I have sensitivity to MSG which runs in the family. Having said that, Im thrilled to share with you that this is one of the few places where I really enjoyed my food and I had no reaction from the food itself (Plum sauce of course has msg so I try to very little of it). Everything was so fresh, packed with great flavor and my only issue was that my stomach couldnt stretch to accommodate when I wanted to eat more. The struggle was real. It is a small mom and pop shop with one chef wonder who does it all. By the way she is absolutely amazing. I say hello whenever I see her but it is rare because she cooks everything in the kitchen. Yes things can slow down sometimes but oh man, when her food arrives, it is worth every second and drop of my drool (I was hangry...) Our family staple order at this place is the vietnamese beef stew (the best I ever had), spring roll and grilled shrimp with vermicelli, pho of course (clean and flavorful broth). Everything is made with love and care. I highly recommend it!

Prices are right and portions are nice sized! In particular, i enjoy the pork chop and the beed stew with rice noodle.

Wow this place gives me memories of my trip last year to Hilo... me and my cousin have dined here a few times. The vietnamese food is delicious. I'm vietnamese and it tastes authentic enough. Of course there was plenty of seating and a laid back crew.

Hidden gem located across the street from the Hilo Bay Hotel. We went for lunch. GF had the grilled Pork Chop with rice and Vegetables. I had the Pho with meatballs and steak. Very tasty and inexpensive. Plenty left over for a snack later. Only $25 with tip.

Small but nice. Best place for rice noodles, I recommend No.3 No.20 No. 35. You will love it! Good price and nice service.

The Banh Mi is spot-on, with excellent meat and perfect, crispy bread. The Ph gà (chicken) needs to be cooked with dark meat chicken for better flavor but I'm sure the Americans push for "healthier" white meat chicken. The Ph bò (beef) is pretty good and both come with a respectable plate of herbs to add to them. We were looking for some passable Hawaiian or western food and were so happy to find this place! The owner is very nice also and it is definitely a family atmosphere with a lot of Vietnamese people eating there. I would definitely recommend the Banh Mi gà And also the beef pho. The rice dishes with grilled meat looked excellent also.

Great Pho and Pad-Thai... ok so it's not perfect by any means. The noodles were not the right sized rice noodles and my Pad-Thai that was supposed to be spicy was barely hot, however, you have to consider location and one thing I have learned about Hawaii after living here for three months, the foods not that good. So, for a meal I would give three stars to on the main land gets 4 in Hawaii. P.s. The ambiance is tacky and badly done. Even had a painting that was falling off the wall.

Yummy veggie fried rice. The summer rolls tasted good. The veggie chow fun didn't have as many vegetables as I expected. It had good flavor, but was greasy. I wish they would filter their water. Sweet older man was our server. He got my order wrong once over the phone, but was very apologetic when I arrived to pick up and had to wait.

**OK, the funny shirts (iPho etc) and the hilarious baby do in fact add up to another star, so I'm bumping this review up from 3 stars to 4 stars.** If you're looking for chicken soup in Hilo, this is the best I've had.... ... but of the two dishes we ordered, the other one (chicken with sweet and sour sauce) was not good. It was just a greasy fried boneless thigh sliced up and served with a tiny dish of chili sauce out of a bottle. Almost inedible. BUT, my chicken pho soup was really good, and had nice chunks of white meat chicken in it and a nice accompanying plate of herbs and sprouts. Some funny shirts on the wall and the waitress's baby in a playpen at the end of our table were all quite entertaining as it was a very good natured baby.

Had some Pho for takeout. Yum, yum! Really hit the spot!

Ordered the pho with beef and meatballs. The soup seemed to have a lot of msg and not a lot of flavor. The beef was was also fairly tough. The portions were pretty big and the owner who came to talk with us was friendly, but the food was definitely lacking.

Discovered this place while staying at the Hilo Seaside. Ordered the cold noodle salad with grilled pork and spring roll. Very tasty. Nice texture with the daikon, cucumbers, bean sprouts, lettuce, vermicelli. A little skimpy on the meat, though. Served with a fish-based sauce on the side.

