Ick. This is definitely a place that would make it on to Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. From the dismal dining room to the "I don't give a rat's ass" service to the super greasy fried food, I think they have the cruise industry to thank for continuing to stay in business. I had the seafood chowder and the fish and chips. The chowder and strong drinks were this place's only saving grace. The rest of the meal went downhill pretty fast... fish and chips so greasy they were inedible. Yes, I understand fish and chips are fried but you shouldn't be able to press on the fish with your finger and a tablespoon of grease oozes out. Ew. Fries were those gross battered types. Couldn't finish it and couldn't bother to complain... just wanted to get the heck out of there.

Great place to relax after a day of activity. Good drinks, great food and lots of it. Near a shopping mini mall for last minute tsotchkes and within walking distance to the cruise ship pier. Open air dining with a beautiful beach view. The fish and chips was sublime. Service is good and the beer is cold.

We were on island with 30 teenage boys and looking for somewhere to watch the Oregon Ducks play. This place was perfect! Although all we had was appetizers and drinks, all were quite tasty. Service was fabulous even though we didn't order nearly enough to justify their attention. We really ejoyed the calamari. Their drink called the "Na Pali" was wonderful. And the view was very nice while watching the Ducks. I would highly recommend this place as the place to go if you are looking for some TVs with football (or other sports).

Awful, awful, awful. Stay away from the place that calls itself the "first steakhouse" and claims the "best fried fish" on an island in the Pacific. Just a terrible over-priced tourist trap and the worst thing isn't was recommended by a local. I want to find the guy and make some recommendations on where he should go eat when he comes to my town. It's almost like they know you're never coming back so they don't even care to try to make an effort to give you a decent meal. My wife had crab cakes that tasted like I'm not sure what but certainly not crab. My daughter had "herb" chicken that looked like it had been boiled and my son and I had fish and chips that that were most likely a Sysco house product. I will give them credit that the French fries were the battered kind so they weren't terrible. My little boy had buttered noodles. They were linguine which had been rethermaliized too long and topped with clarified butter so they were limo and had no flavor. The waitress was friendly and we had a table ready for us immediately when we arrived. I guess I should have seen the signs.

Food is good. Service is a little slow but the owner is super nice and friendly. Will definitely go back again if we are ever in Kauai.

Horrible food... They give you a lot of food but lacks flavor. My husband and I tried it after reading not so great reviews here on yelp but didn't think it was gonna be so bad. Well it was not good at all. Would go to a fast food restaurant before going here again.

Great service, average food. It's a good choice for lunch if you're just looking to get full.

Three for the view and music. The food is basic and can go either way (my burger was awful). I hate that moldy bar mat smell, but I didn't enjoy the smell of bathroom cleanser during dinner either. Place needs an update

location is great. Right on the beach and all around the bar spot. Ordered their mai tai, beer and the calamari. I wasnt the fan of the calamari but my girl went crazy for them. The mai tai was also decent. The prices are normal but if you go towards the center of the strip mall you'll see a booth where a lady sits and sells tours. Ask her for a coupon and she'll give you one for this place. We ended up saving like $7 with that coupon.

Oh, my god. I was so hungry. After surfing all day, I was so very hungry, you have no idea. I was not surfing well, and spent most of my time in the water. I even saw a turtle. Right there on Kalapaki beach. He just popped up and said hi. Then he said eat at JJ's. Now, I am not usually the type to take the word of strange sea turtles, but, like I said, i was famished. I hauled my incredibly tired body back onto my surfboard, and paddled in. Low and behold, the sea turtle was right, there was a delightful little outdoor broiler right there. I was seated by the very energetic Jett, who I later found out was the manager. My waiter, I don't remember his name, but he was kinda cute in that frat boy kinda way. He kept up with my iced tea habit, which I have to admit is pretty serious. He even got me a little bit a agave syrup instead of just normal sugar, which I prefer. Anyway, I have the onion soup and a spinach salad. The sea turtle was so right! I thoroughly enjoyed both and the spinach salad had bacon on it! I do love me some bacon. Then, because that was entirely too healthy, I decided to have dessert. They have fresh made key lime pie, from actual key limes; it was so creamy and delicious. Anyway, I found out that the place has been locally owned and operated for decades, passed down from generation to generation. So eating there is supporting the local economy and sea turtles. All in all, they don't disappoint. not even a little bit. You should go there.

This place was great. Nice atmosphere, friendly attentive service, good portions and the food was phenomenal. Right on the bay with a great view. What more can I say!

Stayed next door at the Mariott We thought it looked like a great place to watch college football...but it wasn't. We went with the family, and wanted to watch 2 different games that were on at the same time. The waitress, then the manager, refused to change a tv tucked into the back corner to the other game we wanted to watch. There was no one else in the area, and those nearby were all facing away from the tv we wanted to watch. Their suggestion was for the one person in our group that wanted to watch the other game should sit alone on the other side of the restaurant! We told them we were leaving if they wouldn't change the tv, and that we were planning on eating and drinking through both games. They said the tvs stay the way they are and we were free to leave....and yelled at us on the way out the door. After reading some other reviews, it doesn't sound like we missed much anyways...prices seemed high, especially considering the service. The second floor bar/restaurant across the street has some big tv's too...perhaps they'll appreciate your business.

Pleasant surprise. We went here for an early lunch. Had bloody marys- quite good. I had the kaluha pork and cabbage which I enjoyed and my husband had the fried egg and avocado sandwich with fries which were good as well. The service was very nice and friendly (Kelly ) and we'd definitely return based on that experience.

The menu says the have the best fish and chips on the island and we all agree. They use ono fish and the batter is perfectly crispy, chug it down with firerock while surfer watching and you're set!

