Great great great margaritas. Go there for happy hour from 3-6 pm. Food is filling for the price. It's pretty good. We had carnitas tacos. The pork was good but the tacos were just alright. But the margaritas are good sized and delicious. We're going back for more tonight. Service is super friendly. Indoor and outdoor seating. Went back tonight. Margaritas were more watered down. Service not as good...

There were two other tables in the restaurant with people at them and they sat me next to the table of 8 which I thought odd since there were other booths to choose from, but, this isn't a high class restaurant. Unfortunately that made my time really loud and I had to deal with a booth for 4 and a table for 4 butted up to each other and all the food passing and loudness that comes with that as well. In this restaurant it was the only time that I experienced "island time" it seems that most things took longer. It took 30 minutes to get drinks and then place our order, it was painful and I was hungry. (again only two other tables). Once our order was placed though our food was out in 4 minutes, not kidding. Food was average Mexican food, nothing to rave about, but it made my tummy happy to have it. I got a lot of food for my money and the server was nice if not really slow.

First time ever to eat in Maui n the wait staff was rude went thru a basket of chips and still had to ask for our drinks. We will never go back. Food was not that great.

Maybe I'm spoiled with Mexican food back at home since we have it 2-3 times a week. Maybe this place was having an off-day. Or maybe tourists in Kihei just don't expect much from this place... Whatever the reason(s) may be, I would highly suggest Diamond's over this place. It's only 1 shopping complex over. Stale chips amd mediocre tasting entrees are not worth your time and money while there are sssoooo many other options out there. Shrimp burrito bowl ($12): entire thing is about the size of my hand, and believe me, I have small hands (my ring is size 4).

Okay Mexican food. I really liked my fried ice cream. My boy friend and I had them deliver. The delivery man was very nice and the food took about 60 mins to get here. They forgot my tortillas, other than that very yummy. Great prices.

5 star service & tasty food. Must say the breakfast margarita was my favorite item. I ordered "el flaco" on a skillet which consisted of scrambled eggs & veggies on a skillet. My food was good, but nothing memorable. Downside of my visit was lack of cleanliness. Greasy menu & table items pretty much grossed me out. Door windows were dirty.

Not a large place inside, large tvs over the bar area which don't overwhelm the space with volume. Delivery available. If you need the restroom, get the code from a server, as they are shared with the other businesses in the strip mall. Prompt kitchen when you come in at off-rush times. Servers able to explain the menu items well. Adjusting / subtracting items from your choice seems to be easily handled. Seems that the green chile is vegetarian. Was looking to find pork green chile as served in New Mexico or Colorado. This tomatillo and jalapeno stuff is probably the hottest I've found on Maui. Not over the top, but happily mouth hot. There is a kama'aina discount of 15%. Best to mention you live on-island. Indoor and outdoor seating. Be sure to see the hostess for seating in or out.

Aloha! Awesome Mexican food in Kihei area. Better than what I thought it would be. Very reasonable in price. Burrito Chicken & Steak bowl, chicken wings, and Happy hour tacos are well worth it. Margaritas $5 - Well drinks $4. Amazing Service! Must try it for yourself. Mahalo

A family favorite we have been coming here since I was a young child. Food is always amazing and the staff great. The owner is very personable and friendly. Even the quality of the food is better than the other amigos.

Dinner tonight was awesome! The night started with some fresh tortilla chips with home made salsa and fresh quackamole. Both of our choices for dinner was excellent! Carne Asada burrito, and beef chimichanga ! The waitress was fun and friendly and pulled out all the stops by drawing funny faces with "his" and "hers" on our to go boxes. The beer was cold and kept coming! We highly recommend it!

Great restaurant. Nice bar for watching games. Had the taco salad and chili Colorado. Chicken on the salad was perfect I'd like more cilantro. Meat on the Colorado needed to be trimmed so there was a lot less fat. Chips and salsa were great too

Wonderful service. Everyone here is so nice. Super fast. Great hours. This is our go to spot! We have had the breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast burrito is great. The happy hour is seven days a week & good prices. $2 tacos! Stephanie, Amy, Gilbert and Mitay are a few of the many wonderful staff here! Come see for yourself.

My favorite place for chile Colorado burritos. Pork always tender and flavorful. I've also had the lengua tacos before and was really good too. My wife got the enchilada combo and my daughters got the keiki quesadilla. Both where good. Service friendly and reasonably quick. Awesome place

Decent food; decent service - but nothing to get overly excited about. There is no restroom here, only a shared restroom at a different part of the step mall. Germaphobes beware: it's icky.

One of the only times Yelp has steered me wrong. Maybe you need to be hammered to enjoy it or maybe I'm used to the great Mexican food we have here in California, but this place was awful. We were hungry and tired from a long day at the beach and this looked like a fun and easy place to eat at with the kids. Since we were so hungry, we would have been happy with just about anything that was halfway decent. I give them 1 star for the friendly service, but the positives end there. The salsa tasted like canned tomatoes and garlic salt. The enchiladas were inedible, meats were dried and crusty, beans straight out of a can. We paid $50+ for the meal and ended up eating the chips and leaving the rest of our food there on the table. It was that bad. They do not have a bathroom! There is one bathroom at the end of the strip mall (not at all convenient when you have little kids) and it was hold-your-breath filthy. The gas station down the street had a bathroom that was 10x cleaner than this one. The tables & menus were covered in a layer of grime and grease. All in all, a poor experience.

Best Mexican breakfast I've had so far. The prices are inexpensive and our waiter was pleasant :)

Better menu than many Mexican places I've been, not that I go for Mexican food much tho, too heavy. Server was a bit on the slow side (not that attentive, forgetful but nice enough), but great relaxed atmosphere and playing the Olympic women's hockey final, yay! The lengua quesadilla was very tasty. I'd come back for sure - the Caldo de Rez looks fantastic. My only complaint is not enough selections of hot sauce, tho we did get to sample some fresh cut Hawaiian chilli at our table, mmmmm.... And the bathrooms are clean, bonus.

