First time at the restaurant, friendly and attentive staff. Ordered meatloaf, mash potatoes and corn - meatloaf was delicious, comes with either or without gravy. My finance had the same item with macaroni n cheese which was good too. His nephew had chicken rice and gravy which looks yummy too! Great place would definitely come back !

There phone does not work, and the atmosphere is the ok at best. But where is lacks, it makes up for tenfold in the authenticity of the food. The only thing I didn't like was the peach cobbler but that's only because my moms is better

The food was good but this restaurant is fraudulent!!!! I was charged twice on two occasions for one meal. This restaurant secretly has two different names "6978 soul food " AND "IBT Food Enterprise " they ran a quick scheme on me and several others in my party by charging me from both names.. thank God for bank statements ---the authorities were notified as well as my banking and their restaurant Management - YOU GUYS SUCK FOR THAT - STEALING MY TIME AND MONEY....

I'd heard nothing but good things about this place and after literally being prodded my Mother, who insist I have a hot meal instead of choking down more Hooters, I decided to go ahead and give the place a shot. Going on a Sunday, it was crowded, of course. The church families (Glorayyy!) and whatnot have the place packed. Because of that, I decided to get my grub to go. Everyday there is a different menu so the options I chose for Sunday were: baked chicken, dressing, string beans, and mac n' cheese. Desert also comes with a meal - I went with banana pudding. The waitress (didnt get her name) was a bit impatient and had no desire to actually display true customer service, which I particularly didnt care for. She literally was being vocal about us hurrying to pick something. I inquired as to how spicy their jerk chicken was, since some places dont make it so hot that your nose is running or give you the option of jerk sauce on the side, and her response was - "Yes, its very hot. What do you think? Its jerk chicken." *blank stare* Okay, lady. Anywho, overall the food was good. Peeked at the drink menu and a top shelf long island is $18.....not sure what thats all about. Some nights they close early if business is slow and do not look for absolute professionalism if you decide to call and they answer.

6978 Soul Food has scrumptious, home-style food. I thought it was delicious the first time when I went with my family. My opinion continued through my second visit with a chef friend of mine. He agreed that the food was good and commented that it is exactly what would be served if you visited a southern home. Well, except that the desserts come in styrofoam containers as if they'd been made earlier, packaged, and refrigerated. 6978 Soul Food serves up large quantities for each meal. You get a meat entree, three sides, and a dessert for a meal so come hungry! I really like the fried fish fillets during my first visit. The jerk chicken was a bit too spicy for me but still good! It's hard to comment on the atmosphere of 6978 Soul Food because it's a bit awkward. The space is large. There's a sizable bar, a dining room, and then a back party room. It's nicely decorated and there are table cloths. There are also televisions. What makes it awkward is that it's too big to feel homey or comfortable. The employees working at 6978 Soul Food seem to all be related to one another. In fact, two of the servers are identical twins! One of them is boisterous and the other one is subdued so it's easy to tell them apart. Nobody said anything unfriendly, but it was hard to feel welcomed (except by the lively twin). That kind of contributed to the awkward feeling. Nobody behaved in a manner standard to the restaurant industry. I was frustrated when trying to figure out their hours of operation. I haven't been able to find a website or hours on Groupon or Yelp. I called and got a busy signal. I saw an article (when looking for their hours) that said that 6978 Soul Food hosts stepping nights and other events. It's a fabulous idea and I'd like to know more about it.

I went today and I must say I am disappointed with the service! I had to ask to be seated when I first walked in! I had to find the server to take my order! The food was decent but I did not like the greens! I would say they need to step up their customer service!

Good chicken and good fish . but the side dishes have really went to the dogs.the banana pudding tasted like condensed milk with cookies

If Larry isn't your server,,don't bother..those twins suck they definitely deserve a demotion ...cold food, long waits ,15minutes or longer to receive check & my dessert looked like someone had eaten half. I've often spoke highly of this place & referred others..please please please get it together 6978..let Larry train the twins thoroughly if your not going to can them..

