Still haven't gotten the hang of yelping...see my comments under tips- bottom line...YUM!

Love, love, love their green tea, taro, and haupia - the local flavors. The rest you can pretty much get from other ice cream stores or Longs. It's clean and well lit. However, the service can be slow and the sitting is not comfortable. Also, we were freezing inside, not just next to the ice-cream counter, but in the furthest away corner. So we didn't hang out.

Lemon custard and strawberry cheesecake ice cream was my weapon of choice on our first time visit to Dave's. I wasn't super impressed by the flavor choices available. I understand they make their own ice cream but unfortunately i really wasn't into most of the selection offered. The lemon custard was decent; I think I liked the strawberry cheesecake only slightly more. If I'm staying in Waimanalo again, I may decide to come here if I don't want to drive to Bubbies or go to Safeway for Ben and Jerrys.

Went here to get mint chocolate chip, my favorite. Unfortunately it was a let down, and did not taste very good. Though I did sample the cookie dough ice cream, and that tasted really good!

Great coconut ice cream selection Chinese girl swears they have best shave ice on Oahu

I've been to this Dave's Ice Cream twice. First time when I came to Hawaii last year in July--I was camping at Bellows and my friends and I wanted Ice Cream. I didn't know this place had such a great reputation to begin with. I ordered the Ube ice cream was I was surely not disappointed. The second time was before Halloween after going to Sea Life Par--we wanted to get a snack as we drove back to town through Kailua. I remembered this place, and treated my friends to it because they've never been. This time I ordered the Coconut Macadamia Nut ice cream. One scoop cup is all you need to enjoy! I would definitely come here again, and I deinitely recommend it.

I went to two different Dave's Ice Cream! One was near Food Land and one was here. My first experience at Dave was near Food Land. It was very nice. The worker was very patient. My brother in law told the worker that "This is my brother and sister in law from Philadelphia. So they don't know what they want yet." So the worker offered to let us try some of the exotic flavors that Hawaii ice creams have to offer. After trying stuff like Hawaiian fudge and many other flavors with "Hawaii" in it, I decided to pick Azuki bean. That became my favorite Hawaii ice cream flavor. Also the ice creams that Dave sells are freshly made everyday in Hawaii. So it's very authentic, a taste of Hawaii.

I've never had ice cream at Dave's. However, if my sisters and I had behaved during Sunday dinner, our parents would take us to Dave's for lychee sherbert (unlike sorbet, a sherbert contains some dairy) on our way home from grandma's. If we had been especially good we were even allowed to get it in a sugar cone. Hmm, food as a reward, eh? Nice. No wonder I feel I deserve something especially decadent after, say, losing five pounds, or getting my taxes in on time.

We ordered the shaved ice and the macadamia ice-cream. The ice-cream was good (4*) but the shaved ice literally melts in your mouth. Will definitely try again if I am in the neighborhood.

  • Cameron M.

The 5 stars are all about the flavors. Dave's has the absolute best in the Islands (anywhere, really). Had a triple: lychee sherbet, pineapple sherbet, and poha berry ice cream. Incredible! Good thing I'm on a no-sugar, low-carb diet. No one makes it like Dave's and with many of the stores closing (including the Int'l Marketplace and Kapahulu stores), this was a special treat. There doesn't appear to be an entry in Yelp for the Ala Moana store. It's hidden at the Ewa end of the mall, deep in the bowels of the Sears on the 1st floor.

