FIVE GUYS : The staff was OK - there's not much service to be had at a place like this. The guy at the register couldn't figure out how to use my Visa gift card... but eventually we got paid up and in line to get our food. BURGERS : Burger was pretty decent. It's not Kuma's - it's in fact the complete opposite. Not bad, just apples to their bananas. I didn't know that the regular burger was a double - they do offer singles but keep this in mind when you order. AND FRIES : I was all on board with this place until the fries. The fries are so hot when they put them in the styrofoam container that the container actually starts to melt and disfigure. I know there's tons of grease in my meal from unknown sources, but I really didn't like knowing that I was eating something that had been in contact with melting styrofoam. Luckily, they give you so many fries that there were some (less questionable but still questionable) bag fries that were pretty tasty until they ran out of ketchup.

I'm sitting here at home after consuming a five guys meal, just waiting to start to feel terrible. It's been 5 hours and I feel great! And I don't handle greasy things all that well. And that's what's awesome about 5 guys - the positives of a greasy burger (=yumminess) , but it wasn't greasy (thank god, soggy burgers are nasty). Built just how I love it... perfect. And I don't think (burger- or fry-wise) it was too expensive. Small burger + small fry = ~ $7, and neither are small. The small fry is way too big for me, it would be nice to have a junior size or something, but that's about it. However, a regular soda is 1.99(!) - now I see where your profits are coming from.

Greasy delicious goodness! These words can describe the awesome double bacon cheeseburger I ate today. The guy behind the counter was super friendly, and the food came out fast (and plentiful, on top of the large order of fries, they dumped another heaping scoop in the bag!). No the burgers aren't gourmet and it's silly to even say they aren't 'the best burgers ever'- they just are what they are. Simple, made to order, loads of free ingredients, and greasy. Greasy. Goodness. Though we were slighlty bummed to find we had just eaten at a 'chain' (yah, we'd never heard of Five Guys before, who knew there were hundreds!)- it was worthy of our visit. Slightly on the expensive side ($25 for two double burgers, a large fry, and a drink), but I hope my thighs can be as forgiving as my wallet will be.

I'm a vegetarian Brit and have no qualms in declaring Five Guys Fries to be the best I've had in Chicago! - A veggie burger on the menu and they get 6 stars!

Update!!!!! Cajun style french fries Five Guys! Its like you read my review, and then proceeded to change accordingly to earn that fifth star. Thanks for listening to me

Being a man of a certain age, it had been awhile since I had indulged in the late night post-drinking cheeseburger. Sadly the experience at Five Guys fell below my expectations. The burger and toppings were quite bland and the powdered Cajun seasoning for the fries was acrid and bitter. Definitely not worth the hype.

It serves good burgers! Big portion and reasonable price.

I went to this place not having high expectations. I figured it would be similar to fatburger.. not really! The portion size varies greatly. I ordered my burger with bbq sauce.. and it was never put on there. There was a man that said hello to me.. and welcomed me since it was my first time there.. which I thought was sweet.. The burger was pretty good. I did not finish all the meat.. I liked the fries! the serving is HUGE! I mentioned to the same man that welcomed me to the place about the bbq.. and he proceeded to flirt with me.. how can they have messed up your order? you are soo pretty! ok! i just wanted to eat and not get hit on.. oh well.. it was nice.. I will go back to check it out. Matisse burger is better though.

I'll put them right up there, but still not the same ball park with In-N-Out. Meat needs to be seasoned a but more, it was cook perfectly but a bit bland. Fries are pretty good, nice and crisp, and for a small size, it was big enough to split between 2 hungry people. Their toppings are all compliments, so feel free to pile them on as much as you wish. And if there is a long wait and you don't feel like waiting, there's some free roasted peanuts for you to munch on. The verdict - good, but still not In-N-Out

I don't normally review chains, but it was my virgin experience with 5 guys. It's definitely not cheap like fast food, and priced around the same as FatBurger, which I hear has also recently made it to Chicagoland. The cashiers are very friendly, offering up fun facts about Five Guys' history and explaining the menu. To sum up: From the burgers menu, all come with 2 patties starting at $5...and have a pretty distinct taste I can't quite put my finger on. I ordered a cheeseburger and it featured hints of a Big Mac, In-and-Out, and a grilled charbroiled burger, if you can believe those can all coexist. The "little" burgers have 1 patty. All burgers you can customize the toppings with standard fare + peppers/grilled onions/A-1/bbq/hot sauce. The fries are quite good, very salty and potato-ey but a pricey at nearly $3, and the average person definitely can't finish a regular size order by him/herself. One extra thing 5 Guys has is an endless supply of free peanuts. I didn't see anyone do it, but it seemed like popping them and throwing the shells all over the floor (similar to the experience at national steak chain, Texas Roadhouse) was kosher. The burgers here are definitely top tier for fast food, but my bill came out to over $11, in thanks to the fries and drink prices; I dunno if they're that good....

i would eat here more often if there was one closer to me or at least more convenient. i came here recently and had the hamburger all the way. yumm! the burgers are super greasy and sometimes i love my food drenched in oil. haha fries were good. not as good as burger king fries.. hehe free peanuts, malt vinegar, prices are cheap, clean restaurant and fast and friendly service. oh and don't let the drink machine fool you. it fooled me once. :)

This place offers cheap, fast, goooood burgers with friendly service and a great location!! The burgers are juicy and delicious, stacked high with toppings if you choose, and the fries are amazing, the ingredients and toppings are always fresh. They always give you WAY to many fries and they are perfect! This is a great lunch spot but be sure to grab extra napkins, it can get messy!

Being partially from California, my heart belongs to In-N-Out when it comes to burgers. I was open to trying Five Guys based on a friend's review and chose to tell you about it. I would give the place a 3.5 out of 5 stars if I could. The menu is short and sweet, offering only the basic of needs at a place like this: burgers made with any topping you want from the list available, fries and drinks. I did like the free peanuts to eat while you wait. But unless you know about it, you wouldn't see the boxes of peanuts with paper cartons and a scoop b/c they get lost in the red and white decorations all over the place. The burgers are good but I still think In-N-Out has the best by far. Fresh ingredients were great but the burger did seem like it was pulled right from a day old plastic bag off the grocery shelf. At least at In-N-Out they toast your bun. The fries were delicious and possibly have a slight advantage over the West Coast chain. I didn't realize that the smaller, regular size was enough to split between three people! Yikes! Overall, I still stand with my opinion that In-N-Out is the best but Five Guys comes in at a close second.

I'm not sure exactly what to say in this review as I don't have any strong feelings about this place one way or the other. Is it a typical burger place where the quality of their food is a step or two above fast food? Yep. Are the fries greasy and crispy and addicting and terrible for you? Absolutely. Are the burgers just a-ok? You bet. I wouldn't go out of my way to find a Five Guys, but if I were craving a burger and it was nearby, then I'd walk in, sure. I'd walk out full and happy, but certainly wouldn't write home about it..

Soggy fries. I don't know if that was an anomaly, or if that's how they're supposed to be. Either way, not impressed. It just wasn't that great.

    (2)
  • Abigail L.

Considering I don't typically eat fast foods, 3 stars is amazing.. They cut the potatoes/ fries on the spot... burgers are good. Coke machine is all touch screen you can and flavors to your sodas, lemon, cherry, strawberry, you get the point. This is like high end fast food in my eyes.

    (3)
  • Char Y.

The free peanuts, awesome. The cheap price, awesome. The burgers, ok. The reason being that the patties were REALLY small, but otherwise they were juicy with lots of toppings. I think it's worthy of the price, but maybe a bigger patty would help? I miss in-and-out.

  • Mike S.

I've been coming here a while and it's nice that you get a lot of fries and can have your burger your way (where have I heard that before?). The 14th of Oct at half past three though, I was disappointed by the small crispy fries, probably the ones that'd been sitting there just cooking for hours, and the hot dog I ordered was missing 3 of 4 of the ingredients I'd asked for. Fail on the fries and the toppings. Taking a look at who was putting the food together, I should've known better than to believe they'd get things right.

This place really does not need a gimmick to get you in the door. They tell you that the place is the best value around and that they promote fresh ingredients. I would have to agree with them on both counts. The boxes of peanuts they have in the place makes for a fun little snack while you are waiting for your food. The decor is nothing special and the staff was friendly and efficient. I couldn't ask for anything more. I would agree with the fact that this place is an outstanding value. You get more than your money's worth when you order your meal from here. There is nothing special about the burgers here and what they put on them. They promote the use of fresh ingredients and that alone makes the huge difference and what puts them a notch above most of the other burger joints out there. You can taste this statement to be true. I like this place enough to go here more often than not. Whenever, I am thinking about a burger, this place will be crossing my mind.

OK, so I have been hearing about this place for a while now, so the burger hound and I went there for lunch, late lunch I should say. The burgers were just ok, nothing to write to Dad about, and not really hot for something supposedly just cooked. I do have to say the fries were outstanding! The peanuts were yummy too! Everything else, not so much. Although the hound I are willing to try this again, it won't be anytime soon, as there are so many other places with better burgers!

My husband and I started a "quest" for the best hamburger in town but ... now is over!!!!! Five Guy's is really the best! We love it, love it, love it!

  • Dayna C.

Worst $7.18 I ever spent! I know you're supposed to go for the burger here, but I had a yen for a hot dog. I asked for "Chicago Style" - clerk says, "the works", I say, "yes" - because when I want Chicago Style, I want the works and that includes Sport peppers. After waiting over 10 mins (for a hot dog and fries?!) I rec'd a split, overcooked, dried out hot dog dressed in: catsup (!), mustard, mayonnaise (!), lettuce (!), tomato, onions and mushrooms (!). it was the WORST thing I ever ate. (I could only stomach 1/3 of it). the fries, while a very generous portion, were NOT the best fries. They were bland. NEVER AGAIN!

Eat it fast, in-house, or it can get a bit soggy... Small fry isn't anything, large is what you need.

Awesome burgers. People go crazy for In and Out burgers, which are very good, but I prefer these.

    (5)
  • Rhoda Y.

Just ok and not impressed. After all the hype I finally decided to check this place out. I ordered the little bacon cheeseburger with everything. I have to say it was good but I've definitely had better burgers. We also ordered five guys style fries which were mediocre. I would probably come back if I happened to be in the neighborhood and in the mood for a burger but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.

    (3)
  • Arlene A.

I liked my burger and fries well enough. Fries good and crispy, and I like that you can get any number of toppings (for the burgers) at no additional cost. What I'm not a big fan of is the overall messiness of the place. Tables were a mess and the floor was a disaster area.

    (3)
  • Laurie O.

    Love, love, love the burgers.

  • Matthew M.

This was my first time eating at A Five Guys and it was a great experience. The service was fun, friendly, and genuine. More importantly, the food was amazing for a gourmet burger joint- plus they serve peanuts to snack on while waiting for your food. For under $20, you can walk out of there with a great meal for two people. I will definitely be eating at Five Guys again! It definitely lived up to all the hype!

  • Nick C.

    A solid burger!

  • Chris S.

Quality, fresh ingredients make this a great place for burgers and fries. They have peanuts to eat while waiting in line, and there is a sign that tells you where the potatoes for the that day's fries are grown. Overall a solid neighborhood burger joint.

  • Candace M.

I am a burger fan and can eat one any time of the day and this place has great burgers and fries...huge amount of freshly cooked fries with your burger...can't go wrong with that! 'nuff said!!!!

  • Sonia L.

Drinks -- love their huge selection. Fries -- LOVE. Burger -- Soggy for me. Funny that a friend of mine has the opposite opinions of fries and burgers from me -- he loves their burgers, but not crazy about fries. Others -- clean and open spacing is a plus, which gives it an additional star; foodwise it's only 3-star for me. For purely eating purposes I'd go for Flub a Dub Chubs nearby.

  • Jason W.

2 stars for having malt vinegar for the fries. Was this burger as good as they claim? No way. Processed cheese, under seasoned beef, and just a plain dull burger cooked on a flat top won't have me returning soon.

    (2)
  • Url R.

The plain burger here is better than M-burger. What helps is that you get a ton of fries. I prefer the plain fries to the Cajun fries. The Cajun fries were too spicy and you lose the enjoyment of the crispy potatoes.

    (4)
  • Kriss S.

The fries are the only things deep fried in the oil, thus making them vegan friendly. They're great when in a fat mood but nothing out of the ordinary or special. The portions are sizeable at times and marginal at others depending on the level of apathy displayed by whoever's on fry duty. If walking past, go ahead. Don't go out of the way (fun side note, a friend recently commented that the folks who frequently frequent this chain are cautionary tales of why it's NOT a good idea to eat anything from here more than once in awhile. So does that mean I could potentially be a fat guy or a teenage girl if I overload on fries? One can never know...)

  • Geoff A.

I had high hopes for 5 guys. I had heard a lot of good things. In the end they were just slightly above average. I had the cheese burger which was massive and pretty good. 1-10 I would give it a 6.5. I had that with the cajun fries. 1-10 I give it a 5. Like I said, the burger was pretty good. But not amazing or anything like that. Just a solid burger. The fries however were soggy, always a turn off for me. The flavor was good. I like the unique flavor that the peanut oil brings. But soggy knocks the score down big time. Isn't the goal of a great french fry to be crispy? My wife liked them even less. There is not one of these places super close to me and I guess that doesn't matter to since I will not rush back here. Sorry five guys. I'm just telling it like it is....

My go-to late night drunk food slash I'm craving food that will clog my arteries place. Initially I was like wow, this place is expensive for fast food. But then I realized it's made to order - no heat lamps, they toast the buns, you get more fries than any other burger place I've been to, you can order a ton of toppings such as grilled mushrooms (which I love), etc. This also makes for hilarious people watching near closing time on weekends. On a side note, I was also pleasantly surprised that their bathrooms were super clean at like 1am on a Saturday. Good work!

  • Jamie G.

In all reality, this is a great burger. I'm not sure where or why the comparison to gourmet burgers occurred. Also, the comparisons between Five Guys and other burger restaurants seem completely unwarranted. In my book, comparing one restaurant's burger to another restaurant's burger is like comparing apples to oranges. You should probably judge and accept Five Guys for what is is--not what ___'s is or what ____ served. So, what does Five Guys offer and why is it great? What you get from Five Guy's is a great-tasting, large-proportioned, well-topping-ed, super cheap, fresh burger with some very decent (cajun) fries. Five Guys also will affect its patrons to crave it randomly, but especially whilst walking or driving by any franchisee-owned restaurants.

All that wedding dress shopping instilled in us a great hunger for some delicious food. I had never been to Five Guys. OMG the french fries were pretty delicious and you get a large helping which is awesome. I love french fries and they spice up my life. I liked that you can choose your toppings. The decor was a little strange with the bags of potatoes all up in my business. The free peanuts are an intriguing idea but also a bit messy.

  • Matt P.

I think Five Guys holds the record for "Best Fast Food Burger" with me. They are fantastic. I'm not so much a fan of their fries though ... I think it's because they're fried in peanut oil. It's not that they're bad ... I just think they kinda taste off. However, you can get them cajun style, and they're not as bad!

    (4)
  • Kathy L.