Just visited here with a friend because we had heard good things about their food. We also had a groupon so we purchased that prior to our visit. As I had read in other reviews, all were accurate in stating that this place is not intimate, it looks like a bar with a dance floor that they decided to put tables on. It was also very hot and no air conditioning was on which was odd to us. The Mac, greens, and yams were delicious, but not hot! The smothered chicken, which both my friend and I had was not impressive....bland and dry! The wait staff was slow and wasn't very inviting or friendly. I will not be coming back here again. I'd rather go to chicken and waffles up the street on Madison and Harlem! At least they are more personable and the food is always yummy and hot!

Why is it that this restaurant had no soda yesterday not to mention there were no other accommodations because if it. Your choices were water or sweet tea but I seen a deliveryman deliver juice and liquor for the bar. What the heck! The food this time was mediocre at best, so much so that my husband wanted to leave and go to Priscilla's. I ordered the catfish again the portion was very small, candied yams (my daughter loved them), turkey greens, red beans and rice that were lukewarm. My husband had smothered pork chops, string beans w/ potatoes from a can, and mac & cheese was hot just not good. He finished his food but didn't ask for extra servings (that means it was not good). At "the other place" he usually gets two entrée meals there. My daughter had tasteless spaghetti with more water than sauce (her dad just let her play in the pasta) and a leg of smothered chicken. On a personal note to the owner your employees should have uniforms. Walking around in flip-flops is just unacceptable, as well as dirty colorful sneakers. Their clothes were not cool either. Just a suggestion to you for your future patrons. Unfortunately for you, I will not be returning.

I had to get up this morning and write a review for this sad place. This was my second vist to this resturant, the first and last time was on a Sunday no problem. HOWEVER, LAST NIGHT WAS SAD, to say the least. We had party of about 13, the waitress took our order no problem, the problem came after that. It took 20 minutes for our food to arrive. Then the waitress had no ideal who had what, she had the dumb look on her face and then took the food back. One of the other waitress ask her was that her handwriting she said yes but could not figure it out. So she start passing the food out saying "who had what". Come to find out all the waitress just throw the order tickets on the counter and the cooks had no ideal who orders was who. The mac and cheese was cold and just a box of Kraft. I did enjoy the collard greens, yams and the catfish. We had to ask for silverware all 13 of us There was a waitress eating on the floor, I mean a full dinner and taking orders, allegedly they close at 8:00pm, we left at 9:30pm and people were still coming in. She brought ONE, I MEAN ONE small pitcher of water fo 13 people and a stack of small clear plastic cups, if you order from the bar you get a glass (WOW, go figure), the dessert (a joke) served in styrofoam containers, is that telling your customers go home, presentation is key in serving a meal you start eating with your eyes, this food was just throw on the plate which made me wonder was I welcome, the portions varied from plate to plate. This waitress was over whelmed, she never came back to our table. GIRL KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT YOUR HAIR, YOU SERVE FOOOD!!! I may go back, but on a slow night. I hope the owner takes heed to everyone's comments and take a hard look at their business, remove the owners cap and put the customer cap on for a day. Ask yourself what do I look for when I eat out? Talk to you customers (not your regulars) but that new customer.

Ate here the other week with family and the food was very good. I had the catfish and it was delicious as were the greens. I thought the candied yams were a bit too sweet but other than that I enjoyed my meal. The service was a bit slow but friendly. I would definitely go back.

  • Kimberly D.

way too hot to cook so this is my go to place! I've had the catfish, loved it I've also had the smothered pork chops they are good too although not my favorite. the side dishes the candied yams are a little too sweet for my taste but still good and the mac & cheese is too dry for me. I love the dressing and gravy! Nothing beats home cooking but this is the next best thing! Hope they stick around!!!

Went on a Groupon, would not have gone otherwise ... and was pleasantly surprised. They make what they make (pretty much soul food staples like greens, and fried chicken and yams and fried catfish. We had all of that, as eel as jerk chicken at our table, and it was all very very good. Entre's come with choice of two sides and not sure if it was the group on or not, but also desert. Service is friendly and fast, food is really good, I would definitely go back and if you have not tried yet, you should check it out.