After a brief swim my cousin wanted ice cream & was thinkin Cold Stone but we were way the heck out there & it was 5PM on Sunday. No way were we gonna find an open CS nearby. Almost 5 minutes in the car I spy Dave's Ice Cream & we make a detour. Inside there are desk top print outs advertising various offerings, much of which came in flavors you wouldn't normally see in the mainland (my very recent & former home) -Bubble Tea -Shave Ice (e.g., lychee, li hing mui, etc) -Malts -Floats -Sundaes -Mochi ice cream (e.g., green tea, mango, strawberry, choc, vanilla, etc) I HAD to try the mochi ice cream, after seeing a segment about it on my Hawaiian Air flight when I moved here last wk. We got a dome shaped chocolate piece & I LUVED it!!! The outside tasted almost like a marshmallow but had a tougher exterior. I am now a fan!!!! In addition, I tried the Hawaiian Mud Pie ice cream, made fresh locally. It was a Kona coffee ice cream, blended with oreos & something subtly nutty like pecans but I never actually saw pecan chunks. Just thought I tasted it. The only downer is that it was cash only. Other than that, we will be stopping by every time we're @ Bellos.

  • Cara D.

I have not tried the ice cream but this is my place to stop for shave ice! Fine ice and no skimping on the syrup, which is pulled from the fridge so doesn't cause the melt/crystals counter top syrup can. Love it - after reading the reviews I may have to try the ice cream.

    (5)
  • James W.

Good ice cream, just a bit overpriced. Hawaiian mud pie was great! I wish they had a bit more topping choices, though. They also carry mochi, which is a must for those who've never tried it.

  • Jennifer U.

Don't expect too much from this place except decent ice cream. If you're in Waimanalo and can't get to better ice cream than its pretty good, like camping at Bellows but the store is disgusting just like the rest of the town. It just makes me nervous of cleanliness of dish washing and eating from the store.

Enjoyed a nice treat here on my way back from the beach. Warning though, they do not take credit cards here so bring cash!

Tropical flavors such as pineapple coconut, lilikoi (passion fruit), kulolo (taro and coconut), Haupia (coconut), ube (Japanese sweet potato), Lychee, Macadamia Nut, and Mango are YUM!! Regular flavors like chocolate, coffee, and vanilla are delicious, too! Yesterday, I had the layered Halohalo which is shaved ice with canned fruits (mainly azuki beans and coconut gel) and a scoop of ube ice cream which can be all mixed together. My friend had 2 scoops of ice cream in a waffle cone. There are boba drinks, rootbeer floats and other desserts available. The service was efficient and pleasant! She even gave us a cup of water to go! Remember that it's Cash Only... I believe that there are other locations in Pearl City and Waipahu, but this location is in the rural town of Waimanalo, affectionately known as "Nalo". It's in a strip mall between Subway and a crack seed store, behind a Jack in the Box. There's free parking right in the front. Drive with aloha and kokua... and watch out for the potholes!!

  • Rufus K.

Coconut ice cream sets the bar!

  • William L.

CASH ONLY! Wanted to try your ice cream but you only accept cash. Really? It's 2015, just charge your customers the credit card fee and keep the business. You lost at least 20 in business over a 3% fee.

    (1)
  • Fawn L.

I love this place. I love their ice cream. It's thick. It's creamy. It's everything you want. They also offer free samples of their flavors so you can try the more exotic ones like Okinawan sweet potato or pineapple mac nut without commitment. My favorite is the blueberry cheesecake flavor. Onolicious braddah! 4 solid stars. I'm knocking 1 star off for service. I wish the staff were friendlier. Whenever I come in, they never smile! How can you work at an ice cream spot & never smile?!

  • Britt K.

I normally would of put 5 stars because I always come here considering the fact I live right up the street but today I came in for an acai bowl( which was my first time getting acai bowl from him cause I normally buy ice cream) so I ordered it the girl who made it was using the blender and a wooden spoon so in the beginning she was turning off the machine to stick spoon in and push everything down then she got lazy and put the spoon in when the blender Was still blending I heard a loud notice but didn't say anything paid for it went home was eating it and bit down on a piece of wood which hurt like hell... I'm already mad we call them they don't know what to say so I ask for a refund over the phone . On my way driving there my niece was searching for more in my bowl and found big pieces of wood. So I get there I have the pieces of wood I tell her what happened and she had an attitude like she didn't care u know how mad I was I was gonna use my refund to buy ice cream from them but her attitude just lost them a regular customer and instead of apologizing she was like clueless so I'm like where's the spoon I saw the spoof and half the spoon was gone!!! IF U COME HERE JUST ORDER THE ICE CREAM and if you get wood in your acai bowl they will act like they don't care :( *****PICTURE OF WOOD IS UPLOADED TO THEIR PHOTOS COULDNT ADD ON HERE

