Food: I had the Evil Prince pork fried rice. It was good, but it wasn't spicy at all like the waiter said it would be. The portion was also pretty small. So I was a little disappointed with it not being spicy... I pretty much ordered it because of the name. :) Service: I think it was a one man show when we were there for a somewhat late lunch. There were a few tables occupied besides our party of 5. Even by himself, service was adequate. I did however had to get up to get napkins for the table. Location: The restaurant is located in a small strip mall. It might be a little hard to find a parking spot. We were pretty fortunate to find a spot right in front of the place.

Mediocre for take out. I don't know if the food is better if you dine in. Sometimes that is the case. But we ordered the pad thai and the vegetarian broccoli noodles, both with tofu, and took the order to go to an outdoor evening picnic. When trying a new Thai place we pretty much always get the pad thai so we can gauge how good the place is compared to others we like (or dislike). These dishes were ok, but nothing special. The noodles seemed a bit overcooked and clumpy. Saeng's is on par with Bangkok Chef, which is a shame because the interior of the restaurant shows they are trying to create a nice experience. I doubt we will be back again because there are other places we prefer in the area, but you never know. If ratings from other Yelpers improve, perhaps we will give it another go.

I'm a new 'fan' of Thai food. I don't know how to order properly and probably never will actually put an effort into learning all the dishes. Chicken panang and pad thai are the 2 main focus dishes I will only look for on the menu. Anyways, about Saeng's. Boyfriend's family chose to eat out last night and we landed at Saeng's. I thought the decor was really interesting, found that they had a second floor, though it didn't seem to be in use. TIP: they serve sushi (sashimi, nigiri, rolls, and donburi). We ordered some sticky rice, chicken panang (mild, medium, or lao hot?, you can chose level of heat upon ordering), spring rolls, spicy tuna roll, dymanite roll. Food was good, I left nice and full, very satisfied :) 3 stars because the service was awkwardly slow. It took such a long time to get sat first off where we had servers walking around, look at us and walk to their table. When we were finally sat, empty water glasses were not filled for some time. After ordering..it felt like forever until we received any food. Spring rolls came first. We were hungry, and well that went pretty quickly even with feeding a 3 year old. My boyfriend also ordered a beer to go along with his sushi, but that beer was served before any food was at the table and it seemed that the waitress really could not remember who ordered what (the entire meal). Beer was warm by the time the sushi arrived so it definitely did not compliment the way it should have. All main dishes were served and well I know I've mentioned this before about my spice tolerance...I had to drink a lot of water. Had 1 refill and ended up drinking all of my boyfriend's water too. It wasn't until desert was served that we got a second refill and it was kinda pointless by then. Desert orders, 2 mudpies, 1 tapioca. They only had 1 mudpie left so replaced with macnut ice cream. Mudpie served to wrong person, macnut served wrong person. No sign of tapioca (which was for the 3 year old) so someone was jealous of all the other deserts on the table. Had to ask who I thought was a manager for it. Once served it was warm....a little odd but I do not know much about tapioca. Since it was a family outing with child we did give a nice tip, but my mind was going crazy...not wanting to give that full 20%. I hate to be that person but tip is given for food AND service, not just food. Maybe lunch time is better...not crossing them out of my book just yet.

Great food but slow service. We were able to make reservations for our party of 8 but it took a long time for our entrees to come out. We got our drinks and then appetizers a little while after ordering. Not many refill requests without flagging down our waiter. Water refills was ok though. We ordered spring rolls, veggie Sushi and a few of the vegetarian dishes like pineapple fried rice, tofu vegetarian noodles and evil Prince with vegetables and added tofu. Rice is extra. The sushi was very good which was a surprise to find at this Thai restaurant. They have a full sushi bar in their drink bar! We ordered seconds! The veggie roll had cucumber, avocado, shredded carrot AND asparagus. Ordered dishes with medium which was a nice warmth but HOT was definitely HOT.