Please stop comparing Five guys to In-N-Out...there is no competition. I will give credit where it is due and say that Five guys is pretty decent, the food is pretty good and its pretty cheap. The burgers are pretty big and the fries are fresh cut (I think). However, it is not In-N-Out. Call me an elitist...but I haven't found anything that quite compares to In-N-Out. Nice try Five Guys...your effort has been acknowledged.

  • johnny b.

One of the best burgers in Chicago. Might even be better than In n out. Haven't made up my mind about this. DMK, Bad Apple also good but more "gourmet". So consider them in a diff class. If I just want a standard burger this is so far my goto spot. Way better than M Burger. Kumas is really not that good its fine but way over hyped. I know, blasphamy, but the truth.

    (4)
  • yakob j.

A bit pricey, but wouldn't expect it too be so good. The burgers are delicious. Condiments like grilled mushrooms, Grilled onions, The closest thing we have to In/Out Burger.

  • mike s.

gave em a 2nd try on night when the family was out of town...actually not a bad burger. it's the fries that are terrible...overly greasy and salty and just too much. stick with the burger and you'll be fine

  • hanna y.

I don't know what the big hype about five guys is. I don't think it's that great. Yeah it's cool that you can have every topping in the world put on your burger, but I just thought the burgers were okay. I don't think I'd every crave five guys. However, the peanuts are a plus!

  • Jen C.

Love it! And I think so do many other people because this place is busy busy busy. So happy I finally got to check out this place. Beats out a whole lot of other burger joints I've been to. The "little" burger is a normal sized burger, don't be fooled! The "regular" burger has TWO patties in it. So a "little" burger is not to be confused with a mini burger or a slider! Choose from hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon hamburger, or bacon cheeseburger. Loved the bacon on the bacon cheeseburger - it was the perfect greasiness and crispness. :) Then choose all your different sides at no extra charge - lettuce, tomato, onions, grilled onions, mayo, mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, relish, and some other different sauces. Then get some fries...either regular or cajun (very slightly spiced up and seasoned). A regular sized fries is pretty darn big and good enough to share between two people...so I can't imagine what a large size is! I loved the cajun fries - I'll always get them if I'm here. Plus on top of all the garbage cans (that part is a little gross), there are boxes filled with peanuts if you want to grab some! All the employees were really friendly and helpful and nice. Love that too. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area!

Although it could never surpass the greatest burger of them all (from my hometown as well) it sure comes close. The freshness of all the ingredients and locally grown potatoes just make you feel good inside. And the hot dogs aren't bad either. Four stars because it's no in 'n' out

  • Stef B.

FiveGuys makes me wish I worked at Neo more than twice a week now. Working next to this place is heaven - especially with all the people that come into the club with leftover bags of fries. I can never get enough of their awesome greasiness and I still can't believe how inexpensive it all is.

i've been to 5 guys in Georgetown several times when visiting my sister, who lives in D.C. i've always thought of it as a great hangover solution, cuz nothing makes u feel better after a night of partying then as much grease as u can cram down your throat. so i was excited to hear about this 5 guys location opening up because i already knew it was a good ole greasy mess (just like i like it!). i have to say, reading the previous Yelp reviews was extremely helpful when ordering - knowing that a little cheeseburger and splitting a regular fries is the way to go. i haven't been to 5 guys in a year probably, so i'd forgotten. thanks Yelpers!! btw, those regular fries are ridiculously NOT regular!! they fill up half a normal brown paper bag with those fries. i read mixed reviews about the cajun fries, but i tell u what...those were good and spicy and i enjoyed them very much! me and my friend split and together we didn't even eat half the fries we were given. the little cheeseburger was just the perfect size...if i had had any more to eat i would have been too full! the restaurant is very large, we only had to wait less than 10 mins for our food, and it was very clean and the staff was friendly enough. i probably won't make an effort to come back to 5 guys because there are TONS of great burger spots in the city, but if i'm ever in that area and want a burger, i would surely stop back there.

Sorry, I just don't get it. The burgers and fries are okay, but I just can't understand why it is anything special. Seriously. And this concludes my review.

Went here last night for dinner. I have to say I'm a fan of the decor - simple, bright, clean and stacks of potato sacks - it reflects well as to whats being done inside. After getting a quick run down from the friendly cashier I went with the cheeseburger. It was nice to be able to choose your toppings from a rather extensive list that you could actually read. I hate not knowing what toppings a place does or does not have and having the cashier running through them all - not a problem here as everything is spelled out. For a Friday evening it was surprisingly quiet and the wait was not very long. Free peanuts will help tide you over, but weren't needed this time. The burger itself was pretty good, the cheese was melted into a good goo between the patties. Thankfully the burger is served in foil so you can peel it down as you go or it would've epically failed at staying in one piece. I don't even think ridiculous is accurate in describing the amount of tasty home cut fries you get. Unfortunately for me if you place fries in front I will keep eating them until they are taken away. I got about 3/4 down before I hated myself. I would go with the Cajun fries, they weren't as overwhelming as I thought they would be but still had a nice kick over the regular fries. Cost was my only major issue, it was $11 for burger fries and a drink. I realize this is in part due to fresh never frozen beef and independent potato farmers; both of which I can appreciate, just not for $11. I suppose next time I can get a little burger and knock a a buck and a half off and gorge myself on fries. There was also a decent amount of grease seeping through the bag, although it is a burger and fries joint so its not wholly a bad thing; I would be more concerned if there was no grease. Five Guys is definitely a place to check out if you love you some burger.

looks like cafeteria of the 60's, which is so cool! burgers are so delicious! this is one of my favorite burger place in the city; fries is so tasty and as a bonus plus free peanuts! great location and great place! definitely recommend to visit it.

After my Shake Shack experience I have had Burgers on my Brain! I was in a cab on my way to a friend's house and stopped at a light just 1 block away. My tummy growled and grumbled and I looked up to see Five Guys. My instincts quickly took over. I paid the driver and followed my tummy into the new burger shop. Pretty straight forward ordering process with one caveat, the regular size burgers are actually doubles so plan accordingly. I ordered a cheeseburger with no extra charge toppings of grilled onions, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and ketchup with a side of french fries. The burger was delicious, very juicy and nicely layered with cheese and toppings. The fries were stellar! Maybe it was the malt vinegar I copiously administered to them, but I barely was interested in looking up at the air show going on directly above and around me. The fries had my full attention. I would go back again and order the same thing in a hot fast minute! YUM!

5 Guys is good, but only if you are in the mood for it. The price points are EXTREMELY overpriced and you can never finish your meal. I hate paying $12.79 for a burger, fries, and a coke. It doesn't seem right. Overall the food is good and I'm likely to go back every now and then.

It seemed like I couldn't log into Facebook without somebody mentioning Five Guys so I finally decided to give them a try. We called in our order-bacon cheeseburgers with assorted toppings and both the cajun and regular fries. Even with calling it in and driving over we still had to wait at least 10 more minutes for our food. I was slightly annoyed. Then my husband returned to the car and I saw the greasy paper bags. This was either a portent of deliciously evil or disgustingly evil. I bit into my burger. It. Was. Amazing. Two patties but no greasy, perfect bacon, crisp green pepper and pickles, fresh tomato, melty cheese, sauteed onions and mushrooms all blending perfectly with mayo. And then the fries! I think I liked the plain the best with just a hint of mayo or ketchup. Oh but the cajun! Now I am thinking of how good the cajun fries were! Deliciously evil triumphed! I don't care that it was about $22 for two burgers and two fries. It was the best $22 ever.

This place was awesome!! The fries are sooooooo good, they are not greasy and taste like they are baked. The burgers are very flavorful. I even loved the roasted peanuts you get at the door :) Great fast service too. :)

Good burgers a little pricey for my liking but good and many free toppings to choose from. I'm from the west coast so in my opinion not as good as In-N-Out and twice the price, but a decent substitute for a home sick California native.

A friend of mine had never had a Five Guys burger, so after helping him move we were starving. Fortunately, this location is open until 1AM on Saturday nights, and I told him he was in for a treat. WRONG... WRONG. The dude got our order wrong, refused to remake it (he just handed us the ingredients we ordered but they forgot to put on--- WE HAD TO MAKE OUR OWN FOOD). During the fiasco, our burgers got cold (so they could match the fries we were served cold). There were no peanuts available, the place was a mess, and the loud, drunk crowd made the ambiance unbearable (I cannot discount the establishment for the crowd, though). I've had wonderful experiences at this location, but this one stuck out as deplorable. Thanks, Five Guys, for making me look like a complete jerk in front of my friend after raving about your burgers.

Friggin' awesome. Best fast food burger I've ever had, and actually better than most non-fast food burgers I've ever had. All of the toppings are free- lettuce, tomato, onions, mushrooms...and tons more. They give you sooo many fries you can definitely split an order and they have malt vinegar for them which you don't find just anywhere. $12 for 2 cheeseburgers with everything and a huge order of fries. This is hands down by favorite new late night spot, perhaps I'll give it a whirl sober next time.

Love the sacks of taters laying around this place. LOVE that you can put whatever you want on your burger without paying an arm and a leg for it. Love LOVE the bags of hand cut fries you can buy here. Hand cut fries... need I say more? $5 for a giant sack of spuds... no, I can't say more. Just yum!

Feeling the need for some good fries and Epic was closed we strolled over to Five Guys. Char Hot dogs??? Ok...I may be smitten with the hot dogs but the fries were OK. They seemed a bit on the dry side. Five Guys is definitely better than your regular fast food joints but nothing I would go out of my way for.

ehhhh. jaded review since i've experienced in-n-out. kudos to five guys for the ridiculous amount of fries they give you (i will say their fries are better than in-n-out) - plus the free peanuts - plus the wide variety of condiments and toppings available to put on your burger. overwhelming. i wasn't feeling too crazy, so i got standard toppings on my burger. i wasn't wowed. the meat was pretty thin and not very flavorful. might stop by again if i'm in the area, but i certainly wouldn't go out of my way to eat at this place. although... i did notice they're open pretty late on the weekends; after a few drinks, i'd probably give it another star.

I thought the burgers were pretty good. You can pick any topping for free I piled on mushrooms grilled onions and BBQ sauce on my bacon burger. I am glad you can pick anything thing because the price is a little high for a fast food type resturant. The fries were good but the amount of salt on them made my heart cry when I was done. I would probably go here again but I won't go out of my way to do it.

The burgers are pretty good, but I don't see the comparison b/w Five Guys and In N' Out, b/c In N' Out is the booooooomb!!!!!! It's one of my fave burger places, but unfortunately it's only on the West Coast. For the price though, Five Guys is legit and serves a good burger, nothing special. However, I'd pick Epic Burger over Five Guys anyday!

If you are craving a burger and don't want to spend $10....or go to Burger King, this will work. Is it the best burger I've ever had? No. But its better than the fast food places. They give you a ton a fries and they are pretty good. I do like all the choices of topings for your burger with no extra cost....

Five Guys would deserve Five Stars if it wasn't so freakin' expensive! This ain't no pub burger joint with 20 fancy items on the menu like your infamous Kuma's over there--just a nice typical simple American fast food style kind of place. For months I had heard nothing but good things about this place. I used to work at an upscale restaurant in downtown, and our chef would always rave about Five Guys' burgers. Alas, I never got around to try it. Just the other day, I went to pick up my favorite pair of ancient leather boots from Gus's Shoe Repair across the street, and the smell of grilled patties and crunchy fries lured me into Five Guys on top of my persistent curiosity. I liked the simple menu and how there were only a few options to choose from. A girl like me has a hard time making up her mind sometimes, and sometimes I just want a menu that makes my mind up for me. Walked out with a small bacon cheeseburger and small fries, my total was over $7 without a drink! Everything is ordered separately. No combos. No specials. I told myself that this better be damn worth it. Waited for a good 10 minutes until my ordered was called. Was very satisfied about the portion size as the small looked like a regular to me. The small burger and small fries alone filled me up pretty good, and I'm dying to go back to see how big the large one looks like. After reading all of these great reviews about their cajun fries, I'm severely disappointed that I ordered the regulars fries which was still great nonetheless. Had the perfect blend of crunchiness and limpness to it--just wished it had a tad more salt. I guess you could add your own though. Good thing is that they're fresh cut! The bacon in the cheeseburger was crisp to the max which is how they should be in every burger. I hate it when they're soft and chewy. Whatever sauce that was in it was indescribable. Yes, I've only experienced Five Guys once, but I'm definitely going again. Soon.

I heard a lot of good things about this place so i tried it out, unlike everyone i talked to that enjoyed the fries the best i enjoyed the burger. the fries were fresh and i like how they fry everything in peanut oil but they were just eh in my opinion.

I love Five Guys so that's not up for debate it is what it is, I have been to the other location on the western edge of Lincoln Park and reviewed it so I guess I will just compare them. This one is much more accessible and much larger, if you want to have a better experience this is the better choice. This also seems much cleaner and actually allows groups of more than 4 to sit next to each other without shutting down the place.

This place just opened near to where I recently moved. The burgers are great and you can add a ton of toppings for free. The fries are ok, I prefer them to be a bit more on the crunchy side. The burger is worth going back for and the service is quick and friendly. Its cool that they display where the potatoes are from. On my last visit the fries were from Quincy, WA which is really close to my home town. Nice to see them using fresh ingredients. I will be back.

Would you believe Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin from Spider-Man fame told me about Five Guys? It's true. Well not totally true, I first saw it once while walking to the Graham Crackers comic shop in Lincoln Park last year. The thing that made me interested though, was reading an issue of Dark Avengers Norman Osborn told his assistant to go get some Five Guys burgers for him and The Sentry. That Brian Michael Bendis, such a clever writer. I just moved to the Lincoln Park area of Chicago not even a week ago and on the first night here we did some driving and walking around the area and I kept seeing it, needless to say, my interest was piqued. I passed it one more time today to go get my weekly comics (Wednesdays are new comic day) and I didn't even think about until I got home. I was hungry and thought to myself, "Well gosh darn it, I want to try Five Guys!" When I got there there it wasn't busy so I got my order in right away with about a 5 minute wait for them to make it, which really isn't bad since they actually make the burgers and fries right then and there. After I sat down to eat, a line really started to grow so I was lucky to get in there when I did. I didn't know what to expect when I unwrapped the foil for my burger but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was the classic hand formed style of burger I remember eating when I was a kid at places in Kenosha, Wi, like Andy's Drive-In and Big Star, which also happens to be my favorite type of burger (sorry Kuma's!) I was also excited to see that a regular size cheeseburger includes 2 patties, extra greasy, nice touch. The only thing I was sad about was that I didn't ask for mushrooms and they still put them on my burger, but I was a trooper and just picked the off, I really don't mind since I've been picking them out of my food for the better part of 17 years (dang, Mom). The fries on the other hand weren't as amazing as I kept hearing. I like to judge fries on whether or not they can be eaten with ketchup or not, if you don't need ketchup, they are awesome. I don't like my fries too dry and these were a little dry but still good with ketchup. They were nice and thick, too. That's always a plus. All in all the it was very delicious and I definitely plan on going again, next time with friends. It seems like a good place to go and just eat and hang out with some peeps for a while.

pretty average. the workers there are very nice. the hot dogs are not like chicago dogs, but still good. fried instead of boiled which is also yummy. the staff is friendly and the burger was loaded. Wish the bread was a little sturdier, since the burger gets pretty wet. What pissed me off were the fries. Both the cajun and the regular tasted like fried newspapers. Had to thre both out, just ewwww. Would come here again for hot dog, even if it had mushrooms on it, CRAZY!!