Final meal on the Garden Island was at JJ's Broiler. Again, I dined in the Kalapaki Beach area, which was convenient because of my work trip. I was ready to go anywhere in the town to have lunch, but an old pal suggested JJ's. I went light for a change, having gained probably 5 pounds during the trip, and got the ono sandwich. The view is nice from the restaurant, but for me, it's all secondary to the food. The ono sandwich was superb, and the salad with oil/vinegar dressing was awesome. I didn't mind that the dressing soaked into my sandwich bun. Yeah, that good. Good service, good food, reasonable price, good company. Good way to depart from Kauai!

SAVE YOUR MONEY! They have a very nice patio on the beach, but a dinner for 4 will run you around $70 and you will be kicking yourself. AWFUL food. Not one person on my table could finish their meal after an entire day of traveling and not eating. This isnt because the portions are too big, it's because it's just GARBAGE. No vegetarian options, No gluten free options...unless you like plain white rice for $15. The last time I had a meal this bad was over 5 years ago at a Las Vegas Buffet. This will go down in my history books as a bad one, folks. That said, the drink prices were reasonable and poured generously.

Great experience at JJ's today. Husband and I stopped for lunch. We were seated immediately on the patio with a great view of the beach. Jennifer, our server, took our drink order right away and came back twice to check on us before we ordered. I had the All American Burger and husband had the Kauai Sailor. Both were exceptional tasty and fresh. I was surprised that the lettuce (romaine) onion, and tomato provided were so fresh. My burger came with a delicious tomato relish and husband's came with grilled pineapple and bacon-- which made each burger unique. The fries we shared had some kind of BBQ seasoning on them. Yum!! We each had a soda but JJ's charges for refills which seems cheap since no entrée on the menu costs less than $10.95. Jennifer was great and even stopped to chat with us afterward. I'd definitely return if only to sample the drinks at happy hour.

There are better and worse places to eat in Kauai. If you're staying around Kalapaki Beach, this is as good a place to eat as any, and it's cheaper than the nearby Duke's and the Italian restaurant next to the Marriott. Beers are overpriced, but it's a nice atmosphere and relaxing to sit by the beach. It's usually not as crowded and noisy as Duke's either. I had the Kalua pork wrap which I thought was very good. Service was also good, the waitress was friendly and on the ball. Overall, if you're in the area and looking for a good meal, this is a good place, but don't go out of your way to eat here.

I gave this a 3 star because of two cons. First off, I thought the service was great and the people were friendly. They gave our son crackers, Popsicles (free of charge). They changed the channel so my husband could watch the bears game. I thought the food and drinks were good. The first con being that it was very hot and humid. No fans. Although there is a ocean front, there was no breeze. Even the waitresses were complaining of the heat. It was so unbearable I had to go in the car and blast the the AC for a while. The second con was that the prices were a bit high. I didn't like the fact I had to pay for food I couldn't even finish due to the heat.

Back in the 70s and early 80s the original JJ's was really great. About four years ago I had an excellent dinner here. Since then, I've stopped in about once a year for lunch. Each time has gotten progressively worse. This current version has an excellent location and setting, but the overall experience is disappointing. It has evolved into a kind of pathetic attempt to be a generic sports bar with a few posters and multiple wall mounted TVs. The wait staff, when they were at my table, were nice but I felt like I was being rushed. I counted four of them. It was a challenge to get their attention. They seemed to spend most of their time by the service bar talking story about their boyfriends and personal problems in voices loud enough to be heard by the patrons inside. I ordered the Reuben sandwich. Big mistake. I've never had tougher corned beef! The portions were small. Chewing was tiring. Somewhat rubbery and barely luke warm. It came with a big pile of fries that looked good in presentation, but didn't deliver in taste or texture. The coffee was good in a big mug. I won't go back.

Duke's was packed for lunch so we ended up at JJ's. The view was nice. How about the food? Uh, the view was nice. And the service? Did I mention the view was nice? Seriously, the poor service and substandard food makes this a place to avoid. The only way I can see this place surviving is because they rely on a constant stream of first time customers!

Go somewhere else where you can pay the same for better food. WAY too greasy, super super greasy. We both felt a little sick when we left. Service was just ok, and there is no view to speak of. Kauai offers so much more.

So JJs was my first stop after I got off the plane in Kauai. My bf's parents brought us here for drinks and appetizers. I had some kind of fruity tropical chic drink. It was mighty tasty and was heavy on the alcohol (which is a good thing when you're on vacation). I also ordered the chicken wings that the bf and I split. They were really good but ask for the hot sauce on the side so you can control the amount of heat you want. I think the best thing about this place was sitting on the patio and watching the waves and people. It was a great way to start my vacation.

We ran in here real quick to get a bit to eat before our flight back to the mainland. My husband has a food allergy to airline food...well not really but he won't eat the stuff. As I did some quick shopping at the ABC Store (I forgot to buy something for my son) my husband ordered me a fish sandwich and himself a burger. When I got back it was just a couple minutes until our food was ready. My fish sandwich was very good but my husbands burger was ok. He helped me eat my fish sandwich...it was pretty big. Our bartender (we sat at the bar) was friendly and helped us get things quicker since we were running kind of late. Everyone complained it was expensive but after staying in Princeville it didn't seem that expensive. It is located on the cove and has nice views too.

I think JJ's has made significant improvements in the past year (as an annual island visitor). There are some great lighter fare items, and the preparation is much improved. My new favorite is the Cosmopolitan Turkey Burger - nicely seasoned turkey burger with just mustard to enhance avacodo, lettuce, sprouts, and tomato on rye! I love the sweet potato fries, no coating, actual sweet potato flavor, deadly good.

This is our second trip to Kauai and we stopped here this time for lunch today. We might have skipped it had we read these reviews but everything turned out fine for us. We sat at the bar and Che' was a good server and bartender, friendly and prompt. I had a tuna melt and enjoyed it while my wife had a turkey burger that was great as well. Prices were reasonable, a better than decent selection of beer and not a terrible view of the bay. As far as sports bars go, I'd go there only if I confirmed in advance that my game would be on but I'm that way with just about any sports bar I go to for the first time.

