The ice cream here is absolutely amazing !! I had to sample at least 2-3 flavors before I could make a decision. All of flavors are testy , different, creative .... YUMM

Perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day. Love the freshly made gelatos, also very reasonably priced! everybody is sure to find their favorite and mine was the Cassata, brought back childhood memories.

We biked here on a sunny day and enjoyed this little gem. I think it's underrated! Tell everyone! The flavors are amazing! Very creative. Malted vanilla, rosemary Irish cream, goat cheese cashew caramel, chocolate caramel peanut butter cup, cabernet, peach tea sorbet, etc. They rotate flavors. They have cones too. This spot is also adorable inside. Very colorful with indoor seating. No outdoor seating!

Sadly, they were out of the goat cheese cashew caramel gelato I wanted to try when I visited. However, the salted peanut and Nutella pretzel gelato were delightful. Black Dog was not the best gelato I have ever had but it was still very good. If I didn't live out of town, I would be a regular!

Love this place! Intimate neighborhood gelato place! Every trip is different and a mini-adventure, with the "artisanal gelato hand crafted in small batches made fresh daily" being rotated constantly. Sesame Fig Chocolate Chip; perfect! Merlot Raspberry; outstanding! Cappuccino; loved it! Glad to know people are still willing to take risks with their product and not simply provide cookie-cutter experiences!

An excellent gelato place. All you fro-yo fans can go take a hike. First of all the staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Second, all you really need is a kids cup (one scoop) for $2.50. Which is an excellent price for premium gelato. The gelato itself feels like it has a lot of TLC in it. Perfectly smooth and creamy. Exactly what you're looking for in an ice cream. We got the sea salt vanilla caramel and the goat cheese caramel cashew. The latter was so so good. You can really tell that they put a lot of goat cheese in the ice cream and the cashews added some good texture. If you like goat cheese then you'll love this. The sea salt vanilla caramel tasted so good when we had a sample of it but when we got our dish and had 3 bites back to back, the salt really overtakes your palate. We had to chug some water after a few bites. So doesn't this sound like a 3 star kinda place? I'll tell you why it isn't. Its their business model. All of their day old ice cream can be bought in pints for six bucks. And two for ten. I mentioned that was a great price and they said that its because they don't want to throw out their old food unless they have to, and selling pints of premium gelato at 6 bucks a pop helps them not have to do that. And I agree. We got two, a blueberry french toast and an olive oil almond. Good doggy.

Black Dog Gelato never fails to impress me. The flavors are very creative and everything is melt in your mouth (literally) delicious. My favorites are the ones they make with goat cheese. I can't walk past any of their locations without popping in. Hands down my favorite place for frozen treats.

What a great place to eat some great gelato, awesome flavor, nice clean location, friendly staff

Awesome gelato here. Some of the best. It's rich, creamy, smooth, light and full of good flavor. I haven't been disappointed. They have a good variety of flavors and they are interesting as well. For e.g., Sesame Fig Chocolate Chip, Strawberry Balsamic, Lemon Ginger, Goat Cheese Cashew Camel and others. You have to go here when in Chicago.

I came to this neighborhood for Kuma's corner and stumbled across Black Dog Gelato during the walk back to the L station. I recognized the name from Yelp browsing, Girl and the Goat (apparently they use their gelato for their desserts!) and from a "couples activity" website, so decided to stop by even though I was already really full. The person behind the counter was so nice - encouraged my cousin and me to try as many flavors as we wanted. They have some pretty interesting flavors, like Mexican hot chocolate (slight kick to it!), but I stuck with stracciatella. One thing I really liked about their gelato was that it was pretty light and fluffy, since a lot of times, gelato can get really dense. The interior is really cute and they have a little blurb on the walls about the difference between gelato and ice cream. They also offer donut ice cream sandwiches every Monday (using donuts from Glazed and Infused!)

Great flavor choices, I got the Turkish coffee and the bourbon butter pecan, my bf got a mint Oreo. Both were creamy and delicious but melted so fast we had a cold soup within 2 minutes, and the person checking us out had no idea how to work the register

I went to black dog gelato several times over the past few weeks. They were closed all the times except on Sunday I finally made it! Tomorrow(may 1st) they open every day of the week. I had the brownie per izzy's suggestion and it was good but I have had better. The gelato I selected was goat cheese caramel cashew !!! For not having chocolate I was impressed by how much I loved it! It was really an amazing treat and I only had a kid size 1 scoop. I can't wait to go back

Stopped here after happy hour on a Friday. Nice shop located in Roscoe Village, close to Fellger Park. The shop's sign is painted on a window (old skool style), but makes the place easy to miss if you are looking for an extruding sign or sign above. Once you get in, the main counter is located to your left and all the flavors (looks like they rotate a lot) are displayed on a string with clips and card stock signs. You can get flavors like Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel, Blueberry French Toast, Blood Orange Sorbet.... The gelato is made daily so the flavors are always rotating and changing based on the owners mood. There are some tables to sit and enjoy your cold treat... as well as a bench seat. Also nice blackboards/signs that educate you on the difference between gelato and ice cream (and the obvious information on why gelato is better for you... selling themselves well inside their store). I had the Oreo Mint flavor which was very minty (and NOT GREEN!). You could taste the freshness of the mint and the other flavors. Overall, the folks were friendly and the gelato hit the spot after dinner. Solid 3 star place.

