Your basic teenage staff, no fluff here. Usually in and out pretty quickly. Ice cream is always good, the food not so much.

I've never ordered an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen but this past week I decided to give them a try with a cake for Mother's Day after they sent me an email with a picture of a really nice cake just for Mother's Day. I ordered it online on May 5th and they are supposed to call you to get payment. After waiting two days and not getting a call I decided to drive to the store. Someone there, I think it was a shift Mgr, told me they didn't have everything they needed to do all the designs on the cake but otherwise the decoration on top would look just like the picture and it would say Happy Mother's Day. He did give me a 50% discount due to the problem with the decorating he couldn't do. Needless to say, when I picked it up on Mother's Day it did not look like the picture and it did not say Happy Mother's Day; it said "Happi Flower SHop DP Paisley". THat apparently is the design name of the cake. No one even called me about that. I had not choice but to take it since I was having family over for Mother's Day but this totally screwed up the MOther's Day part of having the cake. They apparently are not very good with following instructions or with contacting you if there is a problem so be careful if you are ordering an ice cream cake from this Dairy Queen.

I guess when you think about it, DQ should be good, because it's a franchise. But in addition to the twisted soft serve deliciousness, there is always the element of service. You never want to get your swirl on with a side order of attitude. That is not the case here. We stopped in randomly last Friday and had our two dogs with us. So I ordered a sundae for me and two small bowls of vanilla for them. When I said I only needed one spoon, the guy behind the counter asked if the ice cream was for my dogs. When I said yes he offered to toss out the ones I had and give me a serving in a larger bowl. I thought that was very cool. And while I declined the offer this time, I will definitely remember that for next time. We will be back as it's always service that keeps you coming back.

I've never had a bad experience at DQ...except for this one, in which I always have a bad experience. If only it was the manager that was rude and nasty, I'd be OK (white guy, balding super rude, customer is always wrong, hates his life probably, etc...) (African american manager with dreadlocks is possibly the nicest person I've ever met at a DQ try and go when she's there!) I order the same thing, every single time, I'm very predictable that way. I'd say 1/2 the time the order is wrong (I order a blizzard with twist ice cream and I watch them either soft serve vanilla OR chocolate, very rarely twist). When I do ask them to correct it, I not only get told that I ordered it wrong and that its my fault, but that they check their system to 'Make sure' I deserve a remake, my order is correct in their system...makes me scratch my head a bit.... If there is a DQ that is barely further away than this one -- go there, unfortunately this one is walkable for me so I'm stuck with it...but when I go with a group we ALWAYS go out of our way to go to a different one, we don't like the rude staff.

They have the best formula I swear! The ice cream re-frost itself after every lick. TRY IT! :D

Dude, it's Dairy Queen. Obviously the ice cream is rad, and the cones as well as the toppings always make for a good treat. So a review on a Dairy Queen really comes down to the experience of coming in, as well as how you're treated during your visit. So the exterior is super cool, it looks like a Classic-American diner, with pinstripe neon and a big "DQ" sign look'n straight from the 20's. Kinda makes you feel better about going to a Dairy Queen in the first place... There is small, but still appreciated, parking lot, and available temporary street parking. The interior is pretty neat too, it's full of old Chicago pictures, James Dean photos, and old news paper clippings on the wall. It makes for something to look at while you wait in line or for your ice cream to be made. Staff was generally nice. A good little visit! Look at you DQ.

Seriously, I can't believe I am writing a review on a fast food venue but all I have to say is that this place is the bomb.com ! You can't go wrong with a DQ Blizzard or their chicken fingers meal. These remind me of my childhood. PS. Random but I was just at a trivia night and learned that Dairy Queen Branding mascot was the cartoon character Dennis the Menace for over 20 years!

This place is always a zoo. I love DQ ice cream especially blizzards (YUM!!). I live close but on warm/hot days, the line is out the door which is a little annoying. The staff is always nice and once you order your ice cream/food, it doesn't take that long. There is not a ton of seating inside the restaurant.

  • Carmen M.

Blizzards are awesome! Staff is not friendly but I kind of understand because they have to deal with a million kids with ice cream dripping all over the floor. Food wise they only sell hot dogs...not cool!! The chicken tender basket is the best! I don't know why they don't expand the menu a bit. The place is so popular and everyone would love it.

You are missing a great opportunity to increase sales while benefitting our nation's health. I am a practicing internist and have been advocating low carbohydrate life style for several years. You may or may not be aware that Sweden has recently changed their national dietary policy to low carb, high fat, and protein. Breyers has been marketing thei "Carb Smart" ice cream for some time and others are following. If you are wise you will do the same. You might gather from the recent Time Magazine cover story and other articles that the word is finely getting out and will only gather empitus because that is where the best science is leading us.

