This might be mine and my husband's favorite meal on the island so far. We ordered the Portuguese shredded pork loco moco which was OMG and the tropical pancakes w/ coconut syrup. The food was so delicious and our service was very good and we liked the cozy feel of the restaurant. We got there around 8am and it was getting full, but not totally crowded yet. Our waitress was super patient and helpful as we tried to decide what to order. Our food came out pretty quickly and we can't wait to eat here again. The only thing about our breakfast that was mediocre was our coffee, but everything else delicious!

Home style family restaurant. Down home food, friendly staff, good service. Rosa makes you feel at home. Good Kauai experience.

All the food we had was hearty and oh so ono. Everyone in our group loved their dishes. We went there twice and I got the fish plate with ono, mac salad, and rice and then the second time I got the Captain's platter with ono, two eggs, rice, and toast. Both times were super duper yummy and my husband and friends loved the halo halo. (I don't eat too much dairy-- one of the Asian curses.) If you are staying in or around Kapa'a, do not miss the food at the restaurant and save room for dessert after!

This is the place to go to for breakfast while in Kauai. You'll have to return more than once due to the large and interesting menu. It is a locals place, which means nothing fancy about the decor. However if you want to experience the local Hawaiian fare such as Moco Loco, Spam and eggs over fried rice, linguisa or pancakes then this is your place. Unpretentious, friendly staff, generous portions and all around great experience.

The best. Totally cute pineal decor and perfect for our first island meal. Had magi magi Benedict and coconut pancakes. Yum!!!

Breakfast was ok, nothing super exceptional. Had the macadamia nut pancakes, they were average. Reasonably priced. I would return.

On main road with three tables for outside dining. No wait and definitely no "wow" food factor but it's good. 9/27/12

Awesome breakfast! The place was packed with a mix of tourists and locals on a Saturday morning. We all had some French toast with bacon and eggs and walked away feeling satisfied. We'd definitely do it again. Only down side was we didn't realize we needed to sign-in when we arrived. Their sign said "wait to be seated" and so we waited. We got passed up initially because we didn't sign-in and were failed to be acknowledged. Like I said the place is busy and they get plenty of business from locals, so you'll need to adapt if you're not from here. Eat the breakfast. Haven't tried the lunch so I can't comment on that.

Great food! If you go earlier, you miss the morning rush. Went from 7-8:30 and never had to wait for a table :) trop pancakes were yum. Try the coconut syrup at least once!

They have the Best Shaved ice. The POG( passion fruit, orange and guava flavor ) was soo good with vanilla ice cream in the middle and condensed milk on top. The halo halo shave was tasty

I absolutely loved this restaurant for breakfast. I loved my veggie omelette and coffee. My husband loved his meal as well. He ordered eggs, toast and mahi mahi. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We came here for breakfast before we went on our Hanalei excursion that day. We got a few recommendations from the locals so we thought we'd try it out. Those are really the best resources (besides Yelp ;p) to get some good grinds. We pretty much opened up the place so it was a bit lonely for a while but it filled up quick. Lots of locals. Good sign. The coffee was delicious. Nothing beats a mug of Kauai coffee. We each ordered different items so that we could try each others food. I had the Loco Moco, the wife had the Local Boy, mom had the omelette. The Loco was good. Not #1 on my Kauai Loco Moco list but it was top 3 for sure. The Local Boy was good and the omelette was tasty. I am being very vague because nothing compared to the 'Impulse-Buy', 'Last Minute Decision', 'Don't Know What I Was Thinking' order of Macadamia Nut Pancakes with Coconut Syrup that we decided to share. Ho Yeah! Good decision. Those pancakes are seriously some dangerous goods. I'm all about subtle flavors that are layered and deep. The batter is excellent and very fluffy. The macadamia flavor was light but very present. The very subtle coconut syrup was not too sweet and didn't overpower the macadamia at all. Together? Mouth broke. Really, it was a perfect match with the coffee. Now I know how to order for next time. The service was good. Their menu was diverse enough to make every stomach happy. I look forward to more visits in the near future and trying more items. (on top of pancakes)

On our last day of Kauai, we decided to finally hit up brunch but a lot of places we wanted to try were closed (on Memorial Monday, understandable). Thankfully, Ono Family was open! Not too bad for a wait for 2. Got the ahi benedict and the local girl (fried rice omlette). Everything was great tasting, but I was hoping for another layer on the benedict. The other benedicts listed on the menu had tomato, spinach AND mushrooms! The ahi benedict was literally the ahi, egg and muffin with sauce. Otherwise, tasted great, but wouldn't order it again. Relatively good prices, good eats.

This place had good diner style breakfast, which always means it will be tasty if its diner. They were packed when we went at around 7:30am....packed with elders. Their interior decorator must have taken a lunch break....A 30 year lunch break. BUT the style fits perfect with the care-free and slow moving style of Kauai. It kind of makes you feel like your in old hawaii...or a time when social media meant actually talking to your friends face or calling them up on the landline, not tweeting, fbing or yelping, updating or checking-in. They do have some nice paintings up on the walls though! Our waiter was a little pushy. She didn't really want to give us much time to look at the menu. When I went to order my pancakes, I was distracted by something and forgot to say "shortstack" but instead just said "2 banana/coconut pancakes". She then corrected me with a brash reaction and said "they're called shortstacks, thats what you say here when you want just 2 pancakes" ...Does it make a difference lady?? It would have turned into a great convo if I said, "Actually, its called a lousy tip. Thats what we give here when you're rude to your customers." I got 2 pancakes--so moist and warm! It had sliced bananas and coconut flakes on top with a huge dallop of whipped cream. They give you steaming coconut syrup for your pancakes, which is delish. Bf got spam, eggs over-easy and brown fried rice. He was oh-so kind to give me a bite of his entire meal, but after I took that bite, I knew why...because it was sooo good and savory. I'll let him slide this time. Someday he'll realize his 10 pound gf can have the appetite of a football player, and give me more than a fair share of his sampling. Because sharing is important, right? ;)

You know a place is good when you take a picture of your breakfast at a restaurant and show it to people along side your amazing snorkeling, hiking, etc. pictures from the island. "Rebecca why is there a picture of a corned beef hash and eggs here"? My only regret regarding this restaurant is that we did not find it till two days before we were leaving. Our coffee was never less than 1/3rd empty when a cute little lady would fill it up for us. The papaya was like heaven and the jam was like crack. I have no idea how they make it but I literally heard people (mostly women) both mornings I was there, scheming on how many they could take in their luggage and how long it would last travel wise. Do yourself a favor and get the corned beef hash with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, so good I guarantee a little sigh will escape your lips at some point.

  • Crystal B.

This place looks like it breaks so many health codes. Dusty decor, dying flowers in vases, a greasy substance floating at the top of my water cup... The loco moco was tasty, but it required a blind eye turned to the skin that formed on the top layer of my gravy and the fact that my toast was more stale than toasty. Service was meh. I wouldn't come back.

  • Eek A.

Was expecting a lot more from this place for the 4 stars. The food was really not that great, but the hostess was VERY RUDE, not only to me, but to everyone who came in. Just complete anger for some unknown reason. I will not be going back.

  • Stephen S.

After touching down in Hawaii and dropping my luggage off at my hotel I quickly knew I had to get some shave ice so I asked the concierge for the recommendation for the best shave ice around. She pointed us to Ono Family Restaurant which seemed apt as there was quite a line when we rolled up. The shave ice was entirely disappointing.

  • Kelly S.

Best breakfast we had on island. Tasty not too greasy and a very laid back atmosphere. Make sure you hit this spot up! We did twice!

  • M M.

This place was bad even by hawaiian standards. The burger was overcooked, the salad was unimaginative, and the fish sandwich was something even the military would be ashamed to call "food" - my companion who ordered it called it "petrified dinosaur" and only when I took a bite myself did I discover he was being generous. The service was, as other diners have noted, pretty awful. But they do a high volume of business and as it turns out it is mostly a diner so ... I've seen cranky people (usually overworked women) serving at every diner I've ever been to. On the bright side, the fruit juices were ok. Maybe it's better at breakfast. Or maybe we just happened to order 3 bad things from the menu. Either way, we won't be back. The market down the street is cheaper and looks better.

I was visiting ohana, and got to be there for a 4-yr's birthday. The two of us went for breakfast, and I was greatly appreciative of the staff's patience with us. This 4-yr old was having a great time playing with the ice in a dish they brought while Auntie ate. :-) Mahalo!

Good food and service. You actually pay at the register here so don't get frustrated and wait. The food was yummy and the service was quick. It is popular for good reason.

  • Guy C.

The breakfast was good, the prices are fair, the atmosphere is pleasant.... But what stuck out to me? My servers. Why? Because they had the perfect "Good Cop/Bad Cop" routine going so well, I began to suspect that they may have rehearsed it. One lady was very friendly, talkative, and always approached me with a smile. The other lady never spoke to me, never made eye contact, just grabbed/delivered a plate and was gone. She wasn't unfriendly or did any damage to the dining experience, but warm and personable? Not so much. This actually became a great source of entertainment to me, trying to speculate which server would appear at my table next, so much so, that I took bets with myself in trying to predict which server would appear at my table next. For the decent pricing, I totally feel that this seemingly unintentional "Dinner and a show" experience was well worth it. The eggs were also mighty tasty.

Was recommended by the concierge at the hotel to come here for a hearty local breakfast. It's a mom and pop shop on the main road. Easy to find, easy to park. 5 stars for the fried rice here. I have never in my life has fried rice as good as it was here. The breakfasts are on the greasy side but they are filling and the prices reasonable. I really wanted to come here another time because it was so delicious, but we didn't have enough time on our trip.

  • Jeri H.

Don't believe all the great reviews. I'm not saying the place is bad, but maybe they were having an "off" morning being a Monday and all. Anyway, the pancakes were good but my husbands meal left a lot to be said- no sides other than a piece of papaya. No hash browns or toast. The eggs were watery and the tortillas that came with it were soggy from sitting in the wet eggs. Mediocre food for too much money. Not so Ono.

    (2)
  • Happy S.

Our meal was far below my expectations based on the other Yelp reviews. I ordered the special of the day that was supposed to be a scramble with tomatillo sauce, avocados and cheese. Sadly it was more like tomatillo soup and not much else. My husband's hash omelette was average at best. There are much better places to eat in Kauai.

  • Angela S.

Really good, worth the wait (although I only waited maybe 10 min). I loaded up on eggs, hash browns and Portuguese sausage. By the way, they gotta start making their jam in 3 oz jars so we can bring it home!! btw, I read another review that said their smoothie was warm. We ordered one too and it was barely cold. I think they pre-make them because it came out a minute after we ordered it, but it was still good. But you will want to ask for a cup of ice if you want it very cold. Service is iffy, but they are running around trying to serve everyone so be understanding!

    (5)
  • Kayan H.

Came here for breakfast. Pretty standard pancakes, portuguese sausage, and scrambled eggs weren't really scrambled, just cooked and thrown as a lump on the plate. Not bad, not great.

    (2)
  • Sarah N.

Friendly but s-l-o-w service. I ordered a Kona Mocha and was served a hot chocolate. When I notified the waitress, I told her I was happy to drink the hot cocoa (just didn't want to be charged for the wrong thing). She brought me the correct drink anyway, which I appreciated. The food was good. We ordered the Lindsey Special with spam (fried rice, spam, and eggs) and the Loco Moco (hamburger patty, rice, and eggs with toast). Avoid sitting outside. The highway is loud and there are lots of pesky flies. All in all, an okay place to grab a meal on the Eastside of Kauai.

Excellent breakfast food!! The best tropical stack we have tasted yet. The food was fresh, delicious & hot. Great service. Ono, Ono for sure!!

  • Mike G.

Not a bad place to plant yourself for breakfast, but expect to wait as the servers are on Hawaiian time. At first glance the customers were a mix of locals and tourists so I said why not, if the locals are here it usually is a good place to eat. After all I'm sure they tried just about every restaurant on the island. I had the hash benedicts and it was excellent! My wife had the loco moco and she and I both agreed we have had better. I overheard the couple across from us (yes, I was ear hustling) tell their server they at breakfast here everyday of their stay and loved it. I suppose it is a hit or miss on what you order.

  • Tony L.

"Excuse me, can you tell me where the restroom is?" I just finished breakfast, and had to go pretty bad. "Outside," she says with a grumpy, but otherwise blank stare. I go outside, circle the entire restaurant, and find nothing. I'm starting to dance a little. I go back in and ask another waitress, who says, "Oh! You'll probably need the key!" That pretty much sums up my experience -- not meeting expectations. The local boy (eggs, sausage, kim chi), was pretty much what I expected, but the tropical waffles (bananas, pineapples, coconut syrup) was a bit of a big and soggy mess. Maybe it was what we ordered. Maybe the chef was having an off day. Whatever it was, it just wasn't worth it. And the bathroom? Last door on the left.

  • Mark A.

This is just a review of the shave ice, which has its own service window on the side of the restaurant. Naturally with a sign that says it's the best shave ice. The ice was shaved very coarsely as compared to better places where it's more like compacted snow. They give you a huge amount of ice. They had a good selection of flavors, and they weren't stingy with them. I tried the Halo Halo, which was good, but would have been better with better shaving of the ice. The Ube ice cream was good with a very interesting flavor, and again they weren't stingy with the evaporated milk. I had much better shave ice at Shave Ice Paradise in Hanalei (my favorite), and JoJo's in Waimea.

Best Acai bowl (Tambor) in town. We went here 4 days in a row

Great Shave Ice and Ice Cream. Better than the North Shores on Oahu!

  • Katy C.

I love this place! Ate here 20+ years ago and its just the same as I remembered!! Nothing is better then hot buttered pancakes with hot coconut syrup oozing down over the sides! Kid friendly, casual, fun!! Shave ice next door has great prices and flavors!!

    (5)
  • B C.

Fast friendly service + hearty breakfast fare + good prices = GREAT breakfast spot! We ordered the tropical pancakes, regular pancakes, and a side order of fried rice. This was before we realized how big the portions were! Pancakes were great... fluffy and came with perfectly warmed syrup (love the coconut!!!). Fried rice was ok (a bit dry) but maybe it was because we were way too full to eat it and have to warm it up later for leftovers. Didn't get to try lunch but would definitely recommend for breakfast!

  • Jackie K.

Service was slow but I don't mind that when I am on vacation. Friend rice is the best side, really nice flavor--don't get the hash browns. It was out last day on Kauai so we ordered three meals. 1. Kimchi Fried Rice Omeltte--called the Local Girl: Amazing, great flavor, interesting and different for breakfast. 2. French toast: not as good as Hanalei Wake up Cafe, but solid. 3. Brocolli Omelette with cheese: tasty. Worth the drive up here instead of Eggberts which is down the street. I would go back!

    Outstanding Hawaiian breakfast! And affordable!

  • Sarah K.

Oh my goodness, Ono. We ended up coming here I think three times total we had such a great first experience. Very friendly local restaurant with great food selection and surprisingly very veg friendly! I got the steamed veggies and fruit cup. This was no dinky IHOP fruit cup- fresh sunrise papaya, sliced bananas, pineapple and maybe mangos? So yummy. Veggies were great too. They do pre-butter your toast so if you don't do dairy, make sure you let them know. Hubby got a special with avocado and the avocado looked very fresh, creamy, and local. He loved his food too. Really great and super friendly. They do look like they get busy around 8/9 am (they open at 7am and we were there right at open mostly) You can't go wrong here!

  • Aaron K.

Stopped here primarily because of the 4 star yelp review. Wasn't terrible but all in all seemed pretty average. Had better breakfasts elsewhere on the island.

We discovered this quirky little place when we were searching for the Kountry Kitchen (another good breakfast spot!) in Kapaa and we didn't go far enough north on the highway. I'm glad we stumbled upon this unique restaurant for breakfast. The decor is pretty basic, but it's quite charming at the same time. We were traveling with our 15-month-old son and the server was really helpful with getting him comfortable and entertaining him when she walked by. She was really fast and efficient. None of our coffee cups or water glasses reached empty. I ordered a tomatillo omelet (complete with avocado) and I was blown away. My wife tried it as well and she was upset that she didn't order that instead (but she liked her omelet, too). The hash browns were just about perfect. My son scarfed down the fresh fruit bowl and I snuck out a piece of papaya before he finished it -- it was some of the best papaya fruit I'd ever tried. On top of the great food and service, the prices were totally reasonable.

Excellent bacon cheese BBQ burgers grilled to perfection. Fast, friendly service. Large portions so share with a friend, or save half for later. It's all good. I loved the surprise of two large homemade onion rings on the side. The meal was so reasonably priced for the amount you get also. If you want that homemade taste, Ono's is the place to go.

  • Dan B.

My best friend and I arrived on Kauai for our good friends' wedding a day before the other guests. Our first morning we woke up very early thanks to the time difference, and needed to fill our stomachs before hitting the beach. I logged onto Yelp and the reviews for Ono sounded good (and it was one of the few places we could tell were open at 7am) so we hopped in our rented convertible and drove the mile from our hotel to the restaurant. It's no place fancy but the staff were very friendly, the coffee was amazing and the food very good. I tried the 'Local Boy' omelette which has kim chee, cheese and Portuguese sausage - awesome. She had the broccoli and cheese one which was also very good. My one mistake was getting the hash browns as her fried rice was MUCH tastier. There were a lot of other items on the menu that tempted me which may mean another visit during the course of our trip!

  • Bill B.

We found this on on Yelp. I think that the ratings are a bit inflated. We got there on a Sunday morning and got seated fast enough. However, we had to ask three times for coffee, so service is not so great. I ordered the corned beef hash omelet and my wife ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. Big mistake...the hash was from a can. Really...a highly rated restaurant serving CANNED corned beef hash? We won't be back...we'll go back to the Kountry Kitchen...just a little ways down the road...instead.

  • Doreen Y.

By far the best breakfast on the island! I had the scrambled eggs, ham, toast and hash browns. And the Kona Mocha was to die for. We ate here twice and would have come here more times but we ran out of time. I will definitely come back if we visit Kauai in the future! You might have to wait before getting a table but it is more than worth the wait. Did I mention the Kona Mocha!

    (5)
  • Chris J.

The food was mediocre but wasn't horrible. My biggest complaint would be that the place is very small so for bigger parties (we were a part of 6) you are packed in like a sardine in a can.

    (3)
  • Patrick K.

Discovered this place via yelp on our first day and became a daily start while on vacation. We'd only stopped by for breakfast during our stay. Strawberry french toast, macadamia nut waffles with coconut syrup. Remember: you're on island time.

  • Tricia C.