My husband and I wanted to serve ice cream at our wedding reception, but were having a hard time finding a vendor who could provide a pre-packaged, corn syrup-free frozen treat. Since my husband is allergic to corn, we wanted to ensure that he could enjoy the dessert at our party, with no reservations. A colleague, who worked with Black Dog for her own wedding, highly recommended them, so I reached out to them for a quote. They were easy to work with via phone and email, and as it got to be closer to our event, we were able to come in for a tasting. They even sent us home with a container of my husband's favorite flavor (Vanilla Sea Salt Caramel), and two flavors that we were interested in serving, which neither of us could have due to nut allergies, that our friends taste tested in our stead. On the day of the event they dropped off and picked up the cooler (very sleek and chrome), filled with individual, labeled cups of the assortment of flavors we selected, gelato spades and napkins. We barely noticed them coming in and going out because they were so respectful of not taking us away from our guests. Aside from the wonderful customer service, their gelato and sorbet is positively exemplary. Our guests had so much fun trying the spectrum of available options, and were blown away by how each one was positively delicious. The quality is evident in every explosive bite, and every other gelato establishment seems to pale in comparison. We're so glad we decided to work with Black Dog for our special event!

I love the name of the restaurant.. :) the service here is very quick even when the store looks packed or is packed...there's limited seating so you might need to take your order to go and walk around while eating gelato... flavors are unique and I think changes consistently?... Chocolate Coffee Toffee Gelato - delicious...and it also has small pieces of actual toffee in it...maybe be damaging for your teeth if you're trying to be cautious about cavities though.. I know some ppl don't like it when it get stuck in your teeth...they're really small pieces tho.. Strawberry Gelato - just simply strawberry flavor gelato.. I would stop by if I was in the area to try all their unique flavors!

  • Justin B.

Tried the gelato-infused Glazed & Infused donuts this past Saturday afternoon; $15 for two of these treats was a hefty price tag but in fairness, you do get a lot of gelato for this price! The execution was just ok. I'll come back to try the gelato on its own, but as it was, the chocolate gelato built into the raspberry glazed donuts worked a little better than the banana-flavored gelato in the maple bacon long john...but neither one was something I would eat again. Very cool idea, just didn't meet my expectations in terms of taste.

When I feel guilty eating lots of ice cream, I turn to gelato. Cute little shop with rotating flavors that are displayed on colorful pieces of paper hanging behind the counter. I always go for the two scoops in a cup. So far my favorite flavors are the Malted Chocolate and the Chocolate Coffee Toffee. The salted caramel gelato was okay. The Cherry Root Beer sorbet was refreshing, and tasted like real root beer! Lots of different flavors, but while supplies last. They also offer donut gelato sandwiches featuring Glazed and Infused donuts, I think on Mondays. So much for a healthier alternative!

  • Christie P.

This place is the yummy, small-business gem every neighborhood needs. The gelato here is to die for! They have different flavors every day, but some exquisite flavors, thankfully, stick around as regulars, too. You can taste-test as many as you want, guilt-free, and the prices are completely reasonable. This a must-visit for the summer! Pro tip: Yelp and Google are not always reliable resources for their winter/summer hours, which seem to change based on the way the weather's moving. Call ahead to avoid disappointment!

Sad to see Bleeding Heart go, but thumbs up for Black Dog Gelato. There's a lot more space at this location and I liked the picnic bench seating. I didn't go for my usual faves Blood Orange and Goat Cheese Caramal Cashew, but instead went with the Baked Apple Pie and Espresso. They both were rich in flavor and creamy. Bits of crust and baked apples - pie in gelato form. Tasty. They also have some baked goods like Brownies and Birthday Cake, but the main thing here is the gelato (and sorbets). But I might try some Iced Turkish Coffee next time. Black Dog's never done me wrong and I hope it stays that way.

    (5)
  • Colleen C.

An iced Turkish coffee made with sweet cream and cardamom. WHAT!? So, so, so good. They don't do many coffee drinks, but what they do...they do SO WELL. Go get yourself an iced Turkish coffee and a gelato before the summer runs away from you. TOASTED COCNUT. Dear Lord. *now accepting credit cards for orders over $10. *grab a pint from the freezer! One for $5, or two for $8. *in the case made fresh daily.

New Black Dog Gelato location! I like the new location as it's a bit bigger, more seating inside, it's a nice space...the old Bleeding Heart Bakery space. The girls working inside tonight were both friendly and said we could try as many samples as we wanted. I tried the Apple Pie and it tasted like home...It seriously was like a cold apple pie! Delish! I went boring and with flavors I've had at Black Dog before - plain Chocolate and Oreo Mint. I've had the Mint before at Black Dog and knew it was real mint, it's strong so prepare yourself for it! With the added oreo in it, loved it. I've never tried the plain chocolate before so for me that was venturing into the great unknown and it didn't disappoint. I tried a brownie on this trip as well (to go for $4). It's better than nearly any bakery I've had one from! So thick and so chocolatey, holy goodness, it was a dream for this chocolate fiend. Honestly, you can't go wrong at Black Dog Gelato. It's fun icy treat eating with all of the amazing creations Jessica Oloroso comes up with~! If you haven't tried them yet, Mexican Hot Chocolate (it's spicy!) and Goat Cheese Caramel Cashew are the staples - start there!

I've always heard great things about Black Dog Gelato and I finally tried it last night. First off, I LOVE their late summer hours. There's nothing like treating yourself to gelato at 10:30-11:00 PM at night when you're craving something sweet. I went with a friend and we split the Strawberry Basil and Mixed Berry Sorbet. Both were DELICIOUS, but I loved the Mixed Berry Sorbet more - it was so sweet and refreshing! I can't wait to come back to try more flavors. Great customer service too!

Better than the location near Damen/Chicago. Dunno if I had bad luck, the one time I ever hit their 1st location? Maybe I did, but I'm in that area far less often than when I make it to Roscoe Village. Anyway, I have a super minor preference for Paciugo(not sure why), but I think Black Dog's second location has started to grow on me since I've visited it several times, and it's much easier for me to get to this location. Hopefully they serve the gelato donut sandwiches again at some point w/Glazed and Infused, since that's easily been my fav thing I've tried here.

