Food continue so be really good for Hilo! My family enjoyed a Chinese New Year dinner with steamed basa, Peking duck, chow mein, salt and pepper pork, abalone soup, and sizzling beef.

I suggest the salt & pepper pork ribs along with the salt & pepper string beans. The food always comes out hot and the vegetables fresh. Veggies so far have never been over cooked. Happy Valley is a great place for families or to eat with a bunch of friends. Dishes are served mostly "family" (a la carte) style here. So it is always great when everyone can choose a dish to share.

Food is good but employees are rude. They make a meal for themselves and eat in the dining area. Then when you need something and need to interrupt their meal you get the dirtiest looks like it's not their job to help you. But on the bright side, food is great.

The food was pretty good in terms of flavor and portion size. We will probably not return, mainly because the staff was not friendly at all.

My friend recommended this place. It was early so we were the second table in. I actually went there for their salt and pepper dungeness crab but that's seasonal and they didn't have it. But that's ok. We ordered the salt and pepper shrimp, sizzling steak, crispy gau gee cake noodles, and black bean basa fish. In 5 minutes we got our order family style. Everything was so good! The gravy in the cake noodle was so good I had to comment about it to my husband....and I've eaten a lot of cake noodles..I don't think I ever really cared before. The fish was cooked perfect and the streak came out in a sizzling pan. This place is a hidden gem...definitely!

This place does not speak Mandarin nor have chopsticks as default, but these don't effect the authenticity of the dishes. We ordered pepper & salt ribs (椒盐排骨)and eggplant in a hot clay(鱼香茄子煲)They are so delicious and make me feel back China!

I went here recently for dinner on Chinese new years so it was packed. I've been to this establishment a few times before though and I'm sure any other day would've seen just a few groups in the restaurant. Despite it being such a busy day though, the food was very very good. We had a great number of dishes brought to our table. So much so that the lazy suzan was just overflowing. However the staff was good about making sure that they cleared out the empty dishes so that there was a nice steady stream of food the entire time. The food and service were both good so I have to say I enjoyed myself quite a bit! I'd for sure recommend going here if you want some good Chinese food in Hilo!

High quality food. Their traditional steamed Kumu is my favorite besides every thing else there. Portions are excellent, price are excellent. Great family service! My first choice for Chinese food :)

If you are a first timer, best to ask the servers what's good. This place is known for a few thing and they might not be what you normally order. They are known for fresh seafood, local veggies, fried rice, cake noodles, and much more.

The food was fine. Unfortunately the first thing that greets you when you enter is a shut-down steam table, now used to display trinkets and jewelry. And maybe some recycling. Off to your right, the dining area is clean old-school banquet hall. So the first impression is more of Sad Valley Seafood Restaurant than Happy Valley. However, service and food was good. I had a delicious szechuan eggplant dish for about $10. Not a huge portion but enough. Friend #1 always goes there for the Mongolian Lamb, which he says is excellent. Friend #2 had seafood cake noodle that he liked, it was loaded with tiny squid. Friend #3 had broccoli with cashews which he liked. Friend #4 didn't like the orange chicken he ordered here previously and won't go back as a result. "Cause that's his dish. For any mainland haoles like me wondering what cake noodle is, it is a Chinese egg noodle shaped like spaghetti that is boiled, and then fried into a browned patty, then topped with sauce and your choice of protein and vegetables. The ones I've had were kind of bland, so I'm not too excited about it. I guess it's a comfort food if you grew up with it. Anyway, I did enjoy the big lazy susan on the table that we all kept accidentally putting our ice water on and then spinning so we couldn't figure out whose ice water was whose. Easily amused. My intuition is that this is not as good a place for your American Chinese dishes, but better if you know your authentic Chinese cuisine and know what to order. They had a lot of vegetarian options. I just can't quite go 4 stars yet. Maybe after a few more visits. The dining room could be so easily fixed up to give a better experience.

Looked at all the reviews and thought this would be a good place for Chinese food. Not so much. Beef and broccoli was extremely salty. Egg rolls were bland. Being on vacation we didn't know where to go. Would not recommend it.

When we visit our family in Hilo, this place is usually on the list of places we are taken to. Maybe it's because it's located really close to the uncle's house we are staying at, I'm not sure. The food is alright. To me, for some reason that the theme about Hilo food though and this one falls back into the pack of Hilo food that is so-so. Jesse W. put it best, "not spectacular, but pretty good for Hilo standards." It's located in a small shopping center so parking shouldn't be a problem at all.

don't get me wrong I love pandas but when you want authentic Cantonese cuisine ... this is the place to go to!!! there are some Americanized dishes such as lemon chicken and all that and it's all good as well. but the specialities here are the deep fried salt and pepper crab , shrimp string beans and pork!!! all yummers and fried delicousness! if you want on the healthier side there is the steamed fresh island fish done right In Chinese style with scallions ginger! oh so good and gooOOOd for the skin as my mom would say lol. my favorite things to eat here and would recommend getting : fried rice (always good), one of the salt and pepper dishes , crispy chicken(very tender)! and if you balling and not on a budget the steamed island fish or fried crab!!!

Decent, American-style Cantonese fare in a place where decent Chinese food is hard to find. I've never regretted eating here and go back all the time. I like the veggie dishes in particular but my wife always orders the steamed fish. Happy Valley is a good value and relied upon for dining by many Chinese residents of the Big Island. If you are a visitor to Hilo, please give Happy Valley a chance!

Still looking for a good Chinese restaurant in Hilo. This place was mediocre.

Fair prices, no thrills food, casual atmosphere, and large menu. Orange chicken was fresh and good. The workers here though could use some assistance with being friendlier. The mixed plate is also misleading and the male worker there was confusing. It's okay.

I was passing through Hilo with my in-laws (who are from Taiwan) and came across this place online. I'm glad I didn't read the yelp reviews before hand because they probably would have discouraged me from going. Everything we ate was GREAT. We started with the pork and (collard?) greens soup - sooo good! I don't know what cut of pork that is but it was delish. We also had our standard family dish, ma po tofu, which was also good. We had a plate of gai lan veggies which were standard (hard to mess up sautéed veggies). The best part was the fresh steamed fish. I forget the name but it was a red fish. Yum! Our waitress was a young girl who was super friendly. When we asked what type of fish they had, she brought out photos of each which was great because then my in-laws could choose without having to try and guess at the translation. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy but, hey, it's Chinese food - I go for the taste not the atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this place for authentic Chinese good.

5/3/12: I called to order take out, no answer. Driving by during dinner hour, the restaurant is dark. 7/3/07: Dinner with three others, I was looking forward to trying this place out, the selection of authentic chinese food (without the hawai flair) here in Hilo is thin. We arrived around 6:30pm, night before 4th of July. Not much of a crowd, didn't have to wait for a table. We order six dishes (hot and sour soup (good), crispy chicken, ma-po tofu (with pork), salt and pepper shrimp, cake noodles with chicken and chinese veggie stir fry (choi-sum) with oyster sauce. Overall, the meal was good - not spectacular, but pretty good for Hilo standards. The crispy chicken was really tender, but what isn't when you deep fry something. The salt pepper shrimp was good as long as you ate while it was hot (like at any other place). Restaurant serves alcohol, which is a plus. Service was casual but on-the-ball. I would consider adding this to our list of regular restaurants, will have to visit a couple more times to try other dishes. Dishes start around $7.00 each, reasonably priced. The waitress indicated that they typically open on all holidays. She recommended reservations for weekends. They normally open until 9pm most nights, but will stay open later ('till 10pm) for weekends and busy times.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
