El Gallo Bravo No 5 is one of my favorite places to eat in Chicago. My favorite burrito in the city. Veggie Burrito with Grilled Chicken and an order of cheese fries. I don't know about the rest of their stuff but that is what I've always gotten and I love it. Even though I went in there basically every night the employees seemed to never remember me or my regular order so it's kind of impersonal and they always got confused when I wanted to add chicken to the veggie burrito but, that didn't bother me much. Highly recommended!!!

You want a late night burrito on your way home from Carols at 3 AM? There's no better place in the city.

If I could give this less than one star, I would. I went here the other night and was pleasantly surprised to see folks eating after 8P. Oh wait, it was all take out. And I understand why. What a weird odor inside. Order a pork taco, steak taco, and guac w/chips. One of the tacos was bland and the other was overly salty. The guac was mostly salsa and again, tasteless. The chips were, I don't know what, but even a quick nuke in the microwave didn't improve them. GROSS, GROSS, GROSS!!!!

This is the place that gave me my first stomach virus. I assume it was due to the lack of hygiene. Never eating here again, that's for certain.

This is a go-to place for burritos and nachos. Now that I've moved away from Chicago I miss this place terribly, both for its long hours and its cheap prices. I have tried to find other places with better nachos and I always failed. As others have said, the guacamole is great, and the flan is almost decent. Also they have Mexican Coke and Pepsi made with real sugar, the same Mexican Coke endorsed by former Mexican president Vincente Fox!

Oh how I love these "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants. And it's pretty damn authentic. It was my first time here the other day. My friend recommended getting a burrito so I did. First of all, it was super cheap. We're talking $5.50. Second, these things are pretty ginormous and filling. Bigger and better than something you can get at Chipotle or Qdoba. And lastly, it was delicious! They use these mutant-size flour tortillas and some super delicious ingredients. I got the beef burrito (rib eye steak), and it was really good. The wait was not long at all. And you can tell a lot of people come in for takeout. Too bad I don't live in the area. I'd be here all the time. Oh, the little "plaza" where this restaurant in has really bad and small parking. I seriously wonder why they tried to cram so many parking spots in a small area. Other than that, it was an awesome experience. Very reminiscent of some good ol' Texas Mexican restaurants.

Steak burrito, hamburger meat is what it taste like. And why are the T.V.'s so loud? Subway next door has a better steak sandwich than this place. Fail.

Not great. I've had better. Actually I've had better within walking distance of this place.

The fact that this place doesn't have only five star reviews is simply wrong. You are a bad person if you don't like this food. It's joy. It's like eating joy. Even a four star rating means you are probably guilty of petty theft, you jerk. Love this place.

Get the steak torta, it's really good!! I've had my share of tortas and this one takes the "bun" (torta= Mexican bun, I think lol!).

Love the food, authentic mexican food. Steak tacos and burritos are insane!! Huge menu. staff is friendly too.

Not great, not awful. Free parking, close to Dunkin Donuts if you're feeling a little donuty. The loud volume of the TV was a little annoying making it hard to hear the conversation at the table. Restroom was a little on the dirty side but usable. As for the food it's not special but cheap.

Had some carry out food here recently. Steak burrito and cheese quesadilla to go. Music was BLASTING when I walked in. No one turned it down or took my order until the song finished. Nothing was terrible, nothing great. Satisfied me at the time, but I wouldn't order again. Meat in the burrito was not good. The quesadilla was good, though it's tough to mess up such a basic quesadilla.

This review is well overdue since I have stumbled through here dozens of times (hate to admit that!) after an evening of fun. The same woman is always working and is always patient with us when we come in at 3am! She's the best! Anyway...the food. AWESOME. Honestly the best burrito I've ever had and I've had many. The steak burrito is amazing as is the hot sauce that comes with it...ridiculously good. The tacos can't be beat either...I ususually go for the pork tacos. Yum! And the guacamole is so delicious. The prices are cheap, the service is good and friendly...and it's some of the best mexican I've had. It's a place you can eat at sober or drunk :)

Quick bite of a burrito de Carne asada and an orchata (rice water)... I am never in the mood for a burrito but I decided to get one and this was on the way. The front cashier was very nice and I was happy that she was, because I wasn't sure of this place. I told her that maybe I would have "un burrito de carne asada con todo", and she replied: "Oh you are going to love them, they are really good". I actually did and I never eat in my car but there I was. Eating in my car. I totally enjoyed this burrito since it was not one of those giant bigger than life burrito but a burrito that you could handle. The sauce accompanied by it was just right. I will definitely try them again. When I first walked in here there was a lady playing a game of poker (machine) but you would swear she was at the casino because she was playing like there was no tomorrow. I was going to ask her if indeed it gave money but I thought I better leave it alone. The place is small but with enough tables to seat at least 15 people comfortably. They were okay.

