CASH ONLY! Wanted to try your ice cream but you only accept cash. Really? It's 2015, just charge your customers the credit card fee and keep the business. You lost at least 20 in business over a 3% fee.
After a brief swim my cousin wanted ice cream & was thinkin Cold Stone but we were way the heck out there & it was 5PM on Sunday. No way were we gonna find an open CS nearby. Almost 5 minutes in the car I spy Dave's Ice Cream & we make a detour. Inside there are desk top print outs advertising various offerings, much of which came in flavors you wouldn't normally see in the mainland (my very recent & former home) -Bubble Tea -Shave Ice (e.g., lychee, li hing mui, etc) -Malts -Floats -Sundaes -Mochi ice cream (e.g., green tea, mango, strawberry, choc, vanilla, etc) I HAD to try the mochi ice cream, after seeing a segment about it on my Hawaiian Air flight when I moved here last wk. We got a dome shaped chocolate piece & I LUVED it!!! The outside tasted almost like a marshmallow but had a tougher exterior. I am now a fan!!!! In addition, I tried the Hawaiian Mud Pie ice cream, made fresh locally. It was a Kona coffee ice cream, blended with oreos & something subtly nutty like pecans but I never actually saw pecan chunks. Just thought I tasted it. The only downer is that it was cash only. Other than that, we will be stopping by every time we're @ Bellos.
I have not tried the ice cream but this is my place to stop for shave ice! Fine ice and no skimping on the syrup, which is pulled from the fridge so doesn't cause the melt/crystals counter top syrup can. Love it - after reading the reviews I may have to try the ice cream.

Still haven't gotten the hang of yelping...see my comments under tips- bottom line...YUM!
Love, love, love their green tea, taro, and haupia - the local flavors. The rest you can pretty much get from other ice cream stores or Longs. It's clean and well lit. However, the service can be slow and the sitting is not comfortable. Also, we were freezing inside, not just next to the ice-cream counter, but in the furthest away corner. So we didn't hang out.
Lemon custard and strawberry cheesecake ice cream was my weapon of choice on our first time visit to Dave's. I wasn't super impressed by the flavor choices available. I understand they make their own ice cream but unfortunately i really wasn't into most of the selection offered. The lemon custard was decent; I think I liked the strawberry cheesecake only slightly more. If I'm staying in Waimanalo again, I may decide to come here if I don't want to drive to Bubbies or go to Safeway for Ben and Jerrys.

Keneke’s Plate Lunch & BBQ

Reviews:
After a jam packed morning of visiting several beaches, snorkeling and sight seeing, my girlfriend and I scoured Yelp to find the nearest high rated eatery to satiate our stomachs. Keneke's came up and after seeing all the rave reviews, we had to try it out. This place is off on the side of the road and isn't your typical sit down restaurant. There is a walk up window where you order your food, then you wait for it to come out and then you can take it home or eat it in the designated eating area (I will explain this later). We ordered two Spam Breakfast Sandwiches. It was spam, eggs and cheese in between a hamburger bun. We also ordered the Macaroni Salad. It was delicious!!! Our only complaint was that the portions were quite small. After finishing our meal, we were still hungry and ended up sharing a Pulled Pork Sandwich. I was quite pleased with how everything tasted and was amazed at how cheap everything was and that good food could come out of a place that looked like Keneke's! Why do I say this? Well, the outside is quite dirty. If you need to use the restroom and you are a girl, I suggest bringing a buddy to be your lookout while you pop a squat in their small, dark, dirty restroom located in the back of the building facing an alley and abandoned building. You have to walk all the way around the building to get to the restroom. Secondly, their "eating area" is very interesting. It's an attached enclosed brick structure with tables and benches and it is pretty dirty. The surrounding walls are COVERED in religious script and writing. There are drawings of crosses, and sentences upon sentences of sayings from the Bible. It is a little hard to concentrate on my food when the walls were shouting out prayers at me. All in all, I would definitely come here again if I was in the area and I would order more than one portion for myself!!!
Keneke's put on an amazing spread for our wedding in March. Keith, the manager, was helpful leading up to the event, let us know what would taste good together. We paid a total of $39 per person and that included passed pupus for the cocktail hour, mango chicken skewers, breaded fan tail shrimp, roasted veggies and a few other appetizers. It also included all the set up, place settings including, plates, salad plates, knives, forks, wine and water glasses. The food we chose was fillet mignon, mahi mahi and a full roasted pig (served on a wheeled out silver cart, big crowd pleaser). We had kale and sesame salad, nalo greens salad with papaya dressing, grilled asparagus and taro buns. The food was tasty and plentiful! I'd received quotes from other caterers for $6000-$8000 for the same or similar catering, so to find Keneke's and pay under $2000 was phenomenal. They were professionally dressed, all in black with aprons and Keith himself was there to oversee everything. Food is such an important part of your wedding day, and all of my guests and my husband and I were completely happy :)
This review is for the shave ice and not the food. I enjoy hawaiian food but if I had to rate both the rating would go down. The service was good considering their was a long line and although they were swamped the servers were nice and courteous. Although the eating area was run down with crooked tables and benches. There was a pleasing sight as you focused on the walls of the dining area. There was writing all over the walls but it was Bible scriptures and good ones too. References to salvation which gave a calming and comforting presence to stone and wooden dining area. So let's talk about the shave ice, it was heaven! As others have mentioned you can combine different flavors of syrup with delicious ice cream. I had the macadamia nut ice cream that was superb. I don't like to mix the shave ice with the ice cream and this was especially good in this instance because I could really taste the difference. I would definitely return to this place the next chance I get!

