With all the good things I've heard about Joe's I've been intending to try them for a while. I finally took the plunge tonight and was overall underwhelmed. That's not to say my experience was all negative. The food was reasonably good and the staff was super friendly. Might be better than I'm giving it credit for thanks to my high expectations from all the other things I had heard. For us though, the good mostly outweighed the bad. I was a little surprised to hear that the only options for sizes were 12 or 18 inches, aka small or huge. Before we even started to eat we could tell the pizza was swimming in grease to the point that it would run down your hand/arm if you held on to a slice for too long. The pizza was poorly cut, which I know is really a small thing to mention but it makes an impression. The pizza was good but not really above average in any specific way. About half way through, we found a 5-6 inch long black hair melted into the cheese and decided we were done. There's potential here, but so many small things went wrong it's hard for me to want to go back. There's so many better options in Ames that Joe's can't help but be a disappointment. If there was a 1.5 star rating to give, I would. The money I spent here would have gone further at some of the other famous Ames pizza fixtures. Quite frankly, you can do better, and are sure to get less grease and hair literally anywhere else.

Great Italian Food in Iowa??? I am from the Northeast and I have found that in Iowa, people call food "Italian" if it has pepperoni on it. The options for Italian food so far have been sorely lacking (and I pretty much expected that). I really wanted some chicken parmigiana, so I Googled and found Joe's Pizza & Pasta. I live close by the plaza it's in, but I had never tried it before. I decided to try it out. I went online and ordered my chicken parm for pickup. It only took about 20 minutes to make. I took it home and I was NOT disappointed! It came with a side salad, two garlic breads in the shape of a donut, a HUGE portion of pasta, and a chicken breast covered in mozzarella. The mozzarella was perfectly melted, bubbling, and browned, like it should be. The red sauce is delicious, but I don't think there was enough of it on the pasta. That's the one little issue I had, and it's a pretty small one. The pasta was cooked a little over al dente, but not overcooked. In this price range, you would not get better Italian food on the east coast. The way the pasta was cooked, and the delicious chicken, sauteed to perfection (not at ALL overcooked or dry) and the cheese browned and a little crusty on the edges... mmm. It reminds me of home. The descriptions of the pizza in the reviews, well, I know that I will be ordering my next pizza from Joe's. There may be little things here and there that Iowans might find as faults with this place (like greasy cheese on pizza, but that's the way it was MEANT to be! All I need now is for the pepperoni to be curled up and crunchy on the edges :), but for me, it was a perfect taste of home. I will be back for sure.

Horrible! Pre made meatballs, chicken always tastes tainted, pasta sauce is canned, and takes over an hour for delivery even if you live a mile away

I'm not a New Yorker but wow this pizza is fantastic! Great seasoning, nice sauce, and wonderful crust. Iowa State had a get together and ordered Joe's and called it "the good stuff" and they weren't lying. Soon I'll have to get around to dining in. Great 'za!!!!!

I know this place has been open for a while but I've just discovered it in the past month. We've been there three times. In a month. The food is just really good and the service is great. They have the best sauce I've had in Ames - very unadulterated classic flavor, not overly sweet or thick or tomato paste-y. Just great flavors and you can tell the food is made with care. At first I thought some of the prices were a little steep for pasta dishes but you seriously get A TON of food. When you dine in you get a plate of rolls (at least 2 per person and they'll bring you more if you want) and a salad (the salads are good too, fresh ingredients and some variety of vegetables not just limp watery iceberg lettuce). I can get 2-3 meals out of a pasta dish. The portions are generous and they don't skimp on the more "premium" ingredients (olives, artichoke hearts, etc.) like some places do. It's a simple restaurant - the decor and furnishings are nothing to write home about but it doesn't detract from the experience at all, because the service and the food are what make this place fantastic.

We have gotten take out twice-pizza (thin crust New York style and a gourmet option), calzone, Stromboli and the pasta trio. Their cheesy bread is amazing. The food is reasonable priced and service is friendly. Definitely recommended.

I'm a huge fan of pizza in all its incarnations, and Joe's did not disappoint. Immediately upon sitting down we were served a tremendous platter of homemade rolls which were just fantastic. They would have been better with a sauce, but perhaps they would bring some if you asked. Not knowing we would get the rolls we had also ordered their garlic bread and focaccia. The marinara sauce served with them was great, but I didn't find either of the others to be anything too fantastic, especially when compared to the homemade rolls. The pizzas that we ordered were great. We tried 3 different kinds including one alfredo sauce pizza, and all were terrific. Although they don't currently serve beer, we were told that BYOB is an acceptable practice.