Last night was the third time we have shown up during their advertised hours only I find that they are closed. Repeat: third time. If you're not going to be open when your site and store says you are, why bother posting your hours? So annoying. Sorry, black dog, you've lost our business.

Let's be clear: I like ice cream... sort of. Generally I am a bigger fan of all the junk you can put into ice cream than the actual frozen stuff itself. Normally most gelato falls flat for me as being pretty much the same as any other frozen stuff. Not this gelato. Say it with me: "gel-a-toooo." The texture is so dense and so creamy- like actual gelato! Not the airy crap people sometimes try to pass off as gelato. And the flavors, lordy, the flavors! I had the malted vanilla, the oreo mint and the caramel cashew goat cheese. Holy. Crap. I could probably have eaten all the malted vanilla in the shop. The malt flavor was so clear and perfect. And the goat cheese had exactly the tang and finish that you would dream goat cheese gelato should have. It's hard to screw up oreo mint, but that being said, the mint flavor was really lovely and intense. Truly the best gelato I've ever had outside of Italy. That's not to say I've had better gelato in Italy. Probably because I haven't been to Italy. Thank god this place is right down the street. See you again soon!

Excellent gelato in a lovely space make this a great spot to stop and grab some dessert. Black Dog features a strong selection of rotating traditional and not-so-traditional flavors that should allow anyone to find something interesting. I've tried a number of flavors. The goat cheese caramel cashew is my favorite and worthy of all the praise it has received. The slight tang from the goat cheese works perfectly with the sweetness from the caramel and earthiness of the cashew. It's an amazing flavor that justifies a visit in its own right. The sea salt vanilla caramel is fantastic as well. The mint oreo has a powerful mint flavor. The bourbon butterscotch is very well balanced. The chocolate and the strawberry are fabulous versions of classic flavors. I didn't love the rosemary Irish cream, I think I would have liked it better if the rosemary was a bit stronger. The decor is minimal, but welcoming and colorful. It feels very local. The service was attentive, if not especially friendly. Overall, Black Dog Gelato has a variety of delicious flavors to choose from and a few standouts that always make it worth a visit.

Quality gelato, with some interesting flavors in the lineup. I had a trio in my large-sized cup: Toasted Coconut, Balsamic Strawberry, and Chocolate-Raspberry. My fav of the three was the strawberry, probably one of the best true strawberry flavors captured in a frozen treat.

  • Julie C.

Delicious gelato in interesting flavor combinations, friendly staff, and a cute space. You can taste as many flavors as you want, and the staff is very accommodating about samples and making recommendations. (I also find that they're friendlier than the staff at the Ukrainian Village location.) I like the goat cheese caramel cashew. The last time I was here, there was a $5 minimum to use a debit/credit card. If you get a small, you won't be spending $5, so be prepared with cash. If you drive, you can find free, easy street parking on Melrose and just walk over.

We got married this past weekend and had Black Dog gelato at our wedding! If you are looking for a unique dessert for wedding or outing, they are definitely your go to! Strawberry Basil, Cantaloupe, Nutella pretzel and Banana fudge were all a hit!

  • Nicole W.

Really, what's not to love? Friendly employees who will let you taste pretty much every gelato flavor before deciding. Both the chocolate and pistachio varieties are bangin'...and there are so many more creative options I would like to stick my face into. But, sigh, there are only so many caloric options in one day and a limited supply of pants with a significant amount of stretch in my wardrobe. For a couple of bucks you too can experience creamy dreamy bliss. The interior is fresh and clean - a minimalist spot to grab a sweet treat, an iced Turkish coffee or a brownie. Black Dog Gelato is this woman's best friend.

  • Rachel G.

This place is good if you like super sweet gelato, but it has a pretty limited selection of flavors. Granted, the flavors offered are creative. The layout of the shop is also somewhat small and awkward. It's not that great of a spot to just hang and kick back with your cup or cone of goodness. I have to compliment the staff though. They are incredibly friendly and helpful. Not sure that I will be back though. Personally, I believe there are better options out there.

You know the neighborhood's evolving when hipster gelato fave Black Dog infiltrates Roscoe Village! What to expect: Interesting gelato flavors to excite your inner Food Network Chef Wannabe... Goat cheese? Espresso? The most succulent cinnamon ever? Even Cassata, the Sicilian Easter cake? I'm sure at some point they'll be slinging gelato laced with unicorn tears and leprechaun glitter. If you don't have the patience to wait in the intense lines, grab some pre-packed pints to go and get in touch with your inner fat kid immediately.

Black Dog Gelato is certainly the best place to get gelato if you have a taste for adventurous and delicious flavors. My favorite is the Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel. It's a must for me every time I go, so it's a good thing that I can get 2 flavors for a small cup and 3 flavors for a large cup. Other great rotating flavors include Blueberry French Toast and Espresso with Candied Orange Peel & Toasted Coconut. A few quick tips: 1. The Ukrainian Village location usually has a line out the door on the weekends, so get there earlier in the evening or head to the Roscoe Village location where there's usually a shorter line. 2. If you're not sure which flavor to order, you can always ask for a sample or two. 3. If you want to bring some home, there's usually some "day old" pints on sale.

Is it wrong to wear winter jeans in the summer? this is Chicago where summers last in hours right? and food love affairs last a lifetime. Chef Jesse O is the devil inside. The gelato tasted good. We went about 45 minutes before closing on a weekend and they only had 3 options. We really wanted to try it so we got it anyway even though it wasnt the flavors we wanted. To me, you can't advertise all these flavors and then not have most of them and not reduce the price or offer some kind of deal. I get that they didn't want to bust out a whole container that soon before closing. But you know...

