I went in here on Thanksgiving morning because of the great name and its location where I needed to transfer buses between the Lawrence and the Kimball. I strode in confidently and proclaimed with vigor 'I have a prescription here for one cake donut with rainbow sprinkles!' The woman behind the counter looked at me for a moment then asked if I wanted anything else. My donut was only one dollar (US) and was delicious. Looking back on things, the way I acted wasn't warranted at all. I acted as if I was walking into DONUT PHARMACY. I really should have described my ailments in a way that lead to me being given a cake donut with rainbow sprinkles.

I want to let Donut Doctor slide a bit, since it was the late afternoon when we came in search of donuts. And yet the near emptiness of the donut case and the sad, lukewarm, slightly stale Bismarck I had make me wonder if it's really much better early in the morning. The Bismarck does get props for its tangy and flavorful custard and sweet frosting, but overall Donut Doctor is really nothing special. Except for the name, which I love.

In a word...disappointing. Not including the doughnut chain that is most prominently found throughout Chicago this is the closest doughnut shop to our home, but sadly it's not a place I'm eager to return to. We arrived at about 9am on a Saturday morning to find an almost full house of apparent regulars just hanging out - thought that this must be a good sign. Maybe we just arrived at the wrong time, but the doughnut selection was anemic at best - maybe a half dozen types of doughnuts. We opted for the cinnamon twists, chocolate glazed, and plain cake doughnuts. The best of the bunch was the cinnamon twist, but it was just average. The glazed doughnut was doughy and seemed almost under cooked. The cake doughnut suffered the opposite problem - dry and bland We also arrived home to find we were short one doughnut, not sure if we paid for it or not. Not a big deal, but it would've been nice to have that extra cinnamon twist since it was the only one we enjoyed. My best word of advice though is to skip the coffee, it's just plain bad.

The quality of the donuts and the coffee both rank high for me. They serve up a variety of "cake" donut offerings. Cake has always been my favorite of the donut interpretations. The alternative is the "yeast" varietal and it's always left me wanting more. But the donut doctor doesn't waste too much time on anything other than cake, god love 'em. I can attest to the warnings as to the characters who in part patronize the place, but I've never run into any real trouble or danger. Now, what I find to be really, really interesting is that this place not only serves up fantastic donuts, but in it's 900-some-odd square feet, it is the most obvious "back-alley" casino going in the city. I do not know much about the law, but this place will never suffer from a lack of foot traffic, and it ain't the donuts bringing it all in. Any retailer that sells lotto tickets has pressed the right flesh in this city of ours. But the donut doctor seems to only be lacking a license to sell medical-grade marijuana. What they do actually sell aside from outrageously tasty coffee and donuts are the aforementioned lottery games -- scratch offs, quick-picks, little Lotto, Big Game...the works. And they sell cigarettes. And if that isn't high enough on the sin-tax scale, the donut doctor operates three different video-stakes games -- poker, blackjack, roulette -- all digitally enhanced and with real money on the line. Lottery, tobacco and gambling -- all under the same roof. Is this a great city or is this a great city?!

***NOTE***I forgot to buy the apple fritter. Once I do, and try another yeast donut, that'll seal the deal on the rating. Donut Doctor's strong points: -its actually in the City (like, 15 minutes away from me by car) -the cake donuts have a great texture and a soft, moist, thoroughly baked inside -frosting is tasty. A wee bit on the sweeeeeet side, but still good. The downers: -$1 a donut (w/taxes) if buying individually. Not the cheapest. -the yeast donut I had (long john) was dry. Not enjoyable to eat at all. (again, I need to buy a 2nd one to confirm) -the free parking spots in the lot are more akin to the jokes you find in Oak Park's garage off Lake street (read uncomfortable narrow). There is metered parked adjacent, though. The purgatory: -coffee is okay. Maxwell House grade.

Donut Doctor is a tiny coffeeshop with the austere Albany Park barebone interior. You will find old men reading newspapers, women dragging in kids for doughnuts, and lots of foreigners minding their own business. When I was a shorty I would come here to grab a donut after school while people smoked cigarettes inside. These days, there is no smoking allowed here but I wouldn't be surprised if there would be people smoking. This is Albany Park after all, where anything goes at any given time. The only thing lining the walls are winning lottery scratchcards that marks the number of people who have won $1,000 from buying scratchcards. Donut Doctor has been in Albany Park since that strip mall has been alive. The real secret of Donut Doctor is that they sell cigarettes and don't add taxes when you buy. They sell Marlboros of various kinds and you will save yourself a dollar by going to Donut Doctor, well if you smoke anyway. I've quit but I thought I'd let you in on their little secret. The doughnuts are good but I haven't had one in awhile and am due for a trip.

My first donuts from Donut Doctor, I'll admit, were a bummer. I opted for plain cake and cinnamon thinking they'd be good dunked in coffee but found that instead, they made my coffee taste like dirty fry oil. I'm glad I went back for a 2nd chance, I have to say, because it was on my return visit that I discovered the new love of my life- apple fritter. I don't even like apple fritters! Apples in my breakfast? Gross! Truly, I avoid all foods made by nature. But fried in sugary dough, apples snuck into my diet and have become my official Saturday morning food. And the coconut frosted ain't half bad either.

Across the street from the el (Kimball station), coffee, donuts, ice cream in the summer, scratch off lottery tickets all the time. What more could you want? (Bella, Robert remembers that this line was once called the Ravenswood line instead of the Brown line, he wasn't referring to the Ravenswood stop.)

  • B. L.

Donuts and coffee are served here. I suggest you take it to go, because there can be some characters around here at times. Right across from the end of the line for the Brown line(Ravenswood el). The donuts are pretty good, so they wil help get you going as you head toward the train.
