Courteous staff and a full menu of tempting sandwich choices on a variety of breads. Sandwiches are large, freshly made and served with crispy potato chips. You really get your monies worth in this place! Delicious homemade ice cream. If I'm in the area, I would go back there for sure.

I am going to give this little powerhouse a 4 for being awesome in such a tiny town. I had a business lunch, so I didn't pick what I wanted since they ordered on my behalf. I got a ham and cheese sandwich which is not my favorite and usually never get. Well this one was very good. The ham is tasty, the cheese is fresh, and the bun seems to be homemade and well done at that. They did put a little something extra on it, felt like a Italian dressing/oil type thing which added a nice kick. The place was hoping and packed when I went to pick the food up. They do have a decent selection from sandwiches, ice cream, sides, soups, daily specials and I must try the pie which I hear great things about next time I am around. They could be bad and still get business since they are the only show in town, but they do an excellent job at what they do and would love to try more of their menu.

We like local places when we travel vs a chain, so this definitely qualifies! worth getting off the highway for. I had the Malia on wheat and my mom had the Old MacDonald on rye and both sandwiches were fantastic. I also had a slice of the homemade banana cream pie and it was to die for!!!! The servers were friendly and all our food was out very quickly.

On a recent move out to Chicago, we stopped in Iowa for lunch. This gem of a restaurant is located about 2.5 miles off of I-80, in a small town called Brooklyn. We stopped here expecting some sandwiches and had out expectations blown out of the water with what we were served. First off, the lemonade we ordered was squeezed right behind the bar. The taste was great! Second, the atmosphere was really nice. It felt like a sort of "locals/regulars" spot. The service was great and the waitress was very personable. My father-in-law started off with some chili and I with some loaded baked potato soup. Both amazing. Once our sandwiches came, we dug in. The taste of the whole wheat bread was fantastic. Both my wife and I had the "Great Dane" which was bacon, turkey, and ham, if I am not mistaken. My father-in-law was also in luck here, since he is gluten-sensitive, as they had some Udi's Gluten Free bread. After lunch, we all had pie. The strawberry rhubarb was fantastic, as was the peach. The only thing was the peaches were canned, and the strawberries frozen. That, however, is not enough to deter me from ordering either one of those if we happen to head back that way. I cannot recommend this place enough if anyone is traveling along I-80 and wants to stop for some delicious lunch. Happy eating!

Found this place on Yelp while traveling from Chicago to Des Moines for a wedding. We were hungry for lunch and drawn to this place by all the 5 star reviews. It was a great find. Only 2 miles off of I 80 and well worth it. We had the beef brisket- delicious, the Grace- very tasty and 2 make your own panini. So pleasantly surprised. Everything was so good. They even make their own mozzarella cheese and whole grain mustard. Save room for the homemade pies. If you didn't save room, get a slice anyway. The coconut cream, chocolate cream and pumpkin were amazing. The bread pudding is down home goodness on a plate. Our family really enjoyed this place. The owner and staff were very friendly too. Thanks Yelpers for getting this on our radar.

I drive a lot around the Midwest for business and I'm always looking for that mythical diner. You know, the one with the homemade fruit and cream pies, from-scratch biscuits and gravy and everything else homemade. Oh, and with good loose-leaf tea (not Liptons) and kettle-cooked potato chips (not Lay's). I thought I was on a snipe hunt -- until I stumbled upon the Classic Deli thanks to the previous Yelp review. I hit the Deli on a Saturday when the special du jour was a beef brisket, slow-cooked in-house. Homemade potato salad, homemade BBQ sauce, homemade baked beans. It was fresh and delicious, as was the pie. (Oh, the pie.) The little town is cute. There's an old opera house, like many small western towns used to have. Several antique stores. The grain elevators tower over the town. It smelled a bit like cow manure the day I was there, but that's part of the ambience!

Amazing sandwiches. If you are driving through on the 80, don't mess around. Pull off in Brooklyn and get some amazing food. We had the Italian & Caprese paninis, and they were two of the best sandwiches that we've ever had.

As the Executive Director of the Route 6 Tourist Association (a non for profit group), I travel all across the state quite often. I always seek out mom & pop type restaurants, because I would rather spend my money with them, than at a chain. (For one, the money stays in the community, for another, the ambience, food, and service is normally vastly superior.) The Classic Deli and Ice Cream Shoppe is one of those places. The owner has a passion for good food and great service. I've eaten there twice, and my guest and I tried the Tenderloin and the Great Dane, with a side of bake beans, washed down with an authentic Green River. The tenderloin has got to be the most tender and moist tenderloin I've ever tried. Pounded and hand breaded, pan fried, never deep fried. Absolutely delicious. The Great Dane is a feast for sandwich lovers. Consisting of ham, turkey, muenster cheese, along with bacon, lettuce, and tomato, between two slices of grilled panini bread, it will make you a repeat customer. Brooklyn Iowa is not only off of the interstate, it is also off of current Route 6. It IS, however on old Route 6, County Rd F29 (AKA Old 6 Rd). If you love driving, this is a two lane highway for you. If you come in from current 6 (why wouldn't you? The interstate is boring), from the east, turn left on D AVE, and follow the paved road. From the west, turn right at the North US 63 junction, and follow the paved road. While widening and new paving are in the futore plans, for now, you can get a taste of old school, narrow twisty highway that is just a feast. Get off of that interstate, and check out the fun and have a delicious meal.

Skip the fast food joints off I-80. Drive a few minutes to Brooklyn to have a great homemade meal, and perhaps some ice cream too!

Run by a good guy who is normally there and very cordial. He sure knows how to make a good tenderloin, BBQ sauce, and brisket. The pie is also some of the best I have had (outside of Yoder's Sarasota). Highly recommend this place!
