The only disappointment I had, the outside area was closed due to the weather (rain). The host could have been friendlier. We were not expecting rain so we came in dripping wet and he appeared annoyed with us more than anything but the food was so amazing! We had the bruschetta and it was to die for. My date had the steak and said it was good and I had the chicken piccata which was also amazing. We had a stuff baked potato on the side, also good and the house dressing, also a plus. I hope to visit again in nicer weather.

Johnny ' s is a unique dining experience. Whether you are going out on a date, entertaining clients or celebrating a special occasion; you should experience a great meal. The menu is simple, but has something for everyone. Their food quality is top notch, and there are plenty of private seating options available. I highly recommend the bone - in ribeye for something unique. If you are planning a group meal, definitely call ahead. There are some cool side areas that have curtains which can be pulled across for added privacy. The outdoor dining options are great. For parties, showers or receptions there is an extra bar plus a great fireplace sitting area. It's a very cool atmosphere and quite reasonable to rent for a private party. The service here is not as good here as it is at 801 or even Greenbriar. Its better than AJs, though many waitstaff seem new here. We honestly don't come for the service (which is average overall), it's the atmosphere and the food all the way. Bottom line... Service is adequate, but don't come here in a hurry. This is one of my favorite places to eat a steak here in town. There are some fun drinks and a great dessert menu, too.

My wife and I went there for the first time to celebrate our 45th anniversary. We arrived at 5:30 and after a very brief wait were seated. Our server, Janaya, was super friendly. Our drink order was taken quickly and served the same. We passed on appetizers and went straight to ordering our entrees. Our salad arrived soon after. Although plentiful, I was slightly disappointed by it. The greens just seemed a little limp for my liking. Other than that it was fine. Our entrees arrived in short order. My wife chose the Parmesan Crusted New York Strip. The steak was cooked perfectly. The cut was moist, tender and very flavorful. I went off on a different tangent and chose Johnny's Veal Sinatra. I was served two healthy cuts of veal, lightly coated, that had been sauteed with shrimp, crab meat, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, basil and roasted garlic in a super cream sauce. WOW! Super tender meat and a sauce that woke up taste buds I had forgotten about. The only negative thing I can say is that my baked potato was a little on the cool side. All in all, outside of the two mentioned forgivable things, a very enjoyable experience. And, I might add, the prices were more reasonable than our usual go-to steakhouse. I think we have a new one now!

Great experience!!! We came and sat on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful weather!! We shared the little Italy combination. That was a delicious appetizer. The sausage bread was phenomenal, ravioli was some of the best I have had, and the calamari was so tender and not at all rubbery as it can be! I also enjoyed the bread with the oil and Parmesan. We also had the amazing house salad which has a wonderful refreshing dressing!! So light and flavorful!!! Deserts were super decadent, tiramisu was super rich and creamy and the mounds bar ice cream cake was AMAZING!!! So wonderful!!! Server was super sweet and friendly!! Always filling our drinks and attentive and super knowable about the menu!! An amazing experience out on the patio and I can't wait to go back with the warm summer weather. Yeah it may be a bit pricy but you pay for quality!!!

I took my wife there and told the waitress this was out 1st time. Every things was perfect from the Calamari, Salad and dinner with bread. We will deffinetely go back and we made reservations and got right in. You can also eat on the patio. Better than texas road house, Montana Mikes and other so called skeak houses we have been to.

Pricey but excellent food. I had the salmon, spinach and artichoke pasta and we split turtle cheesecake for dessert. The service is great and the decor is beautiful. Will definitely go back.