I have been seeking out a replacement for my weekly custard craving since moving from Edgewater to Southport Corridor back in February. After trying quite a few places, I think that I may have found one finally. They have super good gelato, and the flavor offerings range from simple standbys to more adventurous flavors which is good for me since I am more of a simple standby kind of person. The service is friendly, the environment is cute and clean. Parking is easy if you drive. Prices are pretty reasonable. I think we paid $4.50 for a small (two flavors). I had cookie dough and vanilla malt. Both were great!

  • Megan T.

Yum yum yum yum YUM! I had been to the Ukrainian Village Black Dog once before and after finding out they had a closer location in Roscoe Village I had to plan a trip. I got chocolate and salted caramel and my beau got the basil coffee and we were both happy campers. While it is a little on the pricey side (+$7 for two smalls), I don't mind for the high quality, bangin' taste, and support of a local business. Also, this location accepts credit cards (I think the UV one is cash only?).

    (4)
  • Iman J.

I've gotta say it's the best gelato I've had in Chicago. Considering it's right next to Tony's Burrito Mex makes it even better... burrito & gelato, sounds like a great night. I got a cone with pistachio and rose petal and it was perfect in every way possible. Stop reading, go try it.

  • Marnie S.

Yep, this place is as good as everyone says it is. Goat cheese caramel cashew has, unlike many ice cream varieites that try to incorporate it, the perfect amount of goat cheese flavor to balance out the sweetness of the other ingredients. It is rich and memorable, and when you have the option between a small and a large, TRUST ME, the small is a hell of a lot of gelato. Only you wouldn't know it because the price is so reasonable. Also, this staff clearly gets hired on a "truly loves the product" basis, because everyone who attended to me was psyched to talk gelato with me. You don't forget enthusiastic service!

    (4)
  • Phoebe W.

Outstanding staff, who let me have as many samples as I please. They had a fantastic booth at Pitchfork Music Festival and their store is just as great. Seriously, some of the nicest people you will ever come across. Innovative selection of flavors. Favorites include Blueberry French Toast, Rosemary Irish Cream, Espresso, Blood Orange Sorbet, honestly the list can go on and on. Unfortunately, this Yelp review is not like a Willy Wonka lickable Wallpaper so go taste it for yourself!

I've been here twice, both with my daughter. The first time was great: the gelato was excellent (she had a mint oreo; I went with vanilla and chocolate -- both were outstanding), and the atmosphere is cute -- just a few metal tables, a colorful couch, and bright colors everywhere. Really liked it. We decided to head back a couple of days later. I got salted peanut mixed with some fantastic Goose Island stout variant. Amazing. My daughter tried a flavor, ordered it, and then decided she didn't like it after all. (It was pomegranate or something similar -- not a flavor I thought she'd like, but sometimes it's good to let kids be adventurous.) After she realized she didn't like it, I went to purchase another cup for her but, unfortunately, they have a credit card minimum and I was out of cash. The person behind the counter said there was nothing that could be done, then tried to convince me to buy a pint of gelato, which I didn't need, and my daughter and I ultimately decided to just leave and seek frozen treats elsewhere. I'd have shared my own snack with her but had a cold and didn't want her to get sick; instead, we tossed both of ours and headed out. This certainly wasn't the fault of the person behind the counter, who even offered to give my daughter a taste of a different flavor, but the experience was a colossal bummer regardless. I'm giving them four stars, as the gelato is great and the people are very nice, but I'm not going to go back -- I guess I'd rather my money go to a place that's a bit more kid-friendly. Mariano's may not be better, but it's more convenient, and I can purchase a second cup of gelato without having to spend 4x more on stuff I don't need.

This place is the shabanga bang bang governer christie wang chung. That sounded bad. But this place is not, its tasty, and frozen, and worth a special trip. they really have pretty much just gelato and coffee apparently, so come thru when its hot. Fav flav's? Mexican Chocolate Blood Orange Vanilla Nutella Holler back stretch cadillac grab the sticky buns from Paul's pastry shack.

  • Hugh B.

The Black Dog people have taken the frenetic old Bleeding Heart space and turned it into a serene parlor that offers amazing gelato. Standard flavors like pistachio are outstanding, but most have interesting flavor twists and combinations. With a small cup, you can get two flavors. (You can get more flavors with bigger cups.) My only problem is deciding which flavors to get, for everything they offer is interesting and delicious. You could seriously do "eenie meenie minie mo" and be completely happy here.

I came here on a Sunday afternoon after driving past the other location. The other location, however, was closed. What gives?! Ice cream/gelato shops should always be open, every day, especially when the weather gets nicer. we came in, location was adorable, very cozy, some nice table and chairs, and a little booth section by the window which I was all over. Now onto the flavors, I wouldn't say it was like baskin robbins in terms of quantity but they had some unique flavors such as blueberry french toast, goat cheese and caramel, bacon flavored gelato. My mom wasn't sure what she wanted but the guy working there was super nice and let her try like 4 different things, then again it was pretty empty at the time, and I'm sure if we came back on like a 90 degree August day, that wouldn't be the case, but either way I'm glad he let her experiment. After her little gelato tasting, she went with the greek yogurt sorbet and really enjoyed it because of the freshness it provided. My dad went with the goat cheese, caramel and I believe it had some kind of nuts on it as well, he loved it, it was savory yet sweet at the same time, totally up his alley. Now me, with all these unique flavors, I went with my traditional but never disappointing chocolate. But I did spice it up by getting two scoops in a waffle cone. It was delicious, not the best that I've ever had but definitely better than some of the other places. However, my only complaint is that the waffle cone tasted a little stale which didn't make me too happy. It tasted like a day old or something, and with that I would have given black dog gelato only 3 stars, but with the excellent customer service we received, they get 4 stars from me so I'm definitely a fan. For next time, I'll swing by the other location (when they open) and see if it varies too much from this one, but I hope the service is just as good!