So my gf LOVES Dairy Queen. LOVES IT. When we get a blizzard, she likes to get the chocolate extreme blizzard, but instead of brownie bits, she asks for them to use pieces of M&Ms. No biggie. We've been to lots of DQs across a few states, and they always go "Sure, no prob, whatevs." Without fail. Then we roll on up to this one and ask for the same. The guy behind the counter looks real exasperated for a moment, then says he can do it. After ringing us up, the guy continues to say that "He's doing us a favor" by letting this slide because she should charge us for a second blizzard in order to make this work and that "a chocolate extreme blizzard is a chocolate extreme blizzard. Nothing else." and that "This won't happen again." Really? Okay guy, sorry, I mean Lord of All Blizzards. Calm down. I've worked at a DQ before. Nobody gives a shit about the extras in a blizzard. Nobody. But staff aside from him is usually nice.

The service here is fantastic. The people were so friendly and sweet, and the poor girl said it was her first day on a day that the line was still out the door 10 minutes away from close. I understand that the weather has been unseasonably warm in Chicago this year, and I know that March is the month of buy one get one for $0.99 blizzards, and we came at the end of the day...but how can you be out of your featured blizzards ingredients?? ALL my roommate and I were looking forward to that entire day was a mint Oreo blizzard and a Reeses blizzard, both of which we were unable to order. I settled with a turtle blizzard, which turned out to not at all be like what I wanted it to be. Very disappointing. I can't be too mad though, because the workers kept their heads up, worked HARD to get treats to guests ASAP, and did it all with a smile and a fantastic attitude.

i love Blizzards but this location has let me down twice this season. They've been out of pretty much ever topping both times I've been there. Someone needs to start paying attention to detail and ordering properly. I'll always love some DQ Soft Serve but probably will not come here anytime soon.

I don't have much to say about the food because it's just standard Dairy Queen but service really makes a difference when there are multiple places in walking distance to get a sweet treat. After placing an order for the new item "blizzard waffle cone," I was told there were no cones (really? No cones at the start of summer during a Cubs game?) so I asked the cashier to use a waffle bowl instead. Shortly after that the manager began to berate the cashier in front of many customers for "making something not on the menu." When we confronted him about his behavior he snarkily told us to "call corporate then!" We did :) People who go to Dairy Queen want you to shut up, smile and give them ice cream. The end. ***Looks like the review right below me had the same issue! Maybe you can't substitute items, that's fine, but maybe you shouldn't be jerks about it.

First I'll start off by saying I used to be an ast. manager at a dairy queen throughout college in IN, I loved it, I loved working there, making new confections, and overall enjoyed the business model of DQ. I now have since graduated college and have a profession in healthcare, which in fact is a lot like customer service, so I still feel like a lot of my professionalism and customer service skills that I have learned I got from working at DQ so I have a lot of respect for the company and I crave their products every couple months or so. About a year and a half ago I went to this location for my normal blizzard (oreo with caramel), when I got home the blizzard was sour. From time to time in the winter months business is slower and the product isn't being pushed through the tubes as much and it sits there and this can happen, and I know because like I said I used to work at a DQ. I called this location and the manager (who was the only one working because of the winter time) was very friendly and he went and tasted the soft serve and was like "oh my gosh you are right I am so sorry" blah blah blah, the point is he was very nice and took my name/number/order/email and said "come in any time and we will replace the faulty product" and I went on my merry way because I felt the situation was handled well and once again as a previous manager these types of things happen and you have to deal with them accordingly. Now today I stroll up to the cashier and she pushes the newest promotion trying to upsell a product, which I adorably smiled at because I remember those days of promotion promotion promotion! I explained to her my story and she was very lovely and went and retrieved the manager, I stepped aside and waited for about 1 minute. A lady comes up to the counter wearing the same color shirt as everyone else, has a name tag that read GERISE, and was staring into the line which had about 10-12 people in (this is summer and people want DQ's products), she then turns her head towards me and half smiles at me. After about 10 seconds with no introduction on her end I ask "are you the manager?" to which she replies "yes". As someone who grew up working in customer service jobs (dairy queen, sandwich shops, server, bartender) this was the first red flag - poor eye contact, no introduction to someone who is clearly standing to the side, and no eagerness to help or solve a problem by asking "can I help you?" or "did you have a question for me?". After I explained my story she said "this dairy queen location is under new management for about a year now and we have no record of what you are claiming, therefore I cannot give away free product to you sir". After about a minute of me re-explaining what happened and how I used to be a manager and we kept records of faulty product in a book for years I asked if she could look in the back or call another manager to see if such a book exists to which she replied "you should have come back that day or within a couple weeks if you wanted to get your ice cream" 2nd red flag. The conversation then turned sour as I was not a happy customer and asked for the general managers name to which she replied "give me your name and number and I will pass it along" I then asked for the owner's name and phone number to which she completely ignored, I then asked about policy and for the manager's name/phone number again and she repeated her same statement about 3x (which was infuriating and demeaning). I was shocked that this was happening to me at this moment because of how I helped run another DQ location and never in my almost 4 years of working there did I ever see or hear of ANY DQ manager in the area treating a customer like that. As I was leaving with my heart racing I asked for her name and she turned around quickly and walked into the back area - luckily I had been staring at her name tag the whole time because after the first red flag I knew this was not going to end with me walking away with my favorite blizzard that I ordered almost 1.5 years ago and still have yet to get what I paid for and never received. Her name was GERISE and she was possibly one of the most unfriendly managers I have come across or heard of in the food service industry. I will not be going back to that location or any other Dairy Queen and that truly saddens me...