This family run restaurant is a gem of Kauai. The service aims to please, the food is awesome, the drinks are unique and hit the spot, and the location is very convenient. From watching football games at the bar, to sitting bayside on the balcony, you can't go wrong by visiting JJ's Broiler.

Was not happy at all, the average price of a burger is about $14 and a soda is $3.25 unfortunately for a $3 fountain drink you do not get refills. The location was nice but there were pigeons walking thorough out the restaurant. I just wasn't a fan of this place.

I like eating here, but I like drinking here better. I go to JJ's with my hanai sister and her family and in the past five years have been there twice. It's not a place I would go by myself. I have been satisfied with the food I get, and while others have not been impressed with their service, we have always been treated well. Now, there are probably a few factors on why we get good service, the first and foremost being we are "locals" and my hanai sister knows when NOT to eat there (when a cruise ship is in port). My hanai sister also used to work there, and still knows a lot of the wait staff that work there.

We returned Kauai this past November. We ate at JJ's several times because my daughter enjoyed going to the nearby beach afterwards. We also loved being there for the beautiful sunsets. We eventually tried most items on the menu, which were very enjoyable. Never thought I'd find my favorite English fish and chips in Hawaii! The staff from top to bottom were so kind, concerned and fun, it felt very homey and comfortable. The bar area looked like a great place to watch sports. As they prepared the second floor for upcoming Christmas parties for local folks, there was a fabulous Nutcracker collection displayed....dozens, some of them shoulder high. An unexpected delight. It was just a wonderful experience in every way.

Not bad, not great, just ok. It is a popular restaurant and a great location. The service is good, but the food is marginal at best. Sorry, I really wanted to like it.

I definitely wouldnt recommend this place. We ordered chicken caesar salad and a burger and the food was terrible. The chicken tasted as it was not cooked and the salad had a very weird taste. It was very plain and no taste. Would never come back to this place and wouldnt recommend anyone coming either.

Food is not so good... Beef was hard and full of fat and nerves. My wife took a chicken, same result. We had different advises regarding this place and we wanted to give its chance to it. Finally, we should had go to the others places around which are more good advises. Service is really really sloooooow .... .... Go to Duck's which is 2 minutes WALK from these place, it would be much better. And also tables was not so clean outside ...

JJ broiler is one of the best restaurants to eat at while visiting the beautiful island of Kauai. Great location, AMAZING food. They have 7 flat screen TVs to watch sporting event (if you are an COLTS fan, like I am and an NFL junkie) this is the perferct place to unwind with your friends. The staff is very friendly and warm and the service was outstanding. Thumbs up for me... I am looking forward to my next visit.

Went for a quick lunch here because the smell of cooking pork outside was so enticing. I don't know where that pork goes because mine was a combination of fat, tough pieces and one piece that was actually cold (possibly from the fridge). My wife had fish and chips which was plentiful but not good tasting. Not going back ...

I haven't eaten here so I can't give this place higher than 3 stars. I also haven't necessarily drank here (given that I'm pregnant) so I also can't contribute much beyond my hubby's experiences towards that front. What I CAN comment on is the nightlife scene here. Kauai is not known for their bangin' nightclub scene and, given that I'm from San Francisco, I know my clubs and sound systems. I was thoroughly impressed with this place! The upstairs, where the host most of the venues, was HUGE. High ceilings and floor to ceiling windows that will actually open mean that there can be a huge crowd without smelling like one. Ample seating with a great ratio of booths to tables is another big plus. Waitresses that actually go around to the tables and booths and serve you drinks takes service further than 99% of the clubs I've been to. Their sound system isn't great but then again, this is Kauai and until they get a lot more talent it probably doesn't need to be improved upon. The dance floor is huge and they have a bar you can belly up to and order from. Bathrooms are clean and the cover charge ($10) was pretty decent given that we were seeing a couple of acts and the headliner was the lead singer from The Pricks. It speaks volumes to state that I was almost 9 months pregnant and felt comfortable being here. Now if I could just convince all my San Francisco DJs to roll through...

We had a $50 gift coupon for JJ's so decided to use it. We were able to sit outside by the bay & had a lovely view. We had an exceptional waitress & excellent service although a bit slow. I had the chicken pesto pasta which was OK, kind of bland. My husband had the prime rib & rice which he said was good. The waitress recommended the Hawaiian snapper to our friend which she said was exceptional.

I love this restaurant! Their food is amazing I have not ever had anything bad here. I love the fish tacos! Their service is great! They are so friendly. Long wait (11empty tables at 6:00 PM) and dinner not only cold when arrived but steak was well done. I ordered rare My husband had ahi which was dry and tasteless. This was the fresh fish of the day. Besides slow service and terrible food, the Restrooms were dirty without paper towels and without toilet paper.

Do not eat here. The food was bad, the service was slow, and the rugs and table tops were dirty. I am shocked that a place with such a great location is sooo bad.

Why is everyone knocking this place? Is it overpriced? YES . Are you on vacation ? Yes. What do you expect from a sports bar ? I think the food was decent and the servers were great and the oceanfront views were awesome.

Stopped by here on a Sunday morning for NFL Football and although it was open.. they weren't exactly serving food yet. The waitress was kind enough to let us know that we could order from the Kalapaki Beach Hut and eat at a booth in the restaurant. Definitely scored some cool points!

Went here 2 nights ago, as we are staying at the Marriott and was a convenient location. That was a mistake!! Nobody was in the place and we waited for a table. Then waited about 10 min for anyone to acknowledge us and take a drink order. Food was cold (I had the overpriced salmon stuffed with crab) and my husband ordered a chicken Ceasar salad that had processed chicken in it. We barely ate any of our meals and got out quickly. I would go elsewhere. Overpriced, bad service and bad food!!

  • Graham R.

