food isn't so great.... ordered the bbq chicken and meat jun plate.... chicken wasn't fresh at all.... seemed like it was previously cooked and then heated up because the chicken was dried out... the meat jun wasn't anything special... I won't be coming back here... to top it off the dinning area was smoky due to the cooking in the kitchen....

OMG! I usually always order BBQ chix at any Korean eatery. Sometimes I do change it up and order the meat jun. I prefer not to eat beef, I do every now and then. Chicken and fish is healthier. The BBQ chicken was great. The portions were plentiful. I would definitely return when I'm craving Korean BBQ chicken and this place is convenient.

Rushed in making food. Was not prepared or cooked properly. Too much flour not enough meat. Too much flour didn't cook the flour. I had to put a star cause it would not let me continue. Dammit!

Date of visit: 8/2/2015 After a long flight, it was about dinner time in San Diego and my mom really wanted a "plate lunch" so my aunt and uncle dropped us off at Y'Kele while they went to Leonard's. I was a little hesitant after the reviews, but decided to make the best of it as we only needed a quick bite. Between five of us, I decided to order two combo plates, which ended up being way more food than we needed. Each combo plate comes with 4 sides that you pick, a couple of scoops of rice, and a large portion of the meat you ordered the combo for. Since the combos were made up of several different side dishes, I'll just list them out by component. Chicken Katsu. This was pretty standard and hit the spot for chicken katsu. While there was nothing terrible, it also wasn't the best chicken katsu. Pretty good in my book and came with a generous portion of katsu sauce. Kalbi Beef. The beef was actually also pretty typical. Again, it tasted like kalbi beef should, but nothing spectacular. This also came with two deep fried dumplings, which was also decent. Kimchi. Maybe it's because I'm spoiled by all of the Korean restaurants in San Diego, but I really did not like the kimchi here. It didn't have any of that pickled spice that you expect from kmichi and was a bit warm (isn't it usually cold?).. Glass Noodles. This was my favorite side dish. It was a simple glass noodle salad with some carrots and a light sauce that went well with the rice and meats. Shoyu Potatoes. These potatoes were cooked until soft and marinated in shoyu. They were slightly sweet, but didn't have much flavor from the shoyu. Bean Sprout Salad. Although my Mom usually likes bean sprouts, she wasn't a big fan of this salad. Cabbage Salad. I wasn't sure what was in this salad as our cashier did not have any clue either. Although it wasn't terrible, it wasn't the best side available. Overall Y'Kele's was just okay. It satiated my hunger, but it is definitely not on my "must visit again" list. I kind of wish that staff knew more about the side dishes, as that would have helped me decide which sides to pick.

I was driving home from work today and was craving Kim Chee soup but I didn't want to drive anywhere too out of the way because that just means more TRAFFIC! Then I remembered there was a Korean type place in Waikele. I ordered the Kim Chee soup to go with 4 sides, Kim Chee 2x and Tofu 2x. I was disappointed by the Kim Chee. Maybe it's just my tastes but I like my Kim Chee to be practically soaking in that red liquid! This Kim Chee was too mild. But I guess if you can't handle spicy, it's fine. The soup itself was disappointing too. It didn't taste like the Kim Chee soup I've had at other places...the broth wasn't even red! It was more orange-brown...and thus...not spicy. Whenever I order Kim Chee soup, if it's not a sit down restaurant, I specifically order it To Go because I like to be able to have a big glass of water (that I can refill from the sink at home) by my side to drink when the spiciness is too much. With this soup, I barely had to drink any water at all! What I theorized is that they make their Kim Chee soups by taking their regular soup base that they use for the Man Doo soups and just dump some KimChee in there. I guess the gist of my review is if you like your Kim Chee to have some spice to it...DO NOT come here!

The food is just OK. This is the closest korean bbq location by my house so yes it would be our first choice...just cause it was convenient...and i never had any complaints with the food. But am just so bummed with my recent experience. I decided to get dinner for the family came here around 5:30pm. I walked in, it was not busy at all just a few customers, ordered my two plates, sat a good 15 minutes waiting for it and left. I got home after 5 minutes waiting to eat my mini meat jun plate, took a bite and noticed it wasn't hot...not even warm. I was that hungry i was just like eh its okay...so i continued taking a few bites more..and i just figured okay wait this isn't right i looked at it..and it was NOT COOKED AT ALL. The dough was white and flaky and the meat just tasted rubbery. I don't know if it was old meat jun or previously frozen and they didn't do a hell of a good job in cooking it. I was just annoyed because i came at a very slow time. Not saying it would be okay if they were busy..its still not acceptable to serve food like this. I did call and demanded a full refund..and i did drive all the way back and showed the lady my plate. She did agree that my food was not even cooked and did give me my money back, with a huge annoyed look on her face though, ugh don't even get me started on service. Lets just say i just tolerated the lack of smiles, lack of greetings, and lack of just normal personality all these times...Huge bummer.

My fiancé went there for lunch today and ordered a meat jun plate and when he bit a piece he bit a large screw!!!! Of all things to find in your food he found a screw in it. Horrible!! I don't know what the cooks are doing there but my fiancé could have choked on that screw and being that he did bite the screw not knowing it was there I hope n pray is tooth is okay! This place deserves no stars.