This place is delicious, the food is killer and i highly recommend the coconut tofu soup. Its heaven in your mouth. Want meat with it? Just ask. Price is very affordable. I think their apps are overpriced but the meals are solid and good portions.

This is one of the nicer "small" Thai restaurants that I have been to. It is traditionally decorated and had a very warm feel. The menu has everything Thai you could want and is easy to read and understand. There is a fair selection of appetizers, salads, main course, sushi, as well as deserts. The food was prepared quickly and brought out by a very friendly waiter. It was a very nice lunch.

Great ambiance--reminds me of my trip to Thai land. Food is always good (even the sushi which at first was an odd surprise). After checking out all the other Thai restaurants in Kailua town, this one is my new favorite!

Noodles are very good! So much better than typical Thai restaurants. And the Tom Yum Talay (spicy seafood soup) is good too. Portions are well sized, prices are reasonable, service is friendly and attentive. Don't be fooled by it's strip mall location. It's a cute little spot with tasty Thai food.

We stopped in before a hike and absolutely loved it! The red chicken curry was fabulous! My boyfriend had never had Thai food before (didn't think he liked it) and this won him over. We don't know when we'll get back, but we know we will because this is now our benchmark for good food, service, and atmosphere.

Really good Thai restaurant in Kailua! Pad Thai Noodles, seafood curry - very tasty. And also great sushi.

The place is pretty. Its clean and the service is friendly and accommodating. Traditional Thai with a nice complement of Sushi. We had soup, a Panang, a veggie dish and a couple of beers...60 bucks, not so cheap...but all of it was tasty. It's a nice place to sit and have a meal with friends. 4 stars because the portions are not really family style size. If two people are sharing you'll be scrapping for the last bite!

We just left this place as we were waiting for a table. What I think was possibly the owner/manager just berated and belittled a man in a wheel chair upon asking for a table for his family. The manager's hospitality was extremely unwelcoming, basically he refused to accommodate a disabled customer. It was the most uncomfortable scene. We left before ever getting seated. Horrible experience ever!

Ok, so I took a look at the reviews but I have never had a problem with my order...like EVER. I have eaten here a few times, and each time my waiter was prompt and helpful and nice. I'm kind of shocked to hear that this is an anomaly. Regardless, I shall continue on with my 5-star review. Why 5 stars? 1) I LOVE THAI FOOD. 2) FOOD IS BOMB. 3) SERVICE IS BOMB. I have not had a bad experience to date. I love their curry dishes (I order them every time). I love their red and green curries. I love that you can increase the heat based on your preference. I love things spicy, so I got the hottest option. I was pleasantly surprised. I remember a few times, at a couple Thai restaurants in NYC, when the food literally made me sweat due to the heat of the dish. This time, it was just right (actually, almost a little too "medium" from my taste). The curry is super rich and yummm. I also adore the calamari here; crispy and hot and just right. I love the decor of the place too. It's festive enough to go on a casual date or for a nice lunch. I love the ornateness of the place. Puts me in the right mood to eat Thai! Overall, I recommend this place for a quick bite to eat. I will keep going again and again. Recommend: - Calamari - Red Curry with Beef - Green Curry with Beef

I LOVE Thai food so I don't discriminate trying other places. I personally just like their beef salad. I tried their Evil dish (forgot the rest of the name) and I must say, it was pretty bland. The sauce tasted like nothing, maybe just water. I was so iffy to try their other dishes due to the reviews but thought I'd give it a chance. But I think I'll just stick to getting the beef salad.

Went to Saeng's on 4/3 for dinner. That was about the 3rd or 4th time we've been there and have been pretty happy with the food. There were some hit and miss dishes but we settled on a few we liked. The waiter that night was very helpful and attentive. He even gave us some small deserts (ice cream for kids and tapioca for adults) even though we did not order desert. Small portions but the thought was nice. The only thing we were disappointed about was the papaya salad was too mild with mostly vinegar type of taste. Granted we did order it mild but I swear the last time we ordered it moderate (not sure what term they use) it was really spicy. Other than that though it was a good experience.