OMIGOSH this is the best place ever! I am in love. I thuroughly enjoyed the malted vanilla and the signature, Goat Cheese, Caramel, and Cashew. I will be back!!!!

Holy Yes Please! Love this place! Staff is super nice and the gelato is fanstic! Love the goat cheese cashew caramel as other people have suggested. If you go on a day when they have the Bourbon gelato dipped in dark chocolate and bacon on a stick, DO NOT PASS UP, unless you are vegetarian or vegan, because bacon. Yum.

Having had lots of gelato in various parts of Italy-I am biased but willing to admit that this place is a good value and a quality product. The gourmet flavors do make this place a MUST and the prices are extremely reasonable. I must agree, the Goat Cheese gelato was amazing! I am going to stop in again my goal is to try the Gelato Bar with chocolate and bacon!!

From Scooter's to Margie's, I really love the variety of frozen treats available in this city. I've definitely come late to the Black Dog train. That said, now that I've found it, I'm here to stay! They have just the right amount of flavors to satisfy most people while not overwhelming those coming in, especially for the first time. They let you sample the flavors as much as you want and you can get multiple flavors in one cup (smalls run ~$3 and are decently sized). Most importantly, imo, this place doesn't upset my stomach! I'm somewhat bullish, and even though getting a Boston Shake @ Scooter's will leave me feeling like hell for the rest of the day, I tend to do it anyways. Black Dog provides a product as quality as any other shop in the city, but, for whatever reason, I feel fine when I'm finished. Love!! Rec: melted vanilla & brown sugar cinnamon. mmm

Goat cheese cashew caramel really is something else. Very soft, maybe not cold enough, but taste was great. The blueberry French toast got overshadowed by the goat cheese. Will have to find a second favorite flavor. If nearby, definitely stop in for a treat.

Black Dog Gelato is less than a block from our house. When they opened a few years ago we knew we wanted to share this delicious treat with our wedding guests. They offer a few options but we chose the adorable gelato cart. Our guests loved the surprise gelato and couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was! Black Dog worked seamlessly with our caterer whom served the gelato. I'd definitely recommend to anyone who loves gelato!

When we moved here from San Francisco we were sad to leave behind Bi Rite Creamery. Even though we are a long way from our favorite ice cream spot, Black Dog Gelato is a lovely substitute and certainly fills the void while we are here. The flavors are always entertaining and the taste lives up to each of the names. My only complaint is that they are not open until Spring again because they close for the coldest months! Hurry, Spring!

So, I was on the wine stroll in Lincoln Square and one of the stops was serving Black Dog Gelato samples. I tried the Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel and nearly fell over at how good it was. Rich, creamy, sweet with a hint of salty... YUM! It instantly made me sad that I had moved and no longer lived within walking distance of their Belmont location (formerly the Bleeding Heart Bakery). I stopped in to the store and sampled a few more of their items and they were all just as good. I particularly enjoyed Butterscotch Bourbon Pecan. Since I live pretty far away, I got a dish for in the moment and then took two pints home with me. I love this place and they encourage you to try a little of everything which you should absolutely do. It's also very reasonably priced and they let you mix flavors in the same dish if you want.

Good Lord, forget the gelato.. their brownie is fucking amazing! AMAAAZING. Thick, dense, gooey, fudgey, rich.. do I taste some coffee in there? tastes like mocha.. It's damn. good. Hope I didn't sound redundant. Alas, I could only finish half after already polishing a small cup of their gelato. That's my excuse. I use to adore Ghirardelli's brownie because it's like eating a chunk of chocolate butter but this one just knocks it out of the ball park. Perfect in every way.. it's exactly what a brownie should be. 4 dollars for a big slab. I probably won't bother baking any brownies for awhile now. I can just buy these and pass it off as mine. And then my coworkers and friends will be so amazed by my baking skills! muahahahaha. ok. I felt a little awful that the brownie went into a large bag because that's all they had in regards to bags. The Pacific Northwestern tree hugger inside of me wept and I had a strong urge to go plant a tree. And hell to the no I'm not going to go on a walk down belmont with my brownie exposed to the elements. Birds shit from the sky while a CTA bus puffs out exhaust smoke and dust all in your face. The gelato is great of course.. this is no baskin robbins nor paciugo- with only a small handful of flavors but they're all really good. I just haven't tried their sorbets yet. It's a charming little space and everyone here is so nice and patient while you decide what to have. The small is the perfect serving size that's satisfying here. Also my favorite so far is the mexican hot chocolate probably because it reminds me of Coffee People's glorious mexican hot chocolate in Portland. Mmmmm. Get that if you ever fly into PDX. I made a resolution to eat healthier more often during the week, trying to reduce my bad ways of indulging myself everyday- before my trip to Portland in a few weeks! where hopefully my mom won't gasp in disdain and say Izzadora what happened to you In Chicago?!?? You got FAT "Lets pray about it." that's her answer for everything. Like when my car got broken into in the west loop. Black Dog's brownies aren't helping and I can't say no to satan. shame.

I'm so thankful that it took us awhile to discover that Black Dog is within walking distance of our apartment... It is so GOOD! I'll just repeat the other reviews and agree that the goat cheese cashew is the way to go. Yum!

We used Black Dog's catering for the dessert for our wedding last weekend, and they were a huge hit. Our venue had a bar in front that was slightly separate from the dancing, and they rolled in an ice cream cart with four flavors of our choice, and served the guests for 2 hours. Fun aside: Because or order was large enough, Jessica offered to make a flavor just for the occasion. Since we had such a hard time choosing from the flavors that they were offering, we declined, but I'm sure there are other people out there who would get a big kick out of the idea.