$9.99 fajitas Friday's, any kind! Yesssss! We love this place and considering how busy it is, so does everyone else! Great tasting, great service, great value, great Mexican food. Love the peach margaritas!

Best Mexican food I've ever had on Maui! Growing up in SoCal I've been pretty spoiled with delicious Mexican. This place certainly satisfied my craving for Mexican food while on the island. Bonus happy hour menu from 3-6

We stopped in for happy hour. I've only eaten at their Kahului location and found a delish beef burrito similar in taste to the defunct Taco Lei's version, which I've been searching high and low for. ATMOSPHERE: New-looking, small space in Azeka Marketplace. High ceilings, lots of windows, good-sized bar area. BEVERAGE: Modello Negra - For happy hour, the 20-oz. size was only $5 ($1 off) and came in a frosty mug which made the beer super cold. Loved it! SERVICE: The female bartender was friendly. I questioned why one of my beers wasn't at the happy hour price when it was ordered before 6pm - she just brushed it off and said it must've been after 6pm when I ordered it. Not a big deal as it was only $1 but it's the principle of the whole thing. Oh well, less tip from me. OVERALL: Nice place to grab some brew, but there are tons of other places with happy hours and better service.

Average food + below average service = Meh. My wife and I were on our way to the airport and decided to stop in Kihei for a quick lunch. Growing up in CA, I love Mexican food and this place was open early it was perfect. We were seated quickly but the server forgot to bring us chips and salsa. Everyone else around us had them. Eventually he brought us water and took our orders but still no chips/salsa. Finally another waitress actually accidentally brought them for us, intending to bring them for another table, so we just got lucky. The place wasn't too busy, but it took a solid 40 mins to get our meals. My wife had the French toast special which was way overcooked, black and hard. I had the shrimp taco plate which I ordered without onions. It came with onions unfortunately, so the waiter took the plate, scooped off the onions and gave it back to me. Eh??? Ok, I realize this isn't a 5 star restaurant but I doubt McDonald's or Taco Bell would do such a thing. At least the tacos were tasty. The refried beans were dry and flavorless though. The decor and ambiance were typical of a Mexican restaurant. Bottom line: We won't be coming back and I recommend you spend your hard earned cash at another of Kihei's excellent eateries.

It's funny seeing all of the mixed reviews for amigos. Seems like service here could be spotty. Luckily for us we stopped in for lunch on our way back from the Haleakala crater hike and had a great meal. Sat at the bar and the bartender immediately whipped us up some drinks and got us some chips and salsa. I was happy to find that they served micheladas- and at a bargain price. The bf had a pacifico and we ordered our food. The shrimp enchiladas with green sauce were on point. Good portion with rice and beans. Veggie burrito was standard. I was happy to find that their green sauce tasted of fresh green chile jalapeños. I appreciate the heat! We also received a little mango margarita slush sample and the beer free of charge! Food is reasonably priced and food was good, especially for maui standards. Would definitely come back for those enchiladas or huevos rancheros for breakfast. They deliver too!

  • Scott M.

Not bad, but not real good. Average service. Do not get the cheese enchiladas, mine came without cheese melted inside. The salsa is awesome, but the chips were stale. The margaritas were pretty good. The server was not very cheery. Update, I was going to give 3 stars, but moved down to 2 stars. Moved down because I had to ask twice to correct my bill. It was happy hour and I was not credited the discount. I asked for the correction, they corrected the bill but added in another area. Sneaky.

Decent food for the price. If you have a taste for authentic Mexican/Latin American cuisine, then go here. The service was quick & attentive. They serve breakfast all day & have outdoor seating. The burrito prices averaged about $11. Perfect place for something different than chain restaurants or high end lunch pubs. The chips & salsa was complimentary & plentiful.

We wanted some Mexican food and this place was close by where we were staying, so we decided to try it out. We were so glad we did! My husband loved this place so much he would have came everyday if he could. At first, I was a little skeptical about Mexican food in Hawaii since we're from California. But to my surprise, this place is actually pretty good, very comparable to the Mexican restaurants at home. My husband order a burrito and I ordered the Hawaiian burger. The food is tasty and cooked just right. We also had some margaritas to celebrate and they were delicious! The staff is attentive, nice, and friendly. They did a great job! It didn't matter which server's table we belonged to, it seemed like everyone helped each other out. We also enjoyed sitting outside where this bird was very comfortable with human contact. It had red feathers on its head and if you give it food, it will gently take it right off your hands. Very fun!

Delivery service terrible. Think it might have been a busy night but it happens Every. Single. Time. Always late, food cold, or missing something. Rude service when asking about food after over an hour.

After a rainy day shelling , time for a good meal. I have always been pleased with amigos food, service and atmosphere. But today was exceptional. I was alone so I sat at the bar. It was the best service by far. And today's special POG margarita was delicious. The chili relleno was delicious as always with the extra spicy salsa! Thanks for a great lunch !

My husband and I came here on our last night in Maui! We LOVED it! The atmosphere was chill, the service was spectacular. Our waitress was very attentive. The food came quickly after it was ordered and it was delicious!! The ingredients were fresh and tasty. I wish I had more space in my belly to try other items on the menu and to just sit there and eat! Haha If we're ever fortunate enough to go back to Maui, we will definitely be back at Amigos :)

We ate there last night. Very casual almost too casual. Cadillac margarita was awesome. Not too much sugar. Shrimp burrito was killer! Lots of shrimp! Definitely go there. Simple and good and reasonably priced

What happened, dear Amigo's? I used to love, love, love this place but it's now mediocre at best. The food was served lukewarm, the flavors were bland, the service indifferent. Kihei is in desperate need of a superior Mexican restaurant now that the rumors have proven to be true: Amigo's has sadly taken a turn for the worse.

We got the veggie taco (which was beans, lettuce and cheese) and the vegetarian nachos. It wasn't anything great. It was okay for a mid-day snack.