I was also recommended this place as one of the places "the locals go" by the rental car lady. It was our first meal in Kauai (dinner around 8pm on a Tuesday) and there was nooooo one there. I think maybe one more tourist couple came in at some point while we were there. But, they were playing Bon Jovi when I walked in (slow ballady Jon Bon) so I knew I would like the place. I ordered a la carte breakfast items because that's what i was in the mood for (toast, eggs, and ham steak) but my husband had more traditional foods (a beef and rice dish, kalua pork, etc). I wish I could remember what it was called but unfortunately I do not. The funny thing is while we were here, we though the food was pretty dece but nothing spectacular. But during the week of our stay, we kept finding ourselves saying "we should go back to the Ono, that was good!" Especially since I REALLY regretted not getting the pancakes!! Unfortunately we never had time, but I highly recommend it to anyone staying in the area!

OMFG!!! If you are a breakfast person THIS IS IT! The (ever so slight) downs...if you are a diva snot just go somewhere else. There is no AC and it can be a little muggy inside. It is an older building with shutters and some floor fans. It has not been updated in a long time and has vinyl tablecloths stapled to the tables. You have to sign yourself into the wait list sheet when you walk in. The good is really good. It has a very local feel and there were lots of locals out with their kids in there eating. The menu is unique, local and delicious. They kept our coffee topped off (my tell tale at a diner). There were plenty of standard options for breakfast. It was the local flare that got my heart all a flutter. All the non-pancake items come with your choice of hashbrowns, rice or fried rice! Your meat options included portugese or sweet chinese sausage. Many of the egg dishes included kim chi! My hubby got a Scratch Chili Omelet and I got a Local Boy which was Portuguese sausage, kim chi, and cheese and opted for the fried rice. We were both really, really happy. Unusual breakfast is hard to find. Kids each got pancakes with fresh strawberries and were also very happy. For all four of us including 2 coffees and 2 cranberry juices it was $36. Best meal and deal we had on Kauai. We were so full all we needed was a light snack for lunch.

  • Ryan M.

Went here with my rents while my mom was shopping in Kapaa. Nice family style restaurant. Nothing against the place and very affordable but I'm still not used to the local style waitressing. Would've gotten 5 stars but didn't like having to wait 15 minutes before someone came by to take our order. Will definitely go again and they have shaved ice right outside. How can you not like it?

  • Olga V.

Wonderful food! Very slow service. That sums up most of our experience. My husband and I went there twice while on our honeymoon. Absolutely loved the food. I got the coconut, macadamia, and banana pancakes and loved every moment of them. However, the server spent most of the time on his cell phone, and only came around to refill our waters. We enjoyed the food and atmosphere enough that we would go back again in a heartbeat.

Whuk? A "Family" restaurant that actually treats you like... family?! Heading to Hanalei from the airport and feeling a bit peckish? We were. Wanting to get right into the swing of things, we stopped at this local Yelp! legend and ordered a late lunch from a staff that must have the patience of Job! Props in particular to our server Dawn, who, at the very end of a long shift, still took the time to greet what must have seemed to be yet another group of hapless white tourists from the mainland. A life-long resident of Kauai and Mother of four... five?! ...she was welcoming and kind beyond what I think I would have been able to muster in her shoes. After the food was ordered and we got to chatting, far from indifferent, Dawn freely gave of her unique knowledge and was genuinely concerned about seeing to it we had a good time while on the island. Sadly, one does not need look too far to see all too many examples of service that reflects the contrary and such laudable behavior is appreciated. The food is authentically local and, if you're hot, they will happily let you bring in one of their amazing shave ice treats from the serving window out front. As you fellow Yelpers might agree, often times the service overwhelms the content. Such was the case here as what I ate was good but not as memorable as my interaction with the staff. See the other reviews for specifics on the chow, but for the experience, Ono Family Restaurant is a great place to start a visit in paradise!

Large menu with a variety of options. French toast was delish and appropriately priced. I would go back!

  • Erin M.

Good place for local food. You feel like you are in your auntie's kitchen with choices like loco moco, eggs over easy on rice, and traditional french toast. The food is good and the service is good enough. However, for local-style food, I would prefer to go to Kountry Kitchen down the street.

  • Sammy Z.

Do NOT attempt going here. The "fresh fish dinner" was frozen Mahi Mahi. Frozen!!! The waitress warned us of this. Then the fish sandwich was frozen Alaskan cod! WHAT? Ok, the mixed veggies, were straight from cans. The mushrooms had the canned flavor, which were disgusting. This is not home cooking by any means.

    (1)
  • Jamie C.

At least this is the real thing, run by Hawaiian locals. Very colorful, home cooked beats most on this island. eggs. omelets and spam great, coffee disappointing, fried rice not much thought given to it.

Little to add to the other four and five star reviews here. A truly local place. In fact it was chock full of locals this morning. Service started a little slow but was ultimately just fine. Definitely recommended for a good breakfast.

  • Larry D.

Lived here 12 years and ate here twice. First time about 10 years ago for breakfast, nothing special then. Vaguely remember place was for sale a few years ago so will try again. Second time (and last) yesterday 7/30/12 for lunch. First was the smell of old grease or sewer problem walking in front door by the shave ice stand. Seated right away in booth by kitchen door. Thought about eating at one of tables just outside next to sidewalk but all 3 tables there empty and looked like black mold growing on the wood. Got water right away but waited for 20 minutes to order. Normally I would get up and leave by then but am trying to mellow some with age and maybe the waitress is having a bad day. So I watched one waitress walk by us numerous times and not say anything and watched her also touch the back of the booth every time she went by to help her get around the corner to the kitchen. That part of the booth was covered in black dirt from the thousands of times she has done that and then she was the one that finally brings my salad instead of the waitress that took our order. I could not eat the small bowl of salad (only lettuce) as I imagined her dirty hand from the booth filling the small bowl. Finally got our food 45 minutes after we had sat down. I had the Ono fish plate. Fish was cold, rice was cold, very few veggies. No waitress ever came back to check how the meal was. I had to ask the owner (I think because she was running register) for more water as she walked by. She brought the bill and could see I did not eat the salad and only about half of the fish and rice but she never asked how it was. A couple of minutes later we got up to leave and she was in a hurry to meet me at the register to pay but even then she did not ask how was the meal. The place is dirty, wait staff is terrible, the food for lunch might be edible if it was served warm, if that was the owner she needs to make some big changes.

Great place for a nice breakfast. We stopped in on our way from Princeville to catch our flight home. We wanted one last breakfast with some Hawaiian flair and we were not disappointed. The Portuguese sausage was as tasty as ever and cooked just right. Most of the menu looks good, but I definitely suggest getting something that comes with the Coconut Syrup on it. Really good. Good coffee and fast friendly service

Coconut syrup is substantially more flavorful at Kountry Kitchen. Ono's version is too subtle and more sweet and the flavor was lost when applied to the french toast. The french toast itself was well executed and nicely soaked rather than kissed with egg wash. The Portuguese sausage were thick medallions of sausage and is one of the better tasting Portuguese sausages that I've ever had. I wonder what brandy Ono buys...? The sausage complimented the fried rice which had bits of bacon. My friend and I requested eggs over medium but they were barely runny. This is an item I thought that Ono would have had down to perfection given all the eggs they must serve. Don't sit outside otherwise you'll be mobbed with flies. You can only take so much of watching the swarm sully your food and drinking glasses before you punt on finishing the meal. Service was just ok, very slow actually.

pretty simple breakfasts but good. the party I came with really liked it, ut I thought it was ok especially for the price as it was a bit expensive for what it was for me. I suppose it was a family restaurant afterall.

Absolutely the BEST breakfast on island! We drove down to Kapa'a twice from the North shore just for breakfast. YES, it's really that good. They have an entire page of omelets. The mushroom & spinach is my favorite, hubby's favorite is ANYTHING with corned beef hash - The Farmers Omelet fits the bill. You must try their fried rice too, a little different than what you might think and great as a side. Tropical Pancakes with coconut, bananas and mac nuts to die for. One thing that really sets this place apart is the syrup. They serve both maple and coconut syrup HOT!

My family and I decided to go here per my fellow YELPERS! This place reminded me a lot of your local home town greasy spoon. Family owned, simple atmosphere, good food, nice size portions and a place that didn't break the bank. My son and I both had the Ono #1, simple and great. Their fresh fruit cup is plentiful and the papaya is oh, so yummy! Each dish came with a side of their homemade jam (Pineapple-Papaya), which was heavily. Would go back, next time we're in Kauai.

Ono Family was right next door to the resort we were staying at. Good home cooked meals. Lots of variety! Great for breakfast and you can get a little bit Hawaiian and little bit of homey goodness. We ate here twice during our week's stay and had great food and great service both times. We only wish we tried the shave ice! DUH!

  • Christopher R.

It was solid but the portions seemed small for the price. I got the ahi breakfast burrito. The coffee was weak like most places. It was good but not amazing. The service seemed slow. I still recommend it but I like a couple other places better.

The boyfriend demanded gravy and rice the second we got off the plane, so on our way to Princeville, I Yelp'd different Hawaiian restaurants, and we stumbled upon the Ono Family Restaurant. It was like being at my tita's house! The restaurant itself was really home-y and reminded me of the Philippines. With that said, it is very charming, worn in, but it was also a little humid inside because there was a lack of air conditioning. It wasn't that awful though, since Kauai weather is mild enough, but princesses, beware. This might not be the experience you want. (There was one sunburned family wearing cheesy Hawaiian shirts sitting nearby us who looked absolutely miserable, and I couldn't help but grin.) The food was amazing! Great and delicious comfort food. We ended up going out of our way to come here every other day during our trip, because we loved it that much. After we finished our meal, we went outside and noticed the BEST shaved ice stand in all of Kauai. They give you incredibly large portions (especially in comparison to Princeville and Hanalei!). Get the sno cap!

After having breakfast yesterday down the street at Kountry Kitchen, we were very happy to have found this place. The inside is much more "Hawaiian," as well as the service, and food!! I love a breakfast menu that is 3 pages, has my favorites, as well as local specialties. I had the AMC - avocado, mushroom, & cheese - omelet. Try fried rice instead of hash-browns..... yummy!!!!!! Service is slowish (welcome to Hawaii), the coffee is cheap (so is the cost of breakfast), and the interior is old (don't you want that in a breakfast place?). Don't go to the Kountry Kitchen (where the food is super greasy), come here where the food is fresh, local, and made with Hawaiian flair (instead of 1990's trends).

    (5)
  • Sara L.

Lovely place with a lot of local favorites. We came here twice on our vacation. The omelets are so good! Hawaiians have the best/most creative food - Never would have thought of putting kimchee in an omelet! The portions are big and the prices are reasonable. Come here early though, because it gets crowded.

Good food - lousy service. As compared to other local breakfast joints, this one serves decent breakfast, at least omelets are OK. Now, the service could be slow and unpredictable.

In search of a local's breakfast, we stopped at Ono Family Restaurant. The inside looks like it hasn't changed since the 1960s.. and so does the staff. I ordered the loco moco and regretted it as soon as it was placed down in front of me. My husband's egg dish was average but lacking flavour. Service was grumpy, had to chase them down to pay our bill and get out of there. Maybe lunch and dinner are better, but I would skip the loco moco.

If you're staying on the east side of Kaua'i and are looking for some down home cooking, this is the place. Had breakfast there yesterday. Excellent! I had the #2, eggs, choice of meat (I had Spam, natch!), potatoes or rice or fried rice and toast. Very good. My girlfriend had the Loco Moco, again, excellent! Nice mix of visitors and locals. Funky, homey decor. Good prices, friendly efficient service. They're actually glad to have your business! Island style at it's best!

  • Alex W.

Excellent breakfast! I had the Portuguese Pork Loco Moco over fried rice and it was the best meal I've had since arriving on Kauai. Their homemade pineapple/papaya jam is delicious. We also ordered a tropical fruit pancake to share and not only was that fantastic but the homemade coconut syrup was great. Staff was pleasant and we had a good time during our visit. I highly recommend Ono Family Restaurant!!

  • Mike W.

3 meals and counting, specific recommendations....the whole menu, near as I can tell. Other joints are good, but you might regret breakfasting anyplace else after you discover OFR. Loco Moco...omelettes....pancakes...wahoo benedict....all prepared/seasoned perfectly, with generous portions.

This is a great place for a "local" breakfast near Lihue. We went here twice during our week stay at the Kauai Marriott. You know its local food when they have FRIED RICE with breakfast. What Asian doesn't like fried rice with their breakfast? If you don't want fried they have hash browns or toast. The fried rice is awesome. It has bacon in it, just like my mom would do! First time we went there, we both had the pork chop and egg. Pork chops were good. They used a pork loin so it was a little lean. Hash browns were also good. Second time we went there, I had the Lindsey special which comes with a good portion of fried rice topped with eggs and choice of meat. I picked spam. Again, just like mom used to make it. Order your eggs over easy or medium and let the yolk soak into your fried rice. Yum! Service is hit or miss depends on how busy it is. But its Kauai, relax a little bit.

This review applies to LUNCH. Short version: Sounds like it's good for breakfast, but keep driving for lunch. Its been 45 minutes and we've seen our server once at our table. She's around, just not helping us. The 30 minutes we waited before we were able to order was highlighted by the other ladies who work here peaking at us with our closed menus and ignoring us. This was even more annoying given that our waitress only came to our table after another table was seated and she promptly took their order...starting to wonder as we pass another 15 minutes since ordering, why didn't we leave 30 mins ago and how long can it take to make a burger? We did stick around, and our burgers came. Greasy and lacking flavor (not sure how you do that).

I went there with my wife for breakfast on a weekday. We had the Club Breakfast and my wife had an eggs hash (a bit on the salty side). I must give a plus to the coconut syrup that they serve at Ono. It is much lighter than the usual syrup at other restaurants. The hash browns they serve were great and the corned beef hash was also flavorful. Overall, our breakfast tasted good. The prices of the food was also reasonable for Kapaa. The service was pretty good and the waitresses were helpful. I would recommend this place to my friends.

Very interesting restaurant. Small home town feel. Their specials are pretty unique we have found on Kauai so far. Fresh fish either on a Benedict, in an omelet, or in a burrito also today they had strawberry french toast and pancakes. We had the fresh ahi benedict and some brown fried rice concoction with spam and an over easy egg. Those were both delicious. If you live here or are visiting, this is one of the places to go for breakfast.

Great vibes, friendly service, and good breakfast. dropped in here at 8am on a sunday and were seated right away. ordered food within 3 minutes and served within 10. the place was just about full but the waitresses and bus boy were working hard, but with a smile. I peeked in the kitchen to see a sweet Grandmother-like figure cooking up orders...this is what ties it all together. I ordered the "local boy" (omelette with cheese, kimchi (not spicy), and sausage) with fried rice (bacon and onions..different, but great) - asking for acid reflux, but I did it. She ordered the Ono #2 - eggs, bacon, hash browns. All full plates and delicious. Her bacon was not shriveled and tiny like chain diners. Breakfast came out to be $20 flat with tax. We were in and out real quick and real full. A must do for the vibes and food. Additional review for Ono Shave Ice: Got this the same day, but later...after beaching it and buying our dinner produce at the Farmer's market just north of Kapa'a. - The Farmer's market offers some good produce. The local sweet ginger is nothing like i've ever had, the eggplant is sweet, the string beans are like candy, and the papayas are ridiculously good. Try the "ice cream" bananas...yes...you read it correctly. The Ono Shave ice is made with syrups, and there is a place to get real fruit in town...but for $3...a shave ice (choose up to 4 flavors at no additional cost) the size of your head is pretty refreshing on a warm day. perfect for 2 or just one cracked out sweet tooth. They have more flavors than there are real fruit....just kidding.

For two vegetarians, this was one of the few options available to us. The service was slow and sparse, but good when it was there. The food was average. The atmosphere is sort of strange - it feels a little bit like you're in someone's slightly tacky but cozy living room. I guess that's why it's called Ono FAMILY restaurant. Go with the specials. They are well worth it.

Man this place was awesome. It was our last day on the island, Christmas day, actually and I am sooooo glad we came by for breakfast. It was busy, we waited about 10 minutes to get seated but man was it worth the wait. I got the Farmer's omelette (corned beef hash omelette with cheese and onions) and I got it with fried rice - FREAKING AWESOME!!! It came with a side of hollandaise sauce, which was totally unnecessary because the food by itself was outstanding as it was. The little lady got the Local Boy omelette, which had Portuguese sausage and kim chee, and that was awesome as well. I will definitely come back here the next time I'm on the island! One thing of note though, there were tons of flies lurking around the tables on the patio, so if you have a problem with that, I'd advise sitting inside.

We had breakfast here June 8 (I think). Big menu selection, unusual combos and Ono Family specials. You gotta try the Papya Pineapple jam. LocoMoco is a locals favorite, so you know locals come here. I had fried rice in place of hash browns with eggs; it was good. We always see a crowd waiting to get in whenever we drive thru. They are BUSY !! It's just a little dive joint but try it - you might be happily surprised.

Great food! We had: Steak and eggs - The medium rare is more like a medium, so it there was no red at all. So keep that in mind when you specify how you want your steak prepared. Lindsey special - yummy fried rice, and who can day no to spam, especially in hawaii! (Instead of getting spam, you can get other stuff like, chinese sausage. I was so surprised to see that on the menu!!!) Tropical short - My fiance says that these are the best pancakes he's ever had. It has macadamia nuts, bananas and coconut flakes. The coconut syrup is great too since it's not unbearably sweet. It takes a little while to actually get your food, but it's worth the wait.

  • Chad F.

If you can get in the door, write your name on the clipboard with the number in your party then sit outside to enjoy the ocean air while you wait. We had the banana pancakes and tropical pancakes...both delicious! You have to have the coconut syrup. The bacon was crispy and the hashbrowns were okay. But it is casual and with a local scene so take in the Hawaiian ambience! I would recommend breakfast and there is a great selection for all tastes!

During my 5 day stay in Kauai, I went here 3 times to get shave ice. You get a huge mound of feathery ice, with a ton of choices in sugary flavoring, vanilla topping, and ice cream for a really fair price [I think it was $4.00]. YUMMY! I'm coming here again the next time i go back to Kauai!

Service was not that great, I know everyone says it's Hawaii everything is slow, but for a waitress to walk by 6 times and not acknowledge you or even take a drink order, well it's just rude. There are places on the island that I id experience good service even when it was busy. There was an older Asian woman and a younger Asian woman. We were helped by both of them at some point. It's just very slow here. Usually if the food is great I am forgiving, but it was nothing special. I got the sandwich/soup/mac salad combo. The soup was bland compare to other Portuguese bean soup I've had. The sandwich had hard toasted bread. The mac salad was a good decent Hawaiian mac salad. If this was the only place open to eat I might drop in and try their breakfast, but I would not go out of my way to eat here.