L & L Hawaiian Barbecue

Reviews:
OMG. Seafood combo w/ BBQ chicken as the second side. the bbq chicken is teriyaki and has way too much teri. flavor for my buds. I suggest seafood combo b/c the k. pork/chicken meals here become overwhelming after a few bites. the mahi mahi here is divine, even though i tend to frown @ breaded mahi. the breaded shrimp in the combo is Hhuge. So cheap, soooo much food. You could likely share a combo, especially at lunch time, unless you eat quintessential mississippi portions. the chilli here is clean and tasty and comes in a huge bowl. perfect place to grab food for a picnic that will make your fat a&$ pass out on the shore.
I got into Waimanalo as the sun was setting. Unfortunately I had a challenge getting into my lodging and was beat but very hungry. Yelp told me my selections were thin on this side of the island. I know I had a Jack in the Box, 7-11, and a golf course grill (could be fantastic but it wasn't the time to find out). L and L Drive Inn won hands down - and by default... As previous Yelpers notes, service was wicked fast, but my experience with the servers was quite different than a previous reviewer had. In a word - delightful. They are Chinese but I found them full of great information about the area and boy did they love to hear about my travels and ND (go figure). The food was good, standard L and L fare, though the Mac salad was particularly yummy. Slightly sweet, well seasoned, and the noodles weren't mushy. I also had the Saimin (ramen) burger. I always find it a good bite, but recommend using Sriracha on it as the sauce can be a bit cloying.
This is an A-OK L&L, like so many others on the island. It's located right across the street from shimas. They offer the usual fare.... Plate lunches, breakfasts, burgers and fries, it's all good. There's a small parking lot too that is hardly ever full, although when I have been here, there have been other customers purchasing food inside. The workers here are chinese, they speak mandarin and are not the friendliest people in the world. Don't expect a smile out of them when you order.... They are fast though, you'll be in and out within a few minutes. Unless you want to stay and eat, there are a few tables inside, but the decor and ambiance is non existent. Although there are some other take out kinds of places in the area, I'd prefer to come to L and L for breakfast because they do open early and close late. L and L food is a little uninspiring for me, but with limited options in waimanalo, it's a-ok.