Utterly disappointed! Florescent green curry taste was horrible and very watery. Thai coffee lacked flavor and looked like mud. They now serve sushi and play Japanese music...we thought we were coming for thai food. ??? This will be our last visit here! According to the server, the cook has changed...please bring back the previous one!

Just ordered chicken phad Thai and garlic shrimp to go. The rice was good but that's about it. The phad Thai was fishy in a couple spots but mostly dry, sticky, and top ramen like. The shrimp was very fishy tasting. We ordered medium spice but neither dish had any spice at all. The prices online are not accurate... It's much more expensive

Sadly, last visit with hubby.... Yucky. Watery curry, inedible. Seems even the spring rolls had less filling in them.

While front-of-house seemed a little distracted and my brother didn't get the Coke he ordered, these are minor quibbles. Atmosphere is excellent, food is excellent, and prices are quite reasonable. We had fried calamari as an appetizer, Pad Thai, Fried Fish Curry, and Masaman Scallops, and loved it all! If you like Thai, this is an excellent choice. They also serve sushi.

  • Marshall W.

Meh! Mediocre, with small (tiny) portions. Our group of 4 went away hungry, and we thought we over ordered. Prices were high, for what we got. The place had a certain ambiance, but not one that was relaxing. Service was perfunctionary. There are some great restaurants in Kailua town, but this is not one of them. Sorry.

it took a while for them to make my takeout panang curry. i asked for mild (out of mold/med/hot) but id say it was a medium. the curry had flavor but the only vegetable was green beans. wheres the carrot or some onion? the chicken with it looked like they just boiled it and threw it in. for that and sticky rice it was almost $14 which i feel is way overpriced for what you get. because of that i have to bump down a star from 3 to 2.

Upon yelping this establishment I found a two star rating and the doubt started finding it's way into the groups thoughts on the place. We ended up settling for Thai food. The general consensus of the group was whoever is leaving these yelps is not only uneducated but probably still homeless. Amazing food, great service, and our waiter ( Sam ) was fantastic. Overall if you have the time and desire to try something new, come in here. You won't regret it.... And go ducks

I love this place. I like the atmosphere and the food! I usually come ere with a friend and the portions are perfect for sharing. The service is usually speedy and the weight staff courteous. The prices are reasonable too since the portions are so big. My friends and I got sushi, soup and pad Thai last time and it was about $20 per person including tip.

Saeng's USED to be one of our favorite restaurants when we would visit. The prices have gone up and the taste is just not the same. The green curry was salty and watery. The fried calamari had several pieces that were without batter and the calamari looked as if it was frost-bitten. The fried chicken and sticky rice were the same. The food must be really salty because we had a slight headache after and my family and I were all so thirsty. I have gotten much better Thai food in the open market at Windward Mall.

Used the entertainment book coupon here since we were craving Thai food. Coupon only covers entrees, not appetizers. Anyways, we tried their fried rolls as appetizers. Not recommended at all. It was chewy and portions was small for the price it cost. Pad Thai was okay. I had better. The vegetable curry was ok, just wish the portions was a little more since it was just simple veggies. Gave this an extra star, since service was good. Thank goodness we had the coupon which saved us a little. Don't think I would pay full price for their portions, maybe if I had another coupon, I would come back and try something else.

This review is specifically for he crispy fish - I've had many of the other offerings, but this dish is a standout. Simply put, it's delicious. You get exactly what you would hope and expect - delicious white fish, fried in a crispy (panko?) crust with a Thai sweet and sour sauce. Paired with brown rice, I dare anyone in Kailua to try to find a better dish if you're in the mood for a meal of this sort. The reviewers who claim the portions are small were either high or extremely large individuals who require more than a normal portion - I would describe the plates as plentiful.