After Bubbies, everything's just not quite as good. The ice cream is pretty good, but 3 stars because bubble tea made from powders is unacceptable; also, there was no parking to be found. We spent 15 min circling the tiny parking lot waiting for someone to come out (and no one ever did, so we parked in a tow away zone and one person had to stay in the car). Sorry Dave!

  • Ling W.

This is my second favorite ice cream on the island. Have only been to this location, no others. Service is adequate, not over friendly but not rude. Cash only. Good parking, easy location to find. I get variation of mac nut. Today, I had the choc mac nut and, compared to another home made ice cream place on Oahu, it just didn't have the same sparkle. Too chocolatey, too heavy. But compared to most ice creams, it's still very good. Note, today I walked in to see a young boy crying. Apparently, the scoop that jumped off his cone was the SECOND one! The lady behind the counter quickly gave him a third scoop and cone, with a cup. No questions asked. They did the same thing last DEC when I took some friends there and her ice cream fell off the cone. Kudos for good customer service.

    (4)
  • Jennifer A.

The ice cream was good - creamy, refreshing, tasty. They also have bubble tea and shaved ice. Apparently their coconut macadamia has won awards, but I'm not a fan of coconut so didn't try it.

    (4)
  • Scott D.

Coconut macadamia is worthwhile. The macadamia nuts are toasted and really have a nutty flavor that goes well with the coconut, which is shredded. A must try. Hawaiian mud pie is good but essentially mocha with choc chips.

    (4)
  • Laura C.

We love this place. Great service, they let you try different flavors to help you decide. My favorite is the coconut pineapple. The blueberry cheesecake is also very good. It's a little pricey, but the ice cream is really quality. Plenty of parking and seating. We always just get cones to go.

Just the fact that this is Dave's Ice Cream is enough said! I've enjoyed Dave's ice cream for most of my life, I consider it to be somewhat a luxury. You really only get this at a restaurant unless you go to their location in Waimanalo (hidden behind Jack in the Box next to Ohana Karaoke). I've been here a few times in my life and never knew how extensive their menu was! You can get anything (desert wise) ranging from cheesecakes to boba drinks, shave ice, and they'll even help you out with a rootbeer float! Next time I venture into Dave's I'll be asking for my own special coke float (chocolate ice cream and a coke) mm! Not for those who are watching their sugar intake :P Anyways, back to Dave's shop. It's well kept, clean, and friendly staff. Decent amount of seating inside especially great spot after cruising at Sherwoods, Bellows, Sandys or Maks. Lots of parking. Just gotta be careful as it's not really well marked so those visiting might have trouble following the flow, drive with caution always! Also keep in mind the traffic in Nalo, especially on the weekends. It's one lane going either way and people stop to let others pass (thumbs up when I'm not in a rush to get anywhere). Bottom line, you can't go wrong with Dave's!

    (4)
  • Ian G.

Decent spot for Ice Cream. The ice cream selection is quite good, however the store needs to be updated. The inside is unkept, the store seems very old, the menu and selection seems outdated. The fact they don't take credit card speaks volumes on "not keeping up with the times". The last time I was in here, a lady brought her Dog in. Staff allowed the dog inside while the lady was eating her ice cream. Definitely unsanitary.