We went here hoping for good food, because my daughter came here for lunch - a plate of fries - and said they were OK. The first thing I noticed was that she failed to mention the price. (20 dollars for a cheeseburger? It'd better be good.) The drinks - though expensive - were alright. This doesn't make up for the food. My daughter ordered 'The Navigator'... 20 dollars wasted. The bun was overcooked, and the burger terrible. I had the 'Fish Tacos', which were just battered fish in a taco wrap, which didn't taste good at all. Very overpriced and the food is terrible - do not visit this place.

4 stars for views and service--food a 3 but a nice place for lunch. I had the Ono burger with fries and my hubby had soup and salad, both were ok, no complaints but no raves either. Sitting on the deck watching the surfers was a great way to spend the afternoon.

JJ's was just ok. We went here because it looked like it had a good variety of food to choose from. The food was just ok, I ended up getting burger and it was nothing spectacular. The service was good and the view was nice. I don't think I would go back.

Never again. The food was pretty lousy, drinks as well. The smell of urine was totally disgusting. I have been to Kauai quite a few times and have never been attracted to JJ's, we only went because Duke's was packed. The service was friendly that accounts for the 2 stars instead of 1.

This place is amazing. After going here on our first stop after the airport I came back to watch my college football game. I had 6 hours to kill before my flight home (after the rest of my family left) and spent a lot of time their. The staff was great, the food is good, the view is amazing, and it's great to have all the sports on. I love dukes too but this place rocks. It does seem overpriced at first, but go to any sit down restaurant in Hawaii and try to find something on the menu for under $10. It just doesn't happen...

My husband and I stopped by here one afternoon out of connivance after site seeing and shopping. We had an appetizer of calamari, wings, pork wontons, onion rings and baby octopus-ALL FRIED, served with three dipping sauces. All very good, while this was the first time having octopus, I think fried was the was to go for us. The second time we just wanted to go back. We had burgers and they were very tasty and juicy. The best thing about JJ Broilers is the location-the food was very good-but sitting out on the patio watching kids and families play and surf on the beach just right there, was great. We totally enjoyed the ocean view and meals were good also. It was very relaxing for us. Thank you Broilers. Im sorry some people didn't enjoy their meals. Perhaps they just hit a rough day for the cooks or maybe we are not not as picky or not very good critics.

for the price we paid I expected a little bit better. My son had the triple sliders and the kalua pig was over cooked and dry. The other issue was someone wanted loco-moco. Usually it's done with an overeasy or sunny side egg but, the person wanted scrambled. The waitress said the cooks don't make scrambled eggs?!?! Wow really!? what a trip. It seriously doesn't take that much work to scramble an egg. Oh and big groups you'll all be on once check. You can't request separate checks. It's company policy per the server. The upside is the views of the bay and the chicken while you dine

5 Reuben, 4 Fish Tacos and service, 2 Tuna Salad Sandwich. I had lunch here with my husband and father-in-law. THE GOOD: They had the Reuben and fish tacos, both with fries. I suspect the Reuben was better because dad was awfully quiet eating his sandwich! Hubs complimented the tacos but wished he ordered the Reuben. The food came out quickly and the plates were nice & hot. Portions were not too bad either. The waitress was very polite and EVERYONE who worked there exhibited the Aloha spirit! THE BAD: I ordered the tuna salad sandwich with fries. My plate was hot (which I didn't mind) along with the delicious fries, but my tuna was warm and runny! The bread was toasted (which I love with tuna sandwiches), but the tuna made it soggy. It was a tuna "salad sandwich!" This is an easy fix... make it cold. Lastly, we ordered water & was never offered refills.

This is the worst, flavorless food I've ever had anywhere on the islands. How could they have award winning fish and chips when it's fishy fish and bland. No one at our table ate their entrees. Manager was very nice and took off our entrees though. They also have a nice view and drinks are good. Maybe go for appetizers and drinks & enjoy the view :) they get 3 for their management and drinks w view.

Went there around 7:30pm on a Thursday night, it wasn't that busy, but.... They had awful service. I got the Cobb Salad. It was a giant beast of a salad. . . I got the papaya seed dressing. Well I thought I did it was a very dry salad. I would have asked for more dressing but she never came back to our table. For the price and service I'd say go on and skip this place.

The food was decent for the price. However, the customer service from the management and staff was less than average, in fact, they were rude. The only reason I'm leaving two stars is bc our server was friendly and helpful unlike her co-workers. Not recommended unless you appreciate being talked down to. This is the first and only negative review I have ever written on Yelp.

Nice atmosphere, specializes in "sports" but offers food items at a higher price... Aka NY strip is $38. Not quite sure what market they are trying to sell toward. It is 8:30 pm when visiting for dinner and very very depressing music is playing, very slow and making me want to fall asleep. Nice waiter but slightly feel rushed after eating. Check out if in the area, maybe by that time they will play better music?

Nice views and good options. Several local brew options, garnished with pineapple. The local seafood chowder was flavorful, just a shame was cool to the tempature and crackers were stail. Mahi mahi sandwich was decent too. Didn't have an overbearing fish taste, still soft and moist. Salmon was far better. But the potatoe cake it sat on was not the right fit in my opinion. Staff was great and wonderful still and I will be back

We sat on the patio for lunch and had a nice view of the bay. I asked about gluten free bread or bun for burgers but was told that this place has been here for a long time and the owners do not easily make changes especially for a fad or........she didn't finish her sentence because she realized she said the wrong thing using the word fad. She did go on to mention that many people today already inquired about gluten free. They better get with the program then or lose potential customers. I ended up having the Cobb Salad and my husband had a burger and fries. The salad was huge and I could not finish it. For a steak house I was surprised that the bacon on the salad was the precook stuff just as it come from the bags delivered by the supplier, it was not heated to make it crispy and better quality, just cold, soft and blah. The chicken on the salad was cold also. I expected freshness from a steakhouse. The burger was good but was more like medium well then medium rare that my husband ordered. The cheese is American Cheese. Sorry that is not cheese......again you are a steakhouse and serve American cheese ???? That is a first for me. Hopefully they do steak better..

Share their fish & chips. 4 Giant pieces enough to share! Also their Reuben is huge and awesome!

