So I read on Chicago Eater that Duran will unfortunately close by the end of the month with hopes of reopening across the street during the summer of 2016. I felt pretty bummed and quickly scrambled over this past weekend to get my fix. I brought my partner in crime and we each ordered three open-faced sandwiches. It was just the way I remembered it to be and I'm still feeling bummed. I have tried a handful and I would repeat most of them: curry egg salad, Hungarian salami, Duran cubano, hummus, shrimp salad, roast beef piccante, caprese salad, and brie. Each piece is a little work of art and you should not hesitate to snap a picture first. They are petite and stacked with fresh ingredients and quality meats. You can easily snatch a good deal at $10 for three sandwiches and a drink. It's about the same value as your typical lunch. I will probably make another run before they close and I am really banking on them to reopen next year.

Duran is a great little gem in the River West/West Town corridor that is a must. We held our friends' baby shower there, and it couldn't have been any better. Tracy (owner) and Karrah (catering manager) were lovely and super accommodating. They both went above and beyond to ensure we had the perfect day. The food is on point. We had their sandwich platters, and the variety is great. They are open-faced and the presentation is really pretty. We had meat, seafood, veg, vegan, and gluten free options for our guests. Everyone raved about how delicious and fresh the food was. We also had their chocolate and vanilla cupcakes (made fresh in house), and the buttercream is divine. The service from the moment we contacted Tracy up through the day of the shower was attentive and excellent. I even had a follow up e-mail in my inbox to ensure that we were pleased with everything. This is truly a neighborhood gem whether you are having lunch, tea, pastries, or an event. They went above and beyond, and we will be back. Thanks Duran!

So I really love this space. I had a friends baby shower here and it could not have been more perfect. I HIGHLY recommend Duran for showers, food, drinks, coffee, tea...you name it...it is perfect. It has such a great vibe to the space! Tracy was amazing. She dealt with all of us crazy ass planners with ease and professionalism. The staff was fantastic. Everything we asked for, they provided. You ROCK! The food...everyone LOVED the sandwiches. AMAZING! Lots of variety. They even carry vegan, gluten free, veggies, etc...you name it, they have it. The cupcakes were to die for (mmmm, buttercream). And perfect presentation. Clean, crisp, euro...fantastic! Freshly squeezed OJ...YUM! Freshly brewed tea...oh yeah! The space was PERFECT! She let us decorate the shit out of the space...not that it needed it because this sandwich shop is already way cute. I am so happy we planned it here and to be honest, it was SUPER reasonable in price in comparison to some of the other places in the city. They also have a cutely landscaped patio, small parking lot (but lots of street parking near), great variety, very nice staff (thanks Tracy and Stacy).

Service: Lady behind the counter was friendly enough. Food: Shrimp Salad: amazing. super bouncy shrimp. delicious. Egg salad with Salam: diced to perfection. Very yolky flavor. Definitely a win. Parking available in the back. Purchased a Yelp deal. Greatest $5 spent. Can't wait to try the crab salad. They said they don't have it before 11am.

Like what Randy Jackson would say on American Idol, "hey, dawg...listen...this wasn't your best performance today. You were pitchy throughout the song, here and there." I felt similarly about Duran this afternoon. However, I don't necessary believe in first impression alone, ableit it was still important. Perhaps I didn't order their signature dish or one of their sandwich specials; I went with the salmon bagel instead. You can customize the sandwich by selecting the type of bagel you would like (in my case, it was garlic & herb), up to three (3) toppings (red onions, cucumbers, and arugula), and a choice of cheese (smoked mozzarella). For $8 on an average-sized bagel sandwich, it was considering "borderline" pricy, even for the city of Chicago standard. Although the bagel sandwich didn't impress me much, I liked colors of the chairs (alternating between bright yellow and sky blue), great utilization of the limited space (with a long table attached to the big window and a number of stools facing southwest), and plenty of bright light coming in to the cafe. That was disappointing that the food I had was the weakest link. The location was also as prime as it could be. The CTA Grand Blue Line station was literally steps away. This visit wasn't going to be a deal breaker between Duran and myself; it might just be a wrong choice of "song." I shouldn't force a Chicagoan to do what a New Yorker does the best! In other words, I would be back to try something else on the menu.

Don't come here of your seriously hungry, it's more of an "eh I can eat" place to stop by for a tasty snack. Lunch is decent, the breakfast bagel is life in a box!

