Firecakes opened their food truck on January 29th. And, like the donut-obsessed person that I am, I made a beeline for the truck as soon as I got into the city. Of course, I checked their Twitter and Facebook pages constantly that morning while I waited for them to reveal their location. It was parked at Adams and Wacker, conveniently located right by Union Station. There wasn't a line when I walked up. I ordered a Valrhona Chocolate Iced donut, which is yeast raised. It's fairly large, which makes it worth its $3 price tag. They also put it into a plastic container with a lid (see picture), which makes it easy to carry around without the icing getting all over the place. I also got a free buttermilk old fashioned for being one of the first 50 customers to stop by the truck that morning. They have bags with handles if you need one to better carry your goodies. The chocolate iced was amazing and definitely something I can see myself having over and over again. The Valrhona chocolate is so decadent and perfect for my super sweet tooth. I cut off pieces of it at a time and savored it throughout the day. It lasted me until about mid afternoon after lunch. As for the buttermilk old fashioned, it was OK, but I'm not the biggest fan of buttermilk old fashioned donuts. I think they are a bit boring. Nevertheless, it was made well and held up quite nicely. I brought a lot of it home, and my hubby-to-be polished it off over the course of a few days. He really liked it, so perhaps I'll bring another one home for him in the future. On my second visit, the truck was parked at Clark & Monroe. This time, a few more people were in line, so word that the truck is open must be spreading. I even saw a man get what I believe to be two dozen donuts. Yum! I'm sure his office will be happy with him. I know I would be if someone brought donuts to work. Anyway, I digress. This time, I resisted the urge to get the Valrhona Chocolate Iced and opted for the Classic Jelly instead. This donut will set you back $2, which is the same price for donuts from another doughnut truck that frequents the Loop area. This donut was filled with a raspberry and blood orange jelly, which is made in house. They serve it to you in a clear sleeve (see picture). Honestly, I was terrified that the jelly would spill out and make a big mess in my lunch bag. Thankfully, it did not. I cut it in half to see how much filling was inside it. There is plenty. However, be aware that it does ooze out quick, so you'll want to eat it fast. This one can be a touch messy to eat with the sprinkled sugar on top and jelly inside. But, it's worth it. I really enjoyed the filling and could clearly tasted both flavors inside it. As for the staff, the workers that I've interacted with have been super friendly and helpful. With regard to the selection, I saw them serving Vanilla Iced, Honey Glazed, Buttermilk Old Fashioned, Valrhona Chocolate Iced and Classic Jelly. They also serve La Colombe coffee. Definitely check their Twitter and/or Facebook pages for the exact location of the truck. As of now, they do not have a set schedule for locations. Also, I'm not sure if the flavors will change. I definitely would like to see my personal favorites, Coconut Cream, Valrhona Chocolate & Espresso Cream and Peanut Butter Cup available as well as any other specials, if they choose to make them. Overall, I am beyond excited that Firecakes has decided to enter the donut truck arena. I definitely look forward to sampling more of their goodies, and hopefully getting a picture of the truck or two once it is warmer!

I was so excited Firecakes was parked at Monroe and Wacker this morning on my route into work -- I wasn't even looking for them, they were just there. Like a surprise. A yummy treat on a Tuesday morning. The buttermilk donut for 2 bucks is so incredibly worth it. It was like the most delicious buttermilk biscuit with the most delectable glaze and a solid crunch. Amazing.

If you have a sweet tooth and donuts are your poision; or you're like me, and I'm not a fan of donuts, normally, unless they're over the top amazing, and your nose finds the truck emblazzoned "FIRECAKES" - stop by. Do not pass go, do not go anywhere else for a sweet treat unless it's a Beavers Donuts truck. Stop at the Firecakes donut truck and order a Valharona chocolate topped, or a vanilla topped. They have several other flavors that are probably just as yummy as these two simple flavors. It's the quality of the ingredients that makes these taste so good. You can't go wrong with FIRECAKES. They are wonderful and so many times better than the competition! Cheers to whoever decided to put these delectables on a roving truck!