All I can say is beware of this place, the staff is horrible. We walked in and walked out. The waitress that wAs supposed to help us had a bad attitude And gave us smart remarks about getting a table. I would NEVER go there again. If they don't change they will not last very long as they need a lesson on customer service. Doesn't even deserve one star, more like zero stars. This is in regards to the Kihei location, not too sure how it is at their other locations. Hopefully it is better.

GO just go to this place if you like Mexican you will love it after this place. Their OWN salsa's my body rejects HOT nowadays the milder are very flavorful in fact enjoyable they would make a great drink over ice. The food at this place... I choose to order everything at least once. The only disappointment (once) was when I got home there were no chips for my guac (oh BOO HOO) oddly enough it was still a bummer but I said get real I slathered it on the meal and gained 2 more happy pounds

  • Alex B.

This place was great! I don't know what anyone is talking about saying its not authentic mexican. I am from California and this was definitely authentic. The service was great, the food was good, and it was all for a good price. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone staying in Kihei. Definitely better than Freds!

Alright...I will start this off with the understanding that I have eaten at Amigos 2 times in the last month. The food is ok, BUT make sure that you ask on the phone EXACTLY what you are getting!!! Both of the times that I have ordered from them they have messed up my order. Not the food, but what their PRINTED menu said they were going to prepare. The first time we ordered from the printed menu it was for their burrito special which said, "Any burrito $6.99." When we called that was then changed to, "You can choose from (these 3 burritos)." NOT any burrito!! Tonight we ordered 2 cheese enchiladas and a Pollo Loco Burrito. Like I mentioned above, the food was good. Here is the problem...the only place on the menu that says anything about the burrito is in the "Specials" section of the back cover of their 3 fold menu that we got from the last time we were there about 1 1/2 weeks ago. It says, specifically, "Served with rice beans, & three corn or flour tortillas." It DOES NOT come with the rice, beans, or tortillas!!!! When I called to ask about it they told me, "Sorry. That was a misprint." Alright...I understand "misprints" BUT when I spend $10.99 on a burrito expecting rice, beans, and tortillas, I SHOULD GET THEM!! Now onto the math. The enchiladas are on the menu for $9.99, and the burrito (that came without everything advertised!!) was $10.99. So far that brings the total to $20.98. Now I will add in the $4 delivery charge (which I have no problem paying since they are bringing me food!) The tax in Kihei is 4.166%. With that in mind, the total for our dinner should have been (EVEN IF WE PAY TAX ON THE DELIVERY CHARGE!!!) $26.02. My card was charged $26.56! I know that this is only $.54 more than it should have been, BUT I was also expecting to get more food (rice, beans, tortillas). So if you want pretty ok food and to get less than what is on their printed menu that you got a week and a half ago...this is the place for you. As for me...it's taking A LOT of self control not to light a paper bag of dog poo at their front door! (ps...I would never ACTUALLY light a bag of poo! I was just making a point that I am less than happy with this company and will NEVER eat there again!) (pps...we did tip the driver! This was not his fault and he did a great job!)

  • Chad M.

I got my Burrito Loco with green chile, and as usual, was great! I got this one to go. I was charges an extra dollar just to have my green chile 'on the side.' Come on.... Charge extra for my sauce on the side? Would you rather have put it on the burrito and it be a slithering gooey mess by the time I got home? Then I really would have left a bad review. On top of it all, I asked for a few chips to eat with it. The guy handed them to me but then says, ' normally I would charge you, but not this time.' Really? If I had sat down to eat, I get them free anyway. The food is good, but the customer service needs some work and stop with the nickel and diming for everything. Jeez. The food prices are sufficiently jacked up to cover all the little things that should be complimentary.

Had lunch here the other day. Shredded beef flautas were tasty and my better half enjoyed his big burrito. Service was excellent and very personable. We typically go to their Kahului location since it's closer to home but this Kihei one has outdoor seating which is nice.

We live on Maui and decided to give Amigo's a try in their new location. The staff was friendly and they seemed busy so we were hoping this was a good sign. We ordered drinks and waited..and waited and finally decided to go to the bar to check on them. They had been sitting there, ice melted for quite a long while. Our entrees took 45 min to arrive. We watched another table receive their dinner long before we did...and they sat down 30 min after we did. It just didn't make sense. When our food did arrive it was simply not good food. The quality of the meat was so poor we actually couldn't chew it. Now we know things move slow on Maui but the combined slow service, neglected drinks, long wait for very disappointing food is too may strikes for us to ever eat there again. I cannot recommend this restaurant.

This place does not even deserve the one star rating I just gave it. We walked in on a Friday night and there were 2 booths open inside. The hostess gave us a choice to either sit in the front by the door or in the back. We chose the back because we had our 1-year-old with us. After 10 minutes of waiting, we noticed some people walk in and get seated at the front by the door. They immediately get chips, salsa and drinks. We waited another 10 minutes, and still no one came by. After wasting 20 minutes, we got up and left. On the way out, I mentioned to a man at the door that we were waiting and were never helped. He apologized and offered us a free meal (which was nice, but I would NEVER stay). Never again! How can you forget about customers in a tiny place like that????

Wow - I don't know what the haters were talking about - it was great!! I had low expectations after reading reviews, but our valet at the fairmont said it was his favorite Mexican restaurant on the island. Our waiter was extremely attentive, came back 3-4 times to make sure we had everything. He refilled drinks promptly, and best of all the food was excellent. We live in so. Cal, and my husband is Mexican, so we know good Mexican food! If you haven't tried it cause of the reviews, it's definitely worth the visit.

The taste of Mexican cuisine tucked away in a small strip mall in PARADISE. This place has the true ALOHA spirit - GREAT food, spectacular prices and top notch service. After a long day in the sun the chicken chimichanga and chicken soft taco I ordered were destroyed in a blink of an eye, leaving me a confused food coma state-of-mind. I will be a returning customer & I'd be willing to bet that this is the best Mexican food on the island. The owner seems to be a really nice guy and hustles around waiting on tables and making sure everything is delicious. !Oh So Very Ono!