I first tasted Black Dog Gelato at Socca, my favorite restaurant in my neighborhood. Socca utilizes Black Dog Gelato sorbets and gelatos in many of their desserts. I absolutely loved the Concord Grape Sorbet and Peanut Butter Gelato in a deconstructed PB&J dessert currently on Socca's menu and made a mental note to try and swing by the actual Black Dog Gelato shop at some point to check out what other goodies they might have. A little over a week ago I happened to be in the vicinity of the Ukrainian Village location and was so impressed that today I purposely detoured back while running errands with my wife (actually the truth is I was having a hard time parking last night due to a Cub's home game and purposely parked my car more than half way towards Black Dog so I'd have an excuse to stop in the next day). My wife and I are both big ice cream/gelato fans; it has been one of my favorite foods since childhood. While my wife and I often have different tastes we both agreed that this was hands down the best gelato we have had. Black Dog Gelato is not your typical gelato shop, but is truly in a league of it's own. There are approximately twenty flavors including a handful of run-of-the-mill flavors, but most consist of fun, interesting flavor combinations that really elevate the taste. As an example of some of the flavors there is a goat cheese cashew (my wife's favorite), a sesame fig chocolate chip, nutella with pretzels and Mexican hot chocolate. Flavors rotate frequently. The server was friendly and allowed my wife and I sample as many flavors as we wanted. For just $3 you can have two scoops (same flavor or mix & match) in a cone, for $3.50 two scoops in a cup and for $4.75 three scoops in a larger cup. As there were so many amazing flavors I had to opt for the three scoop. After much deliberation I chose the pumpkin, the pistachio and the salted peanut (I think I had an easier time choosing my condo, my car and my wife than I had trying to narrow down my choice to just three of the many, many tantalizing flavors). Portion sizes are fairly generous, but the most incredible aspect of Black Dog Gelato is the intense eye popping flavor. Owner Jessica Oloroso is a magician! Usually when I eat gelato the first bite or two tastes great, but then the flavor gradually dissipates. With Black Dog Gelato each and every bite literally has your taste buds dancing with flavor; the last bite is as intense as the first. You can tell they are utilizing high quality, fresh ingredients as well as the flavor is pure and natural. In addition to a great selection of gelatos and sorbets, they offer gelato sandwiches (gelato in between a pair of homemade cookies) and root beer floats utilizing Goose Island root beer. My wife also ordered some coffee and was impressed with the quality of the coffee as well. According to their website they also offer a whiskey gelato bar (that sounds dangerously good from the description) and some unique homemade sodas (grapefruit with peppercorn is referenced). Fortunately Black Dog Gelato is a couple of miles away from our condo; if it was any closer I would be inclined to stop in daily and would quickly need to procure some larger clothes! Nevertheless everything is so great here I am sure I will be finding excuses to pop over frequently enough. I never thought I would find a destination gelato venue, but Black Dog Gelato is so good, it is well worth a trip from other neighborhoods just for some gelato.

Everything I want in gelato. I tried Pineapple Basil, Raspberry Truffle, Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel, Butterscotch Bourbon, Strawberry Balsamic...probably some others but I got overwhelmed by deliciousness. I kept being suprised by the legit flavors - the pineapple basil tastes just like pineapple and basil, the goat cheese tasted just like goat cheese...they are true to their flavors! I also have to give kudos for their prices and their staff. I got a small so I get get two scoops (more flavors that way, of course) and it was only $3.50 - for gourmet gelato, that's awesome! Also, although there were a decent amount of people, the staff encouraged me to keep sampling. Usually I limit myself to one or two because I feel guilty but that was too hard to do here. Too many yummy sounding gelatos! I will definitely be back. Every day, probably.

Hmmm was expecting more based on all the reviews. Sampled a few flavors but wasn't overly impressed. Has a great neighborhood business feel. Doesn't take credit cards for orders under $5.

Stumbled upon the Belmont location one evening on my way home. Remembering all those glowing reviews I read online, I went in and bought a pint each of strawberry zabaglione and orange coffee coconut. While the texture of the gelato is nice, I wasn't blown away by the flavors. The zabaglione tasted more salty than sweet, almost like they grabbed the salt by mistake. The orange coffee coconut very strange (though I could be biased as I like my coffee unadulterated), coffee flavor is very subdued. Maybe I didn't get the right flavors.

This place opened mere steps away from my apartment, and the result has been nothing short of addiction. I make excuses to head over to Black Dog. I'll go, pick up gelato for now, AND whiskey pops for later. Mmmm, om nom nom!! The flavors are strong and wild, and the list is different every time. My favorite is blueberry french toast. Try the florals! You get multiple flavors, even with a small, and the price is low. The staff will let you sample everything. Beware, they are currently CASH-ONLY. The first time I went, I had to have a friend spot me. Cute story- I actually saw a man come in to pay for gelato he'd gotten for free a day prior, due to the same problem. That's very kind of Black Dog, and probably loses them a bit of inventory to the less-than-honest. Karma points, guys! I went back and forth on the star rating, and had to dock them one for organization. Two out of three times I go, someone serves me, then takes me directly to the register, passing the slower patrons. This makes sense, in theory- I want to skip over the folks who are tasting everything and discussing the choices as if their lives depend on it. However, several times, I've been made to cut in front of people who were ready to pay. I've gotten dirty looks twice, and that puts a damper on my otherwise heavenly experience. Keep it up, Black Dog. I intend on bringing my suburban, chocolate-and-vanilla-only father here for something with goat cheese. ;)

A while back, I told a friend of mine to try a certain brand of ice cream. She tried it, loved it, and has since hated me for telling me about that ice cream ever since. As a bit of revenge, she told me to try Black Dog Gelato..."the best you'll ever have", she says. Since their new location opened up just steps away from my house a week or so ago, I decided to act on her tip. Several flavors caught my eye immediately as I walked in front of the counter: "Nutella" (always a sucker for anything with hazelnut in it), "Mexican Hot Chocolate" (cinnamon and cayenne in chocolate) and mango (mmmm). The girl behind the counter was gracious and patient with me (what can I say, it took me a while to decide) and was nice enough to try those and several other flavors (bonus!). Ended up ordering all three (again, I couldn't decide). Final verdict: two thumbs up. Thick, flavorful and tastes just like ice cream. The best I've ever had? It's pretty close. With hot days arriving during the Chicago summer, several return trips are certainly in order. By the way: hey Julie, I hate you.