I think this is the last Dave's Ice Cream location on the island. There used to be one on Kapahulu if I remember correctly....but I think it closed. Therefore, I was so excited to come by to get my creamy, rich ice cream fix all the way in Waimanalo! Woo! I had two scoops which came out to be a little more than $5. I had the Green Tea and Kauai Turtle. Honestly, it wasn't as good as I remembered it to be, but maybe I had hyped it up in my head too much on the way there. It was good, just not worth driving all the way to Nalo for. The service was pretty non-existent. We ordered, paid and left. No greeting, no thank you, no smile. There are a few tables here for patrons to enjoy their desserts, but the fluorescent lighting, empty store and unhappy cashier didn't exactly translate into a welcoming environment that I wanted to stay any longer in. I'll probably be back when I'm in Waimanalo, especially because this is the only dessert establishment in the area. However, I will probably take my ice cream to go in order to spare me the unfriendliness of the cashier and the fluorescent lighting leading to my blindness.

Do not go here! Rosie is the most awful person ever!! I don't even believe her real name is Rosie because she said it as she rolled her eyes. My family came in around 645 and the place closes at 7 which she told us as soon as we walked in, and twice after each sample she gave us. She even told us that if we didn't know what we wanted by the time 7 rolled around, she wouldn't be able to serve us and to hurry up. Even after we told her we were new to the area. When I told my young 7 year old nephew that we had to leave because of her awful service she rudely said have a good day and shut off all the lights as we were exiting. It not even 7 pm as I am typing this she was awful

Service: it was busy but the girl was working as fast as she could because she was by herself. Food: the shaved ice was good and she put a good amount of flavor in it. The ice cream I ate toasted macadamia nut ice cream and it was really good, I also sampled the UBE flavor or also known as the purple yam. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was really yummy! Good prices for good ice cream!

Best green tea and ube ice cream to date. It was so creamy, thick and dense. It really is true to taste. Loved the strong flavor of the green tea.

Combine a road trip to Waimanalo with a stop at Frankie's Nursery for fruit and an ice cream at Dave's and you will be a happy camper. Traveling to a tropical locale and being able to indulge in all sorts of fare using the local bounty amps up every taste experience. Indulge in lychee sherbet, Kawaii turtle with macadamia nuts, green tea, pineapple/coconut, ube-aka purple yam and my fave-kulolo, a combo of coconut and taro. Dave's will not win any beauty queen contests for its decor and the windows could use some cleaning but the ice cream sure is delish. Don't miss it for a taste of "real Hawaii".

I just love Dave's ice cream. This location is nothing fancy. But that is hardly a factor. It's clean, there is indoor seating (unfortunately none outdoors). The ice cream is FANTASTIC. The only ice cream I've had that is better than Dave's I bought from a guy at the Mililani Farmer Market on Sunday mornings. I'm pretty sure that ice cream is made out of magic, but I digress. Dave's has the most variety, and excellent quality. The employees are very quick and helpful and friendly. My absolute FAVORITE flavor is the Kulolo (taro and coconut). It is fantastic. Truly. For any North Easterner haoles like myself who know what Stewart's is, the cotton candy ice cream at Dave's rivals Stewart's! It's extremely good. The Kalua Fudge is great too for chocolate lovers. But their are so many options, and they are happy to oblige you with a sample if you ask. I highly recommend stopping in!

I have been waiiiting so patiently for the right day to come. I always see this little spot on our way to Hawaii Kai or Bellows. Finally my brother was coming to visit and I had an excuse to try it out! Parking: Lots of it, it is in a small shopping plaza. Ambiance & Seating: Its not a cozy ice cream shop, it seems a little dated but that didn't bother me. There was tons of seating and a friendly staff when we walked through the door. Service: We eagerly read all the names of the ice cream and after gasping at each one we were so confused! The lady behind the counter was so friendly and sweet and offered for us to sample as many as we liked. We sampled so many, but we all knew what we wanted from the start! What we ordered: I ordered: Kahlua fudge and the chocolate macadamia My husband ordered the coconut macadamia and the lemon custard My brother ordered the toasted macadamia under the giant shaved ice What you SHOULD order Anything and everything! The staff was so helpful and the ice cream flavors were not overly rich but creamy and delicious. On the scale of 1 being lame ice cream that tastes like water and milk and 10 being Bluebell ice cream from the durrty south, this is up there at a 7. We would definitely go back if we were in the area and needed a cool treat on one of these hot hawaiian days!

