Omg Culvers! So again I'm a Californian in Iowa, and just learning the Iowa way of life. But Culvers has changed my perspective of ice cream forever! CUSTARD ICE CREAM! It's so creamy and just perfect. There's so many options with their ice cream it's a little overwhelming to choose just exactly what you want, but that just means you'll have to come back a lot. I chose the chocolate custard with crushed Andes mints and it was just perfect. My boyfriend had gotten a Carmel cashew sundae and his was so much better than mine. So I definitely enjoyed the vanilla custard over the chocolate which is surprising because I am more of a chocolate frozen dessert person. This is a special place in Iowa and you can also enjoy the small town friendly company that just gives you great service. I can't wait to come back and try their food, and that's if I can ever stop eating their custard!

Excellent food! We had breakfast. Their menu was not the usual breakfast fare. I had "the Hunter Gatherer", which had kielbasa type sausage, egg and other ingredients on an everything bagel. My hubby had the "Iowa", which was bacon ham, egg and other ingredients on a bagel. My daughter had a gyro bagel breakfast. My son had the garden omelet. To top it all off we had some banana nut fritters. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. Our waitress was very attentive, as was the rest of the staff. I would definitely eat there again!
The Best dining in Mason City! Enjoyed Sat night dinner and Sunday breakfast while a patron of the hotel. Great service! Loved the décor and atmosphere - arts & crafts styling in a modern setting - large tables - love that. Had the most succulent salmon filet atop an oh-so-tasty risotto with spinach and tomato. The passion fruit crème brulee was creamy and fruity. My accompanying salad was large and fresh. The next morning we shared the banana fritters - MMm, but slightly greasy. THen I had the gryo skillet over hash browns. The skillet dish really needed more feta cheese and a bit more meat. Plus when I asked for jam for the toast I received those tiny little Kraft packs that were quite stale - the jelly was hard and would not spread. So the lack of 5 stars was because of the little details (hard jelly, greasy fritters) at breakfast and it is pricey for Mason City.
Excellent food, amazing atmosphere, and attentive staff. Certainly worth a try, especially if you're from out of town and want to eat somewhere memorable.

Love the Sanchos! Muy delicious. Friendly service and clean atmosphere. Felt like I was stepping back to small town 1980s restaurant. Awesome salsa bar with fresh black olives and green onions. Will definitely take the few extra minutes to stop by next time I'm driving through.
My go to is the sancho. For a couple of bucks, you can't beat it. I load mine up with jalapeños and green sauce. Spicy enough to clear the sinuses, but not overwhelmingly hot. Great food at a great price.
A must stop in Mason City. The deluxe taco burg is my go to. I've been coming here for years, and it's never let me down. The atmosphere is similar to what you would find near the boarder. Great place, great food & beautiful people. However, their menu board is a little dated. Straight up late 80s. Give them a try! Endorsed by Ruben Weaver

Bread is amazing, with delicious olive oil garlic dipping on the side. The food was delicious and healthy proportions. Our party of 20 was promptly served and everyone raved about their food. Highly recommended!!
Food was good. Generous portions. Service was great. My only complaint is that the Alfredo sauce could use a little garlic. Prices were very reasonable. Menu is huge! Will definitely return.
Our waiter, Tony, was attentive and the food was wonderful. I didn't expect the menu variety for a small town in Iowa. I had the lobster ravioli and my sister had the ribeye a la griglia. We easily left the table stuffed and with leftovers. Entrees could easily be shared. If we are ever here again, we'll be back.

Great food, friendly service! Amazing coleslaw and sandwiches.
Wow! Loved the combo pastrami and corned beef! These sandwiches were made with a real feel for quality Chicago sandwiches! It was a real taste of the city right down to the owner's accent! John was a character, born and raised in the city and Pam was a real sweetie! Can't wait to take another road trip with my friends so I can try another sandwich
This place was recommended by a coffee shop owner nearby, and it did not disappoint! The owner was super friendly, and gave great recommendations. My husband got the Michigan Ave sandwich and I had the rueben, which were both great. The rueben had lots of meat perfectly balanced with the amount of sauerkraut

This is a pretty amazing gem to find in Mason City, IA. Menu changes often and everything we have had has been excellent. If you are a Stella fan, you will love Quarry b/c they have it on tap! Make sure you save room for one of their homemade desserts.
Perfect way to spend a nice afternoon for lunch with friends. The food was excellent-not your typical fare, from the deep fried pickles to the swordfish quesadillas. With the Park Inn Hotel around the corner, it is a great combination.
For Iowa this is pretty darn good restaurant. We really enjoyed the artichoke dip.