Really friendly, good prices and ambience. Cute decor inside and out. Wifi. But .... the owner says they are closing on 8/30/2015 with a possible move across the street!

This shop has my favorite little European foods in the city! Their mini sandwiches are just so good! I love everything. The Hungarian Salam is probably my favorite. But I also love the egg salad. Humble but good and delicious. You can also get caviar on a sandwich. It's so tasty. And they're little squares so you just keep eating and eating and not feeling bad at all! Haha they really get you with those itty bitty sandwiches. I've also had their tartine sampler: Roast beef with caramelized leek, oven roasted tomato, gorgonzola Ham, gruyere, red onion, Spanish green olive Smoked mozzarella, roasted peppers, mushroom, marinated artichoke all three of which are delicious. I'm not sure if this is normal but my friend also comes here all the time so they let us bring in our own champagne for some make your own mimosas, which of course is awesome. On occasion you can also get real borscht here and it makes me so happy. That purple soup just puts a big old smile on my face. Everything is great. Stop into this warm and cozy little shop anytime you need to taste the Old Country. You won't be disappointed.

Really good sandwiches and atmosphere. A bit pricy given the size, but the ingredients are fresh and probably worth it. 10$ lunch special (includes tax) is a definite winner.

I feel that the manager of this establishment was a little rude to me. The other employee--both kind and courteous--explained that they had some bridal shower drama earlier, but the hostility towards me seemed targeted. I initially thought I was just being paranoid, but it was later pointed out to me by my friends that she was specifically rude to me. At any rate, the food here isn't bad. The leek salad open-faced sandwich was my favorite. The establishment is clean with a relaxed atmosphere. They have a good selection of RTD beverages, including boxed water and spellegrino. The quiche we got was runny, and the pastry was slightly undercooked and tasted of flour. I probably wouldn't get it again. From what I can see, the tartines are a little better. Edit: Responded to owner. Good luck!

I took my boss there for lunch today, both of us were impressed with the sandwich trios that we received. We were so busy oohing and aahing over the flavor combinations and edible art on the sandwiches that we didn't get much work done...lol. we split a carrot/zucchini muffin which was delicious as well. Our only complaint was our American appetites were bigger than the European sandwiches. Boss said he would bring his wife there. I will bring my daughter there too. You now have several new happy customers.

This place is great at what they do: European style open-faced sandwiches. The roast beef picante, brie, and turkey olive tapenade were great. Fresh and healthy. For those with a bigger appetite there's traditional 2 slices of bread or bagel sandwich options, but why would you go here for that when "European Sandwiches" is in the name of the restaurant. I will return to try more tasty mini sandwiches.

I had heard about this place for a while and then decided it would be a good place to stop by before Shakespeare in the Park. They also have a coupon on Yelp, so that didn't hurt either. We came later in the day on a Saturday and they didn't have everything ready but the wait was pretty easy since their $10 deal of 3 sandwiches (only 1 seafood) comes with a drink. The owner came out and talked to us and the staff was really good about providing some utensils/napkins since we were going to eat them quickly. We saw the same place in Budapest recently so we know this is a very European style of sandwich since they have a Hungarian salami sandwich. Overall, it's a good place to try a variety of high quality sandwiches done with care. Parking is pretty easy around there and the place is clean with salad and pastry choices as well.

Miraculous and basically all that I need in cuisine. Savory option combinations galore with the presentation of party pastries. Tapas in the most elegant and eloquent sense of the word and so reasonable it's almost treasonable. I had the picante, brie and salmon options and could eat them again n again. It's about time someone takes an icing tip to butter n herb condiments!

I ordered the lox sandwich. The sandwich was constructed with generous amounts of veggies. The edam cream cheese was a perfect complement to the salmon. Coffee was good quality and comes with a free refill and the service was spot on.

Thought I'd show Duran a little love for the great interaction I had with the staff here. I was charging down the street, in desperate need of a bathroom, and I'm at the point where I'm like "I'll buy a damn bagel or something, just let me use your bathroom". So I see this inviting little storefront and wander in, prepared to buy something of little value for the privilege of peeing. Not only does the kind shopkeep refuse to let me buy something as a bathroom pass, she also GIVES ME DELICIOUS FOOD, since they were closing for the long holiday weekend. Folks, if I lived in Chicago, I'd come back here in a heartbeat. They make this killer bruschetta-eque open-faced little bread rounds that are both savory and sweet... totally unexpected but amazing. This cute little corner establishment is worth a visit if you're in the area.

