This was the first place we ate on our trip. I had the pork adobo, my DH had hamburger steak, and my kids had the children's cheeseburger meals. The exterior is dirty (like I did not want my kids to play on the ground dirty) and you have to wipe your table down before you eat, but the kitchen was clean and organized, which is what really matters. The kids meals came in a really cute kids meals sack. The food was good. I would go back, but maybe try the downtown one?

With so many good reviews we had hoped for better. Family of 7 ate here on a recent trip to Hilo. We were looking for a quick, inexpensive lunch. I guess by HI standards is was probably fairly inexpensive (food is so expensive on the islands!) but even an inexpensive meal that disappoints makes it feel as though you paid too much. Menu items included the roast pork with gravy, a bacon cheeseburger, chili burger, some beef plate lunch, and a few other items unexceptional enough that I can't remember them. The kids were OK with their burgers. Not thrilled, but at least they ate them. The chili burger was gross - an assembled burger with chili dumped on the top of the bun. The roast pork and gravy left something to be desired. I'm not a fan of mac salad and theirs didn't win me over. The rest of the meal was edible but not exceptional. Not worth the money and definitely didn't live up to the reviews.

Seeing that this place had good reviews my mom and I stopped here so she could get an icee. First off, her icee wasn't good. My mom said she sucked the flavor out of the ice and was left with, well, ice. My mom got the grilled ahi sandwich (which was very greasy) and I had the mahi-mahi sandwich (which was fried). My sandwich was okay, my mom hated how greasy her's was. We also had macaroni salad (way too wet) and fries (soggy). A meal costing $17 should have been better and we won't be returning here anytime soon.

This review is based strictly on my experience with the young lady behind the counter at the industrial area location this morning (3/2/14). Here's the backdrop, sooooooo, I call in an order for breakfast, looking forward to having a yummy breakfast from one of my to go places in town. I explained what I wanted, then had to repeat myself a couple times, each time slower and slower to make sure we were on the same page. When the young lady finally read back my order correctly, eureka!, we are on our way. I thought, "no biggie, its early". Here's where things start to go awry. I reach the counter to pick up my order and I'm surprised to find out that my normally $8.50 breakfast plate was now a whopping $16.50 plate monster plate w/ triple the protein...."huh??? so, how did we get this wrong, when we just spent time on the phone repeating the order correctly back to each other", which I thought to myself. Again, I just I had to chuckle, as it must have be really early for this one. She did try to correct the situation immediately, which I appreciated, and she ended up giving her extra $8 mistake away to me, which I didn't need, but I reluctantly took it (but ended up throwing it away, because it was way to much food...3x what I normally order). However, when trying to recalculate what I owed, after she corrected the earlier mistake, my plate then went from roughly $16.50 to $14.75 to $12.50, then finally we settled on $11.00 or so, which was based on the large soda (tap water) I added to my order. We did the math together on the final total, her with her calculator and I, in my head spoke out loud. Never at any point did criticize her math skills, but she appeared annoyed, I assumed based on my attempts to correct her not once, but 3 times on her shoddy math. Understand that I just didn't want to have to pay for something I didn't purchase. After settling on the final cost of my meal, she explained that she was new, then mumbled something under her breath as she turned away. So, I'm now thinking, "young, early morning, but rattled and annoyed, and now its my fault???". I was going to just let it go, but, here's the kicker, rather than saying "thank you and I'm sorry about the situation. I'm new and it won't happen again. Please come again." or something to that effect to merely acknowledge the mess up on her part, when she gives me the final piece of my order that I was waiting for (because she messed up my order), she just smugly slides it across the counter with no acknowledgment at all and gives me a side eye, stinky stink eye. Hahaha. =) You gotta be kidding me.....gimme-a-break!!! I held my composure and I didn't say a thing, but when walking away I thought to my myself...."hmmmmmm, this probably deserves the coveted and first ever 1 star review that I've never ever given to a business on Yelp". And there you have it, dun, dun, dun...the reason behind my first ever 1-star review. Btw, I'm never going back if I see this young lady working behind the counter. What a joke.