My one and only time at Johnny's was for their Easter Sunday brunch buffet. It may not be fair to judge a steakhouse based on a brunch buffet but I will. If I had to summarize my experience in one sentence it would be this: I could have done better at the Hy-Vee deli. In fact some of the dishes offered on the buffet seemed like maybe they did come from a deli. I half expect to see this place on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Is that still a show? Let's back up and start with walking in the door. My parents had made reservations and arrived ahead of us so they were already seated when we arrived. This isn't the type of place where you can see the dining area when you walk in so I approached the desk to ask for directions to the table. Two staff members were behind the desk engrossed in a conversation from which they could not be interrupted for several minutes. A third staff member walked up, said something to the other two, then promptly ignored me while she waited for them to respond to her. No hello, or we'll be right with you, not even a smile. She just turned away from me. Not a great first impression. I knew nothing about this place going into it. It was a restaurant a family member wanted to go to for lunch. That was it. Finally we were shown to the table where I learned that they were only serving the buffet, no menu service. Okay. We go to the buffet where I realized there were 8 kinds of meat, one vegetable covered in cream of something, two pasta dishes - one red one white, mashed potatoes, cheesy hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, house salad, Cesar salad, coleslaw, a very small selection of fruit, and a dessert table that looked liked someone had been to a grocery store bakery and bought all of the baked goods I would never buy. Oh and something they tried to pass off as eggs Benedict but I couldn't confirm it was anything other than a poached egg on an over-toasted English Muffin with a rather yellow sauce on it. Oh, and I think I saw tater tots....yes, tater tots. I was in shock as I walked past dish after dish that looked like it had been made by a cheap caterer. I tried the supposedly cheese tortellini, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, Cesar salad and some fruit. The salmon had a light flavor but was a bit on the slimy side. The eggs were bland. The salad was sad with soggy croutons. The pasta was tortellini in some kind of overly peppery gravy (no not a cheese sauce this was thick floury peppery gravy). I forced myself to try the dessert table. It was one of those things with semi-recognizable baked goods cut into triangles to make them look fancy. I chose four triangles. I didn't finish one of them. They were very lemony and sugary and that was about it. Based on the cheap quality of the food and the experience at the front desk I will not be back by choice.

First time to this Johnny's, and I wasn't impressed. A party of 8 at 6:15p on a Friday night and the service was dismal. The food took a long time and the bill took FOREVER. It was 2 hours from start to finish. The food was decent, but my wife's Salmon dish was way over cooked, she thought it tasted/looked like it sat under a heat lamp for a while. If you like Johnny's, stick to the one on the south side.

A recent visit will have us returning for more. My husband, myself and our adult son visited Saturday 10/25. It was my son's birthday and he wanted to treat his parents to dinner. It was our first visit and our son choose the resturant. We at first said no as he is on a very fixed income. See he has Cerebral Palsy. He insisted. We were seated with assistance as my son has a walker. We appreciated the help getting into the booth. We were immediately greated with a giant smile from our server. We explained it was our sons treat. Normally at this point we tend to get a not so enthusiastic response. Not this time, our server turned to my son thanked him for choosing Johnnys and talked to him as if she did not even see he was disabled. She walked us through the menu, made suggestions on appetizers, beverages and food. We had a special request for non-alcoholic drinks for our son, she made sure his "lemonade" came to us looking like a martini. We also asked that we had drinks delivered at the time our food came, and they were less than a minute apart. We had food special request, all were accommodated. We enjoyed giant shrimp cock-tail, prime-rib, stuffed shrimp, and chicken. All was PERFECT! Our dinner was finished with a very "birthday" treat. We enjoyed our meal, our time and your staff. The best of the night was when our son paid the bill, we told our server no change was needed. She promptly placed the little black book in her pocket without looking at the tip. And with a huge smile again thanked our son for coming out on his birthday and choosing Johnnys, told him what a nice young man he was for treating, my son told her she was nice, had a pretty smile and did a great job. She then offered her hand to him to shake it and thanked him. Nobody ever offered that to him at any establishment. Nearly brought this mom to tears. Again I want to say the food was incredible, the setting was perfect and our server made my son's birthday unforgettable! So I want to personally thank Pamela! You are a gem.