Guess it's a college town, but there are a few great pizza places in Ames. Many have a few special or interesting ways to do pizza. But Joes is a great... straight up New York style pizza. Their Ortolan pizza (with eggplant) is practically imported from New York. Their garlic bread was great, with a really good red sauce. Looking forward to going back and trying a few other things (especially the baked ziti pizza)

New favorite pizza place!!! I've been ordering Joe's almost every weekend! Amazing pizza and super fast free delivery! 20" pizza is an amazing value for the price.

Service was great. Went to the restaurant an hour before they were open not realizing that they were closed. The owner came out of the kitchen said hello and served us anyway. Food was pretty good but we're from Chicago so we know the real thing. Excellent place to dine in ames Very friendly!!j

My family and I tried Joe's this last weekend after hearing about how great it was from a few friends. We were not dissappointed! The rolls brought out at the beginning of the meal were phenomenal and not be be missed! I had the shrimp Florentine, my husband and children shared a cheese pizza. All were delicious. Unfortunately, we stopped in on a rather busy Saturday and the small restaurant was completely full. Despite this fact, the waitress was still very helpful and was prompt at refilling our drinks. When she realized that our food was taking a little longer than expected, she brought out some cheese bread on the house to hold us over. In my opinion, Joe's Pizza and Pasta has top notch food, as well as service. We will definitely be making our visits regular.

I had previously given this restaurant a five-star, rave review based on the quality of their NY-style pizza, and numerous repeat visits have done nothing to detract from that opinion. I now realize, however, that Joe's also offers excellent non-pizza food as well. With my wife out of town tonight and it pouring out, I decided to see if I could get a meatball sub delivered. I was half-expecting them to say that that was too small an order for delivery but they cheerfully said they would be happy to deliver it (for free, too). The sub itself was excellent, very cheesy with a flavorful sauce and tasty meatballs. The sub came with a large portion of excellent fries as well. The price was extremely reasonable: $7.95 for a 12 inch sub and fries (the sub was large enough for me to leave over half for lunch in the next few days). Joe's really is a gem of a place; if you haven't tried it, you should.

Our Waitress was very nice and friendly. She knew the menu well and helped us pick a delicious pizza. While we were waiting for our pizza and enjoying the delicious rolls, we were brought a piece of baked ziti pizza to try. That was our second choice behind the Murphy pizza that we ordered. We both thoroughly enjoyed the food. The pizza crust was perfect and the toppings were fresh and tasty. I gave some left overs to a friend and he couldn't wait for Joe's to open the next morning so he could get more. The owner even came by our table to see how we were doing. All in all we feel blessed to have discovered such a good place so close to home. We will be back in the near future.

Really good pizza, super nice staff. We've eaten in and done takeout several times and have always been satisfied. Takeout pizza was not as good once it cooled off, so now we heat up a pizza stone and throw slices on there to heat up before eating. Makes all the difference. Delicious!

Very delicious food. The free rolls are to die for. The food might seem pricey but you get a lot of food.

Our daughter is going to ISU and we were hungry from out trip. I had high expectations based on these reviews. So So at best, looked nothing like the pizza shown here. Asked for it well done an it wasn't. It was a soupy mess in the middle. Taste was ok but I put it in the papa johns / Dominos category. Nothing special. I suspect the people writing the reviews might have been sampling this fare at 3 am. Look Elsewhere

The Chicken Modimio is amazing! I added some mushrooms to it. Hefty portions. You won't go hungry!

AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! Best pizza we've had in ages, we ordered take out the other night and we couldn't wait to come in and have it hot out of the oven, perfect N.Y. style pie! the homemade bread given at table service is fantastic! The "Mom" (didn't get her name, very sweet lady) of the owners had made a traditional European style pie for rhe "Dad" and he generously brought out a huge slice for us to try, OMG, so delicious! Definitely needs to be a menu item! Beautiful flaky layers of dough, rolled paper thin and stuffed in the middle of all this delightful pastry was a perfectly seasoned beef and cabbage mixture that was just heaven to eat! No red sauce, just the meat and veg, very flavorful and absolutely fantastic! I ordered the Pasta Trio and it was a yummy, bubbling hot boat of cheesy, saucy mouthwatering happiness! The red sauce is very good, a nice light crushed tomato and herb sauce that was very refreshing compared to the heavy thick sauces most places make. Definitely a keeper.