The girls working the register were slacking hard. They were probably slacking just as hard as the chef in the back. I was having my niece pay for water and it was in a clump of dollar bills. Who knows if there was 4 or 5 dollars in it and I observably watched as she purposefully DID NOT count the dollar bills and put it in the register. If someone does that I usually let a few dollar bills slide because it ain't a reason to get mad. They probably need it more than I do. Everyone knows the procedure, say the price, receive the money and the give the change. The most important part of the exchange is counting the money right in front of the customer making sure they have the correct change. Keep in mind this was in front of my niece and I hope you cash register girls are happy about being shady in front of a young one. It was shady because you usually put the money in the register right after receiving the money.... I hope you're reading this and I hope that you know you're the face of this place and that people trust you with money. One star for the shadiness and the portioning. The other cashiers did better and worked harder. Oh and another thing, these girls pretty much wanted you to do everything and were irritable when you needed something. I asked for a water bottle to buy and the girl automatically said to fill it up myself. If I could give zero stars I would and I'd be happy to do that myself as well

Bought a meat jun combo and i could still taste the flour on the meat jun it turns out it was still raw so e gave it back to get it cooked again so when i got it back and tried it guess what?     Waikele BBQ, I stopped by today and ordered take out. I'm very disappointed in that the meatjun was still powered on the inside. I will take a picture of it and send it to you if I have to! I always loved your meatjun but today what the hell happened D;

If u just wanna get full and not taste...this is the spot for u They give an ample amount of food but it's bland...worst chicken katsu ive ever had...seems like the oil in the vat hasnt been filtered or changed in months....too dark...so cruchy/hard it was like eating kettle chips....the sides sre decent except for the long rice aaarrrggghhhh no flavor....the yook kae jang as well had no flavor....just sustenance here

  • Lance H.

I've read a lot of bad reviews about this place, but I have always experienced good service and great BBQ. I think if you order a normal BBQ plate here along with the choice of side dishes, you will enjoy it. Get the Kalubi.

  • Pua L.

Have always had a good experience here, will continue to come here until differently so I don't base my opinion or whether I go or not on someone else's review. Food is good. Staff is ok, I don't expect them give me a huge warm welcome, they're busy.

  • B A G U L.

0 STARS. Horrible.. Food was so bad it was unbelievable, flies were in the food case. Just look at my picture of the chicken, but it may turn your stomach. Christ how do they stay in business.

  • P C.

Food was "ok", not much flavor. I ordered the meat jun combo and it had two bones chicken thighs and 5 strips of meat Jin for $12.95. Not a good buy...other Korean bbq's give you more meat jun so I felt like I got ripped off. The red Korean sauce that comes with the meat jun was watered down, and the macaroni salad had no flavor, maybe they forgot the salt?? Anyway, not that great for &12.95. Go to yummys or another Korean take out for tastier food and a little more portion for the money! :)

  • Ashley D.

I don't love the long lines. But the food and the wait is totally worth it. Best Korean food close to home. Bbq sandwich is so Ono!

  • Jay9 C.

I love the food here, but the service sucks! Welcoming sucks.. Taking our order sucks.. I said thank you, I get a dirty look. Uhh, okay bye. Thanks for the food though! Cooks did great! Lol ;D

It's still all about the kim chi. Now that I've had the chance to try a bit of the menu, I can honestly say that the only thing I order from Y'Kele is the kim chi. The food isn't bad, but has nothing to recommend it above other Korean restaurants nearby. The wait is long, the service is minimal, and though the portions are generous, the food is bland. I did finally give the kalbi a try. It was ok. I much prefer the food, atmosphere, and service at Song's, so I head there when I am hungry.

  • Kaipo J.

I always pop in here at least twice a month. Place is clean, staff is friendly and food is good. I wish they would make their portions bigger though.

Gross. I've never had korean bbq that sucked this bad. All of my selections for the sides (banchan) were tasteless. I thought it was just my tastebuds being wack from pregnancy, but my husband couldn't even down his and he normally eats everything on his plate. I ordered some kind of combo that had kalbi, bbq chicken and beef. The only thing that tasted fine was the rice. My husband got their fish jun. He didn't even eat a quarter of it. We lost our appetites and just called it quits. This place left me feeling fooled. I hate leaving one-star reviews, but I had to. I won't return again unless they're the last restaurant on earth.

    (1)
  • Paul Y.

Needed a quick place to eat so we came in. We saw the reviews after we ordered. Shux! The food was bland, rice was very undercooked and shoyu potato was too salty.

    (2)
  • Marie M.

We didn't feel welcome here at all, everyone that worked behind the counter were very rude and almost hostile! Food wasn't cooked properly, the Kalbi was extremely rubbery and bland and the sides all tasted the same. I have yet to find a good Korean BBQ restaurant, we will definitely not be returning to this one!

Rude employees, horrible service, dirty feel, ok food. Place needs a renovation and new management. No aloha.

There is business, and there is greed. I spent $10 on lunch there yesterday. For an 8 oz cup of soda, mostly containing ice, they charge $1.15. That is fine. However, when I asked for a refill, despite the fact that I did not even recieve a full beverege upon my initial purchase, they had the audacity to try to charge me another $1.15. This is a greedy business establishment, and I will not be a patron of them in the future.

The bar-b-que beef was pretty good, but the kim chee soup was watery and basically had no flavor. I was really disappointed.

  • Lai T.

My bf and I shared a special combo plate which was actually quite large. Unfortunately, they had run out of the potato salad so for our banchan choices we opted for the cucumber, the corn, the seaweed, and the long rice (which I ignorantly called "noodles" because in my previous life, there was no such thing as long rice). I was surprised at the rather low rating that Y'Kele has received on Yelp. Honestly, it isn't that bad! The food comes out pretty quickly and you really do get your bang for your buck. The combo we shared was easily split and it was a good balance of meats and veggies.

1st, they messed up all the orders (for all 3 of us in the restaurant, which we all had small orders of 1 or 2 plates). 2nd, the food was bland with little to no taste (spicy pork and bbq chicken/meat jun with add on of 4pc mandoo). 3rd, oh snap, they only gave us 2 of our 4 pieces of mandoo we paid for! 4th, while my wife was eating her bean sprouts she found an old and very black bean sprout hiding in there (pic posted). Oh wait, there's 2 of them in there! The free water smelled and tasted a little funny too.... listen to Yelp I said. Don't go there i said... yet my wife still wanted to go. No bueno.