Very good food. Hits the spot when I am craving Mexican (which is weekly). Thankfully I live around the corner so it has become our go to spot when we want cheap good authentic Mexican food. Open late! so when you come home drunkkk

How come I have never had a Torta before? Damnit I was missing out. One drunken evening I was introduced to this Mexican style sandwich at El Gallo Bravo, another fabulous strip mall joint, and it was delicious. First time dining in I woofed down the carne asada Torta at $4.25. To be fair I went in non-inebriated and ordered the Pollo Torta which was just as good sober. Free chips and salsa when dining in. But you have to add the guacamole for 3.50 - yep it's a must. Only thing that grinded my gears was the fountain pop for 3.50 and .60 cents for refills. What a rip. My suggestion would be to walk two stores down to 7-11 and grab a double Big Gulp for half the price...after all it is BYOB. This isn't a place I would drive across town to - but it's in my neighborhood and open late. Free parking in front and room to dine in. Authentic came to mind and the prices were legit. If you're in the area and thinking about Mexican cuisine I would consider this place mucho bueno.

I have grown to love this joint. I live nearby and frequently stop by. The food is great and the people are friendly. If you want to take your food to go, I would call in your order ahead of time because it does take a little while to make everything. If you dine in, you can expect loud Spanish soap operas on the tv, which I believe only enhances the experience.

There is better available, but this is just fine when you need a quick fix of Mexican flavor. Always hospitable staff, inexpensive, and tasty food. Don't forget a pastor taco with cilantro and onion.

It is a really hot day today and we decided we would take a walk down the street to this place in hopes of finding a cool safe haven where we could get some grub. The place wasn't cool. The food was below par (burrito was hard and carne asada had no flavor) Refills on drinks cost 50 cents. The chips were generic and the salsa was luke warm. The service was courteous. Prices were awesome. All in all, its cheapness makes it a good spot if your short on funds and want a sit down restaurant, but if your looking to satisfy a craving, this isn't the place.

Really really really good. After the recent heat wave broke, my taste buds kicked back in, and I was craving tacos bad. This place does great tacos. Corn tortilla option which I love, good quality properly cooked steak, not all gristley and gross and half cooked. Fresh finely chopped lettuce and tomatoes, alittle onion, fair amount of cheese. Two tacos and a small soda were $4.40. Eats under five bucks that fill me up and delight my taste buds never fail. Came with two salsas and sour cream on the side. I can see why this is the 5th El Gallo Bravo.

I love me some taqueria burritos! None of that fancy Rick Bayless crap, I'd choose the #5 over Xoco any day of the week! That being said, I have some serious explaining to do: the carne asada burrito is perfectly constructed for your eating pleasure. The ingredients are fresh and my favorite burrito is loaded with steak, rice, beans, salsa, cheese and sour cream- this hefty load is not one to mess with! Yeah, I suppose I COULD save half for later, but you know what- there's probably a rule somewhere in Man Law that prohibits REAL men from leaving leftovers. Of course there are exceptions, like a 56 oz. porterhouse or that "burrito as big as your head" nonsense. Either way, that awesome hot sauce is so addicting, at some point burrito becomes a vessel for more sauce. Come hungry and leave full enough to hold you over until lunch the next day, all for around $6? Count me in!

I hate to start out my Yelp career with a single star, but my experience here was so unpleasant that I had to review it. I stopped by today for an hour to do some readings and have dinner before going to work. I had chicken tacos (the 2 taco dinner) at $5-something and a diet coke. Pros: The free parking lot made me want to try this place out. Very cheap. Cons: I have been sick all night. I asked for chicken on my tacos, which was confirmed by the waitress, but the meat that was on my tacos was definitely questionable at best. It looked like steak but tasted kind of like overly fried chicken, so I have no idea what the mystery meat was. I have a strong stomach and rarely get sick, so it takes a lot for me to find something like this. I don't recommend it at all.

This place used to be my absolute favorite Mexican dive to order to-go food from. I even have the phone number saved in my contacts. Lately, though, the service has been SLOW. Both times I've phoned in a to-go order and the one time we ate in, I had to wait a VERY long time for my food. The food is good. Not greasy, tastes hot and fresh always. I usually get a vegetarian burrito, and I love their's because they put avocado slices inside, not just globs of guacamole like the other places. But I also very much like their guacamole. And they always give you lots of chips, which are usually hot and fresh. But the wait. Its just too much considering just how many similar restaurants there are in Chicago, and how this one really isn't on the cheap side. If you're hungry late at night and they are the only ones open or you live nearby, you will not be disappointed. But be patient. The lady I always see in there is very nice, and I don't really know if its one particular person's fault that it takes so long lately. It just does. So be prepared for that, and then go and enjoy your food.

I come here several times a month. The nachos con carne comes BIG and doused with toppings of awesomeness. Writing this review is making my mouth water. I also recommend the burritos. Again... HUGE. The el pastor is my favorite. If you're looking for posh, don't think about stepping into EGB numero Cinco. The shiniest thing you'll see here is the beautiful juke box that plays all your reggatone favorites. This Uptown classic is no nonsense in-you-face Mexican food at it's best.

All reviews are relative right? El Gallo Bravo (EGB) is a fast food Mexican restaurant that doesn't boast "authentic" Mexican (I.e. Al pastor from a vertical broiler, etc) but for those of us who live around the area, it is where price, value, convenience, and service perfectly meet. I'm a more of an adventurous eater, and their tripe taco is memorable. Deliciously fried so it has a crispy exterior and tender interior, great flavor from the marinade and batter -- get it with just onion, cilantro, and lime. The lengua (tongue) was tender and had good flavor but definitely plays second fiddle to the tripe in my book. The al pastor is also very solid. They are very generous with their meat which I appreciate. The salsa that they serve if you sit down is crazy spicy, but I almost respect that more because I see it as a last stand to all of our requests for cheese and sour cream to be plopped on their dishes. The lady that works the register and acts as the waitress is also very attentive. If you're within a few blocks, EGB is worth the shot.

