My family insisted that I write this review because they loved this place so much. We had the fried dough as an appetizer. I had it with just butter a d the had the cinnamon sugar mixture. They inhaled it. I ordered a beef pot pie and the actually brought me chicken pot pie. I didn't say anything though because it was amazing. The crust is simply amazing. My daughter had the Quesadilla and thought is was one of the better ones she had eaten. I had corn bread and I wished I had bought some to take some home. Then they had the banana cream pie....In their words one of the beat pies they have EVER eaten.

In had a Affagato with vanilla ice cream and then found Hair in it ! yuck! The gave me a new one made with half vanilla and half huckleberry. It was tasty! Service was good but the hair in my Affagato was not! Popular place and open until 10:00pm. check it out !

My husband and I ate lunch here for his birthday. We were impressed! 1) They give a free birthday meal of $10.95 (or you pay the difference over that- mostly everything is under that budget, however), a piece of pie, and a drink. 2) Our waitress was personable and attentive. She answered all our questions & was knowledgeable about the menu. 3) We ordered the fish fry- cod and fries with creamy potato soup and cornbread. Everything was warm (not too hot) and tasty. We split the meal and were both very full, although I wouldn't say the portion size was 'large.' 4) The strawberry lemonade was tasty- though a little too sweet. The lemon meringue pie was probably the best I've ever had! The meringue was perfect- moist, not too dry, flavorful. The lemon filling wasn't too tart. The crust was flaky and light! Mmm... It was a large slice, and although we shared a meal and the pie, we took leftovers of the pie home. 5) We ordered scones with cinnamon and sugar to go. When we ate one later, it was delicious even though it wasn't still warm. We have yet to eat the other one. 6) The prices are very reasonable for the food portion. Expect to pay between $8-$10 for a meal (not including tip).

Best breakfast I've had in a long, long time. The service was so fast and so good. There's plenty of food to take home after you're done or to share with someone. Both my boyfriend and myself was extremely satisfied, great prices too!

Has very good pies and food. They are close to city beach so we eat there after we swim.

Friends treated for birthday...wonderful sentiment, looked forward to going. Slug slow service...with only four tables with guests. Asked about a few dishes, server didn't know...just giggled, I hunted down & asked supervisor...poor training, not fair to new servers. They ask for Drivers licence to...make a photo copy and din't bring back for a long time, after asked for it to be returned (again NOT busy) My free birthday dinner was limited to $10.00, that's fine, I mean it "is free". So, I want a dinner that's listed for $12 or so..."I'd be happy to pay extra"..."No, you can't do that". "Why?"..."too complicated" Food arrived...cold. **sigh** Ever go back? I don't think so.

We found this place last October on the way to Spokane. We stopped on the way to Spokane and on the way back to Canada. Just this past week we did the same. On our way to Spokane we stopped for pie. I could only eat the fillings b/c I'm a Celiac but so worth the risk of being gluten bombed. Stopped for another piece on the way home. I bought whole pie to bring back to my husband it was less than $10! He was so excited when I gave it to him. Can't wait to go back.

Razzleberry pie is the best, followed by sour cream lemon...

Okay but not great at all. This was just a really average breakfast. The chicken fried steak tasted odd and the gravy just tasted like flour. The scrambled eggs were flat and icky, a definite skip. Honestly the waffle was really the only good part. I saw a few other breakfasts go by that looked really awesome, maybe I should be more adventurous? I'm not sure but our breakfasts were just ... meh.

Wanted to like this place but couldn't get served if my life depended on it... We were promptly seated but then left... After 12 minutes of not being spoken to and no drink order taken we got up and left as our server must have been on lunch break! I watched another table get their drinks and food in the time that I sat there waiting for someone to serve me... Thank you for nada

RC cola - WTF? Great French toast, weirdest service I've ever had. Server had to tell us she was busy and had hot food coming up. Then started taking orders anyway. After taking my brothers she stopped to put his cheese sticks in the fryer before taking anybody else's order.

Love this place! Always look forward to eating here. The breakfast specials are priced well. I like their twist on biscuit. The bacon is always crispy and the skillets are really good too. I still haven't tried the pies yet but looking forward to those too.

This place is fast! Your drink wont ever be more then half empty before the waiter comes and brings you a refill. Because its nice and fast this has become a good place for my family (visiting from Oregon) to come and have breakfast with me before they leave town. I always get hash-browns and eggs, and my mother gets fresh strawberry topped pancakes! Good Breakfasts and Dinners!