I love the the fried chicken, catfish, macaroni and cheese, green beans, corn, and yams! It really is good soul food. I've been twice and have not been disappointed in the quality of the food nor the service. Our waitresses typically get our orders correct and when they don't - they let you keep the incorrect item and simply bring out the correct one (more food...yum!). The prices are super reasonable, your food comes very quickly, and the ambiance of the restaurant is great with the smooth grooves playing in the background. I wish I lived closer so I could go more often.

I had heard about this place and I saw it on Groupon. Two separate meals for two people: entree, three sides, dessert AND a drink for $14.99!!! What!! The food was the bomb.com . ALL of it!! I had 2 fried catfish fillets, mac n cheese, yams , dressing , and banana pudding. My daughter had fried chicken, greens, rice with gravy and mac n cheese. It was smack your mama good!! Lol . Will go back soon.

I had to go back for a 'second helping' and again, enjoyed my choices and the overall experience. The sweet server remembered me and she was very attentive to my guest and I ... I also noticed that even at 2:30, mid afternoon there was a steady flow of diners, unlike many restaurants that are near empty at that hour...that speaks for itself!

  • Liz H.

Groupon stated two meals for $15.00 but the menu stated the meals were $12.99. Asked the server - inept answer. I got the jerk chicken wing and breast. My boyfriend called it an A cup. It was dry but flavorful. My boyfriend got the dark fried chicken - no complaints. The sides and desserts were good. We both decided we would go to Chicken and Waffles before we would come here again.

Still doing well and turning-out good food. I was sad that when we came in they didn't have the turkey that was listed (and we were there early for lunch, so they must not have made it yet) but I got the smothered chicken and was happy with that choice. Sides are hit or miss - the cornbread is dry, the mac is dry (but I like it that way rather than gooey) and the vegetables are obviously from a can (yams, corn, etc). This time I stuck with the Banana pudding and was glad I did - so yummy. Husband got the fried chicken and liked it too. Happy this place is doing well as we need options in the neighborhood that are different and reasonable!

This is definely the best soul food I've had in some time. I was shocked that this amazing restaurant has been in our area for 3 years and I only heard about it once (about 3 months ago) from a a friend at church. With food this good, the recommendations should be sounding the clarion call throughout not only only the Westside of Chicago but most definitely in the near Western burbs as well! I am sure Oak Park residents have not heard of how wonderful this soul food is and that is a real shame because the propeiter stands to corner the soul food market in the village. On the downside, they need to work on giving their waitresses more professional polish because even though she was very pretty and nice she lacked the outgoing personality needed to encourage customers to want to come back. The restaurant was a little gloomy but very clean BUT the great food outweighed any negative feelings I might have had about anything that wasn't exactly perfect. I simply cannot wait to return and eat this food because it closer to my mothers cooking than any other I've tasted since the days of the Chicago south side H & H restaurant.

I went there with out of town guests. I loed it. They loved it. People around me loved it. People were very nice. Place was clean. I think Granny is in the kitchen concocting fantastic dishes and magically transporting them from Mississippi onto plates. I have been back several times since. The food quality is consistently great!

This restaurant is a hot mess. I have been to this restaurant three times. Each time the experience gets worse. The only reason I came back is because it's a black own business and I wanted to show my support. As I will continue to do. The first time my experience was ok. The second time we were seated and then it took 10-15 minutes for someone wearing an Everest school uniform to ask us what we were having. It took another 30 minutes for our food to come out. The woman who took our order never looked at me at all. She took my order looking down. My chicken was cold, but the gravy was lukewarm. Lmao, which made it all ok. The 3rd time I visited this very unprofessional establishment, I was there with a party of 8. We had to seat ourselves this time around . We waited over 20 minutes before someone asked to help us. Between that time my father asked two different young ladies if someone could help us and no one ever came. Before someone came to our table, other people who came in after us, were seated and placing their orders before us. I couldn't believe it. We eventually had to just walk out with the rest of the dignity we had left. I will never return to this restaurant and if I were you, I wouldn't go anywhere near this awful place. The food is just ok. It's not worth getting treated like shit.