Dear El Gallo Bravo #5, I'm so sorry for being negligent about my review. You've seen me through nights where I've had too much to drink for a few years now. Your employees should be up for sainthood for not slapping all the drunks that roll through here to get a burrito on their way home. Thanks for not slapping me when I'm one of them. warmest regards, Kourtney Hint, no one needs to eat the entire damn burrito so split one or put the other half away as soon as you get home.

I really enjoy coming here from time to time. I live nearby and I often walk here with my roommates for lunch or a late night dinner. The burritos are incredible, and you can't beat the price. It's never too busy, so you get served very fast, and I haven't once had a single mistake made with my order. I'm sure they hate seeing me walk in late at night, though, as this is my typical go-to for late night drunken eating!

For some reason I thought this was a brilliant idea last night around 11pm, after a kickball game and several beers...hmmmm. Well, honestly...it could've been worse :) The service was a bit gruff, but its a 24 hour Mexican joint in a strip mall so I wasn't expecting the royal treatment. Spanish speaking soap operas blared from two TV's and there was a neon posterboard sign that simply stated "delicious flan." I have reverted back to my low carb lifestyle (I know, beer...yeah, I know), and ordered the chicken fajita dinner with no rice and no tortillas (Yeah, Im barrels of fun, watch out!). It was good, but a bit overpriced at $9.09. (not sure what the thought behind that pricing scheme is, but oh well). It was plenty for 2 meals though, so I'll let it slide...it was a hot mess of a plate, and I guess that is exactly what I expected/desired/needed/wanted to coat my tummy. Open 24 hours, free parking lot, decent food, decent service, clean enough, room to "eat-in," but I am still in love my man, Mr. Salsa down the street....

As far as a quick burrito goes, this place is great. I always get the vegetarian burrito. They put no onions on their burritos unless you request them. I don't like onions, so that made me happy. I ate here early evening this weekend, but usually eat here after having a bit too much to drink. My only complaint - they don't deliver. If you want a quick, delicious, no frills meal. Give it a try.

I was riding by the place on a Saturday morning on my bike. My tummy was aching for breakfast. I came to a screeching halt when I saw the hand-painted (or magic-marked) sign: Breakfast Burrito - $2.99. I was the only customer there, and there was only one worker. The place is very clean, well-lit, lots of tables. The menu is written on the wall above the counter. I ordered the burrito and a papaya juice. The burrito was quite large, as they have come to be everywhere. It was filled with scrambled eggs, potatoes, sour ceam, onions and cheese, so a good option for you lacto-friendly wedgie-tarians. The tortilla seemed very fresh as did all the contents. And the salsa's both red and green were fantastic. They reminded me of the ones at Los Nopales. Kind of creamy. So I debated the eat half/take half home, for about a nanosecond. I ate it all, assuring myself I would need the calories and nourishment to carry me through the day on my bike. Total damage was $4.90. I definitely want to try their other offerings.

Dude... seriously?! How can you screw up a burrito? I got a burnt pork burrito (yes, black hard meat) here. I took it back for a replacement and was given the blandest, hopefully thoroughly cooked wrapped bundle of yuck. And so I ponder once again, how can you screw up a burrito...

Have visited once, since it's in the neighborhood. Order: Chicken tacos, rice, and beans. Up arrow: veggies seemed fresh, rice and beans were par Down arrow: chicken extremely dry, and flavorless consistency of chicken feet (or at least what I think they would taste like) Likely will not return.

I'm sitting here with my pants un-buttoned after eating, yet again, one great burrito. I've tried many burritos in the city, including those from Pilsen, and I keep coming back to El Gallo Bravo #5 (not sure where 1-4 are located). I always get the same thing so I am doing an extremely valid comparison between various burrito joints - carne asada, rice, beans, cheese, salsa, avocado - and El Gallo Broavo #5 wins hands down. Besides tasting great the burritos are huge and I should only be eating half but they taste so good that I just can't stop. Now, many may wonder why I'm only giving four starts. Well it's simple . . . since I haven't tried anything else on the menu I had to deduct on start based on my limited test sample. If I was rating it only for the burrito it would be five starts.

Had I reviewed this place before today, they would have got 5 stars. I have ordered here a few times because it's close to where I work and every I have had tacos (carne asada, chicken, al pastor) but of course on the day I venture out (today) and get a tostada de carne asada, the shell they gave me is freakin stale. I think I'll take it home because it will work perfectly to hang those pictures that have been leaning against a wall since we moved in. Ugh. But I still think it's a good place for a quick meal if you're in the need and they have pop in the glass bottles! Woo-hoo!

Why Five Stras: 1) 24 hours 7 days a week 2) Large Portions 3) Fair Prices 4) Authentic Greasy Mexican Food in Chicago 5) My carbe asada burrito was very good

Be careful if you order on line. I was pretty impressed with the ease of ordering on line until I got there, only to find their system was down. I recreated the order and it was more than what was adverstised on line. The food was good, but I'm really dissapointed with the order process. So, beware. If you order on line, call and find out if they got it....better yet, call in the order.

Very serviceable and clean Taqueria. The carne is good, as is the al pastor. Like the location and the easy in - easy out parking lot. Good stuff.

