The best non-Mexican Mexican food in the world. The queso dip is the best ever and I haven't found anyone that can make a cheese & onion enchilada with cheese sauce that even comes close. In OH we have Don Pablos - which is AWFUL!!! Literally - it is the first place I go - airport to Carlos! No stops in between!

I swear to GOD...I had a meeting here for lunch today with a friend. Then I checked the reviews....on all the sites....and the ONLY good review...must have been on crack. I have been to many other Carlos O'Kellys across the country..and they were good...so I thought I would give them a try anyway...I just wasted my money. I was there at noon on a weekday...and there were only 4 tables of 60yr old women screaming into each others hearing aids.... There is a McDonalds just down the street....

You would have thought my memory would serve me better. Obviously I'm getting old and memories of crappy food past have slipped out. This is the only explanation as to why I allowed myself to meet someone at Carlos O'kelly's. Back in the day, Chi-Chi's was kicking this chain's butt and when poor corporate decisions caused Chi-Chi's to sell, Carlos managed to stay in business due to the void in Americanized Mexican. So, after years of avoiding this place I went with a friend. What a mistake! Decor: Yes, they are updating the front area and bar area. But the rest of it still looks like it did the day it opened and it hasn't been cleaned since. Carpets are gross, walls look like too much salsa has splattered on it and don't get me going on the women's bathroom. Yuck! Service: I see why they don't put server names on the slips. So our server (don't remember his number). was about as friendly as an IRS agent. Monotone voice, dead, empty eyes. The only thing good about him was that he did ask about drink refills. Drinks: Had the mug margarita special. I'm sure there was alcohol somewhere. Oh yeah, back at the bar. My friend who hasn't drank alcohol in two months commented on this first. "I would have thought I would have a little buzz after drinking two of these." Nope. I'm sure that a breathalyzer would have shown up to be totally sober. Food: Chips and salsa were fine. The rest of the meal was the worst pseudo-Mexican I have ever consumed. I ordered the steak fajita burrito. Looking at the photo of it, it looked ok. Even if it looked half that good, it might have been ok. There were no strips of beef. Instead there were little chunks that could have doubled for dog treats. No grilled peppers and onions, just a shit load of rice and cheese sauce. Add that to the fact that the edges of the plate contained burnt on sauce and the cilantro rice looked like it had sat under the heat lamp for too long. Two bites and I was tearing apart to look inside. Never do that as that's when you see the crap they've mixed together. I slid my plate away from me. At this point the server came back and asked how everything was. I told him that I wasn't happy with this and he came back with, "Do you want a box?" Taco Bell would have given me the same thing and I would have saved the $12.99 that I paid for this. I counted up the beef nuggets and I had a total of six. Never again, never again, never again!

Very poor quality even for pseudo - mexican. I get forced to eat here a couple times each year. All I can say is it is consistently bad. From the food to the cleanliness both thumbs down.

Food was ok, had a lunch special enchilada, not sure why they have sides you can select, the only free options are beans and rice, (standard most everywhere), anything else is a small fee. Sour cream and shredded chicken, Salsa was average, not hot, tortilla chips, were very crumbly and grainy. Not bad, but have had better, just passing by here, but I am sure must be better options.

Love this place! I go there all the time! The service is great and the workers are friendly!!! It's my go to Mexican-That's-Not-Mexican Restaurant.

Naked nachos are a joke. Got a large and only half of the container was full. Can't believe this. Carlos O'Kelly's? More like Carlos O'Crappys

With food as Mexican as a pancake. A good old fashioned American pancake. For serious. Never go here for food. Two stars because the service was out of this world.

The food we got was really salty. Wouldn't come again. This is the Midwest so good Mexican food is equal to Taco Bell or Taco Johns.

This was the worst experience I've had in years. The food was slop, service terrible, and the building was run down.

This is our go to Mexican restaurant in Cedar Rapids. Love the chips and salsa. Excellent frozen margaritas. Very upset the seafood Veracruz is gone. We have eaten at this restaurant over 300 times since we moved to Cedar Rapids 30 years ago. The restaurant desperately needs to be kept clean. Items around the restaurant are always dusty, walls are dirty next to booths. Carpet should also be cleaned periodically .through the day

Don't get lost in this labyrinth of a restaurant! Nothing special here, typical chain Mexican. Although the service has been consistently friendly and accurate when I've been there. Can't really complain about their jumbo-margarita specials...but the food isn't anything I ever crave.

Typical non-authentic Mexican food, with higher-than-it-should-be pricing. It's huge inside, and you really will get kind of lost if you wander around looking for your friends. The wait staff is pretty good, but you can go to plenty of other places in Cedar Rapids for more authentic Mexican food, with much lower prices. My 3 star rating may seem high in contrast with my comments, but they do have some great drinks.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