Good food... BUT, horrible service!! I try to support black owned businesses, but this place will never see a dime of my money again. The first time I went we waited and waited and waited, even seen parties that came after us with no reservation being waited on. They are very rude and unprofessional. Second time, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. Waited, waited, waited, mind you both times I visited there was not that many people there, plenty of empty tables. We were finally seated.....and that's it. For 40 mins we sat there, no water, no menus, no introduction from a waitress, nothing! We managed to scrape up a menu, and told two wandering waitresses that we were ready to order, their reply, "Aight" then walked off. Never again!! We finally just walked out. Went to another restaurant where we were seated by a friendly host with water and menus. Take your money elsewhere!!!!

Dined here tonight with the family and our Groupon. The location is great for us, as my office is across the street, and we live a few blocks away. I will point out that this is a busy stretch of North Ave., so it is important to park on the Chicago side of the street, so you do not have to risk your safety crossing the street. The highlight of the night was the FOOD. The fried chicken, catfish, yams, lima beans, peach cobbler...all were fantastic. The yams were super flavorful and the best I have ever had. Yummm. The two misses for me were the mac and cheese (boo), as it was not very creamy, and the cornbread muffin, which was a bit bland for me. Before ordering, I asked the server what she recommended, and her face lit up immediately. She was clearly passionate about the food and had trouble recommending just one thing. I can see why, as the food was super tasty. The dining room was fine. Not overly intimate or comfortable. Basically a big space. I wish it was a bit more inviting..... Cannot wait to try some other offerings..

I heard a lot of good things about this place, but it didn't live up to those expectations. I went during the week and maybe that was a mistake. It seemed as if the food they gave us was left overs from previous days. I Had the macaroni and cheese and it was extremely dry and over cooked, the dressing was ok, the jerk chicken was ok, and the greens taste similar to canned greens. The corn muffin was hard and stuck to the muffin paper so when I took it out half of it was still in the bottom of the wrapper, and it lacked flavor taste more like baked cornmeal. My son had rice with his meal and it was ok, could've used some butter or something. My mother received a cup of water that taste like someone poured sprite in it and poured it out and refilled it with water. When we walked in it is a nice place but they lack customer service we stood there with the workers looking at us for a minute like we foreign objects. The service was mediocre. I had one of the twins as a server and she seemed a little uninterested. The other two servers seemed very attentive to their guests. Overall if I didn't have the groupon I wouldn't have eaten there. I don't know if it was the day we went or what, maybe we will purchase another groupon and go on a later day in the week maybe the food will be a lot fresher, but at this point I would not pay money to eat there again.

I happened to come here on a Sunday afternoon which is typically their busiest times with patrons coming in to eat after church, so I had to wait for seating. Fortunately, they have a full service bar where you can sit and drink, where you will forget about the time that you're waiting for a table. The drinks are very reasonable, so you don't fill like you're breaking the bank before you eat. I ordered the smothered pork chops, greens and Mac and cheese which was absolutely delicious. You are served nice size portions, so you get your money's worth. Finally I had the banana pudding for dessert and although I am partial to my mom's version, I rate them a close 2nd. I would definitely return here for my soul food fix, but later in the week for sure!

Been here twice. Both times the food was good!! The fried catfish is ok nothing special. The chicken is the same. The money makers for this place are the side items. The sweet potatoes were amazing! The dressing is on point and the mac and cheese is cheesy and delicious!!

Y'all that catfish.....YASSSSSSSS Its so fresh. I met my meet-up group here for our monthly social, albeit was a big group. The service was slow - I think the little girl who was our waitress got overwhelmed. They were pleasant and accommodating though....they comp or deducted a small portion from our bills. Very easy to locate, great parking options and clean bathroom. I also had mac and cheese.....it was the bomb diggity as well as the fried chicken. I would definitely go back there.