Breakfast. Local, authentic, family run, good portions. Also reasonable prices and good variety of choices. Not Denny's. On the other hand, the spinach mushroom omelet was basic--required a dose of hot sauce, salt, and pepper to give some flavor. The hash potatoes were kind of mush on the inside--again, ketchup, salt needed. We also used up all the side hollandaise on our omelets in attempt to dress them up. But I guess that's why it's served with them.

If we had only visited for breakfast, the rating would be much higher. Unfortunately, we also decided to come back and try lunch. We should have realized the mistake when we got there at 1 PM and it was empty (compared to two days before when it was packed at 10 am). For breakfast, I recommend One Family Restaurant. I had the Local Boy omelet, which was an awesome combination of egg, kimchi, and Portuguese sausage. For lunch, I had a very mediocre Teri burger. So, yeah. Breakfast.

This was my favorite breakfast place in Kauai. It's definitely better than Kountry Kitchen, although it doesn't get as good reviews, and I'm not sure why. I had the breakfast burrito both times I was there. While it's a little small, it does come with your choice of fresh fish. On the days we were there, it was mahi, or ahi. My meal also came with a side of starch, one one visit I had the pancake and on the other, I had the sweet bread French toast. A perfect combo of savory protein, and a little bit of something sweet. The pancake, and french toast were both good. The french toast was much more flavorful and less greasy than at Kountry Kitchen. Prices are very reasonable, and the service was pleasant and friendly. I saw a sign that they are open for dinner on the weekends, and serve saimin. I'd love to come back and try that.

This was a nice breakfast place away from the tourist joints that are overcrowded. We stopped here on the way to a snorkeling/hiking day on the North Shore. The food was hearty, and I'd recommend the pancakes. The service was a little iffy because the restaurant had a vibe that many 'local' places have in Kauai - they seemed a little skittish about tourists. They seemed to look down on that crowd. Their eggs menu was huge - dozens of choices - and they didn't have the ahi special listed on the board out front. My wife ordered an ahi omelette and got a little bit of attitude as if such a thing might not be available. To be clear, there are lots of cool local places in Kapaa such as Big Wave Daves where they totally embrace out-of-town visitors. For example, we went there on a football day and they were friendly because we were football fans not because we drove a rental car. So all in all - check it out if you need a decent breakfast on the way to the North Shore, but don't expect to be embraced and blown away.

If you want flies in your face, cold coffee, warm smoothies (yes I did say warm), this place is for you. If you don't, your better off running not walking to someplace else. The "family" service was horrible. It looks like they need more cousins or siblings to come in and take over that actually have a brain. Will never return and I almost feel like I want to throw up my food after that one. Buyer beware!!!!!

Came here for lunch after doing breakfast the day before at Kountry Kitchen. Kinda wish we went back to Kountry Kitchen instead. The place was still pretty busy for lunch, which would typically mean it's still a good place to eat. I ordered the patty melt, which wasn't anything to write home about. The fries were probably the best part. At one point I asked for more napkins for our party and the waitress came back with lemons instead. "Napkins" sounds like "lemons"? I guess so... Decent place to give a try. Maybe breakfast IS better here. Maybe I'll give them a try again when I'm back in town.

Pretty basic local place. A confession before I start, we went there for lunch. They may very well have an amazing breakfast, but their lunch is nothing to write home about (but, clearly enough to Yelp about :-). The food was marginal, the service a bit slow, and the bill was high for what you got. ($40 for two of us). All in all, if you don't have a choice, you can get a fill-up here, but with so many other options, I probably won't be back

We went here for breakfast. Can't rate this as a 4 star due to the hair in my hubby's water - which never got replaced. The French toast breakfast was pretty average. I did try the coconut syrup served with it, but I wasn't a fan. My husband had the Ono special #2 which was decent. The fried rice was good as well as the Portuguese sausage. Overall decent experience. Suggest not sitting on the small patio due to the flies.

Best shave ice I have had so far on Kauai. The owner was very friendly, even kept the stand open when we arrived just after closing. Get the ice cream ball. FYI, I'm not sure the shave ice stand is really related to the restaurant.

  • Pachi C.

Food: The shave ice stand that is adjacent is awesome Service: Friendly Price: Awesome The Ono Ono shaved ice stand is connected to this restaurant and is fantastic. As many flavors as you want and a snow cap included in a $3 large ice. Ice is fluffy, and syrup isn't overwhelming. Lychee syrup was my favorite! Hubby and I felt this place was better than Jo Jo's in Waimea by far.

This review is for the restaurant, not the shave ice place attached to it. The owner of this place is an exceptional woman. She's friendly, energetic, and efficient. Unfortunately, on our visit here, it was also obvious she was trying desperately to run the entire restaurant by herself. After she seated us, the rest of her staff ignored us entirely for about half an hour. Then a bus boy asked if we wanted anything to drink. We asked for water, but also said we were ready to order. He disappeared, and we saw neither water nor our waitress for another ten minutes. Finally, after noticing we had not yet been served, the owner went and physically brought our waitress to us. The waitress was neither apologetic nor friendly, but took our orders. She returned with our food much later, and then once we were done came with the check. No one checked on us at all during the meal. The food was quite tasty, as were the coffee and smoothies. Prices were also good, especially for the area. If they could hire some staff who at least looked like they might want to serve you, this place could be great. As is, three stars would be overly generous.

I had my favorite guilty pleasure breakfast, corned beef hash. Onos serves it with two coddled eggs, with a side of hollandaise and a a slice of papaya. Service was good and courteous. I asked for the hash browns grilled crispy and it came out just how I was ordered it. Good shave ice too and they also have a Filipino form called halo halo which most shave ice places do not offer. Reasonable prices. Worth the wait. A feel of old Hawaii.

stopped by for breakfast. wife has eaten here before many years ago but my first time. the food was merely acceptable and the restaurant looked pretty shabby. fried rice was disappointing. portuguese sausage was fine. wife's fish was overcooked but tasted good. there are better choices for breakfast nearby.

Delicious local treats! I ordered the "Halo Halo" and it was fantastic, with taro root ice cream, local fruit and beans inside coconut milk and shaved ice. Similar to a bubble tea, but very tasty. My wife also ordered a shaved ice and it was HUGE! I would recommend splitting one though for two or three people, as it is super sweet and large serving. Lots of people seemed to be pouring out what they couldn't finish and unfortunately we did the same.

  • Melaina E.

They would get five stars if it weren't for the slow, disorganized and not-particularly-friendly service. Both times we went there, we had multiple people ask us for our drink orders. One time I never got the egg I ordered. The wait staff seem to be rushing around all the time and bickering with one another. But despite all that, the banana pancakes with their killer coconut syrup were worth going back more than once. In fact, we may have to go back yet again before we leave this island!

Ok so if you are reading some of my reviews from Kauai a lot of them are going to be focused on the shaved ice, but I'll talk about that after I talk about the food here. We came for lunch, and the food was great. My father got the macadamia nut waffles with the coconut syrup and I got the charred chicken. I'm not a huge fan of Hawaiian food (ew potato-mac) but I'm not going to count the stuff I'm naturally not a fan of. My father's pancakes were DELICIOUS though. Use the coconut syrup, not the normal syrup they give you. I guess you can experiment with that when you get there though, but I'm just saying. The coconut syrup is surprisingly not too sweet, and actually is less sweet than the regular syrup. The bananas on top give it a little freshness and the textures of the macadamia nut, coconut and banana are a great combination. It tastes and feel oh so good. So now the shaved ice, if I could review just the shaved ice it would also probably get 4 and a half starst. Out of the 9 places I went on the island it would probably be ranked 3. The ice texture was alright, not super shaved like my number 1 is, but whatever the next part is the best part. $3 for 4 flavors. FOUR FLAVORS!!!!!! I couldn't believe it, I was so giddy when I saw that (wow I'm such a fatty) PLUS you get free cream on top, although I think I like the normal sweetened condensed milk but I guess they don't use that there. They have a coconut condensed milk and a vanilla one. They were okay, I guess it depends if you're into that or not. Defiantly stop there! So why 4 stars instead of 5 stars? Like I'm sure you're thinking "come on Jill, you say the pancakes and the shaved ice are great, what's with the missing star". Well one morning my parents went to breakfast without me and my parents were horrified to see someone bringing in a package of Krusty's pancake mix. It's like meh, but it made a review that was on the fence from 4 or 5 stars down to 4 stars. But still, who cares, go there!

Best Shave Ice EVER!!! Warning: If you order the Kauai Sunrise with Mac. Nut Ice Cream on your first day in Kauai be prepared to spend a lot of car time on your way back to Kapaa for more. Better book your hotel on the East Shore! The service here is so friendly and fast. You can even sit on the patio with your shave ice and dream up future flavor combinations. I miss this place already! Ono for sure!

I am a regular at Ono Family Restaurant. When I leave after breakfast, the cashier says, "see you tomorrow". She is usually right. They are open 365 days per year and open at 7am. If you arrive before they open, they will let you in and give you coffee, tea, or hot chocolate while you wait for the kitchen to open. All of the waitresses are friendly and attentive. The food is great and prices are very reasonable. "Ono" means very good. It is aptly named.

My husband and I went to this restaurant yesterday for breakfast. Our server, I don't know her name because she didn't bother to tell us took forever to come to our table. When she finally did we had a few questions about the menu. She sseemed annoyed by this. After our questions were answered she began to walk away. If we needed to time to think she should have least asked for our drink orders. As she was walking away I called her back and said we were ready. Again, she was annoyed. She wrote down our order and again walked away. Then we remembered she didn't take out drink order. So again, I call her back. She is still annoyed. We wait and wait and wait. No coffee. We have water sitting in front of us that we don't want to drink because there is something floating in it. So I finally ask an older lady for our coffee and she seems annoyed. At that time I look over and our server is on her cell phone. Shortly there after her family walks in the door and all hope is lost for us get anything else at this point. Our food is plopped down on the table. And she is gone again. No coffee refill. Just a dropped check. Food was just okay. Nothing special. If we had excellent service I would have given a better review. Let me just mention I am a bartender and sometime server. Let me just thank this woman who is a pitiful excuse for a server for inspiring me to do my job better.

The guy from the rental car agency recommended this place to us for breakfast. He said he goes to the Ono Family Restaurant each week and it's a favorite of all the locals. The food is delicious. The coconut syrup here is THE BEST!!!! It's homemade and so light and delicious - the best we had yet. I got a side of fried rice with my breakfast and it was amazing! We didn't order the fruit bowls, but they looked amazing and I would recommend getting one. My husband got the French toast and said it was delicious. A true local hot spot. There is a line so be prepared to wait 10-20 minutes for breakfast but it's worth it!!

Pretty average food. Nice staff, perhaps a little disorganized. But, a nice local place to have food.

Breakfast was yummy! Banana, macadamia nuts, and coconut pancakes topped with the same and coconut syrup and whipped cream. Unless you have a hefty appetite the stack of 2 is plenty or order the stack of 3 and share them.

This place is awesome for breakfast. We went twice during our stay on Kauai and loved it both times. Check out any of the omelets with avocado in them...they pretty much put a whole one in there! The Ono #2 is also awesome.

About 15 people waiting outside at 9am on a Tuesday, 10 minute wait. Our table of five each gave five stars on their meals of pancakes, Denver omelette, and Local Boy. Loved the Local Boy, an interesting combination but pleasantly ono, especially with the fried rice. Huge portions. Nice staff. Cups of coffee and water were constantly being topped off.

My boyfriend and I visited Ono Family Restaurant for breakfast. From reading a few reviews on Yelp, the place wasn't all that busy for a Tuesday morning around 9... After bring seated the hostess gave us our menus and brought our attention to the specials on the board which definitely caught my bfs eye. He quickly decided on getting the Kyra's Loco Moco (two over easy eggs on kalua pork) with a choice of fried rice and toast. I had my mind set on trying the Farmers Omelet but after looking over the menu I decided to try the Bacon Avacado Omelet (bacon, avacado, cheese). Besides their wide variety of omlets I was also surprised to find that the omelets were made with THREE scrabbled eggs therefore I was not expecting an ordinary tiny little omelet. When ordering I did ask if the avacado pieces were big, since it was going to be my first time trying avacado I was a little cautious. The waitress said the avacado would be in strips and asked me if I would prefer them chopped up which I agreed to have. When the food arrived, our eyes grew wide when we caught sight of our meals. My omelet was jam-packed and my bf's plate looked like a big heap of loco moco, we were totally excited to dig in. My meal turned out very delicious but my bf's meal on the other hand was a disppointment. We both tasted his dish and found the gravy/ kalua pork to be very bland, he practically doused hot sauce all over it to give it some kind of flavor in order to finish it. I felt bad I just told him that he just picked the wrong meal to try because my omlet was fulfilling and flavorful. The bacon was crisp, the avacado soft and the eggs was cooked perfectly. I didnt even mind the avocado, it gave my omelet a unique taste compared to the basic bacon and cheese omelet that I always had. I will definetly be back to try more and have already convinced the bf to come back also! Friendly and fast service, great food on mybehalf, therefore I am a happy camper!

Best breakfast I've had in Hawaii. Great interior, with beautiful ceiling fans and old wood booths. The scramble I had was really incredible with Avocado and a spicy tomatillo sauce. With a side of Banana pancakes and their homemade coconut syrup, you have started your day off right. Go here, it's really good.

Best shave ice we have had in a week on the island. Fantastic. Better than Jojo's in Waimea. Better than Wishing Well in Hanalei (which was great) -- five stars. If there is a line, do yourself a favor and just wait

This review is for the shaved ice stand. The best thing about this place is they carry 5-6 syrups which are sweetened with agave instead of cane sugar or corn syrup. It is not as sweet and I think more delicious. Would come back just for this.

Worst food so far on Kauai. Had tropical pancakes, garden patch eggs and breakfast special. All were blah. Service was indifferent. Maybe place would have Been better if we weren't vegetarian or tourists.

    (2)
  • Mike G.

Best pancakes ever (tropical) which came w/ hot coconut & maple syrup, thank you very much. Our eggs, hash browns and bacon was very standard, but very well done. Coffee was great and the service was awesome and very welcoming.

Down home, no frills, straight on Good Local food. Friendly host at front. Not fancy. Just good food that is like going to Aunties house. They treat tourist and locals like family. Go here instead of touristy bad food traps like Olympic Cafe.

Better quality than Kountry Kitchen, but ultimately standard breakfast fare served by charming upbeat locals... not sure that is worth the long wait, though...

Back on Kauai after many many years, visiting my girlfriends family and participating in her 40th High School reunion. Her twelve year old daughter told me about Ono Family restaurant so we went. I had a Local Boy omelet and the twelve year old had the Ono Burrito. I have never seen such generous portions of meat. My girlfriend had the fried rice which was much better than the hash browns. If you are a coffee drinker, you will not be disappointed. My new family and I highly rate Ono Family Restaurant and will return later this weekend!

We went here twice... Once for breakfast and once for shaved ice... The breakfast was good. Typical Hawaiian... They have loco moco and all the rest... The shaved ice was excellent, just as you'd expect.

This place reminds me of a Hawaiian diner which serves up legit authentic Hawaiian goodies. Came here for lunch and ordered the pork loco moco over fried rice and 2 eggs which came with 4 half slices of buttered wheat toast. Added the hashbrowns for another 4 bux. The portion size was great, and the price was right (~11 bux). The food was yummy. Juicy pork with the delicious gravy served on the side. The fried rice left much to be desired, but anything would've tasted good with that pork. The eggs were decent and was a nice touch. The wifey ordered the fish sandwich which was their fresh fish of the day (mahi mahi) fried and made into a sandwich which also was a decently sized plate. They also offer shaved ice just outside their restaurant in the front, but we were way too full for that. However, it was my first experience with pork loco moco, and it was yummy, and Im pretty sure terrible for your health, o well. If Im in the area again, will try their shaved ice.

My family spent time in Kaui for a week and we ended up having TWO breakfasts there b/c we LOVED it. It's the typical Hawaiian style in service speed and decor, etc, but it was a lovely place to spend the morning before touring around. HIghly recommend the banana, maccadamian nut, coconut pancakes. They are incredible. Don't expect 5 star coffee (it's pretty typical of a casual bfast place), but enjoy the pancakes!!

Best shave ice we found in Kauai. Don't bother with the drive for Jo Jo's. Ono Ono is the way to go. We tried quite a few while in the islands and this was the only one we visited more than once.

Fast, fresh, and friendly. The food here is always good. They have traditional Hawaiian plates, as well as your standard American fare. I've never had a bad meal here. You gotta try it.

  • RC B.

Good experience with a broad menu and a relatively short wait. Service was just ok but the food was good....I had the eggs and mahi mahi and the fish was quite good. Don't expect cute or elegant here, just a local cafe with good food.

    (3)
  • Peter A.

The folks here manage to keep a more-or-less comfortable, cozy atmosphere despite being totally swamped for breakfast on a weekday morning. There was a fairly long wait, and it was hard to get a waitress' attention once I had my food. The food, for its part, is of ordinary quality but unusually creative. It was worth the wait because I wanted to try something uniquely Hawaiian, but I wouldn't make a habit of coming here.

We went here Saturday morning and had a party of 8. They asked us if we wanted to sit together and wait about 20 minutes or we could sit separate and would be seated right away. Obviously we wanted to be seated together so we waited about 20 minutes for the booths to open up. After being seated there were 5 of the 8 seated, we were still waiting on 3 others who were just up the street. When we were first seated one of our cousins asked if she could order toast for her son who is 2 years old. She was told no because we had to wait on our server. After being refused toast and a couple minutes still no one identified themselves as our server. Now the rest of the party was maybe 3 minutes away. The owner who is a guy with a ponytail asked us if we wanted something to drink, I figured that I would speed things up and knew that the rest of the party wanted coffee so I had asked for 5 coffee's but to my astonishment I was refused, I was told that I could have 2 but would have to wait on the other 3 to be seated until I could get the rest of the coffee. It would be cold by the time they got there. We finally asked a lady and we asked if she was our server and she asked is it all on one bill and we said yes. Her reply was "I guess I can take your order." What, are you kidding me? Did you just say that to local customers? I guess so! So she took our order and was very abrupt. No suggestive ordering, honestly it was like we had completely inconvienanced this place. And then it was like they were punishing our section because they brought the one tables food first then brought ours like 10 minutes later. Even people who were seated after us got their food before us. Oh, and then after they saw that it was my in-laws and the owner knew them they started to be nice. Are you serious, you treat people nice because you know someone. I think not, it shouldn't matter who you are. The food was good, I had ordered the full order of banana pancakes and the pancakes were light and fluffy, with a nice amount of banana in them and on top. It was served with butter and coconut syrup and maple syrup. Thats why I bumped it up to 1 star, because if I could have given it a 1/2 star thats what they would get! I'm not sure if they were angry because they were working new years day, but don't take it out on your customers, especially the ones that eat there often. Me and my wife made the conclusion that we will probably never go back there.

