Yelp 365 Challenge 2015 #70/365 This Pizza Hut location is a really small one. One of those that you just pick up and take home, because there's only one table outside for you to eat it on, if that's what you want to do. The location of this Pizza Hut is pretty prime, in Kea'au Shopping center. If you work in Hilo and live in Pahoa (or vice versa), you can order your pizza when you leave work, and pick it up on the way home. Another perk about their location is that they are right next to Foodland. You can order your pizza, go shopping for groceries, and then come back to get your pizza when you finish shopping. We only interacted with one cashier, and she was nice and polite, knew what she was doing. As far as the pizza goes, we got a few personal pan pizzas, and they were good, typical Pizza Hut pizzas, nothing bad to say about them. This was the first time I'd ever been to this Pizza Hut and I see no problem having to come back here again to order pizza.
First off, the address that Yelp has is wrong. The diner is located right off HI-11 in Mountain View. It doesn't look like much, but the food is excellent. We had the Kamuela Plate (Teri beef, fried noodles and Mac salad) and the fish plate (fried fish, rice and Mac salad). If you want to sample some great local fare on the road between Hilo and Volcano Village, this is a great place to stop. They are open until 9pm.
***update 2013*** someone from McD's contacted me and said they would discuss the temp issue with the managers, so I've bumped my original review up one star as a result of getting that contact. My Original (3 star) review: You locals should be aware, Hawaii McDonalds rock compared to mainland McDonalds. You are apparently the only place in the nation to still have deep-fried "caution filling is hot" pies. Trust me, the baked pies on the mainland suck! I was having a nostalgic craving for a big mac, so I dropped in here after a buddhist lecture down the street. Guess I probably fail at Buddhism, are they vegetarians?? Anyway, after almost getting slammed by a jacked-up 4 wheel drive Toyota driving through the odd McD parking lot at 50 mph, I made it inside and got a good meal (for a McDonalds, "it is what it is"). The Big Mac actually looked like the one in the commercials, it was picture-perfect. Kudos to whoever assembled that, you have a future in the advertising industry in food styling. The Haupia (cococut) pie was an interesting novelty but a little too much drippy white goo and not enough coconut. My main issue with this place was that it was about 40 degrees... the whole place felt like a walk-in freezer. I complained to the kid taking orders and he just shrugged. No way you will want to order ice cream in there! So one star off because I was literally shivering.
Yum, this place is popular with the locals. I'm a local. I love that it doesn't cost very much. I had most every thing on the menu and all of it is really good. My favorite is the roast pork, but tonight I'm going to try the fried noodles. I'll take a pic and tell you how it was.
Cheap, greasy food. Yes. Delicious, yes. Blane's is always great for quick food to fill you up or take to the ocean. Looking for healthy and organic? Keep driving. Looking for great meats with mac and rice? Pull da car over here!
You get what you pay for. Prices aren't too terrible. The atmosphere isn't really there, most take their meals to go I've noticed. We opted to stay in and eat. My boyfriend and I both got the regular chicken katsu plate. He asked for no rice, but instead all mac salad, he can't get enough of that! Also, since they aren't making Korean chicken katsu, you now have to order the regular and ask for Korean sauce on the side (sadly there is never enough sauce...ever!) and that was a 57 cents or 60 cents extra. I did notice that most of the right side of the menu, above the register, was whited out that's a shame, since I've always known them for the huge selection of different types of dishes. We also made sure to let the cashier know we would like to have our complimentary miso soups with our regular plate lunches (don't miss out! It is free after all). The food came quickly and was what you would expect from Blane's. Could be better, but tastes ok, but you'll eat it anyways. We were also cold and tired from fishing at the end of Makuu that day, so the meal was hot and we were hungry. So, if you're looking for a big portion at a relatively decent price there head to Blane's! There is still a big selection waiting!
