Best of the Best This charming home delivers perfection in accommodations, service and local flavor. Our bed was in the Goldilocks zone - just right. Slept like when we were kids. Ceiling fan kept us very comfortable, plenty of room and storage, lovely bath, decor was very appealing and not overdone or fussy. Our hostess pampered us with a royal spread at breakfast where we "talked story" with two other couples and lost track of time. It was glorious. If you are heading to Hilo, this is a place where your money will be well spent!

Wonderful place !! My wife, and adult daughter stayed 2 nights. The setting is really wonderful, with great grounds. Fruit trees and traditional old Hawaiian style setting, with a great Lanai where you have breakfast overlooking the yard. The breakfast was very nice, with tropical fruit from the garden, so very fresh. It is a little outside of the downtown Hilo area, so you can't really walk into town, but other than that, a great place

I have nothing but praise for the Old Hawaiian B&B! My boyfriend and I enjoyed a four-night, relaxing stay and had a wonderful time. Lory and her husband (and their dog, Cinder) were extremely welcoming! Breakfast was fresh and delicious, and the room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. I would highly recommend the Old Hawaiian for anyone staying in Hilo!

I really want to give this B&B five stars. But I can't. As much as I love this place, there are things about it which make it not an ideal place to stay for the night or longer. Because Old Hawaiian B&B is in a residential neighborhood, the owner, Lory, is very concerned about patrons being really quiet. I am not a loud person, and I'm certainly not a raucous one either. So this was disconcerting. I understand her concern, but this is a business she is running where people are paying money to spend time here. She was a bit too nervous about it. When we first arrived, she ran out of the house to greet us, but not in time to prevent my boyfriend from activating the car alarm, which unfortunately is one that makes a loud beep. That was what she was hoping to muffle before we shut our car doors. She was all flustered and speaking in a hushed voice attempting to convince us of the virtues of silence. She's preaching to the choir. And there is a limit. Sorry. We were the only two guests there that night. Next: Our semi-private bathroom. I say "semi-private," because it's virtually open to our bedroom. It's basically a partitioned off space. The door is one of those folding screens most commonly used as closet doors. It made for no privacy of sound between the bathroom and the bedroom. Since my boyfriend and I know each other well, that's perhaps not a problem. But many people do like their privacy in such matters. We're both with them. We both loved the fact that the shower is solar-powered. Unfortunately, the day before had been cloudy and continued to be the next morning when we awoke and intended to take showers after our long flight from the Mainland. The night before, Lory did mention that if the shower is cold, she will turn on the backup heat. Unfortunately, she wasn't around the morning we were there. I attempted to get someone's attention in the main part of the house, but no one came to our rescue. So frigid showers is what we had. The room itself has sheer curtains and looks out onto the patio. I'm glad we were the only guests, because there wasn't any privacy in that respect either. A more serious concern than that of the bathroom. Lory and her brother-in-law, Kevin, took care of us. We got the impression that Lory is extremely conscientious, but she dropped the ball during our visit. Yes, everything was in its place. But refer back to the above issues. The next morning we were hosted by Kevin, who was incredibly laid back and enjoyable to talk to. The breakfast was absolutely amazing, and seriously made up for the quirkiness of the room and other idiosyncrasies. This is what it included: Bananas Purple Star Apple Egg Fruit Plant Tomato Tree (Tamarillo) Papaya Grapefruit Tangerine Lychee Blood Orange Lemon (for water) Muffins and bread: Cranberry Banana bread with chocolate chips and macadamia nuts Yogurt Hard boiled eggs Smoothie: banana, mango So much food. Way more than I should eat, but it was all so good and so well prepared. Some or most of the fruit was grown right on their property.

Loved my experience here. Very well kept & clean. Nice hot shower & comfy bed. We arrived late (after 9pm) & were still greeting by the owner who was very kind & showed us to our room. Slept all through the night. It's was perfect. Woke up by 8am. Opened up the shades to our room & notice our breakfast already set out on the lanai. The weather was perfect & the fresh fruits (some that are picked from their backyard) & baked goods were delicious. Highly recommend staying here if stopping by Hilo & will for sure be back if I'm ever lucky enough to come back to "The Big Island".