I bought a Groupon for this restaurant so I could take my daughter out for her birthday. We had not been here previously. There were to be 5 in our little party, but the fifth one was late due to a flat tire. We were seated and sat, and talked, and sat, talked more, while we were waiting to be waited on. We must have miscommunicated to the staff. They thought we wanted to wait for our fifth person. We were not. Finally, we got their attention, and while we were ordering our fifth walked in. Good timing. The restaurant has a different menu for each day. It was Tuesday so we ordered from that menu. There was catfish, smothered chicken, pork chops, fried chicken, jerk chicken, yams, greens, dressing, mac & cheese, and a few other items to choose from. We each got to choose a meat, 3 sides, dessert, corn bread or roll, and a drink. The food was absolutely delicious. The service was fun. Our server had just arrived at the restaurant from school. She is vibrant and very engaging in conversation. The restaurant is family owned and run. We will be back. The TVs are annoying and distracting.

If I could give this restaurant 0 stars I would. I was really excited to try this place, I heard the food was really good. To start we weren't greeted at the door. We had to find someone to let them know how many were in our party. We were seated, the young lady that seated us then proceeded to locate a waitress that would take our table after speaking with 3 different waitresses she found someone. While waiting for the waitress, my sister went to the restroom and came back to say how there wasn't any tissue nor napkins in the restroom. I just thought it was a busy day (mother's day weekend) I suggested she let someone know that the restroom needed attention. After about 30 minutes of sitting our orders were taken. Alcoholic beverages could not be ordered with your food order the waitress stated we would have to go to the bar and place our orders. While taking my sister's order another waitress came up to our waitress and just interrupted. Note: we were slightly annoyed at this point but I didn't want to give up on the restaurant just yet, so I convinced my family to stay. BIG MISTAKE! After about 45 minutes to an hour we start wondering??? okay where is our food. The waitress had come and placed the food tray at our table, but no food was delivered. The original lady that seated us came by asking had we gotten our food yet? Now at this point everyone in my family was getting up to leave. The lady started offering a discount stating our food was on it's way out. We seat there about 2 minutes, until this other women comes out the back with this dirty white tshirt on and says........We don't have the food you ordered. We ran out of certain items and they were trying to figure out how to accommodate us. How to accommodate us REALLY! After the horrible service the unsanitary attire of the workers and the restroom. I think I heard her try to blame us for the fact that we got to the restaurant at 715pm and they close at 8. Needless to say giving this restaurant a star is being kind. I hope the owner reads these reviews, I thought our experience was so horrible we were apart of some type of reality show ~ Restaurant Horrors!

I love it! Delicious food, friendly service. Smothered chicken, catfish and yams, my fav. Mac n cheese, yummy. The only complaint is the cornbread is forgettable¿ Good portions, my family is curious why I love it so much. Try it..

OMG! Thank you Groupon for introducing me to the fabulousness that is 6978 Soul Food. I would go way out of my way to come back here! I thought they were a little pricey, but for the portion that you get, it was way worth the money. I got the catfish (sooooo crispy), the macaroni and cheese (gooooooeeey, cheeeesy, and damn near sinful), the dressing (I actually stole the dressing from my husband because it comes with a side of cranberry sauce.... how did they know I love cranberry sauce with my dressing???), the yams (the yams left me speechless with their smooth, sweet, deliciousness), and the collard greens (perfectly seasoned..... 'nuff said). My husband had the smothered chicken and my daughter had the smothered pork chops, which both seemed a little messy to eat, but the flavor was completely worth the embarrassment of coming up saucy. The atmosphere of the place is beautiful! Seems like they would be great for parties. Full bar here too! I wasn't in a drinking mood when I came, but next time I'll be sure to bring my thirst as well as my hunger.

I went here during lunch. This was my first time eating here. The food was very tasty and filling. I saw a Groupon and decided to get it because I have been wanting to try this place for awhile. I will definitely be back. I have ate at a lot of Soul Food restaurants in the Chicago land area and I would say this is by far one of the better ones. I had smothered chicken, mac and cheese, green and dressing (With the Groupon you get three sides with the meal) I shared some of the sides with a friend and we both enjoyed them. My friends had jerk chicken and fried chicken.

Overall I was enjoyed everything from the Long Island to the Red Beans and Rice. The Jerk Chicken is really spicy but sweet also. The Mac And Cheese was so horrible, it was not cheesy whatsoever. It looked nothing like a couple of the pics I seen on here. I was pleased tho will be going back hopefully if I give the Mac and cheese another try it will look like it does on here and actually be cheesy.