I haven't been here in a while and decided to order a mini meat jun for lunch. I walked in around 12:30 p.m. on a Thursday and was on my lunch break which meant I was hoping I would at least be able to pick up a lunch to rush back to work with! It took them 10 minutes to even take my order and there was only 1 person in front of me. They took my order, I waited a good 25 minutes when I noticed they started calling people's orders that ordered 5-10 minutes ago including meat jun orders! Me and a few other customers that ordered 25 minutes ago were like where the heck are our orders???? The employee then told me that they haven't even STARTED on cooking my mini meat jun yet. 25 minutes after I ordered. What the hell?? She then proceeded to bring out a meat jun for someone else that just ordered. Um, how could she tell me they haven't started cooking my meat jun yet when I told her I ordered 25 minutes ago, yet bring out other people's orders who were only waiting 5-10 minutes? Since they hadn't STARTED cooking my mini meat jun 25 MINUTES AFTER I ordered, I was told it would be a wait. I was pissed! I had to get back to work. I asked for a refund and walked out. They were not even crowded. Employees were rude. I wasted 35 minutes here, which was my entire lunch break and had no lunch. No apology. Nothing, just rude employees. They didn't think it was a big deal that they hadn't started cooking my mini meat jun order 25 minutes later. I have never been to any restaurant that had not started cooking your mini meat jun order 25 minutes after ordering. The employee rudely gave me back a refund. Super rude as if I was the problem. Ridiculous! I will never be back here again.

The one time I go someplace to eat without checking yelp first in MONTHS and this happens. I should've known better. Decided to come here last minute because we were in a hurry to eat lunch and other places were packed. How do these people stay in business?? Walked into the restaurant and was immediately assaulted with STRONG mold / mildew smell. It smelled awful, but my hubs was hungry and insisted it wasn't that bad. The ceiling vents had black residue all around and on the metal areas. I ordered Mandoo Kook Soo, hubs ordered Meat Jun, and we got two large drinks. It took a really long time to get our food. The lady that you order your vegetables from and scooping rice wasn't busy at the time so I tried getting her attention so that we could have our drinks that were already full and sitting behind her to drink while we wait. She ignored me saying "excuse me" like four times, before my husband yelled "WE'RE THIRSTY GIVE US OUR DRINKS NOW PLEASE!". She did but shot us some mean stink eye. When I order food, and they ask me for here or to go, I assume it's so they know to put it on a tray, or in a bag. Not so, apparently "to go" means you get a strong styrofoam container, and "for here" means you get a crappy weak floppy small paper plate. This was very disappointing, especially since all of the liquid from the veggies they scoop and leave on the counters (without any food cover exposed to all the flies and whatnot) makes the paper soggy and soaked through. I have no idea why this place stays so busy, the food is awful. The only flavor my man doo kook soo had was reminiscent of dirty sock. My husband kept repeating "How do you mess up meat jun??" Right when we started eating, it seems the employees realized the place smelled bad and tried to cover it up with ammonia. The only thing worse than moldy mildew smell is moldy ammonia smell in an uncirculated room on a hot day. It actually turned my stomach. We struggled with our food for a good twenty minutes before giving up and trying to get something to put it in to take home with us. It wasn't good, but our pets might eat the meat. My husband went up to ask for a "to go" container (assuming we'd get something sturdy to take our food home in.) She covered it with bits of small pre-cut aluminum foil. It took her four pieces and not a one actually reached from one side of the plate to the other. Shortly after we returned home from running our errands and lunch, I opened the food container to find the meat jun had the consistency of shoe leather. My husband said it turned his stomach, and I wasn't sure if it was the rancid smells, or something with the food, so we threw it out. I was afraid it might poison my dog. Worse thirty bucks I've ever spent!!

I'm sorry I hate giving out low stars but this place just wasn't up to par. First off the customer service was horrid. Talk about lacking in manners and not being helpful and nice. It wouldn't be so bad if I got a great greeting but it really seemed like they did not want our business. It was a very unpleasant feeling. We were hungry and wanted to grab some food. We wanted Korean and this is the only place in our area. Also, this is local Korean and not like real authentic Korean like one can find in town in the KOREAmoku area. We ordered meat jun and tofu soup. Both were OK not tasty at and the banchans (vegetables sides) they have are also missing in flavor. The food was ok not stellar too bad the service wasn't better which would have helped. I am not sure if I would try this place again. Since this was my second visit and both times were just ok.

I would like to overall say the food was okay but the service wasn't so great. Came in and sat ourselves, no one had greeted us and the table was dirty. We got our food fast but there was no interaction with us (the customer) and there was no class. First My husband got me a bottle of water and it was warm so he went to go get me a cup, they gave me a small cup (this wasn't the bad part). I finally got a big cup of water and ice and then I saw a speck of something black in my cup. I told my husband to help me get it out; when he then noticed a greenish black thing at the bottom floating around. I had asked for a new water, which you'd except them to have the courtesy to be smart and polite enough to just say sorry and make a whole new water but no the young girl dumped the cup out and used the same cup the black things were in and handed it back to me. I was going to let it go but my husband couldn't, so he then went to ask for a new cup and the older woman did the same thing by just refilling the same old cup with water. We then finished our food and asked for a box for the leftovers and they said they charge for boxes. So we just about had it and left with a plate. I suggest taking out and not eating in.

Gross. My company ordered a bunch of bentos from here as a peace offering for working on New Years Eve. Everything was super salty! Like, im gonna pass kidney stones later type of salty. Mamasan didn't drain the bean sprouts properly so the water mixed with the mac salad and well.. it didn't taste good. $11 times 27 workers equals a huge waste of money!

These "Korean" meals are darn oily and burnt. Aish~ We came an hour before it closed. When we went up to order they told us there was enough rice for only 2 plates. My mom was mad. Chinese mommy needs her rice in every meal. Haha. We wanted to order 3 but decided to get 2 plates because mommy no like sub the rice with noodles and other stuff. Anyways, we ordered the kalbi and chix combo plate, and the meat jun plate. I tried the bbq chicken, it was oily and burnt. But sorta good I guess. The side of long rice was okay, nothing special. My parents think Yummy tastes better than here. It was around $10 a plate.