  • Stacie K.

I love these hamburgers. The only other hamburgers I enjoy quite this much are from in-n-out. Otherwise, burgers aren't really my thing. I always get a little guy w/cheese, lettuce, tomato and extra extra extra pickle. but sometimes, it doesn't seem like extra extra extra pickle (which is why there's 1 less star). I LOVE their cajun fries, but every now and then, I get regular..just because..both are great!

I head to this particular Five Guys at least once a week. I love how you can customize the toppings on your burger or hot dog. The staff at this location is always interactive and very friendly. By far the best burger joint in Lincoln Park. I bring all my out of town visitors to this place!

This is a solid 3. Really solid. If I could give a 3.5 or even a 3.6 I would. The first thing that struck me as I walked into Five Guys was the decor. The place was immaculately clean, everything was red and white, and the path from the door to the counter was outlined with hundreds of bags of potatoes. When we got the counter, the menu was elegant in it's simplicity: burgers, fries, hot dogs. The one guy who took our order was very friendly, and seemed legitimately excited about the food we were about to eat. So how was the food? I got a burger, and split a bag of fries with the GF. The burger was okay. Imagine if a McDonald's hamburger actually tasted good, and you'll have an idea of what a Five Guys Burger tastes like. BUT- and this is a big BUT- Five Guys ONLY cooks it's burgers well done. They actually have a sign that says "All of Our Burgers are Well Done and Juicy". Clearly no one told the maker of this sign that well done burgers are NOT juicy. Or at least not as juicy as they could be. I like my burgers red, juicy, and preferably still mooing. My primary reason for not rating Five Guys better is this one fundamental flaw in their burgers. Well done only. The fries, on the other hand, were perfect. Thick cut with the skins still on them, plenty of salt, and just a hint of grease. Overall, Five Guys is a pretty solid, classic burger place. Now if they'd just stop overcooking their burgers I would GLADLY add another star to this review.

  • Gregg L.

Great burgers hands down. If you don't request a single they will give you a double though. About 20 different toppings you could put on it. And a regular order of fries is humongous! It comes in what looks like a medium drink cup. I can't imagine how big the large is.

    (4)
  • Steve L.

Any time you plaster your storefront windows with 5-star reviews from years past, you better put out a 5-star burger. The burger I got hit the spot, but was smaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall for $6. I mean, yes, it comes with two patties, but two dry patties do me no good. Also, I don't dig it when a place forces their staff to say sh*t to whomever walks in the door. It feels fake and they wear it on their sleeves. I can't and don't blame them, of course, but you'll never sell me on false staff satisfaction. Oh, and STAY OUT IF YOU HAVE SEVERE NUT ALLERGIES! They've got peanuts everywhere. Otherwise, the place is clean and the people are nice. I just felt like I was set up with incredibly high expectations and let down pretty hard. Give it a go though!

Known for being a cheap date, I figured, "Mr. President can't be that wrong." So off we went to Five Guys Clark location. No frills, no fuss. It's a burger. That's all you need to know. No secret sauce, or surprise ingredient. The peanuts you get while you wait are part of the experience at Five Guys. It is never crowded. Prices are reasonable. Nothing fancy. It's a burger.

  • Heather D.

There's a lot of hype around Five Guys so I had some high expectations. I really just went in for some cheese fries and was bummed to learn that they didn't have them -- only regular & cajun. Fine, I got cajun. Unfortunately, I didn't love the spices -- something was just a little off for me. I'm sure the fries were fresh but they were not all that crispy -- almost soggy, really. So, The Counter gets my vote if you are looking for good cheese fries. (and, FYI, any "speciality" burgers because Five Guys is really just bare bones burgers -- no fancy ingredients here.)

  • Abby G.

I was so hoping this was totally In and Out with a different name, it's not. However it is good, just be careful what size fries you order. We ordered a small and it was plenty for two. This country has to watch its weight and these 5 Guys aren't helping. For good food ample portions you won't go wrong, it is pricey so take plenty of cash.

Best burger in Chicago. A ' keep it simple' philosophy is what works here. Meat/Cheese/Side/Drink. DONE. To hell w/ the other guys. This place rules. 5 stars.

One of the best "fast food" burgers around. I got a bacon cheeseburger and I was very impressed. The burger had high quality meat, was cooked just about perfectly, and had a nice meat to cheese ratio. The bacon was also perfectly crispy, and the tomatoes, lettuce and onions were surprisingly un-greasy which balanced out the burger and cheese nicely. The cajun fries were good but not as perfect as the burger. Worth the 10 minute wait in line!

    (4)
  • d b.

I've down graded them to 3.5 stars because I feel that for the price I should get more meat on the singles and a more consistently juicy burger which I expect at this price point. They have good fries and the quality of the produce is above average so I think we're all happy to have graduated from BK and McD's.

  • DS M.

Greasy, greasy and greasy. If you're looking for quick burger and some grease this is the place. Don't get me wrong, grease is tasty. I just don't want anyone to have the impression that these burgers are full of meaty flavors. Just the fatty flavors. Oh, and the burgers are topped with a mountain of condiments (half of which are sauteed). I should point out that the greeter at the door was especially nice and he also wandered around to make sure everyone was doing good. Thanks guy. You're alright.

    (3)
  • Mike Z.

Pretty good burger but not the best. Fries are pretty good too and you get a ton of them. Large, clean seating area. Free in the shell peanuts are a nice bonus.

    (3)
  • K B.

Meh - whats all this fuss about?? The burgers are fine, on par with Wendy's, the fries are not as good as McD's, so why is everyone still raving about this joint? Maybe the problem is that when I think about a great burger, I think of a thick, medium-rare juicy patty, NOT two (or three depending on which burger you order) squished, thin and cooked beyond-recognition patties, drowning in so many toppings that it stops being a burger. Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I want to actually taste the meat - the toppings should be an afterthought, not the main event. Fost a food chain burger, these aren't bad, but I'd choose a corner dive greace-pit any day for my burger cravings - there are plenty of those in Chicago that in my opinion, are far superior.

  • Brendan F.

The thing about this place is the excruciatingly obnoxious atmosphere. That and the fries are totally blah. It is admirable that they are going for the just-crisped Dutch style but they just fall flat. Underseasoned and starchy. They should get an acoustics expert to deal with the ridiculous cacophany that erupts in concrete boxes. And the completely ridiculous overkill of all the self-promotion is depressing. Try providing something more friendly, or at least neutral, please. The burger itself was actually pretty good for what it is- a fast food burger. Price for a burger, fries, and soda? $12. For fast food, that's obscene. I've been had once, they will not get me again

  • Kara M.

i'm from Va so i'm used to five guys. i was hoping this place would open up before i moved from LP but it didnt, however i was in the neighborhood yesterday and decided to stop by and grab some food. we split a bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions, bacon and bbq sauce, a reg fries, and a reg drink and we were more than full. the fries overflow from the cup and into the bag and the two of us couldn't even finish them off! the fries and the burger were super fresh which will bump them up from a 3 to a 4 star even though they forgot to put the bbq sauce on the burger. all in all, if i'm in the neighborrhod i'd def go back, it's a solid place

    (4)
  • Michael G.

This place is my new favorite burger joint. Cheeseburger was very good, and the fries remind me of being on the boardwalk at the beach. They give you so many fries in the large serving that you can split them between 2 people. It's a little pricey, but well worth it.

    (5)
  • Donna J.

i like this location better than the clybourne shop. parking is worse, but the layout of the place is better. i feel like you can walk around more comfortably and there is more space between the tables. i recall having my burger messed up at the other location, even though i repeated it 3 times to the person taking it, but didn't want to wait to get another burger since it took awhile to make the first one. got my burger exactly as ordered and the fries were perfect as usual. since there isn't an in-n-out within a 7 state radius i can enjoy five guys. in chicago i will go for five guys, vegas is in-n-out as many times as possible, and when in ny i will definitely visit a shake shack. love me some burgers.

  • L. W.

The burgers are pretty decent- not the best I've ever had but I'd go back for one- but the fries were absolutely horrible! It was funny but eating the fries made me feel like I was eating a potato straight up- they even had a slight dirt aftertaste! Weird and very unpleasant! It is funny, too, because they have all these signs posted throughout the joint proclaiming how great the fries are. Maybe those are the "B" critic reviews like they do for movies?!? I forced myself to eat a few to justify the cost but I would say at least 90% of them saw the trash and not my stomach. Never again will I order the fries. Still hunting for that "best burger", too......

What is all the fuss about? We were excited to see that this was going to open, and heard such great things about Five Guys. Then we finally made it there to eat - over priced and completely pedestrian food - and the fries were LOUSY (limp and soggy). Won't ever go there again.

  • C S.

Five Guys is awesome. I lived on the west coast and love In N Out just as much as everyone else but Five Guys satisfies my withdrawal from In N Out. The place is always clean, service is fast and the burgers always come out hot. Fries are decent but the burger is where its at.

    (4)
  • Andre C.

I used to live in DMV so I've been enjoying Five Guys since their nascence. You really can't beat the taste/quality for that price. Yeah, it's greasy and yeah, it's comfort food but it's worth it.

    (5)
  • Jenna P.

Personally I'm not a fan of 1.5-inch thick monster slabs of meat piled so high with toppings that you can't fit it in your mouth, so the entire burger falls apart. Five Guys is FAR superior. Regular burger comes with 2 thin meat patties, well-seasoned, juicy, and absolutely delicious. I get the bacon cheeseburger and it comes with tons of thick bacon and cheese YUM. I've tried the regular fries and cajun, and both were incredible. One order of fries is plenty for 2 people. I've been here late at night when it's very crowded, but the food always comes out very fast and somehow they manage to keep the dining area totally clean. Love it!

    (4)
  • Kate G.

I like their fresh burgers and fresh cut fries (reminds me of the burgers at In N Out in CA) but the fries tend to be soggy so I always have to ask for well done. The seasoned fries are ok because they add more flavor to sort of regular fries. I like how fast they are and I enjoy coming here every so often.

With peanut shells and fallen fries abound, they do a great job of keeping this location clean. The fries generously fill your bag and are great for sharing with friends. If you are going solo, it can be an expensive meal. A burger, fries, and a drink can run you close to $12. While I think the burgers are great, if you don't like a lot of toppings, you kind of getting taken advantage of on the price of the burger. All things being said, it is a good location of this growing franchise.

My mouth is literally watering just thinking about the burger I had here for dinner. Perfect size patties and all the extra toppings I want for FREE! I've had some decent burgers in the city, but this place is the best by far! The regular fries are sharing size and if you want a little extra kick, get the cajun fries and sprinkle some malt vinegar on 'em. The staff is friendly, food is ready fast, and it's freaking tasty as hell.

i was the happiest person when i found out 5 guys had made their way to the midwest, finally. it's exactly the same as it is on the east coast. you can count on having a great fresh burger and amazing fries!!! i love that they give you a cup of fries and then fill the bottom. it's reasonably priced. 5 guys always hits the spot!

Great friendly service, quick and cheap burgers that taste delicious too! I always go for a cheeseburger with ketchup (keep it simple) and a small Cajun fries.

  • Jim M.

Five guys is one of those places that everyone likes because it is a bit better than the average burger and fry place. The burger is tasty and so are the fries but a meal (burger fries and a coke) is about 14.00$. Think about that, 14.00$... that is the same price for a burger, fries and a coke at Kuma's or Lockdown and their food dwarfs Five Guys. If they were a bit less concerned with gouging their customers on price I would give them 4 stars easy, but they know they have a slightly better product than most so they overcharge for it. Luckily for them Lincoln Park is saturated with places that are not only overpriced but also suck, so since their food doesn't suck they clean house.

    (3)
  • Yak Y.

Yeah they are bad... Zero attention to detail. Twice in a row they have completely messed up my order.. Like not even close. Too busy trying to close up than focus on what the customer a usually ordered. They would be better if they were half the price but they market themselves as gourmet so you got to produce the goods, it's really expensive. Clarke and Fullerton venue.. No thanks, head to 'Butcher and the Burger' on Armitage for a far superior burger.

  • Frances X.

This place is so disappointing! I hate to write a review like this because the service people are very nice, but the food is so terrible and the price is so high! Look: a hamburg is about $7, a cheese burger is more expensive. My mouth dropped when I walked into the door and saw the menu prices. I was expecting a price more like than of M Burger: around $3 or $4. Then, the real blow came. My hamburg tasted awful. The patties were so dry it hurt my throat to swallow it. Besides, it had no taste. I had to get two little patches of salt to sprinkle over them. The fries were dry too. You only want to eat them when you soak them in ketchup. Good fries don't need ketchup. We ended up throwing all the fries. I walked out of the door, wondering why this place is in business. McDonalds have better fries. Are they just having a bad day?

Great place for a quick burger fix, sure you can get fancy and hit au chevel or u naming Burger but for a hit the spot, burger this never disappoints. For me I love that the standard toppings are anything but, they make my burger with everything I could ask for and just like Al's beef the hand cut fresh fries and perfect!

Came here just for some cajun fries. Upon first taste, I just thought it was ok. As I ate some more, it got a little better but nothing that I would return back to this Five Guys for. It was also dead empty on a Sat night at 8:30pm. But kudos for the guys working cuz they were very animated and seemed like they were having fun making our food, lol!

First time Five Guys experience! And it was everything I expected!! :) juicy burger with all the fixins. And the fries...yummmm!!! Cajun style is the way to go! Great customer service too...the guy who took our orders was soo sweet and excited that it was my first time! I'll definitely be back! :)

Five Guys has always has a reliable "good eats" burger! But this is not the reason for my review. My review is specifically for the guys working at this location. Probably one of the most friendliest staffs at a chain causal restaurant I have EVER had the pleasure to experience. It was my boyfriend's first time ever having Five Guys and they had us both laughing hysterically. They were all cracking jokes to one another and having a great time with each other, which of course in turn, makes every customer have a great time! They were just genuinely happy people! And we left with smiles on our faces!!!

You already know the general details--big, messy, drippy burger, big old mess of fries, cool drink machine with too many choices, high price tag, blah blah blah. You know this. Now here's why you need to go to THIS Five Guys. The employees here are just so friendly and cheerful you'll end up standing around chatting with them. And it's so clean it smells like cleanser.

Five guys strikes me a great compromise between the all-too-familiar fast food burger joints, and the $12.00 gastropub burgers. Price-wise, it's right in between. For $6.49 at a Wendy's, you probably get the whole meal with fries and drink. Here, you get a two-patty half-pounder which included your choice of many toppings or condiments. But everything else is "a la carte." Two of these big burgers, a shared large order of fries and two bottled waters ran about $23.00. Not too bad, but I was expecting less than $10.00 per person, not knowing what else to expect. The place is clean. The staff is friendly, and the service not so fast. That said, the burgers and fries were very old-fashioned delicious. With this style of burger, there is no deciding on rare to well-done. They're just all prepared the same way, as they would have been in an old burger joint. There is the choice of a 1/4 pound burger, too. But I think I'd always want that half-pounder myself. All the topping choices add some fun to the experience, not to mention the flavor of the burger. We were topping piggies. We pounded down those burgers in that no-frills eat off the wrapper ambiance, wiped our mouths with the single paper napkins, and savored the fresh and tasty fries dipped in ketchup. Definitely a 7 or 8 on a your 0 to 10 burger scale. Also a good casual burger stop and a nice little quick escape at Fullerton and Clark.