On our last day in Kauai we were just driving around wasting time till our flight was scheduled to leave. We ended up here because the burger place near it was PACKED and had zero seating. I am gonna admit I'm a brat and tell you I won't wait 20+ min for a burger and then stand around to eat it. So, we ended up at JJ's & I'm glad we did. We had a great view of the water on a particularly pretty day. There was a nice breeze, our waitress was quick, our food came out fast and everything tasted great. I'd ask how hard is it to mess up a burger, but I've been to other places that have accomplished that. The parking was super easy, the prices were not terrible, and I can't say that I'll ever come back here, but I think if you're wondering if you should go, my answer would be 'yes!' Enjoy!!

Didn't eat but had drinks here and the were priced at 1/3 of what we had paid in the rest of the island 4.50 bloody Mary's and Moscow mules.

Hands down BEST burger I have ever had here. Super thick and cooked perfectly! Great view of the ocean too. Staff was friendly and my mudslide was delicious too!

When vacationing in Kalipacki u must visit J.J.'s, it's an institution. The owner Jett is always seating and greeting and making sure everyone has a great dining experience. The views from their large private, right on the beach patio are some of the best in Kauai. Reasonable prices, great cocktails and always good service. We come here every time we come in to town and always enjoy it. Have the New York that is served on a sizzling metal plate and coated with garlic butter, then try one of the fabulous deserts, the Carrot Cake is yum yum

The patio has a very nice view overlooking the water. The plastic tables and chairs fit the beach vibe well, but don't expect high comfort. It was a shame the noise pollution from the indoor tvs reached outside because otherwise it was quite quaint. For an event I can understand piping sound out there but it was just generic sports talk (and I'm a sports guy.) Beer selection was good. I had the fish tacos which were more like open-faced fish burritos. A little heavy on the lettuce but overall good. Fries were pretty good and fresh. My wife had the turkey club which was likewise more like 2 turkey clubs. The club was average, but the grilled bread gave it a nice crunch. If I were in the area again I wouldn't hesitate to come back for a relaxing meal by the water.

Service great! But burnt kabobs for $25 and (btw they were sirloin)?and a KIDS hot dog for $12.......... I know thing get shipped in and and cost more but $12 for a friggin hot dog... Tourist trap. Thanks but no thanks.

Lovely place! My newly-we'd wife and I stepped off the plane from Seattle, grabbed a rental car, and found JJs. Right on the water. People surfing. Blue blue water. Fantastic Mai tais. And my Kalua pork sliders were awesome. Jaselyn was our bartender and an absolute ray of Hawaiian sunshine. Definitely worth coming here for lunch! Highly rec!

You're gonna go because it's close to the Marriott's, it's safe American food, and it's on the beach. You're gonna be mildly disappointed by the food, especially considering the price you're paying. The combo platter oddly needs salt, the fish and chips have too much breading, and the burger is just a flat patty with orange cheese. But, it was close, coronas were just 3 bucks, and you bought a t shirt and some ice cream nearby, so it was fine. In the end, it was fine.

I had dinner tonite and it must have been the worst weather ever--hot, humid and miserable. Oh, and add 90 degrees. Oh sorry, I m exaggerating--89 degrees. But...thankfully the staff was EXCELLENT!! The bartender was extremely pleasant, smiling and attentive. The waitress was also always smiling and asking if we needed anything. The prices initially appeared resort end prices but the portions were HUGE!! Which is not what u get at the Marriott. Fabulous bar and restaurant! This place gives you a sense of the true meaning of ALOHA. Wow!! Thank you for a great evening!! And the delicious food!!

Great food, location, and service. The cobb salad is one of the best ever and I enjoyed it with a spectacular view across the lagoon. I've also had the kalua pork, a local favorite, and it's excellent as well. My server was prompt, courteous, and attentive. Be sure to stop by the next time if you get the chance!

Rate is based on service. Our waitress had no smile, no suggestions, no accommodations, and no specials. Slow to wait on us but quick with the bill. She was practically hovering nearby and swooped in for the check within minutes of us putting the bills (and tip) on the table. At least she had the decency to ask if we needed change. We waited for our food about 30 mins, to order about the same time. My hub's loco moco and my bowl of seafood soup were big portion-wise and he really enjoyed his gravy. My soup had little to no seafood "meat", inspite of what was stated in the menu. If I would return here again or even recommend this restaurant to someone...the jury is still out on that one.

  • Gary M.

The food was great! A little pricey but it seems like every thing on the island is. Fish and chips were good nothing to exciting. Fish tacos were great according to my wife. The clam chowder was exceptional. Nothing to write home about but a good place for dinner.

  • Wayne S.

Skip it. Walk over to Duke's instead. I had the Monte Cristo, which had so much nutmeg on it I could barely eat it. The "crispy" fish and chips were soggy, and the bar drinks were blah.

  • Billy P.

Amazing view as should be expected right on the water...the food is amazing however like many restaurants the dinner menu is available after 5... The menu then becomes much more extensive as does the prices. OVERAL GREAT EXPERIENCE! The only complaint is my pet peeve at a dining experience... That being, getting rushed through the experience.... PEEVE

  • Cindy M.

Food was fantastic. Ask to eat outside, the view is awesome. Service, Island time... I had the sea liguine which was 50% sea food and 50% pasta.... more seafood than I typically see for this dish. My friend had the fish and chips, which she just raved about.

JJ's Broiler in Kauai has been consistently good every time we are here.... Lovely view near Duke's and the Marriott Beach Club. The best thing about the restaurant is the excellent more than friendly service by Kelli! What a gem! Ask for her when you come in!

One star for the polite, full of excitement, energetic hostess. Another for, well I can't really think of another. This place was Mediocre quality with a five star price tag. First thing that ticked us was the $14 soup and salad. Seriously? The big bomb dropper was the no refill policy on a $3 soda!! WTH????? Our server had no personality and the food was just decent. Very sad I spent $35 here on fish tacos and two beers when that $ could've stretched further somewhere else with better authenticity. Lesson learned!