They're known for their Chicken Katsu bento. I got one and it wasn't the same I used to remember when I was younger. It was cold, and they include the skin! Gross. But other than that, just put it in the microwave and you're good to go. Service it ok, the workers seems like they like to chit-chat with each other. A LOT.

After enjoying our day at Rainbow Falls, we decided to stop by Blanes Drive Inn based on yelp reviews. Let me start off by saying that the food wasn't that great, so I must sadly disagree with the hype and reviews. I tried the mahi mahi plate which comes with white rice and macaroni salad, everything was pretty bland and seemed almost like cafeteria food. My boyfriend tried the katsu chicken bowl which also wasn't impressive and had a weird tasting batter around the strips. Not to mention we couldn't even try the slush floats everybody is ranting and raving about on the reviews because their machine was out of order. I do have to say that the little young girl behind the counter was very polite with us, although there was another girl with black hair there that appeared to be very rude. We asked for refills and the younger girl told us it would be full price and that she was sorry, my boyfriend in shock said he had never heard of such thing as paying full price for a refill. The girl with the black hair rudely replied "Well it's Hawaii everything is expensive". I found her smart remark to be very rude and proves that she has no customer service skills. Solely on our experience here and the quality of food we were served, we will never be visiting Blanes again! If you are looking for good food in Hilo this is definitely not the place!

I am starting to like this Blanes location (there are 2 Blanes in Hilo). This one is set right in the middle of a parking lot by Lex Brodie's tire store so it's only a scenic location if you're into car repairs and asphalt. Apparently I kind of am. Their bulletin board has all kinds of posters I never see anywhere else, about drag races and car shows. Anyway, the first time I came here all burgers were 1/2 price so I was fine with that. The most recent time it was full price but still you cannot beat the burger with an egg and fries that I got for about $5. It was great for the money. We also got a slush float which was not cheap but was basically a huge cup filled with ice cream and icee, it was deliciously retro and they were kind enough to top it back off with some more icee when our ice-cream ratio got too dominant. Good basic plate lunch, haven't had anything here yet that wasn't solid for the money you are paying.

This place had good food but the portions are really small and they run out of food fast I don't know if it's all the time but they ran out of fried rice, hamburgers, pancakes and so that sucked and the customer service there was so horrible the lady who took our order did not know how to talk to customers she was rude and mean and the other worker kept making mistakes on people's orders and they were yelling back and forth while people were eating and it was very unprofessional.

Everytime I come home to Hilo, I need to make a stop here. For what? Just two things: a gravy burger and a strawberry slush float! Disclaimer: this review is only based on those two things. As I approached the registers this past Saturday, there was a sign saying "1/2 off burgers and slush floats". Holy hannah, is this my lucky day or what? Stoked on that, i ordered 2x gravy burgers (relax not both for me, although I totally could eat 2) and a small strawberry slush float for $4.14! Score! The girl with the small lip piercing at the register was really polite and very nice. I can always appreciate good service at a fast food or plate lunch joint. The homemade burgers are flavored perfectly, and the gravy poured in the middle is just the right amount so it doesn't get terribly messy and ooze all over. Wait, I take that back - it's not "just right" because I think they could totally slather more of that brown gravy on there. HA, piggy in me is coming out! And yup, that's all it is folks - patty, gravy, bunz. Don't expect no lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese stuffs. Those are all add-ons. And their slush floats are made with Icee. Although people will argue to say icees and slurpees and hush puppies are all the same. Um, no, Icee wins the slush game by far - says the slush snob. Ample bench/table seating at this location. Had some interesting creatures this day hanging out on a table but generally speaking, no one bothers each other so I found it entertaining to watch. Why doesn't Oahu pick up this super easy concept of making gravy burgers?!

Had the famous gravy burger here. It was just meh, I dont understand what all of the hype surrounding it is for. A little soggy for me, it was very messy trying to eat this. I guess its good for the price you pay; nothing too special.

