This was the best Japanese food I've ever had. I can't elaborate any more. Seriously, I was ecstatically surprised. By all means, give them your business.

Even though I gave this place only 2 stars, it's important to note that the sushi was very good. The salmon nigiri was some of the best I've ever had, and the Ahi Poke was nothing short of incredible. The tuna nigiri was fair. Presentation - excellent. Unfortunately the rest of my dining experience was deplorable. The atmosphere was nice and quiet, and the staff were very nice. The waitress couldn't tell me anything (not even the brand or type) about the only bottle of cold Sake that they sell, and it is not listed on the menu. The sushi menu looks like a 9th generation photocopy from a Xerox machine in the 80's. Really, it was so bad I almost couldn't even read it. No photos of their sushi rolls anywhere, which help me get a better idea of what I'm buying. The soft drinks are bottled and the glass of ice I was given was half-full of water. But the topper was when we tried to leave and had to spend over 10 minutes at the checkout counter because their credit card machine wouldn't work. I think this place is worth a second visit if they can get the rest of their act together. Apparently they have been open for many years, though, and used to be called Imari. Sounds like it may be pot-luck for your visit, depending upon who the owner and chef are at the time. Give me a break!

Small out of the way... Good food... Lousy service. If your that busy to totally forget your customers, maybe you should make sure you are staffed better. The waitress forgot one of my dishes, forgot my husbands rice and took forever to bring drinks, my husband had to go hunt her down. They held us captive, by not letting pay and leave. Who ever runs this place needs to remember, good customer service goes along way.

We've usually been decently pleased with Waraku but today, the experience was absolutely horrendous. The wait staff was completely clueless, bringing duplicate orders to tables, completely forgetting others. Ordered 30 minutes ago and still no food. The ineptitude is at an all time high, so bad that I will not be coming back. Completely inexcusable. Update: now 40 minutes after placing order, wife still has yet to receive her dish. Hugely disappointed. Bento box that finally came, the steak was cold, so obviously had been sitting out. Now, almost 45 minutes later una-don finally came out.

A legit japanese sushi restaurant. They do not amercanize their food at all and I love it. Recommend their rainbow roll and their curry :) A small flan dessert always follows dinner. Yumm!! Only complaint is that their service can be a bit slow due to their lack of staff. Otherwise, a great place for good sushi in the Suwanee area.

This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in this "town"...and when I say town I mean all of greater atlanta. This is no small feat as there many great places but not with these prices. The prices for the meals for the quality they provide really is a joke. They really should be charging significantly more for what you get. Be glad they're not! But before I begin my endless gushing over the place I will go ahead and mention the one negative aspect about waraku and get it out of the way...and bc I love this place so much, it does not affect my 5 star ranking. Unfortunately, they have some turn over in wait staff but that's bc most of their clientele is Japanese and it's not in their culture to tip well...this makes it hard for any place to keep experienced staff. The good thing is that it's an easy fix...just tip well. 20 percent or more for the prices you will pay is more than justifiable. The head chef is the owner and Michelle always does an excellent and consistent job of preparing and presenting the food. My wife is pregnant right now and their cooked meals are just as fabulous as their sushi and sashimi. My wife is Japanese (2nd gen) and she loves this place as it reminds her of everything great about Japanese culinary and her mom's home cooking. If you want an authentic experience look no further. How do I judge their sushi? By freshness and I do this with one easy method. I order something with tuna...for something as popular as tuna you would think it'd be easy to keep this fresh but if you try raw tuna at almost any establishment you'll find that it's dry and lacking flavor. I have NEVER had this problem here...I am confident they keep their fish fresher than anyone as this is one of few places in atlanta that has never disappointed. One thing I will not review is their dishes. It would be unfair for me to talk about a few things when so much on their menu is incredible. I consistently have come here with my wife and friends for the last 3 years and it really has been amazing.

This is our regular lunch spot, we go there once a week. I usually get their 3 item bento box, it comes with miso soup, salad with sesame ginger dressing, rice and 3 items of your choice, and in the bento box there are additional fruits and appetizers as well. I like their tempura/sashimi/grill salmon/chicken teriyaki/fried chicken. Yummy yummy!