A really nice space both inside and out. You could sit here and work or relax for a bit. I think that's the point. Like a coffee shop with unique bites. I also think a try of these sandwiches would be fun for a party. We came in for the lunch deal. It isn't filling but it is definitely delicious! I tried the crab, curried egg, and cucumber. All were very good. I think the egg was my favorite of those. My boyfriend tried the turkey, fish and salmon. I think I liked his turkey more than my 3! The staff is super friendly and helpful. On our way out we tried a baked doughnut and a cupcake. They were delightful! Its a unique place to meet someone and hang out. I will remember it the next time I'm looking for something that's different and not heavy.

This is a nice spot. The prices are a lot more reasonable than I expected them to be. You can get a great meal for under $10! I sat down for a breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, bacon and potatoes. It was good. I really liked the potatoes. The eggs were perfectly scrambled. I also got a roast beef sandwich and some ganache butter cookies to go. They were tasty as well. The staff was nice enough. It's worth checking out.

This place is truly special, and despite its somewhat confusing name, a first class cafe hidden in plain sight. The mitteleuropa ambience, boutique baked goods, and coffee/espresso drinks are all of a very high order. And it's just a very pleasurable, inviting room. For the record, I've tried the sandwiches once, and they too were wonderful.

I used the Yelp deal I get three delicious and unique sandwiches for just $5 including a drink. Caprese - a traditional basil, mozzarella, tomato combination with a boatload of flavor for its small size. Fresh mozzarella was seasoned to perfection. The Slovak - melted cheese, spinach, and marinated mushrooms. Yummy and unique vegetarian option, very good. The Banana - you really can't go wrong with the banana nutella combination. Plus, they caramelize the banana slices and top it with toasted coconut. A great way to finish the meal! I had never had European, open-faced sandwiches before but basically they are bruschetta like dishes with unique toppings. Think half of a sandwich. The staff was super friendly and helpful. For such quality food, the prices are great - around $3 a sandwich and most people get three.

Incredible sandwiches. My wife and I stopped by today and tried six different ones, and for the most part, all were very pretty, very tasty, and very fresh-tasting. The picante roast beef, shrimp salad and crab meat salad were standout. Space is great and the staff behind the counter were friendly....and this is a pretty original idea (at least for US sammie shops). My major problem with Duran is the price/value proposition; for $10, you can get three sandwiches and a sparkling water. But three "sandwiches" is a bit misleading; for someone 6'1", 185 (me), three Duran sandwiches equals "eat the rest of your lunch somewhere else" because this was basically an appetizer. For dinner, I would have loved Duran as an appetizer and then dinner in River North. For lunch? My budget is $10, and Chicago has so many sweet deals for this price point that it's tough to imagine going back. (For most normal-size adults, I think you need at least four sandwiches, and some of my hoops-playing friends would need 7-8 of these to feel like they were full. At $3-$3.50/sandwich, that adds up pretty quickly!) So: buy the Yelp deal. $5 for $10 makes Duran a very good bet and fits the value proposition MUCH better.

On June 7th I participated in hosting a Bridal Shower for 21 people. Just the right amount of people to fit comfortably in the space. In addition, we rented the entire space from 230-5pm. This gave us privacy and plenty of room to open gifts. Set up started at 2pm.. arranging table cloths, flowers, nuts and candy. Lots of planning and meetings went into the preparation and both Tracy (the owner) and Karrah ( her new catering manager) helped make the event a success. Front end servers helped too, this was a joint staff effort. Now onto the FOOD: everything was tasty and looked very attractive. We had a variety of open faced sandwiches ( shrimp salad, egg salad, crab salad, veggie delights, roast beef and turkey). A mixed green salad with goat cheese, almonds, and apples came with a delicious salad dressing. Drinks were Passion fruit iced tea and coffee. Now proceeding to the desserts... YUMMY mini almond croissants, heart shaped butter cookies with strawberry jam centers and filled butter cookies with chocolate ganache. Highly recommend going there for brunch, lunch or sponsoring an event. You won't be disappointed. Lastly, one observation sandwiches left over were roast beef and turkey. It cam as a surprise to me! lkc

Just went here for the first time today and had such a wonderful experience with these little open faced sandwiches. They were all so delightfully flavorful and made with quality ingredients. I seriously can't wait to go back here. This is a new find amidst the handful of restaurants within walking distance around my office. I got the lunch special of 3 sandwiches and a Pellegrino. I got the Salmon, the Sardinella, and the French Ham. All REALLY GREAT! The flavors were all so unique and rich. I think I could have gotten a 4th sandwich, because I was still a little hungry with 3. Overall, I think I have a new delicious place to eat :-)