Pretty good pies depending on when you go and what kind of Huckleberry season theyre having (for instance). Ive had their Huckleberry pies with half the berries in it and they act like its no big deal. Its good when its good. Pretty sure they don't use preservatives. Just don't bring Amex. They'll be glad to tell you how Amex charges too much. Poor small-town mentality. They dont know about things like the square and other services that average out the percents. They rather take the no-sale. Why Amex? Because its got the best protections for consumers thats why...I, for one, dont care what theyre retail/POS problems are.

This is just another average coffee shop type restaurant. Good lunch special. Service is often slow..

We have come here several times over the last three years and it never disappoints. Good food, good service, and super convenient location. If you want a reliably good meal, stop in here!

I've eaten at this place maybe twice and breakfast was just OK. But I feel like their service and people who work there just suck enough to rate off of that. One morning the manager literally came out and yelled at my boyfriend and I (now husband) for kissing in the parking lot by our car before getting in. What the hell? He told us to get a room! What an ass. How about, find new customers as we won't ever be back.

average menu. nothing stood out really. the cinnamon roll was huge and a bit too doughy for me.

This is a place that we will come back to again. We are not from here, we are from east of the Mississippi River, and I am a from-scratch cook and pie baker myself. It is so hard to believe, and also a great relief, to find a place where they make their own pie crusts in the back. Interestingly, they do have a machine that actually forms the pie crusts so that they are uniform in appearance, but they make the crust from scratch on site. Corn bread really is awesome, as other reviewers have mentioned.

This place was a staple when I was growing up and I always take time to have a meal at Panhandler Pies when I go home to visit. The food is good the service is good and the atmosphere is fun. Don't forget to order some mud pie, even if you have to take it home to eat it. Delish!

Only had breakfast there once and it was ok at best. The gravy was packaged and had no flavor....the rest was ok, but it's hard the mess up eggs over easy and bacon....I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 because of the good and friendly service.

This our standard "go to". Restaurant when in Sandpoint, usually our 'goodbye' breakfast. The servers are so fast, I've been tempted to look for roller skates. Good, basic breakfast food.

  • Mark S.

Spending time in the Sandpoint area always means we can stop in for some pie. We did this again, two days ago and the pie was awesome. Again. One banana cream pie and one strawberry rhubarb pie to go. Great. One pie = $9.00. Fresh and tasty. What else could you want? Short review, to the point but what more can you say about great pie?

We will definately come here again! We are from California and are so glad that we found this place. The food was Outstanding and the service was Great, too. The prices were extremely reasonable and the pies are Incredible! We're going to tell all of our friends about Pandhandler Pies in Sand Point, Idaho!

RC Cola. Yes. Royal Crown. I have a huge soft spot for any establishment that carries RC cola. Panhandler Pies is one of those places. Very tasty pie served with a friendly smile by helpful staff who will remind you it's better warmed up with ice cream on the side. Who was I to argue? Panhandler is a family establishment through and through. Closed on Sunday "because Sunday is for families" and the soda glasses clearly state that absolutely no alcohol is offered at Panhandler. The rest of the menu is a mix of very familiar cafe food. Burgers, sandwiches, a steak or two. Great corn bread!

We have been to Panhandler Pies several times over the years, usually at least once every time we are in town for brunch or lunch. A good family style casual restaurant that you'd feel comfortable bringing your kids, grandparents or whomever to. They give you a generous amount of food for the prices, we often get the soup and sandwich combinations for lunch. Nothing fancy, just basic home cooking sort of dishes. The staff is always friendly and we always feel like we can linger and visit even after we've finished eating, which is a nice thing when visiting with friends and relatives. Overall, I'd say this is a good family restaurant, but if you're a foodie you'll probably be happier at a different place. I'm sure we'll be back on our next stop in town. Having said that, I'd suggest to stick to the fruit pies. We ordered the Lemon meringue pie on our last visit, and it was a real disappointment. The lemon wasn't very lemony, nor very tart, nor very sweet, so that was not exciting regardless of what way you prefer your lemon meringue. Also, the meringue was kind of leathery and separating from the lemon filling.

This is not a bad place for breakfast. I thought that my dish was pretty good and it was cooked correctly. However, something was throwing this place off for me. I don't know if it was the ambiance or the service. It was just a-ok. No one was rude, but I didn't feel invited and it seemed awkward being there. I'm sure I'll give it another try when I come back for a visit.

Ok for breakfast....they had the requisite oatmeal and egg whites, but the "wheat" bread was blah..why can't a restaurant stock real while wheat bread? Interesting sausage for him, more like a brat.

A Sandpoint landmark that you must stop in and visit when you come to town. This place has been around since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. It has a very homey feel and the food tastes like what you'd eat in grandma's kitchen (assuming your grandma makes yummy homemade meals). Great pies. Also a great place to grab a hearty breakfast.

