There are not many places you can go to get great Mexican food anytime at night... as long as you can handle the neighborhood it's worth the trip. the food is always good and we visited again this past weekend after our night out. The steak burrito is great and is bigger than anyone can finish! If you're in the area it's a great place for a late night Mexican feast.

Decent little spot near my crib.I've always enjoyed my meals here. Not bad.Service is decent.Always find street parking no problem.Prices are pretty much the same as other taquerias.Nothing really stands out but always hit the spot when I'm hungry and in the area.I've been coming here for years.Enjoyed their Tampiquena today. It was GOOOOD!!!!

Food was just ok, nothing I would order again. Service was awful. The only words the woman behind the counter said was"cash only", no greating, no thank you. In 2014 it's annoying when you don't take credit cards. There are plenty of other places in the neighborhood so we won't be back.

Food is extremely flavorful and made fresh right infront of you! The service is very friendly and they suggest items to get with your meals. It's very small, but home-y. I love it. They do only take cash which is fine by me, why should I care? Cash is king baby! I've been a fan for years as well. Keep up the great work!

I love El Gallo, it's cheap and delicious. To those if you who claim it is in a bad location, you're nuts! The neighborhood is not bad and the location is great. The service is usually quick and the waitress is friendly. Go to Ell Gallo!!!

I was here, again. This time at 1:30 am on a Sunday. Shame on me. What the hell? We went after a wake in my husbands ole neighborhood. This may sound strange if you are not aware of the Southsiders native customs. Be assured that although to all non-southsiders this seems strange perhaps even in appropriate to be out boozing untill the middle of the night after a wake; to the Southsider it is not. The review: The good part, it was open. The bad part, apparently they do not believe in any sort of seasoning. The guys were nice, and they fed me which was sorely needed, so thanks for that. Come on though, how about some seasoning, even salt!? The pickled carrots and jalapenos were great, biggest darn carrot slices I have ever seen. I commented to the guys, they laughed at the little blond exclaiming about the HUGE carrots. The innuendo was there. Whatever, I will fill stereotypes for a laugh.

Had steak burrito and it was runny with juice/grease and the meat was grizzled and chewy. Not happy. Will go to summit for burritos from now on. El faro and el famous destroy this place.

Stopped here with friends on a whim after seeing the good reviews. I'll definitely be back if/when I am in the area and craving Mexican food. Huge fan of this place - the al pastor tacos with cilantro and onion were very tasty. Brought me back to memories of some tacos I had in Puerto Vallarta. Rice and beans were good too. The guys were friendly and cooked up our take-out order quickly. Yum! *Cash only*

If it weren't for these fantastic yelp reviews, I would have continued to pass by this place like I have for the past 3 1/2 years that I've lived in this neighborhood. I would have passed by because it really doesn't look like much on the outside. Plus there are a ton of mom and pop Mexican places in the area. The El Pastor tacos are amazing. Sometimes the pork can be fatty, but not here! It shows that the quality of meat is a lot better. I think it was $1.75 for each taco. My friend got the 3 taco meal for $7. You get a lot of food for the money. The guys were really nice and friendly. Since it was our first time here, we had to look at the menu for a while and we felt no pressure to order quickly or anything. The food was ready in less than 10 minutes! Open until 2am! YAY for yummy drunk Mexican food!

So my wife, a friend and I all had a hankering for some Mexican. El Gallo Tapatio is two blocks from my house, but we never tried it. All the reviews say the steak burritos are orgasmic. Who am I to argue?! The quality of the steak is excellent, not fatty or rubbery. The tamale are great too. Cash $$$ only!

Others opinions think this is what GOOD food is. Mine is that El Gallo Tapatio is NOT it. Reading between the lines of the reviews it seems most rave about this joint cuz its late and they are drunk....ahem..well, I tried this place SOBER and early and it SUCKS - BIG TIME. All I tried was the much tauted El Pastor...I gagged on the first bite. It tasted like it was marinating and mixed in with cheap chorizo..Its hard to find good chorizo btw, and to me, most of it is like eating dog food flavored with lime. Worst ethnic sausage known to man. The pork was greasy and too finely chopped. WAYYY overkill on the cilantro. NOTE: If places like Lalos and Altotonicos is one's idea of what good mexican food is - then I fear your obviously D.O.A tastebuds just might hit another jackpot with this joint - Y.U.C.K Once again, for an overall great variety of mexican food go to LA Fiesta just before 87th Cicero, (they also have really great three milk cake slices) Zaca Tacos and even Pepes is better than then El Gallo, Lalos and Altotonicos.

I've been going here since high school. They're open late and their food always hits the spot any time of day. Location kinda sucks when your on the wrong side of the tracks and freight trains are usually long. Aside from the location, the food is delicious and affordable. Hits the spot when your craving Mexican food.

I remember coming to this place all the time during high school back in the day. The food was so clutch here that I once ATE AROUND a dead moth I found in my taco dinner. IDGAF. Real niggas finish their food like a fucking Spartan! Till this day my friends still tell the tale of when I ate around "The Moth". That was the night I retired this place and took my talents somewhere else. Food was prettaaay good though.

I have been going to this place for years and it is awesome for late night. Growing up on the Southside we used to go to Riley's Daughter on a 111th and Pulaski then head over to El Gallo on 111th. Needless to say I was excited when they opened this place in my old stomping grounds. Service is good but I don't come here for the service. I come here for the steak tacos! These things melt in your mouth! Salsa and chips are great too and very cheap. Reminds of the old days. I don't go here as often as I want to, but when I do it is always a treat.

I don't get why this place got such high ratings. It's not the worst I've had; not close to the best. Tacos are ok. The thing about this place is their prices on dinners match some of the million dollar Mexican restaraunts in Chicago. The chips and salsa are weak, the guacamole is too creamy (so much better a little chunky with fresh lime and cilantro) The pastor taco was good...hardly any fat but Atotonilco still has the best pastor in the city. Don't drive across town to come here. Ok if you in the area.

the chips!!!! the salsa!!! mmmm. there is something about southside kids and late night mexican runs. my friends and i have frequented this place so many times. the food = excellente the crowd is also really interesting, hahaha sometimes you get undercover cops and people from the bar right next door and just random random people. i've even run into friends here unexpectedly... at like 1-2 am. the bottom line... whoever is there, we are all there united for the same reason... delish mexican food. i usually get the veggie burrito ;-) although if you like spicy try the chicken!!! the steak is also yum.

Great local place and it's open late. They have great guacamole; it's pretty spicey! Only complaint is that it's a little on the pricey side for a quick carry-out burrito place.

What a great joint. The tortas are outstanding. They only accept cash, so make sure you've got it on you... No credit or debit.

Great food. The steak burrito, horchata, and guac are my favorites. Bring cash with you-they don't take credit cards.

The food is excellent. AWSOME selection. The burritos are the shit. Service is excellent. The lady at the register cut our burritos in half which is what we wanted, and we didn't even tell her to. So they are food smart also. They have a good selection of drinks also. GOOD FOOD, SERVICE, & QUALITY.

Not too many good taco places in the 60638 area but this place is the best in Garfield Ridge. I love their steak tacos and tortas, the meat taste good. The tortilla is a little smaller than average size but not as small as the traditional Comales tacos. The steak quesadillas are very tasty. The chips and salsa are good too. Each time I get an order to go which is most of the time when I come here I ask them to throw in a few chips in the bag and they do it for free. Just make sure you have cash they dont except platic.

Their freaking food was so good, small little place to go and sit down with a couple of friends and chill out. Perfect little mexican food shack.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