I'll keep this review short. Myself and five others went to dinner last evening at Johnny's Altoona location. The service was mediocre to poor, and staff seemed overwhelmed on a busy Friday. Had reservations for 7 pm, and wasn't seated for 10-15 minutes even with. I can only imagine what a disaster it would be without one. Was going to order an appetizer, but it took so long for our server to place our order that we decided not to. Everything is highly overpriced, and while the food wasn't too bad (the only reason I'm giving this review 2 stars instead of 1), I can't foresee myself ever wanting to eat there again. It's pretty bad when you ask someone in your party how their meal is and their response is "Not good"! You can find a better experience for your $$$$ elsewhere. In fact, Johnny's has somewhat of an identity complex. It tries to be a fancy restaurant yet is situated next to Bass Pro Shops. While it's nice to have an option like this close by (there's a reason better options are available out West), ultimately you're paying for style over substance. I got more of an Outback Steakhouse vibe from the place than I did an elegant 5 star restaurant.

we went there with friends tonight I had to get my own drinks from the bar once we ordered the appetizer sampler and the sausage bread is amazing The prime rib was the worst I have ever had anywhere

There was a mixup at the host stand - we asked for first available seating then stood in lobby quite awhile until we heard them let other walk-in guests sit on the open patio. Once we asked they said "Oh sure there's lots of tables outside!"... uh, then why did we have to wait? Only other downfall was the food took a bit too long to get to us. These are both things I'd attribute to it being a new joint with kinks to work out. Positives include DELICIOUS food & a great server with sense of humor. Our drinks were always full. The shrimp cocktail included GIANT shrimp. Our table enjoyed soup, salad, pork chop, steak and a dinner salad and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner. The patio is gorgeous. I will plan to come back with friends to lounge on the couches around the fire. Beautiful setting! They have semi-secluded tables which would be perfect for meetings or group dinners.

Portions are small price is high not a very good value. Stopped by for a slice of Tiramisu cake dry, not lite and minimal coffee flavor possibly the worst I have ever eaten. Some things are good don't get me wrong but the amount of the meat items that come with the meal well let's just say most expensive appetizers you can get, and it's supposed to be a meal.

Service and atmosphere were good but food left a little to be desired. There were nine in our group. We started with appetizers that were just okay. My wife had the potato soup and said is was slimy and had way too many green onions on top. I ordered chicken parm. The serving was large. The chicken looked like a frozen breaded serving that was deep fried then covered with marinara and cheese--nothing special. One person in our party ordered salmon. She said it was not that great. Another person in our group had a steak which looked like the winner for the evening.

Let me start by saying we have been to the Johnny's on Fluer several times (more than 20), this was the first time for the Altoona location. We arrived @ 6:15 on a Monday evening. Three in our party. The host asked if we preferred a table or booth, my reply was booth please. After what seemed liked a good 3 minutes of him staring at the screen, he looked up and said "would you prefer a table?" I replied no a booth, to which he responded " ok well then come on". We just all looked at each other and followed. One of the people was a 75 year old woman who has recently has surgery and needed the comfort of a wide booth. To make this short: The restaurant was by no means busy, perhaps 1/3 occupied. The staff seems hurried and confused. The timing of ordering and delivery of food is off. The food was cold and mediocre. This was not a pleasant experience and we will not be back to this location. The positive, when we were walking out I looked at the patio and it looked like a nice place to have a glass of wine.