This is the only breakfast place we went to our our last day of our trip in Kauai. My husband tried the Loco Moco (hamburger patty served over rice and gravy) while I decided to get the Eggs Hash which is over easy eggs over corned beef hash. Surprisingly we both enjoyed the Loco Moco and the eggs hash is typical hawaiian style breakfast fare. They also have a freshly made fruit jelly that they served with our toast which was good. You can buy a jar to take home if you really like the jelly. The service is quick, there's a minimal wait time and you may end up seating outdoors but there is unlimited coffee refills and they come around frequently.

Easy place to recommend in Kapaa. I had the kim chee omelet with all kinds of bad for you things in it --- delicious! The atmosphere is definitely local Hawaii, and we love it. We arrived with a group of 8 and had no problems getting seated or with service.

One of the best places to eat on Kauai! Great breakfast food; fantastic banana, macadamia nut pancakes! Also serves lunch. It's interior is old and kitschy, but it doesn't spoil the food. I absolutely recommend!

Despite what Andy said in Ultimate Kauai, the service here was really friendly from the guy who sat us to the gal who served us. Service with a smile. Fried rice with eggs and portuguese sausage was well executed. Fried rice made in bacon fat --- YUM. It came with toast that had a great passionfruit spread. I don't care for toast that comes slather/dripping in butter, but blotted it off the napkin and scarfed it down.

The food was good, the service not so good. Little bit too pricey for breakfast, but to be expected since it's on Kauai. We were seated prior to other patrons( 2 couples) and were served our food after them. Our wait time for our food was too long. They were very under-staffed. Asked my fiancee if he wanted coffee, and he didn't answer in time for her, then she left quickly. I think it's little overrated.

This place was DOPE. My special lady and I showed up around 8am on a Saturday morning and were seated promptly. The menu was expansive, and the specials board was pretty long as well. The fresh fish of the day was Ahi, and we ordered the Ahi Benedict and a Local Boy Omelette to share. Everything was excellent, and the staff was really friendly and attentive. Overall, a great traditional breakfast joint with a nice local flavor to it.

We had the spinach and mushroom omelette and the French toast (sweet bread). Both were good ... Large quantities and tasty. Coconut syrup was a hit. We may have been expecting a bit "better" because of all the other tremendously positive reviews but, overall, we were quite satisfied. We also tried their Shave Ice and it was delicious as well as enormous. (We had it around 6:00 pm and had to skip our supper...)

Had a farmers sandwich which wasn't bad but wasn't great either. The service was pretty slow, I know on the island things are a little more relaxed but just seemed slower than usual. Could see into the kitchen directly which was cool but kinda weird at the same time.. probably wouldn't go back here.

This review is for lunch only. We went at 12:30 and were the only ones in there, bad sign already. It didn't feel clean, even for local standards. We ate fried noodles, a bacon cheeseburger and my daughter had a kids breakfast meal. It was just so-so. Only my daughter enjoyed her meal. I might possibly try it again for breakfast but definitely not lunch.

This may be the best place for breakfast on Kauai. I went here twice on my vacation. Breakfast was wonderful for the whole party of ten. First time I had the Local Boy omelet with kim chee and Portuguese sausage, strange sounding but delicious. The second time I had the Tropical Stack which was banana pancakes with coconut and macadamia nuts. It was served with coconut syrup which I didn't know existed but if you like coconut, it will be a treat. The place is a nice, homey local hangout.

My wife and I made a stop here for lunch from touring the Kauai Coffee and Kookie Factory. I enjoyed their Loco Moco (my first local to try). It's tasty and simple. My kind of comfort food. Friendly staff and homey feel. Best of all, it is right next to an ice shave store.

OMG the Eggs Ono were sooo good! And the breakfast menu had a large amount of truly interesting choices, even for my SF bay area palate, somewhat jaded from so many breakfasts out. We loved this place and will be back when we visit the island.

This review is for their shave-ice stand only. All the locals recommended either Jo-Jo's (the original one) or Ono Family Restaurant for the best shaved ice in Kauai. We tried both, and Ono was the winner for us! They have cheaper prices than Jo-Jo's and they give much more. The ice was super fluffy and the toppings were delicious...they have soooo many toppings to choose from. They have one size (which is easily big enough for 2 people) and you can pick up to 4 toppings for only $3! Extra fixins such as ice cream, beans, snow caps, etc. cost extra. We got coconut, pineapple, passionfruit, and mango with macnut ice cream and coconut snow cap. This was definitely a winner! Best shaved ice I've had!

Breakfast: salisbury steak with gravy, sourdough toast with a little too much butter (yum!), fried rice and two eggs sunny side up. Mix it all together and it will cure anything you did last night.

Pretty good breakfast. My parents and I stopped here right after landing in Kauai. We were trying to find Kountry Kitchen but got lost so we decided to stop here. I am not much of a breakfast foods eater so I ordered the Portugese sausage and side of rice. It was quite good, although it's hard to go wrong with that. The rest of the food looked good and my parents enjoyed their food. Although for the loco moco, not much gravy was given. The staff was quite nice and worked as fast as they could with morning breakfast crowd coming in. The only thing that was difficult was the parking lot. It was a small lot and hard to get out of, so I suggest parking on the back side of the restaruant or on the street.

Popped in here for lunch. The menu was simple and classic Hawaiian/Filipino food. Eggs and Spam, eggs and beef, you name it, they're probably pairing it up with eggs. Ordered the eggs and steak, came with papaya fruit. I wolfed it down in about 2 minutes and 14 seconds. Tasty. I licked the plate clean.

  • Kristen M.

Delicious!!! Get the fried rice when you can over hash browns or white rice. And for all the mainlanders/foreigners, come to Hawaii with an open mind. Don't turn your nose at the spam on the menu. At least give it a try. If you truly don't like it, fine, but don't talk about how disgusting it is out loud so other tables can hear. it's rude and you look like a snob. remember someone at another table is enjoying their spam, it's not appetizing to hear negative things about your dish as you are eating it! Absolutely delicious local grinds here!!

  • Leslie T.

Stopped here for breakfast on the way to the airport...it was all good. I had an excellent smoothie and a breakfast English muffin sandwich and my husband had a smoothie and the open-faced breakfast sandwich. Service was fast and the food was good. They did over charge me for my English muffin sandwish by $4, and it took them forever to correct the error and give me a new c.c. slip to sign, but the "lady in charge" was very nice and the food good, so we would eat breakfast here again.

Ono Family is nothing fancy, but very solid and very local. People who run it are very nice and yes, the food is pretty standard, but we found the food on the entire island to be fairly standard, meaning nothing was exceptional, but fortunately nothing sucked!

  • Grace T.

The breakfast here is greasy and filling, which is not uncommon when it come to local food. I had a breakfast burrito that kept me full until our afternoon snorkeling trip. All the aunties were quick to help you get whatever we needed.

  • Tiffaney L.

Had a delicious breakfast here. Mac nut pancakes (without bananas) and coconut syrup. Now I'm not usually a coconut fan but the syrup had just the right amount of sweetness and was kept warm the entire time. Also got a side of Portuguese sausage and that was good too. Will be thinking of this breakfast for awhile.

Very good breakfast! Went at 10am on a Tuesday and was half empty. It is winter though! Seems to be a place locals enjoy. I had mushroom spinach omelet which was perfect size and came with hollandaise and hashbrowns. Not greasy or oily and the veggies were fresh. Everyone loved their food, florentine and Canterbury (?) benedits were yummy and my folks are picky! :) banana pancakes for my daughter with warm! coconut syrup and my husband loved the French toast. The waitresses are very nice, wish we could eat here every morning!

Oh yes! Oh yes! to Ono Ono Shave Ice! This review is for the shave ice stand which is AWESOME! Their shave ice was light and fluffy plus the snow cap topping of either coconut or vanilla makes the flavors taste even better. Better than anywhere else we tried in Kauai. Owner Kenny & his wife (sorry, I missed her name) were friendly. They were patient and explained everything even though they've probably seen a zillion tourists stand there and take forever to order, overwhelmed at the flavor choices. I wish that we had Ono Ono Shave ice at home.

We saw previous reviews on YELP and decided to make the trip during our Walmart Trip. My husband had The hash and said it was a good solid breakfast. I had the MCA omelette (mushroom, cheese and avocado) and it was delicious. The hollandaise sauce added a little something. I had fried rice with mine, and it was amazing! Maybe next time we'll try the pancakes.

18 years ago on our honeymoon, my husband and I ate at Ono's and the Canterbury Eggs Benedict blew us away. So it was the first stop on my mother-daughter getaway. It's still delicious, but not as bountiful as 18 years ago (when the Canterbury was something like 4 inches high and so huge you could barely finish it). We returned another time to give it another try and shared the bacon avocado omelette and tropical pancakes. The waitress so kindly split both so we could have our own plates. The tropical pancakes were terrific (we ilked them better than Kountry Kitchen's), and the omelette was very good as well (although not as bountiful as Kountry Kitchen's, but with hollandaise and sour cream on the side, my daughter thought that made up for it). Ono!

Stop by for lunch on our way back to Poipu from the North Shore. Little homey type cafe. Had the Mahi Mahi sandwich, cooked perfect , flaky, very good. Wife had the Portuguese pork platter with side of mash potatoes, gravy, and veggies, tasty and hearty. Kids all had the BLT grilled cheese sandwiches, all smiles from that side of the table. Great little spot to grab a bite. Need to hit this place up for breakfast heard a lot of good things.

Came for lunch, had the fresh local fish. Included salad and choice of sides- the fries were OK, the fish was decent. Atmosphere was island like- very open, nice breeze coming through the restaurant. You don't get this kind of experience eating in Wisconsin. Overall, not very memorable, but you get decent value for your money and it's in a decent location.

My husband and I recently got back from our trip to Kauai. We had breakfast here twice!! The Tropical Shorty was amazing! Everything you think of on pancakes in Hawaii...coconut, banana and macadamia nuts! We bought their coconut syrup for ourselves and for family. I also loved the linguica and my husband loved the bacon fried rice with his eggs in the morning. When we get back there we will for sure go there again!

Went here fir breakfast during our stay on Kauai. The service was good (for Hawaii) and everyone was friendly. I had the Manhattan Beach omlette and my husband had steak and eggs. Food was OK but nothing special. We liked Kountry Kitchen much better.

We've gone to Ono Family Restaurant for every time we've come to Kauai, which spans 20 years. Not much has changed in that time. My wife had the tropical (bananas, macadamia nuts, sweet whipped cream with both coconut and maple syrups) pancake stack and I, an omelette with hash browns. You have to forget about the calories; both were wonderful. We could not begin to finish all we were served. We'll be back.

Nice healthy portions and excellent service... My coffee cup never got half way! Recommended by local lady from Brick Oven Pizza place and by me as well !! Good eats, nice people and decent prices... There was a little mishap on our bill, but it was dealt with professionally with the Aloha spirit!!

You can't vacation in Hawaii and not eat local food and eating was what I did. I decided to head over to Ono family restaurant for a possible loco moco which consisted of a fried egg on top of a hamburger patty on top of white rice and topped with gravy. Sounds pretty gross but it's a local favorite and I wanted to blend in with the locals. We were seated in a comfy booth, given a menu, and ordered some water and coffee. Our water came out but the coffee never made it out. Coffee didn't make it out the second time but third time was the charm. Instead of ordering a loco moco I ordered a local boy. Yea, I ordered a local boy. A local boy is an omelet with kimchee, Portuguese sausages, and cheese with a side of toast and hash brown. I wish it was that easy to order a "local boy." He would feed me pineapples and the other local boy would fan me down with banana leaves. Unfortunately I just got an omelet but fortunately the omelet was delicious. Never knew the flavors of cheese and kimchee would go so well together. The omelet and has was a perfect home-style breakfast. I did manage to take a couple of bites of the loco moco and it was also very tasty but much heavier. The service was a bit spotty but I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone in search for Hawaiian comfort food,

We went here for breakfast before going up north to Princeville. I had the eggs and cornbeef and it was sooo yummy. It was an egg cooked overeasy on top of cornbeef with butter on the side. This was one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. The jam they use for the bread was also very good and it came with a large piece of papaya. I may be bias because papaya is one of my favorite things to eat but this place is great. The service was very good and the older ladies working there reminded me of my mom and always made sure we had enough coffee and water. Highly recommended for breakfast!

Great place to stop if your staying in at the south side and driving to the north side for the day. It's about half way and has a great breakfast. We enjoyed the ahi eggs benedict and the banana, coconut, macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup.

My wife and I had breakfast and lunch there a couple of times. One of the great things we liked about Ono was the food. Your basic Hawaiian and Filipino combination along with some American classics (some with a twist). The service was friendly and helpful. It's not blazing fast. If you're not familiar with 'Hawaiian Time' then don't come here. Go to some more mainstream restaurant if you favor speed over quality. The food was great and very filling. I don't think you can get more food with great taste as compared with more of the 'mainstream' restaurants in the area. One of the great 'Bang for your Buck' restaurants on the east shore of Kauai.

Awesome breakfast menu with great price. Much cheaper than a breakfast at a hotel and much better food! Shave ice is great too

One of the great things about staying in Kauai is the local breakfast spots. On the east side your best options are Kountry Kitchen or Ono, like Coke and Pepsi, on opposite sides of the main street in Kapaa, about a mile apart. We've tried both, but something about Ono keeps us coming back, every time we visit, sometimes every day. It is a quaint family-run establishment with character. It's the type of place you just want to kick back and read the paper while enjoying a cup of Joe. Pancakes are great, as is everything we've had for breakfast.

Food was alright. We had the loco moco and Ono #2. I think the only thing I liked is their Fried Rice. Lots of locals. Friendly service.

We recently visited Ono Family Restaurant 3x over our 9 day stay in Kauai. Was really a convenient walk across the street from our condo at Pono Kai. Recommend going at 11 am (less crowded), when they still serve breakfast, & start serving lunch. Our daughters loved their stir-fried noodles & fried rice! Hearty servings, attentive staff & pretty quick service esp. with a small kitchen. Great Shave Ice Stand too.

Good solid breakfast, good service, a little pricey for what it is. I like Eggbert's better as a breakfast option, and its right up the road.

the question is........... when can i go back and have a kimchee and portuguese sausage omelet with fried rice!?!??!?!?!?! not soon enough. service was quick, efficient, although not very personal. fine with me. 2nd best breakfast i have had on kauai......... dont be afraid.......

Great breakfast, good portions & fairly cheap. Get the Local Boy omelet- the kim chee makes it delicious. I usually put ketchup on my eggs but no need here, this omelet had a lot of good flavor, TRY IT. We ended up here after we couldnt find kountry kitchen & we were glad we did bc the food was good & the service was great. The next day we did go to kountry kitchen and both agreed that it wasnt worth the hype & we liked the food at Ono better. Skip KK & get your local boy here.

My favorite place for breakfast on Kauai. The Mrs and I do a split - the Ono breakfast no 2 and a tropical shorty. Eggs over easy or poached (to go on the fried rice), portuguese sausage, fresh papaya, and those wonderful banana pancakes topped with banana, whipped cream, Mac nuts and their always hot coconut syrup. Plus a coffee. ONO! This will get you through anything the day throws at you.

Great breakfast place! I had the best fresh fruit bowl here. The papaya and pineapple were so sweet...I loved it so much!

I had one of the best breakfast I ever had here! Parking does suck, but I was told this was where the locals go, so my friends and I had to try it! I ordered an omelet with Portuguese sausage and Kim - chee...it was delicious!! I usually don't like omelets, but i loved this one. i also got a side of fried rice which was good as well. I would highly recommend this place!

Great cheap spot to grab some morning grub! The outdoor seating is a little noisy as it is basically on Route 56. The service was OK, they are very nice and fill your coffee non-stop, but the kitchen was a little slow getting out the breakfast. The food was excellent and the menu is pretty expansive. If you are looking to get a reasonable and good breakfast near Kapa'a, this is prob your best bet.

This unpretentious gem was the best "value" resturant we found in Kauaii (if such a thing exists!). It's right across the street from the graveyard in Kapaa - don't let that put you off! The food was fresh and well prepared. The wait staff seem to be all locals and were friendly and effecient. This is a very popular breakfast place so consider stopping for lunch. All the sandwiches and salads are great! I didn't get to try the shaved ice - too full!

My family and I were not impressed at all with this place. During an 8 day trip to Kauai we went out to breakfast four times, all places were substantially better than this place. First of all, if you go, dont go for the atmosphere. its not nice at all. The host was nice enough, but the waitress never even smiled. The food was adequate at best.

  • Halley S.

Our waiter at Hukilau Lanai suggested that this place would be a good choice for breakfast. So the next morning we gave it a shot. I was not that impressed. The coffee lacked in flavor and the food was kind of bland... I think my biggest complaint would be the omelet ... I ordered the omelet that had bacon and avocado in it. The problem is that they just put a whole half a avocado underneath a layer of eggs. My girlfriend got a omelet that had tomato in it and instead of it being a omelet with diced tomato it had huge slices of tomato underneath a layer of eggs. Kind of weird... I probably would have been fine with it if it had lots of flavor but it did not. No one in my party was that impressed so we decided to find another breakfast place to try.

Very good breakfast. Got right in even though they were pretty busy. Food was fresh and good sized portions. We had the florentine benedict and the veggie patch, which came with their awesome fried rice...yum. Pineapple juice was fresh, and not overly expensive Service was good.

Great food and even better service. Price is pretty average for Hawii. It's always busy but they will seat you pretty quick. After the meal if there's room try out their shaved ice stand next door, AWESOME!!!

Had breakfast here and couldn't complain. Good portions. Decent pricing. The fried rice here absorbs all the yummy goodness from their grill and has a distinct meaty flavor to it. A must get with your meal.

Had breakfast at Ono Family Restaurant in Kapaa. Really good service and good food (impressed for Kauai!) I would call it a typical Hawaiian Diner. We were seated promptly (~8am on a Thursday) and our beverages came immediately. The dining room was mostly full, maybe 1-2 empty tables. My coffee was constantly refilled - nothing spectacular, but still good. I had the special strawberry French toast with sweet bread and strawberry crème--very good! (9/10) Probably one of the best breakfasts I have had in a while, and the best on the island. My husband had the special ahi and avocado omelet which was served with a yummy tomatillo sauce/salsa and hash browns. (8/10) Also got a huge bowl of fresh fruit and Portuguese sausage on the side. It was a lot of food. All for about $40. I would say a good deal for being in Kauai, the amount of food, the service and the quality of the food. Hard to beat. 4.5 to 5 stars.