Looking at my receipt now and noting the servers name was Maetaija. Wow, Maetaija either really dislikes people, or possibly White folk. Dont really care which, cause we'll never go back to 6978. She took our order with disgust, never brought our drinks, took forever, shoved our plates at us, and let us know CLEARLY white folk not welcome here. Something tells me the owner of 6978 might not appreciate her attitude, especially since the restaurant sits smack dab in the middle of a VERY mixed area. Food was OK, but I'll never refer 6978 nor go back.

This restaurant is nice, clean and cozy. The service I received was phenomenal. I wish I knew my waitress name. The facility was busy but her service never wavered. I had the T-Bone steak and potato. The food was served swiftly and was great! The only reason I didn't not give this place 5 stars is because for soul food, it's a bit pricey. $14.99 for two pieces of catfish is up there. But the side dishes are reasonable. Other than that, great place.

You know growing up when everyone thought THEIR mom was the best cook, and then you go to your friend's house and you're looking around like, "really?!?" That's how I felt eating at 6978 Soul Food. My partner and I felt pretty gross after eating here. We each ordered the combo that comes with three sides, a drink, and dessert for $12.99. I had the jerk chicken, he had the smothered pork chops, and we each got our own sides of greens & mac n cheese with the black eyed peas and candied yams being our third sides. It's no wonder many reviews mention the dry dressing because my corn muffin was super dry and bland. Everything we ate was either way too salty or way too sweet. Candied yams were oozing syrup in a not good way. I could see the sodium floating in the broth of my greens. The mac and cheese was probably the most desirable item on my plate. The black eyed peas were also solid. My jerk chicken was super tender and falling right off the bone, which was pleasant, but the jerk flavor was lacking and it wasn't very spicy. My partner said his pork chops were more smothered in salt than anything. I ordered the sweet tea as my free beverage just to see if it was as disgusting as previous reviewers mentioned. I mean really, how can sweet tea be disgusting? I don't know but apparently 6978 Soul Food does. I had like two sips and stuck with water for the rest of my meal. Also, the food clearly sits in those tin pans over hot water all day because it literally came out within five minutes of ordering. Not appealing whatsoever. The only reasons we came here instead of My Mother's Kitchen were because: 1. They were open an extra hour on Sunday 2. We needed to find out how you could have two soul food restaurants within 2 blocks on the same street 3. Sometimes we're just random. Needless to say, next time we'll be sure to eat an hour earlier so we can get our soul food cooked to order by someone's mom who can actually cook.

Not a fan, I went there one Sunday afternoon, service was to laid back (slow) the food was lukewarm not hot, as if it was warmed up. I had smothered chicken with rice, but there was no gravey, just grease. I really should have just left, but I heard a lot of good things about this place. Unfortunately my exspirence wasn't the same. I've tasted better and fresher tasting Soul food.

My first visit to 6978 was good and the place was nice so I decided to make a second visit. BIG MISTAKE. My boyfriend and I went on a Sunday night and were very disappointed. The bottom line: We ended up disputing the bill and the staff was extremely unprofessional. Upon walking in we were not greeted and a group of waiters were huddled by the bar just staring. After being seated, a waiter came by and took the condiments from our table to give to another customer, never mind the 15 empty tables he could have taken them from. Not a big deal. We waited 30 minutes for our food. Our waitress offered us drinks (margaritas) on the house for the long wait. When the food came out they didn't have all the sides we ordered and no rolls, bread, etc. Still not a big deal. The waitress stopped by to check on us and we made conversation with her. She was very friendly. The cashier/bartender (Javonda) was very rude, calling her from across the room telling her to stop socializing. The entire time we ate, the staff was loud, laughing, and holding conversations that could have waited for the doors to close. At one point, one of the waiters yelled at kids from another table telling them to get away from a hot coffee machine because if they got burned, the restaurant would be sued. When we got the bill, we saw that we were charged for the margaritas, lemonades we never got, and desserts/rolls that they didn't have that were factored into the price. In the end, the cashier/bartender was rude and took $8 off the bill (this barely covered the lemonades, desserts, and sides we didn't get) and they made us pay for the margaritas. The waiter, Akeena, was good but everyone else was unprofessional and needs lessons in customer service. I WILL NEVER GO BACK.