Sushi Chef Cheung does it again with his amazing sushi artistry! We paid a set price of $40.00 (per person) and requested for his "Sushi Surprise"......no restrictions on our part.....just do your magic! Amazing, we had sushi surprise of an edaname & seaweed salad, fresh abalone, sweet shrimp sushi with the traditional fried shrimp heads, another dish of the freshest tuna sashimi with ponzu sauce, then an amazing dome of fresh avocado. Inside of it was a creamed crawfish Wow! This is a truly " Foodie Find" and if you're in for a sushi adventure, see Chef Cheung and ask him for the "sushi surprise". Give him your set dollar amount you want to spend. He'll work with your budget and really enjoys the challenge.

We visited Waraku based on the reviews here and other sites. Waraku was decent, though there are better sushi choices in the immediate area. My wife is a vegetarian and while the menu does not specifically show any vegetarian rolls, the waitress told us they were happy to create some. They basically created some cucumber rolls which were pretty good. I went with a couple of the shrimp based rolls which were pretty good. Not great, not bad, just pretty good. That's basically theme of the entire meal. Just pretty good. The service was outstanding as the waitress was very attentive, extremely friendly and helpful. If the sushi itself was a bit more flavorful, we would probably become regulars. I don't think you'll get a bad meal at Waraku, but you can definitely get a better meal pretty close by.

I am extremely impressed by this place. Really good bento boxes which keep be coming back. Have been here serval times for lunch and they do a really good job with offering lots of lunch options for sushi, noodles and bento boxes. The staff is super friendly and the quality of the fish is top notch. I personally like the California roll, sashimi tempura bento and it is a perfect light very favorable tempura mix. My only complaint is that they don't offer green tea with the meal and that the dinner menu is basically the same bento boxes for more money as the lunch. Overall a total five star spot-

A good alternative for Sushi Mito. I definitely not expect that I could walk away with $11 including tips. Plus solid food, if you don't eat that much =) Well, it was kinda far away from my company, and lunch time is limited (11-2). But totally worth the travel. When I walked inside, the place was packed. The waitress was pre-occupied, yet kind enough to greet me. I hesitated for a while, and asked for a take-out. She's also honest to tell me that the wait is 10-20 min. Then I chose to sit down. On the two-page menu, you can get 2-item fir $8.80, and 3-item with $10.30(not exactly sure. What's surprising, some other entrées cost $8 to $9 mostly. To be honest, I've never seen the price like this for a long time. Eel rice, $9! Sashimi and grilled mackerel was what I ordered. It came with miso soup and salad. Miso soup was not so strong on the taste. Grilled mackerel was flavorful, maybe a little bit salty for my sensitive tough, and sashimi had 9 pieces, salmon, tuna and some white fish. In conclusion, waraku is a solid Japanese restaurant. Cheaper price, and smaller portions. I'm glad I found this gem.

Hidden at the back corner of a strip center, this authentic gem is a 'try.' I can't say 'must' quite yet though. They had cute decorations with Japanese manga comic books. Small restaurant but had enough tables to fit along with high ceilings and the sushi bar was open for customers to see the chef at work. There is also a TV in the open area. I ordered a simple 5 sushi bento box with tonkatsu (fried pork). It came with a salad, miso soup, tonkatsu and rice, 5 pieces of sushi, and some radish and orange. It was typical, nothing special on my end but I didn't want anything heavy. As for my friends, we had an assortment of orders from curry tonkatsu to volcano roll to okonomiyaki. I have to say the portion sizes are very generous. Rolls and the curry was great! Okonomiyaki however was a disappointment. It was burnt and too hard to eat. Maybe it was a hit or miss. But this place is worth a try if you're in the area!

It took them a very long time to make our food even though there was only one (or two?) table at the time. I ordered tonkutsu ramen which tasted just fine. Then pink ginger made the soup and noodle turn pink. I freaked out because this had never happened to me before at the time. My SO ordered sushi. He ordered one 1 set of tuna but they made him two. He decided to take them and not complain because the sushi was kind of small. We paid for extra sushi we didn't order because he ate them. Reasonable price.