Tucked back in the shopping strip of the main street this place serves up great authentic mexican food, just as the name states. It's a small place, here in Kehei (Maui). The services was great and quick and the staff was friendly. All the prices are good and cheap compared to hotel food, of course. I would compare the prices of the is place to our local mexican places in Las Vegas, NV. This place is not the trendy mexican restaurant with the patio views of the beach or ocean, again, its in a shopping strip next to a laundry mat, charter school and small local workout gym.

We went there for the Tuesday special, listed on their website as $6.99 burritos. The menu said their burrito special was $8.99. Of course, we were told that the website was wrong. Well, it has been wrong for months. Menu said there is a Kamaaina discount (with HI ID) but we were told that the 10% (yippee) discount wouldn't apply to the special. Our server asked if we wanted rice & beans with our burritos. Should have asked, since I thought it would be included. Nope, it was an extra $1.5 each. She also asked if we wanted the green chili sauce, since it went so well with the fish. Another $1 each. Come on!! The burrito was big, but that was because of the huge amount of refried beans. Dunno why the side order of refried beans were recommended. We'll go to Maui Tacos or Jaws next time.

Hey Amigos - when are you going to update your website? I would understand if prices were wrong for a few weeks or even a month or two ... but your prices have been wrong for a lot longer than that. 6.99 Wed chimichangas? Not so much. They have been 9.99 since you opened in the new location. I always knew whats his face was a scheming shyster from his shameless "up-selling" but really it has gone too far. This place is a scam. You would be better off eating at taco bell.

Sorry folks but I would have to say this was the WORST Mexican food I have ever tasted. Maybe it was because we walked in 20 minutes before closing but that shouldn't matter!! We both ordered Chili Relleno. They were SO GREASY they made me Gag and thats hard for me to do. Literally they were so soggy it was like sucking on a sponge full of grease! I love A good Chili Relleno but this one was AWEFUL. I also had an enchilada that was not so good either. I forget what my girlfriend got with her Relleno but she couldn't eat it either. The sauces were flavorless. We both left almost everything on our plates. After sinking our teeth into a sponge full of grease didn't agree with our stomachs. I like Polly's up country but I had heard friends talk about Amigos so we went to try it. They could pay me to go there and eat and I wouldn't! Good for them to be voted the best but in my opinion I would rate it the worst. Maybe they were having a bad day but I won't ever go back. If I saw that people had not really touched their food I would ask them why. What a waste of $30.00 dollars and I was nauseous all night after.:((

Went for lunch. Not crowded. Seated quickly, ordered drinks. Chips and salsa arrive, but not drinks. Ate the chips and salsa, and still no drinks. The bartender was busy arranging chairs and sweeping. The waitress did not get his attention and indicate he had a drink order. Not bartenders fault. Reading the reviews it is obvious that service is their problem. The food was good, in fact I believe the best Kihei has to offer. I ate here when it was not busy, I would never come here if it was crowded, because of the slow service.

Excellent and well-priced Mexican food. Complimentary chips and salsa and also guacamole. Server was extremely attentive and refilled our chips basket and salsa bowls without us asking. Food was great. prices were great. Go there!

Move Amigo's back to "ordinary." I stopped for lunch with high expectations, and instead had the worst tamales I've ever had in a restaurant. Better than from the freezer, but not by much. So put Amigo's in the desperate-for-Mexican-food category. Still good chips and salsa.

  • Michelle M.

Love the food here. They have a self service salsa bar which I love. I ate the shrimp Diablo, super spicy and yummy. My other half had the shredded beef burrito, huge and yummy. This is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in Maui.

  • Nick C.

Honestly not worth your time if you've had REAL Mexican food. I had the fajita special, which the server made sure to let me know it didn't have rice or beans with it. However neglected to tell me there would be no cheese, bummer. Also charged extra because we requested jalapenos since they didn't have hot sauce, wait, a Mexican food place without hot sauce? The portions weren't great, and not enough tortillas for my fajitas. They do give chips and salsa with your meal though, even though the salsa is mediocre. The server also tried to make us feel bad for not ordering alcohol. I personally was dehydrated from a long day at the beach, and just wanted to drink some water and didn't appreciate the pushiness. The food was okay, but I would never go back here, I make better Mexican food at home. In fact, I probably don't think i'll waste my money on any Mexican cuisine here in Hawaii. It's just not the place for it.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! It's really hard to find good Mexican food on Maui and I'm sure this place isn't even the 100% true real deal either BUT its as close as they get. First off, this place is a dive. Don't come here expecting fancy tables or anything fancy at all for that matter. I try to come once a week or when my jeans allow me too anyway. My favorites: Chile Relleno plate Chile Verde Alambras ALL of their burritos Jesus the owner is really cool and he'll remember you if come in often. I recommend you check it out. Bonus: They deliver if you live in Kihei!

We drove from Lahaina to eat here, after finding it on Yelp. We were so sick of trying-to-be-posh, overpriced, lame, touristy food that we thought we'd try something different. Also, if I go more than three days without Mexican food, I get the shakes. It is my CRACK COCAINE. Ahem, anyway, this place was a dive in all the right ways. Cheap. tiny space. Alcohol. Crazy locals. Good food. What more do you want? Sidekick went to town on the chimicunga. I had a lovely taco salad without meat that totally hit the spot. Coming from California, obviously this wasn't the best Mexican food I've had in my life, but the stars were aligned and it totally hit the spot. Couldn't have been happier and we did the hour drive back to the resort with purring tummies.