I have been to 6978 3 times...the best service was the very first time I came..we were served by the previous owner...who usually sits by the bar. She gave the best service out of all of those ladies that work there. Now...the food..is pretty good...catfish smothered chicken...I love their greens! But their red beans and rice is the best thing...it's so balanced and flavorful. I love it. The service here needs alot of work though, but their food is pretty good if you need a soul food fix. Priscilla's is still the best.

Everything is delicious, I was very impressed! Also, my mom and daughter, whom are very hard to please, we're very satisfied. Between us, we had red beans and rice, yams, catfish, pot roast, smothered chicken, macaroni and dressing. Every last food item we had was seasoned well and cooked just right, kudos to them. It is highly unusual that you find a restaurant were everything is good. The restrooms were immaculate, that's very important to me. I feel the restrooms are a reflection of sanitation practices, thumbs up on that. On the contrary we really didn't care for the dessert, although the peach cobbler was better than the banana pudding.

The customer service is horrible. We walked in the door Saturday night, the host was no where in sight and the bartender just looked at us like he was retarded. The host got up off her butt after sitting at the bar for 5 mins talking to the old loud drunks. The tables, plates and silverware all look like they were donated by a local church. smh "CHEAP". Our waitress was really sweet she was the older lady with a soft voice. The young waitresses all walked around looking depressed and strung out on something. There were candles on every table yet know one decided to walk around and light the ones at the tables when guest were seated. "LAZY". I ordered the Jerk Chicken "Bad Move" worst jerk I've ever had. It was dried out and sauce tasted very bitter. The macaroni and cheese was horrible and damn near cold. The sweet tea taste like straight faucet water full of sediment. I would pass on that. The only thing I enjoyed on my plate was the yams & greens which by the way were the only "HOT" items on my plate. I honestly believe whoever opened this place lacks serious hospitality/management skills. Employees need to be retrained and food needs to be made fresh to order not sitting on hot trays for hours. I will never return or give these idiots anymore of my business. Thank god I used a groupon on this place because I would have been demanding them to pay me to eat that crap. Half of these reviewers that give positive reviews are most likely family and friends or the old drunks sitting at the bar. So their gonna boost the hype but when you arrive you'll see what really goes on.

I'm struggling to keep from giving this place 2 stars... If you've read any of my posts, then you know I'm tough, but honest...brutally honest! 6978 is more like a 1978 modern-day juke joint! When my guest and I walked into the establishment, we were greeted by a woman sitting at the bar who yells over..."may I help you?" - Yes, you can help me...you can help me by getting up from that bar stool and walking over to your dining guest and greet them properly? - Or how about, serving me in a reasonable time when seated? - Maybe...removing the dirty dinnerware collection from the dining area? - If it's not too much to ask...can you get my order right? - Lastly, if I ask for something and you don't feel like going back to get it...just tell me, don't lie and tell me you're out of it, only for me to see a waiter server the same item to another guest...busted! Pros: OK soul food (don't let your grandmother be the judge), staff was friendly & uhhh...you can eat if you're hungry (maybe that's why the dressing was so good to me?) and my guest said the Catfish was great! Cons: slow & unprofessional service, cold food, dry baked chicken, bland lemonade, flat soda (at least for us; the staff's kid was walking around with more bubbles in her Pepsi than a washing machine full of Tide!) Like I said...brutal, but honest and "yep...I'm gonna Yelp about it!"

6978 is a good soul food place near Oak Park (Located in Galewood Area of Chicago). I tried out this Soul Food place and was surprised... -- (Pro) The menu and pricing ($10 for entree and two sides). The Fried Chicken was not over cooked and tasty and Short Ribs were juicy. The restaurant looks dated (stuck in 80's classy decor) but nice. -- (Cons)The Cornbread dressing was a little dry and the greens was missing some favor. The restaurant looks dated (stuck in 80's classy decor) but nice. Bottom-line: Its not Priscilla's or MacArthur's but the potential is there for 6978 to be better then both.