I live in the neighborhood and I love Mexican food. The Brave Rooster is, hands-down, by far, the best Mexican restaurant around. Some times I think to myself, "I wonder if anyone else is as good at El Gallo Bravo?" So, in order to be sure I try them out. I've been to almost every Mexican place in the area and no place comes close. No need to search around for any other Mexican restaurant, this is it! In my opinion it's one of the best in Chicago. And its not just a place to go after the bar (its good then too, but...). I've had dinner there many times. Grab a six pack from down the street and have an awesome meal for less than $20.

I typically come in here at least once a week for my taco/burrito fix. I would love to give them 4 stars because the food is actually quite good. But I am taking one star off because once (just once) some really hot jalapenos ended up in my chicken burrito (which I didn't request). I ended up crying jalapeno tears and hitting things around me to try to ease the discomfort. Not cool.

Really good food at a very reasonable price. EGB#5 is full of friendly staff and they offer a sit-down service if you'd like to "eat in". The chorizo has just enough cinnamon to make anyone happy!

This is not a metaphor, fable, allegory, analogy, figure of speech, trope, simile, like, such as. I dreamt about these burritos last night, cradling one in it's warm wrapping like a giant newborn kitten. It's been 2 months since I moved from Chicago to Brooklyn and it's only just after 9am on a dewy Tuesday morn, so you know I'm not yanking your toehairs, babies, I want a lengua burrito for breakfast BAD. My man and I call these Butter Burritos because WTF why do these taste so good if they don't just grill up a stick of butter and smear the meats in it? We lived down by Clark and Leland but regularly made the trek down to the Brav in sub-zero blizzard conditions, horizontal downpours, butt-sweat inducing heat etc. for our fix. Valentine's day last year we spent in the parking lot here because we found a kid from the burbs at 3am drunk off his mandibles, face implanted in the 7-11 curb with a gash on his nose. We called his parents. Turns out his sister just got married that day in Lombard and brother-in-law arrived about an hour later in his SUV and PJ's to collect what's his face who, by the sound of his mom on the phone, is probably still right now in deep deep turd stew. Point being, the Butter Burritos after that were the sweetest ever to be had. El Gallo Bravo has ruined all other burritos for me. I live in Bushwick, Brooklyn now where ALL there is to eat is Mexican and mediocre pizza but don't nobody hold a candle to my Brav. I'm so sad right now.

SIGH. We had such high hopes for El Gallo Bravo. Good reviews on Yelp, 5 minute drive from our house, open 24 hours with ample parking. But alas, we were disappointed once again. We got four carne asada (steak) and al pastor (pork) tacos. At first, the tacos looked pretty promising - the meat was overflowing and looked tender and juicy. Now normally I dont mind having a little bit of fat mixed in with my meat. But these tacos had HUGE pieces of hard fat that nobody could chew through. I just lost my appetite right then and there. And it was all throughout all of the tacos. I didnt particularly care for the al pastor either but my bf thought it was pretty decent. All I'm asking for is a taco made with skirt steak that is actually cooked when you place the order (not just pre-cooked meat reheated) on top of a tortilla slightly dipped in oil and toasted on the grill like Atotonilco's on 47th and Ashland except without the 45 minute drive. Overall the place was ok- quick and efficient service, cheap prices and passable food (if you're drunk enough). Just make sure to pick out the gristle before you start chomping away at the tacos.

Ok, ye riders of the #22 Clark Bus. Y'all know after a long night of imbibing, a burrito from El Gallo Bravo as you exit at Montrose is one of your favrotie things in the week. Sometimes, I dream about their burritos. I dance with them, I blow kisses at them, I wink and bat my lashes. But in real life, I eat them hearitly, because... yes, friends, they do indeed create: MY FAVORITE BURRITO IN CHICAGO. There... I've said it. I'm in love. His name... El Gallo Bravo #5.

This is just an ordinary taco/burrito place in this great city, but something about it just has me. I've been going here for about a year and a half now, and I know it's crazy to say about a place like this, but I do crave some of the stuff here. And I'm also guessing that if there's 5 of these places, then the other 4 must have done pretty well (unless the other 4 burned down in a fire or something). Jokes. I've gotten many things on the menu (and let's face it, when you order a taco or a burrito dinner, you pretty much will have everything on the menu in that meal you just ordered) and they all taste very fresh. The food is not overly greasy or have that make-you-feel-gross feeling the next morning (I could name some places, but won't). The nachos are great! An abundance of guacamole plopped on top... amazing! Nothing fancy about this place, but since it's just a regular ole taco stand with above average food, I give this place the big 4. I wonder how the other 4 places are...

