This is a great lunch place. I cannot get over how good (and huge) the chicken caesar is....its a pretty simple salad but man its good here!! Very friendly staff, and helpful if you have questions. They have a good amount of salads, sandwiches, and panninis. I have also had one of thier chicken sandwiches, I was surprised how big it was for a reasonable price. The chicken was a tad dry, but the other toppings, sauce, and size made up for it. But that caesar salad is where its at. Get it with garlic bread.

2 words. Black. Russian. Delicious ham and cheese on pumpernickel bread. It's great, right across from work at the CBOT! The lemon pound cake is also phenomenal.

Great variety of hot plate items, deli style fare, salads, and DIY (both soup and salad) to the extent that I could probably go here twice a week and always have something different. My companions all had salads, and all I could notice is how doused the lettuce was in dressing. I would definitely request dressing on the side if you, like me, don't like to have to save my salad from drowning. I had what was supposed to be italian wedding soup. It was creamy and had chicken and orzo pasta in it. That is not italian wedding soup. Nonetheless, I'm not going to let a technicality like this ruin my assessment of the soup; it was good, especially for a chilly and windy day. Random complaint: I feel like the lines (you stand at the station where you want to order be it salad, sandwich, hot plates, etc... and wait for your turn, then you check out in a different area) is poorly designed solely b/c there is not enough space between the two areas for people to comfortably stand at lunchtime. I know it's a weird complaint, but I really hate feeling claustrophobic in a lunch line when a) it's not even that busy in the joint and b) there is huge wasted space where the island stands with the condiments. It's just poor planning with the space and completely not representative of the quality food Alonti Deli has to offer. If you, kind yelpers, have not tried this place, it's definitely worth a visit to add to your loop lunching list.

Salads, Samiches and Pasta. Great food but the prices suck. I would have given them 4 stars if the prices were more reasonable. They recently completed remodeling the place which was definitely a major improvement.

I like this place, and despite working around the corner, don't eat here often. It's a little pricey (considering the abundance of cheap eats in the area), but worth it. This is my "special treat" place I go to when I've been good and have a few extra bucks. I usually get the lasagna special or a panini and soup. Everything else looks good, even coming from someone picky. Things that I don't even like look good enough to make me think about trying it! The service is good - the food is fresh, and they regularly fill the soup so it doesn't look (or taste) like it's been sitting out all day. The last time I went the manager (I'm assuming) was trying to guess how much everyone's meal was before it was rang (rung?) up. He was pretty accurate, and clearly enjoying himself. Ahh, good food and entertainment!

Came here one afternoon on a day off in the late afternoon. I wasn't too hungry and was struggling with what I decided I wanted to order; eventually I settled on one of their sandwiches. One of their employees suggested that if I wasn't too hungry, I try the chicken tortilla soup. I promptly asked if it would be wasteful for my sandwich order to be cancelled ("Nope! We use the toasted bread to make croutons at the end of the day.") and got a cup of soup. It was very tasty!! The woman that rang us up was sweet as can be - the one who recommended the soup to me in the first place. If I were in the loop more often, I'd definitely be a regular here!

This is a catering review. Every now and then our office would order Alonti's boxed lunch for meetings and such. The sandwiches are okay but beware your bread choice. I've had soggy sandwiches that fall apart. I had the salad box lunch yesterday, with pecan crusted chicken (sounds yummy, right?) the chicken was so dry chewy and stringy and gross. Pros: on the plus side, the cookies are amazeballs.

UPDATE: Despite the abrubt service I've received from staff here, I just keep going back, thus a 2 star review just doesn't adequately capture my real impression of this place. The manager is also congenial enough to make up for the sometimes shortness of the staff. I'll say it again. The breakfast special RULES

Kind of a dive in appearance, but food is good.

Like others have said, overlooked. I've had both the -Black Russian (Dark pumpernickel with ham) -Big Al's which is a club with the PERFECT bacon. Anytime someone new is at the corner I recommend it first -The Tiger Thai Beef is a suprising winner. The beef, thicker than what you'd get on something like an Italian beef but more tender. Crispness of the carrots and cucumbers with the spice delivered by their Thai sauce sure makes it taste like a Thai version of an Italian beef with extra fresh veggies. Food is 5 star however service is 3. The speed it ok but the order process is just confusion when it is busy. I think it would work better if they lined up like a potbelly. It's pretty much a wide counter where everyone walks up. So basically they ask "next customer" and everyone looks at each other for 5-10 seconds doing the "You, no you, you, ok me then"

I like the food fine. Not amazing but solid salads. The staff at the sandwich/salad counter always look miserable. I can ignore that. Recently twice ive gone in at 11:30 to get a salad and several people both times have totally ignored me and given no sign I would ever get a salad for minutes through several orders and they were not busy. I find that unacceptable. Mentioned to cashier both times on the way out to eat somewhere else.

Great food, great service and fantastic prices! Convenient to the Metra and Chicago Board of Trade. Definitely worth a try.

Our office catered Alonti for breakfast and lunch. Overall, it was good; definitely better than the catering we had from another company the day prior. We had breakfast burritos and fruit one day; french toast, bacon, and fruit the next. The burritos were good, I had one with just eggs, cheese, and potato. The food was still fresh and hot when we ate. My only complaint about the burritos is that they weren't clearly marked. Was that squiggle mark a "B"? If so, does that mean beans? Beef? I decided on the one marked "C" which could have been chicken, but I think it was actually a "V" for vegetarian. As for that "B," I found out the next day that it means bacon! The French toast was really good. Again, we got another breakfast that was delivered fresh and hot. Everyone raved about how good this was. The fruit was all fresh, but the pineapple was a little too fresh. It was not ripe, which made for some hard bites and bitter flavor. For lunch we had cute little boxed lunches with sandwiches, chips, and a cookie. The roast chicken sandwich was really good, and how thoughtful of them to pack a billion condiments in there - two kinds of mustard? Boy do I feel special. And an Andes mint too! All of the foot we had from Alonti was consistently good. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to cater to a large group.