  • Sharon B.

I thought it was pretty expensive for some cold treats, but it's cool, you pay what you feel, right? I ordered a boba tea, but she made it icy. I didn't like that too much, as I had to share the chewing between tapioca and ice. Not cool. Tapioca should be left alone to be played with, but share something that gives you BRAIN FREEZE, and yes it did give me brain freeze! I chose the coconut; she didn't have much flavors, but it was good regardless.

Stopped in for a quick shaved ice...nothing special and not much variety. The ice cream looks good but not what my kiddo wanted. Ended up here because we thought the Shack Attack was here, found out it is not here now, mobile. ..bummer.

  • Ax C.

Like a time capsule from the '80s this well-worn shop has good tasting ice cream along with bubble teas (a more recent addition to the menu?) and shave ice. The presence of artificial flavors and colors may turn off some, but it was still pretty darned good ice cream. Recommend going with this core product and saving shave ice for a shave ice place. Not sure if a Dave exists, if he does, he may want to consider a bit of upkeep. Slow with one server working. Cash only.

People. Get the coconut macnut or the coconut pineapple. Super delish. A "must stop" spot if you're in Kailua or Bellows and heading back to Honolulu.

After the beach we decided to stop for hawaiian ice. After waiting about 20 min cuz one girl was working, they didn't have enough product! How to you run out of ice?

    (1)
  • Doris D.

Terrific ice cream. I had a scoop of the mango which was packed with flavor and several mango chunks. While it's not the best place to hang out, the ice cream is well worth the visit.

  • Danielle C.

I love Dave's! With all the frozen yogurt and gelato places, I don't eat a whole lot of ice cream anymore but Dave's ice cream is delicious! I usually get either ube and green tea or chocolate chip cookie dough and sugar cookie (at the Aiea location). Their ice cream has great flavor and the portions serve just enough. The location is perfect to stop by for a treat on the way to the beach and parking is adequate. Oh, don't forget to bring cash!

One of the few places from my youth that still remain in Waimanalo. Ice cream is delicious as it has always been, and so many choices to choose from.

  • Alejandra F.

Love stopping by this place for a quick treat. They have a huge variety of ice cream flavors , as well as a pretty extensive menu of other items that you can order. I've only ever had a scoop of ice cream in a cone, so I can't comment on their milk shakes or smoothies or anything else. I love all the unique ice cream flavors that they offer. It doesn't look like much, but the ice cream is good! Only thing that sucks is that they're cash only. It's not expensive though, so hopefully you have a few bucks in your wallet.

Nice little hole in the wall ice cream shop on the way to Kailua from Hanama bay. The kauai turtle and caramel macadamia nut combo is INSANE! They also had halo-halo, which we got as well and was pretty epic. Huge portions, good prices.

I don't mind getting fat from this place! From specialty Caramel macadamia ice cream to common rainbow sherbet, ice cream was awesome. We will be back on our next trip to the island!!

  • Fannie L.

I used to go to the one in Diamond head or in Sears Ala Moana and bought pints of their green tea ice cream. I was VERY sad when they were closed a few years ago. It's my all time favorite and so far I haven't found anywhere else better than Dave's. This store is easy to find and has plenty of parking. I have been to 2 other locations of Dave's ice cream and they always give full scoops of ice cream to customers. Although I have cut down sugar intake a lot, Dave's ice cream is the only indulgence and gotta support a local business! :D

We stopped in this area on our tour. So I wanted to go next door to this ice cream shop. I got the taro and coconut ice cream and hubs got the toasted coconut and macadamia. They were delish!