This little eat-in place deserves a chance! After checking genki sushi's wait time- my hubs and I strolled a little farther down and stumbled into this quiet, not too busy place.. Confession-- we were suspicious as to why it was so quiet -- (is this place terrible?!!) but we were hungry and decided to give it a try. I got kalbi mini plate and the hubs got meat jun and BBQ chicken combo plate. Our mini plates come with 2 banchan choices and they looked fresh-- aka- not sitting there looking slimy and gross! While waiting for our food- the restaurant filled up with young hipstery looking peeps and families-- all local- no tourists! We got our food pretty quickly- and I have to say -- the hubs and I really enjoyed our food! The banchan tasted fresh- and my kalbi was pretty yummy! I took a bite off the hubs' plate and it was all tasty as well! Well done Y'kele bbq! 4 stars because our table was a little dirty -- wiped it down myself.. No worries though! We would eat here again!

Feels like a fast food diner, brightly lit and decently clean. The food is flavorful. The Bi bim kook soo was spicy and plentiful, though I was hoping for a hot soup version. Price wise is comparable to other shops. Being primarily a take out place, the only service is the self served free ice cold water. 3 stars for the convenience but with so many other establishments around, you'd have to be in the neighborhood to find yourself here.

If I am craving korean food...and I am nearby and my stomach is extremely growling to eat...then I will go to Y'kele BBQ... other than that... I've experienced better. Potions here are so-so. What I love ordering is a Kalbi plate...mini or regular, just depends on my appetite. Although I love kalbi to death...eating kalbi here is like eating rubber that even the plastic knife they give you can't cut through it. It's either overly cooked or undercooked or just junk meat. IDK what it is. I do like it's location because it is located in Waikele Shopping Center. On the bright side..I have always had good service here. Two stars for the food cooking...three stars for the service.

Had a take out BBQ beef plate today. It was great- lots of food. I picked double long rice, shoyu potatoes & kim chee for the ban chan sides ( there were a lot of choices). All was sooo Ono & could not finish. I don't know why all the bad reviews. This place has great Korean food. I must say though, the girl taking the order could use a charm school refresher! That was my only gripe, but no big deal since the food is so good.

  • Misty P.

For those of you wondering, "Why did it taste so good before?" "Why is everything burnt or weird tasting?" Not to be full of it, but my mom used to be the cook there a while back...when it was good. She hasn't been there for almost more than 5 years now. Quality went down, and I wouldn't be surprised if they hired a non Korean 19 year old to cook Korean fast food... Go to Tasty BBQ in Mililani instead...she's over there now.

The service and place are a hot mess!! The food is so greasy. They want $9 for 2 pieces of meat jun and some lukewarm vegtables. I will never be back and waste my money at this place.

Chicken and steak are very good. I really liked the meat, chicken was the best. Large portions. 2 people can share a plate so it is a great value. Counter service was friendly and helpful, happy to explain the different veggies. Large selection of veggies, local fare.

Ordered a Regular plate Meat Jun the other week and got really paper thin teri meat packed with some sort of very thick yellow egg batter with a lot of raw flour that was not even mixed in well. The only flavor that you could you taste was the raw flour. should have just returned it for money back after the First bite.

My chicken katsu was raw! Like really raw. I wanted to vomit! When I took it back I got attitude from the little b***h. She opens the register for my refund and is grabbing the money so harshly some flew out and puts the money on the counter. So I slam my hand on the money and stare at her. Soooo much wanted to come out of my mouth but, I had my three little ones with me. Never will I ever go back.

When deciding where to go, today, I should've sticked with Jurisons. Walked into this place to a worker stuffing her face w/ food, ordered my food, sat down and then went back up for napkins and a cup of ice and she was stuffing her face, AGAIN. Once I got my food I cut a piece to give it to my daughter, right before I put it in her mouth, I noticed there was a HAIR cooked into the meat jun!! The food didn't have much taste. I've had better. Probably wont go back.

Hit and miss best describes this place. The only reason why I go here is because it's so close to home when I have a craving for Korean food and the sides of veggies. Likes: The meat jun is usually good, but I've had some misses with it. I like the cabbage, kimchi, and choi sum. Dislikes: The kalbi portion was mostly bone. Also, they've served me spoiled mac salad a couple times. I make sure I check before I leave the store when I get take out now. Parking is a pain around dinner time, so I usually just park near KFC and cross the street. I can't say I have a favorite here because a lot of the things are so-so. However, because the location is so convenient for me, when that craving hits and I'm lazy, I'll phone in an order of meat jun, pay with credit card(this is a good thing too!), check mac salad, and head on out.

Bi Bim Bap! See picture! I asked the lady if the egg was "sunny side up," she said yes, so I ordered extra egg. Ended up with this! Plus I got it in a bowl, when the picture in the menu was a plate! What a rip off!! I will NEVER Eat here again! Bad service! Bad food!!

PARTY OF 5 ENVIRONMENT Typical place to eat plate lunch. It was clean and pleasant. FOOD I ordered the Beef Kalbi with steamed rice and my side dishes were bean sprouts and the seaweed salad. I love it. No gripes at all......no complaints. It was good. SERVICE I had to order it at the counter. They were patient and nice. Overall, I am satisfied.

It's been years since the last time I was here. It's going to be a long time till I come back. BBQ beef dry and tasteless, meat chun taste like burnt eggs and they were burnt. Not much good to say about this place. I won't be back.

Good korean food in Waikele, hmmmmm, well, it is good enough. Good enough for me to order on the phone, book it out of work on my 30 minute lunch break, pick it up, BOOK it back and eat it in 15 minutes. Now if that doesn't say anything then I dunno what will. I usually order the bi bim bap. Rice covered in veggies, some bbq beef, and a fried egg. Add in some red chili paste and it is all good. I have tried their meat juhn, eh, it is ok, good enough. The BBQ chicken is ok too. Everything here is "ok" The counter people are very quick and helpful (things I like a plate lunch place). The parking is a bear on the weekends or afternoons since there are so many places that use this SMALL parking area. You might be better off parking by KFC and walking up. If you are on this side of the island, shopping at the outlets, and don't want to eat something fast food, and are kinda tight on your budget. Go check this place out. It will satisfy you. 040/365 yelpykimchee challenge....