Basic Five Guys. Not much different than the other locations I have been to. The difference is that this location was a little dirty but it is the city. It's a busy location. The food was good and came out fast.

I really love Five Guys. My first time was in Green Bay. Then they told me that I can find those guys here in Chicago. I didn't actively search for them but when we were done with our appointment and searching for a joint to grab a late lunch, Five Guys caught my eye. My sister and I had the little cheeseburger and Cajun fries to share. I asked the lady at the counter if the Cajun seasoning was spicy hot and she said no. Don't get me wrong, I love hot foods but my sister doesn't. So her first bite of fry and she was airing out her mouth. It's a little spicy I would say so if you don't care for spicy fries, stick with the regular fries. Burger was juicy and delicious although I'm not fond of the chopped onions, I prefer rings. It's all good though. Great tasting food, reasonably priced and pretty fast for fresh cooked. I'll be back for sure!

I wish there was one closer to me. I love this burger. This is exactly what i want from a fast food style burger. Classic, sloppy, greasy but fresh all at the same time. The fries are ok, but nothing special to me. Also, i wish the burger was just a buck or 2 less. It would be easier to justify. But it won't stop me. I know it's a national chain, but I don't care. Five Guys is possibly one of my favorite burgers in town.

If restaurants were required to have truthful names, this place would be called "You'd Be Happier If This Were A Wendy's Location." No thanks.

I'd like to give props right away for being open at 1:30 AM, but the guy at the counter looked like it. Dude needed some Z's! Anyway, we went to this Five Guy's twice in the middle of the night. First time to check to see if they have milkshakes (they don't) and the second time to get a burger and fries. I think that the burger and fries were ok (not awesome), but M complained about them the whole freakin' time. I think that there are definitely better places to get burgers. The space had lots of chairs and tables. I won't comment on the cleanliness because they were cleaning while we were there. In fact, the guy sweeping the floor had to step out of our way so we could leave.

This is a fun place to take the kids. They love the free peanuts and the staff are very friendly. Definitely a thumbs up!

Greasy burger and fries awesomeness. They need to work on Ventilation here. You walk out smelling like fresh fried fries. Very good burgers!

Yum! No more rumble in my tummy. Very nice staff. I guess you get free peanuts while you wait? Idk The food was great, I had a double with everything, which seemed like all the veggies in the fridge plus, bacon. I was like homer Simpson eating his donuts by the last bite.

I'm still not seeing the hype with Five Guys. It's not bad or anything, but I basically look at it as Wendy's plus five bucks. The free peanuts are nice, but I'm not taking time to shell peanuts after more than three drinks. They do have good hours--i.e., they're open late, but this isn't as big a factor as it would have been a decade ago. There are plenty of late night burrito spots, for example, that seemingly don't ever close. They get a nod for good fries, which come by the boatload, as well as a digital pop machine and good late hours. I think there are better options, though.

So I had the pleasure of going to a Five Guys while in Chicago. My good friend Kyle Duke challenged me to eating a double cheeseburger and a large fry with drink when we got here. Thinking this was some easy feat, I accepted. The burger, with all the trimmings, was phenomenal. Good burger, good toppings, fresh, hot. The works. Awesome. Fries, good. Not the best. Not the worst. The amount however, mind blowing. you get fries with more fries. The large fry could probably feed a family of four. Overall, good experience. 4 stars.

  • Abhay S.

Another great experience at Five Guys. For our next trip, we're going to have to get the small fries because the large is just too much. The burgers were great and perfectly made. It's a good thing I don't come here often.

I guess my review can easily be summed up with one phrase: "What is all the fuss about?" I can't tell you the answer to that. The burger was just OK and the fries were good. I do have to say though that I am used to getting some fries with my burger... not a burger to the side of my massive amount of fries. Come on, they were good but I didn't need that many of them. The customer service was a bit lacking. "What do you want?" is just a bit more aggressive than "Can I help you?" or "What can I get for you?" But hey, maybe I expect too much nowadays... And what fast-food-esque burger place doesn't have a combo menu? A "LITTLE burger" with fries and a drink cost me 10 dollars because everything was listed separately on the menu. I'm on a serious budget right now if you know what I mean and I was under the impression it was going to be much less expensive based off of all the other reviews and gossip surrounding this place. So naturally, for the price I was expecting something astounding. It was just OK, hence the three stars. Seriously, I should be giving it a 2. I don't know how to be any more straightforward than that. It was my first experience and it won't be my last; however, I won't be back for a while. There are plenty of better burger joints out there. PS. I did enjoy the fact they have the new coke machines though; but I've used them before and the novelty isn't enough to earn that extra star. Hah.

You guys, I'm really sad to write this. It has nothing to do with quality of food or atmosphere. Both I think are totally exceptional and cool. I went there yesterday with my good friend for a burger. Not that this is any of anyone's business, but my friend and I recently have been working out and have lost about 25 lbs each. She orders first with Sylvester J., a burger for herself and one to go for her husband. Then I order. As we go to get our drinks; my friend hears the line cook ask Sylvester how many patties. Sylvester tells him and then says, fat fat fat. My friend is looking at Sylvester as he's saying this loudly and they make eye contact. Sylvester then rudely says, "HELLO?!". She was taken aback, so she didn't say anything, but came over to the table where I'm waiting. She's visibly upset and she tells me what happened. The 4 dudes behind the counter (no gentlemen here, folks) proceed to keep staring at us; Sylvester being the worst and making very embarrassing eye contact, like the judgmental person he is. It was, all in all, a horrible experience. My friend and I are both in the food industry (she's an exec chef and I am a senior sales manager for private events) and can not believe that this happened. What happened to empathy? 5 guys, you are bigger and better than that. It's not even like my friend and I are so fat and ugly. In fact, we both are quite attractive and friendly (which I shouldn't have to justify) nor were we being rude and mean in any way -- not that, that would justify the comments. I've only been to this place 3 times in the past 2 years I've lived in the neighborhood. It's a great spot with a great burger. I will never be back, due to Sylvester alone. I'm sure my $7 burger won't put a dent in their pocket, but it's principle! Hopefully my friend won't let some jerk with no respect for women, bring her down.

After surviving the entire day on a model's diet (literally) of 10 grapes, 4 - 2" squares of sandwich, a half bottle of water, and lots of booze, I was famished come 1am. Popped onto the Yelp Android App to see what was open and Five Guys became our next destination. The place is pretty straightforward. No decor outside of the Five Guys posters everywhere and bags of the potatoes, which I feel is a clever way to have storage out amongst the customers. So, remember I'm famished, right? Forget just a hamburger, give me cheese and bacon! Why this place rocks: All the free toppings you can get on your burger. Mayo, Relish, Onions, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mustard, Jalapeno Peppers, Green Peppers, A.1.® Steak Sauce, Bar-B-Q Sauce, Hot Sauce. First ten toppings = all the way. I got my bacon cheeseburger all the way and it was all the way GOOD. The freshness was resounding. They have Gold Peak tea for those that feel their burger is enough calories on it's own, 4 different choices, as well as the usual soft drinks. My companions told me the fries were great, and from the way they were scraping the bottom of the cup the fries come in, I'm apt to believe them. I'm not on this part of Clark Ave often, but I would make an effort to return here when desiring a fresh quick straightforward burger while in the area.

I have no idea what the fuss is about these burgers. Yes, they are hand formed- but I didn't really notice any other difference. Burger was okay, fries were okay. Nothing I can't get at a regular burger joint. And can I just say that they have lots of toppings but all normal- I.e mushrooms, onions, ketchup, etc. But they only have American cheese- really?!?! Anyways- def nothing to write home about. i have and can do better than this at home.

I have been to the location of Five Guys on Clark south of Fullerton once. The burger is very hefty (two beef patties), good but not great. Same goes for the regular size order of fries, which can be split between two persons (wonder how large the "large" is). My friend ordered a "little" burger (one beef patty) which is still a fair-sized item. The Five Guys decor is very evident (red and white color scheme, sacks of potatoes stacked about the premises, peanuts in the shell for your snacking enjoyment). The staff was very nice to us even though we had stayed passed the closing time.

Don't believe the hype. Hearing from many people who told me that this place has the best burger's in town. One night, I've decided to try it. I went in around 8 and it was not that busy. It was a pretty simple menu, order any burger with a variety of condiments. Of course, there is no combo meals, so every thing is separate. I've walked out of there with a cheese burger and fries, total cost without a drink around $10. The burger was just OK, nothing great and not worth the $7. The fries was ordinary, mushy and not even crispy. Sorry Five Guy's, I'm heading to Burger King.

  • Hoang L.

Originally, I was going to give only 3 stars, but just remembered how awesome the seasoned fries were. The burgers really good, but not amazing. Once you load up your burger, it's kinda pricey for a fast food, self serve restaurant. Tip: they give you a crap load of fries, so go with another person so you 2 can share.

Yummy Fries, friendly counter people- I had never been in before. They were very chatty, sweet and informative- of course it was early and there wasn't a line present to be annoyed by my list of toppings (all) or questions about the difference between Cajun fries and their house fries. The french fries deserve much praise, not the skinny wimpy fast food standard- these fries are hearty, wholesome, craveably crisp on the surface with chunky sea salt and a bit of earthy potato skin enhancing the natural, soft potato texture and flavor inside. You will be given an overflowing cup and with those first few bites you may wish for more fries (you piglet you!) but exercise a wee bit of restraint. Because unlike the shameful wimpy fast food standard fries, these are pretty hefty portioned and filling... Oh, those fries... they are overflowing, soaking the bulging brown paper bag to transparency with grease. You don't want to ruin your wardrobe taking these to-go! You want sit down, to shell peanuts, feed them to your handsome boyfriend and play with the soda fountain machine options in an attempt to find the tastiest beverage... which for me is the Cherry Vanilla Coke Zero. Yeah, diet soda with this meal? Don't think I don't appreciate the obvious conflicting caloric contrast. It was delicious. The burger is nothing to sneer at, I got a regular (massive) and had to share as my capacity was limited. With all the toppings, it is hard to hold, let alone eat- but messiness is a pleasure and I was perfectly willing to make a mess trying to get my junk food fix! My Boyfriend had caved and couldn't wait. He said the two pieces of pizza he ate prior (at another establishment) would hold him over. Hah. One order of fries and a regular bacon burger later he was sad they did not have milkshakes. A burger joint without milkshakes? Oh, the obscenity! Can you stand it? That startling lack of milkshake, was my only complaint. I'll be back for sure, wearing fat pants in preparation. Yum.

This is one of those places my European friends would have a bunch of questions I'd have a difficult time answering. European: Why are sacks of raw potatoes sitting in huge stacks all over the floor? Me: I don't know. Consider them an American version of wine barrels. European: But rats and cockroaches wouldn't want the wine that's in the barrels. Me. Yeah, well...I don't know. Perhaps they're just for show. (European looks at me, then smirks) European: They sell hamburgers and hot dogs. That's it??? Me: Yeah, looks that way. Oh, sodas. European: They should sell shakes. Me: You're right. For a sizable place, they could easily add shakes to the menu. European: Why are there boxes of peanuts everywhere? Me: I guess they're for you to scoop some for snacks while you wait for your food. European: The food takes THAT long to get after you order? Me: No, it's probably just for kitsch value. (European looks at bill) European: MON DIEU, they charged me $14 for a hamburger, fries and a Coke. Am I paying for the peanuts, too? Me: Um. No, um. I don't think so. My total for a hot dog, fries and Coke came to $12. Wow. This place is expensive. European: And weird. Even for America. Me: Even for Chicago.

There are several Five Guys near where I live so I've had it a few times. My SoCal friends tend to think Five Guys is some sort of cult favorite fast food restaurant similar to in-n-out or White Castle. I'm not so sure. At least I don't know any friends of mine who are crazy about Five Guys. The quality of the food is okay but it's still fast food and definitely unhealthy. I like their fries, but overall it's nothing impressive. They do have this really cool futuristic soda machine that's the most high-tech I've ever seen, and you get to play around with it. Price is pretty high for what it is, I'd say about twice the cost of McDonalds.

Dear Five guys- Why do you have to be just a hop, skip, and jump from my place of employment?? Your delicious little bacon cheeseburger "all the way" and your heavily seasoned cajun fries are going to be the death of me.....well at least the death of my waistline. I've tried your hotdogs too and they're just as dangerous....and delicious. Due to the massive amount of bag fries you give me, I don't even have room to eat the massive amounts of peanuts you have stashed around the place. One question-why do your employees have to yell and announce I've walked in the door? I don't really like attention drawn to the fact that I'm about to stuff my face with greasy, cheesy, bacony goodness. Maybe they could just quietly tell their coworkers to put a burger on the grill? XOXO L

The In-n-Out of the Midwest this is not (In-n-Out's burgers are WAAAY better) but for a good greasy hangover helper, the cheeseburger at 5 Guys is awesome. Yes, I think this is better than DMK. Some people may consider them not even in the same class. DMK does have some really tasty combinations but I think for the size of the burger and what you pay, I'll probably have 5 Guys every time. Of course one of the best parts of this place are the toppings galore that you can throw on your burger. The burgers are a great size, tasty and while I don't think they're quite as good as all the fanfare in the restaurant might promote, this is a solid option to satisfy your burger craving. I think the quality is somewhat better than the average place that would be dubbed "fast food" so don't let that tag fool you, these are great burgers.

When the nice boy I know returned from his too long trip away from me last week, we needed somewhere to get food, good food. I am a burger lover, so he suggested Five Guys. I had heard about it, but never had experienced it. Now, as I mentioned, I am a burger lover (and in my opinion, an expert) so I will not say that this is the best burger I have ever had, but it is definitely in my top 10. They really scored extra points when you could put all the items on the burgers that you want, for no extra charge. My toppings of choice...ketchup, mustard, pickles and relish. What more do you need? This burger was quite delicious. And it was huge, bonus points! Now, on to the fries. You get a gargantuan bag of fries, plenty to share. This is both quantity and quality folks. They have some of the best fries I've had in a long time. I wanted to eat more, but after the entire burger, I could not have as many fries as I truly desired. So, good food, decent prices, bags of potatoes and peanuts all around (not sure why I liked that part so much)...definitely a strong 4 star experience.

I loved this place. You had to wait a while for your food but I loved that because they actually make your burger and fries fresh. I hate places like McDonalds were you just finished ordering and they already give you your food. The peanuts they have are awesome so make sure you try them, The staff was very friendly here. I will come back for sure.

First timer eating at five guys. I got the veggie sandwich its veggies on a hamburger bun it was good but messy. You can have all the toppings u want. Kinda reminded me of subway but less toppings. My friend got the hamburger and fries said it was good. I like the free peanuts. I also love the digital soda machine so many good choices. They serve your food to you in a brown paper bag. They have a nice 50's atmosphere going on.