Words cannot describe how happy I was when they brought their summer hours back and they happened to be open on one of my free nights this past week! My only complaint? The staff wasn't overly friendly or helpful and the signs were really hard to read to pick a flavor. When I asked to try a sample, the girl was really hesitant but did eventually give me one. The gelato on the other hand was outstanding. The dark chocolate was just about the best I've ever had. The goat cheese caramel was good as well, even though it was a little funky after awhile. The Mexican Hot Chocolate was a tad bit spicy but still really good, rich, and creamy. The interior isn't too warm or tasteful, I haven't been to the original location so I can't make a comparison. Come here for the gelato, not necessarily the atmosphere. And beware, they are cash only.

I've had black dog gelato once or twice before, but only as pints from the store. Was pleasantly surprised to see their store open at the old Bleeding Heart Bakery location (Damen and Belmont). This is the best gelato in Chicago hands down. All of the flavors are really intense. The blackberry pomegranate exploded with fresh blackberry flavor (and its a lovely neon purple). Cinnamon sugar is what apple pie dreams of being served with. Chocolate raspberry, lovely. Pistachio, really really good. Add to the fact that you can get 2 flavors in a regular or 3 in a large, and that's a lot of flavor for a desert. Meanwhile the gelato is creamy, smooth and not too heavy. Well worth the 4.75$ for a large. So now the best gelato shop is only a few blocks west of the best frozen custard shop (Scooters). There's plenty of room in the neighborhood for both. Note that they don't take credit cards yet but will soon. Welcome Black Dog!

I really wasn't a big fan of this place. To be fair, I arrived at the end of the night, and they only had 3-4 flavors left, and all of them were mediocre--banana bread, cherry rootbeer sorbet (not a good flavor combo in my opinion), strawberry rhubarb sorbet, peach sorbet, Mexican hot chocolate. I got a small strawberry rhubarb sorbet & peach sorbet, and the peach sorbet was not good. I know, I know. You can obviously try the flavors (though I noticed the staff getting annoyed/audibly sighing when you asked to try more than 1 flavor -- how am I supposed to know if I want to commit to the flavor, if I don't get to sample it?). The strawberry rhubarb was best, but I should have just passed on buying anything all together because it wasn't that great overall. I also tried the Mexican hot chocolate, and I didn't care for that at all. Probably wouldn't be back to try any other flavors.

A big welcome to Black Dog Gelato in Roscoe Village! The small storefront opened in the old Bleeding Heart bakery just east of the Belmont and Damen intersection. So, far - it's been 3 days since they have opened - things are a bit bare inside, but the gelato is wonderful! The fresh flavors - which you can sample as many as you like - are prepared daily and are delicious! Last night I had the sea salt caramel and nutella (Yes!) and both were fantastic - rich and flavorful. The price for each of the options is reasonable - in the large size you can have up to 3 flavors. I'm glad that I have a short walk to go to Black Dog as it makes me feel better about eating the cold goodness that they serve up!

With Coldstones dying out because of the gelato and frozen yogurt craze (The Coldstone in Lincoln Square by me just closed), I have been in search of trying new cold treats. I love Paciugo, and I always saw Black Dog while I was driving by. After checking out the Yelp reviews, I knew I had to go out of my way to visit. I am so glad I did! I stop in around 12:30pm. The place is quiet and adorable, really clean. The young lady helping me out was so friendly, and let me try many flavors and gave me tons of suggestions. I sat down with my gelato, she continued to chat with me. She was so pleasant, I wish I had gotten her name so I could mention it here. I got a large with 3 flavors and tried the Goat Cheese with cashews, the Espresso Orange, and Nutella and Pretzels. All to die for! So delicious, amazing customer service, and I CANNOT WAIT to go back again. I think I will this weekend...Amazing. I just hope you have seasonal flavors, I'm thinking Pumpkin :) :) :)

After a year and the place being open again this Summer, moving from 4 to 5 stars. If you get there before things sellout (don't go TOO late) you'll have a neat choice of the flavors they craft.

Some very nice flavors here. Their flavoring is more on the strong side than, say, Ici in Berkeley, where the flavors are more subtle. Really smooth and, given that this is gelato, not overly creamy (like Bi-Rite in SF). Perhaps also because it's gelato, all the flavors seemed similarly well textured, unlike Ici, where some flavors end up not so.

Yummy. Came here for dessert after a "meh" dining experience and left on cloud 8...my "fake" diet/everything in moderation mentality wouldn't let me get a big size gelato so I could leave on cloud 9. But enough about my diet, their combinations are masterful. Goat cheese caramel cashew. Strawberry balsamic. I admit to playing it safe that evening with some cherry chocolate chip but the wonderful lady behind the counter offered me a little taste of their creative concoctions. "How do you control yourself around all of this tasty gelato?" I ask her while savoring the last trace of goat cheese caramel, sweet/salty nirvana "I don't," she replies with a smile. "I tell myself it's fine because I bike to work." Lucky her. She gets to leave work everyday, on cloud 9.