No Thank You. So me and my wife finally got to scratch Johnny ' s Italian Steak House off our list of Des Moines area Italian. To our amazement or lack there of Johnny ' s turned out to be a very faux Italian experience. The decor looked nice but had a kind of forced classiness to it. I heard nothing but Sinatra playing the whole time. Our server was polite but very stiff and lifeless. I felt he was speaking memorized lines. After skimming through the menu I went strait for the appetizer of calamari. We ordered our steaks sides and salads. Munching on the bread was enjoyable I like a good olive oil black pepper. My calamari arrived and my heart dropped, there was oil all over it. With no fear I dived right it. The marinara and house sauces were good but something about the calamari was wrong. The breading was soggy and falling off. There was too much oil and no crunch, what a shame. My wife's salad arrived in a serving bowl. The server had to think for a second before he remembered I ordered a ceasar salad and he wasn't going to find it in the family style serving bowl. Be right back he promised. My salad arrived a heartbeat later and I forgave him. My salad was kind of bland so I ground some of the fresh black pepper we used for the bread and that brought it up a bit. My wife however said there was way too much dressing on her salad and she couldn't eat it. The steaks were brought out and we got to the meat of the meal. My steak however cooked right, was only mediocre. It tasted decent but not comparable to the price. In fact I felt somewhat cheated as I continued eating. My wife looked worse. She was trying to cut pieces of her steak that was sitting in a pool of oil and topped with what appeared to be a greasy paste. Parmesan crust I'm told... Never before had we wanted to leave halfway through our meals like we did then. We felt awkward and unwelcome. Our food was not worth the money we spent and we were feeling it was time for the check. Paid and left. I tried Johnny 's, I really did. I thought you would be so much better than that. I feel we could have gone to Outback Steakhouse and got the same quality of food for half the price. What a shame.

I have been to all three of the Johnnies Steakhouse's and this one did not live up to the others. The service was poor and the meals mediocre. No where near the other two. It is hard to pick my favorite from the other two but I think I will choose the Johnnies on Fleur. Never been disappointed there.

Mediocre steaks never cooked to the proper temp, how hard is it to hit medium rare? Tried them 2 or 3 times already and it's always the same, overpriced and over cooked.

While our server was personable and the food was ok, the evening was a comedy of errors and inexcusable delays, especially for the price point. (Full disclosure: I have been to Johnny's near the airport several, several times, and have had service that varies between excellent to tolerable. This experience was shockingly bad enough to make public comment.) First up: after a long wait for drinks after placing our order (after our server already apologized for an initial wait), the server said they were out of cups and she was trying to locate some. Out. Of. Cups. ??? At a steakhouse? But still the salads and bread came, sans anything to wash them down. Then, after asking about our appetizer after an even longer delay, our server came back with it, again apologizing that the appetizer and dinner were rung up at the same time, and that she would hold off on the dinner until we finished the appetizer (I'm assuming this meant the use of a heat lamp.) And then, after dinner, and after strongly suggesting a particular dessert, she came back (again after a long wait) and said that they had just sold the last slice. But as the pièce de résistance to the evening: after a fairly long delay after asking for the check, she came back with it and said that she had taken the aforementioned out-of-stock dessert off the check ... Surely, I misheard that, right? She surely wouldn't have suggested taking credit for not charging us for a dessert that was never served, right? And finally, after an intolerable wait to cash out, I went in seek of her to pay on the spot vs any further delay. Most know me as being a highly tolerant diner and understand occasional issues throughout any restaurant experience, especially on a busy evening, but this experience had so many more negatives than positives that I can only hope this review can enlighten management to issues that need to be addressed.

We visited Johnny's Monday night and had a good experience. Our server Michelle did a wonderful job and was very attentive. We visited with the manager Amy and she helped us with a holiday event as well. I and another in our party had the Porterhouse Pork chop and all was very good and another in our party had the Steak Deburgo and he said it was very good as well. The outside area looked very inviting and if it hadn't been so cold and windy we would have liked to been out there by the fireplace. We'll be back, in a couple weeks for sure!!

The hostess and host were nice and seated us fast. The waiter kept forgetting our order and what our drinks were and we waited a long time (30 to 45 minutes to get our dinner order). The food itself was hot and delicious. I think the most frustrating thing was when I looked over my bank account later and look at my receipt with added tip (20%)and the waiter obviously decided to change my tip and added an additional 5.00 which was taken out of my bank account. Will never go there again.