Horrible, horrible, horrible experience. I went into the shop with my two kids and my husband. Wanted to treat my kids to ice cream before spending a day at the beach. First thing I ordered for my youngest daughter was rainbow sherbert, at the same time I ordered shave ice for my other daughter. She scooped some sherbert on a cone and started on the shave ice - the scooper was not smiling and she just seemed irritated from the get go. That's when my daughter said the ice cream didn't taste right. Sure enough my husband and I both confirmed the ice cream was obviously old. It was the bottom of the barrel, sticky gooey in some parts and icey in others. I told the girl when she got back with the shave ice, "I am sorry but this ice cream is bad" while trying to hand it back to her. She just snaps back, "What do you mean, "BAD"??". I said it tasted old, again she says "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?" SO now I am getting frustrated and I say, she can't eat this so I would like to order another shave ice. She spins on her heal and starts slamming things around and then turns back to me and says, "Are there going to be ANYMORE shave ices!?" all rude. I said no. As she is making it I say, "Listen, I am not trying to be a difficult customer, if this ice cream were good. my kid would have eaten it, she loves rainbow sherbert. Plus I tried it, it's bad". She then she says "I have worked 12 hours every day the last four days!" To which I said "Well please don't take it out on me". I throw away the cone that is now dripping on my hand. She looks at the trash can and asks me what happened to the bag liner - very accusatory! Like I am sabotaging her bag liner..? THEN she rings up the order and charges me for the trashed cone and the two shave ice!!!! I was so pissed! Horrible, horrible service from a young, rude, female ice cream scooper who when questioned why she would charge me for that bad ice cream cone says, "I can't afford to be giving out ice cream for free!" I pay for all three so that I can just leave already. Is she for real? That's not her store. I called the manager the next day who offered to give me the ice cream I payed for when I came back in. HA!!! That's never going to happen. How about an apology? How about promising to speak to your rude employee? UGH!

I consider myself a connoisseur of ice cream, I have tried it all over the mainland and the islands. I love Dave's, I believe it is the best on the island, it has wonderful consistency and body. My wife likes their waffle cones, we have tried Bubbies which has a wonderfull reputation, but the waffle cones just don't meet Dave's. But it is the Ice Cream that keeps me coming back. The only problems are that they are open till 7 P.M. which doesn't give you much time to get there, and they only take cash....

On one of those stifling humid vog induced days that was in the recent past but now seems a haze in Hades I decided to finally partake in some shave ice loveliness. I was excited, heard people always raving about it and honestly, how can you mess up ice that has been shaved and poured with a generous amount ofa liquid sugar that's has that wonderful saccharine coma feel to it. That's how memories are made in Hawaii. I like to normally review a place after several visits because of the fact you never know what factors may occur but the actual shave ice was so subpar that it warrants a review and never a trip back. The interior was harshly bright and clean. I was surprised by the non Dave's related items that were available for purchase. It seemed like more of a corner shop in that way than an ice cream parlor. The young last who happened to be the only member of staff seemed really confused about what to do when it came to a Japanese customer who was holding up the line because of decisiveness. To my relieve I believe she sensed my frustration and decided to serve me. She was quick and efficient. The transaction took less than two minutes. The cost was the most i've ever paid even with add ons at other businesses. The shave ice ordered had a combination of three syrups and my choice of ice cream flavor for an additional cost. I wont lie, that was a major plus. The coconut ice cream was rich and delicious without feeling heavy. The syrup wasn't evenly distributed which resulted in areas untouched by it. All three flavors tasted sour as if spoiled. It was at first bearable but quickly became so unappealing that I just shoveled until I reached the ice cream and threw the rest away. Shortly afterwards my mouth felt filthy and unbearable with a sourness that lingered. I've never felt that way before about shave ice. I'll have to pass on the shave ice and just stick to the ice cream.

For coffee and coconut homemade ice cream, this is hands-down the best we have ever tasted!!! We have travelled many places including all over Europe, New York, Chicago, LA, San Fran, Miami and four of the major Hawaiian islands, and Dave's is our favorite for coffee and coconut flavored ice cream. Definitely worth the drive from Waikiki. I was shocked when I didn't see more reviews.

The cleanest ice cream parlor I've ever been into! Also,The only ice cream parlor, I am aware of, that has the 'small-kid time' lemon(y) custard ice cream flavor. Service is great. Welcoming, friendly employees. They also have a selection of other snacks, drinks as you pass thru the town, in your car, jeep, motorcycle, bicycle and want a cool, light snack break.