Having neglected to get a wink o' sleep Sunday night, my utter laziness kept me from being able to make dinner Monday night. I was jonesing for something Mexican or Indian, and having been burned by a Mexican delivery place, I wanted to get out of the apartment for some nosh. And there, amid the hunger and lazy was Ryan S. telling me about El Gallo Bravo -- mere blocks from where I lived. So we agreed to meet up and down some nachos (him) and something cheesy (for me). Ryan had expressed his position as a regular at El Gallo, and it wasn't until the waitress took my order and then looked at Ryan when the both of the smiled, that I knew he was right. She knew what he was getting, without missing a step. I have to say that the salsa was a relief. Often times taquieras have the green sauce and the red sauce, neither with any type of consistency other than soupy. This salsa was chunky and spicy, the perfect salsa in my opinion. As such, I pretty much ate 3/4 of the basket of chips. Sorry about that, Ryan! I ordered the taco plate -- 3 tacos (chicken), beans and rice. I'm a sucker for beans and rice, and consumed them quickly and efficiently. I'll admit I only ate 1.5 of the tacos, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around tacos in Chicago. They're missing something; lacking in flavor and consistency. I'll also admit I was pretty stuffed from all the beans, rice, and chips/salsa. Nevertheless, I still ordered a cup o' horchata to go on the way out. The meal was a little pricey for my taste, but the salsa really knocked my socks off. If only she had refilled the basket of chips ... so it is with this that I give El Gallo a mere three stars. It hit the spot, but the spot was then not feeling so great. Maybe it was the beans. But the salsa, I'll go back just for the salsa ...

When I said they are open all night, I meant, they are open all night the days they selectively choose to be open all night. Still a great "drunk burrito" place although stop calling me a retarded vegetarian gringo, hombre.

Went here for a very late night dinner (close to 11 pm). It's def. the nicest late night place, I've been to in awhile. My bf got 2 steak tostadas with beans and rice. He said they were delish. I got the carne asada with a melted cheese enchilada on top. Also came with rice and beans with taco condiment (avocado, sour cream, tomatoes, and lettuce). Our total bill was less than $20. My carne asada was delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection and I can't believe normal beans and rice tasted that good. YUM. Def will go back again.

The ambiance is non-existent, what with the padded plastic tableclothes stapled to the tables and the terrible Univision soap operas playing constantly, but it is an all-night taqueria, right at the corner of Clark and Montrose, and it's always done right by me. I was introduced to El Gallo Bravo by a stupid ex-coworker of mine, and while maybe not the most intellectualy gifted, he certainly knew what he was talking about when he endorsed, as a native Texan and the grandson of a Mexican, the chorizo here. Get anything with the chorizo - you won't be disappointed. I favor the dirt cheap, incredibly delicious chorizo tacos. They don't have a minimum for credit cards here, which is nice, because I never carry cash and when you're drunk and nearly out of money in your bank account the night before you get paid, being able to get a orange Jarritos and a chorizo taco for right around $3 is spectacular. If you live in the area, it's the best taqueria around here. If you live in say, Logan Square, you might be more spoilt for choice (Taqueria Moran), but I've been hard pressed to find any place on the north side with chorizo as delicious as Ell Gallo Bravo #5.

Worst guacamole ever (except for that crap in a tube). It was bitter and sour, which sounds weird, but it's the only way I can describe it. It was atop the veggie nachos I had ordered that had no real flavor except for salt. Even the sour cream was tasteless (cheap stuff, maybe?) Maybe this was an old batch of guac and not what is usually served, but I make guac all the time, and it's so simple. There's no excuse for a Mexican restaurant not to have good fresh guac. Extra star for the nice lady at the counter.

My Goodness. I fell into this place just by happenstance and I've fallen in love. I ordered a vegetarian taco salad and from the shell to its fillings it was delicious. It was filled to the rim with guacamole, sour cream, rice and beans (that tasted made that DAY) and a small amount of cheese. Sure it was cold by the time I got it home but it tasted great at room temperature which says a lot for rice and beans. I'll fall into this place on purpose from now on.

Great Service, Great Food and the Restaurant is always very clean. They offer free chips and salsa and plenty of tables to get a good meal at a good price. It is located in the strip mall on the corner of Montrose and Clark Next to The Subway and Payday loan store.

Oh the 7 or 8 burrito places I can walk to in under 10 minutes this is easily in my top 2 or 3. The burritos are huge and not loaded down with rice and lettuce and their tongue is exceptionally tasty. Yeah, I like to get the weirdest thing on the menu when I go places. When you eat in you get free chips and salsa which is solid and an order of guacamole is worth the couple bucks it costs. The place is also unusually clean and sparkly and even colorful for a burrito joint with its fancy blue wall tiles and stainless steel counter.

Great quesadillas, love the "el pastor" (pork) - and it's BYOB!

We moved to the Clark & Montrose vicinity six months ago and are still getting used to our surroundings so it took a while for us to try this place (granted, we frequent the DD and Sev11 in the same shopping center often). 4 stars based solely on guacamole. I was craving guac for dinner (dare I say, guac is the cornerstone of a healthy dinner...) and picked some up. Lots of flavor from the cilantro and red onion and there are chunks of tomato. Smooth guacamole is just unnatural, don't you think? I'll definitely be back for the real food.

There's nothing particularly special about this place, but I would have given it 3 stars except for one thing. I came in and asked for a bean and cheese burrito (a staple of my Arizonan upbringing) and the lady behind the counter was completely confused by this. She finally responded "So... you want a vegetarian burrito with just beans and cheese?" Sure. Fine. Call it whatever you want, just give me a tortilla, some cheese, and some beans all wrapped up together. My husband thought his meal was fine, but nothing to write home about.