The food wasn't that bad but the service was atrocious. It took much too long for our server to take our order. Then she brought drinks to another table, first, that had been seated long after we arrived. We had to remind her about our drinks. Another server came over to take our drink order and we told her we had been taken care of already. She asked if we were served by the girl with the "big head"? That wasn't very professional at all. Lastly, the servers do not know how to actually carry and serve the food. They carried the trays in front of them at waist level and then instead of maneuvering so she could serve the three of us separately she handed us our plates. Just terrible. Oh, and the banana pudding was insulting to come from a soul food restaurant. I wouldn't even remotely call that banana pudding. There were no bananas. No homemade custard and no meringue. It was cold grayish looking "pudding", most likely instant, with vanilla wafers.

OOOOOHHHWEEEEE Soul Food does not get better than this!!! I tried the other soul food place on North Ave & it was nassstaaaay, I was hesitant to try 6978 but damn is this good food. Me & my date had the baked chicken and macaroni and cheese for lunch. The baked chicken fell off the bone and was marinated and seasoned throughout-even though it was white meat, very impressed! The chicken was seasoned well, and had so many flavors. The macaroni and cheese was super cheesey and delicious! For dessert, we had the peach cobbler and the banana pudding. Both were excellent! So good!!!! This is REAL SOUTHERN HOME COOKING. Absolutely delicious and the foods not expensive. There is plenty of parking along the street; metered and a pay box area. The staff was very friendly and the chef came out himself as well. The decor was excellent, definitely a first rate type of place. Very classy, clean, and nicely decorated. Has a very homey feel. They also have stepping classes and stepping certain nights, sounds fun! DELICIOUS and PERFECT! Yummy in my tummy. My tummy is happy today! :D I will be back soon!

Well appointed and clean...Our server was a perky young girl who was attentive without being cloying...and knew the menu forward and backward and answered all our questions with panache. Now for the best...the food was plentiful and without hesitation the best "Soul Food" I have ever had!! I chose the smothered pork chops, mac and cheese and collard greens from a wide variety of items on their daily menu...WOW! The servings are plentiful, but not so much that, if you are hungry, can't be finished in one sitting. This may be because there are no appetizers, salads or bread baskets available before you get to the entrees and sides. Everything was done to perfection...peach cobbler as I like it with an underdone crust... beverages included in the fixed price...Senior discount! Small minuses.. a fire place that should have been working during the 68th polar vortex of the winter...street parking could be better...Overall a phenomenal experience...gastronomically speaking!!

I was driving home and spotted this place and noticed that it said soul food and also "Open".... So, I turned my car around and decided to try them out. I walked in and was surprised at the spacious, upscale dining area. There is also a full bar with flat-screens to give a sports bar effect. It is great for dining in, dinner parties, a romantic date, etc. I chose carry-out. The owner and staff were very friendly and the food was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! The menu is simple: You get One Entree and Two sides for $9.99 or One Entree, Three sides, One Dessert, and One drink(non-alcoholic) for $12.99. I ordered the Smother Pork Chop, Greens, Dressing, Macaroni, Banana Pudding, and a Sweet tea and not only did it fill me up, I enjoyed every bite. Thank you to the owner Tina for giving me a spot closer to home to dine in or carry out when I want a choice of a home cooked meal without the hassle of preparing it myself. Lol. I will return again and again and again!

We tried 6978 today and we loved the food. It was slower than I expected for business when we initially walked in but slowly people trinkled in and out for food. The experience was very personal as the owners both served us. If you are looking for a soul food fix this is a great place. The only downside to the restaurant that we saw was that the service was a little slow. However, sometimes you have a to wait a little for good food. Get the red beans and rice. They stood out as some of the best I recall having. I grew up in the south and I know good soul food. They also have a full bar which is slightly rare for many soul food places. I also appreciated that it was not just buffet/cafeteria style as most are.

One of my favorite places for food and drink. The decor is first class, food is like, "Sunday after church in a black old school household!" The clientele is well dressed and fun.Do drive by on North ave and stop.