The thing that turned me off right away was the cleanliness of everything. If we would have had more time (we only had about 30 minutes because we were on our way to horseback riding) we probably would have gone somewhere else. We had to both use the restaurant shortly after ordering and it was really gross. Barely flushed, there was a leak in the faucet, so there was a full bucket of water under the sink collecting the dripping, the floor was all wet and everything was just dirty. Additionally, I had to flush the toilet before I could use it and it started backing up to the point where I looked to see if there was a plunger, which there was. Thankfully I did not need to use it. That is when I started to pay more attention to things. The table we sat at (which hubby had already deposited our stuff at) could have used a good scrubbing and there were remnants of spilled soda/ice cream right in front of the window where you ordered. I get it, maybe it isn't the cashiers job to clean this up, but it wasn't busy - she was standing around the entire time we ate, so you or someone else should clean this up. And what concerned me, was that the customers can only see this - the outside of this restaurant - so if you don't care what the appearance is from the outside - what must it look at behind the counters? I didn't want to know at that point. We only ordered a Pepsi, fries, a burger and a salad. The salad was small, but not bad, there were a few leaves that were no good in it. The fries were decent, they were cooked well, not limp or soggy. The burger was meh, nothing special and McDonalds would have been better. I wouldn't go back here again.

It's all about the katsu, baby!! You want a massive plate lunch that's so packed with onolicous food that they gotta use a rubber band to keep the container closed? Blane's is the place to go! I got the chicken katsu and regular drink special and I wasn't able to finish the katsu. I had to throw a third of it in the fridge for later! The katsu is crispy, even after a 15-20 minute drive from Blane's to the house up the mountain. The mac salad was simple, but still tasted pretty good, and the rice was cooked pretty spot on. I also had a slush float, while not quite as good as Rainbows, it still went well with the plate lunch! The Good: Huge portions, delicious and crispy katsu, they know how to cook their rice. The Bad: They're only in Hilo, katsu is so bad for you but so gooooood! There's so many places to get a good plate lunch on any island, but if you find yourself in Hilo go and check out Blane's There's a couple locations, and the katsu is crispy and delicious! I'm looking forward to my next trip to Hilo to try more menu items!

We stumbled across Blane's as we were looking for Rainbow Falls. We liked it so much we came back a few times during our recent trip and will go out of our way to come back here again. Great Island cooking with local dishes as well as pretty much any other influence you can think of. If you can't find something on the menu you really aren't hungry.

Blanes is a great place, a true drive in where one can get a great Loco Moco at 4 am. Now if you dont know what a loco moco is then I am sorry for you. But for those not in the know it is a bowl with rice then a Hamburger pattie, two eggs then brown gravy, sounds odd but it is super tasty. Their Chicken katsu is one of my favorite things in the world, it lets me know I am truely back in Hilo. I would say when in Hilo swing into this little jem tucked away in the industrial area.

Every time I'm in Hilo visiting family, I have to stop by Blane's at least once, if not twice. I am obsessed with their Strawberry Slush Float and Teri Beef Loco Moco. It's soooo ono! I've looked everywhere in the LA area, and I can't find a slush that even compares to Blane's. The slush is dense without being think, and the vanilla ice cream is a great compliment to the yummy goodness. My husband had it for the first time over Labor Day, and he pointed out that there is this carbonated quality to the slush that I never realized before he mentioned it. I am telling you, the slush float alone is worth the side trip to this place! The best drive in on the island!

Some locals love this as an easy meal (take-out mostly). There are both mainstream (mainland-style) basic meals as well as Asian style - bento box and miso dishes, etc. Blanes has 3 (that I know of) locations in Hilo, all pretty much the same, and sometimes they offer daily specials a bit different than their standard menu. Chicken, pork, etc. Consistent. Like most places in Hilo, they are not open late (check hours!)