Ken’s In & Out Plate Lunch

Reviews:
Really hungry and low on cash? This is the place to go! I'm a fan of Kens. They're always so sweet and eat what you pay for. $5 for a breakfast plate that's filling. Can't go wrong with bacon and over easy eggs. Their other options are also tasty.
I have weird food cravings at very inopportune times sometimes. It's like I'm constantly pregnant. Smh and it makes it very difficult to satisfy these cravings especially in places like waimanalo where there is not much variety. I found myself killing time at this little shopping area in waimanalo one day with a bad craving for spicy chicken wings (not the American kind, the asian kind where the spicy sauce is mixed in with the batter and then deep fried). I stumbled around the parking lot, trying to decide if tacos from jack in the box would satisfy my craving or if I'd have to get a plate of dukbokki from Ohana karaoke (I know, I'm a weirdo and don't make any sense sometimes). That's when I found Ken's. Kens serves a variety of plate lunches and breakfast plates. There are some local foods like shoyu chicken (yum!!) and a lot of Filipino foods too. After championing the hoard of flies right outside, I poked my head in the door to read the menu and found chicken wings as an option for a plate lunch. I wasn't THAT hungry and waited in the very long line to ask if I could just get a side of wings. The friendly cashier happily obliged and told me I could order just a side of wings, even though it wasn't on the menu board. Six wings for $5 is a steal in my book! I happily left with my styrofoam box of wings. They were pretty delicious too. The interior desperately needs some renovation and I can't speak too highly of the way it made me feel about the cleanliness of the place. It seems like a lot of tourists come here...not really sure why since many of the dishes are Filipino. There was a sign for "bagice" on the wall. I just assumed it was a Filipino fish I've never heard of. NOPE. "Bag Ice". The Filipino people who run this place didn't put a space. Lol. I'll probably be back for the wings. It was too perfect in satisfying my very precise craving. I won't stick around to eat there though.
Nice whole in the wall. I had the pork. It was good, but would like to try other things. Definitely worth stopping and definitely better than subway or jack in the box.

Who gets excited about a McDonalds renovation? I do!! The old drive-thru used to look like this with the menu (several car lengths ahead) too far away from the speaker to read: yelp.com/biz_photos/mcdo… Now the menu is right next to the speaker phone, and customers can actually see it: yelp.com/biz_photos/mcdo… yelp.com/biz_photos/mcdo… Big improvement! 31 Yelps Challenge: #11/31
Great location, right next to the beach, but my only complaint is the parking lot situation. Drive thru lane needs to be painted so ppl that aren't from waimanalo know that u wait by the wall, rather than cut ppl off who've been waiting forever.
This location seemed to be a little busy we stopped by for lunch after hitting Bellows beach! Order seemed right except our French fries were very bland like no salt. :( but luckily my daughter didn't notice the difference but us, the adults did. My burger also was not warm but room temperature like it had been sitting out...?

I'm a Production Manager and needed some last minute food to load our craft service table for today's Waimanalo Bay area commercial shoot. At the last minute, I called the Waimanalo Subway and spoke to Robert about placing a large order. Even with the short timeframe, Rob was both enthusiastic and extremely helpful. He and his crew went out of their way to use the bread straight out of the oven. The sandwich platters and salads were delicious and the cast and crew loved it! Rob and crew, thank you again for all of your help!!!
Power was out in waimanalo yesterday so wasn't sure if they were open, but sure and behold they were! So I got my sandwich fix. Staff: We walk into the joint and the first thing I see is a girl who works there wiping the windows. Sure that's cool and all (no one was in the store besides us and the workers) anyway this girls shorts were higher then higher, I mean kinda how volleyball players shorts are that's how high! Not sure if there's a dress code but it just did not look right. Another girl comes out from the back and we start to order. She was very slow and im not sure if she spoke English well, seemed like she had trouble understanding what we said. Food: I ordered a subway club which of course with me not paying attention and I was focusing on my friends son. The lady forgot to put one meat on my sandwich. I then ask her to put on my veggies i simply asked for 3 things lettuce, onions & olives. Instead she puts jalapeños!!! I told her I didn't want jalapeños and I had asked for olives, yeah so she took it off. We also got a meatball marinara, and asked for pepperoni on it, we come to subway so often we know how our sandwiches are made, so on the footlong she puts 4 pieces, it's supposed to be 8. She then looks up at us and says "Oh yeah I forgot". UM OKAY. Anyway I got the broccoli and cheddar soup too. There was a sign in the front saying that you could make the soup and sandwich into a meal, so when I get to the front to pay, I ask high shorts if I could do that and she says NO soup is extra that sign is old. So I was just like whatever, just make my other sandwich into a meal I'll get the chips Blah blah. Anyway yeah i don't think I'll be back to this location.
By far the worst Subway ever! The staff was friendly until you bring out your coupons. We went in there after a long day at soccer with 2 very hungry tweens. Only to get grief from the staff and manager who had to come out several times cause the staff had to consult with him. They didnt like the fact that we all went in there with our own coupons to buy our food seperately, yes seperately! And we were in there for a good hour just trying to get through the line to get our sandwiches made and paid for. I didnt see anything wrong as we were all paying customers, but because we came as a group, they looked at it differently and said that we were only allowed to use 1 coupon. Then we get home and our bread was so dry that it was crumbling! NO CAN!