I went the beginning of the week. As an Iowa farm girl I know a good quality steak and have heard great things about Johnny's. Needless to say the one in Altoona was SO incredibly disappointing from the moment we walked in. It was Monday and so slow, however no one was at the host stand. We got seated and our server didn't know what or if the bar could make a chocolate Martini. After checking I didn't get my drink til right b4 dinner. We had, had our appetizers ( that had the wrong sauce) and our salad. Then went to patio to look (that was beautiful). Got back into my drink finally (I would understand if they were busy but no). I ordered a sirloin and it was AWFUL. I was so disappointed. Over cooked and I couldn't chew it. I had to spit half of it out because my jaw hurt and finally gave up. We weren't offered desert so I had to tell the waiter. The tarimasu was freezer burnt. By that point I was done complaining cause it just sounds like I'm unable to pleas. So disappointed in the food and the service

This is an ideal place for lunch. I enjoyed the food as the chef has an excellent command of flavor combinations. The service is fantastic, and they are equipped to remedy anything that falls short of your expectations. My only wish is that I was not seated facing the parking lot.

I had a tough time picking between 2 and 3 stars. But decided to go with 3, hoping that the negative experiences were due to this being a "new location". I've visited 3 times. 1st time: My husband and I were going for a "date night" to just enjoy their outdoor patio & have a drink. The positives - Beautiful patio! We had a wonderful waitress who did an excellent job. The negative - my husband spilled his almost full beer accidently (it was loud & caught the attention of all around us). Despite 3 wait staff being very close by, I had to go over to ask them for a rag to help clean up. Overall, a positive experience though & decided to make a reservation for the next night to take my visiting parents to dinner. The waitress even handled our reservation, very helpful - which was confirmed with hostess, before we left. 2nd time: Dinner with parents & baby. We arrived promptly & it was clear they were extremely busy. The same hostess we spoke with last night was there. I spoke with her, she found our reservation and said that she was going to check on our table. We stepped to the side and waited. She came back to the front - didn't say anything to us & proceeded to help the rest of the people waiting. After she helped two people, I stepped back over and reminded her, she had left to check on our table & never said anything. She again said she was going to check, came back and at that point we were seated. the food was very good. We had a good waiter overall, however, there was one issue which did put a damper on the meal. 3 members of our party had placed an order for a glass of wine with dinner - this order was given to the waiter at the time we ordered dinner. Our food came but our drinks did not. We were halfway through our meal by the time we were able to flag any member of staff to remind them. The waiter apologized and said he would get them. It took an additional 10 minutes. 1 of the 3 was finished with dinner by the time the wine came. The other two (including myself) actually stopped eating dinner so we could enjoy some of the wine with our meal. Once the wine did arrive, my meal was cold. 3rd time: Drinks with husband and friend. Despite the sour note our meal ended the last time, we thought we would try and enjoy their beautiful patio & have a drink. We arrived & immediately were able to sit at the outdoor bar. There was a member of wait staff standing behind there & I asked if we could sit there. She replied yes and gave us a drink menu. That was the last we saw her. We sat for about 5 minutes, looking around to see if anyone was going to help us. A waiter came over and asked if we had been helped. We explained there had been a waitress who gave us a drink menu but we haven't seen her since. He said "Oh, she'll take care of you then" and walked away. After another minute or two, it was clear we were not going to be served. I suggested we go inside & sit at the bar. The bar was empty and we were served immediately. However, that was the last time we were served. Drinks sat empty, we even pushed our empty glasses towards the edge of the bar closest to the bartenders. We also attempted to get their attention to order. They were busy preparing other drinks & there was a small group who came in from the patio (celebrating a birthday - perhaps they came inside for drinks because they were not being served outside either). Still, I didn't think that the number of people they were helping was too much for the two bartenders. We decided to leave & had to ask twice for our check. I really want to like this place. It's close to our house and I think it has a lot to offer. I know that every place has their "off" nights, I"m just hoping that things improve. We will be back to try again, but if we have another negative experience, we will probably hesitate to come back.
