I must have a black cloud hanging over me for ottumwa cuisine, we stay at a hotel for work and don't have much food options, one guy I was working with seen their commercial on tv and I admit it did look good! Steak, turkey, sausage, all coated with varnish to entice you to come eat. Well it worked until we walked thru the door. We got there after lunch and they had a buffet, but not with one thing the commercial had showed, can we say false advertising. So we sucked it up and went ahead and punished ourselves with their food, I went thru the buffet, standard buffet style food, chicken, potatoes etc... I get to the gravy and there is a fly floating in it, so I wave over a server tell her about the fly and she looks at it for a second grabs a saucer and the gravy ladle and dips the fly out and puts it on the saucer drops the ladle back on the gravy and says there ya go! And walks off towards the kitchen. Well that did it for me I put my plate down and did not eat while the other guy choked his food down. All the reviews have the same underlying tone, don't eat here!

Food was ok not the best I have had but far from the worst. The brisket was pretty good while the rest of the buffet was un-remarkable. Cheesecake was pretty good as well.

Sirloin Stockade has been on the North side of town for years, they have now renovated the buffet area, which makes things more interesting the way that they did it. I'm not sure if it flows as well as the old set-up. But it's easier for the employees to get the hot food out and not get in the way of people trying to get the food. I was there on a Friday night, which is Fish Friday and being that I don't eat fish it was hard for me to eat anything that I actually liked. Being that I paid a good $9 for the meal it's hard to actually want to go back there unless family is also going to be there.

I wish I had read the reviews before eating there. :-( I am passing through Ottumwa and saw it on the way to my hotel. As the parking lot was fairly full, I thought that I would give it a "shot". As the old saying goes: "One always pays for what one gets and if you are lucky you get what you paid for." In this case only the former is true. I paid $16.57 for the seven ounce filet mignon. I ordered it medium rare and I should have known better when the waitress asked me if I wanted steak sauce or ketchup with it. It came out still mooing! When I sent it back I suggested that if that was their version of medium rare perhaps I should ask for it medium. When it came back out it was medium rare and was perhaps the worst cut of filet mignon that I have ever had. Even considering it was only $16. They even manage to screw up a baked potato, it was overcooked. I would be surprised if this place stays around much longer, but I guess the buffet crowd may like the quantity versus the quality.

I seriously wish that I had checked the reviews on this place before eating there because our experience at Sirloin Stockade (2645 Northgate, Ottumwa) was a joke on all levels. Other than one poor experience two weeks ago at a wedding in another community, this is the worst place that I've visited in a very long time. We were here because it was close to our hotel and McDonald's and Pizza Hut were also close by, but neither of them tripped our trigger. We saw many cars in the lot and figured this place must be good based on that. We were wrong. Nothing good to say. Where do we begin? Let's start with the décor. This place looks like they haven't changed anything since 1986. Old, old tables, chairs, carpet, everything. Even some of the photos of the food on the wall were faded. The menu board reminds me of something that you'd see at a Bonanza restaurant (are those even still around?). Everything was chintzy, from the crocheted "Sirloin Stockade" photo above the dining area to the crappy wooden finish. We hoped the food would be better. No dice. The food was terrible. Everything was overcooked, under-seasoned, bland and so dry it was leaving us searching for a big gulp of soda to wash it down. The steak should be the star of the buffet and even that wasn't good. It too was overcooked. We weren't even sure of the cut of meat. The buffet had a taco and salad bar, traditional steakhouse sides (potatoes, mac and cheese) and seafood (well, as close to seafood as you'll get in Ottumwa, Iowa) along with chicken fingers, which were awful. There was a dessert bar and it featured a cotton candy machine. Seriously? Is your food so bad that you have to resort to serving cotton candy? The one bright side - the ice cream machine made great soft serve, the lone saving grace of the evening. The staff were not friendly at all. Absolutely not what I would expect out of a restaurant in rural Iowa. We've had all sorts of waiters and waitresses, ranging from "makes you feel like family" to "wouldn't spit on your gums if your mouth is on fire" and these were closer to the latter. Our waitress had plenty of time to complain to the other waitress in our area about lousy tippers from another table, but didn't find enough time to come back and refill my soda. We complained about the food and waitress to the manager and they didn't care one way or the other. This restaurant charges 9.69 for the buffet and I believe it includes a drink, which you will desperately need if you eat any of the overcooked meats from the buffet. There are "all you can eat" places in larger cities that offer a comfortable seat, friendly staff and good food, something we didn't get here. Had we known this place was this bad I would have settled for a Big Mac next door. If you're hungry and looking for cheap, low-quality food and plenty of it, Sirloin Stockade is for you. If you want anything else, including polite servers, go somewhere else. I'm sure the Pizza Hut and McDonald's nearby would do a better job of feeding and serving you. Avoid this place at all costs.

This was a good place to stop for a (super) filling meal on a road trip. We had the friendliest server ever, who made the experience nice. Other servers looked ( and complained ) that their life sucked, which is completely inappropriate. The atmosphere is lacking to say the least, but with each plate I grabbed of delicious food, it got a little easier to deal with it. Overall, if I ever come back to ottumwa, I'd probably stop here again.

After giving it a bad review the first time, I decided to give the Sirloin Stockade one more try. This only confirmed what I already thought. The food is left out for much to long on the buffet. The staff, for unknown reasons, are very, very unfriendly and act like they not only hate their jobs but that you are really an inconvenience to be in the restaurant, bothering them while they are talking among themselves. I read the responses from management to all these overwhelmingly bad reviews of the Sirloin Stockade but perhaps instead of simply repeating herself about how wonderful the restaurant is (she does have a right to her opinion), she should take the time to actually read these comments, maybe send in some friends (asking them to be frank, open and honest) from out of town to dine at the restaurant and get their opinions.

My original post was deleted due to "lack of customer experience", but maybe I should have written it differently. I generally don't write about too many all you can eat buffets, but this one took center stage. I learned about this place when I moved to Ottumwa back in 1994, and being the typical college student you don't care where you eat at as long as the food was good and you could get your money's worth. It wasnt until I was about to eat at this place that I got a first hand look at what many people I socialized with was saying about this place. Then I took it a step further by asking questions about the complaints it got as a result of people getting sick. Ok now mind you when a restaurant has too many write ups for sanitation issues you would avoid this place right? At the time I made my inquiry Ottumwa's Dept of Health had been slow to update its system to a more computerized version of accessing records of restaurants they inspect. Sirloin Stockade had a lot of write ups over the last 7 or so years. I found it disturbing that a buffet proceeded to be kept open despite the complaints that was made against this place. I don't see why the town permits this kind of nonsense. Chicago would have shut places like this down and tell the management that they can't reopen until things are copasetic. I've had better food at Golden Corral and why would any place keep food from the previous day and re-serve it the next when it's to be disposed of per health dept and city code? What was also disturbing was the number of ambulances that kept showing up to the Sirloin Stockade and seeing that too many times forced me to bar this place off my list of restaurants to eat at and giving Ottumwa your choices were pretty limited. Shortly after my brief visit several friends were sent to the hospital for food poisoning after eating at the Sirloin Stockade.

I wish I had read reviews on this before we stopped. Some of the worst food I have ever had. Just read the other reviews on before we you stop here.

Recently came back for a visit. Everything was good. Lots of different choices. Their dinner rolls and smoked brisket are really good and tasty. The desserts are awesome with lots to choose from. I had the cobbler with ice cream (yum). The carrot cake looked pretty good too, but didn't have room. One person in our group said their steak was a little undercooked but other than that everything was fine. I will definitely go back when I am back visiting.