We make an annual visit to Maui in November. Inevitably, our first restaurant choice is Amigos in Kihei. We went last night and, as usual, we loved it. We like the way the owner Jesus, recognizes and greets his guest. He is friendly, and attentive without being obsequious. I had an ice cold Dos Equis is on tap at a very reasonable $5 for a twenty-four ounce glass and my dinner companion had a peach Marguerita which was delicious. Amigos doesn't skimp on the tequila either. The service is excellent. More chips? (Free of course) No problem. The salsa bar gives the diner plenty of choices both hot and mild and the food is authentic and tasty. I had the chile verde and my partner had a shredded beef chimichanga. Both dishes were well cooked and perfectly prepared. Am I being too complimentary. No way. This restaurant is a true gem. We will go back several more times for burritos, enchiladas and mole. Mnnn, I can taste it already. Amigos, currently in a small shopping mall off the main drag, will soon be moving to larger premises on South Kihei rd. Buena suerte Jesus.

Phenomenal 5 star find! Great Mexican food here in Kihei! We went 2x and enjoyed it immensely both times. Both of us got their combo platter - 3 choices - the chili relleno, enchilada, and tamale. It was not a std 3 choice combo - but we noticed they had a 2 choice combo with their tamale and asked for the tamale for our 3rd choice and they were OK with that. We were glad they were willing to modify their standard menu choices. BTW - we got 50% off our 2nd entree with a coupon found in "This Week in Maui" - if you can't find this coupon book, the books were at the Shaka pizza place a few doors down. That made dinner much more affordable both times! Salsa bar at the counter - all their salsas and condiments were delicious! They had mild chunky salsa, spicy red salsa, salsa verde, as well as jalapenos, and a pickled veggie mix. Went well with the tortilla chips and to accent our main courses. Great spice / heat / flavor! Love it when all the salsas have a kick to them that isn't just heat but delectable layers of flavors Excellent food, friendly service, and I wish we were back on Maui to enjoy them again! Yes, it's a cheap tiny space, and who cares with such good food and warm friendly atmosphere. They're in a strip mall off Lipoa Street which wasn't too hard to find - go for it!

My perspective on this spot : I grew up in a Mexican home with the best Mexican food ever. I have been on this Island for over a year without any authentic Mexican food except for the tortillas that were sent from home and what I have made. I never order chicken from a Mexican joint unless its pollo asado, but it was part of the chimi special so I decided to try it. It was the best shredded chicken I have had. I was juicy, not re-heated in the micro ( I can tell by the flavor), and seasoned so well. The hot salsa was really good, and I can't wait to go back and try out a few more things to see how they hold up. They were speaking Spanish so that was a good sign. Nothing like going to an ethnic restaurant not run by anything close to ethnic. The real test will be the next visit when I try their beans.

Amigo's was a perfect place to take the kids for a meal. We were staying in Wailea and needed a change from the overpriced - sometimes over technical meals we were seeing. Amigo's was just right. As one prior review mentioned, the restaurant is in a strip mall and warning - it is small! But it's cozy and has a certain charm to it that grows on you as you stay. Service was great - salsa bar allowed you to get a taste of different salsas. My wife and I always gauge a mexican restaurant on two key dishes - carnitas and chicken mole. The carnitas was wonderful - a little crisp on the outside but moist and favorful on the inside. The mole was also very good - a little less "cocoa" favor but had a great smokey element to the sauce. Kids loved the classic soft and hard tacos. This place is the opposite of "fine dining" which was just what we were looking for - informal, great prices for great food, and nice people.

The question to ask yourself when trying any Mexican dining place anywhere is: Do you want taco bell or various versions of the real thing? Amigos is down home and pretty much as close to that real thing as you can get. We've been here several times and it's the same each visit. Good food, well prepared and doesn't sit on the plate in a big puddle of gringo goo and you wondering what the ingredients are. The place is small. I dont think you could pack more than 18-20 people into it if you tried. Don't expect an upscale ambience either. It's located in an off-broadway strip mall with a magnificent view of the parking lot. It's a full menu with beer only. Service is good and attentive but not in your face. They actually let you eat and not interrupt every 2 minutes with the water jug.The side condiments are especially good. Well done and clearly not scooped out of a big bucket that's been sitting in the refer since last week.. Try it, you'll like it..or maybe you would rather dine at taco bell???

Loved it. We were craving Mexican and followed Yelp here. We were not disappointed. Chimichangas were great as were the taquitos. The chicken chimi's were surprisingly flavorful. Also great deal on brew. 24oz dos equis on draft served in a frosty mug. Totally hit the spot. Also, their homemade salsa was awesome. They serve a salsa verde that actually has some real kick and flavor which I love.

Ate there last night and the food was good! Not the best Mexican food I've Had but it does the job! The server was great very nice and kept the chip n salsa coming!

A small strip mall restaurant that I would have passed up if it weren't for the reviews here on Yelp. I am so glad we ate here because the food was outstanding! Better tanned the Mexican food back home in California, and believe me, that is saying a lot! Do not pass this place up if you have the chance to stop and eat!

"Mexican food" is my all-the-time-food. When I travel I like to try the regional variations. I have been blown away by what's called Mexican food in Pooler, Georgia or Kihei, Hawaii. I was hungry for Mexican and read reviews on Amigo's. That being said, Amigo's Kihei Mexican is just like Mexican from home! I ordered a combo plate with chile relleno and beef enchilada. What I got was very good. In fact, it kind of blew me away that the enchilada sauce tasted home-made from roasted chiles. Of course the prices are higher than mainland prices but it's certainly within the norm of Hawaii. There is a wide variety of salsas that you get yourself. I think the owner's daughter was my waitress. She was so sweet. I didn't know to get my own salsa and I heard him tell her in Spanish to tell people where to get the salsa. I appreciated that because I knew he cared I was having a good experience there. Me, a haole gringo from California!

Fantastic place for Mexican. Prices are good and the food is fantastic. The carnitas is the best this side of socal. It was crispy on the outside, tender inside and just the right combination of light and dark meats. They also have a serve yourself salsa bar and drinks. It's in a weird strip mall that's hidden from the main strip so if you're looking for ambiance and a view then this is the wrong place. But if you're looking for good food, nice people, and a decent price then definitely go.

I had the enchilada chile relleno combo and wife had taco salad. We both enjoyed the meals. Food was a little bland but we ask for spicier salsa which made them exceptional. The service was extraordinary.