"Hilo in general" My wife and I stayed one night in Sept and found the guests quite interesting at the breakfast gathering. Lory was attentive and accomodating. Got the impression that Stewart wasn't a big fan of the guest interactions. Lory seemed methodical, not excited. Our biggest complaint would be in the city/town of Hilo. We ventured downtown and were surprised at how rundown and the large contingent of alcohol influenced people we encountered. Not so comfortable. I think part of our disappointment stemmed from the 7 days we had just spent in Kapalua at the beach villas. As far as value, I would say it was good given the $$$$ charged on the Waikoloa side.

As soon as we got there, we were greeted by their dog Sydney. The hosts, Stewart and Lory, are very nice and give a lot of recommendations of where to eat in the area. I'm not sure which room we got to stay in, but it looked out into their huge backyard. The room was nice, but smelled a bit musty and felt a little damp. The room got a little stuffy, but they have a big fan over the bed. Lory makes an amazing breakfast. She serves amazing fresh fruit, fruit smoothies and boiled eggs. She also bakes sweet potato muffins, banana bread and muffins. You are definitely well-fed in the morning.

My husband and I are from the Seattle area. This was my husbands first time to Hawaii and his only request was to see an active volcano, so we stayed in Hilo for 3 nights at The Old Hawaiian B&B. Lory was very pleasant. She is also from Washington state....so we seemed to have a similar way about us. The prior reviewer said "not excited", but I think its a NW thing. The rooms are nice. One of them is very small, but we weren't in that one. The back lanai is where you have breakfast which consists of fruit (many interesting and tasty varieties), hard boiled eggs, and something freshly baked by Lory....muffins, breads, scones. She makes a fabulous scone....not the hard dried out scones you get at Starbucks. Lory has a couple of lawn chairs out in the yard that did quite nicely when we wanted to relax in the sun between adventures. We didn't spend much time in Hilo proper. We went to the volcano, a botanical garden, and other nearby attractions. By the way, if you are looking for local grub (as in not at all healthy), I recommend Blanes (ya, the drive up fast food place)....cheap and tasty.

the breakfast is delicious, the owners charming, it is clean ... there is just no privacy in the room. I heard the couple in the other room snoring the whole night... The room we rented had a direct view to the patio with a french door.. nice view... but everybody outside can see the WHOLE room... we had to had the curtains closed the whole time... so unless you like people staring at you when you sleep, you will not wake up looking at a nice and sunny weather. For the price I would have expected more...

EXCELLENT! Our three night stay at this charming and comfortable B&B was fantastic. Close enough to downtown Hilo and the Volcano, you still felt like you were coming home from an adventurous day and were immediately relaxed. Lori is a FANTASTIC host and her breakfast is not to be missed - fresh fruits mostly from her own backyard, boiled eggs, yogurts, and fresh baked goods - dear god, those coconut macadamia nut scones, banana bread, cranberry orange muffins - outstanding!! i was always the last one to leave the breakfast table! She gave us great tips on places to eat around town, and you can't beat the farmers markets in Hilo. Our room was perfect, lots of windows, and the room refreshed every day. The bathroom was perfect and the shower was a rainfall blessing after hours of hiking at volcano. Lots of mosquitos, but Lori is prepared with a full can of Off out on the lanai. And the stars...oh man, gorgeous. Would happily stay here again! Thanks again Lori (and Sydney)! Can't wait to take a crack at those scones!

We had a lovely stay on our first and last night in Hilo. Absolutely gorgeous house, quiet, lush trees and bushes in the gardens and amazing breakfast! Lory and Stewart Hunter, husband and wife are both friendly, great hosts and just absolutely accomodating. We got to stay in two different rooms, Sunrise and Hawaiian room and they were both lovely, quiet, comfortable and water pressure was great! (Yes, water pressure is important!) :) Lory cooks breakfast every morning, fresh baked banana and chocolate macadamia muffins, fresh plate of fruits and boiled eggs with aromatic Kona coffee! Their pet dog, Sydney is a shy but very adorable dog.... Great location, walking distance to Boiling Pots Park and 1 mile to the infamous Rainbow Falls! Definitely recommended when u are in Hilo.