Really hits the spot in the middle of the night. Sometimes I go during real meal hours, too, so I think I've experienced the gamut. I generally get steak. The burrito is really good, but I like the soft tacos best. Sometimes the burrito is weighed down by a lot of iceberg lettuce. If you don't finish the burrito in one sitting, it's not something that lends itself to reheating. The chips and salsa are also a highlight. You know how sometimes chips, especially when there's a fold, get extra fried and transparent? That's the way the entire basket is. I don't know about you but that appeals to me very much. The salsa is nearly pureed, but nice and spicy. The horchata is not very good. They don't put it on ice like some places do (it's in one of those fountain dispensers), but instead they water it down ahead of time. I'd rather have good but melty than homogeneous. They have a website at gallobravo5.com , but use it only as a guide. The one time I tried to use it to place an order, I walked in to pick it up and they said they weren't checking it, I'd have to order again there. Oh, and bonus points for the decor. It's a bizarre trompe l'oeil setup where you're supposed to think you're outside at a street vendor.

It was a mistake coming here at about 2:00 AM to try and get my eat on after a night drinking. First of all the service was very cold. It's like I was putting them out when I came in. It took the cook a few minutes to even start making my food. At this point I knew I was in for a long wait. When I got my food they skimped on everything. Needless to say the food was not good. Didn't taste fresh at all. I will avoid this place and keep going to Ranchito down the street.

After driving by El Gallo Bravo the past few weeks I finally checked it out - and it was great. The prices are fair for the freshness and quantity. I had the Chorizo burrito with chips and guac. The burrito was huge, delicious, and had the right mix of meat, rice, beans, and salsa. It only tasted better with each passing bite. I will be going back to this place as my default Mexican place. If you live in the area and have a craving for a decent Mexican food, check it out - way better than Chiptole.

when a taqueria runs out of rice and beans, its hard not to suspect that it might be a drug front. it only happened to me once... but come on guys, get your life together. moving along... the food is pretty tasty, decently priced and they are open 24 hours (as all good businesses should be). good 'nuf for me. oh, and if you enjoy telenovelas, you can get your fair share here.

Very reasonably priced, the portions are well prepared and they are fast. The restaurant is within waking distance and it's a regular stop for a fast meal.

My husband loves this place. He gets the chicken burrito and I get the veggie burrito. We always order rice and beans on the side b/c the refried beans are really good. This place is consistent and quick. The girl taking your order is friendly, too. I've only gone here for take-out, so I don't know what it's like to dine in. I would recommend it for a quick, good meal. Oh, and the portions are huge. I always end up with half of my burrito left for lunch the next day.

I would like to recommend the veggie torta with avocado and (my favorite) green sauce. The chorizo taco dinner was recommended by my boyfriend who eats meat! For around $5.00-$10.00 it's a great deal and is so delicious! I would give this place 5 stars when dining out late after a night out. It''s always nice that you can catch up on your favorite telenovela while you are there too!!

I usually like to give places the benefit of the doubt and try to understand why food and service may go wrong..like maybe it was a busy day, or maybe the cooks were feeling off, but this place was TERRIBLE...there's just no excuse to why a restaurant would give a paying customer really bad quality food. My friend and I were in the mood for Mexican and we checked out spots that delivered to her place. We checked on grub hub and this place had great reviews and delivered! It was about 7:30pm and we placed the order. We ordered taco dinners (chicken and steak- nothing too crazy) and waited for our food to arrive. The food didn't arrive until 9pm, and I just wished it wouldn't have arrived at all. The beans tasted like they came straight from a can, the rice was cold and dry, and the steak flavorless and cold as well. The chicken tacos...well let's just say I wish I could give this place 0 stars based on the chicken alone. I was expecting pieces of chicken, or shredded chicken, but the filling my taco had looked like someone had chewed the chicken and spit it into a tortilla. There were pieces of fat and bones in this crushed chicken and I really couldn't take more than one bite. That bite alone was enough to make my stomach hate me the next day... There are so many good Mexican options in Chicago. Please don't be fooled by the 4-5 star reviews on here and grub hub!

Sorry....I wanted so badly to like this place but I can't. First time going there about 2-3 weeks ago. Missed removing couple of items from burrito, totally excusable. However, the next day my partner was not doing very well gastrointestinally speaking. This most recent trip was last Friday. Food took 45 minutes for a waiting to-go order. Got home, no meat on Nacho's Con Carne.....Con Carne means with meat in Spanish so really not sure how they got that one wrong. Burritos were all jacked. Ingredients left out of wrong one, orders flipped or something. They were busy, so that likely got the best of them. Sadly, a day later it was my turn with gastrointestinal issues. Had leftovers yesterday and yep....gastrointestinal issues again today. No Gallo bravo food on Saturday and miraculously no issues Sunday. Just cannot recommend this place with slow service, inconsistency on order fulfillment and the stomach issues they have caused, and not just once.