First time here and it was a great experience. We were greeted and seated right away. We sat outside overlooking the beach. Niely was our waitress and she is the best! Very attentive and always had a beautiful smile. Food was fairly priced. I got the fried egg, bacon and avocado sandwich with fries and my hubby got "the special" which is the teriyaki steak sandwich with fries. Both was very tasty and fresh. Yes! We wood recommend this place and ask for Niely! Tip her well because she is awesome!!!

I gave JJ's a 3 because of the awesome view. The food is so so. I ordered the spinach salad that usually comes with mozzarella cheese, but this one didn't. We ordered the sampler to start off and each item was fried and delicious and came with a dipping sauce for each. Hot mustard for the wonton, a green type of ranch dressing for the fried chicken ever, and cocktail sauce for the calamari. We also ordered the prime rib, Ono with mash potatoes, and chicken pesto. Our portions were big and we brought home leftovers. If you decide to sit outside for the view be careful of the birds and chickens...other than that the view is spectacular. I would also like to know about the Nascar decor...

We went to JJ's for lunch on a Saturday. While busy, we were still able to get a table with a view of Kalapaki Beach. My wife ordered the fish tacos and I had the combo appetizer plate. It included Calamari, wings, onion rings and some Chinese thing that I can't remember it's name. Regardless, all of it was very good. My wife enjoyed the fish tacos which had large pieces of fish. The service was good, quick, and on the ball. I would highly recommend JJ's for anyone in the Lihue area.

This place isn't good. The Mahi fish taco is average and the burger is liquidy and has no seasoning. Fries are oily. Tourist trap. Stay away

We always give JJ's a shot when in Kauai. I think our most recent visit will be the last. Ordered fish and chips that were extremely soggy and inedible. One bite and we were done, server had no concern for the reason the plate went untouched. Bloody Mary was weak, place is on the dirty side of the spectrum. Nice view of the beach though, and good drink prices. I would say it's good for a happy hour stop for drinks and a view. Hopefully they are able to improve in the future and not rely solely on a steady stream of tourist to survive.

    (1)
  • Alison T.

Nope nope nope. Ran in for happy hour on our way back from the beach and got the sampler platter, a Reuben, and the crab cake wrap between the four of us. You know how when you haven't eaten all day, literally ANYTHING tastes good? We found the exception to that rule. The sandwiches were bland and the sampler platter was atrocious (80% undercooked calamari, 10% pork wontons, 5% burnt onion rings, 3% chicken wings, 2% ???, all mushed together in a sad brown/black lump). The service was slow but fine and the french fries were good.

We were here twice during out stay in Lihue and had great experiences both times at JJ's. The staff was attentive, polite, and the drinks were well made. The first day we were here for 8am Lions football and they asked what team we were looking for and promptly seated us in front of the game we needed. The second time we bellied up to the bar and were pleasantly greeted by Nick the bartender. Again great service, good atmosphere and another great experience. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is we didn't eat, but we sure did eyeball a bunch of food coming by us to other tables. We did try JJ's famous ice cream pie and it was wonderful!!!! All and all, a great sports bar in a convenient location from the high priced Marriott bars.

  • Joann M.

You'd think with it being St. Patrick's Day, the place would be humming - NOT! 2 other tables and 4 people at the bar. Should have been a concern to us then. We ordered the Crab Cake appetizer to start. What came out of that kitchen was anything but Crab! 2 very limp patties sitting in a small pool of mayonnaise, we still can't identify what was in it - could be canned salmon, could be canned tuna. We both took a bite and left the rest on the plate. But what we really took notice of was the bottle of 409 Spray sitting on top of the station for utensils, napkins and straws. Owner's plan must be to see how quickly they can close this place.

  • Mike N.

Food can get this bad? How can one serve frozen fish in an island? The service started out well, owner's son JJ, was very friendly and even came to check on us. However, the food and server were bad. I am sorry, but you have a great location and great attitude for service coming from the owner, but the food was really bad.

  • Matt G.

We were looking for a sit down restaurant with some island ambiance at a reasonable price. JJs delivered as their patio was decent and overlooked the kalapaki beach. We were so glad the waitress suggested splitting plates for no extra charge since we have been eating so much on vacations and each enter runs $25-30ish. We had the chicken and teriyaki steak and it was all very good. The staff was extremely friendly and took their time with us but did not delay on service. Food came out FAST. You could find a more romantic place with fancier food but this is a solid mid level restaurant.

View of the bay is great with parking in the shopping center. Food is average for the price, nothing too crazy. Casual atmosphere with laid back feeling. Enjoyed their soup (once you fill it with much needed hot sauce) sampler was good and cosmopolitan turkey burger was well worth it. Had a pile of sweet potato fries too big to finish!

Maybe a 3.5- service was really good. The view is nice and walkable from Marriott. The food was as expected from the other reviews. Don't expect more and you won't be disappointed.

I love coming to JJ's! I frequently come here. The owner always makes you feel welcomed. The food is delicious & the service is great! Majority of the "bad reviews" on here are ridiculously dishonest & obnoxiously stretched. I've gone to JJ's for YEARS. I have no complaints at all! I recommend the seafood linguine & onion rings! It's also great for kids! At lunch time, all of the items on the kids menu come in a JJ's Broiler keepsake pail & shovel. Great for the beach, right out front!

Great view. Good service. Ordered the fresh snapper and was disappointed- very chewy and overcooked. Friend ordered the hamburger and said it wasn't that great. Would only go again for happy hour- not the food.

I can't believe how rude we were treated. We went up to the bar and the first guy looked at us and walked away and another guy came over and asked what we would like. The chairs at the bar were so uncomfortable we asked if we could sit on the patio and he said sure I will get someone for you. We sat there for over 20 minutes with no service. We decided to walk out and go to Duke's and have a drink and dinner. We were shocked that three people on the way out thanked us for coming but yet no one noticed we were NEVER waited on. I guess the football game on the TV was more important than the customer. We will never return to this place there are much better places around Nawillwill.