Should be 3.5 stars. Nice Ono fish tacos with lots of fish, but the corn tortilla was just OK not great. The chili relleno was really good and the cheese enchilada was perfect.

  • Rick L.

Service at lunch time was okay. No kick to the salsa. Two carnita tacos, rice and beans for $10.42. Not much flavor and just way too expensive. I'll go to Kahului if I want better tasting Mexican food!

  • Jim J.

I was not impressed with Amigo's. The ambience was nothing special, and actually seemed kind of "greasy". And the food seemed to all have off flavors. The guacamole tasted like cheddar and the Chicken Chimichanga had the flavor of curry. The rice and beans were both so gooey and starchy that neither was appetizing. If this is "the best Mexican food on Maui" there is a huge opportunity for improvement. Maui Tacos was head and shoulders above this place.

Amigo's is great. Be careful, the owner is really good at add-on sales. My advice is to keep it simple here. Nice fresh house made salsa selections. The green one is great. The real treat is the house made pickled carrots. They don't always have them. They started packaging and selling them in fact. There are two things that stand out on the menu for me. The first is the Pork Chile Verde. Super flavorful and always tender. I bought a catering pans worth for a Super Bowl party once. Get the chile verde in burrito form and get it wet. Comes filled with beans, rice, cheese and the meat. Covered in cheese and an extra scoop of chile verde. If you were to eat here once...get the chile verde. If they are out of the CV, the only other thing I get is the Carne Asada tacos. Just meat and some onion and cilantro. Super simple, but great. One last note, they open at 9 and do serve some mexican breakfast dishes. Nice alternative to the bacon, egg, hashbrown thing.

Very good Mexican food. Burittos were good size and very yummy. The grilled fish taco was yummy. The tamales were ok. The Margaritas were good as well. Alot of locals. Good place and won't break the bank

Only reason I didn't give it a 5 is the environment. A hole in the wall in a strip mall. (Kihei location) But this is authentic Mexican! There's a special every night. Prices are reasonable. Dos Equiis on tap in chilled mugs. Love their chile relleno. Great spanich rice and homemade beans come with entres.

It's always a relief to walk into a restaurant with diners the same ethnicity as the fare. We were not disappointed. Food is great and service was helpful. This place is a little off the beaten tourist path but that's ok - it's small and would be too crowded if everyone decided to go. The food is as good as anything in southern cal. Real Mexican food made by real Mexicans. If you want the real deal, not the pseudo tourist crap, come here. The food at the Kihei location is better than in Lahaina.

THIS place is most definitely the best mexican restaurant in Maui. I think it is better than any in Sacramento, where i live. Very nice staff also.

  • Kristina C.

The food was ok. The margarita I ordered tasted a little watered down, and the portions were smaller than I expected. The shredded beef tasted a little too sweet, and they put this large dab of sour cream on top of the enchilada, which I though was unnecessary. It was cheap food, but ok. You get what you pay for I guess. Also, it was a little too small. We were sitting to this really annoying guy who had ADD and was obnoxiously telling stories to his friends. Probably would not recommend this place to a friend.

We went to Amigos after reading previous yelp reviews and I would love to say it was great....but it wasn't. The service was bad. Not just bad but really bad. We sat were delivered chips and salsa (fair) and waited over 10 minutes just to be approached. My fiance went in to speak with the manger and his response was that the server had to many tables and have us to another server. In the mean time, we asked a passer by server for drinks, reluctantly she took the order which came out 10 minutes later. Food was fair. Chile verde was ok but very fatty pork. Chicken tacos were good. Margaritas were over iced and weak. The death sentence of any alcoholic beverage. Servers need sever remediation. Multitasking doesnt happen here. Lastly it is fairly expensive for mexican and im coming from la! There is better on Maui and unless the owners do a reality check, this will also say "adios"! PS The location has changed in kihei to the Longs Shopping Center.

Chimichangas are so delish!! This is one of my fav food spots on Maui. I always get the ground beef chimichangas and my boyfriend always gets the chicken chimichanga. They are consistently delicious every time!

Great place, looks a little sketchy from the outside, but the food was excellent. I recommend the fish fajitas - nice punch of flavour right there! They serve beer, which I drank, and was very pleased with. We'll be back for sure!

  • Nathan K.

might have been the best meal we ate on Maui. The owner waits tables, works like a slave, quick service and plenty of attention. The ceviche is great, carnitas tasted great. I'd enjoy a spruced up salsa bar, but for complete meals under $15 clams in Maui, one shouldn't complain. Corona is on tap: how can it get any better than that? It's clear this business cares about it's customers and it's reputation.

I thought I was back in California eating here because of the taste and location, just like a good strip mall Mexican food place you find in CA. The food and service was very good and the price was great too.

Had the carnitas plate and it was DELICIOUS. Meat was tender and flavorful, yummy beans, and awesome salsa. We're from California and didn't have high hopes that we would find good Mexican on Maui, so this was a pleasant surprise. This casual smallish restaurant is located in a strip mall which was a little tricky to find at night since the sign wasn't lit, but glad we persevered. Can't speak to the tamales, but judging by the carnitas plate alone (and my partner loved the carne asada as well), Amigo's gets two solid thumbs up!

Being from Chicago then LA I had access to great authentic Mexican food. After a long search on Maui a small island I found Mexican food that I call GREAT! And the Bloody Mary was top notch! Thanks bartender. The steak on the carne asada burrito was perfect flavor and texture. Cooked to perfection the tortilla quality was awesome and the overall value and service experience was some of the best on Maui. Living on a fancy island I try a bit of everything and I'd choose Amigos before I chose any of the fancy, 5 star restaurants with poor service and overpriced foods!!! The location is convenient. Price is of value, food tastes great. They take pride in good service and it really feels like you're getting an authentic Mexican immersion! Enjoy!