Yum! I always order the Bun Cha so i can't speak for any of the other food but the Bun Cha is flavorful, really nicely seasoned and packed with herbs. The service is good, the ladies are really sweet and I like the location. Perfect for eating and going for a swim after. The best Vietnamese I've found in Hilo, which isn't exactly saying a lot but I'll take what I can get!

Had The Pho. The plate of veggies. Found a small slug on basil stem. There's a thing called rat lung worm disease on the Big Island. This place needs to learn how to wash their vegetables and be consistent, If you won't feed it to your kids don't feed it to your customers. please wash your produce because it is a serious disease I wanted to tell them.

Beef soup was okay, tendons Tasted a little weird so didn't eat them. Price is so so I would not recommend. I am from Los Angeles this review is base on all the Vietnamese restaurants I have tired from LA

Pho &Beef Stew is our favorite here. Each time we came service was very quick and the owner was always nice. For those who are new, might find it difficult to speak with waitresses due to language barrier. But it's a must try the Beef Stew with noodles.

Excellent pho - the best we've found on the BI! Ask for the pickled onions to go with your pho. Service was very friendly and accommodating.

I love the cold noodles with spring rolls and shrimp. I always come here and they are so nice:)

I think that New Saigon has the best pho in Hilo. The broth is rich and flavorful, and the portion is generous. The service is always good. Some of the servers do not speak English well, so some non-verbal communication is good to use. Also tried the sweet & sour fish, but it was only okay. Too sweet for my taste. Chow funn is good though.

Today was my family's last day in Hilo. We have had this restaurant on our to do list for the past 6 days. We decided to check it off our list on the way out of town. We came in hungry and excited and came out VERY disappointed. We are a very diverse family and we had 5 Vietnamese family members in attendance. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet and the broth was VERY oily and the meat had a lot of fat. My nephew ordered a bowl of Pho Tai and had to order a supplemental order of com thit nuong because his pho didn't come close to satiating his hunger. I got my second glass of water but couldn't drink it because a fly landed on the rim and in the ice. My daughter said her bowl was very bland and had zero flavor. She says the water was the tastiest dish of her experience. My sister had to eat logan fruit that she luckily brought with her to flush out the flavor of her pho from her mouth. My son and daughter finished their bowls but that is probably because they are 7 and 9 and my wife was mad dogging them the entire meal. My wife had to break out a papaya salad that she had with her because she couldn't stomach finishing her bowl of pho. FYI she was born in Vung Tau. Next time we will eat Ramen noodles before we leave town rather than eat here. As I type this my wife continues to give me the stink eye because she thinks I'm being too harsh, however, she's just a nice person. Thanks for the water, but can't find the heart to recommend this restaurant.

We went here for dinner and were quite disappointed. My Beef Combination Pho was bland and Heather's Beef Stew was too sweet, no balance of spices. Service was ok...not great...tables were sticky...slow to refill water. Why two stars? There is a much better Pho place in Hilo, Pho Viet, and they set the bar. pretty high. We won't be back here...

We came here over lunch to have ginger chicken. What came on my plate was a Cold Boiled Chicken with Ginger on top and with Salad that looked very dry and old. After tasting the chicken we complaint about it since it was not at all what we expected when the menu says Ginger Chicken. The Owner argued with us and did not want to replace the meal with something else but insisted us to pay for the worst asian dish of my life. Believe me I know asian food but this was the worst place. Don't put a foot in there!

I went to this restaurant yesterday. My wife and I order 2 Pho, one is combo and other one is beef tendon. The soup is really oily and the taste was not like we tried in other Viet's restaurants. Most terrible is those beef tendon are extremely fat. I pretty sure I won't go again.

My husband and I are originally from O'ahu and we are big fans of Pho, this by far is the worst restaurant I've ever been to for pho!! The beef was so chewy I literally needed floss after eating! And for the price of 2 specials and an order of spring rolls $40!!! Never coming back here again!! Thumbs down!!! Again, this is not the place for Pho!!