Love the peanuts! I had a cheeseburger with Cajun fries, and it was the artery clogging deliciousness I thought it would be. Between the two of us we had two cheeseburgers, a reg fry and 1 drink and it costed $18. A little pricey, but I assume one won't cone here often (heart attack!!!). The next time u come, I'll be sure to order the little burger as it's difficult for me to finish this review as I slip into a 5Guys burger induced comaaaaaa...... zzzzzzz...

Yep, cheap burgers with free grilled mushrooms and/or onions and a whopping amount of fries all at 1 am when you're hungry is exactly why I'm glad this place is finally opened! It's in a great location (for me), the staff is always super nice and patient, and I haven't seen a dirty table yet (the "busboy" wipes down the tables immediately)...yay for clean! Granted, I enjoy this place for my fast food burger cravings since after awhile pizza and burritos just don't do it for me anymore. Yay for the opening of Five Guys in Lincoln Park!

Great burgers and fries and very friendly, helpful and efficient severs. In fact the severs add a lot to the experience. Highly recommended for when you crave a hamburger or fries. (Haven't tried the hotdogs.)

If you are in a hamburger mood, but you don't want those huge pub burgers nor the price, this is the place to go. It's casual, quick service, and fun for the kids too. They play good music and the bathrooms are pretty clean (important when you have the little ones with you). The little burger is quite enough to get you full. So each of us (3) had one, one large order of fries, and one large soda (free refills so we shared). Bill came out to $20. Afterward, we walked and checked out the shops (it's nicely situated in Lincoln Park).

I think this chain has a good thing going for it. It's simple and if you want a good burger, this is the place to check out for something quick and tasty. I was first exposed to this chain in Florida since they've been around for awhile and I was delighted that one came in right up the street from my apartment in Lincoln Park. I always order a little cheeseburger and the toppings are also fresh and correct. I can't tell you how many fast food restaurants get my order wrong. The fries are good and they give you a lot of them. I don't much care for the cajun fries and now they have a very fancy soda machine that has about 400 different flavors of your favorite brand. They don't have milkshakes but I say who cares? They do fast burgers well and I've never met anyone who said they weren't tasty. Not the best burger in the city but worth your buck.

Not worth the hype at all!!! I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with everything and it was a disappointment. The patty and bacon strips were dry, not just over cooked, but dry. The mushrooms were barely cooked and the "Famous" fries were cold and flavorless. Over priced and disappointing. What a joke!

    (1)
  • Brenda H.

I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I first walked in. First of all, I thought the bags of potatoes were a bad sign--they ran out of room, were in the process of moving or severely overestimated their need of potatoes. I felt a bit rushed to order so I went with a cheeseburger with the regular toppings plus mushrooms (hey, it's free toppings! why not pile it on?). My husband ordered a large fry for us to share which was a BIG mistake. They gave us so many fries that it could feed a family of 4. I think a regular order would have been just fine, and we still would have had leftovers. And my husband also ordered large drinks for each.. another big mistake, it's free refills. We spent more on a larger cup for no reason, boo! So we could have saved a couple bucks by knowing what to expect, not a big deal I guess... but the cashier could have warned us!! Sigh.. The meat patties (yes, there are 2 in a regular burger.. I think the small version is just 1 patty) were juicy and tasty. The cheese was so-so, I took some out actually. And I didn't think the mushrooms were all that good, I took them out completely. I think the perfect choices (for my next visit) would be: the smaller cheeseburger selection with lettuce, tomato, and pickles with a regular order of fries (to share) and the smallest cup possible for soda. Random thing: plenty of peanuts to enjoy for free... I saw other people take full advantage but I didn't think I could enjoy my burger after eating peanuts. And I was too full to try after my meal! It's a good deal for a filling meal, so a 4 it is.

Took my nephews to dinner last night and we made pigs out of ourselves. Now I don't eat American cheese but it's the only cheese in the house at 5 guys. And really, who eats a burger without cheese? Freakinfantasticlicous!! A for real live in person hand shaped, 100% beef burger, thin, old school burger with grilled onions, mustard, tomatoes and lettuce? A hot crispy bag( yes we ordered a damn bagful of fries!) with cajun seasoning. mmmmmmm mmmmm 5 guys if nothing else you guys know fries!! Oh and all the free peanuts you can eat..if you like that sort of thing.

    (5)
  • Kel W.

Nay to the Cajun fries! Not a fan, not a fan. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the basic American cheese they put on their burgers - maybe offer more cheese options? Other than that - OH MY MY! I love 5 Guys. For "fast" food, it doesn't get much better. I love that I can change my burger order each time I am there (the sides) and it doesn't cost me any more or less - the same amount each time. I have been to this location quite a few times and the workers are always friendly, fast and the food is almost always delicious. I have a secret love affair with their french fries too .... shhhh .... Go pack your face with a burger!

So they say they're closed at 2:00 am... but don't let that fool you. They're opened until you're sober up! We walked into their door at 1:58am and turned around, but a girl who was sitting right at the entrance (but didn't work there) told us just to come in anyway, so we did and we weren't alone. There were many other groups of people walking in after us. Cheap burgers and fast services. I struggled really hard to say "no" to that burger. It was 2:00am, and I had 2 dinners that night, I wasn't about to have the third. But of course, I could not pass up on some fries that were offered to share. The place was very clean inside. The big fries were HUGE! The 3 of us shared it, and 2 of us weren't eating burgers, and it was more than enough. Good stuff. My friend who was inhaling his burger told me I miss out, I believed him. That thing looked greasily delicious! And looking at him making it disappear so fast, I have not a slightest doubt in my mind. We left a little bit after 2:30 and the place was still opened with people inside and standing near the entrance. I love how late they're opened, and next time I'm back, I'll for sure try the burgers. For now, they have a solid 4 in my book!

So it's plastered all over the windows, the walls, and even the fountain drink cups, how great their burgers are, so I don't need to rant and rave cause it's true. They are delicious. I'm here to tell you this: 1.) Their price is great for the portions. 2.) You get a truckload of fries, so always order the regular. I promise it'll be more than enough---even if you're sharing. 3.) They have yet to screw up my order. Other fast food places should take a lesson from these guys. You want no mushrooms, no pickles on your cheeseburger, that's exactly what you get. 4.) They are quick and very friendly. I get a smile from everyone, every time. 5.) They have a touch screen fountain drink machine! Who'da thunk it?! There's even an Orange flavored Coke as an option. 6.) Peanuts! Get your peanuts!!! They have peanuts for you to eat and throw the shells on the floor. 7.) They're open late and have on line ordering. They take all cards. 8.) They're just plain great!!!

Its nice to have an alternative to McDonald's around the neighborhood. I liked the free peanuts that they have, it's a nice touch to the restaurant. However, this place has got nothing on In-N-Out Burger. I thought the flavor was lacking, but that's just my personal preference. The fries are fresh but the plain fries are truly plain. The staff is nice and the restaurant is clean, but I just wish the food was better.

The service here is hilarious. Neither of the people behind the counter seemed to know what was going on. They let another group take my friends' orders, then freaked out when they found out. They also screwed up my burger and gave me a new one without even checking -- I could've made it up for all they knew. The bacon cheeseburger was good, but I don't know if it was the best fast food burger I've ever had. I'd say In-N-Out is better, only because it tastes and looks fresher and more put together. I do like how they have more toppings available and we can choose what we want on it. The bun, however, could use some work -- it was just a regular store-bought burger bun. The Cajun fries were great. Nice flavour to them. I'm glad I went, but I don't think I'm going to jump on the Five Guys bandwagon anytime soon.

Cajun fries are addicting! Order a small, because it'll fill up 2 people just fine! The hamburgers are okay. You can special order what you want. Would go back any day for those Cajun fries.

We met several several years ago on a hot FL day. It was so good. I remember wishing they were here in Chicago. Now they are. The burgers are huge! The fries are delicious, but don't order a large, it feeds two. You can get the burger pretty much anyway you want it. The music is very loud. I would just let you know if you have a peanut allergy to avoid here. They cook the fries in peanut oil and they have boxes of peanuts available for appetizers.

Ok, this was a fantastic burger! So tasty and very satisfying. Staff was very nice, they had originally wrong the order and when I told them, I did not have to wait long to get the perfect one,..no fuss no trouble! Loved the peanuts and the Coke machine is awesome!

Soooo tasty. The price seems a little high, until you get your food, and you realize how much you're getting. It's considerable. I love many different styles of burgers, but flat-top griddle-seared burgers have a special place in my heart, and that's just what these are. They're greasy, juicy, little patties, heaped with fresh toppings and a buttery bun. The fries are a little inconsistent, but only in that sometimes they're perfect and some days they are just extremely good. haha! What I'm saying is...they're always great, but some days better than others. and it makes sense, considering they come from a different place everyday, the origins they proudly display on a white board. I think that's pretty cool. The cajun variety is really tasty, but every once in awhile they over season, and that is not good. Plus, sweetest coke machine ever. 5 stars. ................ Review over. Rant begin. I think the negative reviews thus far have been hilarious. 1. In-n-out burger. WTF is in-n-out burger. I'm not actually asking, I'm saying, there isn't one for 500 miles. Why are you talking about it. If you're saying, "try this other place instead," sure, I understand that. But if you're referring to something that can't be found in the state, I don't think the comparison is relevant. go review in-n-out burger. 2. "Long and behold" is not an expression. lol. lo and behold. Lo. It's an archaic expression for like, "Look." as in Look, and after having looked, subsequently behold. Wtf would long and behold mean. 3. I lol'ed at the post, "The fries were good. But it's not five guys fries. It's about the burgers." Interesting that you would say that, as I think the big red sign says "five guys burgers and fries." As in, it is equally about burgers and fries. If you said, "Hot dogs were good. But it's not five guys hot dogs, burgers and fries. It's about the burgers and fries." I would have been like, "touche lad." But no. You missed 40 percent of a 5 word title, and you put it in your review. 4. The signs. It's not "self-praise." I'm not sure if you can even call it "bragging." It's not humble, or even necessarily novel, but they're posting reviews of themselves. It can be difficult to discern, but I usually look to the quotation marks and citation for cues that it's a quote. It's like elvis hanging his golden records on the wall. They're saying, "Look at our accomplishments, evidenced by these numerous favorable reviews." Whereas anybody can say, "Best burger in town," not everybody can say, "notable critic of the blah blah newspaper said we were the best burger in town." It's different.

For all you East Coasters out there, comparing 5 guys to In-N-Out is like comparing Carrie Prejean to Monica Lewinsky. Both have been involved in public sex scandals and both are unquestionably not good for you, but there is absolutely no question who is tastier. 5 guys burgers are good but nothing to write home about. More like a suped up Wendy's burger than anything close to on par with the heavenly goodness that is In-N-Out Animal style. The best thing about 5 guys by far is the cajun fries. Copious, hand cut with the skin on and delicious. Get a small because the regular is plenty for two. So yah 5 guys is perfect if you want something a little better than Mickey Ds but don't want to sit and wait. But otherwise, go for something a little more unique.

What a fantastic place. The burgers are made fresh and they are good and juicy. Had the cajun fries and they hit the spot with me. Are the prices high? Maybe a bit for burgers. Also, free peanuts for you too....as many as you want to consume. Jsut serve yourself. The young lady that waited on me was absolutely fantastic. Her name was Rachel...or at least that's what she told me....lol. She was patient....even when I asked if they had tacos....lol. She kind of walked me thru what to order and explained everything in great detail. She must be a long time worker there as she sure know her stuff. Will be back again and again.

Apparently we didn't have any of these in Houston before I left. I had no idea this place was a chain. And quite a large one at that! One tasty burger I think - though I'm hesitant to get burgers that I can't choose the done-ness of it. Usually screams "frozen!". I like that you can add as many toppings as you like though. Except you only can have American cheese? Gross! Though I love that they melt it into the burger. And I'm Texas girl that loves her some spice so we got the Cajun fries. Yeesh! Too much! Tasted like a whole jar for Tony Chachere's was dumped on them. All-in-all it was decent enough - I can say I tried it. Would I make a special trip back? Probably not unless I needed some hangover helper grease and was in the neighborhood!

They have good burgers and fries. The reviews are over hyped. If you like peanuts, they're complimentary and self served. The burgers are a little pricey. I don't have problem spending money at all but I'm just stating the obvious. *If you're ever in San Diego, try O'Brothers Burger

Boo! I always turn to yelp and my fellow chicagoans to show me the way, and I shocked that this place hasn't gotten more bad reviews. There is one opening up across the street from my gym and I couldn't wait so I checked out this one near my alma, Depaul. Blech! A $6 cheeseburger....grainy crumbly overcooked meat-Eww! Waaaay worse than McD's...and might I add I had just worked out and was s-t-a-r-v-i-n-g, which makes it really hard to disappoint me. Not to mention that I waited over ten minutes for this burger. No way!!

As any self-respecting vegetarian will tell you, it's okay to eat meat, but only in secret where no one will know. Well, I'm outing myself. I admit it. About once a year or so, I get a craving only 5 Guys can scratch, and I go to town on a cheeseburger. I make love to it with my mouth in a way that can only be described as pornographic. There is moaning. There is juice. There is ultimate satisfaction. And then, as with any good under-the-table hookup, there is resulting shame and self-loathing. And then usually a round two with the French fries. Judge away. But maybe wipe the drool off your chin first.

I had never been to a Five Guys before, but as we say at home, "the burger lash" (go look it up if you don't know what I mean). I somehow had the idea in my head that they had GINORMOUS burgers, but I was wrong. It really wasn't that big, but the toppings more than made up for it. I got the regular burger with jalapenos and bbq sauce. Talk about HEAT! Soooooo good! The cajun fries were also pretty good, but I thought that 'Cajun' would have meant a little more than some seasoned salt on fries. Nevertheless, it was GOOOD! And......thank you for that amazing thing you do with the fries! Fries on top of fries! Love it! I'll be back!

Long & behold, I finally worked up the courage to enter Five Guys. Having heard the legend of their heart-attack worthy burgers, mountain of cajun fries, and unlimited supply of pop you can consume.... I've decided 4days of workout @ the gym justifies for its cheeseburger. Firstly, I was grateful for the lack of queuing out the door. After all, there was a 45min to 1 hr wait for this join when it first opened! I've held out long enough that on a Sat afternoon (~4pm), there were only a handful of people + 2 person ahead of me in line. At the counter, I was confronted with a dilemma - should I go all-in or chicken out with just a couple of toppings? I decided to skim on the sauces (A1 + honey mustard + ketchup? ew!) and only got the A1 sauce, with all of the other trimmings =D Brought my sisters in for support and we each got a burger! It worked out to around $26 for 3 people, which is a bit pricy but I figured the burger will more than make-up for it. After a short 15min wait, we got our burgers. They were juicy, pumped out between the 2 buns with double-patties and all of our toppings! The fries were frighteningly HUGE - you know how you get a small / big cup for the fries? Well, if you order their "large" fries, you will get 2 large + 2 small cups worth of fries... I am not kidding you! We were honestly buried in a mountain of fries....! The burgers were a-ok, not particularly juicy and the toppings just average. For the price & heart-attack value though, I think Burger King actually fill my cravings more! The cajun fries were amazing though. I am glad I did it, but Five Guys just don't live up to the hype and the thousands of self-boasting articles (the bathroom is seriously decked out....)