Okay, so I believe that this is one of the only Dairy Queen stores left in Chicago. Having said that I was disappointed that they only offer the ice cream side of dairy queen. Friendly staff it was also nice to take advantage of the promotion they had going on buy 1 and get one for $0.99. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to find a reasonable sweet treat. Great outdoor patio!

**HEALTH/SANITATION ATTENTION: So I dont yelp, I dont write reviews, its just not my thing. But I have to share this experience. I have been going to this DQ for YEARS. When I was younger my family would meet here after school every friday for blizzards. This place was part of my late childhood years. I have never had a bad experience other than for lack of a better phrase cashiers that were just "over it" on the register. Normal, expected, with the amount of kids running in and out of there, id be over it by the end of the day as well. So on to my last expierence.. Wednesday August 21st at 8pm, my company was having a work meeting (we work down southport) and every meeting we tend too do an order of food or drinks for the meeting from a local business. This time the manager decided ice cream. So the manager of my company with some help walked over and ordered i believe about 18 mini blizzards. Understanding that was a little time consuming, she offered that if the request was too big for the time, she would go else where, and next time call in an order in advance. Not being busy, the reluctant manager with a snakry attitude shouted across the room "YEAH WE'LL DO IT BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE CALLED IT IN". My manager, being in the service industry, felt pretty bad and was made felt like an inconvenience. So the blizzards were made, and then carried them back to the meeting. Realizing they were over charged for a few blizzards unknowingly, she looked passed it for the sake of hassle. So everyone at the meeting has their blizzard, and there are a few, maybe 4-5 extras that we threw in the freezer. Untouched, unopened, and still in the cup tray. The next afternoon I decide I would like to polish off an oreo mini blizzard, so i go to the freezer and grab one from the tray, put it in the microwave for a few seconds to defrost it, and i take it out. Sit down, and start to mix around this blizzard. And what i found at the BOTTOM of the untouched ice cream was a CIGARETTE BUTT. BURNT. SMOKED. IN THE BOTTOM OF THE CUP. There is no possible way that any of us accidently dropped it in there. The people carrying the blizzards would have no way of even holding a cigarette while holding 18 blizzards. And for it to be at the very bottom of the cup, this was intentional. I called the DQ immediately to speak with the manager only for him to tell me that they didnt do anything wrong and it just "wasnt possible" and that he would replace the tampered blizzard.. I called corporate and filed a complaint. I dont want anything in return for this blizzard, but I want punishment upon those making them. If i were to have given that ice cream to a kid or something (which we do hand out popsicles), I would be taking this way further. Currently awaiting a response from corporate. Never going there again. Thanks for reading. Please be careful.

History of the Blizzard--1985 "I put Oreos in ice cream and it ain't half bad?" High school employee "But that's crazy...you can't do that. It doesn't even have a name!" Franchise owner "We will call it a Blizzard..." HS kid "Ok I'll bring that up at the next meeting with corporate and make sure I get the credit and retire twenty years early, and you can have a nickel an hour raise..." Franchise owner ...the rest is history except now they put more crap in blizzards. i like this location despite hating mass produced fast food joints

Folks, it's a Dairy Queen!!! Some of you are posting on here like you were going to Hot Chocolate or the Doughnut Vault. Yesterday I said to my partner, what can we do on a hot summer afternoon that won't cost us an arm and a leg. Voila! Dairy queen ice cream. We walked over and, even though there was a street festival going on, we didn't have to wait too long for our ice cream cones. If you've ever sat there during the day, you will see just how much business this Dairy Queen does, so, if you go there at the end of the night, and they are out of things, well, that's understandable. It's a busy place! Surprise, you are not their only customer. It's disappointing but they do have other things there. Also, the service was fast and friendly; they moved the line through quickly without feeling like you were getting the bum's rush. I just wish I lived closer.