This is my windward side shave ice place. After hours of body surfing and getting overexposed to the sun, this place is a welcome treat. The A/C was on nice and high!

So this is what paradise tastes like! I loved the chocolate macadamia ice cream, but let me tell you, it pales in comparison to their signature ice cream: Coconut Macadamia. I repeat: Coconut Macadamia. Made in Hawaii and absolutely to die for. And I'm not normally a coconut person. Eating here or their other locations is on the top of my "must eat" list, especially if you're an ice cream nut like me and you visit Hawaii. Tour buses usually make a pit stop at the souvenir shop a couple doors down, so make a quick trip to Dave's before you buy your souvenirs. As for the parlor itself, it's nothing fancy, which is one of the things I enjoy about it. Not at all flashy and a nice escape from the bustle of Waikiki. You'll feel right at home and the owner is a delight to chat with! Enjoyed every minute of my visit!

Fantastic ice cream! Compared to Polly Ann's in SF, the lychee is sweeter and more sorbet-y, and the pineapple has real pineapple chunks. The guava flavored ice cream is also a can't miss.

Ended up here because we thought the Shack Attack was here, found out it is not here now, mobile. ..bummer.

Cash only.

CASH ONLY! Wanted to try your ice cream but you only accept cash. Really? It's 2015, just charge your customers the credit card fee and keep the business. You lost at least 20 in business over a 3% fee.

Great ice cream, possibly the best on the island! Several interesting flavors to choose from. I love that the portions aren't enormous, this is good for kids. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it is cash only. We will be back!

Tried this place for the first time yesterday on my way back from Sandy Beach. I ordered one scoop of eggnog and one scoop of coconut macadamia on a waffle cone. It was amazing!!! So rich and creamy. My kids both got the chocolate chip cookie dough and they loved it. Dave's Ice cream doesn't skimp on the ingredients. It had big chunks of cookie dough in. I didn't try the kid's ice cream because I liked mine so much but they haven't stop raving about it. They make smoothies and shakes also. The cashier was kind of quiet but not unfriendly or unwelcoming. The only downside at Dave's is the fact that they only take cash. No credit or debit here so make sure you bring enough change to satisfy your sweet tooth.

"OMG." - First words when I tasted the ice cream. The place is pretty small, but the flavors make up for it. They hand make the ice creams and you can tell. The worker was pretty nice about giving out samples, because I tend to be pretty picky! Haha. I want to try them all before picking what I want. After a few tasting samples, I finally found the flavor I want... Coffee. Not just any coffee, Kona Coffee! Who can go wrong with Kona Coffee! The ice cream was creamy, not TOO rich in flavor, but it was good. It melted in my mouth and I couldn't get enough of it. I only got 1 scoop in a cup... but it felt like 2! For ~$3.5 for a 1 scoop... it was wayy worth it. I loved this place and I am dying to come back for more! GOGOGO! GET YOUR ICE CREAM ON!

Oh my gosh--Ice cream made in Hawaii, with HAWAIIAN flavors?!?! I got so excited when I came here, I think I tried 10 different flavors before settling on three. There are different varieties of macadamia nut flavors (toasted, caramel, coconut), as well as taro-based flavors (coconut-taro, ube), and coconut flavors (mac nut-coconut, haupia, coconut-taro). Luckily for us, the Waimanalo location is just outside of Bellows Air Force Base, so we got to come here a few times! And every time I came here, I splurged (calorie and sugar-wise) and got three scoops! My personal favorite was the coconut-taro flavor. It had a kind of milk and honey flavor, so it was a honey type of sweet. And it was just wonderful. I'm drooling as I'm typing this. Another favorite among the group was the ube ice cream. The bright purple color is etched into my mind, and I will yearn for that delicious sweet flavor until I go back! It's the best ube ice cream I've ever had. I will give into obesity if I can have this ice cream every day! Note to self: You may not want to move to Hawaii for your own health and well-being LOL

Sorry Dave!