  • Wayne T.

My wife and I had brunch at Ono's and found some pretty good local choices. We shared a Denver omelet and a short stack of tropical pancakes. The omelet was decent with fresh bell peppers and good ham, but didn't mesh very well. The tropical pancakes were good with a mix of fruit flavors. The biggest problem was the service. While we were expecting to be served in "Hawaiian" time, it took AT LEAST 45 minutes to get our food. Supposedly, they lost our order sheet in the kitchen...but it's difficult to believe since we were one of two tables filled at that time--they just simply weren't paying attention. So the food is good with a local flavor, but bring a book and a board game because it might be a while before you get your food!

Kenny not only runs one of the nicest place in Kauai, but the fried rice is the best on the island. To bad we found this place on our last day otherwise we would be eating there everyday of our visit.

This place is delicious! anything you pick will be tasty, so win-win! my sisters and i had.... * Tropical pancakes: macadamian nuts, shredded coconut, bananas - the pancakes are soft, warm, and fluffy. there are toppings inside the pancakes AND on top of the stack, plus it comes with the best warm, coconut syrup i've had yet. its AMAZING!!! You can put that syrup on anything and it would taste better..... stale bread....old celery....anchovies....puppies....wait what? * Captains platter: NOT a fish platter, its just a platter with 2 small filets, the fish is also firm for my taste. BUT the tarter sauce is so damn good it makes up for the size of the fish. the combo comes with two scoops of rice (white or tasty fried rice) and a slice of bread. the bread also accompanied by a home made apricot spread. god is in the details, my friend. * loco moco: kalua pork fried rice and fried egg - soft, succulent, and we chose to have on a bed of taste fried rice. comes with brown gravy! mmmm! * Fruit salad: an abundance of ripe, sugary fresh strawberries, papaya, pineapple. i haven't had anything bad here - its reasonably priced and everything is painfully good!

Breakfast was the better than the lunches here. Breakfast platter with: Portugese pork (it's just their flavorful version of khalua pork) and fried rice w egg, gravy!! loco moco that makes your tastebuds dance. Healthy? Probably not. Fried rice and the gravy over that dish- who has that for breakfast?! I did- twice. Calories don't count on vacation right? This was my fav breakfast on the island. You can order your egg scrambled. We ate here a few times and got to know our waitress. This is only a short drive from Poipu & better than the breakfast places over there. Home cooked meal at your great grandmothers house. You'll see what I mean when you see the decor. There was a man delivering fresh flowers to the girl at the counter. Scanning the restaurant, i discovered fresh flowers were in vases in little cut outs in the wall- I missed them before- buried in all the knick knacks on the walls.

Brunch at Ono's yesterday on our way to the airport. The only negative about the whole experience was my watching the clock as it took a while to get seated, and then served - mind you though the service was great. Everything was said and done with a genuine smile, but at island pace. I should have given us an extra 30 mins and then we could have eaten at a more leisurely pace. I had the short stack of topical pancakes - done thing and yes you should too - where else will you get pancakes infused with bananas, macadamias with sliced bananas served with warm maple and coconut syrups!. Girls had various types of egg specials - with tomatillio, sausage etc. etc. All was very good and satisfying. I just wish we had more time and place in our tummies for the shave ice attached next door!

Why the stars- Portuguese fried rice and lau lau pork loco moco. Home-made guava/pineapple jam. Coconut syrup for those fluffy pancakes. Nice strong coffee. Interesting decor. Really liked the pictures on the walls of hula dancers in classical poses (I assume). What more can you ask for in the early morning?

Really old and dirty feeling with very slow service. Food was good but not exceptional. Not worth eating there for just the food alone. No air conditioning and the fans were very dirty. One and done for us.

I had read a review that the breakfast here was not as greasy as Kountry Kitchen so I came to see for myself. I ordered the Captain's Platter which is grilled mahi mahi, ahi or ono with eggs, steamed or fried rice or hashbrowns and toast. It's cheaper than Kountry Kitchen. And, it did turn out to be less greasy too. I had the ahi, which was simple. A squeeze of lemon juice did the trick. There's also some tartar sauce which I used sparingly. The scoop of steamed rice was generous. The toast was toasted dark (the way I like it), but was saturated with butter. There was a fruit spread provided on the side that tasted like papaya. I also tried their kona mocha which came with a huge topping of whipped cream. It was good. I wasn't sure which breakfast I liked more -- Ono Family or Kountry Kitchen -- since there there were positives to both. In the end though I gave this place one less star for all the flies that we had to keep swatting away during our meal. One tragically ended his life when he dove into the tartar sauce. Yuck.

During our stay in Kaua'i, we ate here every morning for 4 days. -Yummy breakfast with some Hawaiian options. It's solid breakfast, so don't expect a mind-blowing experience that will ruin all breakfasts in the future. Not sure if they deserve some of these 1 star reviews people are throwing out there. -Fresh papaya slice with most breakfast items -Super sweet and friendly staff. It's like you're at a friend's house and their grandparents and aunts are cooking & serving you. -Very reasonably priced Things to get: -POG juice -Ono #2 -French Toast Note: the service runs on "island time", so sit back and relax, sip your coffee and juice. If you're in a rush, it may not be the ideal place to eat.

Can't say enough about this restaurant, their food or Kenny, the owner. We had a great breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed the fact that Kenny sat down with us and chatted about the Island and some of his personal interests/causes/involvements with Island events. He also gave us some great tips on other places to dine and enjoy live music. If you are looking to experience some of the local flavor -- this is the place to come.

MOPS. Breakfast and shave ice from this place is a MUST if you are in Kauai. The portions are generous and the local ingredients are delicious. The steak & eggs here are on point. Man do Kauai cows taste good! All that lush grass they eat and fresh air they breathe I guess. Fried rice. Woh. I love the auntie servers and we had the opportunity to chill with the owner, Kenny. They made us feel at home. Truly ONO!

After spending the week on Kauai we were sad that it seemed impossible to find a good shave ice place that was open and had staff with an attitude that didn't make a fellow want to vomit. Ono Ono Shave Ice saved the day. Biggest regret: finding it the last day we were here. None the less, it is good shave ice. The flaky kind of shave ice, not the crap that is like a snow cone which many other places here serve. I was pleased.

  • T C.

Home cooking. Enough said. The pork chop and rice dish was a-ok (~$12) and the steak and eggs were basic and satisfactory (~$12). There is only about a handful of parking spots in the the lot this place shares w/ a few other businesses; otherwise only street parking available. Ambiance feels like someone's small, sticky home filled w/ loads of knick knacks and a noisy screen door. Other important info: near coconut marketplace, cash is king.

  • Heather W.

Ahi eggs benedict. Holy smokes, that was delicious. The hubby got the eggs florentine and loved it, but..ahi eggs benedict!!! The coconut syrup is the same as kountry kitchen, but warm. The tropical pancakes were ok, but not my favorite. The papaya coconut jam was really good. The servers are really nice, but expect to have to ask for everything a second time, including the check. I felt a bit like we were being held hostage, but the ahi eggs benedict would give me stockholm syndrome in a heartbeat.

This place sucks! If I could think of word worse then suck I would use it! Bad food....BAAAAAAAAAAAD service! No personality, no smiles, no emotions....we asked for an ice tea from the waitress as she was looking at us...she then turned around with nothing to say and walked away....the ice tea NEVER came! She did however bring 3 containers of mustard to our table!?!?! ahhhhh what?!?!?!?!?!? On top of that both our orders came out wrong! It wasn't even THAT busy!! C'mon!!! Yeah, so we definitely won't be back! And we are telling all our friends to beware of them too!

First trip to the island and I was debating between Ono Family Restaurant and Kountry Kitchen for a nice hearty breakfast. Kountry Kitchen was recommended to me by a few locals and they were right. After trying the loco moco at Kountry Kitchen, I gave Ono's a whirl anyway because of the comparable reviews and I ended up disappointed. Several empty tables yet we had to wait...I should've taken that as a sign and walked over to Pono Market instead. Service was nice but slow, even with the kids lending a hand (which was cute). The loco moco gravy was bland, spam was undercooked, and the burger patty was dry. My cousin's corned beef hash wasn't bad, but that's about it. Not deserving of the same rating as Kountry Kitchen.

  • LeeAnn M.

There will proably be a line for breakfast with a mix of locals and tourists. While you wait, study their specials board. You won't be able to see it again in their menu. I had the burrito, which was amply stuffed with sausage, bacon, veggies. Came with a side of toast, special mango jam, and salsa. Yummy! The only downside to my breakfast was having to shoo away the flies (we were sitting outside). I'll gladly return.Maybe with a fly swatter or I'll wait for an inside table.... but Definitely try if you like breakfast food! Yelp 31 Reviews Challenge #20/31

A bit overhyped to be honest. The food was good, but nothing to write home about. The portions are very generous, which I suspect is some of the appeal of this place. We had both the hash browns and the macademia nut pancakes, and I would recommend the pancakes to future customers. However, we ended up waiting close to an hour to get seated and have our food served, which just seems too long for fairly average food.

Corned beef was excellent. Ordered the steak and eggs and Kyras loco moco special. Fried rice was okay. Eggs were WAY undercooked. If you like over easy you better order over medium. Steak was dry. Pork tasted old. Service was slow, but expected that from other reviews. I won't be returning.

Great food and service. A loco moco first timer. We also got tropical pancakes. The only bad thing was the crazy kid and family in the booth next to us.

My main review here is for the shave ice stand connected to the restaurant - it's SO GOOD! $3 gets you up to 4 flavors, and FREE snow cap, either regular or coconut (yum, coconut!). For $1 more, you can get ice cream or lychee at the bottom. I totally recommend lychee on the bottom, lychee and coconut syrup, and coconut snow cap - I DIE it's so tasty. :) We had many a shave-ice during our 6-day stay, but Ono's was the best! The other places didn't have the (I think) more authentic shave ice maker - the one where the water is frozen in buckets so it's the big, round blocks that then get clamped into the shaver with the auger that spins the ice around. The blade must be hella sharp! The ice was so delicate and yummy ... other places, it was more snow-cone like ... grainy, bigger crystals. They were using machines where you put scoop-fuls of ice cubes into a hopper and it runs them through a different kind of blade, I believe. ANYWAY! Get Ono shave ice! :) Service at the stand was really friendly, however a bit on the slow side, but that gave us ample time to figure out our flavor combinations so we didn't mind at all! There's a bright green gecko that lives under their flavor board and he likes to come down and nom on syrup that's been spilled on the counter, so look for him! He's cute. :) We did have breakfast at the restaurant one morning and it was tasty ... especially the buttered toast with the house jelly! I ordered the Ono #1 breakast with scrambled eggs, Spam and hashbrowns. My daughter ordered Ono #1 breakfast with scrambled eggs, ham and fried rice. Everything came out hot and tasty ... In hindsight, I wish I'd gotten the fried rice, too - it was delish! My hashbrowns were better after I doctored them up with Tabasco and salt/pepper, though. :) I agree with Guy C about the servers having good cop/bad cop attitudes ... Some you're lucky to get eye contact and a grunt out of, that's for sure! We didn't take it personally. :)

Came with family because they are friends with the owners! Breakfast is my favorite meal and this place made me love it. Kept it simple but who could resist Portuguese sausage and fried rice with their breakfast, not me! I am in love with fried rice for breakfast, in love! The food was flavorful and staff great.

Came here early and avoided the line. Got some sweet parking in front! Had to try the Loco Moco x 2. We ordered the classic Loco Moco and the Pork Loco Moco special. Loco Moco - Hamburger + rice + egg over easy + gravy. What's not to like? All were good. The gravy in particular reminded us of Filipino gravy, which sometimes can be a little bit bland and lack some spice to it. That was the case here. Hamburger wasn't too special, didn't do anything magical with beef. But, to their credit, perfectly cooked egg! Pork loco moco - I would say tastier than it's original version. The Kahlua pork was tender and flavorful. Same gravy however. Additionally, came on a bed of fried rice. Great egg. Overall, not too shabby. Check out my review on the Kountry Kitchen for comparison.

The service was very welcoming but we were on the look for a former Ono restaurant- The fried rice as a side dish was the highlight if the meal!! The Tropical pancakes were good but needed a little something to make them delicious!! My wife desperately needed a coffee and it was on the light side, a McDonalds coffee would ve been welcomed at this point!! Again, the servers are hard working but the food needs a little more Hawaiian touch!!

I've been here at least two times in the past and have always had great food. I tried something new this time and was disappointed in the Salisbury steak. It was just a super dry ground hamburger patty with bland gravy. However the fried rice was delicious! And my eggs and toast with home made jam was also yummy! So next visit I won't get the steak again.

Upon our arrival on Kauai, my family and I went out in search for a meal with some local flair to get our short vacation started off right. The caveat was that it HAD to serve hamburgers (thanks dad). We drove for a few minutes into Kapa'a and on the right side of the road, we found exactly what we were looking for: Ono Family Restaurant. They have most everything one might want from a local diner: hamburgers (check - although my dad did wind up getting the meatloaf sandwich instead ... same, same), fries and grilled cheese (for my twin daughters), mahi mahi sandwich (me), teri chicken sandwich (for my bride). Forgot what my mom ordered, but it came with portuguese bean soup - delicious! Everything came out in an acceptable time and all were as promised. YUMMY !!! The service was excellent (VERY friendly and attentive). Although it was slower than I care for (but I'm NOT a patient man by any stretch of the imagination), I realize that it is the neighbor island and things work on SUPER aloha time here. The decor was classic local diner, very eclectic and "homey." Prices were reasonable - not super cheap, but not the budget buster that one might expect on an island catering to tourists. They DO take plastic and even checks I think (local banks only I'm sure). They serve breakfast all day and shaved ice and halo halo outside. Sadly, we didn't get to try out their shaved ice (as we were too full from lunch). Guess that'll have to wait till next time :-(

Pretty good very laid back. Reminds me of diner food back home with a family feel that is specific to Kauai. I'd come here daily if I retired to this place. The tropical shorty is immensely filling and I didn't finish it but wanted too. The hubby got loco moco but wished he'd gotten the Lindsey special for the Spam. Awesome meal decent price and I'm stuffed.

Got here ten minutes before they closed for lunch (breakfast/lunch closes at 2pm). Plenty of seats/booths were available. Open air with slow running fans and we wished they had A/C I ordered their fried noodles without ham with a side of rice. It was decent. Hubby got their gourmet burger which was good as well. They accommodated some customers after 2 pm. Service was slow and the hostess was eager to leave to watch baseball game. Restroom is outside and usually busy due to shaved ice shop where people throng to try their root beer floats.

As a hesitant breakfaster, I usually cringe when the topic of picking a breakfast location comes up. Darling man loves traditional breakfast, and when we yelped diners near us, the descriptions and photos were enough for me to concede that this place was exactly what he wanted. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Kapa'a, Ono is a bustling business with friendly faces and fast service. On our first visit, I ordered the Mahi Mahi burrito, which the waitress told me didn't have egg, but it did ( eating egg makes me have a sad face). Regardless, it also had savory fried rice and avocado inside, and it was actually a pretty solid, albeit pricey breakfast (market price, $14.50). Wonderful man ordered the special with fried rice, eggs, spam and toast, which was accompanied by Auntie's MINDBOGGLINGLY delicious tropical jam. Oh my gosh it's so good. Coffee was a little on the burnt smelling side, and my tea both times was musty and old tasting. On the second visit, darling man revisited his previous order with gusto, and I opted for half a papaya which set me back as much as purchasing a whole papaya at the store across the street ($3.50). It was delicious, but like the burrito, was overpriced. On our second visit we were seated by the owner, to whom we chatted with at length about their shaved ice store attached to the restaurant (see my review of Ono Shave Ice). He was informative, outgoing, and personable, and it was obvious the family is as much a hit with the locals as they are with the visiting tourists. Parking can be a hassle, as well as leaving the parking, due to it being on the main street of Kapa'a, so I'd recommend parking on the side street near the Filipino market or near one of the churches. If I were to return, I'd order the tropical pancakes which looked and smelled pretty dang good, but were much too daunting a portion for me to tackle on Kauai humidity.

Came with several friends. I had the special cherry pancakes. The dried cherries weren't as special as o was hoping. The house made coconut syrup was not something I'll be buying to take home with me either. Swmbo had the Florentine breakfast, tasty but cold. The fresh papaya was good My side of Portuguese sausage was OK. The Manhattan Beach omelet was rated as very good. The bacon avacado omelet plus mushrooms was rated very good along with the hash brown side. Coffee is not their thing, avoid it unless you are in serious need of a watered down caffeine fix

We love coming here every time we come to Kauai. Their food is consistently delicious, and their loco moco and ono egg breakfast dishes are family favorites. Today I tried the Captain's Platter, which was so ono, a nice change of pace. Also, just outside the restaurant is the Ono Shave Ice stand, also a favorite pitstop. Their flavor combinations are pretty good. I love the lilikoi coconut. Can't come to Kauai and not stop by.

It's a family run restaurant so the service will not be the best and everyone who enters this place should be aware of that. It's basically common sense, but the food is really great. For the most parrot does feel like home cooked meal. The food takes a while to come out but it's worth every penny. The price is decent. Do not get juice here but everything else just great.

Thumbs down, I was not impressed with the food or service. For a party of two, we waited for a good thirty minutes before being seated outside. That was okay, but the swarm of flies around us was pretty irritating. The tables were sticky, the place is just dirty. I knew this coming here from my fellow yelpers but Marc's was closed so the Hubs wanted to try this place anyway because we arrived in Kauai starving. Service was unattentive, it took forever for our drinks to come, the waitress walked right past us despite me saying good morning and went over to the table three feet from us to take their drink order. Waited another ten minutes for her to come back to get our drinks, had to get her attention to get our order in and another half hour for food. AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT. I knew it wasn't going to be worth the over rated yelp four star review. The food came out cold, more details below. I barely left a tip because I didn't think it was deserved. I just don't get that Hawaiian home-y feel here, people just want to take your $$$ and move onto the next group. Whatever, I think this place is a rip off with flavorless food. Do not get the guava juice, watered down tremendously... I should have just cracked open a can of Kerns because that would have hit the spot. So the food... Hubs and I both ordered a loco moco (Portuguese and regular) I love this dish and decided since we're in Hawaii, why the heck not?! Sadly, the Hawaiian place we have in Seattle does this dish justice than here. The hamburger was tough, like it was previously frozen, defrosted and frozen again. The gravy was cold, there was gravy skin floating on top. I was too hungry to complain but seriously? How long has it been sitting around? We were starving so I dumped the gravy all over and started to eat... First bite was meh. For food that's barely edible, this place set us back almost $40. My loco moco came with fried rice. Poorly executed, flavorless and didn't look appetizing. Honesty didn't find any specs of eggs, meat, etc. My mama makes fried rice at home, it doesn't need too many toppings but what matters is if there's enough seasoning. It did have zucchini in it which is weird but the rice had no flavor and was hard and tasted old. The Portuguese pork was better than my hub's hamburger. His hamburger tastes very peculiar and he stopped eating four bites in. Mind you, he's not a food waster and I felt bad that he was trying to force himself. Not good at all... Gravy tasted canned, I would save your $$ and find some nice beach front cafe because this is not a good breakfast place.