While I never really received a response to my previous reviews questioning their frequent lateness/unreliability with regards to adhering to the locations they publish on Twitter, I have noticed that recently I haven't had any issues finding them based on their tweets, so I'm updating my review accordingly. I also tried their vanilla iced for the first time today. It was amazing - maybe even better (dare I say it?) than the honey glazed, to which I'm normally very loyal. A common problem I have with iced/frosted donuts is that the frosting is too sweet, but that's not the case at all with theirs - it's the perfect level of sweetness and the vanilla flavor is awesome. If they sold half donuts so I could mix and match a honey glazed with a vanilla iced, I'd be on cloud nine - but seriously, you can't go wrong with either. The donuts are also enormous. I bought some for the office today and just got a half dozen because they can easily be cut into pieces for more manageable serving sizes (but let's be real: I can - and did - eat an entire one by myself).

It was about 8:30 am on a Wednesday and I was briskly walking to the merch mart from union station. With my earbuds in, you could say I was in my own little world that morning. Until... I saw a dancing bear on Adams and Wacker! Just as soon as I saw this action, a line started to form. Without even knowing what's going on, I of course jumped in line. Once I was able to survey the situation I realized I was in line for the Firecakes truck and they were giving away free coffee and donuts! Score! Love me a good marketing promotion. I seemed to be a little late to the game, so all they had left were the classic old fashioned donuts. I gladly accepted and indulged in a coffee as well. Once I got to my office I finally was able to dive into this sweet morning sensation. I enjoyed my coffee, but it wasn't anything too fancy. Just caffeine filled and hot like I like it. The donut on the other hand was scrumptious! It was perfectly glazed and firm, but soft and chewy on the inside. I kinda felt naughty enjoying this little delight as my first meal of the day, but hey - definitely put me in a great mood! I'll for sure be keeping an eye out for the Firecakes Donut Truck when I'm in the city from here on out.

I'm a sucker for a cute truck. The first time I tried Firecakes was at their brick and mortar location and to be honest, I was unimpressed. I went with their apple fritter, which sadly doesn't hold a candle to the one at Glazed and Infused. I had written them off as an also ran in the doughnut fad until I saw that cute little stainless steel truck outside my office. I am not much of a morning person. I'm always running late and as a result hunting on something quick to grab for breakfast before heading to work. When I stopped by the truck, I was shocked at how huge these doughnuts were. Every time I get one, at least one person between their truck and my desk comments on the size. Pricing is pretty reasonable; I think they go for $2.50 now. They were playing around with the price, first it was $3 and then $2 and now it seems to have settled in the middle. I typically go with the Honey Glazed or Valrhona Chocolate yeast doughnuts and they are fantastic. The chocolate is my favorite of the two, sweet, but not artificially sugary, it's a wonderful way to start my morning. They also have a vanilla glazed, jelly and buttermilk. I'm glad I gave this place a second shot and I'm glad they like to hang out by my office (although I reserve the right to change my mind when my pants no longer fit).

Fantastic doughnuts, friendly staff, super convenient, and by far the most reliable of the doughnut trucks. I would generally never do this but after reading the other review bashing the "logistics" someone needs to defend these guys. They are almost always in the same spot at the same time and when they aren't they are within a few blocks. The fact of the matter is that in the two weeks I've been going to this truck they have been far more consistent than the other local doughnut truck which I won't mention by name. Not to mention these "fire cakes" are just as good if not better quality wise (trust me and try the peanut butter filled doughnut). P.S. you should be ashamed for bashing the logistics of a new food truck....

I highly recommend their award winning Tahitian Vanilla doughnut. The delectable frosting is more like a cake frosting that has black speckles of real vanilla bean and sprinkled with crunchy vanilla-y orbs on top which add a nice texture to a giant airy fresh yeast doughnut. Ahhh-mazing!