My wife and I have made a yearly vacations to Kauai for the past several years and while visiting have always made a stop or two at JJ's Bar & Grill! Moving here June of this year, I am now a regular customer (minum once a week, sometimes more) :) Walking in we are always greeted with a smile from Jett or Diana and are ready to seat you. And if you want one of the best Mai Tai's on the island.....go see Roger or Nick! Both these bartenders are friendly and quick to serve you!!! Between me and my wife we have tried quite a few items on the menu and have NEVER been dissapointed with the food or the prices! If you are in Nawiliwili I highly recommend stopping in at JJ's and having a meal and one of their great Mai Tai's. You won't be dissapointed! Hey....tell them Randy sent you!!! :)

Went to JJ's last night, the food was excellent. I had the Ahi Tuna and Slavonic Steak. It was well prepared and very good. They give you a lot of food for the money and I like to eat. We eat here every time we come to Kauai and have never been disappointed.

  • Frank S.

JJ's has been a typical go-to place for lunch or dinner when we stay next door at the Kauai Marriott, and I guess it still will be. However, food has slipped in quality since our previous visits. Service is still good, and there was a nice breeze on the patio, so we were comfortable hanging out. Our waitress was good about honoring our $2 Mai Tai coupons from the Activities desk outside (even though we technically ordered a sandwich and appetizer instead of 2 appetizers), but the calamari was just so-so and kind of rubbery, and our son didn't finish his BBQ chicken sandwich because it "didn't taste very good". The fact that there were a whole bunch of wild Kauai chickens and zebra pigeons pecking around our feet looking for scraps didn't help. The location is so convenient we'll certainly be back when we return to Kalapaki Beach, but there are a bunch of places now to dine nearby, so JJ's will have to earn its extra stars back.

Lunch on a lazy Saturday at JJ's Broiler was deeeeelightful! I had the Kalapaki "Yacht" Club sandwich which came with the best seasoned fries (really crispy & yummy). Hubby had the Loco Moco which so far has been the best on the island (better than The Feral Pig, but maybe their food was bad as they had to cook in the dark with flashlights due to 2nd power outage in 12 hours New Year's Day!) Great deck dining overlooking Kalapali Bay enjoying all the stand up paddlers.

Arrived with four adults, two kids and a baby. Got a decent table and the waitress was prompt and pleasant. We ordered. I ordered New York steak. The other guy ordered Surf n' Turf and everyone else ordered fish or various sorts. All was going well. Three entrees came out quickly: mine, the Surf n' Turf and one fish. Of course, we thought the other entrees would follow quickly since it is very rude to start eating before everyone has been served. But they didn't. It was five minutes before the rest were served. And it sure wasn't because they were so busy ... the place was 2/3 empty. OK, finally get to cut into that sizzling (well, it had been sizzling) steak that supposed to be medium rare. First cut and I notice there is just a tiny area of pinkish in the center ... maybe 1/5 the thickness of the steak. So, I cut through in a thicker part but it is just the same. OK, I can deal with that, so I cut a slice and plop it into my mouth. And promptly spit it back on the plate. It tasted like rubber with snot on it. OK, maybe a bad place on the steak. I cut another slice from a completely different portion. It is worse. Then I pay attention to the steak ... it didn't have the usual New York Strip texture at all ... almost no texture in fact. Then I realized that this is exactly what a steak that has been frozen, thawed and frozen again looks like. I ate some of the Caesar Salad that came with but I was almost sick. I asked for nothing except that the chef and manager look/taste the steak. Then I found out that my friend with the Surf n' Turf also couldn't eat his steak. He is a cook. He thought his had been frozen, thawed and frozen. So, they didn't charge me for the meal which I guess is worth one star. We ate at Portofino next to Duke's from then on ... their New York Steak was stellar!

Had dinner here last night. It was walking distance from the Marriott and had been a long day. I ordered the house salad with a grilled cheese and rice. My fiancé had JJ's World Famous Steak with mashed potatoes and a side salad. The salads were fresh and crispy. My grilled cheese was good but I was expecting more of a Hawaiian rice instead of the white rice it came with. The steak was chewy (asked for medium rare) and was so bland it required salt.

  • Emerson T.

Nice atmosphere. Not too loud. Open air on the bay is very nice. I used to eat here quite often but for some reason hadn't been here in a while. Calamari appetizer was enormous. Easily enough for 4 people. Hot, crispy ample calamari very nicely fried although lacking seasoning. Caesar salad was OK. Overdressed and the dressing had a subtle undertone that was not very Caesar like. Tasted OK but the mysterious flavor didn't belong. Ribeye options are way way way overpriced. The choices are a garlic ribeye and a blue cheese ribeye but no steak without some kind of sauce or topping. I asked for my garlic sauce topper on the side. Instead it was slathered on top and broiled with the steak. The garlic was so overpowering you couldn't taste the meat. And yet it still needed salt. Even scraping it off didn't help. The garlic was insane. A friend had the blue cheese ribeye which was just as drenched in sauce but apparently tasted OK. Mashed potatoes were pretty good. I'll be tasting the garlic for days. It was a decent size although thin. Cooked to a correct medium rare. But did I mention the overwhelming garlic? Lots of food. Very good service. But the steaks are too pricey. The burgers are usually pretty good and the seafood might have been a better choice. I would go back but not for steak.

Gotta be honest...after sitting at the bar for a few minutes, I could help but think "what would Jon Taffer do?" probably a lot! Bartender was super friendly and we had a couple good drinks... Didn't eat but heard food was ok Good location near kalapaki and think with a revamp could make a killing .. Confused by the nascar paraphernalia - what does that have to do with anything?

