Beall Mansion An Elegant Bed & Breakfast Inn

I love B&Bs. I'm a total B&B junkie. I prefer B&Bs to standard hotels. A B&B with a historical past? I'm IN. So when it came time for my boyfriend and I to visit his parents in Alton, IL, I immediately went on the hunt for a B&B near to where they lived. I stumbled upon the listing for the Beall Mansion on the B&B search site bedandbreakfast.com and instantly fell in love. Historic background? Check! Let me just say my boyfriend and I were simply overwhelmed when we arrived. The quaint beauty of the place is inspiring and so romantic. We actually whispered a "holy ****" to each other when walking through the home's entry hall. We stayed in the home's Mary Harris room which consisted of a huge queen sized canopy bed that we felt lost in (in the good way) and a whirlpool tub in the bathroom. The room amenities (shampoo and conditioner, water bottle, towels, blankets, wifi, bath salts) made us feel comfortable and right at home. Downstairs, the attention to the smallest detail continued with the home's decor down to the chocolate buffet table and the never ending supply of gourmet teas (a HUGE plus in my book) in the dining room, and the brandy decanter in the music room. In the library sat two photo albums filled with photos from the restoration of the home, and it's evident that owners Jim and Sandy put a lot of love into the home. That love is felt throughout and adds to the overall ambiance of the place. Being the picky vegan that I am automatically places me in the diva guest list, even though I'm actually not that difficult. We were sent an email long before we arrived asking us for any dietary needs/restrictions/allergies, and therefore Jim and Sandy were kind enough to provide me with almond milk even though it was difficult to find in those parts. They apologized for not having a larger selection for me, but I did not find anything to complain about. I was able to partake in the cereals and fresh bagels and jam every morning, and you bet I took advantage of the signature teas every chance I got. Again - the attention to detail was astounding and very appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our romantic and relaxing holiday and have decided that the Beall Mansion will be our home whenever visiting the in-laws. We can't wait to come back. Thank you Jim & Sandy. See you hopefully in the Spring!
We went there for an anniversary and was totally impressed. Jim, the owner, warmly greets you and that warmth continues to be shared each time you see him. The rooms are beautiful, roomie, and comfortable to enjoy a weekend. My wife enjoyed the chocolate bar during our stay which was one of the reasons why we stayed there. If you're looking for a great B&B this is it!
Jim the proprietor is as welcoming as can be. It's a grand and comfortable home. The dozens of chocolates, brandy and many other complimentary amenities along with a good breakfast make this worth the trip. The neighborhood alone is a classic. Why stay anywhere else.

Mini Corral Hamburgers

1500 Main St
Alton, 62002
Reviews:
I have to begin by thanking Aspin for her review on Yelp. If it were not for her, I would have never discovered Mini Corral Hamburgers and it is only four blocks from my work. It may be on "Main Street", but Main Street in Alton is not the main drag, so it is off the beaten path. Now that I have discovered it, I may never brown bag again. My first visit I enjoyed a Cheeseburger, with just the basics; ketchup, mustard and pickles. The hamburger was hand pressed and char broiled. It tasted as good as one I would make myself in the backyard. It extended the entire circumference of the entire bun. As I took each bite, I wondered why any one would go to a fast food burger joint when they have MCH in their town. This has to be the first place that I have been to that gives you a choice of traditional fries or steak fries. I'm use to choosing between seasoned, curly or sweet, but never steak. I'm a fan of steak Fry's, so I will always go with a thick meaty fry. Their regular fry is a crinkle cut. They also offer onion rings, can't wait to try them. In addition to offering some of the best home made Root Beer by the glass or by the gallon for $4.59, they also have home made Red Cream soda. As a child, red cream was my favorite soda. The staff is small town friendly, so they offer service with a big smile. I can order ahead and my order is always ready when I arrive. The menu is extensive and I can't wait to try some of the other offerings. It has sliders, catfish, chicken tenders and even steaks. Keep in mind it is a cash only business and there is no ATM on the premises. Next time your across the river in Alton, I recommend you stop by and enjoy a Root Beer and a slider, so you can experience one of the jewels of Alton. You'll then realize there is more to Alton then, Fast Eddies and Moonlight.
We were searching for a place to eat lunch with good ratings in Alton that hopefully didn't have a full, over flowing parking lot. We found the perfect spot. We ordered a couple mini burgers, catfish sandwich, crinkle fries, small order of wings and of course the raved about root beer. All were yummy!!! Some of the best wings I've had in quite awhile. Wish we lived closer so we could call in a to go order on a whim. Definitely will be back.
Best homemade root beer, great menu, great food, and outstanding service. The guy that runs this place is genuine and knows his regulars. Everything here is cooked to order. The mini burgers put White Castle to shame. Everything we've ordered has always been piping hot and tasty. You can't go wrong with anything you order here. Their signature are the mini burgers, root beer and cream soda. Places like this are hard to come by with all the chain restaurants in the world. Give these guys a try but do know it's cash only.