Charming European café, friendly staff, and adorable, delicious sandwiches make Duran a perfect place to have a lazy weekend lunch. The variety of sandwiches (all open-faced) is astonishing, and are priced between $2.50-$3.50 each. They're meant to be ordered in multiples, so don't go expecting to be full with just one. They recommend getting at least three. Sandwiches are displayed in a case, but are made fresh throughout the day. If you don't see it in the case, they will make it for you. Ordering *only* three is the hard part. These are little works of art and beautifully presented. The ingredients are thoughtfully chosen and carefully arranged; each one a mini masterpiece. There's an abundance of vegetarian options (hummus, asparagus, tzatziki, a special "vitamin" sandwich), seafood (shrimp salad, Spanish sardine, salmon), as well as French ham or roast beef. Truly a dizzying array from which to choose. I opted for the lunch special, which was a choice of any three sandwiches and a small bottle of Pellegrino (or coffee), and selected the egg salad, hummus, and roast beef. The egg salad was light and adorned with chopped fresh chives, and it was delicious. The hummus one was topped with small, halved grape tomatoes and some fresh arugula to give it some punch. The roast beef was atop a smear of chive cream cheese mixed with horseradish. Yum. Three sandwiches is just the right amount to feel satisfied. It was pleasantly filling and not gut-busting, so you won't ruin your appetite for dinner. This establishment seems more geared to women than men; the sandwiches are dainty and I imagine it might take more than a few to quell a man's appetite. These are not overstuffed sandwiches; the meat and fillings do not runneth over. In addition to all the mouthwatering sandwiches (which are total eye candy), they sell pastries, tea, La Colombe coffee, and organic juices. Duran is definitely a welcome change from the same-old, same-old.

Friendly staff, nice little sandwich shop. The menu is quite large -- ranging from veggies to meat with eggs in between. The sandwiches are good. Remember that the portions are supposed to be small.

My co-workers made fun of me for going here. Because I dropped $19 bucks for a euro lunch and also stopped at Pot belly's on the way back to the office because I was still hungry. Apparently decent steaks can be bought in the same price range, I'm told. I thought this might be an interesting spot for a sandwich at lunch. And they have a $10 lunch special, 3 sandwiches + coffee (or bottled water). So I divvy biked my arse over. I understood in advance that the sandwiches are small. And open faced, you know, like on the continent. But these are the size of maybe 2 Ritz crackers each. There should be something on their website you can use to get an idea of scale. True, they're made up just so, like a perfect little dollhouse. I scarfed down my 3. Still hungry, I figured, what the hey, I'll have another two. No dice. I think it would take about 10 to be full. Seriously. On the way out, I opted for a macaroon for $2, which is like a european oreo, except really sweet and mushy. To be fair, the sandwiches are decent. I don't think the ingredients are anything special, but given the presentation, I give then an A- overall. They would make wonderful appetizers. So don't go here for lunch. This is a cafe. For drinking coffee and maybe a light snack. Also, bring at least a $20 (or more if you like sweet oreos).

WHAT is going on here? There doughnuts are phenomenal. Yes I like glazed and infused, doughnut vault, stan's but they are all the same style and pretty much taste ( sorry it's true). I had an old fashioned doughnut with chocolate ganache which are rare as free parking in Chicago these days. YUM. Also I had a little shortbread cookie with ganache on the inside, it was delicious. Great portion sizes and prices.

I like my women like I like my Duran European Sandwiches...petite and pretty. You almost feel bad scarfing down these little works of art. It's like eating an endangered species or something. Yeah...they take a tad longer to prepare, but you know it's worth the wait when random strangers will be trying to snap pics of your lunch. They're small, but at 3 and a drink for about $10 it's right around the same value as any other place. Their egg salad is super fresh, they use quality meats, and the combinations are super creative. The only thing I don't like about them is again the fact that I feel like I'm macking down on a mini Mona Lisa. They have a great patio that they just opened as well so my advice if you're looking for a fun lunch...pop over here, enjoy some summer sun, and check out these babies that would make a Subway "sandwich artist" sh** their britches.