Brah so disappointed tonight. First of all, I placed my order my number was 18. 19 was called, 20 was called 21 was called all the way till 25 was called. They finally realized I was still standing there & worked on my order. After waiting a good 45 mins, I finally got my food. Get home, all my sides was wrong. Ordered meat & fish jun. Only got meat jun. So disappointing. Must've been someone else's food I got.

I was shopping at Waikele with my parents who have never had Hawaiian-style Korean food (I've never found meat jun or fish jun outside of Hawaii, even my Korean friends from the mainland have no idea what I'm talking about). I decided to take them here even though I didn't know much about the quality - my husband has taken me to some really great Korean places here in Hawaii. Overall, it was OK. I got a meat jun plate, my Mom got the fish jun and my Dad got the Korean miso soup. He loves Korean food and likes to try different things. The pickled cucumbers weren't spicy at all and the Korean miso soup was pretty bland. The meat jun was alright, but I've definitely had better. Portions are good, but the quality was so "eh" that I probably would never go there again.

This place serves some good tasting Korean BBQ plates but the prices are a little ridiculous. I enjoy buying the vegetarian plate which consists of 4-5 choices of side veggies but the total can run up to $9 which is a little much just for a plate of veggies.

the food is good but the quantity is not that great they give so little food for $8 mini other places you can buy a mini plate for $5-$6 n they give more food than this place . this place is too pricey . I'll never go back again not really worth it

Oh boy....where do I begin. Ok, against my better judgement and all the not so positive reviews on yelp I decided to follow my craving for tofu soup. Parking at Waikele is always a pain especially during dinner time, oddly enough I found one right away (this shoudlve been a sign). I ordered my family's food from Jurison's and made my way over to Y'kele BBQ. I ordered the tofu soup meal which comes with 2 scoops of rice and 4 sides. I got the kimchee, cucumber kimchee, chop chae and mac salad. The cucumber kimchee wasn't half bad...didn't eat the kimchee or chop chae (but really how do you mess those up) and was advised by my BF not to eat the mac salad as it tasted "old". I did have to ask about my order since everything was flying out of the kitchen and really how long does it take to throw some veggies and liquid into a bowl??? Anyway, on to the main course and the reason I sacrificed the chance at a good meal last night. There were 3 chunks of tofu, over ripe zucchini, green onions, round onions and oddly shreds of beef (since I think of tofu soup as sort of a veggie dish). The broth was of an unnatural red color and was very intimidating at first. There was WAAAAAAY to much oil in the broth. I mean disturbing, inedible amounts. I actually dumped out quite a bit before eating. The broth was spicy but had such an odd flavor. Nothing like i've tasted in korean food. The BF said its probably flavor from the meat they had in it mixed with whatever oil and spices they put in to create the broth. This is one place I can honestly say I will not be giving a second chance and really have no desire to try anything else on the menu. :(

Employees were rude. Ordered a mix plate, mini meat jun and 2 Arizona ice teas. Apparently our plates wasn't done yet because the people who ordered their plates after us got theirs before ours. So I walked up to check on our plates and only the mix plate was done, like seriously i only ordered a mini plate?? What's so hard about making a mini meat jun. Anyways so we finally got our plate and when I opened my plate I noticed some of my meat jun didn't even have meat in it and it was just all egg. My boyfriends side order of tofu was bland and to top it off our arizona ice teas was warm. So when I asked for a cup of ice the lady said, "oh for what?" Like wtf, so I told her our drinks were warm, and being in customer service myself I would apologize and take the warm drink and give a new cold one. But instead of apologizing and giving a regular size cup of ice she gives me this small ass cup and puts a few cubes of ice in it lets just say I'm pretty pissed off with this place. Never coming back.

Decided to eat here because jurisons was crowded. Unfriendly staff and like an older post had hair in my choi sum. Probably wont be back. Also BBQ chicken doesn't have much taste and meat jun was also bad. Stick with yummys

Brah this place is hella nasty. Food was either tasteless or just plain horrible. I Had The BBQ Beef that was like eating paper. I think I'd rather eat the binder paper. I went to the restroom to wash up only to find cups and plates stored in there needless to say I did throw up a Lil.. never will I go there again and will actively tell people to avoid that place unless they get their $h** in order.

What happened to Y'Kele Korean BBQ? Food is very expensive considering the portion size. We ordered the regular kalbi, and a meat jun plate. The kalbi was so thin I could almost see through it. I was surprised when I got home and opened the mean jun plate and saw that there was only two thin pieces of meat jun. The veggie selection was just O.K., but for around $10.00 a plate this was not worth it. I guess we'll look around for a better fast food Korean BBQ.

Where do I start. It's bad. I mean it's just bad. We ordered barbecue chicken and beef and they were both really salty. The side dishes were just as salty with absolutely no taste. I understand this is fast food korean but it doesn't even deserve one star rating. I stopped here tonight because this place was the nearest korean eatery. Choices are very limited when you are shopping in waikele outlet stores. What a big mistake. Please save your money and stay away from this place.

We should have known better...we saw the 2 1/2 stars but we dismissed it. What a waste of money. So I ordered the meat jun/kalbi combo and my gf got the Y's special. I thought the kalbi was good but my gf thought it had too much taste. My meat jun was horrible. The meat was junk, dry and the sauce was junk. The worst meat jun EVER. The vegetables were HORRIBLE. They had no taste what so ever. NO TASTE!!! I had beat sprouts = JUNK, cabbage = JUNK, choy sum = JUNK, kim chee = not bad but not good. The WORST vegetables I have ever had and I eat quite a bit of korean food. All in all a gigantic disappointment. I am never coming here again...especially with Jurisons next door.