The hubby nearly went 4/4 days with Mexican, except yesterday the taco joint closed at 8:30 and he had to make do with Subway, poor guy! Good place, nice vibe, friendly servers, but slower service. Had the shrimp ceviche tostadas and a pina colada, all fresh, well priced and good American sized portions e.g. BIG. Hubby even ordered the tamales for take-out one day and a burrito when dining in. Take advantage of their happy hour drink specials from 4-6 pm daily. Good Mexican is a sparse cusine in YVR - would't be surprised if hubbo takes advantage and goes back for more at Amigo's!

I LOVE AMIGOS!! My husband and I just recently moved here in January and have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant! We went in on Friday night for dinner, loved it so much we went back for happy hour on Saturday! The chips and salsa are amazing and they have a great variety in the menu. We will be again soon!

"Worst Mexican ever"! That is what I wrote on the bottom of my charge slip when I paid over $100 for dinner for 4 that was a total mess. 3 of us ordered Cadillac Margaritas($10/piece) and got a very small glass of weak Margarita. To top it off, the waiter (more on him later) spilled enough of our drinks on his tray I wanted to ask him to let me lick the tray so I get my whole drink. The salsa that was put on the table had no kick to it at all. So the waiter offered to bring us the hot stuff. this was the best part of the meal. It really did have some good heat. We quickly ran out of it, so we asked for more. Our waiter must of forgot because it came after we finished our meals, and it ended up being the mild salsa anyway. Our waiter was a middle aged Caucasian guy. Now I have been to Maui enough to not expect a Hispanic to wait on my in a Mexican restaurant, but this guy was really poor. He did not know his menu. Two of us had to point to the dish we ordered, and he still got one of them wrong. I ordered shrimp a'la diablo - the only dish labeled as spicy. I got another shrimp dish with a bunch of shrimp fresh out of the freezer swimming in a sauce that was so thin it would best be described as a soup. both the rice and beans was soaked in the soup. the only thing edible was the guacamole and sour cream. Out of 4 meals, the best of us said the food was ok. go to Fred's if you want Mexican. It is soooo much better.

Used to love this place. But last two times have been treated terrible. Went there this morning for breakfast asked for a table and the hostess tried to seat us at a booth. Then the waitress came to the table and said "What do you want" I made lite of it and said doing good and how are you today. she stated " we are very busy what do you want. Our previous visit was similar the Hostess sit us at a dirty table and my wife ask the waitress if she could clean our table and the waitress turned got a rag and wiped the table make a smart remark caused it made her mad that my wife ask her to clean our dirty table. Both times when it was time for the check the waitress became very friendly guess she was trying to get a better tip. Too little to late and We always tips 20% not today.

I'm pretty hard on Mexican food being from San Diego that said I understand we are on the south end of an island not known for its tacos. That considered this place is worth a visit. Al pastor chimichanga is good. Came with Guac and sour cream. All things considered this was worth my time. If you ate from anywhere both of LA or South Texas you should be more than happy. They serve brekfast all day fyi.

Their guacamole is kick-ass!! We have a fav Mexican place back home (Vacaville) and this place equals and in some areas beats them!! The service was great and the Peach Margarita was YUMMMMMY! Definitely our first choice for Mexican when on Maui!!!

look its not a 4 star place BUT I AM GIVING IT 4 STARS, only because as far as mexican food goes, you wont find any better on an island 5000 miles from california. and if you arent from california or arizona you wont know its not really really good mexican food. the servers are attractive, the bar and tvs are cool, and drinks are cold. what more do you need in kihei....aaalllloooha!

    (4)

It's pretty hard to mess up Mexican food in my opinion but the food here was just so bland. Chips were stale too. If you want Mexican in Kihei, go somewhere else.

  • Angela B.

The food was not bad and we appreciated that they had a spicier salsa (it's been a challenge to find heat at the Maui restaurants that we'd tried). The staff were all very friendly and refilled our chips and salsa while we waited. This was the most reasonably priced meal we had on our trip and I might have given it 4 stars if it hadn't taken so long to receive our food. We would definitely give this spot another try if we weren't heading out today.

It had been almost a year since I last enjoyed mexican food--Amigo's made it for up in so many ways! The lunch bowl's are fantastic and delicious! They are also very reasonably priced, and fresh! The Micheladas are fresh, cold(!), very well prepared and also reasonably priced. I ate outside to enjoy the sun, so I don't really know about the inside seating. The staff was friendly, prompt, and always checked up on me. I enjoyed Amigo's in Kihei and can not wait to go back!

Two comments. I live One mile from Amigos. I ordered Take out and Beans and Rice were not included. I called them. They did not credit me. I went yesterday. I entered foo take out. Ok. I don't mean to mock all the other reviews on here, but really? "Best , most Authentic Mexican food"? Have you ever had real Mexican food? The beans were out of a can! How hard is it to make real refried beans? The rice was bland. The red sauce was bland. Even their hottest salsa was bland. Taco shells were out of a box! There was very little, if anything at all, "authentic" about it! Come on. Put some effort into it! If you're going to do it, do it right! You owe your customers that much.

We ate here 2 nights ago--I had a hankering for Mexican and found this on Yelp. Pretty much disappointed and would not come back. Service was slow despite lots of wait staff--they kept stopping to chat with each other and startling when you could finally make eye contact--like they would remember, 'oh yeah--I'm supposed to be working.' I had their pork carnitas which were advertised as 'slow-roasted in its own juice'. While there were a few pieces that seemed to be moist and flavorful, 90% of the meat was hard and dry--like it was left over stuff that was thrown in the mix. The tortillas chips were stale and several left an almost-burnt taste in my mouth. While the pico de gallo on the plate was good, the salsa served with the chips was limp and mushy. Very negative experience all the way around.

We ate here the first night on the island and I would say over all it was good. The food was tasty...what you'd expect from Mexican food, the service was good also and the atmosphere was also good! My boyfriend got the torta and said it was bomb I got a chimichanga and it was pretty good...next time I'll go with the torta.