I moved to Kailua from town about 6 months ago and have been avoiding this place because of the reviews....but I regret it now! We started with Tom Kha and it was super delicious and authentic, just like we had in Thailand! Pad Thai and Panang Curry were really good too. The finale was the mango sticky rice- it was absolutely amazing. If I wasn't already stuffed I would have ordered another. I would recommend this place over Champa Thai ANY day. So sad they have bad reviews on yelp...service was friendly and quick, and the food was great! Can't wait to come back!

Weren't sure about trying this place cuz of some of the negative reviews but decided to give it a try...glad we did. We're visiting from California and have had some of the best Thai food and this place is very good. I'm confused about why it isn't getting better reviews. We had the fish soup...it was yummy....they got the spice level perfect. We also tried the green chicken curry, ginger chicken and some noodles...all were very delicious. My son even had sushi and liked it. The service was prompt for 6 of us and our server was very courteous. Overall...it was a great experience. Hope more people give it a try.

I used to get a take-out from Sengs semi-regularly, but stopped because i thought the quality of the food went down, and the service was poor (lost orders, food not being ready on time and having to wait longer etc). However, i recently decided to give them another go. It seems like there might be some new staff in. My overall experience this time round was much improved. I will be back.

So the best thing I had at this joint was the mai tai. Based on the taste, it appeared to be the standard recipie you would see in a detroit dive (a rum and coke with a deluge of pineapple juice). After being warned by the wait staff that the macadamia chicken was dry I went with another specialty, the fried chicken (corninsh game hen). Once again a dry dish with inconsistent seaspning and a side of sticky rice that could have been used the plug the Mississippi dykes. My gf's pineapple fried rice was tasteless to say the least. I get the impression this joint is on life support from loyal cuatomers. PULL THE PLUG. I think this place is a solid candidate for Jon Taffer.

Pros: Great decor; cute, friendly, and attentive waitresses; tasty rice. Cons: $4 for jasmine rice, really... WTF? It's just a small bowl of rice. Hate to hate but the pad thai, seafood curry, and spring rolls were all marginal tasting at best. The pad thai was a sticky tasteless glob with chicken didn't taste like chicken - our taste buds couldn't figure out what it tasted like - but it wasn't chicken. The seafood curry had very little liquid in it and was OK to dip the rice into it. The shrimp in it were OK but we were not grooving on the taste of the fish and bamboo in it - funky taste for both. The spring rolls were a deep fried hot mess in every sense of those words. The rolls were an oily mush; there was not enough lettuce pieces to wrap the six rolls; and the cucumber garnish was cut crossways not into slivers so you had to break them in half with your fingers to put them in your wrap. The guy next to us sent something back to the kitchen to be redone; we were starving and would've eaten bark and grass if offered it. In other circumstances, we might've sent our food back as well. The cost of the meal was $40 and so. not. worth. it. I honestly thought we were rolling the dice on getting sick because of the seafood dish. We ate here months ago with my boss and his wife and the food was definitely so much better tasting - that's why we came back but after yesterday, this place is a definite no-go.

Elegant food in elegant surroundings. Enjoyed spring rolls with lettuce and mint wrap; excellent garlic fish. Chicken curry not so good. Waitress perhaps misunderstood our heat-level wishes. Both dishes came far too mild. The pork fried rice was also disappointing.

I'm not a huge Thai food fan, but this place made me question myself on that. My boss took me here and we ate family style. We started with the fried spring rolls, and they were so good! Especially the sauce that comes with them, it paired perfectly with the mint and the mochiko spring roll skin. For an entree we got the green curry tofu. I have not stopped thinking about this since I ate there! It was so delicious. Especially with the sticky rice. The tofu was so soft and flavorful, and the curry was ridiculously amazing. So Ono, it's the best Thai food I've had! The inside of the restaurant was so pretty, too.