I don't know if it was because tonight was busy but they messed up our order. I ordered meat jun with kalbi, I only had one piece of kalbi. My mom ordered the same thing but she had 2 pieces of kalbi. My dad ordered kalbi with chicken, they forgot his chicken!! And his mondu! We were really disappointed because we always come to eat here when we are in the area. My mondu was also cold!

If you wanna talk good food for your money, this is the place. You can feed my hungry family of 4 on $20 easily. Order the chicken katsu, kalbi, spicy pork, and bbq chicken in two combo plates both with add on mandoo and you have yourself a FEAST. This isn't the greatest korean food, but its well worth the price tag. So if you're really hungry and in the area, go here. The side veggies are good too, the sweet potato and long rice are super good. Maybe if the meat jun, my favorite korean dish was a little better, they would get 4 stars. but for now, will go back, when im starving.

They finally take credit cards after I've been coming here for 4 yrs. It's good to try different sides like seaweed, tofu, popular clear needles, broccoli, daikon strips, corn, potatoes, kim chee x 2 kinds.... We usu get the $8.45 kalbi plate that comes w 4 sides + 2 scoops of rice.

Stay away!! Keep your young kids and elder folks away from this place if you love them! I ordered to go, a mini shrimp plate and a regular meat Jun with chicken Katsu plate on Sunday Feb 26 2012 at 615pm. I picked out my vegetables and Mac salad and waited 5 minutes for them to prepare the cooked portion of my order. If a place gets your food that fast, something's wrong, especially if they have customers in the restaurant. But I didn't think nothing of it. First, my fried shrimp was cold. It couldn't have gotten cold on a 15 minute drive home, could it?? Then I took a bite of it, and the thing was RAW!! Not rare, it was raw. The breading on the outside was burnt, how was the shrimp raw? Who knows? Second, the meat jun tasted like it was cooked earlier in the day, and they just reheated it in the microwave. The egg was all RUBBERY! Third, the mac salad tasted spoiled. Seriously, I wouldn't come back to this place no matter how much I crave korean food in this part of town. I even tipped them! Should I go back and take my tip from their tip jar?

I rarely went there, but recently I have visited twice in one week! I got the combo plate for a around 9 bucks but it comes with a good portion of food & you choose two types of meat!!! When I tried the katsu, I was in heaven! It wasn't burnt but some pieces of meat may have been marinated in teriyaki sauce for the BBQ chicken. The second time I went, I ordered a side of chicken katsu for my mother & the wait was around 15-20 minutes. Not bad considering I ordered two sides and it is a lot & they make it on hand. A bit pricey for a side ($8.00) but really good. The workers looked mean, but they seem fairly nice.

"Meh. I've experienced better." My thoughts exactly. It's ok, just doesn't stand out. I'd much rather go to Song's Korean BBQ just down the street. The food was ok, I ordered a meat jun plate. They then let you pick a couple sides (long rice, tofu, mac salad, etc), they put the sides on the plate and then pass it to the back kitchen to add the meat before sending it back out. So the sides were cold. I got Tofu and Long Rice and they were both decent I would have just preferred the long rice be warm or hot. And then the meat jun was just ok, nothing that great. Just seemed sort of slopped together. But at least it was hot and still pretty tasty. All-in-all it's just an average experience. You can get much better korean bbq close by so I'll be going elsewhere next time I want Korean BBQ. Check out my reviews for Jenny's Drive-In and Song's Korean BBQ; both much better options for similar style food. And both are just down the street.

So I've lived in waipahu for a while now and had this sudden craving for meat jun and this was the first place that popped into my head, so I thought why now give them a shoot. Ordered my food went home only to see two small burnt pieces of meat jun. Don't think I'll be coming here again.

You know that feeling when you can't make decisions because you're so darn hungry? Well, I had been ignoring those hunger pangs for a good half hour as we meandered through Party City which is next door to Y'Kele BBQ. I think I looked at every pink thing in the store. I finally realized that a) I was not able to make decisions b) My hunger was affecting my decision making power. We wandered outside to hunt down some food. We skipped past the Japanese place and went straight to Y'Kele BBQ. The menu plastered on the windows made it easy for us to decide whether we wanted to go inside and order. We ordered the Meat Jun /Chicken Katsu combo and had a side of Jap Chae /glassy noodles. When we got our order, I told my husband that "This is the BEST meat jun I have ever eaten!" Mind you, my experience with korean food is very limited, but still, I recognize good food when I come across it. My husband just scoffed and reminded me that I was starving a minute ago and anything, even stale crackers taste pretty good when you're hungry. So I asked him, "well, what do YOU think of this meat jun?" and he said, "it's not bad. not bad at all..." So, if you add "BEST meat jun" + "not bad at all" = pretty decent meat jun. Or so I say in my humble estimation. Judging from other people's experiences, this place does fairly well. I would also think given the option of eating at Chili's or KFC which are in the same strip mall area, I would take Y'Kele BBQ over either of those any day.