El Gallo Bravo No. 5 has become my home-away-from-home in just two short weeks of living here - open whenever I'm hungry and staffed by brisk but warm servers who give you crunchy chips and salsa while you pour over your options. EGB5 is not great at everything and yet I am charmed by it's clear plastic covered tables and efforts. For a more detailed rundown of what I've had so far: Al pastor - possibly the biggest disappointment; cooked dry, possibly because the pork they use is too lean. No pineapple :( Tripas - when I eat intestines, I'm looking for a balance between chewiness (the good kind) and crispy edges. These tripas were mostly crispy, veering on too dry, but the flavor was good and I give any taquiera points for daring to offer it. Lengua - wondrously tender, quite possibly the best lengua I've had besides Nuevo Leon's lengua milanesa Bistec - too lean to represent what I love most about ribeye. Fun in a huaraches, which seems to be a longer and more flattened version of sope, dressed with grilled onions and poblano, lettuce, tomato, and queso fresco. Beef soup - broth could have been more flavorful, but a big bowl (enough to serve 2-3) with fixings (rice, tortillas, cilantro, onions). You do have to work a little to enjoy the chunks of beef and vegetables, but I should hope readers know what they're getting into when they order Mexican (or Cantonese!) soup Horchata and agua de pina - refreshing, satisfying, not too sweet

I ordered from this place twice within the past week. They aren't the fastest place to get food, but that's because they have a small team and they're managing a restaurant, in addition to what seems to be a pretty high traffic take-out gig. The first time I came here, I ordered a tostada - pretty standard fare. You can't really judge a place on a tostada, my only gripe was that the avocado wasn't quite ripe. The second time, I ordered a steak torta, which was pretty damn good. Excellent bread, and perfect amount beans/meat/cheese/lettuce/tomato/sour cream. We came here after Lollapalooza tonight and I decided to try the al pastor (pork) torta. Ordered to-go, got home and realized they gave me a beef burrito. No big deal, people make mistakes- I'm less than a block from where they're located, so I packed the burrito up and walked back. I walk in and tell the lady that I think they gave me the wrong order by mistake. Instead of apologizing, she tells me, "No, you ordered Burrito Pastor!" I told her to open up what she gave me, and she would see that not only wasn't it an al pastor torta, but that it was also a STEAK burrito. She opens it and sees that it's nothing close to what I ordered and says sorry. Tells me to keep the burrito, and they'll recreate my order. I tell her I have no use for it, she gives me attitude and says "WHATEVER!" I wasn't trying to be rude, but knew that if I took it back, it wouldn't get eaten. Thinking back, I should have just taken it and given it to someone homeless. I'm 100% Mexican, but don't look it. The two counter ladies proceeded to berate me in Spanish, thinking I couldn't understand them. They were even talking to their cooks about me, which I thought was petty. In the end, I got my correct order, but didn't feel comfortable eating it. I just couldn't believe the lack of customer service. People make mistakes, it's ok. But I walked my happy ass back, after they effed up my order, and was met with attitude. The thing I ordered actually cost less than what they gave me, but no one offered a refund of the difference. Definitely won't be going back.

I m very disappointed about food here. We were waitting 20 mins to get our food ready plus the steak here is over cook and dry.and the price is not cheap at all. For sure we will never go again.

The greatest chicken taco in the entire city. I travel all the way from Pilsen to eat here. You have to order the TACO BRAVO with pico de gallo. You get nothing but chicken breast. You have to ASK FOR CORN tortillas, otherwise you'll get flour tortillas (still pretty damn amazing). You can choose between pico de gallo or guacamole with the TACO BRAVO, but you want to go with the pico de gallo. Their horchata is good too.

Most important detail..open till 3 am on weekends. For me this is one of those places you stumble by after a night out. It is perfect for that late night craving for Mexican. Its pretty good, but I have lived in CA and been to Mexico so i have some top notch Mexican cuisine to compare to. Server is great and food was fast. Free Chips and Salsa if you eat in!!

I ordered on grubhub. I ordered two three taco dinners. They sent me one two taco dinner. I asked for a refund because by the time our food arrived they had closed. The manager said I would have to call grubhub for a refund. I called and they told me that the restaurant only authorized a refund for one two taco dinner... But I was missing a three taco dinner, not to mention the fact that now I had to order more food from a different restaurant just so that my wife and I could both eat dinner that night. Anyways, the food was just ok. But I don't appreciate being ripped off, so we won't be returning.

Hi, I'll have the Disease de Corazon y Los Diabetes, por favor. I may as well say this next time. Living across the street from this place for the past 9 months has resulted in NONE of my 32x32 pants to fit any longer. May I just say, if you are eating at Chipotle and not this place you need to get out of Chicago right now. I heard that Elburn is supposed to be pretty nice. They have a Walmart next to the Chipotle... enough already. If you're here to complain about the quality of one of your dishes, may I also respectfully point out that you are stupid. If you aren't coming here for the Tacos or the Burritos you're doing it wrong. Ordering burgers, fries, or a "sandwich" (they're called 'Tortas', Homes!) here is like ordering the Crispy Tacos at Burger King. (Ok, those aren't terrible) Not all meats are created equal! Tacos must be ordered with Chorizo, Tripa (yes, that's a sheep stomach), or al Pastor. Burritos are best served al Pastor. The Carne Asada will not blow you away, but the meats I mentioned above most certainly will. Also, the people here are great. Always attentive to customers, no matter who is working they will come to your table to make sure everything is to your liking, and offering you complimentary chips, salsa verde, salsa rojo, and ice water. To the naysayers who have an issue with the plastic table covers, or the fact that there are three TV stations (Telemundo, Telefutura, and Univision) that play at all hours of the day on a volume set at 55. You people may as well slap an abuelita. This is what a quintessential Chicago taco place needs. Keep up the amazing service, El Gallo, and DON'T YOU DARE TURN THE VOLUME DOWN ON MY STORIES!

Told the server I was allergic to cilantro. Half way through my burrito, found cilantro, but not soon enough. Spent the rest of my Saturday in the ER, the worst part, no sort of compensation. Did not take anything off our bill. I used to love this place, but now I will never return!!!!!