Love Duran! I WISH so bad that they had avocado, but staff is super friendly and the food is super yum. Love the concept of little sandwiches, and they also make good egg & cheese bagels all day. Their vegan/gluten-free chocolate chip cookie is to die for. And they make a damn good latte. I work near by come here every week for a treat :) would definitely recommend!! (please get avocado!)

This place is absolutely amazing. The sandwiches are small and open faced but the quality of flavor makes it worth it. They also carry some lovely teas, Colombe coffee and speciality drinks such as Rose Lemonade and curiosity cola. Definitely stop by here for a lovely snack or lunch. A true treat to your taste buds.

I came to this place starving and wanting something fresh and healthy to eat. Walked in the door and the guy behind the counter told me the kitchen was closed. Ummm your hours say OPEN TILL 6. It was 5pm when I walked in...and the kitchen closes early? What a disappointment! Why would they stay open till 6 and not have the kitchen open... Makes no sense!

My latest visit to Duran went shockingly not so well, and I am afraid I need to dish out 1 star. I walked in as another customer was ordering. I waited several minutes, received no acknowledgement, a simple nod, a hello, or "be right with you." My order, which I've ordered many times before at Duran, is pretty straightforward. Bagel with cream cheese, toasted, cut in half, and iced coffee with light ice. Each order took some explaining which I was totally fine with. The iced coffee threw the barista for a loop. His solution to the light ice was adding extra water. I asked him not to do so, as the whole reason I ask for light ice is so the coffee doesn't get watered down. All I was asking for was 3-4 less ice cubes in the cup, but there was a disconnect, so I told him to scratch the special request and make it per usual. The situation quickly became uncomfortable. He walked into the back and started to complain to the kitchen employees about my request. The other customer waiting and myself overheard the entire thing. I have never felt so humiliated! Talk about customer service 101, which clearly seems to be lacking at this place. If you're going to talk smack about your customers, at least wait until they leave the building. Soooo unprofessional!

Finally ate here and really happy we did! We had a gilt city voucher for 2x-3 sandwich combo + coffee. Though the sandwiches are small, they were really tasty! The caprese was pretty safe but the chive cream cheese was a great addition. The beetnik and roast beef picante were fantastic. The smoked salmon was also good. Wouldn't order the salami or French ham again as it was too oniony. On a side note, it appears they finally figured out the half and half issue and we happily drank our coffee!

Love this place! The baristas are super friendly and were a big help letting us know the specials. I especially love the midcentury modern style interior and the exposed brick wall :) This cafe just gives off a great vibe, where you could just sit in there all day watching the bikers pass by. The coffee is delicious and the sandwiches are amazing. My boyfriend and I like it so much, we ordered another lunch special after already having one each ourselves, LOL. I have no clue why more people weren't in there when we visited. It's a gem waiting to be discovered. Will be back more often!

Delicious little Viennese style open face sandwiches and a lovely space. I have been here twice now and been happy with my food each time. The last time I had tea service which was a nice little set up. I would recommend this place for a relaxed lunch or meeting.

I live within a stone's throw of this place and decided to give it a try (even though I was a little hesitant because I'm not familiar with European sandwiches). The store was empty, definitely open, and I believe it was the owner behind the counter. I walked in and said a friendly hello and barely got a nod from her. I looked at all the little sandwiches in the case and I was curious, but at that point this woman had her back turned and was not acknowledging me so I walked out empty handed. Maybe she was having a bad day? I don't know. It's a shame because I'm always looking for more neighborhood spots to frequent. I give it 2 stars because I do like the look from outside and it seemed clean and well kept inside.

I hosted my sister in law's baby shower on a Saturday afternoon at Duran's, and from start to finish, the whole staff was super accommodating, friendly and set on making it as special and memorable an occasion as possible. Tracy, the owner, was very flexible and happy to work with me to adjust to whatever size we needed and talked through a couple of ideas with me in terms of coming up with a balanced menu all guests would enjoy. When we arrived, Duran's had set up everything exactly as we had discussed, if not better than I expected. We had our own little area reserved, with a table set up with fresh squeezed orange juice (you can bring in your own champagne etc to make mimosas!), big salad, and a nice variety of the absolutely delicious sandwiches. Each guest RAVED about how good the food was. We had our place reserved for roughly 2 hours, and stayed over 3 with no complaints from Duran's and we were perfectly accommodated throughout the entire shower with plates/silverware/refills etc. We were also able to come in early to set up with flowers (although already some there), balloons and gifts that we opened there. I highly recommend Duran's for the food alone - it is so reasonably priced, very fresh, absolutely delicious and satisfying without being overly filling. I also think this is the perfect place to throw any kind of shower - especially if trying to stay within a reasonable budget. Again, I couldn't be more thankful to Tracy and the staff for helping me throw exactly the kind of baby shower I wanted to throw while feeling incredibly welcomed. From my sister in law: "Just wanted to say thank you again for the baby shower! It was such a nice shower and exactly what i would have planned if i'd done it myself! I loved it so so much" Thank you Duran's!