Really? All these five star reviews, unbelievable. Someone told my husband they have just the bestest burgers in the world and we must try them, so my husband told me, he heard they're the bestest burgers in the world. So we tried them, alas they aren't. No matter, they're good and I'll probably return if I'm hungry and they're there, however a special trip, no. It's a good burger and fries, wish I could say something descriptive here but it's what you'd expect. Not that that's a bad thing. I did think the shake was above average, in case you're looking for the whole belt busting package.

Surely not the absolute best burger in the world or that I've ever had, but still high on my list. Juicy, fresh burgers and lots of toppings to choose from (that won't cost you extra). Even their hot dogs are really good--love that they're split and cooked on the grill. The Cajun fries are a nice touch even though I prefer my fries crispier and skinnier. If you do like them, though, you're in for a treat as they like to shovel extras into your bag if you ordered fries. Stopped in again last night and was greatly amused by their new digital Coke machines that were just installed a couple days ago. Why settle for the measly 8 choices everywhere else when you can now have like 106 options (no joke). Always delicious and satisfying, they've made me a fan!

  • Mike S.

The burgers are delicious, and built to order, so you can make it as unhealthy as you want. The fries are frankly, really average to forgettable. The real thing to write home about is the Coke machine. Holy God. I think it's from the future. It might be smarter than I am. It literally has a computer in it, enabling you to pick like 50 different kinds of pop. Holy hell. I'll come back just to play with it.

So I just moved to the neighborhood and, after seeing the great, big red FIVE GUYS BURGERS AND FRIES signs around the city, I decided since my boyfriend was visiting from Germany and wanted to try "American fast food," we thought, "why not?" and in we went. The place has kind of a cute, clean, diner decor. The lines are fast and the food's pretty cheap. Also a plus: the free peanuts. You get a little paper bowl thingie, scoop your peanuts and off you go to wait and munch at your table while you wait for the burgers. We waited about 5 minutes - not too bad. As for the food itself? The fries are pretty darned good. And they give you so many of them - oof! My boyfriend (he's not a light eater) and I shared the smaller order of fries and they were PLENTY for the two of us. On to the burgers... meh. They're okay. Not great, not terrible. Just okay. The good news is, your toppings - and they give you LOTS of options - are all free. The not so great? The burgers are pretty flavorless. All in all, I'd say our $14 was well spent. I didn't feel like we got a great deal nor did I feel as though we were robbed. I'll be back when I'm too lazy to go all the way out to Kuma's.

I am a burger wimp as I am vegetarian, but let me tell you: This place makes superb veggie burgers. You can chose your condiments, if you know what you are doing that is. Hello peanuts...

Delicious cheeseburgers and some of the best fries I've ever had. It's a no frills burger place that's a little more expensive than the competition however the price disparity is justified since I have yet to ever be disappointed. Having recently consumed the vaunted In N' Out I can't even fathom how they could be considered competition in the fine, yet underappreciated, art of the cheeseburger. Tip: unless there are 3+ of you the "small" order of fries is sufficient, also pass on the Cajun fries

I was delighted to find out that the day's potatoes were from Sugar City, Idaho. I put a note in my calendar to drive there and thank the potato growers. The fries at Five Guys are greasy and delicious and abundant. They fill up that little bag so much that it spills into the paper bag. I couldn't even finish them. The burger, however, left something to be desired. I ordered a Little Bacon Cheeseburger. It was almost five bucks and the patty was so small I could barely taste it. The saving grace was that the condiments were free and you can stack them up as much as you want. Theoretically you can pile it all on until your burger reaches for the heavens like the Tower of Babel and it will still be less than $5. I piled on the lettuce, tomato, pickle and barbecue sauce, but the taste of the burger wasn't really that much better than Wendy's. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, just not that special. The atmosphere was simple, red and white tile, potato bags that I was tempted stand on and run along the stack. The food was quick and I ate it accompanied by loud oldies music, reading all the newspaper articles framed along the walls and the bulletin board covered in crayon drawings created by little kids proclaiming that Five Guys is better than McDonalds, which is true. I might have to get a regular sized burger next time. My frugality might be what contributed to my mediocre impression.

Honestly I don't really see what the whole big deal about this place is. It's nothing special. I tried the little cheeseburger with lettuce, pickle, grilled onions and mushrooms and bbq sauce. That's usually what I get on burgers.. don't judge me. The patty was very thin. It kind of reminded me of how I remember McDonald's tasting (although I haven't had a McDonald's burger in about 3 years)... I'm probably wrong but yeah out of all the burgers I ever tried (even though that's not many) THAT one popped into my head. Weird? Whatever. My tummy hurt afterwards too. The cajur fries were really good though, I stole a couple from my friend. They didn't taste too grease although they might have been a bit too salty for my taste. But overall, tasted pretty homey to me. So that's a plus. Overall. It's an OK place, I suppose, but I wasn't impressed. And I have no idea where people are getting these free peanuts from, I didn't get any!

Just as I'd heard, this place is overrated. Didn't have a burger, but shared a hot dog and fries with my fiance for dinner. The hot dog was decent and the closest I've had to a Rochester Hot (my favorite hot dog only available in NY), but it was nothing spectacular. When we walked by, we saw all these signs raving about their fries with a few random magazines voting them having the #1 fries in the country. Craziness. They were gross and even slightly soggy. Maybe it was just a one time thing, but man I wouldn't order it again. This place is definitely a heart attack waiting to happen. Soooo greasy and just not worth it.

I tried Five Guys this evening and was not impressed. I did not go in with any expectations. I thought the burger was above par and the hand cut fries were decent. Decent... What really put me off was $10.58 (with tax) for a burger, reg. fries and a reg coke. I would have been happy to pay this had I received a $10.58 (with tax) experience. First, there are no plastic trays to take the food to your table. The guy looked at me funny when I asked. Everyone's burger gets thrown into a brown bag and the fries are thrown in on top. I made an improv eating surface with by tearing my bag open and making a table cloth. The fries eventually soaked through the bag. Those fries touched the dirty table surface, so I did not eat them... The table tops and floors looked like they had been cleaned last week not after the lunch hour. The hamburger was wrapped in tin foil. Just crappy tin foil. Seriously, why would Five Guys waste an opportunity for marketing themselves? Most other surfaces had some form of advertising how Five Guys was so great. The cup had quotes from different media sources with reviews, there were big display boards with food critics from all over hanging in the restaurant. I mean it was really overkill. If you're really that great, you don't need to do this. Word of mouth and repeat business will make your boat payment and keep your 42 foot yacht gased up and ready for all five of the guys... I'm sure some folks will think my gripes are pretty small, but $10.58 (with tax) is a lot to pay for a fast food meal. If this was $6.99 I would be running through the streets with a Five Guys banner. The bottom line is that there are plenty of places to get a better burger for less in the city.

My BF and I went there the first time on a Wednesday night- since I came hungry, I was relieved to see no one was in line! There really are only 5 guys behind the counter. The service is pretty darn fast, drinks are free refills, peanuts to snack on while you wait, price keeps my wallet fat, the burger was great- I learned you get 2 patties, not just one! =) It was cooked right, not dry at all. I noticed the ketchup was on the bottom bun, one of my fave things about In-N-Out burgers. Nothing slips around when you bite into it- for someone who lvoes food as much as I do, it's simple details like this that make eating my food that much mroe enjoyable! The fries are nothing special. But I did love that it was just wrapped in foil, simple darn good food. I am a huge fan of mastering the basics!

Thanks to my mom, I'm a burger and fries kinda gal. I mean, come on, who doesn't appreciate a great burger!? After hearing all about the hype of 5 Guys, I decided to check it out for myself. I came here on a Wednesday night, about 6ish, and there was really no wait. Order the junior cheeseburger, with a order of fries. Got my number, got my coke (cause, let's face it, burger+fries=have to get a coke!), and waited for my number to be called. Cheeseburger was good, and the fries were enough to feed an army!! wow!! Why the 3-star review, I think it's just a little too pricey. Although, it is worth it being everything is made fresh, from fresh ingredients. I'll be back, just not on a regular basis. PS--IF YOU HAVE A PEANUT ALLERGY, DO NOT GO HERE! Fries are cooked in peanut oil, and people are eating peanuts throughout the restaurant. Shells are all over....just a friendly warning!

3 stars for the reason it deserved 5, the food. The first time i went here it was Ok, not the best but not to bad, drinks were really expensive and they give you lots of fries. But after i went again, it become like a drug, i craved it, its delicious and yet very repulsive at the same time. So for that it gets 3 stars The drinks here are way over priced, but if you eat in you will want a drink, these burgers require some liquid. Fries are a great deal, one order will feed at least 2 people, so keep that in mind when you order! Also their 'burgers' are actually double burgers and their little are singles. The topping for the burgers are great, and free!! I suggest getting all the way, all the toppings, it is the best combo, but very messy. Also try their grilled cheese, its not half bad

Ok, this is my third burger-related review in a row. My hobbies as of late have been grad school and cheeseburgers. Not a bad life. This was a fantastic burger. Not a super classy gourmet burger but like a greasy classic burger. And the fries. The giant bag o' fries. I think it's just the tiniest bit pricey for what it is, but ohhh so good. The burgers are HUGE. I always get the little burger which I still can't always finish. And there's one rule to abide when eating a FGB: DON'T PUT IT DOWN. Just keep eating. Push through. Fries later. I always get mine all the way so it's just lousy with awesomeness but disintegrates quickly. So two rules, don't put it down and get lots of napkins. These are popping up everywhere, which I love and hate. I'm just hoping one pops into West Michigan soon...

After a crazy night at a friends wedding, we were all in a very low place that could only be remedied by a burger and fries. I've really been wanting to try this place for a while now, as I grew up with the amazing in n out all around me. I liked the fact that signs told me where the potatoes were coming from. Very nice to see them jumping on that bandwagon. I got a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions, mayo, and ketchup. I didn't realize it would be a double patty burger, but man! It was so good! All the toppings are free, which is also cool. I wish there was an avocado option, that would make it divine. The fries, however, were a totally different story. Yuck. Too thick, too salty, too many! Next time I'll do without. I still prefer in n out, as its really just the perfect packaged deal with consistent simple good burgers, crispy fries, and excellent service. I would like a burger from here again, but I won't go out of my way for it

Cheap, greasy, and GOOOOOOD. My favorite part- the toppings are all FREE (minus cheese). The regular sized fries are enough to split AND they have Sprite Zero (most restaurants with fountain drinks don't carry that). A cheeseburger, fries and a drink cost me $11.24, but it was worth every penny. Now, if you will excuse me, I'm about to go pass out into a Five Guys induced food coma.

Burgers are decent, probably a bit more expensive than they used to be, great reviews all over the walls, a bucket full of crayons to draw with and peanuts to eat while you wait. Hrm. I picture this is what McDonald's was like just before it got famous.

Let the battle continue....IN N Out vs Five Guys. Five Guys is not a bad burger....the sauteed mushrooms are awesome and you get two patties.....but if you're making comparisons....no doubt its In N Out...its no contest, it just tastes better....you can tell by its popularity.....the lines at In N Out are consistently longer for good reason....Five Guys had to put peanuts in the line to keep the customers coming back =p....and the fries...don't know why people like them so much....its 80%paprika and salt and 20% fries.....and the price is astronomical I'm starting to believe there's crack in the INO burgers, its so addicting. If Five Guys bought some crack from the Cabrini-Green and put it in their burger, maybe it would be more popular....until then.....In N Out son!!!!!!! Overall: two stars.....just like the wording says...two stars "Meh. I've experienced better" Go down the street to EPIC burger =p

I am seriously happy that this is my 200th Yelp review. While here, I sent out a tweet that said "Five Guys is like the rest of the country's In N Out, but way better. Suck it, California!" It stirred up some controversy in my twitterverse, then In N Out ended up finding my tweet and writing back "I know you guys make due with what you have in other parts of the country. Don't hate." But that's the thing, I grew up with In N Out, and Five Guys really is SOOO much better. First off, hands down, the french fries are AMAZING at Five Guys. At In N Out, they taste like cardboard. Secondly, it's free to add mushrooms, bell peppers, jalepeno peppers and a whole mess of other things. I love toppings. And finally, most importantly, its not in California. And if I don't have to go to California to get it, it already gets extra stars. (Also, there's no creepy Christian propaganda shit going on on the bottom of the cups. Kudos on that.)

As I sit at my desk, ruminating over my recent dining experience at Five Guys, I find myself asking myself: So, was it worth it? And I, with the slightest hesitation, say yes. In this 13 degree weather was it worth it? Probably not, but under better conditions I would recommend it for a lunchtime jaunt. The burger was quite good. I got the "little cheeseburger" and it was more than big enough. Toppings are free and you can get things like grilled onions, mushrooms, barbecue sauce, which is neat. I worry that I am selling their burger short, because I have a bit of a burger bias. I can say, with total authority, that I have eaten the three best burgers in the country, so nothing else measures up, which is unfair to the many serviceable burgers in the country. The fries were overwhelming. I ordered a regular (the smallest they had), and I felt guilty for having to dispose of the excess fries, since there were so many. You could probably feed an entire orphanage on a regular order of fries. The meal would have been better with either a shake or a beer. On a scale of John Gosselin to Jon Hamm, I would give Five Guys a John Stamos. I definitely recognize his good qualities and consider him a cut above the rest, but given my choice I would prefer the Jon Hamm(burger). Ba-dum-ching.

Being the burger fanatic that I am.. I had to try this place out. First time I was pretty impressed. Fries reminded me of a less greasy "Jimmy's red hot fries on grand and pulaski". Fresh cut, cooked perfectly and they give you a TON! Cheeseburger was wonderful. Go there again last night. Ordered my usual. Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, fresh onion, pickle, mayo and mustard. I LOVE my burgers this way and truly love to chomp down on a burger where the meat is nice and juicy and warm and the veggies are crispy and cold. To me... this is the greatest thing!! For some reason I appreciated my visit there this time a little more than the first time. Maybe because I realized there were peanuts and I was more hungry and actually anticipated my meal during the trip there. (the first time it was just on a whim and was overwhelmed by how cold it was outside and even the drafts coming inside) One star off because everything is a la carte and although they give you a ton of fries...I believe its a tad overpriced as well as their drinks. Even the little cheeseburger is a bit to pricey for me. Their regular burgers however...worth every cent!! LOVE it!!

  • Aaron B.

Their hype is in their marketing not their food. They don't fool me with their out of town reviews. The food here is overpriced (oscar the grouch) and we all know where he lived. They use a Wendy's type burger patty and place it on a regular bun. If you're gonna charge that much for a burger come on add some flavor and originality. Far from ever being a Kuma's or lockdown burger.

    (2)
  • Monte H.

Overpriced, overhyped (by themselves?!?) and just plain over. Their burgers are thin and dry to say the least. They try to redeem themselves by giving you enough toppings to cover the flavorless burger. Comes with a bucket of soggy and overspiced fries but who's fooling who? You're better off going to Burger King.

After a night of over indulging on the cocktails, I decided to wander down the street for some greasy grub to cure the slight hangover blues. As soon as I walked in I felt like I was in some choreographed commercial. The counter guy was super pleasant, explained the menu to me, warned me about how huge the regular burgers are, etc., he had this spiel down. One of the prep guys chimed in to tell me how excellent the Cajun fries are, so I had to get them, of course. I also had a cheeseburger with jalapenos for a little kick. The grub was decent. I dont eat very much red meat so I am no expert, but this hamburger was better than the average fast food joint's. I suppose I would go there again if I had a hankering. The service was really the stand out for me, not the food.