Dairy Queen is on the short list of chain food establishments in the city I will visit. When I'm in the 'burbs, it's an entirely different story, but in the city there is just usually not a reason. But I can't deny it. I love me some DQ. And I love it even more when it is 50 yards from my home. This DQ can get pretty busy in the summer, but don't let that line out the door scare you off bcs it will move quickly. I've never waited more than 10-15 minutes on the hottest of days. Most recently I tried the peanut butter sundae - fudge and peanut butter. Hot damn (or should it be cold damn?) it was spectacular. I know DQ isn't real ice cream, and frankly I'm not sure I want to know exactly what it is. All I know is that it hits the spot and that soft serve stuff is lower fat. 'nuff said.

It's DQ. It's cheap. It's in the city. I can sit on the corner in the summer and eat ice cream. Bliss.

This DQ makes blizzard dreams come true. I love the $1 ice cream sundae on Mc D's, but sometimes, the urge hits you and you need that blizzard and you will do anything for it. Everything at this DQ is pretty great. Lots of seating, good staff, and usually clean. Hours change for winter which is frustrating. This is Chicago ..I can handle the winter! GIVE ME MY DQ! I do gripe about the prices. Over $4 for a SMALL blizzard is tough to swallow. I try to only go once or twice a month, and I am loyal to the BOTM, better known as the Blizzard of the Month. DQ conjures the happiest of childhood memories, even if it is just soft serve vanilla ice cream. Like Portillo's, DQ is a family-time staple. I couldn't believe that they had such a cute country-style DQ at this spot on Southport. You will almost feel like you're in a tiny town in Northern Minnesota. (except for the super long line) Though I've mentioned my out-of-control fro-yo obsession, the Oreo Blizzard will never get old for me. Since I was about 7 years old, I have been saying "Next time I'll try something new" But then next time rolls along, and I have to get the oreo blizzard. Maybe it's my OCD, maybe it's the Oreo, but it's most likely the perfect combination of Oreo and Softserve. They were made for each other. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Remember when they had Peanuts characters on the cups? Oh man, I'd love to go back to that time when the family would finish up dinner on a steamy august night, and we'd quietly peer in to my dad's eyes, imagining the DQ logo. "Dairy Queen tonight? pleeeez?" Our begging looks would say. "Let's take a trip to Dairy Queen" he would magically read our minds. That's what I think of whenever I go to this DQ, and I can't wait for summer!

One of (2) locations in all of Chicago. Nothing special; sometimes seems understaffed, so don't go there during "peak hours," whenever those are. FREE parking, but only 8 spaces or so. If it's busy *and* the lot is full, you might end up paying for parking on Southport. If it's NOT busy, and the lot is full, you can get by throwing your flashers on in the alley or on the street somewhere (+Bonus points if you've got an extra body to watch your car)

What's not to love about DQ? As the creepy mouth says on all their commercials, they have the best of both worlds: hot eats and cool treats. The real reason I love DQ is because it reminds me of my childhood. No matter how old I get, every time I take a spoonful of a blizzard I feel like I'm whisked away to being 7 years old wearing a tie-dyed sundress just coming from running through the sprinkler in my backyard. When this first opened, it was the only DQ in the northside of the city and all the yuppies said a large and communal "Hooray!!" Now we have another place to go after our dinner dates or when we just want some comfort-food dessert. If you live anywhere near here, it's the perfect place to walk to in the summertime, plus you feel a little less guilty if you are walking to and fro. My favorite will always be a butterfinger blizzard...there are no imperfections to be found in that treat.

I love Dairy Queen. I love the vanilla ice cream in a cone, with the chocolate dip. I love the simplicity of the dipped cone. I think a small cone costs only $1.99 (and it's really not that small) and that's a real bargain. DQ also makes me think of road trips because there always seems to be one along the highway, right when you need it. The only thing about this particular location is that they often have the most clueless nutbags milling around. And the place sometimes smells of beer sweat. But that's not DQ's fault. So I love it.

    (4)
  • Jamie M.

I have been to this location several times. It is always clean and service is fast and Friendly. I mean who can complain about ice cream. Anything I order is always just wonderful. I love the little parking lot in the back and the picnic tables outside for the summer. I do have a suggestion, I think that you should make individual ice cream cakes. I have been to other locations in other states and they do this. They are in a sundae container and it is called a cup cake. I love the ice cream cake and don't want to buy a whole one just for me. If you did this I would be there more often.