Love this place, comfort food when away from home. The coffee is the best and coconut syrup is excellent. I always go here when in this area

KALUA PORK LOCO MOCO! It is a must have. My husband and I were over loco mocos from our vacation in Maui, but SO happy we ordered it one more time. The gravy is to die for. I dont know what is in it but I could drink it. You may think that's nasty, but once you try it you will get it. YUM! The pancakes are average and decent. Also, get the Halo Halo for a dessert if you happen to be around the area again. Soooo delicous. Jellies, beans, icy mix, creamy, plus ice cream. Yum yum yum!

With limited breakfasts planned for the trip (we tended to snack in the morning and go right to poke en route to our daily outings), I over-handwringed on the merits of Tip Top vs. Ono vs. Kountry Kitchen. Tip Top was great, and the decision on our final day to go to Ono was made because it was closer to our end of Kapaa. Ono delivered on all breakfast counts - solid coffee, tasty portuguese sausage, bacon, and eggs, and some fluffy tropical pancakes (two-stack was more than enough for me). I rarely use much maple syrup, but I drizzled that warm coconut goodness all the heck over my cakes. I'm not sure a 5-star pancake is possible, at least I haven't had one yet, but I've had more than my share of average pancakes, and Ono's are definitely a cut above.

Went to have breakfast with my mom, ordered hot cocoa, it was warm like warm and taste like metal. Ordered decaf coffee instead and it tastes burnt and like metalworst part was when I got my fresh toast with re-USED butter it looked as if someone stacked their butters on each other and they saw that it was unopened and popped it on my plate.... Gross!!!

Excellent food - creative breakfast combinations in a friendly atmosphere. It is a great spot for visitors and it appears there are plenty of locals who agree.

Classic old style place with the wooden booths, food is excellent. There are a good variety of items to explore on the menu for breakfast so I know it will take more time than what I have here to try them all. Love the fried rice with my steak and eggs. Makes for something different.

Kinda dirty.... Best shave ice we had on the island. Got 4 breakfast burritos on the island. This was by far the best. Service was odd but ok I guess. My wife loves the unexpected avocado garnish in her eggs.

This place is the bomb.com . We went to Kountry Kitchen the day before and thought "meh." Decided to try ono's. Walked in and were seated right away. You know it's going to be good when the locals are there and the menu is extensive. I decided on the breakfast burrito. The bacon, sausage and ham inside was cooked to perfection. The fried rice was delish. My friends had fruit bowls and pancakes that were huge! All local fresh fruit. Yum yum! Portions just right and prices super reasonable. Wish I could eat breakfast here everyday!

Decent home cooked fare. A bit expensive in my book. Check out Poma market next door for something cheap and fast!

This place is okay if you want breakfast, and you're staying nearby. I came around 10:30AM, and it was full. We had a party of 6, and we only had to wait around 20 minutes. I ordered spam, eggs and rice. Yum! I also shared a banana pancake with my husband. Food came out pretty fast. It's connected to Ono Ono Shave Ice, so hit up this place after you eat here.

Came here 3 times each on my 2 trips to Kauai. Seriously yummy breakfast. And the food comes quick!! We (my husband and I) always order the Local Girl and add portuguese sausage in it. Then we order the Scratch Chili and Cheese omelet. All with a side of corned beef hash. And then we split it all!! Large portions, so you definitely feel full!! And you can definitely tell that everything is homemade! Even the corned beef hash. Yum. (Only 4 stars because the service is not great, but the food makes up for it!!)

Honestly the place to go to if you're not looking for a super fancy meal and you're definitely wanting something more than just plain and simple. My friends and I decided to come here for brunch the day after we landed and we had a huge group with us. There were a total of 9 of us that went. When we first walked in, we finally realized that ... we are in paradise. And when we mean paradise, we mean REAL paradise. It's a completely different feel from if we were to go to Honolulu. It gave us a homely mom and pop, laid back type of feeling. On top of that there was a sign on the wall that made us giggle. On that side, it said, "If you are grouchy, irritable, or just plain mean, there will be a $10 charge for putting up with you." We were seated fairly quickly. They sat us at two booths that were adjacent from each other. That way we could still talk with everyone .. it's just there was something separating us in the middle. It's hard to describe so don't mind me haha! My friend and I decided to share an omelette and fresh strawberry french toast. The food was pretty good. The omelette is good but nothing spectacular and memorable about it. Heck, I can't even remember the name of the omelette or what was in it to prove my point. But the french toast as very good. They had this strawberry sauce for it as well as maple syrup on the side for you. The toast was fluffy and it was very yummy to dip it in the strawberry sauce. And I just looooooove strawberries. We had two of our friends order their Kahlua Pork loco moco and they said it was VERY delicious. So perhaps if you go to Ono Family, you could try that out as well! The service was very friendly as well from what I remember. There weren't any problems :) The Ono Family Restaurant is probably one of the better places to visit while on Kauai. And another bonus, they have shaved ice right outside!!

It was ok Liked it better than Kountry Kitchen Ordered the shredded pork loco moco. It comes with 2 eggs of your choice and choice of toast. The shredded pork is mixed with brown rice then topped with the eggs. The gravy is served with it on the side. While it is a very large portion for $11.95, the pork had a slight sour flavor. Also ordered a side of cooked Spam for $4.95. There were 4 large slices. Sampled the coconut banana short stack served with coconut syrup and imitation maple syrup. ..Very good. Service is on the slow side They do come to see if you need anything. I would go back.

Best breakfast food on the island!!! Every time we come to Kauai I always stop in at Ono family and get the macadamia nut coconut pancakes w/fresh coconut and Maple syrup!! It's like nothing you have ever tasted!! You don't want to miss out on these amazing pancakes!!!

Decided to give this a place a try after trying Ono Ono Shave Ice. Great breakfast location. They have a lot of local favorites at their place. Would definitely go back to have local food if I'm ever back in Kapa'a.

Well, it went kinda like this... I had the Captains platter with fresh grilled Ahi, fried rice and scrambled huevos. Mango jam and tartar sauce were on the plate as well. And a couple pieces of toast. If you are looking for the touristy "Hawaiian" experience... Skip this place. If you are looking for a local eatery that local people go to... Come here. The decor is lacking (I liked it), but the homey food more than makes up for it. My service was quick and good as well. I sat out on their lanai. A few flys were buzzing around, but hey... The St. Regis is farther north if you want the white tablecloths and to be called sir/mam.

Good food but service is a bit slow. No a/c and screen doors means some bugs, they seem to be everywhere in Kauai. Servers are split between extremely friendly (our waitress) and efficient/confusingly quiet (everyone else). They will sometimes just walk past or away from you as you speak to them and do things without explanation. Ain't got no time for that, I guess. Just expect it before coming here. Food is solid and tasty. Pork chop, eggs, fried rice all good. The jam is esp fresh. Still, would rather go to Kountry Kitchen for a faster and more pleasant experience with nearly the exact same food.

Amazing tropical pancakes. Aunty Ono's coconut syrup simply cannot be touched or duplicated! Best pancakes I've had so far on the island. Wide variety of choices wether you're in the mood for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a light snack. As far as service, it is a little slow and waitstaff could stand to be a little more friendly. That's the only reason I've given it 3 stars. All in all, I'll still return for the ono food!

    (3)
  • Wayne S.

Ate here 3 times while on Kaua'i, so I'll give it 3 stars. Probably best for breakfast, although that's all I tried. Huge menu. Interesting variety of ingredients and omlet types. Large portions. Fresh fruit smoothies. Great place to fuel up for an adventurous day. Friendly staff. Aloha!

One of the more terrible restaurant experiences I've ever had! Granted, a family member worked here for years and I've heard reasonably okay things about the food here. So my hubsand I decided to stop by for breakfast. The food portion-wise is excellent, we ordered within 20 mins. The staff were INITIALLY friendly. But, all that was foreshadowed in our overall experience... (1) Hubs ordered the Portuguese Susage Loco Moco and got Shredded Pork Loco Moco that was intensely vinigary. (2) I first ordered the Lox and Bagel but was told by the host/waitress that they were out (so it was misleading that it remained on chalk board), so I asked for the Ham Omelette with hash browns instead, with a side order of toast. When my plate arrived, I noticed that it came with fried rice...we waved the hostess/waitress over and she looked at us with irritation when I explained I had ordered hash browns as well as my toast. She took my plate and promptly returned, unceremoniously placing it in front of me with no apology for the mistake or her attitude. (3) The waitress came by with my toast and informed my husband that his meal included toast as well. When he said he would like his toast, the waitress said, "Going be awhile, you don't wanna share this toast instead?", indicating my side order. He said "no" and she returned approximately 10 mins later with four pieces of burnt toast. (4) We were checked on once by our waitress in the 40 mins we ate breakfast, asking us if we needed anything else and walked away before I finished my sentence. (5) The hostess/waitress came by our table with our bill with us still in the middle of eating. Due to our dining experience, my husband and I decided to tip 10%, which we still felt was too generous. Within seconds of signing the bill, the hostess/waitress swooped in and claimed the check...while I was still having my coffee. The hostess/waitress must've been upset over the tip amount because she refused to acknowledge or said "thank you" and/or "goodbye" to us as we were leaving. It's primarily the rudness and lack of customer service skills of the staff that kills the dining atmosphere. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Sad, because the food really isn't that bad...

Worst experience of our trip Wife ordered Ono #2 and they forgot the toast did the eggs wrong and served her home fries instead of rice. Server saw us once for water another for coffee and then 37 minutes for the food which was not good. At all. Now still waiting for the check because we are running way behind. Also. My da boss scramble was not good. At all How does this place get good review.

Best breakfast on the Island!!! Come early if you can or relax for a bit of a wait. Always worth the wait if there is one. Family owned and operated. Great service!

Food was decent. They are not the friendliest in terms of service. It was like they were rushing us out. We still had half a plate of food left and they quickly cleared our plate by putting another plate over it before we had a chance to tell them we were not done yet. We were still finishing that plate and left hungry. That made the meal unpleasant. All they had to do was ask if we were done and obviously they didn't care that we were still eating. Most restaurants will ask if you are done before taking half a plate of uneaten food away.

Unfortunately, this review comes in months after our experience here, so some of the details are fuzzy. Crazy how busy life can get, especially after getting married! On that note, the wife and I were here on the beautiful island of Kauai during our honeymoon back in September. We stopped in to Ono Family Restaurant for breakfast on our way up to the North side of the island for a day drive to explore the island. We had not previously planned to stop at Ono, but we knew there were several restaurants in this part of town (known as Kapaa), so we started driving and found Ono on the way. Overall, this was a decent meal, but there were several things that kept me from rating this higher (unlike many of our other meals in Hawaii). By the point we arrived here, we were both starving, and unfortunately there was a wait that seemed longer than it should have been. Guess that speaks to the quality of the place, but I also kind of felt that service was overall kind of slow and was preventing us from getting seated sooner (one guy even got so fed up with waiting for someone to take his payment he got up and came to the register so they could pay and leave). After hearing/seeing so much about the infamous loco moco dish on the island, I finally decided that I was going to try the dish here. For those that don't know, this is essentially a deconstructed burger; you get rice, burger patties, fried eggs, and beef gravy. Sadly, the taste of this dish did not live up to my expectations...not sure if this is because Ono did a poor job of making it or if it's just not the dish for me. As hungry as I was, though, I finished most of it and of course the incredible Hawaiian coffee helped wash it down! My wife was even hungrier than me, and sadly was brought to tears when she realized the dish she ordered had meat in it (she is vegetarian)! This is not entirely their fault since we didn't mention the fact that my wife is vegetarian to the server, however, when ordering it the dish sounded vegetarian friendly (it was a similar dish to mine with fried rice and eggs, toast, etc. the rice had pork in it) Sadly, she ate the parts of the dish she could, but was left unsatisfied. To their credit, when the folks at Ono realized my wife was vegetarian and couldn't eat her dish, they offered to bring something else out for no charge, but at that point we were both ready to get a move on, so we paid and left.

Stopped in 10 minutes before closing and they didn't turn us away. We ordered a bacon avocado burger, western burger, grilled cheese combo, which all came with fries, and onion rings. -Fries were good, fried well and not greasy. -Burgers where good with big pieces of avocado (as applicable) and fresh produce. -best of all where the onion rings because the batter is like a donut-type... yummy Prices are reasonable too.

This is a hole in the wall mom and pop type restaurant. The restaurant is very simple, no AC and it was very hot! But the food made up for it. I only have one complaint, which ruined my experience here. I ordered the breakfast burrito. The waitress waited 30 min to tell me that they ran out of tortilla. The disappointing part was the poor customer service. There was no "sorry" or "here's what I can do for you instead." Had there been any of that, I wouldn't have such a negative comment to make. They obviously don't understand customer service and the fact that customer service drives business these days. Instead I ordered Eggs Hash which was very delicious. The prices are very reasonable. I would give this place a 2nd chance, but if my experience is anything like this, I will totally count this place out!

So we decided to try this place for breakfast because of the great reviews and our last trip we only got around to kountry kitchen....but at Ono... To start, the coffee was horrible and it had a wierd flavor kind of like mildew old soapy water, we asked for a new cup, same flavor. The banana coconut Mac pancakes were not only burnt looking and burnt tasting but they were had a super rubbery texture and barely any flavor. They were even difficult to cut with a fork. Prob the worst pancakes I have ever had!! I was so looking forward to amazing pancakes but I am super sad that these were a huge fail. :( Also got the hash browns and they were just ok. my hubby's omelette was good according to him. So...my hubby finished his omelette and I left my food and we went straight to kountry kitchen.

I was looking for "some place, any place" to eat breakfast and saw this spot. A family restaurant? How bad could it be? You can't screw up breakfast right? I was expecting your standard bacon and eggs plate. That is NOT what I got! This place is surprisingly awesome. I got one of the specials- scrambled eggs, sliced hot links, cheese, jalapeño and cilantro. Tortillas and sour cream on the side plus a slice of papaya. I also had some pineapple juice. Perfect balance of ingredients. Really well put together. Highly recommend!

This is NOT a 4 star restaurant at all. I went a lunch time and I had a steak with vegetables and salad. Salad was ok. Steak was pretty bad with no taste and no salt. I asked for a well done steak and it came medium to raw. My husband had gourmet burger and he didn't like also. He said is NOT gourmet and there is no taste. Plus the place looks pretty dirty. Not for me!

Small town, hole in the wall feel. Can use a little cleaning and a little more of that Aloha hospitality. Crowds of people waiting will tell you that this is one of the best spots on Kuhio... The food was pretty good, but small in portion. I'm just not used to eating in Hawaii and being served a perfect scoop shaped ball of rice. When I see Ono, I picture Ono food and lots of it! 3.5 stars for the food... We were seated off to the side, behind a corner. So you would have to make two turns to see us or our table and I believe they forgot about us... after close to 15 mins we actually had to seek any waitress to take our order. Despite that, the food was good and didn't stop a 2nd visit from half of the group!

Went here with my aunt for breakfast. I have been here a few times, this was my aunts second time. Very cute place, kind of like a homey mom and pop place. They were not too busy and we were seated right away. Friendly staff, which is always a plus. Good selection of food dishes to choose from on the menu and on the chalkboard, where specials are listed. My aunt ordered the Loco Moco (rice w/2 hamburger patties & 2 eggs, your style w/gravy on top) and I ordered the "Viva Mexico" (egg, cheese and chorizo) omelet, scoop of fried rice (comes with the omelet - other choices were toast or hash browns) and a side of sourdough toast. Our order came out from the kitchen in a good amount of time. My aunt enjoyed her dish as I did mine. The waitress came by to refill our coffee and ask how everything was. It was good. Both dishes were delicious and filling. The waitress brought the check and I gave her my card to pay. When they are busy, customers usually have to get up and pay at the register. I will definitely be back again.

This place has so many breakfast options, it's bound to please any party with different tastes. What we ordered: - Eggs ono - basically an eggs benedict; I really liked their hollandaise sauce - Asparagus omelet - this had spinach and cheese in it as well. There were a lot of stems of asparagus which wasn't the best, but it was still tasty. This was also a special so I don't know how often they offer it. - Manhattan omelet (?) - I can't remember the exact name but it had bacon, avocado, cheese, sour cream, salsa and it was delicious! The service is no frills, prompt and friendly. They get very busy so there may be a wait if you arrive after 8am and the parking may get tight. But it's worth it!

Stopped in here because of all the reviews that were given about this place. The restaurant itself is a nice little haven for good American (little Hawaiian) breakfast. Their pancakes are fluffy and well flavored. That coconut syrup/sauce that comes with it though ... out of this world! The Loco Moco was ok (Patty little dry, nothing special with the gravy). Their island boy omelet was also quite tasty! Seasoned and stuffed with the right amount of ingredients and a good balance of flavors with their sausage. The Loco Moco was a little disappointing and that's why they are docked. Some of the servers are also a little negligent, but the fact that it's probably the aloha community spirit made it ok. Overall, solid place. Nothing spectacular (except that coconut sauce). Definitely worth the pit stop. Save some room for the Ono ice stand outside though!

$11 breakfast plate with Mahi Mahi instead of bacon/sausage/ham with my usual eggs, toast, and potatoes...groovy! I thought the filet could've been a bit larger, see photo. Slower service, but that's cause everyone's on Hawaiian time.

01.17.15 with one other around 12:15pm Got seated right away. I ordered the fish sandwich and Aloha Smoothie and he had the Ono #2 a coffee. got our drinks right away but waited a while for our meals. The Smoothie was warm eh. The staff didnt seem to friendly, maybe an off day? My fish sandwich and fries were just ok - no complaints but small for almost $10. Ono #2 was 2 eggs with choice of meat and rice - well he only got 1 egg and chose Portuguese sausage which he only got 2 small pieces and a scoop of rice. it was like kids meal for almost $10. Yes, we checked the bill because we saw there was an Ono #1 that came with 1 egg, but we did get charged for the Ono#2. we are not ones to make a big fuss in the restaurant but we were so disappointed and we had to go else where to get another meal.