I always enjoy a good five guys burger. their regular is a double burger and their minis are single patties, but go for the double.. the meat is good here. it's a bit greasier than In N Out but it's still a good place for a quick burger that will always hit the spot! oh yeah they also give you free peanuts to eat while you wait for your cooked to order burger, and the fries are from fresh cut idaho potatoes. check it out if you like burgers.

I waited and waited for this location to open - I walk by it nearly every day, and I sort of stalked it, because I was so excited something new and yummy was coming to my 'hood. Then, finally, it opened. Angels sang. I walked over. And.... Is it wrong that I just didn't love it as much as the Clybourn location? Methinks they are just still working the kinks out. The burger (by god, go for a little burger - it is plenty) was just meh - it wasn't as flavorful as I remembered. Plus they use iceberg lettuce - did I just not notice that before? The fries are also meh and come in hefty portions - definitely split these. I ordered a regular (the smallest size), and as usual they filled the cup and then kept on filling the bag. Let's just say I didn't touch the fries in the cup and there were still plenty left in the bag. Yeah, that's a lot of fries. Service was outstanding - the cashiers were patient with people in line who were new to the concept and kept smiling. Food was ready fairly quickly, and as I waited a sweet older guy wiping down tables came over to wipe down a table I was leaning on. He smiled at me and said, "we like people to be mesmerized when they sit down to eat!" He made me smile. :) The dining room is pretty big, but the place is busy - they do take call/fax orders and have a special spot to pick those up, so try that if you're pressed for time. They are open late on the weekends, so all the drunktards have somewhere to go to soak up the booze.... so that's a plus. Still expensive as hell, and just like the other location the music needs to come down a couple notches. (Wow, I felt 80 typing that sentence.) I'm thinking I'll wait a while before I come back to give them time to work the kinks out, but I know I can't stay away for long...

I first heard about 5 Guys when somebody at my work asked me if I heard what "Johnny" did this weekend.... Well I strolled upon it while shopping and decided I needed to do 5 Guys also. The first thing I noticed was that they must really be into peanut oil. Then I ordered a plain burger with fries and a drink. I read some comments saying $8 is too much. I don't know where they eat, but for a burrito (without avocado) and a drink at Chipotle or a Jimmy John's meal and it is the same price. You also pay $8 for a burger at a family restaurant and sometimes I prefer those burger or a homemade bbq's burger than any fastfood/bar burger. It was pretty good. Fries were so-so. Nothing to wow me though. The same goes for In 'n Out. I would rather have eaten at Culver's than most burger places or Busy Burger on Taylor. Plus at Culver's you can get the best soft serve around for dessert. :) But for real, the best burgers are filet mignon burgers, specifically at Luxbar. I was gonna give a 4 but then realized I have never gone back or craved it. Then again I don't live near 5 Guys.

Can I really write a review solely based on their fries? Only if their fries are the best I've had to date. They have the perfect mix between crunchy and limpness (haha you laughed, admit it). These are not your clean looking Mcdonald's fries. These are your thick-skin-on-Momma has-been-chopping-them-by-hand-all-day fries. Finally, go Cajun or go home. Furthermore, there are only two places I'd drive to in the city solely based on their fries: Susie's and Five Guys. Will update my review once I've tried their burgers. p.s. I am utterly intrigued by Hot Doug's Duck Fat Fries but as of right now Five Guys is king!

Visited yesterday and will most definitely be returning. Although their burger options don't beat Hamburger Mary's, they're still the best in the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area. The clincher for me is that the place isn't pretentious in the least, plus service is very fast while the food quality is excellent. Be aware if ordering for the first time that if you get what they call a 'hamburger', it's actually going to come out with two patties and be around 5" thick, gooey, and (if specified) absolutely laden with extras like mushrooms, onion, tomato, lettuce and condiments for no extra charge (so take that, Counter Burger!). You can order the smaller version (I think it's called a Jr. or a Little or something diminutive) that has one patty, which I'd really recommend if you're not absolutely starving to death. Also, the order of large fries is big enough for two people, and you get free refills - so no need to order a large drink if you're staying there to chow down. As far as price goes, between two people we spent $20 on 2 large drinks (with free refills), 2 (ridiculously large, and dressed all-the-way) double cheeseburgers, and a large order of fries, plus free peanuts while we waited for our order to come up. If we had ordered smaller drinks, regular cheeseburgers, and a small fry to share, it would have still been more than enough to eat and would have been right on par price-wise with every other grill in the area, except for the fact that in flavor and quality of ingredients, Five Guys has all of the local competition clearly beat.

So the menu only has like, 8 things on it. Four are "regular burgers" and four are "little burgers". The difference here is that "regular" burgers have TWO patties. And "little" burgers have one. I was not aware of this and was NOT prepared for the monstrosity that was handed to me. That said, it was a DAMN good burger. And OMG there are crayons and paper because nothing says awesome like coloring while eating a burger the size of your face. This place only gets three stars because a regular bacon cheeseburger and a drink was like, $10. And for $10, I could buy some Kraft singles, ground beef, and bacon. And! Be wary of the condiments you choose. Pick too many, and your burger will fall apart in your hands and then your entire arms will be covered in burger juice, mustard and relish.

I was kinda excited about this place opening up this past summer (since I live around the corner). Yet it took me till fall to try it out, and I've been there once more after that, and well, let's just say I'm willing to go to Moody's up in Edgewater for a better burger. First thing I discovered - if you don't specifically ask for a single burger, you'll get a double. Second, the bun tastes like something straight out of the supermarket day-old special rack. Third, the fries weren't all that great. Another reviewer mentioned the signs on the windows declaring how good their fries are - in other cities. Why aren't their fries just as good here? If I go to one of these other cities, will their windows say "best fries in chicago"? Skip this place - there are better burgers to be had elsewhere.

I feel like I must be the only person on the entire planet who had never heard of Five Guys before they popped up on the corner of Clark and Fullerton. And I feel like because of that, my review seems more negative than others, because I do not have a prior history with the chain. That being said, the food is mediocre at best. They have very large portions (and very large prices to match) of mediocre ingredients with a great topping list. The fries are the thick, soggy type. So if you like that, you're golden. If not, these are some of the worst soggy fries I have ever had, so save your $3. The burger were definitely better than the fries if surprisingly flavorless even with all the toppings. I like the free peanuts and I appreciate the effort they make to keep the peanuts inside the restaurant for safety's sake. I think it's probably a hopeless cause though. They have a very, very large staff at the moment, but it still takes 10 - 12 minutes to get your burger. I think that is pretty excessive, but maybe they're still training? Overall, it seems like the kind of place you love if you grew up on it, but if you didn't you just ask why there are so many damn signs lauding their food?!

I love when a casual dining establishment is just that... a casual dining establishment =) Supposedly they have the best burger under $5. I don't know about that, but maybe by when I come back next week I will. I had a Bacon burger when I came this past weekend. That was something like $5.59. I guess it does kind of blow that a burger, fries and a drink will end up costing about $10, but the peanuts are free, and when you order fries, they give you A LOT of fries. The staff is also pretty friendly! I've come a few times with a group of kids I work with. We get stipends for dinner on the weekends, and I like that this is a good possibility for dinner on our stipend. Even better, for reasons I won't talk about (nothing to do with the food which was excellent), our meal was complimentary when I went in this past weekend. They really went out of their way to accommodate us and I appreciated that when they couldn't accommodate one special need of ours, the employees called their manager to help, and he in turn gave us our meal for free. This restaurant is all it claims to be, so if you're expecting amazing, please step outside, do a double take of what you're about to walk into, and think again. It's no Kuma's, It's no DMK, It's no Counter, It's Five guys, and it beats fast food while still managing to give you good service and decent prices for the quantity of food. If my kids are a fan, then so am I.

Twelve dollars for a bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a drink. I mean, the food is okay, but twelve dollars? That's about the same price as a Kuma burger. A Five Guys burger is what the Kuma burger eats for breakfast. The food is average, but the pricing scheme is so out of whack I cannot comprehend paying for this again.

It was average... Found nothing special about the food... The add on menu was well above what most places offer... Parking... Ha! Must be for the area people because there is no parking

I finally made it to the famous Five Guys down the street from my apartment yesterday. It was a glorious 75 degrees in Chicago on a November day and my boyfran and I were just running errands in the LP. We stopped into Five Guys to feed our hunger pangs. I ordered a "little cheeseburger" (nothing little about it unless it was compared to the big guy that my partner in crime ordered). We shared an order of regular fries (the almighty man let us in on a little secret that the "large" would probably be too much for us and he was right. thanks, mr honesty). He also gave us cajun seasonings on the side and asked us to wait about 7 minutes and our food would be ready. We gleefully filled up a little basket with salty peanuts, sat down at a table to enjoy them and about 2 minutes later our number was called. Fantastically fast. He said 7 minutes, it was more like 3! I bit into my burger and was instantly pleased. Melt in my mouth goodness. Better than any burger I've had in the past few months. I hadn't had as good of a burger since my trip to Los Angeles months ago where we ate at gourmet burger joint, Umami. Five Guys even tops In N Out... easily. Cheap, delicious, quick and easy service-- I will certainly be back!

I feel like I'm finally a Chicagoan after visiting Five Guys in the wee hours of the morning. But I won't be back. While I've always been partial to Jack-in-the-Box (STL), I figure that a hamburger and fries isn't too hard to mess up, especially when I'm more than a few drinks in upon my arrival. The food was eh and within minutes I felt terrible. And continued to feel terrible. Then the next morning I felt even more terrible. And it wasn't the drinks. Still to this day when I wander by Five Guys, my stomach flip flops uneasily begging me not to go in. Don't worry tum-tum, I'm done.

Probably the best straight-up classic burger under $10 in I've had in Chicago. Juicy and tasty. Make sure you get everything on it as well.

This will be as short as the amount of time I spent in this establishment. 10.79 for a burger fries and a drink?!? Overrated. I saw nothing social about the food. A hot mess. It was difficult to eat the slop of meat and grease. I decided to abort half way. I wish the camera store that was the resided her before five guys was still there. Best burger?!? My George foreman produces a better product. It wasn't horrible, but for the price there are about 100 places I'd go first. Including bk and mcd. The fries were good. But it's not five guys fries. It's about the burgers. I don't get it

Delicious burgers!!!! I'm very picky and this place gets it just right. I love that you order completely from scratch and don't have to remember to tell them you don't want tomatoes or onions. I got a bacon cheeseburger, and I couldn't NOT eat the whole thing. It was soooooo good. My only complaint - other than the price, but, hey, it IS a trendy new restaurant - is that the fries kind of suck. I had to dump a bunch of salt on them. (Which really added to my cholesterol-filled delight.)

This was my first visit to Five Guys and I really enjoyed it. They definitely raised the bar when it comes to burgers and fries at a fast-food joint. Walking in the staff was very friendly and more than willing to explain the menu and their recommendations. I went with the cheeseburger with bacon, due to the recommendation of Daym Drops on youtube. While waiting for my food there were peanut available to eat by the scoop full, something I have never seen at a fast food restaurant before, and I will keep in mind next time I want a nice juicy cheeseburger (CAUTION IF ALLERGIC TO NUTS). When the burger arrived, it showed up in a plain brown paper bag, and along with the burger was a huge amount of fries. The burger was nice and thick, along with a large amount of cheese and thick slices of bacon. This was one delicious burger. The fries were nicely cut and thoroughly fried, to give them that nice crisp texture when biting into them. Even their soda machine was awesome, with the ability to put flavorings (vanilla, cherry, etc.) into your soda if you so choose to do so. I highly recommend this place and will return next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Love it. The fries at Five Guys are stoooopid. Are you kidding me? I CRUSHED that entire lil' brown bag of perfectly cut, fried and salted potatoes. Now I do love the burgers too. Fab fast food. A nice break from the Portillo's burger, and the delightful selection of toppings cost not a penny extra. I only do shelled peanuts at baseball games, so I can't rave about the free peanuts...but hey, who else does this? I prefer the staff at the Oak Park (Lake Street) location, FYI.

I am not a big burger person, however this was a GREAT burger. Juicy and tasty, cooked fresh when you order. I had heard the fries were very good, but I was not a fan. I didn't like the flavor, texture and they were just greasy for me. I know some people love the type of fries they serve here, so it's just my personal taste, I suppose. A few things to know before you go: 1.) The regular burger has 2 patties 2.) The regular fries are more than enough for 2 3.) The drinks are refillable.. fountain drinks To sum it up, I'd definitely go back and get a little burger.

Best piece of meat ive ever had in my mouth! Nothing better then having five guys inside me....sorry i had to say it. The food is great. The burgers are always made on the spot. A little expensive for a burger but its worth it. I highly recommend the bacon cheese burger with : Extra cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, bacon. Its very choice! Do It!

I reviewed the Clybourn Five Guys location in depth, but actually, I like this Clark and Fullerton location better! It's cleaner, not as busy, and the service is a little faster. The food? Oh all you need to know is that it's amazing. I mean the fries are like heaven in a cup. Just go here.

I should make one thing clear. I haven't had a Big Mac, Whopper, Slider or any other nasty fast food burger in at least 10 years. My stomach can't take it, and frankly, the idea of eating one of those step-above-cardboard-but-with-a-lot-more-calories burgers just grosses me out. But this weekend, I found a fast food burger that I actually want to eat! Again. And again. And maybe again. Stopped at Five Guys on Saturday because I was hungry and happened to be standing on the corner of Clark and Fullerton. Five Guys it was. My "little burger" was more than enough food for me, and I got to add all kinds of toppings for free, Grilled mushrooms? Yes, please. It took a while to get the food, but I appreciated that. I knew it meant they were making it fresh just for me. Even though I was full by the time I even looked at the fries, I taste tested a couple. I have to say, they weren't really that good. Really bland and boring. Maybe the cajun ones are better? While the fries were a bit of a let down, I think this burger totally lives up to all the hype. Which is good cause "the hype" is plastered on every available surface in the restaurant (including the bathroom stalls)!

I probably shouldn't review this place before having the pleasure of finishing an entire yummy cheeseburger, but I'm going for it. As ridiculous as this sounds I went to Five Guys while counting calories and without being super hungry. Wait, why would I do such a thing?! I know, I know, insanity. Their menu is small but they're known for their burger so that's perfectly acceptable. Burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese and fries are basically your choices, along with a zillion toppings. They didn't have my infamous "healthy" grilled chicken sandwich so I opted for the grilled cheese. Even I can't screw up a grilled cheese (but I can burn water) so the sandwich was of course good. Tim got the burger with all the fixings which I tried and it was fabulous. The seasoned fries are reeeaaallly good and they give you enough for three people. The staff was friendly and the red, white and black decor displayed all the newspaper articles raving about the place. All in all a good experience, next time I'm going hungry.