My friend and I decided to order in and found this place on Eat 24/Yelp. We ordered the Sausage Cacciture (not sure if I spelled that right), chicken alfredo (I modified it and added broccoli and mushrooms), focaccia bread, and a ziti pasta. The delivery was within the time frame given on Eat24 and it was delivered hot which is a huge plus. My friend had the sausage pasta and he really liked it. Although he asked for angel hair pasta, he got spaghetti. He doesn't complain much so he was okay with it. My pasta was good but too oily for my tastes. As long as I dished out a portion on a separate plate, I could avoided the oily pond at the bottom of the to go dish it came in. The garlic bread was awesome and the salad was legit too. The focaccia bread was okay but probably wouldn't order it again. I wanted to try the tiramisu but forgot to order it. Overall, I was pleased with the food and the delivery service. I would actually give it 3.5 stars but since that's not possible from the app, I'll give it 4 stars. The delivery person was really friendly and the food was delivered hot. That's what made this place awesome I will definitely order from here again whenever I'm back in Iowa for a visit.

Awful customer service. Very inaccurate time on delivery. Called to find out where my pizza was and lady on phone was very rude.

  • Mallory B.

My service was awful. When the food got here, it was soggy and cold. The french fries we ordered with our sandwiches were not even fully cooked. The bread on our sub sandwiches was nowhere near crisp and was also soggy. This food was downright disgusting, and for the first time in my life, as I am a waitress and understand food service can be demanding, I actually called and asked for a refund. I would not recommend this place, particularly considering I had to actually heat up our oven to try to get it to sub-par levels of adequacy.

Cheesesteak Stromboli was tasty but from the reviews I had higher expectations. The price is right though and the wait staff is very friendly. It is Byo, so it was nice that I could pick up a six two doors down and enjoy some hockey too while eating and drinking. Will give the pizza a try next time.

Best pizza ever! Try the garlic cheese bread too. It's amazing. Prices are fair as well.

Wow! This is as close to NYC pizza that I have had here in the Midwest. Our new favorite! Ordered delivery. Two pies, one cheese and one pepperoni. Delish!! You don't have to go to New York anymore!

The best, NY style pizza in town. I think it turns out best with 2 or less toppings. The rolls you get when you dine in are so good too. The staff is friendly, too.

I heard about this restaurant through another Yelper and decided to give it a try tonight. We decided to take advantage of the free delivery since none of us wanted to go anywhere. We order an 18" sausage pizza with onions and jalapeños as well as a 8" cheese pizza. The employee on the phone said it would be 45 minutes and it took closer to an hour. When we received the pizzas they were not hot. They were on the warm to cold side but still tasted delicious! The pizza could have used a little more jalapeños, but then again I like spicy foods. Total price was about $25 excluding tip. I would recommend picking up your pizza or eating there. I will give it another try, but will most definitely be doing dine-in.

OMG! Honestly, the best pizza I have ever tasted in my life was from here. I ordered a thin crust two topping pizza. When the pizza arrived I opened the box and it looked like a sea of cheese, I mean literally looked like liquid cheese! I have never tasted pizza that tastes this good in my life honestly. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is I hope at some point they will be able to lower their prices just a little bit, until then I am still glad to pay a little more. Thanks!

Visited Joe's last night, after reading the reviews. Was not disappointed! Restaurant is much smaller than it looks from the outside, but comfy. The garlic bread they bring out before your meal is awesome... A little greasy, but great. I had a pizza and it was perfection. My husband had chicken pasta with lemon caper sauce...wow, how fresh tasting. We will be back.... C and D. Ames...

I'm from New York, and have lived in Ames for over 20 years, suffering through countless bad excuses for New York pizza at chains and shops run by well- meaning but clueless locals. Tonight, for the first time since moving here at the twilight of the disco era, I had a pizza at a place a few blocks from home that is worthy of being compared with any New York corner pizzeria. Joe's pizza is flat out fantastic. Astonishing as it was, I was eating a pizza that had the proper crust thickness, taste, and texture. The cheese was exactly right (not too stringy or mushy, with excellent flavor). Perfect amount and seasoning in the sauce, Each slice folds perfectly (New Yorkers will know how critical that is) with just a trifle of grease at the corner. In Ames, IA of all places. Well done, Joe's.

Yummmmmmmmmm! Their pizza is AMAZING and their rolls are really tasty!! They have the best red sauce I have ever tasted. I have not tried their pastas, but I imagine they are also delicious. This restaurant is run by a family, who are as awesome as they come! It's not open on Sundays, but hopefully in the future the business will have done well enough to justify adding additional staff and more hours. Delicious New York style pizza. Go there. You will not regret it.

We ordered a pizza for delivery one night and were very satisfied. It was HUGE (great bang for your buck!) with huge slices and fresh cut veggies.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