During the winter rainy months, Thai food is like Asian chicken soup for the soul. In Kailua, Saeng's delivers. Hot spring rolls with all the fresh greens: lettuce, mint, cucumber. The spring rolls here are flaky and light compared to others around. Tom Yum soup...the ultimate soup for when you are under the weather. I like that in a traditional Tom Yum, you are not able to eat 75% of the ingredients in the bowl. Here it is savory and salty. Panang Curry with Jasmine Rice. Portion was a bit small. But quite flavorful with coconut milk and peanut essence. I love the decor of this place as well. You walk in and there is a beautiful thai statue of a woman sitting in Bharadvajasana with prayer hands. Every table by the window has a little statue on it. Service is good too. We came in 10 minutes before lunch closed and were seated anyway without that feeling like we were bothering them. Price is moderate. Lunch for 2 for 35 ish. You don't have to be under the weather to enjoy good Thai food. But if you are, it's a nice alternative to Vicks Vap-O-Rub.

Spring rolls and stuffed chicken Wings appetizers were terrific. For mains, try crispy fish red curry, green curry pork, Thai eggplant Basil chicken, pad Thai noodles with shrimp, all around $10, and mild. Ask for extra chili spices If you like spicier flavor. . This place has a zen, exotic decor, responsive service, and a full bar with generous pours A Thai standout you'll enjoy.

Service was slow and then there was a LONG BLACK HAIR in our spring roll. We decided to leave so we let the server know there was a hair in our food and we would not be ordering anything else so she brought us the check for the two orders of spring rolls and charged us for both! Charging for an order of food with a hair in it is NOT ACCEPTABLE. When we complained the cook came out of the kitchen with long black hair NOT TIED BACK and said that we needed to show two people the hair before it would be taken off the bill. At that point the plate had been thrown away so they refused to comp the spring roll order. I don't usually write YELP reviews but this place was so atrocious I just had to share my experience.

We came here once with my boyfriend's family. Not quite sure what we ordered, but the food was good. The service was slow though, and they got one of our orders wrong. It also took a while to request our check and to actually get it. We'll probably give this place another chance.

I normally avoid trips to the Windward Side but a picture in a Honolulu Magazine drew me to this location. The restaurant is dimly lit and gives you the feel of being transplanted into another place but the magic seems to end there. The servers were friendly but did not know the menu very well and seemed easily overwhelmed despite only having enough customers to fill a third of the restaurant. The food is of good quality but the portions are ridiculously small for the price. You can find both better sushi and better Thai food elsewhere. Save yourself the trip.

*Stuffed chicken wings, pad Se-ew w/pork, large sticky rice, green curry w/chicken, panang curry w/pork, fried banana with honey = $52* Dear Saengs, When my family is forced to embark on the phenomenally long 25 minute journey to Kailua, we like to make a day of it. Heaven forbid we drive to the other side of the planet and don't at least dine at a local eatery. At 12:30 you were mostly empty, and even though our children made the serene atmosphere not so serene the other patrons did not seem to mind. I'm not sure what to make of you. Your curries were so-so, edible but nothing special. The Panang curry was watery and tangy, not like the rich peanut-y curry I'm accustomed to and the green curry was a little too sweet. Your Pad se-ew was odd, I was taken aback by the inclusion of celery and carrots and the noodles had a funny flavor. However, my discerning (picky) 2 year old gobbled up the noodles so I was pleased. Now, your stuffed chicken wings. WOW. Delicate crunch, yummy insides, perfect dipping sauce, my husband and I fought over the last leg. Of course I emerged victorious, but gave him a little chunk out of pity because I am, simply, wonderful. And your fried banana? At first I was dubious that little banana lumpias (does lumpia need an "s" to be plural?) with honey were going to cut it. Surely it must need something besides a drizzle of honey, perhaps some chocolate sauce or whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream? No sir, does not need any of those things. It was so delicious that I had to muster all of my motherly instinct to share one with my daughter, and I cut it into teeny pieces so she wouldn't finish in time to ask for another one. I'm not ashamed of this. The next time I come I am going to order two plates of stuffed chicken wings, two plates of fried banana with honey, eat them in alternating bites and have a veritable fried Thai feast! 5000 calories? Big deal. It's like living in the South but with Thai flavors. I can take it, I'll just buy bigger clothes. See you again, prepare your deep fryer. Sincerely, Angela