I hate giving a one star to anyplace, read below for the reasons. I used to go to this take out place ALL THE TIME! My last visit is EASILY over a year and half ago.....and maybe this review may explain why. My wife and I went in for lunch, but only she was going to eat because I had already eaten at home. Its Thursday lunch "rush" I guess......1:15ish. I thought, "wow...busy place" (cause all the tables were taken except one) but when I got in, I realize that a lot of people werent eating, they were waiting. The only thing my wife ordered was a Fish Jun plate- to go. We sat in the only table that was available waiting......and waiting....and waiting. "How long has it been?" At LEAST 10 minutes (no exaggeration). Im thinking it might not take that much longer. So I bust out my phone and start timing. In the meantime, we see people that order AFTER us getting BBQ plates, getting "phone orders" picked up when we know THAT order was called in after we already placed our order. From the time I started timing, it was 19 FRICKIN MINUTES! So, in reality, we were waiting ABOUT 30 minutes for one of the EASIEST items to cook! My wife was so upset and so starved that she ate it inside the restaurant. To make things worse, there was a hair in her side dish! We arent that picky, we realize i was just a hair....but we were really disappointed. The cashier was also rude to the cooks in the back. Being the cooks were taking so long, it may have only been 1 cook. The quality of foods wasnt that great either. The fish jun was more BROWN that it was YELLOW. Cooking the fish on a dirty grill! The funny thing too was that the cashier was telling phone order people that it'd take about 10 minutes for plates to be ready, when there were at least 4 of us who had waited 30 minutes! Did I make a complaint? No, I didn't. I think I'll make a better statement about my experience by yelping it AND by never going back there again! Go next door to Jurisson's Inn instead! Because of this place, im creating a list for "Places im never going back to"

When I landed in HNL and my brother picked me up, we headed back to his place in Waipahu. It has been a while since I was back home and as we drove down H1, talking story, I said, "So where we goin' grind?(eat) My treat!" He asked me where I wanted to go, I said any place ono(good) and local. I didn't want to eat anywhere that had any mainland connection. IMO, to experience any place one travels to, you need to eat what the people eat, good or... 'different. So, when I'm back home in Hawaii, I goin' eat all the local food I can. Also, not too many places in Orange County can compare to real island kine grinds. We went to Y'kele. Good choice. We ordered the Spicy Pork, small versus the regular. For one small it was a decent amount. He told me the regular was pretty huge. I was happy to see that they now accept credit cards, I was saving my cash for the Swap Meet at the Aloha Stadium on Wednesday. - Aloha Food: 5 Ambiance: 3 Service: 3 Value: 5

First of all this place is a ripoff! For their prices the plates should be a lot bigger & more appetizing. Their Mac salad tasted sour the last time I ate there. I thought maybe they just put vinegar in it or something & told myself not to order the mac salad again but then I tried their Choy sum & cucumber Kim Chee. The Choy sum had no seasoning & the cucumber Kim Chee tasted old too. The meat jun was mostly egg. After that experience I was convinced not to go back but my boyfriend decided to phone order some plates on his way home but he told me they only had Choy sum & cucumber Kim Chee left for sides so I asked him if he had just placed the order & he said yes right before I called you. So I told him to go zippys & I'll call to cancel from this junk place. So I call them up & tell her the order and she was perfectly well mannered until I asked her to cancel. Then SHE HUNG UP ON ME. I couldn't believe it! So I called her back and asked her "Did you just hang up on me?" She said "You wanna cancel yeah? Okay bye!" Rude! Bye Felicia! Never wanna deal with this place again!

OK, so this rating is for when I ate here in January, and last trip home in September. When I came home in January, this was the first plate lunch I had in like, 3 years...it was good. I remember coming here in high school and it was super good...Now, I don't know if that's because I hadn't had a plate lunch in so long that my tastebuds are now "haolefied", or that the quality was just going downhill anyway. I had the Chicken Katsu plate with kim chee, mac salad, bean sprouts, and corn. Huge portions at a reasonable price. Last trip home, Mom and I were waiting to eat at Kunio, but I was starting to get mad because it was taking too long. I thought that I would settle for Korean instead. So, we walked in, and there was an overwhelming smell. To me, it smelled like vomit. Was definitely not food smells, or even cleaning product smells, it smelled like someone had barfed all over the place. It didn't seem to bother the 20 or so people that were eating in there...but I had to leave. This nose knows. Probably will not be back given that last experience...I know of better Korean places that taste better and don't have nasty aromas.

Food: Good as usual. Kal-Bi, Meat Jun, Man-doo were all good. The sides were fine as well. I just wish more places had taegu as a side option. Service: Last night was the exception to what is normally good service. We waited for over 30 minutes for our food. It was busy, so I expected a wait. At about the 20 minute mark I noticed 2 of 3 plates were ready, but we were still waiting for the 3rd, a bowl of Man-doo Kook Soo. The order for that was never even received by the kitchen and nobody at the counter bothered to check on it the entire time. When I finally cut back into line to ask about my order I was told it would be 5 more minutes for the Man-doo Kook Soo. Meanwhile, my other 2 plates are cooling rapidly. I had to again cut back into line to alert the counter help that my Man-doo Kook Soo was sitting there on the counter ready to be packaged up. Past visits were 4's and 5's, so I can't justify a 1-star in the overall picture, but last night was definitely a 1-star performance. Fool me once, shame on you... I hope I don't have another 1-star visit the next time!

Dropped in after a morning of shopping in Waikele. All the other restaurants were packed and this place had open tables. Husband ordered meat jhun and I had the bbq chicken/kalbi combo. The veggie selection was your typical, chop chae, potato, mac salad, ogo, etc. Those weren't too bad. I was happy just eating the veggies, honestly. As for the main plates, the meats were tough and chewy, I swore I chewed on the same piece of kalbi until my jaw could not take it anymore. I ended up wasting a $9 plate of meat. The chicken was also dry and chewy as was hubby's meat jhun meat. Maybe it was the cook that day, but honestly, I've had a lot better!! As for the service, oh, I have had better. Two girls there, both ignored us standing there waiting to order. Rather unfortunate experience...

Korean takeout can offer good healthy fast food options. The fare is typical consisting of BiBimBap, Kalbi, Meat Jun, and Tofu Soup. I had the Yook Gae Jang, a spicy beef soup with egg, rice noodles, bean sprouts, and green onions, which can come with rice and more side vegetables/starches for a $1 more. The broth was the best part of the dish. The stringy dried beef was the most unsavory part. How can beef dry out in soup? It seems like an impossible question, but I can assure you this does happen. The tables and booths were clean without the sparkle. The service is efficient without the smile. The food options are guaranteed not to knock your socks off, but will fill the hunger void after a long morning of shopping at the Waikele Outlet.

