We made great memories when we visited Maui for the first time. When most tourists stay at a 5-star hotel in Lahaina, we decided to stay in a serene countryside. It was the best decision to stay here at Upcountry B&B. Michael was very helpful in suggesting the best places to go & less $$ way to go. A 2-story home with huge rooms & private lanais. The bathroom is also huge (Black & White room) with a double sink & closet. Although the shower pressure was weak, we got used to it. We decided to take the Road to Hana early in the morning. Michael packed up our breakfast & even packed up his coffee mugs & containers so we can take some food with us. I love how thoughtful he was that we needed travel mugs, coffee, etc & volunteered he'd send it this way rather than allowing us to skip breakfast. There was no stops for breakfast after we left Kula. He also suggested starting south going east, then up north to Hana and we surprisingly arrived in Hana in 2 hrs!!! Michael knows the area so well and knows what's best for traveling. We left Kula at 6:30 am & ended up stopping by a cliff overlooking the ocean and had breakfast there while watching the gorgeous sunrise!! On our way back, we went against traffic. Going back we drove on one lane roads. It slowed us down but even with that, we were able to stop At Mama's Fish House around noon and got back to B&B around 3pm. We stopped at a lot of beaches & views and still got home early enough. So glad we took his advice. We were also able to get discounts for certain events like Luau, dinner cruise through a company that Michael suggested. Every event we wanted to attend was around $100 each but we were able to save with what the company offered. His dog is so adorable & friendly. I miss him already!! Will def come back here. Nearby town, Lahaina is a one hr relaxed drive with beautiful views. We were able to explore both the country & urban side of Maui just by staying here. We were here for 5 days & we never got tired of the hr drive going & back. It's so totally worth it!!!

I love this place. We had stayed here twice 3 years ago and 5 nights this time. We love to hike in Haleakala. This is the perfect place for us, get used to the altitude and cool air, and the destination is closer. Gabby and Michael are the best hosts. Breakfast is awesome, usually fresh pulpy OJ, with a lot of fresh fruits and 3 cups of coffee for me, and sticky bun (we save it for later treat). Cynthia's review says it all. If you are planning a Haleakala sunrise, let the host know the night before. Tips and recommencations around the area is found in the room. The host is very knowlegable in many areas. Nice DVD collections.

Very nice place in Kula. The rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated, and very clean. The view from our balcony was amazing. Michael has got it all down to a science - breakfast in the morning, he'll prepare something to go if you plan to get up early for the sunrise on Haleakala, the hot tub, DVDs to watch in your room or downstairs if you're tired after a day of hiking, etc, etc. If we're every back around this way, we'll stay here again for sure. Gabby may be the sweetest dog I've meet.

This was our first time visiting Maui and found Upcountry Bed and Breakfast as we were planning our trip. It was centralized to our planned activities, offered nice rooms and a great rate for military. It was easy to book our stay, and we were able to reserve our desired room for four nights. The room we reserved was the Blue Room. It had a king size bed, small breakfast table, mini fridge, gas fireplace, a big bathroom with double vanity, and a lanai with patio chairs and table that has an amazing view. The house is a big 2-story with a nice foyer, multiple rooms, kitchen, and great room. Everything is well maintained and the area is really quiet. Mike, the owner, and his dog, Gabby, were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Mike made checking in and out fast and easy. Knowing the areas of Maui, his suggestions made our vacation easy to plan and beat the crowds. Mike even set us up for sunrise atop Haleakala with breakfast, comforting hot beverages, chairs, and blankets (it does get cold at the summit). The breakfast is great with fresh fruit, pastries, juice, and coffee. Each morning was a different pastry, fresh from a local bakery. If you have any food allergies or don't favor fruit as much, Mike is willing to accommodate and personalize your plate. We really enjoyed our stay, had great memories, and we will stay again if we get the chance to return to Maui.

This was such a treat! We stayed here the night before we went to see the sunrise at Haleakala. The property was very well kept and very spacious- 14' ceilings, great open common space and kitchen with updated appliances and entertainment system. The individual rooms are very clean and updated (the condition of the spacious, private bathroom is the best I've seen in a B&B!). The property also has a nice hot tub to watch the sunset or the stars at night. We mentioned that we were going to Haleakala to watch the sunrise and the owner Michael immediately offered up blankets, fleeces and a well thought out breakfast picnic. The breakfast basket included mango/blueberry scones, fresh apple bananas from the yard, a thermos for the coffee (he included a jelly jar of cream too- none of that powdered stuff!), bottled waters, napkins/sugar/spoons and a guidebook to the constellations with a flashlight. For mornings where you won't be waking up at 3am, breakfast is served in the kitchen with fresh pastries from the bakery up the street. The property is guarded by Gabby, a very sweet yellow lab. He greets you at the door with his tail wagging. The nice woman who happened to be staying there with her husband noted that she usually hates dogs, but Gabby charmed her over :) Overall, this is a great way to spend a night in Maui. You're close to the crater, so you don't have to extra early drive from Kihei or Kaanapali and for $150 a night, you're probably getting a better quality stay as well. If you do end up staying there, say hi to Michael and Gabby for us!

i'm a dog lover, so with Gabby this place automatically gets 5 stars. He is the friendliest lab, loves attention, greets you in the morning when you come down for breakfast and when you come home after sightseeing. Michael is also very friendly, accommodating and just seems like a nice guy. His home is huge and beautiful. As far as B & B's go, the rooms are clean and spacious, the bathrooms have two sinks and large walk in showers, and breakfast is full of amazing local fruit. He has an amazing DVD collection, pretty much Michael and I have the same taste in movies and TV shows (he was catching up on Justified while we were there). No it's not super cutesy with fancy soaps and shampoo and towels and robes, the tv is an older one (not flat screen), but when you come down to it do you really need all that stuff? the price is right, the hosts are terrific and the view is beautiful. and there's a wonderful dog. is more than enough.

The owner was great and accommodating. Gabby (the big beautiful yellow lab) was kind enough to welcome us at the door at check-in. The Blue Room was spacious and had an amazing view. The hot tub was perfect for staying warm while watching the stars at night. It did get a little chilly (we stayed for a weekend in January). It is a great location if you plan on going up Haleakala or hitting the Hana highway in reverse. He provided us with a travel bag, blankets, and jackets for the morning sunrise on Haleakala and if we had asked would've given us info on great places to stop on the Hana. The breakfast served in the dining room was great as well with fresh pastries and fruit. Great weekend getaway from Waikiki and the rest of Oahu.
