One of my favorite places for cheap Mexican food. I've been frequenting El Aquila Real for many years- now I prefer Isla Cozumel. Portion sizes are excellent. The queso dip is delicious. They have a couple of seafood dishes that are slightly unusual for DSM-area Mexican restaurant menus, and they are fabulous as well. Ala carte fish tacos (rarely seen ala carte!) are delish. Recently they've added a couple new fajita choices to their menu- last week I ordered a special new one that had chicken, steak, bacon, shrimp, and veggies, all topped with cheese. YUM! I'll definitely order this again. Margaritas are pretty basic, but good, especially for the price. We've been here with groups (6-12 ppl) and have never had a bad experience. My husband and I have gone just the two of us and have had equally good service. If you need to be in and out quickly, you can do that- even with a large group.

This was our first time in this restaurant. We used to go to El Aguila Real but since they closed we're shopping for a new 'favorite' restaurant. This place was a pleasant surprise for sure. The service was super fast and the food was great too. Based on the other review we got the queso and she was right. It is great. My wife had the chicken fajitas and I had the Burrito Cozumel. Both of our dinners were very satisfying and the price was very reasonable. I'm still searching for someplace that serves a good chicken mole and there was none on the menu here but we will definitely be back.

Food poisoning!!!! Checked in at 5:40pm Wednesday on fb. Chips and salsa, margarita were fine. I drove to Urbandale Wed. to meet a friend from MO to return her dogs to her that I'd been showing this summer. Instead of making the entire round-trip in one day(5 hours each way) we got a hotel room. Our supper choices were narrowed to Mexican or Italian, I picked Isla Cozumel :( I wanted a tamale. Two of the combos had one. I got the #12, one each; tamale, burrito, enchilada. I requested green verde sauce instead of ranchero on the enchilada. The entire plate was smothered, no biggie. I think the tamale was pork, ate half, dull flavorless. Moved on to the burrito which was ground beef with no seasoning, a couple bites I start getting odd taste. Enchilada next, same plain ground beef with a different tortilla and odd taste. I take another bite of just the meat from each...still no seasoning but is that odd taste stale refrigerator? Buy now the woman with me has scraped copious amounts of sour cream off her bean tostada and says hers tastes off too, especially the lettuce. We left our plates maybe 1/3 eaten and boy am I glad! We told the waitress there was an off taste maybe the kitchen didn't cover things tight? I typically have guts of steel and eat from taco stands while on vacation in Mexico, have had better tamales from a vending machine where I've worked!! This place was TERRIBLE!!! The drive home the next morning(yesterday) was nothing but intestinal cramps and frequent rest area stops. I didn't think I would make it home after the last rest area south of the Twin Cities, rush hour starting not wanting to pull off and stop in a gas station I clenched and moaned the last hour and a half. Once home I was in the bathroom every 10 minutes and have still not ate much today.

Food was fairly standard, and perhaps a bit below places such as El Rodeo. However, the service make Isla Cozumel a bit brighter in my eyes. There was a large party of 10 of us on the outdoor patio and the servers assigned to our area were very prompt about drink refills and chips/salsa. Everyone's check was accurate and they didn't add in a mandatory gratuity which I find refreshing. Food is approx. 2.5 stars, service is 5, for a total of four stars.

Affordable food? Check Clean venue? Check mostly Good food? Just ok. I love Mexican food, however after getting my food I immediately reached for the salt shaker (which was too dirty to work so had to ask for a different one) this is a good sign of flavorless food. Although the price is right I believe the prices can be raised along with the standards.

Started with the complimentary tortilla chips. They seemed kinda stale. The salsa was more on the pureed side, kinda bland, and didn't seem freshly-made. When I went to the bathroom I saw about 50 baskets of chips made up sitting in a warmer. I'd hate to show up for supper and be served those old chips. I ordered the Maya Special. The hubby ordered the Fajita Supreme. My food was OK. The tilapia was nice and flaky. The platter was enough for 2 meals. Hubby said the food was ok, but rather bland. He liked the queso with chorizo. Overall, the place is below average. Monterrey isn't far from this location and is much better. They were open on Memorial Day, so that's what brought us here. The service was friendly and efficient. This was a toss-up between a 2 and 3 star. I feel bad giving a 2, but there's a lot of tasty Mexican cuisine in Des Moines.

Went back here and they seemed to have fixed the things that bothered me when I came. Food was no longer dry and it was made fresh. Queso was delicious. The margaritas were bigger and when asked why the daily special was not given the manager gave me a card for a free margarita. Definitely go here, very good.

I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped in to Isla Cozumel for the first time this week for lunch. The atmosphere is a little strange with a fireplace and red leather booths (used to be Mama Lacona's), but they've done some redecorating to make it fit their theme. The wait staff was extra friendly and service was fast. My favorite parts were the queso - it was extremely cheesy and delicious - and the chips. The were smaller than other Mexican restaurants, so you didn't have to break them, and they fit in the queso dip perfectly. Other favorite part, they have Cherry Coke! Prices are cheap, and I had a great experience. I'll definitely go back...so check them out!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