Very cheap, very family-friendly, very awesome. This place is a locals paradise. We came here to meet up with some friends for lunch, and were pleasantly surprised! This is an old-fashioned mom-and-pop diner. You can tell they take pride in their food by the way it's prepared and presented. I'd highly recommend skipping out on the hotel continental and roll the dice with this locals place. It's way better quality food, and gives a nice homey feel at that too. Only weird part was once we paid, they were trying hard to hurry us out. Being a server myself, I understand how annoying campers are. But they were definitely clearing plates that weren't finished and drinks as well. I found it a bit comical more than rude though. Definitely just get in, eat, and get out! Haha. We're definitely coming back here again before we leave the island. And you should too!

Island style feel, ambiance, and leisurely meal. Be ready to take your time when coming here for breakfast or brunch, and welcome the local experience. Tried my first loco-moco here yesterday for New Year's Day Brunch and savored Kyra's Portuguese Pork Loco-Moco with two eggs over fried rice. Yummy!

Just a little hole in the wall that looks like a 60's flash back, but the food was outstanding. I had a hamburger with a side green salad. The meat was Kauai beef, generous patty, and more than filling with accompanying fresh tomato slice and lettuce. The side salad was fresh, local grown with shredded carrots and fresh tomato's. We will definitely be coming back.

We had a lunch on Sunday so the place was pretty empty. The windows were open and he road noise was a bit disturbing. The good was OK. My mushroom burger was done OK. But my wife's Susie Q was tough and thick sliced not thin as the board said. Th staff was nice as friendly but it operated on Hawaii time. Prices were average but not worth it. I'd find some where else if you want cheeper food.

5 star ono grinds based on our first visit, and coming back again before we leave! Love the local island feel to the place. Ono Family Restaurant is a fitting name. They were serving breakfast and lunch, so we got something from each. Local Boy- amazing! Portuguese sausage, kimchee, and cheese omelette with a side of fried rice - just mouth watering deliciousness on a plate. I wish the picture did it justice for the tastiness inside. Fresh strawberry pancakes- cooked with strawberries inside and fresh cut on top with a side of strawberry cream. It didn't need it but was also served with maple syrup and coconut syrup. Friendly service, accepts credit cards. A few flies outside on the lanai so we sat inside by the window. Next time we're going to try the Local Girl and Portuguese pork loco moco. Aloha!

Our favorite place for breakfast on Kauai! The mac nut/banana pancakes with coconut syrup are my favorite. Servings are HUGE. Ono Ono Shave Ice is attached to the restaurant and is the BEST shave ice on the island, so you can knock out two birds with one stone.

Based on lunch, the food was just okay. I shared the the fish and chips with my mom and the portion was perfect for 2. (There were 3 pieces of fish and french fries.) The fish came out piping hot and crispy. They even had malt and vinegar! Only 2 stars, because: - Service was soooo slow - Sat outside and the tables were really gross. - No pen to sign in to wait for a table (Encountered a very rude woman, who accused me of trying to cut the line, when I just wanted to put my name down on the clipboard. It's not my fault she didn't have a pen to put her name down. The restaurant really should have had a pen tied to the clipboard.) I would say skip the restaurant and get the shave ice instead.

We met up with friends here for a few days in a row until we decided we had better try other places out. Breakfast is a big deal for my group, so we were hesitant to switch it up. Especially after trying their Macadamia nut pancakes. I still think about them. Really, really good. Also, I had the kimchi and sausage omelette, LOVED it. I remember stealing sips of someone's fresh fruit juice and bites of my brother's fish. Excellent. I love it when there's too much selection to make up your mind right away. The waitresses didn't bat an eyelash when we had additions to our party, just went with it. There seemed to be many locals here, which made it feel like a family restaurant. We did not mind that the service was a bit slow, we were fully prepared to adhere to Hawaiian Standard time. They kept our coffee cups full and we were happy to wait.

The omelet I ordered sounded good (artichoke and Parmesan cheese) but turned out to be eggs surrounding the Costco artichoke and Parmesan cheese DIP that I buy for parties. Bummed!

Nice family restaurant and onolicious breakfast! Kona mocha is yummy and Egg Florentine is a must have. Price is reasonable than other nearby touristy places. Use the Kauai coupon book and get additional discount! Support locals!

Great food and pretty good service. Loved the loco moco with shredded pork instead of hamburger for a change. The guava pineapple jam was tasty too!

I honestly did not expect this restaurant to be as good as it was. It literally has something for everyone and healthy options to. The hubby got the mahi mahi burger and I got the ahi fish plate. We both loved our starters. I got salad and it was super Fresh and loaded with sprouts which is a nice touch, plus the papaya dressing was delicious! He got Portuguese bean soup which was super flavorful. My fish was little on the overdone oily side but that's honestly being too picky it was pretty good overall. The steamed veggies were good but kind of overdone. He loved his burger and the onion rings and French fries were also extremely good.

Best breakfast ever! Really. When my husband and I got to ONO's we thought we'd be waiting for at least 30 min., not the case; we sat down quickly and had coffee shortly after. I ordered the local boy because I've heard so much about how good Portuguese sausage is, and my husband ordered the tropical stack pancakes. The food was out quick despite how busy the place was, and piping hot. It was wonderful, the fried rice that came with my omelette had bacon in it! Portions were very big and just..... Ahh we were going to go snorkeling, but after this breakfast we had to go back to the hotel and nap....

Great food, price, service! Recommend local boy and Portuguese loco moco. Best prices we've seen on our Kauai trip thus far. Service was fast. Large portions.

  • Brittany C.

Great breakfast and lunch. Cute decor. Good service... But the best part about this place is the shave ice bar they open out back in the afternoon. BEST SHAVE ICE ON THE ISLAND. I know, I've tried 90% of them.

  • Oleg H.

Great service. Ok food. Crap coffee. food - ONO coffee - oohhh noooo Pretty good locomoco, and very good service. But the coffee was soooo forgettable and tasted plasticky. This may be fine outside of state of HI but considering that there are several local growers on the Island - i just can't not take a huge exception to this (yes that was a double negative, and yes i know i did it.). As a whole the restaurant is at least a 3 star, and has potential to be even better but the coffee thing is just too much - it should be their strength instead its a huge drawback.

Great breakfast place in downtown historic Kapaa! I love finding these local diner places in Hawaii. They have an extensive menu of comfort breakfast entrees PLUS specials. I tried the mahi mahi eggs Benedict, which was ok but the papaya was SO fresh and sweet! But I loved having over easy eggs with fried rice and the largest slices of Portuguese sausage-- a true hearty breakfast! But you need to be there early, especially on weekends. We ordered around 7:45 am and by the time our food was ready they were running out of fish for their specials! They also served the best shaved ice outside! It is a local/dive place so don't expect the Ritz Cartlon, but it's clean and down home. Conveniently located next to the Pono Kai.

  • Travis A.

Ate here once for lunch and once for breakfast. This place is really pretty tasty despite looking a little rundown. The mahi Mahi burger was very good and their fries tasted fresh. Tropical pancakes and the omelets were also very good. Large menu with good selection of standards and some local flavor. The shave ice stand was also very good! Second best I had on the island (best was Jo Jo's in Waimea).

  • Jason F.

No frills place with good breakfast at reasonable prices and friendly service. Make sure to try the Portuguese sausage!

  • Tony S.

Was not very impressed with service or food. Meat was overcooked. Waitresses were not very attentive. Hard to get their attention even when the place was slow. Pancakes were decent though. Not likely to return. Would recommend going elsewhere. Overall food was nothing special and a bit pricey. Take your money somewhere else.

This was a last minute choice that we felt safe about while shopping in kapa'a. It was four stars on yelp, so what could have gone wrong? Answer: everything food related. The water was ok , I guess, but the iced tea smelled like sewage. The Pepsi (so it said on the menu, but the waitress told me it was a coke) was probably some knock off three-liter bottle soda - it tasted wrong. The food was so unbelievably bad. Grilled cheese for the kids did not have melted cheese - it was mostly semi-congealed shreds of something. The burger patty really tasted like a frozen patty that was microwaved and then boiled. The interior was gross and filthy. Maybe this is not the best lunch spot if you're sober? I know all places have their detractors but, seriously, avoid this place, especially if you're on vacation. Time is too precious to eat here.

Good prices and not too bad of food. I gave it a four because I was comparing it to a lot of the the local food there which was pretty bad!

We eat breakfast here almost every day we're on Kauai because you can't beat the food and service. Plus we love the funky Kauai atmosphere. Papaya comes with almost all the plates - don't forget to squeeze the lemon wedge on the papaya, makes it bright!

    (5)
  • Veronica B.

Hollandaise on errrthang... Hey I'm certainly not complaining! I made my new Hubz take me back for breakfast a second time because I couldn't stop thinking about that bacon, cheddar, avocado omelette with a side of hollandaise sauce! And uh yeah, its complimentary folks! The place is run down and family run. Just the way I like my breakfast joints. Apparently the shave ice stand on the side of the building is supposed to be one of the best on this side of Kauai.

    (5)
  • Cherlene W.

I love this place! The tropical shorty with a side of Spam and warm coconut syrup. Warm coconut syrup instead of sugar in the coffee---yum! All the Auntie's in the place are awesome, the fried rice is really quite good. Don't get me wrong, it is a divey-family-owned-and-run breakfast diner. Good food and great people!

    (4)
  • Joann H.

Standard breakfast. pretty good. HUMONGOUS coconut macadamia nut pancakes with slivered bananas and whip cream on top. Coffee was solid too.

  • Dorothy X.

This was my favorite breakfast place in Kauai. Everything I ate was heavenly, and the prices weren't that bad at all. I loved the local boy, which was a kimchi/portuguese sausage omelette that comes with a side of really tasty fried rice. Order another side of spam, and enjoy the best Hawaiian breakfast ever. If you want something healthier, try the papaya with some lemon squeezed on top. It's the freshest thing you'll ever have. The macadamia pancake was amazing as well, since it was so fluffy and melted in your mouth with the coconut syrup drizzled on top. After you stuff yourself silly here, go right outside to get a giant shaved ice for dessert!

    (5)
  • Lilah D.

This is probably my favorite breakfast spot on the island or at least on Kapa'a. The portuguese sausage and pancakes are so delicious. The service is a little slowish but, the homestyle Hawaiian cooking is worth the wait. The servers are pleasant and I felt like I guest in someone's home rather than a restaurant especially when I walked in the squeeky screen door. Mahalo Ono Family Restaurant!

    (4)
  • Doug T.

An unimpressive diner experience with local fare and a lacking wait staff. I have nothing bad to say about our food... However I also have nothing great to say either. It's a shame, because the shave ice stand connected to the restaurant is probably the best on the island.

  • Norm S.

We have been here 11 days and had breakfast here five of them. Not like us as we usually go for variety. This place is that good. This is a nice little local hole in the wall with amazing food and service that is great. All locals serving with an atmosphere that earns the word family in their name. The prices are low by Kauai standards. The fried rice breakfasts and the tropical pancakes with coconut syrups house made are the high points. Don't miss this one

    (5)
  • Rick R.

We always go here for a breakfast in Kauai, but this time the service and atmosphere wasn't the same. The coffee tasted terrible and the breakfast was so so. We always liked this place but for some reason this year it was one of the worst meals we had. The staff was always friendly but this time cold.....

    (1)
  • Sim B.

No decor or ambiance, no a/c. We waited a really long time for our waitress to come take our order. I ordered the kyra's Portuguese sausage and fried rice loco moco which on the board says comes with two eggs. It came out with fried rice and pork but no eggs. When I approached the waitress about it she stared at the board for a while and seemed confused. I proceeded to show her a picture of other people's orders of the same item on yelp and she just said "oh I'll ask them to make you two eggs then." No apology, no explanation, and by te time the eggs came out the rest of the food was cold. I would not recommend this place. Food was bland, best part was the 1/2 sunrise papaya I ordered on the side. It left much to be desired.

    (2)
  • James B.

We love this place. So authentic to what Kapaa is. The eggs/hash is outstanding and the slice of papaya was mouth watering. The pineapple/papaya marmalade is homemade and so delicious. Definitely worth it

    (5)
  • Jon S.

Don't miss this place. Ono's is certainly not overrated. They make a damn good breakfast, and I only wish they were open later for dinner. Perfect place to grab a bite to eat on the way out towards Lihue/Waimea. The two things you can't miss (and are options with most meals) are the fried rice and the papaya?pineapple? marmalade/jelly. The fried rice is made with stickier rice as opposed to Chinese style fried rice, and is delicious. Seriously, I wish I had ordered a huge bowl of that fried rice. The jelly is (I assume) house made and seriously transformed plain toast into something magical. The service wasn't the best I've ever had, and the rest of the food was pretty standard. But the fried rice and that magical jelly alone are worth the trip.

  • Nisa A.

Best local breakfast joint. Makes you feel like your a local when your there. We enjoyed pancakes with coconut syrup, Portuguese pork loco moco, and ahi Benedict. Need to go back for breakfast again before we leave. It's everything you you expect from a good honestly Hawaiian food and folks.

    (5)
  • M N.

This place is totally overrated! The service is horrible...you can tell they hate tourists. The loco moco is not worthy of mention other than is this cardboard with gravy? Overpriced. Better to find a local hole in the wall for actual good food.

    (2)
  • Tran N.

I love the casual feel of this restaurant. The decor seems a bit random and mismatched. The menu is pretty extensive with different types of breakfast foods. We tried the banana coconut macadamia pancakes and the kim chi omelet. Both were quite simple but tasty dishes. So with the casual feel , the service is also very informal and quite frankly, slow. I know there is Hawaiian time, but this place seems to be extra slow. If you have time id say this place is worth a visit. Definitely not a good idea if you're hoping to dine in a reasonable amount of time.

The food is okay, the prices are alright, and the service is okay (depending on who you get). I've been here a total of three times, and got something different each time. This time, I got the Lindsey Special, consisting of fried rice, eggs, and lup cheong (chinese sausage). I wish I did not get this, the fried rice had zucchini in it (I have NEVER seen fried rice with zucchini in it, until I came here). I dislike zucchini - so much so, that I picked each piece of it out of the rice - painful. It's like it was supposed to substitute for green onion, well, let me tell ya, I was expecting green onion, until I bit into it and it was mushy. SMH...not helping their cause was the fact that the lup cheong was HARD! It was like biting into rubber - that was painful on my teeth as well as the knife that had a hard time cutting it. Still SMH. I'm giving them three stars because I've been here twice before this last time, and both those times the food was good (pancakes and omelette). If you're a local, and you like green onion in your fried rice, I suggest you stick with the pancakes and omelettes which they are very good at doing. And, the wait staff the last two times were really good too. Another plus for this establishment is that they are cheaper than the other place up the street.

3 yrs late: Was suggested this place from the hotel's concierge. First time in Kaua'i and I wanted something good. From the outside, kinda skeptical eating here but the people who work here were very nice. The food was awesome! I had spam and rice and their fried rice was delicious!!! First time having Portuguese sausage and it was good. I LOVE THEIR KONA COFFEE!! Hubby loves their pancakes and French Toast. He liked that the syrups were warm when they brought it out. Me and my hubby came here for breakfast through out our whole vacation here in Kaua'i... Will definitely come back here again when I come back to the island..

I love good food but it wasn't so when I took my family to eat lunch at 11:30 on Labor Day. First, A/C would be nice. It was very warm inside even hotter outside. I ordered the Tuna Melt on wheat but it was so so, nothing I would recommend. Wife ordered hamburger steak, my grand nephew the grilled cheese, and grand niece fish and chips. I sampled all the food and it was just that, sustenance and nothing more. I wouldn't even say it was tasty. This was our first time at the restaurant and will probably be the last.

Had to have the kyra loco moco before I went back home. Ran out of fried rice which is much better than the white rice. Can't bring the homemade jam or syrup home since can't be out of frig longer than 8 hrs :(

My husband and I dined at this local spot for breakfast. Coffee was excellent. We each got the short stack with eggs. Quick turn around time. My husband tried their coconut syrup, which he loved. Definitely recommend.

We stopped here for breakfast on our honeymoon and it was everything I hoped we would find on our trip. Being a Saturday morning we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table which is probably about normal and totally worth it. I had the Moco and my wife had the tropical pancake stack, both were flawless and our service was great. I would go back and have recommended Ono Family Restaurant to others.

We came here upon arrival from a long day of travel from Boston and grabbed breakfast before check-in. Very low-key atmosphere, which is exactly what we were after. We all loved our meals which included the pancakes, captains plate and another omelette. The portions are HUGE, none of us finished even though it was all delicious.

    (5)
  • Nicole B.

The corned beef hash, and poached eggs were really good. The coconut syrup was just okay. It did take a while to get the food and the atmosphere isn't the best, but overall the food was really tasty, which IMO is most important.

Always come here for breakfast! I got the Ono Burrito this time around, with fried rice! It was good. Food took some time to get out, but that's okay. It was well worth the wait.

  • Renee D.

Delicious, generous portions, and superior prices to other breakfast spots in the area. The open-air setting is the cherry on top of a great meal. The Captain's Platter with mahi mahi, eggs, hashbrowns (best I've ever had!), and papaya was more than I could eat and divine. We were impressed to pay so little for so much. We will be back to try the fresh strawberry French toast.

    (5)

Awesome food and awesome prices. The mahi-mahi sandwich was awesome and the onion rings were delish! Only thing was the ice tea didn't taste great...but otherwise...a great experience.

  • Alter K.

Such nice people and great food. A large selection of eggs Benedict - didn't know some of the varieties even existed. We had the florentine eggs Benedict - really fresh spinach and tasty delicate hollandaise sauce. We also tried the loco moco, but the toast with homemade jam was the standout of that dish. We totally missed the specials board in the back of the restaurant - be sure to check it before diving into the menu - it looked to have some yummy choices as well.

    (4)
  • Xi L.

Food is ok, not spectacular but decent for the price. The only issue I had with is the slow serving time. It took more than 40 minutes for good to make it to the table, and another table beside me ordered first but still didn't get their food after almost an hour.

    (3)
  • Charles D.

We've been coming here every time we come to Kauai. Don't eat too late 'cause you won't be able to eat dinner later. I had the Portuguese Sausage Loco Moco with fried rice. I hadn't realized that I was hungry. Finished the whole plate. My wife was amazed. She had the Chorizo omelet with hash browns. ONO!! on both plates. Fresh ingredients and friendly service. What more could you ask for?

