Horrible service. Been twice and same service each time . Waitress takes our order, brings drinks once (not all of them) brings most of the food and is never to be seen again. Guacamole has the consistency of paste. Food was decent.

It's an ok place. The service was good and my chicken asada burrito was good. Margaritas were ok.

Went for first time with six people . Place packed! Doing something right. Had issues. Returned to discuss with owner/manager two days later. Professional response, highly concerned and "promised" to put correction in place. We'll see. Issued refund, very honorable & professional...nearly unheard of in Sandpoint. Will go later in summer to see if he followed through, I'm confident he does, we'll see, and update later in summer...

I know their are mixed reviews. A lot of people are complaining that this isn't authentic Mexican food. Guess what I have been to Mexico several times and I don't think some of these people know what authentic Mexican food is. Yes this is like 95% of Mexican restaurants in the Unites States, and like the rest of them this place was pretty good. The nachos were delish and the cheese enchiladas were just as good. And the fact I ordered a large Blue Moon and they called it a Mondo Blue Moon made me chuckle. The service was awesome. If I ever came here again I would love to eat at Jalapenos and try some other foods.

Consistent. Good overall, nothing really stand out, but solid. Food came out without too long a delay, our order was accurate and relatively fresh. Staff was hit and miss - couple lunches were awesome, last visit... well, everyone has a rough day (sorry if I added to it).

Nice to come back to this staple while in Sandpoint! Service was great. Gluten free menu was nice. Food and drinks here are great.

I used to come here all the time when my parents lived in the area. This time, I was disappointed. Maybe it was always this way and I just never noticed but the food was the same. Good simple ok Mexican Food and great for Northern Idaho Mexican Food. But... the carpet is filthy, the booth fabric is stained and the plastic had holes in it. The overall feel and look has gone downhill a lot in my opinion. Wish it was the good old days in Jalapeños.

Food is good, atmosphere is typical of a Mexican restaurant. Have never had a problem in the two times I've come..always seems crowded and I haven't been diapointed with anything!

I love this place. The carne asada burrito is to die for... perfectly seasoned and cooked pieces of steak with salsa and cheese and sauce. Yum!!! Also their shredded steak burrito is amazing too - super tender and lots of flavor. I'm a big fan of all the sauces and salsas they use. Their chicken quesadilla is great too, but I like the kids one because it is just cheese and shredded chicken. The diced chicken is too dry. Their rice is also great although some claim not authentic - this is Idaho, you guys. If anything, a must at this place is the huckleberry lemonade (or margarita!) and a fried ice cream. They have THE BEST FRIED ICE CREAM IN THE WORLD!

Bad... Bad. Worse than bad. We heard good reviews about this place so I checked them on Yelp and thought we would give it a try, after seeing the menu here on yelp. We get here and the menu is NOT the same. I was wanting a nice bowl of soup and there was none listed on the in house menu. Sure the menu has a "Soup & Salad" section but not a single soup was listed. Who did the edits and proof reading on that menu??? They listed in the Yelp menu 6 different soups plus chili.. Nada... We ordered the Tacos, Carne Asada burrito and the Chicken Ala Creama. I believe everything came fresh out of a can. Including the mushrooms. I/we have never had a meal so completely LACKING in flavor and spice. The meat tasted boiled with no favors, not even salt or onions. Where's the Cumin folks? The only reason I ate my food was because I was so hungry and after prying the top off the pepper shaker I must have added a handful of pepper to my dish, to try and find some flavor. Not even the canned salsa helped. This place should NOT be called a Mexican restaurant, there is nothing Mexican about it. Not even the atmosphere. The music they had playing to loud, sounded like what you would hear in the shopping mall with your teenage daughters. And if you look around to much, you will start to see the spider webs and dust bunnies that are hanging from the lights above your table and food.

Up here in Sandpoint with my mom and sons, starving to death! Seriously, I'm ready to eat my shoe! We decided to go to Joel's Mexican Food restaurant because it has 5 stars from over 50 reviews... Must be GREAT! But we may never know because they are closed on a Saturday. I mean, huh? What Mexican restaurant is closed on a Saturday afternoon? Sooooo... Here we are at Jalapenos. Service is excellent, 5 stars! Menu is a little too long for my taste, but acceptable. Fresh made salsa is excellent! Prices are reasonable. Ambience is nice, but playing Top 40 pop, instead of some nice Mexican music? I dunno... Mom says her enchilada was the BEST she EVER had! The boys really enjoyed their fish and chips. I got the #9 combo (beef tostada and beef burrito)... As hungry as I was, I couldn't eat it all! I mean, wow! What a great meal! Thank God that Joel's was closed!

Food was terrible...period. Best thing on the table was my sons smiley face fries. Ordered 3 different meals and all arrived within 6 minutes. It was bland to say the least. All three things we ordered tasted strangely the same. If you choose to go I would not order beyond a beer and the chips and salsa, which at least were edible. Service also horrendous. Before even halfway done with our meal we were offered boxes and soon thereafter a bill. Maybe they heard our dissatisfaction and wanted us out. Best thing about the place...leaving! This was not mexican food. Go to Taco Bell and save your money and eat better food.

The atmosphere is fun, but the food is terrible. Luckily we've found ONE thing on the menu that we like and when we go we no longer deviate. Try the Chicken Flautas and you won't be disappointed. But if you deviate, you'll be sorry. The drinks are good though!

If you're ever in Sandpoint and get a craving for Mexican food, this is the place to go. The atmosphere is great and so is the food!

Atmosphere is nice. Food was typical Mexican American. Just very average.

