These donuts! It's so hard to find a good donut and these are hands down the best in the area! It shows that they make their batter from scratch and fresh every day. Most importantly, it really shows that they use clean fryer oil. The donuts are light and fluffy, and you don't get that oily feeling of regret afterwards! woot woot! That's always a good thing. My only gripe is that the chocolate cake donut frosting could be better. Something about it is a little margarine or over-preserved tasting. Go with the raised glazed, it's heavenly.
They have the best sugar cookies!
I've been here twice now, once for desert only and once for lunch and desert. I had the steak sandwich for lunch and it was excellent. Both times I had some of there cheesecake. I really like it, but the first time I thought they actually made it there. They buy it from a company in Pennsylvania though.

A very solid restaurant. Food is quality and the ambiance makes this a restaurant for everyone. They offer a wide selection of Mexican meals done in American style. You can bring the whole family here and get them fed for under $40 which is a plus. They have a patio on the front of the building so you can sit outside and enjoy your food if you want. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a quick, quality meal and is visiting Kalona.

Nice little mom and pop restaurant. They take care of their pizzas and wont let you overkill the pizza with toppings so that it will actually cook correctly and will taste good. They have a lot of other items besides their pizzas and the effort that they put into the pizza shows in the other food as well. The service you get from them is top rate, the food quality is what you would expect of small town Iowa restaurants so that is why they get four stars from me. It would have to be Kalona Brewery quality food to get 5 stars.

We'd eaten here before (see previous review) and had a wonderful experience. We've recommended this place to many friends as a wonderful place to eat. So wonderful, in fact, that despite being sick I drug myself out of bed, got dressed up, and found a babysitter. My husband called and made a reservation and we drove 45 hours each way to go to the restaurant. When we arrived, we didn't see a hostess so we tried to walk into the restaurant to find one. We were sent back to the entryway. Then a waitress almost ran us over bringing dirty dishes in. Finally someone greeted us and asked if we had a reservation. I explained we were late because I used Google maps and we got turned around on the gravel roads to get there. We were told to go stand on the porch until they could work us in. Then, before we moved to the porch, someone else asked us if they could help us. My husband explained we had a reservation but we were 15 minutes late because we got lost, and THAT person told us it was fine and seated us. Then we sat there for fifteen minutes while a table of four was seated next to us. And took their drink order. Then someone came over and took our drink order. Before our drink order came, several staff members came over, told me to move my wallet, and cut our table in half to make a table of six next to us, without even a cursory apology. We got our drink order and managed to ask someone for an appetizer. Then the table of six was seated, and everyone there got drinks. Then the table of four on our other side that was seated after us got their FOOD. We then flagged someone down and asked if we could order. The waitress came over and said, "Sorry, that took longer than I expected." We weren't sure which of the things she'd done in the 30 minutes we'd sat there before requesting to order she was referring to. She took our order, then the table of six next to us got refills while we sat at our table, actually being bumped by the staff as they refilled their drinks. We sat there with empty drinks. Both of my husband's drinks were empty. Our server brought our salads, did not refill our drinks. She came back and took our empty salad plates, still not refilling our drinks. I tried to thank the server for taking our plates, and she ignored me while talking to the server at the next table. The table of four who was seated after us was finishing their multiple course meal, and we still hadn't seen any of our food, had a refill, or been acknowledged as anything other than a piece of furniture in the restaurant. I'd been asking my husband not to lose his temper up until this point, but I was so frustrated I got up and waited in the car. From what I understand, my husband explained our disgust and there was some attempt to try to make us happy, but after an hour of being ignored, we were ready to drive the 45 minutes home, still very hungry.
So we returned and this place just went downhill. You would expect them to put in extra effort on NYE but that wasn't the case. This time, the food was bad (as was the service), and the prices were steep (as usual). We returned home disappointed. They blew their second chance. Not planning on going back to that place!
Read the reviews which were mixed. Rolled the dice and went. Food was excellent. Staff friendly. Yes you pay a little more but it's not olive garden. Everything was prepared by hand. Home town meats, paste, excellent wine selection. Great atmosphere. Would certainly recommend it and will be back. Chicken, steaks and pasta dishes were all excellent!

They have a lot of choices on their menu as any good family restaurant has. They really have something for everyone here. Nice staff from my experience and they have plenty of seating available, Kalona is a small town so can't imagine it filling up too much. The food is just okay. I had the open faced turkey sandwich which was a little tough to chew which turkey should never be anything but tender. The Veggie sides were just peas, corn, and carrot blend, nothing too special about that. The house chicken is amazing and that dish is what you should get if you do come here, they batter the chicken to perfection. I ended my meal with the blueberry pie, it wasn't that good and ended up not finishing it. This is just an okay place that maybe you can try if your in town and need a meal.
We just had breakfast at this restaurant. We were taking a little getaway from Iowa city. Expecting just a little better than small town Iowa fare, found it to be a little worse. Never returning. Pancakes were small and doughy, served with margarine. Prices no different than Iowa city. Waitress prompted our order by standing silent with pen and pad at table. Having taken it down, she took three steps to the kitchen and shouted it at the top of her lungs. However, water was refilled quickly and food was hot when it was delivered to our table.
Solid family restaurant, and really the only family option in Kalona. Breakfast is served all day, and it's definitely their strength. The dinner menu is huge, but nothing is out-of-this-world. However, their prices cannot be beat! A full dinner comes with two sides and ice cream, for right around $8. Service is fast and friendly, and we've never left disappointed (but never had a mind-blowing experience either). Recommended orders: The Works skillet, the ham steak breakfast combo, chicken fried steak, and the seafood patter.

Once in awhile I have a good (not great) experience at this Subway, but most of the time the customer service is terrible. Whoever was the manager on 4/7/15 at 1:45 pm needs to be demoted. There's was only 1 person making sandwiches with 2 other people waiting in line in front of me, while the "manager" was just standing at the register telling the other person everything she was doing wrong. Here's a tip: help the girl out and then correct her. Don't do it in front of customers, because it makes you look even worse. Eventually the "manager" did help the girl...when someone she knew walked in. So by the time I was ready to take my sandwiches and pay, the "manager" that was just standing at the register was making the sandwich of the man she was chatting up. The only reason we go to this store is because it's close by.