This is definitely not Subway and that's a good thing. It's a bit pricey but definitely worth it. The sandwiches are huge and always use the freshest ingredients. I've had the Pig on a wing, the Ruben and the Italian and all have been well worth it.
Their Reuben is truly Best of The Best. It is, Corned Beef with Kraut, 1000 Island Dressing, Swiss Cheese, Grilled and Served on Marble Rye Bread. It is huge, it is so big that I only ate half of my sandwich and took the remaining half home for dinner. I may have had the same thing for lunch and dinner that day, but it is was totally amazing. It is a small sandwich shop, with the ambiance of a dive bar. It is dark, has a mixture of hightop tables and video games. In addition to the sandwiches, they offer a variety of chips and bottled soda. I was here mid afternoon and the place still had at least a dozen folks enjoying a late lunch. The lone man working was outgoing and very personable. Why anyone would choose Subway or Jimmy John's over S&S is beyond me. We shop local, now is the time to eat local as well. I can't wait to go back and try their Pastrami and Pig on Wing. Even if I am not hungry, I will stop and get a sandwich to go and enjoy it later.

Reviews:
I came to Woody's for the first time today. I recently moved to this area and I know they are known for great fried chicken, however, I was in search of an excellent cheeseburger and Woody's did not disappoint! It kind of reminded me of a Five Guys style of cheeseburger. Thin burger patties, gooey American cheese. I was disappointed that they discontinued the hot pepper cheese balls (!!!) but their beer battered onion rings were excellent. I will be back!
Everyone says great chicken, of course it's great chicken....but I think they have a great burger. Way better then any fast food place around!
The chicken is great for the price. I remember when it was in wood river good then great now. If you need a chicken fix woody's is where it's at.

Spoon Baking Company

This morning I needed a breakfast treat and of course coffee. Spoon Baking Co opened about three months ago. No, this place can not host a crowd. There was a lady at the counter when I walked in and we were both dancing around for a spot to stand while we waited. Do not let that deter you from stopping in for a treat. The counter is full of delightful looking treats raspberry scones, cinnamon rolls the size of Princess Leah hair bun, cookies and my treat mini gooey butter cake. They have two different coffee to go, its what they call their coffee of the days. I had the Hazelnut blend and the other was labeled Kona. They do not have almond milk, only half and half, that is what the owner told me. Hmmm ladies you need to get some soy and almond milk options. The packaging was beautiful and it got the attention of my coworkers. I felt guilty eating the whole mini gooey butter cake, I divided it between two of my coworkers. It has just the right amount for gooeyiness (if that is a word) butter and not to over powering with the powdered sugar. If I can add a con, this place is REALLLLLYYY small. Not more than three people could be at the counter to order. But if you want to be a hit with your coworkers or give someone in your life a little bakery treat this is the place. Bonus it is a little family owned place, which always make me want to support.
If you're a fan of small local bakeries then this is a must! Everything is handmade with love and made to perfection. When you walk in its quarters may be extremely small, like literally will only fit 3 people at a time, but you don't even think about that because you become so distracted with it's overwhelming cuteness. It's white and tiffany blue them is adorable and so modern! It draws you in starting from the street with their bright blue door. It has a large window seat for you to sit and enjoy your delectable pastries and coffee. Why wouldn't you want to sit and enjoy? It feels like you're sitting at a cafe in Boston watching all the people hustle on by. On top of it, this company is owned by a family that has poured their heart and soul into it. I was actually helped by their daughter that couldn't of been more than 10 years old. So CUTE! This reason alone should tell you to come and support them! You won't be disappointed, I promise.
Such great prices for such yummy baked goods! Much rather support a local business than a chain. Coffee is a bit on the weak side for me. But I like mine strong. Great service! They have done such a great job of making a tiny space feel welcome and homey.