It convenient to my house....portions are large, but my only complaint is that they tend to burn my spicy pork...I really don't care for blackened (charred) meat.

this would be your typical korean fast food place w/ lots of sides and meats. The food is above average and the portions are generous, will definitely fill your stomach and the prices are reasonable compared to other places. I always order the combo of Kalbi & Meat Jhun, plentiful and pretty tasty

I had a hard time deciding what to eat until we turned the tv station to a Korean drama and BAM! we decided to eat korean food! We ended up eating at Y'Kele Korean BBQ. I ate here a few times before but have not written a review on them. I ordered the BBQ chicken plate with a side of mandoo and my fiance ordered the BBQ chicken and meat jun plate. The portions were HUGE! I liked the seaweed and the bean sprouts. The cucumber kim chee was not that hot but still good for the price. The prices are really good for the amount you receive. My favorite is the BBQ chicken and the mandoo. Food was pretty tasty. This place is pretty good!

Unfortunately, Y'kele Korean BBQ is the only Korean take out establishment available in Waikele. On several occasions they got our order wrong, deleting extra mondoo that we paid for, substituting other meat items for the ones that we ordered. When recieving our orders, the plastic bag is always tightly knotted. We are suspecting that it is to make it difficult for us to "check" our order before we leave. If you are in the Waikele area and need a quick plate lunch fix, go to Jurison's Inn. The quality is much better.

Whenever I'm craving for Korean BBQ I usually come here out of convenience. I always order their spicy pork and kalbi. Both are good, but I have had better elsewhere. However, their kimchee is awesome. I love the flavor and it doesn't taste like the ones that you can buy at the store. Just don't do take out when it's almost closing time....they can be very chang with their portions.

Came here for brunch (4/3/12) with my cousins, and I believe we were the first customers here. I didn't like it because the long rice had no taste at all and not to mention that I found plastic in my food and my cousin found hair in her rice. Nasty. I wouldn't recommend.

Mini Chicken Katsu, no rice. Yummy. Crunchy katsu and their veggies are good too. You get three choices with a mini and no rice. And it's really spelled: Y'Kele Korean BBQ.

This place used to be my favorite but they lost something. I don't know what. Maybe it's a combination of things. They still have huge plates. Their portions on the side orders seem to be really small though. Their meat jun is ono and the spicy pork can be a hit or miss. I used to order their cucumbers but last time it was really salty. Their was so much salt, that you can hear it crunch in your mouth. They also charge 25 cents if you want to take your left overs to go. We brought my little cousin's there and they had to come back to the table to get some change. We probably won't go back but the food is good in that location. If we're out there and we're starving, we'll go back.

I've been a Waikele resident for the past 10 years. I was a fan of the the restaurant when it used to be under a different management and called the Tasty BBQ. Since the new ownership and hence the Y'kele Bbq, I've not been a fan. Where Tasty boasted of a long line of eager and happy customers awaiting to sink their teeth into freshly made, well-marinated meats/veggies and delicious soups, there's now a restaurant boasting delicious and enticing food only on the pictures plastered on its windows. I'm not a harsh critic because I did give this place plenty of chances before writing this. My favorite Korean soup dish is the Yuk Gae Jang. It's supposed to be made of soup stock from brewing beef for hours. Then the seasoning is added along with vegetables, noodles, and shredded beef. But Ykele's Yuk Gae Jang tastes as if it just throws in water and chili seasoning with disproportionate amounts of meat and vegetable/noodles. I only take out from this restaurant when I don't want to drive too much away from home fro Korean food. Out of the 10 times I've ordered this from Ykele, I've not been satisfied once. The low quality and care that go into making this dish and probably others just vary and are also a hit or miss. One day it could be just junk. Another day it could be just so upsetting that I even gave this place another chance. Today is that day. As soon as I opened up the package my husband brought home and tasted the side dishes and the soup, I just wanted to march down there and give it back to them and tell them to tastes their food! I told my non-Korean husband that compared to the original version of this soup, Ykele's concoction is less than dog food! On some days, even the potatoes are only half cooked. The seaweed, rather than sweet and sourish, simply inedible. Today was that day. Yuck!! My husband's favorite is the spicy pork. I usually make it at home for home, but since getting pregnant, not. No matter how much he wants spicy pork, he WILL NOT go to Ykele as this dish is a hit or miss too; it's undermarinated and under seasoned. So today, he went to McDonald's drive thru. First of all, if you're reading this because you want to know if this place is worth your time and money, it depends. If all you care about is quantity, go for it. But if you care about quality AT ALL, here is a little education and my recommendation: Any Korean restaurant will have the same fried mandoo because they all get it from the same frozen mandoo supplier. So they can't go wrong on this dish. Most people like the chicken katsu, and they can't go to wrong on this one either unless the sauce is bad or the breading is too thick. You can't have good Korean food at this place because the only thing Korean about it is the menu. The employees in the back making the food certainly are not and very untrained in it. If you want goooood the bomb meat jun, check out Young's Kalbi in Aiea. You'll pay a couple of dollars more, but you definitely get the best of quality and quantity. The same sauce to marinate the meat jun is used to marinate the kalbi, chicken, and the teriyaki beef so if the meat jun is good so is the rest. Personally, Ykele is the worst place to go to for decent Korean food.

I must have come here at the wrong time. No wait, it was dinner time around 7pm. That shouldn't be a wrong time for any restaurant. We the side veggies were of skimpy pickings and they weren't at all fresh. The kimchee was overripe and fermenting. The rice was mushy and cold. The meat was tough. I haven't come back since that first time about a year ago. Why did I wait so long to write a review? I guess so that I wouldn't be so harsh on them as time heals most wounds.

first of all, the name really makes me smile. ykele. haha. located in the WAIkele shopping center by baskin robbins. good meat jun and bbq pork. their spicy pork is my favorite. for some reason, i feel like they only have female workers, but my guy friends never complain about that. they give good portions at pretty decent prices. we like to go here after getting out of class.