Question: Where can I get a good gravy burger in Hilo? Answer: Blane's. At least that was the answer my father-in-law got from my wife's cousin. Blane's is a good sized drive in. Their menu's pretty extensive and full of all kinds of Hawaiian food. Not a big fan of gravy burgers, I ordered the mix plate #3 (aka - numbah tree). It actually had a gravy burger in it, so I still got to sample it. The mac salad is chock full of mayo (more like mayo with a smidgen of macaroni). That's Hawaiian style, though. My mahi was fried, crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside. The fried chicken (like sesame chicken) was very flavorful and probably the highlight of the meal. Last, but not least, the gravy burger was surprisingly good. I actually enjoyed my gravy with the hamburger and could've eaten more of it. Everyone else in our group got a gravy burger (which is available in singe and double sizes). The good news is that they were pretty good (as burgers). The bad news is that gravy and burger buns don't get along too well. Almost everyone's burgers were falling apart from the soaked buns. That didn't bother me since I had a plate lunch. Service is decent and the food's made to order. Just be careful of their drink policy (don't drink and refill in front of the soda machine...which I did right before I read the sign asking customers not to do this. Oops!) Anyway, Blane's was pretty good in my book. I'll probably stop by again later during this trip to Hilo.

Do they still have their special -- grilled sourdough ahi sandwich with swiss cheese and sauteed onions and mushrooms? I didn't become a full vegetarian until I left the Big Island and this sandwich (well, and sushi... and poke...) is a big part of why. Get the ahi sandwich, fries and a milkshake. Then, I don't know, drive over to Akaka and walk around or something! By the way, I'm only vouching for this Blane's location. The one in Honoka'a is total crap.

A lot of my friends are originally from Hilo and when we would hang out they would always bring up the food from Blanes! So..I finally made it to Hilo and a trek to Blanes. The result? Eh..I don't get it...It's ok, but not wow'ing like they said? I went there with some friends, I ordered the mixed plate with Hamburger Steak and Korean Fried Chicken. Another friend ordered a similar and the other ordered the Teriyaki Beef. My mixed plate was ok, nothing wow-ing or something that would compel me to come again. The hamburger steak was a little dry and lacking a little flavor, but the gravy that accompanied it was very good. The Korean Fried Chicken was a chicken katsu (breaded chicken thigh and deep fried) and served with a lackluster garlic sauce that needed more flavor. My friend's Teriyaki Beef was dry and overcooked. That I think sums up my review of her plate. The prices are rather decent with mixed plates between $5 and $6 and regular plates about $7-8. The service is quick and decent. Overall, it is a decent place to eat at but nothing wow-ing that a lot of people cut it out to be....

Plate lunch, I thought this place was a bit more greasy than I would have preferred, but still good. I got the chicken katsu and it was pretty tasty! It seemed like all the locals come here and it was pretty steady.

Whenever I'm in Hilo, I make it a point to stop by Blane's and nosh on my favorite burger...gravy that is. Lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese....it's not needed on this burger. It's a homemade hamburger patty with brown gravy, in between a burger bun (no sesame seeds). Comfort food! I've tried looking for this same type of burger in Honolulu, but no luck. A friend of mine told me to just ask if they can throw some gravy on it. Okay, I'm not a gravy connoisseur, but it has to be "brown" gravy with the right consistency. I've seen all kinds of colors, textures and they're good in their own right, but its just not the same. Maybe its an acquired taste or just a bit of nostalgia, either way Blane's rocks the gravy burger. And if that's not your thing they have a big menu with something for everyone.