Love the sandwiches and cool spot to hang out. Good desserts too. Had a lunch meeting here that turned into couple hours. Was a nice quiet environment and perfect for discussing business. Definitely try the $10 for 3 sandwiches deal. They're small, so this gives you a chance to try a couple.

I absolutely adore this place. Amazing omelette and free refills on La Colombe Coffee! Jackpot! Also, the service is amazing, the patio is awesome and the most reasonable prices in the city. I love coming here on my days off. Try the breakfast and fresh sandwiches! You won't be disappointed.

So, I strolled into Duran's this morning and was at first taken aback by the pastry selection - for that I would give 4 stars. Then i noticed a lack of beverages - 2 stars. Then I ordered two beignets and a mango smoothie (repackaged beverage) which, in total, cost $9.00. - 1 star. I appreciate French pastries. I spent my junior year in college abroad living in France and I've returned to Paris several times. I love French foods of all sorts...but $5.50 ( w/ tax ) for two donuts .....smh .....

This is my coffee house of choice in River West. It is so convenient to access and parking is always easy. I unwind here and have all my business coffee sessions. The people are friendly, the small bites are delicious and the coffee is wonderful. People are always so friendly as well. This is my little "hide out" spot allows me to support a small neighborhood business.

I love this place. It is a perfect place for a summer lunch. They have an awesome 3 sandwich + a coffee or mineral water for $10 deal and it's great for a light lunch. One weekend we came both Sat and Sun because I couldn't stop craving the sandwiches. I'd say my favorites are: Shrimp Salad Salmon Mozzarella Greek The sandwiches are all little works of art. Seriously beautiful to look at. Service is super friendly and the coffee is good. This place is bigger inside than it looks from the outside and super clean. If they have ran low on any sandwich they offer to make you a fresh one one the spot. Sandwiches are small but three of them make for a perfect lunch that doesn't leave you super full - just the right amount. I love the cream spreads on the sandwiches. So happy to have a place like this!

Awesome, awesome coffee. It's La Colombe, so it's hard to go wrong, okay, but boy do they do it right. It's a proper cafe, with baristas who care about making an espresso drink the way it's meant to be made. I'm so so so delighted to have a great cafe in the neighborhood. I also tried the sandwiches today - very yummy. They are not what you think of when you hear "sandwich," they're little open face savory sandwiches. Three filled me up for lunch. A welcome addition to the neighborhood! You go, West Town!

Went here for some dinner and tea with a few friends and it was a really great place to stop on a lazy afternoon. They have a awesome selection of open faced mini sandwiches and each one not only looks professionally prepared but tastes the part as well. The staff working there was super friendly and helpful in explaining everything they offered and was very accommodating. Personally, I didn't try the tea but my friends did and they seemed to enjoy it very much. It comes with little single serving setup that is both cute and efficient. I went here kinda of hungry and I got the feeling this isn't the place you want to go for a full on meal but it's great for a small snack and visit with a friend or two. That brings me to my next point which is that this place isn't really a large crowd type place. It's set up for just you yourself and a friend or two or three at the most really. Also, try the macaroons! They have a delicious selection.

I threw my sister-in-law's baby shower at this place and it was perfect. The sandwiches are unique and delicious and the presentation was great, especially for a party. (Is it weird that I think sandwiches can look pretty?) There were different packages to choose from and a wide variety of food, pastries, teas and coffee. The descriptions all sounded so good it was hard to choose. My personal fave was the beatnik and picante. The sandwiches are small; so 3/per person was a perfect estimate and the price is very reasonable. Tracy was so wonderful to work with. She so flexible with everything and willing to accommodate my requests. Her staff was very attentive on the day of the shower. We had approximately 20 people. The room was not a private room but it was a section all to ourselves, which basically felt like it was private and there was enough room to open gifts, etc. We were also able to decorate it and it came out looking really nice. Several guests commented how lovely the place was and it was perfect for that kind of party. There's a small parking lot and easy street parking (Sunday), but it's also right off the Blue Line. I would definitely recommend this place, either for a party or a quick bite to eat.