OMG - who hires these people? If they showed any more interest in their job they'd have a pulse. Yes. That is why they are getting low marks. If there were another DQ anywhere near my home, I'd go there instead. The options and choices are great as DQ always has. The decor is fun and seating is plenty. The store has always been clean. The staff, though, seems like they'd rather be on the other side of the counter. Management needs to fix that...

I don't think this is much different from any other Dairy Queen in the country, but we appreciate it for its mere existence on Southport. I come from a much smaller non-suburban town, and Dairy Queen was something we took for granted, an easy five-minute drive. Now, the reality of cheap, yet quality ice cream is just a short twenty-minute walk away from my very humble abode. It's a slice of Midwestern Americana. I'm going back for thirds.

I have a new Dairy Queen. One of the uncountable ways I adore my Daughter No. 2 beyond words is her zest for simple pleasure. I called her last night to wish her Happy night-before-her-17th Birthday, and asked where she would like to have her birthday dinner. "Dairy Queen." "Haha. No, really honey, where should we all meet?" "Really, Dad. Can we meet at Dairy Queen, please? C'mon. We haven't been there in soooooo long." Done deal. The sun poured in as we arrived. It was quiet and almost empty. We had chili cheese dogs, plain hot dogs, chips, cokes, a banana split and some other chocolatey peanutty concoction for dessert. "Daddy, thank you sooooo much. This was exactly what I wanted." We hugged and kissed, and she went on her way to meet friends. Then I remembered: this is the same kid who when asked why she insisted she wanted nothing for Hannukah, replied: "because when I do ask for stuff you always say yes, anyway." My Dairy Queen.

Just like the Dairy Queen that I grew up with, just in an urban location. Talk about making the most of an urban footprint! This location has parking, an outdoor patio, a front area with stools & what appears to be a party room in back. My kids & I will be having many cherished moments here.

I am a huge fan of ice cream and I have had every gourmet scoop from here to San Francisco and back but sometimes you just need some soft serve and there is a decided void on the north side of Chicago for this ole' time favorite but this DQ fits the bill every time I need an ice cream blast from the past! Yesterday I went with a couple friends to this fine purveyor of semi-liquid frozen treats... This being my first DQ stop in the 2009 calender year I was super excited! This was our first day that we broke 80 degrees so I expected a line and maybe some service hiccups, there was a line indeed but it moved fast and the happy and iced-treat savy staff moved with a quickness! I kicked off the occasion with a medium twist cone dipped in butterscotch, It was divine I was immediately thrust back 20 plus years ago to the DQ just steps form my home that my mother and I would frequent during the summers long before the explosion of gourmet ice-cream-at least in little Royal Oak Michigan... The butter scotch dipped creamy goodness was so good I had to jump back into line for another old favorite... I ordered a freeze (not even on the menu anymore, but the stellar staff knew exactly what I was craving and made it sooooo perfect) It was a grape freeze which is the grape slush infused with vanilla ice cream... Neither of my friends had indulged in such a treat before, they were so shocked by its creamy goodness I had to visit the line a third time and bring a cherry freeze back to the frozen treat troff we had formed in the corner of the dining room... If DQ is your destination then this DQ should be the one! Woohoo!

Still love it even though portions are half of what you get at a suburban DQ - probably better for me anyways =P Just an fyi - came here Monday to take in some sun and sat outside on the picnic table - for those that have kids, be careful. The paint on the picnic table chips easily. I had my arm on the table and when I lifted it, there were a half dozen paint chips stuck to me. Could definitely be a potential hazard.

It's DQ. The night we went over a year ago- I think marijuana fumes were being pumped in. But it's DQ, as I said, we never got what we ordered, only a refund after we questioned where our order was. I have kids, and ordering here felt like trying to get them to clean their room. But like I said, it's DQ and we went only for old times sake, for that alone I gave this place four stars. I felt 17 again, not really caring what I ordered but psyched I was out on a date. Yeah, my husband is hawt.

There is nothing better. The taste of a Chocolate dipped cone brings me back to the summers of my childhood, when my parents used to take me to dairy queen as a special treat! Dipped cones, blizzards, chili dogs, dilly bars, Mr. Mistys, I love them all!

  • Heather E.

Although I've never ordered food here (their lack of a grill plays a part in it), the ice cream is GREAT! Blizzards taste exactly like the ones you've had at any other Dairy Queen. They have been flexible with my interesting mix-in combinations (peanut butter oreo) and have always gotten it right. The seating is nice, and they have a back patio and sidewalk seating. I subtracted one star for the wait that I often find. They seem understaffed at times, and the workers making the ice cream sometimes look as though they're not quite sure what they should be doing. Definitely not great multi-taskers. One thing I appreciate about this DQ is that I know they do some charity work with the neighborhood, particularly Blaine School.

sure, there are a million other delicious ice cream joints in this fine city of ours, but some days, you just want a chocolate dipped cone from DQ. and on those days, this DQ rocks my socks. the location is great, i love the old-school music that is always playing, and they have two outdoor patios on which to enjoy your hot eats or cool treats. i worked at a DQ back in the day that can't hold a candle to this one... and, coming from a former professional ice cream curly-q maker, they do one heck of a job on their cones. keep it up.

