I order sushi regularly in cities all over the country. In what must be the hundreds of times I've eaten sushi, I've only gotten food poisoning ONCE. Guess where? My last visit to Tokyo will be the absolute last visit I ever make to Tokyo. Not only was the service lackluster and extremely slow (inexcusable in the early evening when there was only one other table seated); judging by my violent gastrointestinal reaction, the seafood was apparently less than fresh. The first time I was at Tokyo, sushi was 30& off. That probably accounts for my previous (very generous) three-star rating. When you're paying full price, you tend to realize that this sushi is not a particularly good value, especially since it's hard to find a roll that isn't slathered in some sort of mayonnaise-y sauce and stuffed with Krab. Not to mention the sushi chef quite obviously overlooked a piece of fish which should have been tossed out rather than served to a customer. I will say it again... if you want fresh and well-priced sushi in Ankeny, go to Waterfront. From now on, I know I will.

Fantastic Japanese food. Great deals on lunches as well.

The Server Randi was great, the Hibachi experience was less then good. The food was ok at best. The use of imitation crab meat in almost all of their roll was highly disapointing.

Ankeny's newest sushi and hibachi restaurant opened in early February 2010. I've been waiting for it to open for months and when it did, I had to give it a try. First off, I got the sushi to go. While waiting for the sushi, I spoke with the staff and bartender. After finding out that the sushi chef came from New York City and how long he's worked as a sushi chef, I had high expectations. Of course, it doesn't matter how good the sushi chef is if the fish isn't fresh. I'm always skeptical with sushi in Iowa but I have to say that my expectations were not only met but exceeded. The quality of the fish was exceptional and on par with many places I've been to on the East and West Coasts. The sushi menu itself is very large and diverse. You have your basic offerings but they also have many special rolls that I have not seen before. For this first trip, I went with a spider roll, king lobster roll, rainbow roll, dragon roll, and mango lover roll. The spider roll was okay. A little expensive for what I got. The king lobster roll was amazing. And the rainbow and dragon rolls really showed off how fresh the fish was. I'm really excited that Ankeny has such a wonderful new sushi restaurant and I hope there's enough business to keep them around for years to come. I'll be back again and will provide an update in a few weeks. Hopefully, they continue that high quality that I now expect from them.

I am a fan of sushi and have eaten almost every item off most common sushi menus. Tokyo Steakhouse is split into a hibachi seating area and regular dining. I have been to both. I've eaten here countless times and have enjoyed it. I would say the Hibachi is nothing amazing, taste is standard. The sushi is also average, nothing premium. The staff is friendly and the decor is nice. Certain hours they are very busy and other times a bit slower. Price is higher because it is a sushi restaurant, but standard for a sushi eatery. I would like to point out this is NOT a high class sushi restaurant with premium grade food. Now, I've been to high class sushi places before and they are good but at a much higher cost. This place is good, but not a luxurious date place.

This review will be strictly of the sushi restaurant as I have not tried the hibachi. Sushi menu is fabulous. Huge variety or rolls to sashimi to hand rolls. I wish they would get beef negimaki back as it was the best in the area. Or at least take it off your menu so I don't get teased every time I go in! Fair price and great drink selection. Also have a good happy hour with daily specials. Favorite sushi restaurant in Ankeny by a long shot!!

We've eaten at Tokyo in Ankeny 5 times. The first time after they first opened was great. Hibachi grill entertainment food and service all great. The second time was a birthday party a year ago and again good food and service. The third time we made a grill reservation for 10 but when we arrived they gave our grill to a larger party. They pulled together 3 dining room tables for our group apologized and gave us free sushi. The 4th time with a group of 8 they incorrectly billed us for things we didn't order and couldn't figure out how to fix.. after 3 attempts we just paid for what they thought we had. The 5th time our party of 10 had to ask for drinks 3 times over the course of 10 minutes for everyone to receive drinks. The hibachi cook seemed rushed in his presentation and didn't seem like he was enjoying himself. As soon as the food was served our waitress immediately brought out to-go boxes rushing us to eat as quickly as possible. Five minutes later she was asking us to leave because a group was waiting for our table. We still had food on our plates. This place started out great and our group of 10 has spent well over $2000 with them during our 4 visits. Service is lacking. Our group will go to Ohana or Taki from now on.