Great gelato! I guess that would really sum it up. Tried the sesame chocolate chip and nutella. Both were great. Smooth and creamy. I like that there flavors are flexible and change. Flavors are original and have a nice fresh made taste. Would love to try more.

Very creamy-tasting and yummy gelato, and not as fattening as ice-cream? Neighborhood parking in the area seems a little tight. I had to park on the corner as the others walked the rest of the way to buy their gelato.

yes they make good gelato/ice-cream.. but why so expensive??i swear if i had money i would eat this thing everyday no problem! but this place is so pricey!!!..caramel goat cheese gelato is the best. lower the prices so people from other segments of the society can enjoy this taste too!

Best gelato in Chicago. hehe that rhymed. Anyway, I went into this every girl's dream interior decorated cafe with birdcages and paper butterflies a few weeks ago during Roscoe Village Burger Fest. I don't care much for burgers but I care a lot for sweet treats and on this particularly hot evening a nice cup of gelato seemed just the thing. I was not disappointed. I looked at their menu and saw absurd flavors....goat cheese caramel cashew? Gross. No, actually it's not gross. It's surprisingly delicious. The guys behind the counter let you try as many flavors as your curious taste buds desire. I bet I used 10 spoons and no, I can't recall all the flavors. What I can remember is the two I chose complimented each other beautifully side by side in a cup. It was raspberry and chocolate of some sort. I wish their website had a menu of all the flavors. I'm sure they change all the time because the combinations are so culinary crazy.... moscato and watermelon.... wow. Brilliant. So there's not too much negative vibes to give this place except the price. It's over $3 for a little cup of heaven. Yet, it's a locally owned and operated business so I justify the high cost for supporting a very good gelato cafe.

Black Dog Gelato is consistently delicious. The goat cheese caramel cashew is one of my favorites, but last time it was a little too goat-y for my taste. I love that you can sample the flavors before buying. Get there early before they run out of sugar cones!

I was very excited to see Black Dog Gelato opened up in my neighborhood. I'm a big gelato fan so I couldn't wait to try it out. My husband and I got the large to sample 3 different flavored including banana fudge, strawberry balsamic, and blackberry lime. The price was 4.75. All the favors were delicious. I also sampled the cucumber rose water sorbet which was amazing! Can't wait to go back.

While my husband holds down the fort at Fellger Park, I often find myself wondering the area in search of cool beverages or ice cream during the summer. I had heard from a few friends about the deliciousness that is Black Dog but inadvertently found this location. Honestly, this is probably the best Gelato I have ever had in the states. I had a hard time choosing what I wanted so I randomly decided on half Blood Orange Sorbet in the same cup as the Vanilla Bean Gelato. I intended on sharing with my son but since I just so happened to create the most heavenly creamsicle on earth.. the small cup was gone by the time I waited for two red lights and walked back to the park. I have been dreaming about the three different flavors I sampled and can't wait to get back to try the salted peanut or goat cheese.

Best gelato and sorbet I've ever had! I am so glad this place opened in my neighborhood. I've already tried at least 12 of the flavors, and loved every one. Watch out - the Mexican hot chocolate has a kick to it! My favorite sorbet is cantaloupe and my favorite gelato is goat cheese. You can buy a pint and take it home. There are several tables inside that are a nice place to sit.

I had the pineapple basil on my first visit. It tastes like...pineapple...and...basil. I say that with respect. See, most commercial sorbet tastes like sugar water with a hint of a store-bought extract. Not here. One bite, and I was transported to the pineapple fields of Hawaii, on to basil farms in Italy, and then back to my beloved Chicago, where the alchemy all happens. Just saw on the FB page that they're taking Thanksgiving orders. Forget the pies this year. I'm going to blow my guests' minds with BD gelato.

Creative and tasty flavors that don't disappoint. You can taste flavor & not just sweetness. Def the better of the two gelato shops in RV. Flavors rotate. Creamy consistency. Last time I was in it was cash only. Conviently located across from Fellger Park.

It has already been established that I love gelato with every fiber of my fat-kid being. Several months back when my husband and I realized Black Dog Gelato finally opened by us we ran out of the house pulling shoes on as we left and leaving a cloud of dust behind us. Black Dog is perfect for anyone who likes a sweet treat on a warm (or not so warm) day. They have your more standard flavors such as chocolate and pistachio for folks who prefer a traditional flavor profile. If you've got more adventurous folks in your group, you cannot go wrong with raspberry lemongrass or goat cheese cashew caramel (yeah, that's ONE flavor). For anyone watching their dairy intake, the sorbets are phenomenal and refreshing. You can sample anything and everything and no one looks at you like a burden when you ask for your 5th flavor taste. If you aren't able to grab a seat there, you can always take your treat across the street to Fellger park as there are plenty of picnic tables and benches. Nothing says summer like a cool confection on a warm day in the park. Perfection!

Went last night after reading about Black Dog in an article. Had the Goat Cheese Carmel Cashew (AMAZING) and the Raspberry Truffle (good, but very chocolately). I also tested the Sweet Corn Lavendar (very tasty with a hint of lavendar flavor) and the Strawberry Balsamic (very good as well - intense real strawberry flavor - nothing fake tasting about it). Overall I thought it was awesome and look forward to trying new flavors next time.

Sweet baby Jesus this place is great! I love this small little ice cream shop, AND love that it was listed as one of the best gelato places in Chicago, so we had to try it! We had the Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel and the Butterscotch Bourbon Pecan. One word: AMAZEBALLS. I adore places that use fresh ingredients and whose menus constantly change, and this place is it! If you haven't had enough gelato while you were there, you can take a pint home with you. Fabulous.