I joined Yelp simply to warn those who might set foot in this poor excuse for a restaurant. We were starving and the doors were wide open. As were all the seats. This should have been our first indication of impending disappointment. To start, roosters and other fowl were even avoiding the crumbs that fell from our table. If you enjoy a Reuben sandwich and are thrilled to see their menu indeed offers one, DO NOT make this choice. The Rueben will cease to be on your list of favorites. Enough said. Go to Dukes. Or McDonalds. Anywhere else where two or more are gathered.

Just had dinner here this evening...wish we hadn't. We were seated outside to "see a beautiful ocean view" as the server said. It was basically looking at the parking lot with a lot of suspicious activity. Their menu boasts "best fish and chips on Kauai". I asked if the fish is fresh and they batter it...I was told it is "fresh-frozen" which seems like an oxymoron to me (maybe I've seen too many Kitchen Nightmares). I asked if the grilled fish sandwich was fresh...she said it was the same thing. So I settled on a burger...it was bland and unseasoned. My husband had the fish and chips...which were mushy (I warned him!) But what the worse part was...when the sun went down we were unendated with bugs and moths. Crawling up our legs, on our necks, hair and on our food. We had to leave...when we told our server her response was "yeah, they are kinda bad out here". It would have been nice to have a discount on our $50 tag...but no offer was made. So skip this place....go around the corner to Duke's, it's much better!

  • Kendal P.

The service was attentive and the patio view is great. The food was not great - I got the broiled fish and it was bland and overpriced at $18. My husband got the fish and chips and noted they are definitely not the best on the island, despite the claim. I wouldn't come back.

Read the reviews, and decided not to dine here, at first. But the other restaurant's had a terribly long wait time. And since there was no wait here we decided to just take the risk... Absolutely worth it! My entire party of 7 really enjoyed the food and our server (Dennis) was really awesome. He even offered to wash off our baby's booster seat table... This really helps us out for the trip back to the hotel. The steaks were great, from what 3 of my party said. One even said it was as good as Cattlemen's (back in Cali... A famous steakhouse). The burgers are big, and the beef is ground on site... Which I think is a good thing, right? The bread is quality buns. Fresh The fries are crispy and delicious. Good to go. Go!

Waitress, anne, was very nice. Food was just good. We had the kalua pork and moco loco. We have had both of those things elsewhere on the island. It wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst either.

I'm being generous with the stars because the place had a beautiful view. The food is definitely not in sync with the prices.. Wayyy overpriced and I honestly did not like my dish. I ordered the monte cristo. I tried a bit of my sisters burger and my aunts fish tacos and both were just so-so. It was also irritating to me that the sodas did NOT have free refills, but they had a soda machine.. Which made no sense to me. Usually places only do that if they served canned soda. The service was alright, I liked the host but our waitress definitely looked like she was bored and didn't want to be there. Plus, the tables we ate on were kind of gross.. Old plastic patio tables with dirt in the corners. This place really was not that great, and I don't know if I would recommend. Overall, not that great service, no refills on soda, food isn't very good, and to top it all off, it was really expensive. I don't mind paying money as long as it's worth it, but the food was low quality. However, their french fries with ranch were very yummy. Was kind of disappointed with this place. :(

Good fish and chips, mahi-mahi. Friendly and attentive service. Gorgeous views to boot.

Very overpriced! You have been warned. They do have $3 Modelos and Pacificos which were a good deal. Bartenders were really nice and took care of us. My chicken sandwich wasn't bad but my parents quesadillas were awful. No free refills on soda either. Service at a table was okay. Our waiter was really nice too. I would come in here again for $3 Modelos and watch football, but thats about it.

It was a mistake to listen to the previous reviews about JJ Broilers!! We read the reviews and stayed away until our last day in the area. This was one of the best meals we have had on the island. Jaselyn was awesome!! She was quick with our orders and they were exactly the way we had ordered including the special soup for the sick one in our party. Thanks Jaselyn!! The pork and cabbage were delicious. Thanks for the great meal and awesome service!

The food is very good. Suggest Kaluha pork, crab cakes and loco moco. The views are great, entertained with watching surfers. Only gave 3 stars because the bar service not so great and drinks were expensively watered down.

Should have read the reviews before we went. We got the fish special which was over cooked and smelled fishy. One son ordered a burger which he was ok with but wouldn't order again. The other son ordered fish and chips and only could eat one before throwing in the towl. I would avoid and head over to Duke across the walk bridge.

Tourists beware! They will rip you off and take all your vacation money!!! Other than the pricey menu and the waitress tricking you on paying so much more than you ordered, they even made us wait for an hour for a meal! Even our salad took 30 minutes or so until it got to our table. Are salads really that difficult to serve? The only reason it has a one star is because I'm unable to make a zero or a negative star. I suppose the view of the kalapaki bay deserves this one star.

Well, it is a walk away from where we were staying this time, and the place appears to always be packed (we've seen it for years). So, we hooked up with another family, and walked over there. We were easily seated for 7 people (upstairs - no view), and loved the handmade model sailboats throughout the restaurant. The tables were very sticky which was immediately off putting. The excuse was because they were being refinished. If that was true, then no worries. The cost was a little on the high side, closer to a Roy's pricing than the other places on the island, which was odd based on the decor of the building. Anyway, service was fine. Our waitress was at our table quite often, which was good. Funny thing is that they immediately told us that parties of SIX or more have a 17% gratuity, and that there were NO refills of sodas. My Mai Tai was mediocre at best. I immediately moved onto beers, as they are hard to get wrong. For my meal, I got the special. It was a Mahi Mahi prepared with a Thai sauce. Now, Thai sauces are usually excellent, but this one was a cream sauce, that had heat, but no flavor. Odd. Especially with something like a white fish that has no flavor. Usually these spicy sauces are combined with a darker fish like Salmon or Ahi, and they are NEVER creamy. This combination was bad. I did not like it. The rest of the meals were pretty much the same. Needless to say, we did not stay for dessert.

Staff was friendly. I had the chicken teriyaki sandwich. It was a rather large portion and tasted ok. If you wanted drinks and to watch football, it's not a bad place to go.