I JUST GAVE WARREN BUFFETT $5 Seriously, when did DQ get so expensive? I paid almost $5 for a small Oreo blizzard. Maybe it's inflation or maybe that's why Warren Buffett is one of the richest people in the world. Either way, for that kind of coin I'd much rather go to Scooter's Frozen Custard for a real dessert. (Sidebar: WTF is up with their parking lot? It's so screwed up the DMV should use it as part of their road test...escape successfully and get your license.)

I recently discovered Drew's Eatery on Lincoln and Montrose... Coffee, Meat and Ice cream? And it's tasty? See ya DQ with your surly, pimply teenage service, melting blizzards (all stingy with the mixers), and flavorless soft serve! It IS you and absolutely not me... I'm upgrading just like Beyonce said, and leaving you! Stop sobbing... It's emarrassing. I'm feeling twinges of... sadism. Yes, I will bring you contraband caramel from Drew's. Heh Heh. You wish.

Seriously, I could DQ something different every damn day. This location is great, though on warm nights and game days, the line can snake around the block. Even then, the people in line are all ice cream maniacs and you can chat longingly about the blizzard you're about to annihilate when you finally get your hands on it. I won't lie - I have absolutely zero interest in eating any of their 'food' as DQ for me is all about the ice cream. Lately, all the workers are wearing blue "Blizzard Tech" shirts, which upon first and quick glance look like they say "Blizzard Bitch" - if they actually DID say "Blizzard Bitch" I'd give the joint 6 stars. NOTE: now that Coldstone on Halsted and Cornelia is closed, it's just as fun to watch all the closet ice-cream gays show up at this DQ to shame eat their ice cream in peace, only to find out everyone else is doing the same thing.

Their cotton candy blizzard is delicious. Get it while they still have it! Like always, Dairy Queen's ice cream is great, but... The employees at this particular location are really rude. That's why I'm giving it 1 star instead of 4. Let me explain that I'm hard-of-hearing and I have a slight accent. Most people can understand me speak, but there's always a few people out there who cannot understand anything except plain ol' English. The kid at the counter is one of these people. When he realized I was a "foreigner", he instantly gave me sour treatment. He stopped making eye contact and he began speaking to me in a rude condescending tone. Whatever, I get that treatment sometimes.... But what broke the camel's back was the girl who made my blizzard. She was a typical gum-chewing, hair twirling "like, totally" teenager. She gave me an exaggerated "whateva" look when I asked her for a couple of caps for my cups. When I thanked her, she gave me an extremely fake smile and kind of rolled her eyes. Even though I like their ice cream, I don't think I want to go back there.

Every year I get my birthday cake from this location. We joke they must film commercials at this location because it is so clean and the people are so friendly.

Big, giant props for knowing the ingredients of the original blizzard concoction (I have no proof that the chocolate coating, peanuts and bananas in vanilla i.c. is the original, but my father told me so and I am sticking my guns). This Dairy Queen, while strategically placed in the middle of Chicago hood turn generi-trendy, somehow stands alone and does a decent job of it. The physical layout is appealing, the young staff and cheerful w/out being pretentious, and they even gave me free liquid chocolate on the side. I ordered a medium and couldn't finish it -- I'm getting old.

What's not to love? Great ice cream, and quick service make this an awesome stop on any warm day; especially great to walk to after a Cub win! The only reason they lose a star from me, is that I honestly don't believe I've ever seen anyone over the age of 18 working there... Ever... And I've been here a lot, just ask my waistline. So, that occasionally leads to some confusion due to an occasional lack of leadership behind the counter, but hey, this has rarely presented itself as a real problem. Go, eat, love... It's quite tasty.

It's always good to have a DQ in the hood. Love having this one around; I'd love it even more if I didn't get fake whipped "topping" on my banana split. You're a Dairy Queen, guys--stay true to the name!

twist ice cream in a cup with sprinkle is really not that much to ask for. Messed that up 4 times in a row. I like ice cream it's my weakness so therefore you can't get it right Dairy Queen, I will take my business to Scooters!!!!

Yet another place for sweets on Southport... It's a pretty small Dairy Queen. There's one TV playing old black and white cartoons to give off the old style diner effect but it's located in a spot that isn't near any tables which makes it pointless. As for the food, it's Dairy Queen. You'd do best to just get desert from here but unfortunately you probably already passed three better places on the way here.