The ice cream was good - creamy, refreshing, tasty. They also have bubble tea and shaved ice. Apparently their coconut macadamia has won awards, but I'm not a fan of coconut so didn't try it.

Coconut macadamia is worthwhile. The macadamia nuts are toasted and really have a nutty flavor that goes well with the coconut, which is shredded. A must try. Hawaiian mud pie is good but essentially mocha with choc chips.

We love this place. Great service, they let you try different flavors to help you decide. My favorite is the coconut pineapple. The blueberry cheesecake is also very good. It's a little pricey, but the ice cream is really quality. Plenty of parking and seating. We always just get cones to go.

I have not tried the ice cream but this is my place to stop for shave ice! Fine ice and no skimping on the syrup, which is pulled from the fridge so doesn't cause the melt/crystals counter top syrup can. Love it - after reading the reviews I may have to try the ice cream.

The cleanest ice cream parlor I've ever been into! Also,The only ice cream parlor, I am aware of, that has the 'small-kid time' lemon(y) custard ice cream flavor. Service is great.

Don't expect too much from this place except decent ice cream. If you're in Waimanalo and can't get to better ice cream than its pretty good, like camping at Bellows but the store is disgusting just like the rest of the town. It just makes me nervous of cleanliness of dish washing and eating from the store.

I don't mind getting fat from this place! From specialty Caramel macadamia ice cream to common rainbow sherbet, ice cream was awesome. We will be back on our next trip to the island!!

Ended up here because we thought the Shack Attack was here, found out it is not here now, mobile. ..bummer.

Like a time capsule from the '80s this well-worn shop has good tasting ice cream along with bubble teas (a more recent addition to the menu?) and shave ice. The presence of artificial flavors and colors may turn off some, but it was still pretty darned good ice cream. Recommend going with this core product and saving shave ice for a shave ice place. Not sure if a Dave exists, if he does, he may want to consider a bit of upkeep. Slow with one server working. Cash only.

Terrific ice cream. I had a scoop of the mango which was packed with flavor and several mango chunks. While it's not the best place to hang out, the ice cream is well worth the visit.

CASH ONLY! Wanted to try your ice cream but you only accept cash. Really? It's 2015, just charge your customers the credit card fee and keep the business. You lost at least 20 in business over a 3% fee.

Great ice cream, possibly the best on the island! Several interesting flavors to choose from. I love that the portions aren't enormous, this is good for kids. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it is cash only. We will be back!

2012 second place winner for best ice cream. 2013 third place. Awesome ice cream, I recommend the Hawaiian mudslide for the coffee flavor addicts.

I'm very sad to hear that this is the last Dave's Ice Cream on the island. Used to be my favorite place. We walked in to get my favorite green tea ice cream. I took one look at it and quickly scanned the other flavors to see if they looked more appetizing... nope. they were either frost bitten or all melty slimy looking. So sad, it looked so bad we walked out w/o getting any :(

I waited for my second visit before making a really informed review. ;) Just for the record... I LOVE ice cream. I heard the hype about Dave's and wanted to check it out. One fine fine day I was headed over to Bellows beach @ Waimanalo Bay and saw Dave's tucked away in the corner of a shopping center next to Subway. *Jackpot!* It is now my go-to ice cream stop after a long day of beaching. The service is always friendly. Never too busy. Great selection of frozen treats; ice cream, shave ice, milkshakes, boba (bubble tea) drinks, popsicles and more. The local flavors are DELICIOUS! Toasted macnut, kona coffee, taro, haupia, mango, lilikoi, coconut... all two thumbs up, you can't go wrong. Yeah, they have traditional flavors too like blueberry cheesecake, choco-chip, and vanilla but come on, you're here and you may as well try something different. Want to get the ultimate island experience?? Pick a flavor to add to a shave ice. Best of both treats if I do say so myself. :) Note: CASH Only (ATM located outside)