After weeks of biking past Duran waiting for it to open then waiting for the sandwiches to be ready, I finally got to have a taste. I had the $10 "three sandwiches and coffee" deal. For sandwiches, I selected Asparagus, Hummus, and Spanish Salam. My favorite was the Asparagus one. The other ones were alright. Considering that I have a fairly big appetite, I did not think that the three open-faced sandwiches were filling especially given the $10 price. It makes for a good snack-size portion. The coffee wasn't bad either. Attractive decor and friendly service are a plus. However, I wasn't really impressed by either the sandwiches or the coffee. My experience certainly wasn't bad but it was not great either. I still plan on trying some of the other sandwiches though.

Felt right at home right when I walked in the cafe / sandwich shop! The Baristas immediately gave me a warm welcome and intro to their wonderful array of amazing sandwiches. I was made aware of their weekly special of 3 mini sandwiches w/ a cup of coffee for only $10 (tax included)! What a great deal! I had to go for it. The 3 Sandwiches I tried were the Picante Salad, Hummus, and French Ham. All 3 were were absolutely delicious. The ingredients were all fresh and the the ingredients were artfully placed on the sandwich. The coffee was also high quality and served nice and hot. The decor is mid-century/ modern and their choice of furniture w the exposed brick makes for a great ambiance. I usually don't write a review as I am sitting in the establishment, but I like this place so much I had to hop on Yelp and let my fellow yelpers know right away! The place has free too wi-fi which is great. I can see myself coming back here many more times!

This is a unique and cute boutique that serves small open faced sandwiches that can indulge anyone's desires. I bought a three sandwich and a drink special, but at first I thought it wouldn't be filling enough, maybe just enough for lunch. Each sandwich was a new experience for my tastebuds. Most memorable sandwich was a brie sandwich with a slice of tomato and egg: simple, fresh, powerful in taste, but never overwhelming. Desserts are full in flavor. With one of the staff members I was talking to, she told me that they have a few Russian women that make some of their cakes in a traditional way. This is a highly recommended place not only for the great food, but the staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their products. They are willing to make more of certain sandwiches if they run out. I've been to other cafes and restaurants that are unwilling to go above and beyond to show that they care. I find Duran to really put forth effort in their food.

So far, I love it! Glad to have more non-bar options in the area. I had a chocolate croissant and cappuccino. Yum! The staff was very friendly, the decor is relaxed and inviting. (Free wifi is also a plus!)

Delightful sandwich and coffee deal- $10! A cute cafe about a half a block from the Blue Line Grand station. The cafe is truly European- fresh made espresso, cute half sandwiches, ample space to spread out and work (or relax). There is also an outside patio open during the summer months. Skip the chains for your coffee dates and come here!

Super nice people. Amazing european sandwiches, tasty croissants, great coffee! I love coming here and sitting outside on the patio when walking the dog on a summer day.

Finally opening on Thursday, February 7th. I'll be there to try their coffee from La Colombe. The milk is also from a local farm as well. (Update!) I stopped by to pick up a cup of coffee on the way to work. Definitely a nice space with a lot of natural light. Friendly baristas and a good variety of seating options throughout the cafe. The sandwiches will be available soon, but in the meantime you can enjoy some coffee or their large selection of tea.

I have read all the reviews below and what hurts is that people are criticizing the place publicly before they talk to the owner. If your coffee is weak or something is wrong with it, talk to the staff. They will make you another one. This is a local place owned by a local person. We all want these type of places to succeed. I loved this place. I found the staff incredibly welcoming and generous. The coffee I had was excellent. Yes the sandwiches are small but 3 of them is plenty unless you are a football player. I think the prices are incredibly fair for what you get--beautiful sandwiches made with super fresh ingredients in delicious combinations. So please people, try to be helpful to Duran, not hurtful. We want Tracy to succeed and be there for us.

I just had my baby shower here last Sunday. Tracy, the owner, allowed me to customize a menu for my party; caprese salad, gorgonzola salad, asparagus, greek, picante and hummus sandwiches. By far the highlight were the pyramid of macaroons-pistachio, lychee-rose, and mango-passion fruit. We had tables set-up on the right-hand side of the cafe, for food, presents and to dine at. We were allowed to decorate the tables and bring wine. The staff was very helpful and accomodating. The sandwiches were prepared freshly. I highly recommend this spot for casual dining or for private parties. The food, service and ambience were perfect for a baby shower.