This place knows good ice cream but the service sometime tests your patience. The teenagers behind the counter are being teens..some rolling their eye, little eye contact and many sighs...but really how many people do you know had to get their first job at a place like this. :) Just go! Very one could use a little DQ in their day.

Before I moved in down the road 6 weeks ago I had never eaten Dairy Queen (I'm a transplant to the city from London). In the last 6 weeks I have been 4 times, its turning into a rather enjoyable Sunday evening habit. Have tried a couple of different Blizzards and Sundaes and they were all fab which is the reason for the 4 star review. However if I had to go based on service they would manage 1, maybe 2 on a good day. In my 4 visits they have messed up my order twice. I'll keep going as I'm an ice cream fan, seriously I know I have an accent but how can you misunderstand - "May I have a small Kit Kat Blizzard please?!"

  • Arlene A.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice-cream! Unlike it's richer counterpart, custard, ice cream provides the creamy dreamy without feeling boggy. Whilst my honey had his usual Reese's blizzard, I had the Hawaiian. Yummy stuff. Yeah it's not exotic or fussy and they play the Disney channel all the time, but shouldn't some things be simple?

A Parking lot...yes it is really on Southport! Great Customer Service. Large seating area, even a few tables outside when it is warm out. Immaculately clean. Totally supportive of the neighborhood school. AND Ice Cream! All equal a great place to me! I have been in this Dairy Queen after warm school days and it seems like my daughters whole class is there. This DQ is so nice to the kids during the day and the cherry dip cones rock!

Bam.... you can never go wrong with DQ! Great place to hit up anytime. Enjoy! Note: If you're heading to a party and in need of a cake, hit DQ up. They have ice cream cakes ready for u! Plus, they can add any decorations to it for you. Perhaps a Go Bears!

Screw the owner Tom. He is a perv who hits on every female employee. He is a lying cheat and has failed health inspection numerous times. The employees there are little shits.

I actually haven't been to this location, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate that it's there. Someone told me that this menu does not include all of the usual food options which I can't even imagine... No chicken strip basket with the fries, gravy, and the perfect piece of white toast? What the?! Here's the deal though... I love it, but I actually can't go anywhere near it. The milkshake alone is 22 points on the Weight Watchers scale. That's a little scary when my daily point limit is supposed to be 19 points total... Someday I'll fast and save all of my points for half of a peanut butter cup blizzard. And I can't wait...

Why is it so hard to get soft-serve in this town? Anyway...this is one of the few chains I heartily endorse. I'm not sure why they decided to open their only (?) city location in Chicago's Heart o' Darkness - the loathsome Southport neighborhood, but at least we have one at all.

    (5)
  • Brent W.

They bring the goods w regard to soft serve ice cream, blizzards, etc, we all know that. However, if you want a dog that's *not* a chicago-style, (c'mon, it does happen from time to time) then I implore you to try their chili cheese dog. Best version in town and edges out Gold Coast Dogs by a small margin.

  • Jason Z.

It's Dairy Queen. It's good. It's the same in Chicago as the one you grew up by. It's Dairy Queen. Is it the best ice cream in the city? No. Is it the worst? No.

  • Lesley G.

I love me some DQ. This place could have five stars if it served chicken strip baskets or stayed open later, but it's still great ice cream. Plus this particular one is always clean and the staff are pretty friendly and quick. I love getting a vanilla or twist cone with the chocolate dip that hardens, man that stuff is good!

OMFG...Girl Scout Thin Mint Blizzard....Shut Up. This is one of the best things in the world. I know! Freakin' awesome.

Oh how I love thee! Dairy Queen on SouthPort. Yummy Yummy. The best time to go to DQ is before 5pm when everyone gets home from work, or before noon on the weekends. The lines get really long, but for this ice cream eater-it's well worth it. DQ has all the flavors that I remember from a kid. Hooray for DQ.

  • Jennifer K.

It was my first time trying DQ, and I must say that I was impressed. The mint chocolate chip milk shake was delicious. I also liked their variations on the classic ice cream cone dipped in chocolate. The price is decent as well. I only drop by when I want dessert after a wonderful meal at Tango Sur. It isn't so electrifying that I must drive all the way out for a bit of DQ.

Chocolate Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in a Chocolate Ice Cream Blizzard. Excuse me while I go wipe off the drool... You might have to squeeze your way past a bunch of strollers and lazy bums who don't understand the meaning of a line, but it's COMPLETELY WORTH IT. DQ rocks my world.