So yummy. Service sucks but food is worth it. Their quality of to-go food makes up for poor dine in experience. My favorite Vietnamese restaurant on BI.

don't get fried chow fun . They oily and no flavor pho is no flavor. The deep fried noodles are really really deep fried. They tasted like those dry noodles in cup of noodles but deep fried. Avoid fried noodles at all costs. I did finish my plate though because luckily I had the munchies, but I probably won't be eating here again.

This was a great little hole in the wall place to eat, and it was open on Sunday unlike a lot of places in Hilo. We both had the Pad Thai and it was delicious. The staff were very nice. One thing is that on the menu under beverages is something called "che tapioca". It's not a beverage, but it is tapioca pudding with a hint of coconut. It was very good, just not a beverage.

I don't know why this place is getting 4 stars. The services here is so slooooooooooow. Took the guy 20 minutes to take our order and I had to walk to him to tell him what we wanted. Another 30 minutes for the food to come out. Seriously, it does not take 30 minutes to make pho and rice plates. After we're done, I asked for the check and walked to the guy to pay for it. The pho broth was bland. No taste what so ever. I guess we're spoiled having hundreds of pho here in the Bay Area. Everything about this place is wrong in so many ways.

Had rare steak pho, green beans with shrimp and summer rolls for a great price. The pho and rolls were exceptional. The pho was rich and flavorful and summer rolls were fresh and minty. Friendly staff and great service.

My parent's and I (who are Vietnamese) didnt think this place was bad at all. The cold noodle salad with egg roll & shrimp was good. The pho wasn't the most flavorful, but it wasnt bad either. You should just go and try it for yourself.

I ordered the beef combination pho soup. The soup was really greasy. It's also really pricey compared to NYC. It's around $10 - $12 for a bowl of noodles with soup. In NYC it's usually $5 - $7. The portions of meat was fair though. The noodles were so and so, nothing special. Just your mediocre vietnamese vermicelli noodles..

Singapore noodles had great flavor. Although, mine was made with shrimp and pork and there was not enough of it.

This is a Vietnamese reataurant. Definitely not Korean. It is always nice with good food at good prices. Location is nice as you can see the pond across the street. Not fancy, just good!

One of my haunts. Yummy food! I always get the spring rolls and special fried rice. My boyfriend gets the mi bo kho. Sometimes, we try some of the specials. Everything I've tried tastes good. You can't expect gourmet dining, but despite the road there is a nice view of the water from the dining area. My favorite hole in the wall restaurant!

we visited from Oahu, an huge Pho fans. came here for dinner, and quite disappointed. I should have known when it said Vietnamese/Chinese food. family owned and the whole family was eating when we arrived. didn't pay much attention to us. The Pho was super bland. very watery. had to add everything on the table to give it some flavor. the rare bee left a stank flavor in my mouth for about an hour after the meal. maybe their Chinese food is better. if u want Pho, search elsewhere.

New Saigon is hands down the best Vietnamese Restaurant in Hilo Town. We dined for lunch there just now --- had to order the vermicelli, grilled pork and spring roll combo and was blown away by the fabulous tasting grilled pork, the freshness of the vermicelli (not that glob of noodles stuck together experience we've had so many times) and the perfectly fried spring rolls. My hubby insisted we share a bowl, and I totally regret not having my very own! I will definitely be back to satisfy my craving for authentic and well prepared vietnamese food. These guys know exactly what they are doing and if you ever get a chance to visit Hilo town, make sure to factor in a pit stop here!

After waking early in the morning and finishing almost 8-9miles of hike, we reached our hilo hotel pretty late and was lucky to see this place open and excepting orders :). Its family ownened buisness and the old lady is the cook who also take orders:). I ordered lemon chicken with rice and my wife ordered pad thai with tofu. I didnt like my chicken that much as it was fried (not a fan of fried chicken) + the sauce was towards sweet side. I guess this is there way of cooking of lemon chicken. I really liked the order of my wife pad thai ...with perfect touch of spice, as usual she wasnt able to finish it so i finished it as i didnt have my chicken that much ..due to sweeter side. This place is not that "wow" in chicken atleast the one i odered. I will recomment the par thai veggie of this place sure.

I think they just moved, Janelle. I saw new sign tonight where Ohana Grill used to be, next to Millie's.
