy!

    (3)
  • Amanda G.

We are huge Garrett's fans. Even if the people inside were rude and the popcorn was very expensive, we'd still be fans. But the staff is friendly, the popcorn is reasonably priced, and the popcorn is to die for. My favorite is the Chicago mix- cheese and caramel corn. The salty and sweet is to die for! And this is probably not a secret but they offer free samples all day of the Chicago mix - and it's not a few pieces in your hand either. Nice baggie sizes. Yum! Since this is the Navy Pier location, it can get super busy, but for us, the wait is worth it!

Awesome popcorn, but crazy prices. I prefer the Caramel, but the Chicago Mix is good if it's your first time here.

  • Angie P.

It's not the best popcorn I've ever had but it's definitely good. I would compare this to a tub of popcorn from Neiman Marcus and find this falls a little short. It's a definite must try if you're visiting the Chicago area, it is after all one of Oprah's Favorite things. It's just not something I'm dying to have over and over again. But I'm a definite Fan. Oh yea, there is a Garrett at almost every corner on Michigan Ave. so hopefully you won't have to wait too long. Anyhow, the line goes by pretty fast. The best one is the Carmel with nuts. The Chicago Mix is just too weird.

    (4)
  • Alex C.

It's one of Oprah's favorite spots for a reason. The popcorn is yummy, I am old school, so I love the caramel popcorn, but there is something here for everyone. You can usually smell it before you can see it, and due to its location at Navy Pier, be prepared for lines. Make sure to try this--

    (5)
  • Darlene R.

The best caramel corn (especially with cashews) I've ever eaten. Brought some as a gift for family and they quickly finished the bag. Once you start eating it, you can't stop. Delicious!

Visited on 10/16/2010 at 5:15pm. My friend's niece raved about the popcorn here and I was all excited to try the Chicago mix. Unfortunately, I landed up leaving the store empty handed. The store had a line towards to food court. When we actually got inside the store, the line came to a halt because the cashier had messed up a customer's large order. She went to the back to get the manager. For the following 10 minutes, no other register was opened, no other employee offered to start filling orders, and the manager basically ignored the fact that the line stretched out into the food court now. After watching other customers leave the line, I decided that popcorn wasn't this much hassle and left.

BEST PLACE EVER FOR POPCORN!!!!!!!!!MMMMMMMMMMM THE CHESSE CORN IS MY FAVORITE !!!!!!!!! the texture and flavor are explosive, every time i'm in nay pier I have to stop in Garrett's first....

  • A D.

Not at all a healthy choice but, it is GOOD! 4 stars because of the calorie-laden popcorn but it is sooo addicting and good. Cheese and caramel mix, my favorite. You have to try this if you happen to be in Chicago. They have a stand at Ohare so you could grab a bag when you leave the windy city.

Absolutely delicious popcorn! I really was hesitant about the Chicago Mix, but since we had a coupon for a free sample, I figured why not? Just wish it wasn't so dang pricey!

I am not even from Chicago but when I visited last year, i went to Garrett's for the first time and I am hooked! I just ordered a gallon of the popcorn online last week for $31!!! It was worth every penny! If you are in the Chicago area or even NYC, now they've got a location near Penn Station, you've GOT to have some of Garrett's popcorn! Go for the Chicago Mix of cheese and caramel! Melt in your mouth goodness!

Grew up on Garretts, now whenever I fly home it's one of my 'must haves' while visiting. A true Chicago tradition to introduce to anyone in town visiting.

Garrett's YUM! BEST Popcorn by far. A must have whenever we visit Chicago! Sometimes we 'make the drive' JUST to go to Garrett's. Yep I will drive 2 hours, pay 20 bucks to park, wait in line for 45 minutes and pay 30 bucks for popcorn. GLADLY! It's THAT GOOD!!