Very good! Four of us ate at the hibachi grill and we all loved our meals. Our cook was excellent and made the shrimp and scallops perfectly. Very fun hibachi show. I had the chicken and it was delicious. My husband had the filet mignon and it was cooked perfectly. We also shared some sushi which was very good. I recomend the Godzilla Roll. The fried rice was also delicious. Good bear selection and excellent I had an excellent MaiTai.

The sushi was pretty good, but the hibachi was awful. If this place didn't have the sushi to make up for the rest, they'd have gone under already. Just take a peek around back and look at the kitchen help in filthy clothes lounging on boxes, smoking and playing on their phones. Classy. I don't know how they have managed to stay open as long as they have.

Love this place for sushi. Come here for their lunch specials! 2 rolls for $9 or 3 for $12 served with soup and salad. Service is super friendly and they remember you if you come in often. Sushi is well made and delicious. So are the drinks. This is a nice place to come for lunch! Especially for the price!!!

Been there for lunch twice now and been happy with the service both times. I never have to wait for a table. Food is served quickly and always tastes amazing! Both times I have gotten tempura and I highly recommend it!

This place has great sushi and really great lunch / happy hour specials. I recommend the Crunch Roll or Gangham Style - they are great! I like the atmosphere here, the booths are quiet and have high backs. It's a good spot for dates that way. Frequently, I eat here for lunch. The Bento Boxes are good value, I like the salmon best. The past few times I've had the chicken it was dry. You can also have Teppenyakii. The chefs are inconsistent - we have had great ones, and a few that were light on personality. It's not bad, but there are better ones in town The best part of this place is the sushi, specials and quiet atmosphere.

We have been to Tokyo Steakhouse several times. The sushi are good. Service is attentive enough. I think i had their Ramen, but don't remember exactly what it tasted like. ha. I need to try it again. Wednesday nights are sushi and martini special nights. You can get 2 rolls for 17. Not a bad deal. I think they make them smaller. Martinis are 4 each. They are weak compared to other places. If you're in a hurry, sit at the bar. The chefs can finish up your rolls in less than 5 mins. Overall it's a great addition to Ankeny dining scene. I haven't been there on the weekends, but the parking always looks full.

Still think this place is underrated for it's quality of sushi. I've eaten at a lot of the top sushi placed in Des Moines and this place is still my favorite! I go there about every week and they know us by name. The service is great and fast!

They made me a Jalapeño Bomb (not on the menu) & the hibachi was great! Ask for the white guy!! Serious - ask for Bud... Nice tall Sapporo's, tender meat, killer shrimp and he made 4 custom orders of rice.... Due to dietary restrictions. Great personality, awesome showmanship and most importantly a great chef!!

It's strip-mall sushi in Iowa - I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. Mediocre americanized sushi and cooked entrees drowning in grease and sticky-sweet sauces. Cheap American-Chinese restaurant-type ambiance. Unimpressive drink menu. Just drive the 15 minutes to Des Moines. Heck, PF Chang's probably even beats this. 2 stars instead of 1 because it was fairly cheap and I didn't get sick/the fish didn't seem old or anything.

We travel a lot. Sushi is my favorite food, so I've been to sushi bars all over the country. This is the best in my estimation. It may not have all the frills but the seafood is fresh, the sauces are unique and tasty.

Good food and skilled chefs. Best Asian food in Ankeny, which may say more about the others! Will visit here again. Wonderful birthday desert too!

I stopped in for lunch and had the Alaska roll and something else spicier. Overall the food was good and fast for lunch. I would definitely stop back in for a quick lunch.

We went with a group of 6 and I was excited to see a sushi restaurant in Ankeny although I have since moved to Minneapolis. I had the Alaskan roll which was good. My husband had the spicy maki combo which was tuna, salmon, crab spicy rolls...with the sauce it all tastes the same and it was ok, but not great. The service was really good and the space was typical. I wasn't overly impressed with the ambiance but at most sushi restaurants I rarely am. I would probably go back as the drinks were reasonable and we left spend under $40 not including tip for 2 drinks each and sushi/soup/salad.

Price was about typical, quality about as good as anywhere. Great for Ankeny. Would recommend.