Lorado’s

Food for lunch is great. At night when it transitions to bar mode it can get LOUD at times, but you don't go there unless that's what you're looking for. Cheers!
After reading reviews of Lorado's my expectations were pretty high and after visiting, I wasn't completely let down, but wasn't all that impressed either. A few of us went over for dinner one evening after attempting for a couple nights. The hours here are a bit odd. They're only open for lunch early in the week and later in the week, the kitchen closes at 8 pm. Not completely out of the question, but tough for anyone who's looking for food at non-standard times. Either way, we came in on Thursday evening. The décor here is very Cheers-esk. Looks like a place from the 80's with an impressive bar, but dated décor otherwise. The menu is pretty standard with sandwiches, burgers and salads. I had a gyro, which was good not great - a good start though! My compatriot had the club and she was a big fan. Dishes are served with chips rather than fries - a welcome change for anyone who loves salt, but dislikes all that fluffy potato! Standard bar drinks with plenty of liquor choices. The beer list is pretty limited with fat tire being as exotic as they get. It seems to work for most of the clientele! Overall, Lorado's is a spot to check out when you're looking for a burger and Bud light. Nice enough atmosphere, but not a place that's going to be showcased on a must hit list anytime soon.
It might help understand this place to know that the Lorado's T-shirt is emblazoned with this motto: "Live music is better" By day, it's a mild-mannered bar 'n grill with better and slightly quirkier food and much better taste in ambient music than most. But when Julie hires a band to play evening gigs at Lorado's, the place ROCKS Amazing sound system for such a small venue, and management has little patience with boring or inept music. Call to find out who is playing when.

We came in after hearing it was the place to go up this direction. I read about how it was deemed the most iconic restaurant in Iowa and at the end of the day, we were glad we stopped in, but not blown away. To start, this place is small! Definitely an old house and room for maybe 25 total. Creates a nice atmosphere. We had late reservations so we expected to wait. The hangout area is upstairs and pretty dimly lit. Plenty of tables and booths, though the booths don't have lights and ours was pretty dark. The waitress was friendly and got us drinks fairly quickly and we snacked on check mix. Not a real extensive wine and beer list, but enough for most folks. After about 45 minutes we grew a little weary of the wait and were seated about 10 minutes later. Once downstairs our waitress came over quickly and discussed the menu. She did a good job of going over things and gave good recommendations. The bread up front of things was good and they didn't skimp, a nice change. There are no appetizers or desserts, which I found a little odd, but it worked. The steaks are all aged nicely and there are plenty of cuts, though nothing I haven't had before. I ended up ordering the filet and my better half had the ribeye. The cuts were good, we just weren't huge fans of the way they're prepared. The Greek style of effectively broiling them in olive oil and butter definitely lead to a tender steak, but we're more meat and fire folks. These were very much prepared in an oven and it just wasn't our dig. That said, the Greek spaghetti as a side was excellent! Reminded us of brown butter and mizithra spaghetti at ye old spaghetti factory! I would bathe in that action if it didn't violate a "social norm". All in all, this was a worthwhile and pleasant evening. The wait was long, but not unexpected. The sides were excellent and the steak was unique. While I'm glad we tried a Greek style steak, we won't be oiling our steaks in the near future. You'll drop $80 pretty easily, but it's worth it to say you've been here. End of the day, you may declare it the best ever or may not agree it's iconic Iowa, but regardless this place is worth checking out at least once.
The steak did live up to the hype and lore. The steaks are quality and served in a large amount of butter sauce, from my understanding there are a few famous places that do similar. I would get a little less butter if I was there again. The steak was delicious and worth the value overall. The sides including salad could use some work, they aren't anything special and the reason for the four rating. The steak is a 5 and sides are a 2. If your driving by or staying in town this is a great choice for dinner.
I live in Los Angeles but come to Iowa often to visit family. I cannot leave town without hitting the Northwest Steakhouse. Corn fed beef, fantastic Greek family cooking and an old school setting that you simply don't see these days. If you're in Iowa, come to the Northwest. You won't be disappointed.

Had dinner here with some French guests last night. The food was great! We each ordered something different and shared. The atmosphere was perfect, the beer was cold and the service was prompt and efficient. I will return on my next trip for sure!
Service was great and the price wasnt bad. The quality is nothing like a big city like Minneapolis but was suffice. They even accomodated our gluten free children so that is always a plus!
Blew a tire so we had some time to kill while our tire got fixed.. This place was right next to the tire shop so we thought might as well cut our loses and grab some lunch! I will say this could have been a 5 star place... the food was great, the service was great, the bathrooms were clean, but man there was a terrible smell that hit us right when we walked through the door! OH MY it was awful, I can't even really describe it! Lucky for us it was a beautiful day and they had a great patio to sit on and enjoy our lunch! I hope for Las Palmas (which again would have been 5 stars) can get that smell figured out.