It was quite busy on Sunday night when we went in around 7pm. The ambiance was good and this restaurant is in a great location. The service was good and the tex mex food was average. The portions are big and it's a great value. We ordered the chicken enchilada, chicken quesadilla and the El Pastor chimichanga. The enchilada was average, the quesadilla was soggy but the chimichanga was good. I wouldn't be opposed to returning. Loved the salsa!

I used to go to breakfast here about once a week for a few months. Not sure what happened but 5 or 6 months ago, the kitchen started making errors on our orders - each time we went, either something was incorrectly cooked (ie, rock hard eggs Benedict) or the order was just incorrect (a burrito with no meat shouldn't have bacon and if I ask for green sauce, I do not want red sauce). I figure every kitchen has a bad day, but after half a dozen visits where we had to ask for a new plate for at least one person in our party, we had a doozy of a meal wherein all 4 people's orders were completely wrong and what did show up on our table was grease soaked and/or rock hard. And the server never once apologized or asked to replace the incorrect orders - he asked if we just wanted to eat the food anyway. We gave Amigo's a rest for a few months & tried once more a couple days ago. Verdict: weak drinks, slow service, 2 of 4 of us received incorrect orders and the second time, my friend's order was still wrong. I'd still go back if the servers seemed to care, but they're slow to greet you, slow to check on you & only seem confused when you flag them down to ask for the food you actually ordered.

I come here for happy hour sometimes and I've never actually had any of there meals. We usually get a beer or a margarita, and one of there happy appetizers. It's like a lot of mexican restaurants. Burritos and chimichangas and chips and salsa. Not a huge place and a pretty small bar. 1 or 2 T.V.'s but they have an outside eating area which is alright. Nothing else on this one. It's A-OK.

We were so excited to find such excellent Mexican food while on vacation!! My ground beef taco was PERFECT, cheese enchilada just like my favorite restaurant back home, rice and beans...Mmmmmm!! We liked the milder salsa best from the salsa bar. My margarita was also just right! Friendly fast service too. Thanks Amigos!

Oh yea = the food here is pretty silly.... The drinks are weak - what's up with that? You must know it so at least give me the option to order a double or something - Too Bad Seriously wish I had read the reviews before I went in.... Everything John F. says true. Dang.

This place was great. The service was good. The food was good, and my drink was great. The manager was out talking to all the tables and all the patrons appeared to be having a great time. It seemed like most of the people in the restaurant were locals, and that is always a good sign to me. The chicken fajitas were very good.

Food was a 5 star all the way. It's very authentic and unexpected. Good sized portions that left us full. Service was a 4 star. We were quickly seated and had drink ordered. They were brought and we ordered food. Once our food came, and our server got busy behind the bar. We can't fault him for that, but our drinks say almost empty for a while. After the server was done behind the bar, we received refills. This is a must eat if you want GOOD Mexican food!!!!!

Great place for happy hour. The margaritas are only $5 and quite strong so you get your money's worth. Free chips and salsa is awesome too. Food is ok but slightly over priced for what it is so I only drink here now. Service is very good.

New location does not disappoint !!!!! OK all of you lovers of Mexican food. The (arguably) best Mexican restaurant on Maui has moved (from its former location at 41 E. Lipoa St ste 8-A Kihei, Maui, Hawaii 96752) to its new location at 1215 South Kihei Road (corner location in the Longs shopping plaza). The food is the same (great) but now there is a large sit at bar (probably 10 to 12 seats) and they do have a happy hour (call for details). Daily specials round out this great choice for a meal. They open @ 7:00 am and the breakfast food is simply amazing. We go weekly and get the Machaca (sp?) and my wife always gets the Eggs Benedict. We were told they make the sauce for the Eggs Benedict fresh each day -- and you can taste the difference !!! Honestly, all of the food is awesome. Prices are reasonable. Atmosphere is a nice blend of locals and tourists. Kid friendly. Booths have tables that can be moved (which us big Hawaiians LOVE). If you went to the old location you have to give this new one a try. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy................................

We read the fabulous reviews on Yelp however we must have been there on a bad day. As a group of 10 people we tried many items on the menu however we didn't enjoy our selection. The boys enjoyed one of the beer flavors, it isn't expensive and they couldn't time our meals to arrive at the same time but we didn't really enjoy our experience. Ah well, maybe they were just having a bad day?

Came here end of Jan 2013 The great news is that it is the best Mexican Food on Maui... Overall for Mexican Food was just average. We ate at the new location and the service was so so. We had the Shredded Beef Taquitos and they were the best thing we ate. We also tried Tamale and Cheese Enchilada. The chips were not my favorite but just okay. So if you need to get your Mexican Food fix this place will do the trick until you get home.

GREAT Staff! Loved our waiter, he was so helpfull telling us other places to check out in the area. The food however- needs some help. I just moved here from CA so I guess my Mexican food standards are high... But i thought the food was greasy and not very flavorful. Prob wont be back unless the Chef recreates their menu. Vegetarians- This is a no go.

Okay, as quick Mexican goes, it's okay, but I wouldn't rush here if I were back on Maui. The service is atrocious. Once you walk in you do serve yourself, but if you need anything else you'd better be prepared to go back in the kitchen and get it yourself. I got the tostada plate and it was good. Asked for guacamole and it was a little soggy. Not enough chips. It was cheap food and for the price it wasn't bad. It's a small place so big parties probably wouldn't work here. If you want Mexican and you don't mind that it isn't the best you'll ever have you should try here.

I thought this place was on par with Azteca; my wife says Azteca is better. My drink (house margarita) was good, but too much ice and got watery quick. Hers (strawberry margarita) was gross. Meat was high quality, but flavorless; sauces were dull; and the cheese in the chile relleno was rubbery and tasteless. Service was prompt and friendly, and the little patio is nice. I wanted to like this place, but the food wasn't even consistently mediocre.

Ok food. Pleasant bartender. Not real Mexican but probably as close as you will get in Maui. Skip the Margarita, one of the worst I have had. Made from a very sweet mix.

Great food and service and a tucked away location. Loved the Mexican shrimp cocktail and the tacos were especially good!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