I love Jimmy Johns. Online ordering is a breeze. I place my order, customized just the way I like it, click send and its delivered before I even get the confirmation email. Excellent sandwiches. I also like to stop in for day-old loaves of bread. These are great for dinner.
Oh Jimmy, I do so love you. I do not have a Jimmy John's near me so I was excited to discover that Godfrey had one a few blocks from my office. I needed to walk away from my desk and felt a Club Lula callin my name. I know the commercials for this place are quirky but they really are fast. By the time I ordered and was getting my drinks, they were standing with my pickle and sandwich ready to hand to me. This place has a few tables in the back, I snuggled into a two person table to enjoy my sandwich and quiet. Thank you Jimmy, you never disappoint......
Freaky great!!! Fast clean and the best cold sub on the market. I can't say enough good things about the service or how jimmy johns handles themselves!

We found this restaurant by accident because the one we are looking for was closed and we are glad we did. The food and service were excellent. I had the chicken panini with camelized onions and my wife had the turkey and brie panini. We split a wedge salad and asparagus mushroom soup. The sandwiches were nicely grilled, seasoned and tasty, although the turkey was a bit light on turkey, with one deli slice. The wedge salad had lots of Bleu Cheese and the soup was outstanding, made with fresh asparagus, mushrooms, and a chicken broth base. All the ingredients were fresh and well prepared. The proprietress, Terri Beaubien, was very nice and showed us her innovative breakfast menu. She and her husband are new owners and redecorated in cheery country French. We would definitely eat here again if we are in the area.
Love LOVE this place! Their ingredients are always fresh and food is handmade with love. If you haven't tried their soups and salads then you're missing out. I do wish their prices were a little more friendly and if they offered espresso beverages I'd be in heaven. Rented this spot for my baby shower and everyone was so accommodating. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. And the rent $$ is very reasonable. Would recommend this spot to anyone that lived in the area.
A friend invited me to have lunch with her. She warned me that the chef and owner are not the best time managers, I wondered what she meant by that but I quickly learned. We arrived around 11 when they opened, I was dining with a senior and yes they think lunch is at 11. She was raving about how good the Mushroom Asparagus soup was and that I really needed to try it. Okay I was ready, well here is where the time management or mismanagement factor came into play. The soup was still 30 minutes from being ready to serve, when they open the doors at 11. Hmmmm, yes you read that correctly not ready to be served when they opened their doors. My friend settled on the Mediterranean salad and turkey Panini. I had the Market club. The sandwich arrived with a hefty sandwich sliced in half with an ample amount of bacon, turkey and lettuce. Each half got a slice of tomato and a spread that was spicy. I asked the waitress to refill my glass twice. Billy goat chips and pickle slices (not a spear) which would have been easier to eat. I wanted a cup coffee because I was freezing, the coffee was luke warm, and I asked the server if she had almond milk... She responded what is that...... Ummm never mind. This place has touches of elegance, but they used paper napkins and the lunches are served in plastic It was interesting...

First of all- this place is cash only. No sign, no note, they don't seem interested in letting you know until after you've eaten. Second- this place is a pretty "Meh" diner. With gyros. I had a gyro plate, it came with my choice of two vegetables. "Vegetables" are apparently more loosely defined in IL, as the choices were mashed potatoes, canned peas, and spaghetti.
Stepping into this place is like taking a ride in a DeLorean and traveling back to 1950. Take a seat at the counter or in a booth and mom and pop will come take your order. You can tell their clientele is mainly regulars, and you feel like family by the end of your visit. This is the type of place that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside even before you lift your fork. I watched as Pop greeted everyone by their first name when they walked in the door, seeing as they were a Greek family and I love Gyros, I ordered that. It's was great and authentic and will definitely be going back for another! I noticed many people had the special which was roast pork, it looks comforting as well. This place definitely gets 5 stars in my book, I love these type of places and you just don't see them anymore.
This tiny diner is easy to overlook when driving past but is defiantly worth stopping. I stopped by one afternoon while I was working in the area and discovered that this place makes a damn good hamburger. G-B Grill easily has the best burger east of the river and as an added bonus the place is dirt cheep.

This place is better than any Mexican place in town. The food actually has flavor here.
I judge a Mexican restaurant by how the do on the carnitas. They nailed it. My wife jokingly ask for cerviche. Well for the price of coming back a second time (the next day). They are going to make it for us. Bad Ass!
Great Mexican food, delicious margaritas & awesome friendly staff. Can't ask for much more!