Jalapenos is mediocre Mexican food at best. The only reason every body in town goes to this is place is because there is no other Mexican restaurant in Sandpoint open for dinner or they have never had real Mexican food. Their food is similar to an El Torito. Bland run of the mill gringo version of Mexican food. The knife to the heart is even their regular/cadillac margarita's suck. Take a tip Jalapenos, put some ice, good tequila and mix in a glass and your done. Forget whatever else you put in there that kills it. If you end up here it will fill your stomach but will leave you wanting to go to a real Mexican restaurant. Come on all you illegal aliens we hear about, get up here and give this guy some killer food PLEASE!!!

Fantastic salsa, two thumbs up!!! Our family loved sitting on the patio this summer. The service was very attentive and friendly, we will definately be going back when in sandpoint again.

Love their chips and salsa! I actually crave the spicy and mild salsas, always offered in abundance. The ambiance leaves a bit to be desired, a little Scarface-ish and dark. But the wait staff, for the most part, has been attentive and friendly. Their black bean burger and combo plate with enchilada and chile relleño are fantastic; nice sized portions, as well. Compared to other Mexican chains like El Torito, this place is much better. And for those complaining it's not legit Mexican- you're in Sandpoint, Idaho!! Seriously?? Did you specifically come here looking for authentic Mexican? Be grateful there's something better than Fiesta Bonita and for the beautiful surroundings in Sandpoint. Nice family place, ok price. But in a small town, high prices are the norm. At least they give you enough food.

Very Americanized Mexican food that is rather forgettable once you eat. To be honest they spent more time and money on the interior than they did on their menu and hoped no-one would notice. The bottom line is if you like Azteca or some other run of the mill Mexican chain place than this place will fit your bill. If on the other hand you want some good Mexican food that is more authentic than give it a pass. 2.5 Stars

Coming from California, I was skeptical of family-style Jalapenos. But I have found my dish here - the Snapper Vera Cruz. It may not seem like "traditional Mexican" to many, but this dish is fantastic - it has me making yummy noises as I eat and actually crave coming here. Friendly service, decent chips & salsa, and a good tequila selection

GREAT service but it all stops there! We ordered are food it looked like mush and it was not what we asked for. It came to us 5 min flat after ordering out of 10 I give the food a 1 only because the salsa was good.

Chips and margaritas are good...everything else is bland, and mushy. No thanks! (However, I know a lot of people who like it here? For some reason??)

We had a good time here with a party of 9 for a birthday. It's a nice Mex-American food place. We got great service, with lots of refills on the chips (regular salsa was good, but the mild salsa was like spaghetti sauce). I enjoyed a Top Shelf Margarita, and their steak fajitas. They brought tasty fried ice cream and a sombrero to celebrate the birthday. Not sure if the hat is politically correct, but all in all it was a fun place for a celebration in North Idaho.

"How was it?" inquired the other not-from-around-here couple we passed on our way out of Jalapenos as they were making their way in, obviously having the same debate my wife and I had just finished before walking in ourselves. "Umm..." I replied, trying to diplomatically choose my words, as we were still within earshot of the patio. "What you'd expect?" asked the couple. "Exactly." It's your typically generic Americanized Mexican food you'd find in any reasonably decent chain (think Las Margaritas or Azteca for you Western Washington folks), and the decor is your typical part desert/part tropical setting that feels like it could be from the set of a Speedy Gonzalez cartoon. The food was fine - nothing spectacular, but it was filling and respectably prepared. My carne asada burito was supposed to have mole sauce on it, but what it came with was more like a bland, food service enchilada sauce, which is what I hope it was because no self-respecting Mexican restaurant would try to pass that off as mole. My wife's carnitas were actually quite nice with big, tender chunks of pork simmered in chili verde sauce that she found acceptably spicy. Plus her leftovers went into a pretty fantastic breakfast scramble the next morning. The service was great, but I think by now I'm going to stop recognizing this about businesses in Sandpoint. Unlike many other locales, great service is standard here with mediocre service as the exception. My only real complaint was the margaritas. We both went for the Cadillac version, which in most cases is typically worth the extra buck or two over the house marg. But ours were far too potent (in a bad way) and tasted like they were trying to do something inordinately fancy with the drink. Keep 'em simple, keep 'em tasty. At the end of the day, it is indeed what you'd expect. Go in with that in mind and you'll probably walk out just fine.

The owners, Shari & Chet, are by far the best owners in town. They are so good to their customers. Chelsea the Manager is also outstanding. The entire staff is great and take good care of you! We love the food and atmosphere. The burritos, tacos and just everything is great. Chips and salsa are outstanding. They have Pacifico on tap! Yum. Overall our experience is always good and that's why we keep coming back.

You know, I was seriously scared. As you probably know from my Walmart review, I was on a quickie vacation at the Schweitzer Mtn resort during the off-season, so we had to go into town for shopping/eating. The decor is so kitchy that it scares you into thinking that the food may be awful. It's not - I ordered the ceviche and black bean soup and enjoyed both immensely for their freshness, brothiness (soup, obviously) and the good feeling of satiation i felt soon after.

Almost passed on this place because of some of the reviews. Very glad I didn't! Server was friendly and attentive. The Chicken Cilantro was incredible! I will definitely be back!

It's no Merry Piglets (Jackson, Wyoming) but it does in a pinch! The atmosphere is fun and funky southwestern and the service is always friendly. I've had the chimi and the taco salad and both were very tasty! Will most definitely revisit on my annual Sandpoint trip!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