    (5)
  • Rob B.

We have been coming here for over 10 years, and look forward to at least one breakfast of local grinds. The tropical stack is way ono, though we like without the shredded coconut. The loco moco on fried rice rocks too! Sit on the porch and watch the chicken cross the road, insert joke here!

Not sure how this place got a great rating. The hostess is grumpy and downright rude. The waitress isn't much friendlier. We have been waiting for over 40 minutes for our food. When asking where are food was we were told it's coming. No apologies. Finally the food. No toast that took another 10 minutes. However the people that came in 20 minutes after is got their food in normal time. The food was at best mediocre. My omelette tasted burned. The toast tasted like greasy burgers. Our other meal was blend and Denny's offers food that has more flavor. Over all a total let down.

  • Meredith K.

A recommendation from my girlfriend...we ended up here on the 1st morning of our vacation. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash Omelette - just ok. I had a hard time deciding what to get so I settled on this, poor excuse I know. He ordered the Local Boy - omelette with Portuguese sausage, cheese, kim chee with a side of Fried Rice. His was definitely a must get for your 1st Hawaiian breakfast. It was good, but lacked the kim chee. Overall it's decent but don't necessarily need to come back.

  • Daniel K.

Good local breakfast spot in Kapa'a. They offer a variety of local hawaiian dishes as well as the classics. I had the loco moco twice and both times it didn't disappoint. Only critique would be that the gravy be a bit more savory. Staff is friendly, and we never had to deal with a wait time. The jam they give you for the toast is unreal good, and like everywhere on the island you gotta try the fresh papaya.

    (4)
  • Kaliah C.

Great for breakfast. A friendly, homey place where I got the traditional spam, eggs and rice. The food was good, not anything amazing. I was in town for my wedding and my family and I need a breakfast joint and we all enjoyed the food. Even if I didn't give 5 stars I'd still go back. :)

Wonderful breakfast. Get here early or you will wait a bit. The pancakes are fantastic. I had the coconut/Mac nut/banana pancake with coconut syrup. Yummyx2! I also had the portuguese sausage and eggs which did not disappoint. My son loved his eggs, rice, and bacon with home made jam on toast. My husband had the Kalua pork. Wow! Amazing! The staff is friendly and quick. It's true Hawaiian fare. I would come back for sure.

My husband and I are big fans of the restaurant's shave ice, so we had high expectations of the restaurant when we tried it for brunch today. Unfortunately, we didn't get the experience we hoped to get. The food is good (I'd give it 4 stars), but doesn't seem consistent. Here's what we ordered: Loco Moco - The burger patty was thin, burnt and a little on the dry side. Kyra's Portuguese Pork Loco Moco - a breakfast special option. This blew the regular loco moco out of the park. The pork was flavorful and tender and came with a delicious and healthy serving of fried rice. Both entrees came with a little serving of homemade pineapple papaya jam to spread on our toast. Yummy. :) The service, however, at the front end (the lady at register) was below par and was really a big turn off. Lady, why are you so grumpy??? What happened to service with a smile? Being greeted and seated by a grumpy lady who looks and acts irritated by arriving customers right before a meal and then tosses your menu at you really leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It's enough to make you not want to return. Our actual servers were nicer, but even then there was something a little off about the service...a little rushed and impersonal. Service here gets one, maybe two stars from us. Hopefully we just caught them on a bad day, but we won't be returning to see if anything changes.

Ono Family restaurant , more like Oh-No Thanks, Family Restaurant. We stopped by here as a second choice since our first choice breakfast place was super packed. This place didn't have a wait so we decided to come in. The service was slow and unfriendly. I had the loco moco and it was the worst loco moco that I have ever had. The hamburger meat was really dry, and the gravy wasn't very good. We also had the short stack of the tropical pancakes with the coconut syrup and those were decent. But overall, the food wasn't worth the bad and slow service.

    (2)
  • David C.

I have to say I was definitely disappointed with this restaurant despite the other reviews. The service was marginal at best, the kitchen was extremely slow and we waited over 30 minutes for our meal. When it was delivered the over easy eggs were very runny, the bread tasted stale, the hashbrowns were something like you get out of the frozen food section at the grocery store. I certainly would never come back again and it definitely wasn't worth the wait.

    (1)
  • Julia P.

Great place for a brunch. They have daily specials but also some house staples which are unique and do the job. I had the island boy which was an omelet type dish with kimchi, some strong and rich coffee and some French Toast which I think was made with a blueberry bagel. Fast service, friendly environment, nice crowd noise...how can you go wrong with a brunch anyways?

    (4)
  • Josh C.

Polite service, and good food. Not spectacular, but definitely a solid breakfast. Fruit cup was fresh and generous. Tomatillo omelette was the highlight with a good portion of avocado and tasty tomatillo sauce. The hashbrowns were mushy, and not memorable. Good environment for a family breakfast.

  • Art P.

Had a good "local" omelet with Portuguese sausage and chee. My wife had a pretty decent tropical pancake stack with really tasty coconut syrup. The coffee was almost undrinkable, even by diner standards. All in all, a decent local joint, but not sure it's worth seeking out if it's out of the way.

    (3)
  • Fernando B.

We had a hamburger and a fish for lunch, the hamburger was not good and the fish didn't have taste. The staff was ok, but the food wasn't a good, we didn't have a good experience. Definitely is a place that I am not come back again.

This stand is located/connected to the Ono Family restaurant right on the main drag so the review shall only reflect the shaved ice. I am reminded of my childhood in hot and humid Houston where an old mom n' pop shop served shaved ice only a few blocks away! I would save up all my pennies and hope to find loose change under the sofa cushions to come up with $2 for a cup of strawberry brain freeze. Anyways, I digress. For only three bucks, you will have your choice of colored syrups to top on your mountain of snow in a flowerly shaped cup. Also you can add on their sweet beans(?) and/or lychee on the bottom of the cup for a buck more or for two toppings, a buck and a half. They will then ask if you want sweet cream on top and naturally it's a "hell yeah!!" The sweet cream really is just condensed milk but without it, your treat is not complete. Refreshing and perfect to cool you down on your way to or from the beach. Just do it!

I can't speak for the food here- it did look delicious, but we didn't get a chance to eat because the service was atrocious. My husband and I were waved into a booth by the woman manning the register, then we sat for 10 minutes with no service. (The restaurant wasn't even that busy and there were multiple people working.) I finally stopped a waitress to ask for water and menus, and she barely acknowledged me before disappearing for another 5 minutes then returning with menus but no water. She didn't even look and us or say a word as she flung them on the table, so we left immediately.

Local Style Hangover Cure The perfect recipe to cure a hangover Mix the din of early morn conversations A pinch of slowly awakening yet dulled senses A dash of plush cushions that capture the weight of a long night The scent of toast stimulates concentration, bright yellow yolks plug the whirlpool once spinning wildly. I need medicine!

  • Vince L.

3 stars for the food. I would bump it up to 3.5 because of the friendly staff. I had the chicken breast with boiled vegetables and fries. The chicken had very simple flavor--maybe seasoned salt--but was not bad. The vegetables had some Asian varieties mixed in, making it a tad more interesting. The best part was probably their fries. They were thin and crispy. As for the burger, it was decent and met expectations. It wasn't fancy or anything but was a good value.

    (3)
  • Tim R.

They have a sign that rude or obnoxious guests will be charged an extra $10 but it's a shame that doesn't apply to service. Didn't get what I ordered the first or second time and when I decided to just eat what was presented before me I was quite disappointed. Nothing, not one thing, was delivered as we asked or was delicious. Breakfast might be better... How can you mess up eggs? Good luck.

Love that this is a locally owned and operated! We always appreciate their efficient service and fresh food. Just read another reviewer Oleg H saying the coffee is not great (too funny OH). We certainly hope this is not the case when we come. If a breakfast place has bad coffee that would be disappointing to say the least. Will come back and comment.

My husband and I came for breakfast and shared Da Boss omelet. It was okay. Really watery. Big enough for the both of us. Friendly staff. Quick service. Decent prices.

Was the only breakfast place open on christmas morning outside the resort. Wait time about 15 mins. Service was pretty quick and friendly. I got the french toast special. It had raisins and apples and mac nuts in the bread! Was sooooo good! Hubby had the Ono meal. Fried rice eggs and bacon and toast. He enjoyed it. Definitely a must visit if near the east.

This place is awesome :) the staff is friendly, the fruit is fresh and the food is....bomb.com! Had the spinach, artichoke, Parmesan omelette and it was delicious! I highly recommend this place for breakfast if you're in the area

Friendlier service and much better food than Kountry Kitchen. Also 30% cheaper than KK. They aren't fast but we didn't find them slow like other reviewers. Frankly, if you're on a schedule you should probably make breakfast for yourself.

If you're looking for a small local place to get some food, this is a great option. The service was good, food was okay, and it was affordable. I had Portuguese style pork, which was really flavorful. Steamed rice was plain but good and the steamed veggies were cooked well. The brown gravy didn't have much flavor, but was okay with the rice. Overall, a great place for a quick lunch stop.

Ono's is our breakfast sanctuary - we rarely miss a morning here when we're on Kauai. To begin, it's always their simply divine coffee, followed by one of their OUTSTANDING omelettes, fresh fruit on the side (more on this below), and wheat toast. Or, if we're feeling especially hoggish, we get their ginormous pancake stacks. Really...beware, these cakes are XXL! My favorite is their macadamia nut pancakes with their coconut syrup...good golly Miss Mele, they're heaven in floppy disc form. As good as all the above truly is, my personal favorite menu item at Ono's is the fresh fruit cup. Sound a little elementary? Listen, I'm from Utah where a "fresh fruit cup" side consists of 17 mealy white chunks of what I assume is cantaloupe, perhaps an old red grape or two, and if you're really lucky you may get a triangle of the most flavorless variety of apple ever...the red delicious. Well, NOT on Kauai, my little friends...and certainly not at Ono's! Their fruit cup comes loaded with fresh Hawaiian banana slices, pineapple chunks, and - my favorite fruit on this here planet...PAPAYA. Papaya! Oh, how I love it! I'm confident that this is one of the only remaining fruits that came directly from the Garden of Eden. We have always had very friendly service at Ono's...but it took us a couple of visits to really figure out what is meant by the term "Island time." Anyone who comes to Ono's expecting snappy service will be sorely disappointed and probably frustrated. These folks should probably just get back on a plane and leave the island as soon as possible. More than any other populated/tourist-driven Hawaiian island, Kauai is the epitome of Island Time. And Ono's is local owned and operated...which means; you may be seated quickly if there's no wait, but the rest of the service experience at Ono's takes time. Do yourself a favor and find peace with it. Once you do, the whole experience becomes one you'll yearn for back on the mainland. Be sure to sign the guest book on your way in or out. I don't know why; I have never received any mailers or emails from them, but I think they like to read diners' comments and it makes me happy, both to sign it and see others signing it. I love checking it out and seeing from where everyone hails. Island Time: learn it, know it...LOVE IT. At Ono's you'll find it. And the entire experience is exquisite. Trust me. Go, sit, drink the coffee, eat the food. Be happy. Repeat as often as humanly possible.

Great place! Small town, family restaurant feel. It's right off the main road, but it was nice and quiet inside. The staff was super friendly and the food was good enough to convince my girlfriend and I to stop by twice during our 3 day stop on the island. I had the Local Boy for brunch one day. It was a cheese omelet with local sausage and vegetables with a side of fried rice. Got a side of spam too to see if it's really any better in Hawaii. It wasn't, but I can tell you it was some of the best spam I've had. For dinner I had a great chicken dish. (Sorry, this was two months ago and the memory has slipped.) If you're looking for a relaxed, calm place to have a great lunch I definitely recommend Ono Family Restaurant.

This eatery is located along Kuhio highway in Kappa, Hawaii. The eatery is brown from the outside and simply looks old. The parking lot is small....maybe ten parking stalls. The eatery offers an eating area outside along the sideway. Upon entering the eatery there is a squeaky brown door. Right after entering there we were sitting and standing waiting to be seated. I could tell how unorganized the servers were. When you walk in you're required to sign in on a paper and the server will call your name based on your sign in on the list. After feeling as if I were rushing the servers and did not feel welcomed I opted to be acknowledged and a female said something like "you want inside or outside" I said outside is fine. Upon sitting outside, the patio chairs were not clean nor were they all that comfortable. Upon receiving the menu the items were plenty to choose from and after getting the menu about a minute later our server arrived to take our orders with a smile. I ordered an order of French toast. Upon receiving the food, water arrived, but without straws. I asked for straws and minutes later I saw a female pass my table with my straws. She later returned with the straws I asked for. Back to the French toast which looked tasty and was really good. However, upon beginning to eat my toast flies began to come into the area and I thought....disgusting....I had to rush through my meal because of the flies in the patio area. After finishing the meal I waited for a check. The check took a long time and as I stood up...the check came. Upon paying for the meal at the squeaky door...the staff felt rushed by new customers coming into the door and failing to acknowledge them properly by at least saying hello. This place could be passed for something better and with a positive atmosphere.

My fiancee and I stopped in twice during our trip to Kauai to eat breakfast at this restaurant. Small and quaint with that old time family joint feel. Parking is found on the street or in the small connected lot. If people are already waiting when you arrive the lady at the cashier will yell to tell you to write your name on the waiting list with number of people in your party. Once you're seated you can peruse a rather long breakfast menu or lunch (breakfast seems to be what they're known for). The first visit my fiancee and I shared two of their breakfast specials: the breakfast burrito and portuguese pork special (think upgraded loco moco). The breakfast burrito was filled with ham, bacon and a pork link along with the usual fixings and very tasty and just the right amount of food. The Pork special was amazing to say the least. The meat was flavorful and worked perfectly with a over medium egg and fried rice with a little bit of the gravy they provide. This dish was so good my fiancee and I went back and both ordered our own! Definitely give it a try if you like breakfast.

Cute little restaurant. My husband enjoyed the moco loco while I indulged in the banana/coconut/macadamia nut pancakes with coconut. The food was pretty good. We enjoyed the restaurant, but not the 20 min wait to get our check. As were we visiting, we had tours we set up that we had to be at. People who arrived after us were getting their checks and we just couldn't seem to grab the attention of any of the waitresses!

When I was younger during my High school years i worked here one summer because the owner Teri is a good friend of my family, I usually only worked 2 or 3 days a week and all from 6-1:30pm. I've eaten here countless times during my work days and I still continue to eat here whenever I visit home. They really do serve really good breakfast from omelets, hash brown, hot cakes, and pork links. They also serve lunch anything from salads, burgers, sandwiches, and plate lunches. I normally would get is the cup of hot coco with whip cream and their grilled fish for lunch and one of their incredible omelets for breakfast. Price is fairly right and they do give you a lot! The wait can get long because this place is known not just for their food but also there shave ice that's right in front of the entrance. Parking in front is always pack considering it shares it with other stores. If your ever in the neighborhood do try this place for breakfast but be sure to wait because everyone loves it here! I've never tried the shave ice but whenever I pass by there is always a line so it must be good.

So friendly and laid back. We ate here on our first morning on Kauai. I found this great place on Yelp and was super excited to take the family. I had the avocado and bacon omelet, my husband had the chorizo omelet, and both of my girls had the banana pancakes from the kid menu. All 4 dished were awesome and all were huge portions. The staff is very sweet and they are totally engaging in the Aloha spirit. Don't even try to find something healthy here or anything for a small appetite. Just go for it you've worked hard and your on vacation.

This is our favorite breakfast spot in Kauai! It's got a nice homey feel and the food never disappoints. My usual is the Ono #2 with Portuguese sausage and fried rice. Never knew mixing fried rice with egg yolk could be so delicious. And their homemade pineapple-papaya jam is amazing. DH always gets the Tropical stack - banana macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup. Soooooo goooood!

We had breakfast: good french toast, a tomatillo & avocado omelette, and a breakfast-type burrito. Unlike many reviewers state, we had no wait at all, and the service was friendly but a little inattentive. (Hard to get that second cup of coffee, etc.) It's so close to where we're staying (a quick walk from Pono Kai) that I could imagine going back, but it wasn't super-memorable. [subsequent edit] We returned for a farewell breakfast, and our experience was significantly better. We're changing our overall review to four stars as a result.

Great little local "country style" family restaurant. Not the "Ritz Carlton" but exactly what to expect for a nice little local place. Looks better on the inside than out. Very nice staff.

Breakfast food galore! I LOVED the mahi mahi breakfast burrito. Loved it so much we went back twice to get it. We also tried the local boy omelette and the ono fish breakfast burrito. The local boy omelette was good because I love kimchee. However, the sausage made it a little too salty for my taste. The ono fish breakfast burrito...was the same as mahi mahi breakfast burrito except ono fish is pretty bland and dry. It was chunks of it which I didn't like. Bottom line: get the mahi mahi breakfast burrito!!! dump salsa sour cream and ketchup on it. It. is. delicious!

Our family of 6 ate here at Ono's for lunch. We ordered 5 burgers and a grilled cheese. Unfortunately, at one bite we ALL thought the burger meat tasted bad or not like your usual patties at all. Not sure what type of meat that was! Even the simple grilled cheese tasted off. Only thing edible was the French fries. Service was barely average. Folks Please save your money, Do Not waste $70 here like we did. It was such a waste of food. Please Find somewhere else to eat.

Truly local vibe, not advertised with big signage. Only Breakfast and Lunch, and they do both very well. Though the menu features mostly comfort style breakfast foods and meat oriented lunches, they do have an excellent salad at lunch and make very nice Omelettes that, if you can restrain yourself, can stay on the healthy side. At breakfast they serve a Pineapple Jelly that you can purchase and take away- it is particularly delicious with the Sourdough Toast- that alone can get me to pull over if I'm driving through Kapa'a in the morning and am hungry! Family run, and the service has at least three generations of people helping out at the various times I've been there. Definitely a favorite of locals.

Ono Family Restaurant was one of my favorite breakfast spots on the island. I just had the basic portuguese sausage, fried rice & egg breakfast while my friend had a kimchee omelette and it was delicious!! The servers were all so kind and I really felt at home eating in their restaurant. I really wish I came here again to try the other goodies on the menu. While visiting the island this restaurant is definitely a place to try!

Service was great. Food was good. Nothing to complain about but nothing to rave about either. I found some other breakfast gems on the island I preferred more.

we came here for breakfast 2 days in a row coz we love it! i love that they have fried rice as a side. the rice was cooked really well. My favorite dish was Kimchi omelette with Portuguese sausage. It was creative and so good: 2 thumbs of for this dish. I also tried grill Mahi Mahi: 2 eggs dish. it was good but the fish was too cooked for me. You need to try the homemade jam here. So good!