Its a cute little restaurant, i debated 3 or 4 stars. And im going with 4. Just because the one thing i can say, its the staff has always been really really friendly and on top of refill needs. Sounds small, but there have been too many times i have gone to eat somewhere and my water glass was left empty the whole time:( And dont forget FREE BIRTHDAY MEAL! Free meal, drink and piece of pie:)

Okay, but knocked down to two stars because the pie was not good, and I was expecting it to be really good since it has pies in its name. The crust is oddly dense, and I know it's not the water/altitude/environment because other places in town make great tasty flaky pie crusts. With all the other options around, I haven't found a reason to go back here since my first visit.

Went here for Breakfast 3 of the 5 days I was in Sandpoint. Had great food and service everytime. My coffee cup was never empty (very important) and food was quick and hot! Got togo pie once to save for later in the day and it was amazing as well! Not the highest quality food but it is priced very well! I would give it $ and not $$

We drove up to see Lake Pend Oreille and Sandpoint after the IRONMAN in Coeur d'Alene. It was just lovely up there! We had spotted the pie restaurant as we drove around the charming town and went back for pie. Some of our party had the lunch special of a sandwich with soup and pie -- I just had the pie. Everyone loved their food...especially the pie! Speaking for myself...absolutely delicious chocolate cream pie! Wished I lived closer! THANK YOU!

I would equate this place with Shari's or Denny's on every level. Food was mediocre at best and service was lacking. I was surprised when people in our party wanted to order pies, they were out of almost all that were ordered. Is this not called Panhandler PIES?? The pieces that they did have came out so tiny and very sad looking. My three year old makes a better looking pie! There were many other food choices in the area, but we were all hungry for a late breakfast and on our way to Silverwood. That is the only reason for stopping here. I don't think I would ever seek one of these chains out again, unless it was the only option.

This is a very home style place. Everything is in the middle except for service and their pie. Great pie. Much better than other diners and is worth a try.

Panhandler Pies is AMAZING! Homestyle cooking where you can taste the love that goes into it. Visiting Idaho for my first time from California, Panhandler Pies has given me a fabulous reason to return. The corn bread is fluffy and delicious, the chicken noodle soup will satisfy your tummy like nothing else and the pies... WOW! Talk about the solution for a sweet craving. I'm getting hungry just writing this.

Not sure about the rest of the menu but the lemon meringue pie they sold us was horrible. The meringue was sliding off the top of the pie and the custard had an appearance like it had been sweating. After tasting it, it seems like the pie was probably several days to a week old. Avoid the place, for a pie go to the Pie Hut.

I LOVE PANHANDLER PIES!!!! I have been eating here regularly for about 8 years, and of all the restaraunts in Sandpoint that have either changed their menu, fell off in quality, or just plain went out of business, Pies has been going strong!!! I love the cornbread, the sandwiches, and how has no one mentioned the soup... Chicken noodle Mondays are awesome but my favorite is the daily vegetable beef. This place is great before heading to Schwietzer or after a long day on the lake, cause the country style food sticks with you until the sun goes down at 10pm. The service is great cause your water glass never goes empty and they will do most any substitution you ask, and the prices are pretty low too. Bottom Line....PIE... banana cream and mounds of joy... PERIOD!!!

Unlimited chili bowl, great cornbread, very nice interior. I give this place 4 stars because Nina is one of the most attractive women I've ever seen. I love you Nina in a superficial way.

Dammit. I went for the RC Cola and stayed for the pies. My little family and I moseyed over to Panhandler Pies for dinner. We wanted a meal and to pick up a sugarfree pie for a family friend. My Mom got the Works quiche which is all veggie and cheese that comes with a nice gritty cornbread that straddled the line of cakey and mealy. I got the Panhandler 1/2 pound bacon cheeseburger which was really tasty. It was a steakburger really. More than I could finish but I gave it my best shot. The guy sitting at the booth across from us got the strawberry pie and dammit all, I had to get it. The strawberries were firm, fresh and tart in the sweet gelatin encasing it. The crust was nice and not too sweet which just made the strawberries sooo nice. The whipped cream was not excessively sweet which was lovely. And yes, RC Cola. I have such terrific memories of childhood of drinking this. You can't find it in the major supermarkets and you always forget about it until you have it. It's smooth and sweet. I had two glasses. I may have to hunt it down when I get back home again. Panhandler Pies is a good bang for the buck when it comes for a meal.

Great breakfast, but minus 1 star for not being open on Sundays. "Sundays are for families" is what the sign says, and it disappoints me at least once a winter. What is more family oriented than going out for breakfast on Sunday? You tell me. No answer? That's what I thought. Open for Sunday breakfast and you're flirting with a five-star breakfast place in Sandpoint...