Grabbed the Monterey and it tasted pretty good. Definitely included a bunch of avocado so they don't short change you anywhere. I'm still slightly hungry after one sandwich but it's a decent portion size, especially for the quality. I'll probably be getting a pressed sandwich next time or the Big Al's and ask for it pressed.

Yuck, unless you like more fat on your bacon than actual bacon, mayo slathered on everything, grease upon grease, or are simply looking to clog your arteries. I will say, though, the staff are really nice, but even they can't make up for the poor quality of food.

I had an internship in the city this past fall. One of the best parts of my 2 hour commute was getting a bagel with cream cheese from Alonti. Omg words can hardly describe these amazing treasures. They are so fresh and soft. I couldn't have gotten through my (unpaid) internship with out them. It was such a great way to start my day: the colors in the cafe are so warm, the music is classic feel good oldies, and the people that work there are sooo nice. They have regulars too which is nice. The coffee is just typical brewed coffee but they have the flavor pumps so you can customize your coffee. I love this place. I will miss this place. If you are a sad city commuter you will probably love this place too. Note: I am writing this review after my internship bc I was afraid to show up at Alonti and see that they were sold out of jalapeño bagels. THAT'S HOW GOOD THEY ARE.

Pretty good breakfast sandwich--egg, bacon, cheddar cheese on a tasty sesame bagel. Good coffee, too. Not sure that the somewhat loud hiphop is appropriate for 10 am, but it wasn't unpleasant.

I have eaten here many times over the years. Either for breakfast (breakfast special) or a sandwich (cali club) for lunch. Food is fresh and the staff are friendly.

Went in with a friend at 1:45 PM last Friday to grab a bite before heading to Lollapalooza - should have kept walking. The deli was strangely deserted for mid-afternoon - turns out the place closes at 2 PM. Guess that's normal for downtown places that cater to the lunch crowd. However, considering the storefront window said "STORE HOURS: " without actually listing any times, we were unaware of this. Staff was nice enough upon entering - the man behind the counter promised us Fernando would take our order whenever we were ready. A more correct statement would have been "Fernando will misinterpret your order half a dozen times before you give up and settle for something half-similar to what you wanted." I asked for turkey on jalapeno cornbread - they were out of the bread. Looking back, I guess that's not surprising given the proximity to closing time. I chose rye instead. While Fernando was toasting my bread, I asked for whole grain mustard (which was clearly listed as a choice on the menu). He asked if I meant yellow mustard. I said whole grain. He again said, "yellow mustard?" I gave up and went with yellow mustard. I then asked for lettuce and red onion. He took a sandwich that had been made BEFORE I WALKED IN, removed the lettuce and TOMATO, and put them on my sandwich. I said, "no, I want lettuce and red onion. No tomato." He looked confused and added red onion on top. I then repeated my "no tomato" request. He pulled the tomato off of my sandwich (which, let me remind you, had come from a sandwich that had ALREADY BEEN PREPARED BEFORE I WALKED IN and was sitting out on the counter when I did order), leaving globs of tomato innards on my lettuce. I finally had to say that I was allergic to tomatoes and that I needed a fresh piece of lettuce in order for him to give me a leaf that hadn't been sitting on somebody else's sandwich for God knows how long. After the lettuce fiasco, I thought I was in the clear - wrong. Fernando then took the ham and Swiss off of the previously-prepared sandwich and put it on mine. I told him that I had ordered turkey. He asked me if I was sure. Once I finally got a sandwich, the rest of my meal went smoothly. The chips/sandwich/drink special is a pretty good deal - if only the service had been competent and not bordering on unsanitary. Good thing I'm not downtown much. Also, there were an absurd number of mosquitos inside the restaurant - I realize that bugs are a problem in the summer, but I don't expect to get a fresh crop of welts during the middle of my meal.

I would avoid this place the the plague. They used to care about their food, but the last two times I've been there I ordered the chicken marinara and afterward I vowed never to return. The pasta was overcooked and the chicken was cold. I've been there several times and had varying degrees of food quality. Some days it's been great, but recently it's been terrible. I've had enough. DO NOT waste your money here. Even McDonald's is better.

Good, used to be much better. I would eat lunch at Alonti every single day back in 2000 when I was working a contract job in the loop. My noontime meal would consist of their bowtie pasta with chicken tequila sauce and a slab of garlic bread. This veritable feast would carry me through the rest of the day and usually didn't give me any sort of trouble so imagine my surprise when I started working in the loop again and returned to Alonti for lunch. The chicken tequila sauce, once a velvety mix of peppers, chicken, cream and spices is now watery and bland. The punchline to a bad joke consisting of overcooked paste and undercooked garlic bread. It's like turning on your television to watch Wheel of Fortune only to discover they replaced Pat Sajak with Christen Slater, Vanna White with Victoria Jackson. The wheel's still there but it's not the same. Hit up Alonti if the line at Cosi is too long, otherwise it's just not worth the time, money or heartache.

The Monterey Chicken sandwich is awesome. Perfectly ripe avocados tasty jalapeno mayo your choice of bread. The Veggie sandwich on foccia is also great. The perfect loop lunch spot that is overlooked and over shadowed by the Corner Bakery's, Cosi's of this city.

My favorite thing about this place is the hot bar. It is great if you are any sort of diet because portion control is completely in your hands. Every Friday is fish. The dishes range in quality and at worst are ok. Its great.