  • Sara B.

i'm really just writing this review to convey my extreme happiness at a dq in the city. HURRAY! it's exactly what you'd expect, except way more people than your local small town dq. but, it's totally worth it to slurp down a blizzard on a hot summer night. if only they still had frozen yogurt.

    (5)
  • Laura I.

Used to live down the block from here and man, there was no better place to go at 10PM at night for a chocolate dipped cone. The sucky part was there was always a line (even at 10PM at night) during the summer. It's worth the little wait.

    (3)
  • Erin B.

One of my favorite spots to walk to to get ice cream in the summer. The lines are super long, but hey, it's DQ's ice cream!! I always get the vanilla cone, dipped in chocolate--YUM! Oh, also, if you're lucky, you'll see Ronnie Woo Woo chillin inside eatin a cone!

    (4)
  • Victoria O.

So its in the city and it has parking, but it does not have French Fries or Strawberry Shortcakes. During the summer the line at this classic ice cream spot is usually out the door and around the corner but it moves fairly quickly. They do serve some food; BBQ pork sandwiches and hot dogs, but I would not recommend eating it. I love that it is conveniently located but I am picky when it comes to...well everything, so it is not my first choice but it is decent and familiar.

  • Robyn M.

Good 'Ol Dairy Queen. Sometimes you just want a good No Fuss Vanilla cone. But really people, you stand in line here like there is no other ice-cream around (my count is 4 within eight blocks). Is it the nostalgia? the smooth creamy vanilla or the Only at Dairy Queen Mystery crunch topping (what is it anyway??) Yes it is good - could be cleaner but it is a good hot day destination.

  • B. L.

Some DQ's these days look like they are run down and are dirty , not this one. This is a very clean and good looking store. They may not have the best ice cream in the world, but every once in a while a soft cone hits the spot.

    (4)
  • Therron R.

I am truely baffled how a chain store can be so amazing that the line would come out the door and around the corner. We didn't wait last night but maybe we'll come back.

  • Angela S.

As far as DQs go, this one is at the top! Fun, clean atmosphere, good ice cold treats! My Heath blizzard was almost more Heath than ice cream. When the guy behind the counter did make a mistake with my order it was like bizzarro-mistake- I got a medium instead of a small. I just wish it were a tiny bit closer to walk to, 'cause I can never find parking there!

    (5)
  • Wrigley F.

I wish I could rate the food and the service seperately. The food is 4-5 stars. I agree with the other comments - I love getting softserv. The menu is simple but classic. The service, though, UGH. i realize we're talking $2-$3 ice cream here - but it takes FOREVER. the kids that are working there have absolutely no work ethic or manners. They seem more interested in chatting than serving their customers. They go through managers like its going out of style because of the kids that work there.

  • Mindy S.

I'm so excited there is finally a Dairy Queen close to me in the city! This place is so cute. The decor and music create the perfect atmosphere! I can see it being very crowded and long lines in the summer, but dairy queen is always worth the wait. I mean, does anything beat a peanut butter cup blizzard? I can already sense I'll be making a few trips there once the weather gets warm. See you there!

    (5)
  • Emily N.

Coldstone is probably my favorite ice cream place, BUT nothing beats dairy queen blizzards. I love the brownie bite blizzard, and the oreo and mint chocolate chip blizzards. I love them.

    (5)
  • Audra S.

Are you kidding me? It's Dairy Queen, for God's sake. At any rate, I wouldn't review something as well known as DQ, but this location is NOT published anywhere -- not phone books, not on the Internet, nowhere. Not to mention that soft serve ice cream is kind of hard to get your hands on in my neck of the woods. So, it's good to know that you can meander a little northwest to get some good, familiar ice cream. Just talking about it makes me want a blizzard!

    (5)
  • Oscar the Death Cat B.

Strange to see that a simple, old-fashioned franchise like Dairy Queen has decided to open an outlet on yupscale Southport Av., but I'm not complaining, I much prefer their Blizzard treats over the ice cream offerings of nearby Cold Stone. They also serve a few non-ice cream dishes such as hot dogs and BBQ beef, but don't get too excited about those, they tend to be smallish & not a great value for the price - it appears that this store is not equipped to offer a lot of the grill items that other Dairy Queens serve.

    (3)
  • Liza O.

DQ is DQ, nothing extra special about this one. Except everytime I've been I've been impressed by the speed of service. Getting my blizzard fast makes me happy! So kudos to the guys behind the counter. The line can get long after cubs games, but if you live in Lakeview you know that can be said about anything.

    (4)
  • Bethany K.

Everyone loves Dairy Queen, and this is like a little bit of home for all the suburbian kids transplanted into the big city. The wait can get long, but it's worth it. Try the peanut butter sundae. Fantastic!