A neighborhood gem! Husband and I walked over for a casual lunch on the patio - prices are a little steep, but I will pay for the quality - the sandwiches are so delicate and tasty. The $10 lunch special is the way to go! Staff was super helpful and friendly. We got a great recommendation for the pear cake - delish! Would like to come back and try more.

Underwhelmed. Sandwiches were yummy but I couldn't get over how incredibly long it took for three little sandwiches that aren't even COOKED. It was painfully slow and I think there were four people in there. Also very overpriced for what you get.

Went in to check out the new place in the hood. Free coffee refills if you eat there, almond croissant heated up to warm goodness. Yum. I also got to try a sample of the egg salad sandwich (open faced). Yum. I can't wait to try the rest of the sandwiches once they premier. They will also have a patio when the weather is warm. Looking forward to more visits and trying the Melange (think espresso, a bit of coffee, and milk). Love the Austrian tastes.

Although wikipedia says a sandwich "commonly" has two or more slices of bread, most people say it's not a sandwich without at least two slices of bread. You're not selling sandwiches here and therefore, we always go to Iguana or DeLux because you simply can't eat a real lunch here. Add another slice of bread, reduce the prices and we'll be back. Thanks. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sa…

I have been here twice now for coffee. When I saw they sold La Colombe coffee, I was especially looking forward to trying this place. Unfortunately, my expectations and reality did not meet. While I admittedly came during off-hours (5pm on a Friday and 2:30 PM on a Sunday), both times I found their coffee to be quite stale tasting and weak. It made me wonder if they were trying to cut corners to make their coffee last longer rather than focusing on delivering a quality product. Because I live so close by I really wanted to like this place, but with so many great coffee places in Chicago, it's hard for me to justify continuing to frequent this establishment. On a positive note, the staff was friendly. That is what raise my review from one star to two.

We hosted a baby shower at Duran this past weekend, and it was a great success! Tracy was so easy to work with and very helpful in getting everything ordered and set up for the shower. She and her staff were very attentive while we were there, and all of the guests loved the sandwiches, pastries and coffee. We will definitely be back soon!

If anyone happens to be passing through the River West area during lunchtime, please be sure to give Duran's on Grand and Milwaukee a try. I tried their lunch special today - 3 sandwiches and a coffee for $10, and it was fantastic! For those of us whose eyes are bigger than our stomachs, the seemingly small open-faced European sandwiches are the perfect amount of food to satisfy any hunger. With over 20 varieties of sandwiches, there are plenty of options for meat-eaters, pescatarians, and vegetarians alike. I got French ham, Hungarian salami, and roast beef for my mister, and traditional egg salad (no mayo or mustard), and leek salad for myself. The service was excellent, with my order being promptly filled, the baristas making sure I got exactly what I wanted and serving me with a smile. I will be back!

Looked like a nice place to stop while on my bike, and it was. Everything was fresh and the place is very clean. A little pricey, but I think they put a lot of work into making the sandwiches gourmet like an upscale restaurant.

The people here are incredible and products fantastic. Not only can you get European sandwiches in the same style I was accustomed to and comforted by while living in Budapest, but the pastries are superb and you can wash it down with la colombe's cold pressed coffee. I'm delighted to have them in the neighborhood.

Went here for a friend's baby shower on a Sunday early afternoon! The place is really cute and parking was a breeze at this time of day. They set up a table off to the side with a variety of their little sandwiches and a salad as well. All of the sandwiches I had were quite tasty, especially the one with sliced onion on it and also one that had asparagus on top of it. As I was there for a shower, I really didn't pay too much attention to all that this café offered, but I'd definitely come back with my friend (post baby birthing) and try it again since she lives right down the street. The staff there did seem really helpful and attentive. I really liked the European concept of this café.

This place is fantastic. The sandwiches are equal parts delicious and works of art. I had the Edam cheese, Kabanosy (Polish sausage), and Leek sandwiches. All were delicious and the little veggie salads reminded me of something one of my Polish relatives would make - very authentic and wonderful. I also had two macaroons which were also great. I wish this place were closer to my home, but I'll gladly make the trip for it more often!

This place is delicious! Just like being back in Europe. They have a huge variety of sandwiches so there's something for everyone. I was surprised at how many vegetarian friendly choices they have. The passion tea is a must. They have an awesome lunch special - 3 sandwiches and a coffee or tea for $10. I will definitely go back as often as I can.