Today was my last full day in Hawaii. We had a few errands to run before finishing up the work we needed to do. A quick stop at Home Depot (which I may or may not review, technically if I were, I should be writting that review before this one.), to the Post Office and then since it was lunchtime we figured we would pick something up. Originally my Dad was going to go to Taco Bell, which isn't exciting or very Hawaiian, but it's cheap and quick. Well out of nowhere he asked if I wanted that or something else. I went for the something else and he suggested this place. I didn't know anything about it, all I was happy about was that we were eating someplace local and not a fast food chain. When I got there I had to take a minute to look over the menu a bit. I am not entirely familiar with what everything is: "Loco Moco" which I've seen once before and other stuff sounded interesting, but I should have had studied up before going to some of these places. My Dad suggested the chicken katsu, which I do enjoy and have had many times and have made many times. It was the safest thing to get. I got a mini of that as well as a small Saimin Deluxe. I had to ask the difference between that and the regular and once the girl behind the counter mentioned kamaboko, I was all over it. When we finally made it home and sat down to eat, I opened my saimin (took a few photos of that and my katsu. Will post upon my return to the mainland) and was a little disappointed. All I got was one thin slice of kamaboko. Not cool at all. The other extra's that made it a deluxe I really didn't care about. I mean most of the toppings other than the char siu, I really didn't care about. Even that was only a few tiny shavings thrown in. I still ate and enjoyed it, but next time I might ask for just those two items and more of it and just pay the difference. Of course who knows when I might be back. Oh well... The katsu was everything that I expected it to be. It was good, but I have had better before. The outer breading was a little tough when I finally got a chance to sit down and eat it, that was likely due to the long stop at Two Ladies Kitchen and the drive home. Overall I enjoyed my meal and glad we had that instead of Taco Bell, which I can have at anytime.

"K". I'll keep it simple. In 'Pidgeon English' - BROKE YO MOWT! Translation: The place is always busy. Food is always good. Go there. Eat whatever you like. I can guarantee you'll be full and your taste buds will be satisfied.

Food is decent, but... It was horrible to see employees cleaning the serving area, with detergent, while food is still being served. Plate lunch open, fries being bagged and detergent dripping all over the place!

  • Daniela A.

I definitely think Blane's is waaaayyyy better than the highly overrated cockroach-infested Cafe 100. You can get all of the same local fast-food, but it tastes better and is slightly more hygienic (clean enough, that I'll actually consider eating there as an alternative to Ken's, if I don't feel like sitting down at a restaurant- that's another good thing, they are either open until extremely late or 24 hours. I can't remember). They have everything from loco-mocos, chicken katsu, to milkshakes, to miso soup.. all kinds of great late-night comfort food.

    (4)
  • Richard J.

Decent but not fantastic. We probably should have ordered something else, like the grilled ahi rather then the fried mahi mahi which was really doughy. I was really hungry and I love me a good plate lunch. The mac salad was OK but not da best. I'd for sure go back and order something else!

Yummm. So, if you are looking for health food, maybe not. But if you want good, quick, local fare, then this is it. I stopped in several times during my stay in Hilo and had several different options off the menu. Don't know what to get? Choose the special and you should be happy.....just ignore the carbs and calories.

Tried the gravy burger, per my mom's request. She said they were known for it. I don't see the point, it was bland and needed to add mayo and ketchup just to have some flavor. Fries aren't great either, soggy and cardboard-with-salt-like. Wouldn't want to come back. Too many flies with the dining area being outdoors. Used their restroom while I was there as well, it didn't have hot water...I was scared of what I was eating after making that discovery, hope the back has hot water for the cooks to wash their hands. I feel like the gravy burger would be good if they added an egg to it, making it a loco moco on the go. Suggestion? -wink- -wink-

Teri-beef burger did not taste anything like teri. Took it back and got another burger that looked juicer but still lacked a lot of flavor.

Don't mean to give them 3 stars but they were out of 3 things we wanted to order and the portions were small. I ordered a mini hamburger steak. The patty was homemade and not the frozen kind that L&L has. The gravy and mac salad were also good. They had a good amount of pepper in the mac salad which I liked. The food didn't take that long to come out. I'll probably try them again. Maybe today was an off day for them.

OK drive-in food in an industrial area off the main highway in Hilo, but the service was lacking. The counterperson wasn't friendly, never smiled, never said "thank you" for our order and looked annoyed when we asked questions about the food. What is Korean boneless??? Beef, fish, chicken, pork? Your guess would be as good as mine... Need to step up the counter help because if they don't want to serve people, they really shouldn't be working at a drive-in. Not worth stopping here; you can find friendlier people, better service, better food, and better value elsewhere. And don't discriminate against me just because I'm not a Big Islander; I'm still local!