I love this place. I've been to all the little Mexican spots in the neighborhood, but here they make the best salsas. I always go for the green one on my tacos. Fast, open late and telenovelas or soccer to watch as you wait for your food to come out.

3 taco dinner (2 lengua; 1 carne asada) + 1 medium rice water = $10.42. Price rating: 3.5 Atmosphere: 4.5. Not far from Montrose brown line. Looks to be clean, several people order takeout, nice workers. Haven't checked bathroom yet. Horchata rating: 3 - has a weird after sensation... Like spit/ loogie (sp?). Tacos: *Salsa verde isn't spicy at all? Used all of 1 for 1 taco. *if you want cilantro you have to request it. *taco's served w/ sourcream which I will omit next time. *Meat inside tacos are fair amount. *Lengua (4.5) soooooo good (needed a little bit more salt). *Carne asada (3) needed a bit of salt also. The taste was eh.... Interesting. 'Okay,' to say the best.

I should be embarrassed by how much I love their chicken taco salad but... I really love their chicken taco salad. The chicken is seriously delicious, really juicy and flavorful. The shell is crisp, but not burnt, and they pack it with all the taco toppings your heart desires (no skimping on the guac!). The only downside I've found is that twice now I've been here and asked for no cilantro, only to arrive home and find my food covered in cilantro. No bueno.

Close to my apartment, very friendly staff. We're big fans because they have tongue, tripe and other goodies we enjoy. Their guacamole is so-so and the flan is a big disappointment- otherwise eat everything else there and be happy. And be careful at night, as some really aggressive homeless people live here and surrounded my car as I parked in front to place a takeout order, knocking and rapping on the windows and demanding money. It was scary, and so we order pickup over the phone now and my fiancé comes with me or will go by himself to pick it up.

It's drunk food. OK but nothing exceptional. Tortas give you good bang for your buck. Stick to the steak as that's usually the freshest.

It's the Gringa or nothing baby and I'm not talking about a woman in this instance. Flour tortilla stuffed with marinated pulled pork, flat top fried ham slices, chihuahua cheese and sometimes pineapple. It's typically served with sour cream and lettuce on the side. Good shit and it costs four dollars. A steal for late night! I'd originally heard about this place because someone was passing a rumor that they serve breakfast burritos during late night. This is FALSE. I've had the soft tacos with tongue, which was decent and a enjoyed a couple Gringas! Take that any which way you like. Ha! Inexpensive late night taqueria, good people watching during late night, weekends till 5 am and parking is usually available in the lot. Extras carry a surcharge which I find silly, i.e. $.65 cents extra for jalapenos in a sandwich or burrito.

This is my go-to Mexican place, all the time. Fast, easy service and good food for a good price. The veggie burrito is my favorite- normal burrito with rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese- and avocado. The tortas are amazing too. Infinity thumbs ups.

This place is an awesome late night place. It's quick, cheap, and the food is good. The chips and salsa are free if you eat in and the salsa is made in house along with the guac. I have tried many burritos from different places in the area and the one here is my favorite by far and its only 5.50. The food is served quick and the servers are always really nice and take care of me just fine.

***THIS IS A WARNING FOR FUTURE CUSTOMERS*** SHADY EMPLOYEES!!!! Please hold on to your cell phones and do not forget them there (its a possibility since many drunk people come in to get food at this place). I was here the other night at 1:00am and stayed at the restaurant about 10 minutes to close. The mexican waitress told us she was closing soon and wanted us to get out. So we paid, I left my water bottle on the cash register (unintentionally) and I forgot my phone on the table. I saw the kitchen cleaning up and putting foods away. So there was no way for more people to come in the restaurant to order food (kitchen was closed and I understand the restaurant industry...I too am a waitress). Once I got home I realized that I forgot my stuff. I had a friend who lives in the area to go over the restaurant to get it for me once it opened at 10am, but it wasn't there. The morning shift waitress said that the late night shift waitress might have taken it for safe keeping, my phone AND water bottle was not in the lost n found. So I called at 7pm (when the late night waitress shift begins) and she sounded very uneasy and says she saw nothing and that there was a bunch of other people who came in the restaurant that could have taken it. She was incredibly busy since it was 30 minutes to close (It was 1:55am when we left) and did not notice my phone or water bottle. SHE IS OBVIOUSLY LYING since the restaurant closed and there was no way for people to come in and dine/eat. I KNOW THE WAITRESS STOLE IT!!! And I want to write this review so that the lady who served me that night could READ IT and feel GUILTY!!!! Karma is a bitch. I am never eating here again. The food takes forever to cook (on a slow night), the flautas are bland, the guacamole needs more salt, the cheese on the refried beans is cold and just tasted lazy. BAD PLACE. Fuck you guys!

This place is meh. The last few times I've ordered here, I have been extremely disappointed. My last visit, We ordered two steak tacos, a steak torta and a flan. The meat of the tacos were greasy and full of chunks of fat and gristle. My friend's minced steak torta was pretty much the same except they loaded tons of cheese and beans in it. Their flan was rubbery and bland, I could've bought a better one at a supermercado. I recommend walking three blocks down to Mr. Salsa then spending money here.

I've had better, I've had worse. Good prices and tasty food. The telenovela playing in the background was a little loud for my taste.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