Just what I need another great burger place in the neighborhood! I had no idea what to expect upon walking into this place. I had heard polarizing mixed reviews and I was really confused by all of the peanuts everywhere. You get to select exactly what toppings to throw on your burger and they have a plethora of toppings. I also ordered fries which was a good/bad idea. They were amazing, but definitely not the healthiest fries. The burger was juice, flavorful, and most importantly addictive. I'm bummed that I'm on "The Luke Beach Diet" right now because I need to stay away for a while. When I decide to cheat this will be one of the first places I go.

This place blows. More specifically: First time I went, they were closed, but the door was unlocked. It took me three times to understand what the person behind the register was saying to me, he sounded like he had sh!@ in his mouth. Oh, if you're closed, why is the door open? Sure, that kind of ticked me off, but heck, the place is a block away so ...... Second time I went in just for the fries. What, they must do fries good, right? I mean, they only have two things on the menu: Burgers. *** *** *** And fries. *** *** *** And all the "reviews" they have posted in the window saying how good their fries are, from all those fry capitals like Denver, Michigan, wherever the fart they're from. So, I expected good fries. Seriously, fries are not that difficult to cook. And yet, from an empty restaurant with no customers in line ahead of or behind me, I got an order of undercooked fries that yup, didn't taste that good either. Oh, but they put them in a styrofoam cup, wheeeee!!!! p.s., I don't like food gimmicks. Like putting food into inappropriate containers. Remember "Sandwich in a Cup" over on Wells? Long story, short, I suspect most of the 4 or 5 star reviews of this place were written well nigh closing time (of the local pubs, that is). Next time I'll get my fry-jones fixed somewhere else. One flag. Embargo ON.

The best thing about this place is the patty. These are restaurant-style burgers with really flavorful meat, which is a great start. Coupled with unlimited toppings (a choice of about 12 different ones), a hefty portion of melted cheese and a bun that can handle the load, this is a VERY satisfying burger. Note: A regular burger comes with two patties. If you want a single patty, go with the little - same size bun/patty but without the second helping of meat. These fries are really fresh, but I'd prefer it if they offered the "double-fried" option that you can choose at In-n-Out because I like a crispier fry. Staff is super friendly and really quick. A good deal for the price.

This has quickly become our go-to dinner when nothing else appeals. The burgers are just so consistently tasty. And I love their bacon - it is almost always perfect and crispy. Usually I get the junior (1 patty) unless I'm super hungry. The fries are OK. I tend to prefer the taste of old frozen fries rather than fresh (I know, I'm a bit off). We got the spicy ones once and both of us nearly died choking - be careful, that spice is easy to inhale. For a "fast food" burger, this is the top of the bunch for Chicago.

A burger place that does not charge for a single extra anything you might want in your burger. Instead of "$1 burger" nights at places like Bar Louie, spend an evening at 5 Guys, and get Mayo, Relish, Onions, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mustard, Jalapeno Peppers, Green Peppers, A-1 Sauce, Bar-B-Q Sauce, and/or Hot Sauce with no hidden fees or extra costs.

not bad for a patty-less burger... vegi "burger" is everything but the patty - nicely grilled up green peppers, jalapenos, onions and mushrooms... add cheese, tomato and lettuce...makes for a very sloppy but tasty "vegi burger". not bad - not bad at all. very challenging to eat with a fork and knife against the foil wrapping but i survived! the fries were ok but i'm not much of a fry girl outside of the shoestring variety (ala mc d's). they are cooked in peanut oil so supposedly that makes them healthier. there were a ton of families eating there and also kiddie drawings adorned the walls - very family-oriented (during the day at least; looks like they provide late night post-bar grub being open til 2AM on weekends!) vegi's can get their protein from the boxes of peanuts offered by the scoopful (help yourself, for free).

Seems like everyone that isn't impressed with this place ordered a hot dog or a mini burger. Long story short, this place makes a fresh burger, to order and the fries are really good. The bacon on their burgers is also pretty damn thick and crispy. Also very reasonably priced considering this place gets their potatoes direct from smaller, independent Idaho farmers and the meat is not frozen but fresh. After eating here about 4 times before writing this review I came to the conclusion that these burgers are like thicker, fresher, tastier Wendy's burgers with better ingredients. I like Wendy's for fast food so, that explains why I like these burgers. If Wendy's style isn't your kinda burger, than you wont like these either. Solid four stars, this ain't no Kumas but that's not this place's niche. Good thick, fresh made burgers with a great selection of sauces and toppings, solid french fries... It's a hamburger! If you stray too far from a standard hamburger, you get that California pizza kitchen effect, some things are just meant to be left alone. Beef, cheese, patty, lettuce, etc. I don't want aoli and lump crab meat in my burger to make it all fancy. Take that shit to stuffy restaurants with no identity that try too hard to get people to spend more money on "gourmet" ingredients.

Yes YEs YES! Finally a great burger joint that I can separate from typical fast food. Especially at around 2AM... I love the fact you can order a burger for 1 price and then add as many toppings as you want for no additional $. The fries are amazing...they cut them in-house. They keep the potatoes in bags in the middle of the restaurant. Very funny when your klepto friend calls you up the morning after 5 Guys cause she found a potato in her pocket.

Burgers normally don't wow me so I generally don't get excited about them but Five Guys is just so good. The burgers are made from real meat. The fries are made from real potatoes. It's all greasy and unhealthy but so so so so tasty. The decor, if you can call it that, is low frills- red and white potato bags for the most part. But who cares? A tip: the regular burger is actually TWO burger patties- most people just need a jr. burger. And the fries are enough for 2-3 adults at least.

I started this thing were I would walk home from work and it's about 5 miles. I ended up walking by 5 Guys and I heard so much about it so I stopped in for dinner. I do think that a meal here is a tad expensive but I it was really good, I really really do enjoy the cajun fries here. I like how you can add all the extra toppings for no extra charge. This restaurant was spotless with a person cleaning off tables promptly after the table has cleared. The regular fries is more than enough for two people, i wanted to finish mine so bad but i couldn't, just too much. After finishing my meal, I left but couldn't walk any further being so full, I ended up taking the 22 bus rest of the way home. I felt like a total failure for not finishing my walk but at least I was a failure that had a delicious burger & fries.

I love when people get all angry and defensive about In-N-Out, as if it's impossible for different people to have different burger preferences, or for people to appreciate both. In any case, when I travel to California, stopping at In-N-Out is a must. However, Five Guys is still my favorite burger. I go with a pretty basic cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, ketchup and mayo, and it never gets old. No fries for me, but if you're hungry, you're getting an overflowing bag full, no matter which size you order.

Yet another place that I can say is exactly what I expected. Burgers were good and greasy. asked for a small fry, got a grocery bag filled with yummy, delicious fries.... only complaint: get ready to smell like Five Guys when you leave. I love smelling like deep fried food.

As I mention in other reviews, I love looking for burgers and fries that could be what McDonalds was like when it was fresh and just opening years ago. I got that and more at In-And-Out out west, so when I heard about Five Guys, I hoped I had found an equal. Well, it's not all the way, but it's a great start. Here's a place where peanuts are everywhere as an appetizer...great! Standing in line with potatoes, eating peanuts and surrounded by the classic red/white tiles...great! This is what a burger joint should be! Then the burger was ordered, with options galore and all free. Onions of different styles, sauces galore and...A1. Wow, this is the heaven of a burger fan. Fries are done two styles, although the spiced ones are good, I stick to the original because there's vinegar over at the condiment area. You put vinegar out for fries and you get a point in my book. Sure, it's a little more than it's worth, but only by a couple of bucks. Sure, you could go to McDonalds and get processed burgers or, get something a little more fresh and original tasting. Sure, it may not completely live up to the hype around it, but it gets close. Five Guys has made a name for itself due to the taste, quality and overall experience you get when you go. There's other options in fast food, but really, they cannot compare.

Someone needs to tell Burger King that Five Guys stole their method of charring thinly sliced meat and calling it a hamburger. I went to Five Guys to see what the fuss was all about. It was in a nice location with plenty of parking. I liked the variety of toppings but unfortunately, I couldn't taste them because of the strong taste of burnt meat. The burgers were not juicy....sandpaper topped with mushrooms, ketchup and sand would have been juicier. There is an unlimited supply of peanuts which is nice because of waiting time, Obviously, it takes a long time to cook the taste, jucies and flavor out of a burger. I did enjoy the fries and the availability of malted vinegar. Maybe I am too harsh or maybe I have been spoiled by having a better burger at a truck stop. Ditto on the 35-50 music and ugly people.

Ok so after hearing the hype, my ladies and I brought Five Guys back to the apartment for a little taste... I have to say I had high expectations for this encounter and it was sort of a letdown. The burger was ok, don't get me wrong. But it wasn't "knock my socks off" kind of good. The Five Guys are gentlemanly enough to have a long list of burger toppings that are free, but that's just wasn't enough to earn a special place in my heart. I got a bacon cheeseburger with BBQ sauce and grilled onions. Tasty and hits the spot when I'm in serious need of burger fulfillment, but not the burger of my dreams. Fries are also good but nothing special, we like to experiment so we got some regular and Cajun-style. Overall, three girls + five guys = three satisfied cravings + one awkward innuendo-filled review. Just doesn't add up.

The drink machine is really cool -there are at least 20 options, and they also serve 4 varieties of Gold Peak iced tea which is unusual. I had a burger with everything, which was really greasy and a perfect lunch after a night out. I'm not sure I would want this food on a normal day, but if you're looking for an extra greasy meal, this is a good spot. I especially enjoyed the grilled mushrooms.

Five Guys can clog my arteries any day!! My friends and I were throwin' down drinks at Gaslight and all we could think about was when we left we could finally stop by FG for hamburgers & fries. The restaurant has quotes and ratings of the "Best Burger" splattered all over the walls, huge sacks of potatoes stacked waist high, buckets of oil/fat and bulk boxes of peanuts that you can eat while waiting in line. The amount of free toppings they offer is insane...but wow...the burgers & fries are smack yo mama good! I knew they'd be the moment I saw the grease smeared paper bag it came in. You can order the burger with either 1 or 2 patties. I suggest 2 since the patties are super thick. Don't miss out on the cajun fries!! Whether you get the cajun or regular fries...eat them the right way...pass on the ketchup and dip them in vinegar!!

I have loved Five Guys since there opening on Clark street. The service is fast and the burgers are consistent. Make sure you get the cheeseburger all the way! Cajun fries are a most here! You can eat in or get it to go!\ You also get to eat peanuts while waiting! Great place to hang out for lunch or for a quick meet up! You cant go wrong with 5 guys making a burger!

For $10.51, I got a "small bacon cheeseburger,' a bottle of water, and a small fries. The fries were awful - soggy & no salt. They advertise as having the best fries ever. Maybe what they should advertise is that the portion is huge. One small order of fries is probably enough for 3 people. I'd rather have the fries at Bar Louie in a heartbeat, but even McDonalds fries are better, in my opinion. The cheeseburger has American cheese (not really cheese, IMO) The bathroom was clean, the water was cold, the service was pleasant. I think, though, that this is expensive.

Walking in, this particular layout reminds me of good 'ol In-N-Out back home, minus the lifetime-supply sacks of potatoes in sight, and the loud music.... oh, and the fun little paper hats they wear! But that is neither here nor there... Anyway... $4.60 for the mini bacon cheeseburger seemed a little steep for me, especially with $3 fries on top of that. But I did like the fact that the burger came with "premium" toppings, whereas most other places would like to charge you 25-50 cents more for say, grilled mushrooms. So I suppose price and quantity kind of balance out. The mini burger was more than filling, actually. The (cajun) fries were a plenty, too! We got two orders of the regular sized fries and could have easily shared just one. Love the seasoning (tastes like Lawry's to me)... Didn't know they had free peanuts--- I kept wondering why there was a guy digging through a box over the garbage can LOL...

ho hum...just another usual monday...meet the boys at the gym...i am told to go to five guys...i go after the gym. WOW! FIVE things about FIVE GUYS: -i purchased a cheeseburger (with everything) and cajun fries. total was $9.0FIVE. -my burger and fries weighed about FIVE lbs. -my burger and fries took me more than FIVE minutes to finish. -my burger and fries required FIVE napkins. -there were about twentyFIVE GUYS working when i was there at about FIVE:00 I am rather impressed with this place. I regret my habit of saying 'everything' when i order. the cheeseburger came with 2 patties, thick cheese, mushrooms, onions, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and all your other condiments. i think it was FIVE" tall. When you go, slow down and think about your burger, don't say 'everything' like I did. I watched them make some of the burgers and they offer fresh jalapenos, non-gooey grilled onions, and other quality extras. Today was the grand opening and it wasn't too bad when I was there. I ordered quick and got a table. I did notice the sign saying they were open till 2 am on fri and sat. uh oh. there are probably FIFTY FIVE bars in a .FIVE mile radius of that place, so be warned. FIVE GUYS should be seeing me in FIVE days or less.

I just finished a night at the bar. It's 2am. Little tipsy. What do I like to do? Eat. Eat. Eat. So, I finally popped my 5 Guys cherry. I took another virgin with me too. According to my receipt (miracle I still even had it!), I had the following for $7.94. One Little Bacon Cheeseburger with mayo, lettuce, pickle, tomato, ketchup, mustard, mushrooms, grilled onions, and jalapenos on the side. Also a side of cajun fries. I was smart enough to ask...little burger is not for just little people. Little is one patty. Regular is two...well, when I got my burger, it was a mountain of stuff and soooooooooooooo good! The fries were tasty as well, but I'm definitely going to share with someone next time and not order my own. I didn't even make a dent in the cup they were served in...nor did I touch the extras that just spilled over into my brown bag. The place was pretty crowded, and it's interesting to observe the LP crowd after 2am. So yeah...I must really like this place if I'm willing to trek to LP for a burger. Bring it on.

Oh.My.Word. I've had the fries many a time, but last weekend was the first time I actually sat down and partook in the Five Guys experience. The so-called "mini" burger was more than enough once coupled with the generous helping of fries. The variety of toppings free of charge is a plus, plus, plus! The fries are pricey. I'm generally highly critical when it comes to the value and I must confess, $5 fries sounds like a ridiculous return on investment... at first. These fries have something special about them. So special in fact, I found myself in front of Five Guys, by myself, carrying out a big brown bag full of large order of cajun fries. I could hardly wait to get in front of a tv and gorge. Not the cheapest of eats, but I give them 5 stars regardless. The only thing that would make this a better experience would be if those fries could get some curl to them...

I am from California so In N Out Burger is where it's at for me. I heard about this place from word of mouth, but I wasn't expecting it to be anything close to In N Out and my expectations were true. + Portions are pretty huge Toppings are free Free peanuts - Not as good as In N Out. A lot more expensive than other fast food places. - Large fries were 4.99! and the "cheeseburger" (which is really a double cheeseburger) was over $5! Isn't anything too special.

For a fast food burger joint, this place is right up there with In&Out, which means it is damn good. Essentially it is the In&Out of the East Coast. Must visit if you want a greasy burger.

My sister's boyfriend really wanted a burger around midnight and was raving about this place. Is it bad that the best part was the diet vanilla soda and fries? The actual burger was delicious, but mainly due to the condiments and toppings. The meat was mediocre and actually made me sick (not the establishments fault, I have a weak stomach for mediocre burger-meat). I like thick burgers, well seasoned- this one would not have been good if it didn't have all that jazz on top. I probably would go again, though, because the location was cute and it is open hellalate.