This is a difficult place to review. I would give them 3 1/2 stars if such existed... Some areas of the experience were better than others so read my review versus just judging my star rating. So the menu didn't have any descriptions. There was literally the menu item name in English and Japanese, and that was it. :/ The Japanese pancake was okay. I didn't enjoy it as much since it was doused in a salty BBQ like sauce. Yeah. Oh. And my food was moving. lol! Well, it as moving because the steam from the food caused the flakes to sway back and forth. It just looked alive when it was brought out. The steak that was also ordered was lacking in size and substance. It was cut into mini strips, but there was nothing else served with it (i.e. rice). I almost forgot that they bring you out a hot towel to cleanse your hands when you first arrive. There was also fried potato sticks as a complimentary appetizer. At the end of your meal, there will be a mini flan item that comes out. That flan was pretty adorbs and good. :) The service here last night was pretty above average, aside from the minor confusion(s). I mean. Two different waitress asked twice if we needed more water. Um. How is it water if there was a Sprite bottle right there? Aside from this, our waitress kept asking us how well done the steak should be cooked since she seemed to have neglected to write this down after taking our order. Thereafter, she asked us about sesame seeds since there was a request to have it withheld from our meal. Yeah. Such forgetful employees. They were quite adorable and made jokes with us nonetheless and stopped by to see if we needed anything. Parking was pretty plentiful since Waraku was in a corner of a small strip of stores that weren't very buzzing with people. This area was dimly lit and didn't seem like it would have much foot traffic. There was a pretty good crowd that dined in though. For the sake of its authentic-ness, I will round my stars up to four. Maybe I'll give this place another go, but I left the place with mixed feelings and unsure how to compose this review.

Waraku's menu has a nice variety of authentic Japanese dishes and I've enjoyed several of those dishes in the past, but be warned that service and the speed of the kitchen decline proportionally with the size of the dinner crowd. Tonight was the 3rd occasion that I've had reason to dine at this pleasant restaurant, however it was the first time that I left the premises without food in my belly. Waraku's sushi menu is large enough, though I have noticed that a surprising number of the rolls rely on avocado, either as a filler or as a bow to prevailing American tastes. This time around, tasting was off the menu. After waiting nearly an hour for the delivery of two simple rolls I stood up and ambled toward the back of the restaurant (where our waitress stood nervously guarding the entrance to the kitchen like a hockey goalie). Abashedly and with great embarrassment and regret I announced that the Captain had pressing business elsewhere and must depart this place without waiting any longer for our Very Late and Possibly Forgotten Dinner. Before my waitress could respond, the young woman on duty as sushi chef spoke up and apologized and informed me that a party of 19 people had decimated the kitchen, but not to worry: my Volcano Roll was in the oven, and she turned to indicate a toaster on the shelf behind her. I found her reassurance curious, as I had in fact never ordered a Volcano Roll, and so informed her of this. The look of confusion on the chef's face was adorable, so to help smooth out the situation our waitress stepped toward chef and produced a little black book which had been secreted somewhere about her person and opened it to reveal MY sushi order form neatly folded into a small square and stapled to a page from her notepad. The chef didn't actually say anything but from the look that flashed across her face when she saw that order form seemed to say: "How in the name of The Great Green Arkleseizure do you expect that piece of paper folded up in your notebook to help me to fill this pirate's sushi order?". I thanked them both for their courtesy and departed the building. After reading a few reviews by others with similar slow server/kitchen issues I believe that it's important for Waraku to understand that it's best for them to inform their guests when the kitchen is running slowly. I am likely to give Waraku another chance at some point in the future, but for the next little while I will be avoiding this restaurant.

Wow Great service fantastic sushi. I got the best chirashi ever, with rare and fresh fish. First time here, I will be back! I highly recommend this place

Very decent and authentic Japanese food. Surprisingly good. Sashimi is very fresh and good quality. Even better than some restaurants when I was in Japan.

We haven't been here in at least a couple of years, so we came back to give it another try. While I like that this place is simple and nothing fancy, it's also the same reason we don't come here much. There's just not much to choose from. But, what we did get was good. If you like steamed eggs, I highly recommend the chawamushi. It's definitely one of the better ones I've had in the restaurants in the Atlanta area. Service though, not so good. Also of note: do not ask for extra things (like a bowl of rice or extra wasabi), they nickel and dime you!

One would think that if you go into a restaurant on a Sunday evening, with a table of 4, when there is only 1 other table with customers in the entire place, the food should come out pretty quickly. It did not. We ordered about $80 worth of sushi for a table of 4. We didn't get ANY of our food until 80 minutes later. That's right, it took us over an hour and a half to get food on table when there was only 1 other table seated. It wasn't the fault of the servers. They came by constantly to apologize and check on our food, which apparently was being made by the world's slowest sushi chef. Apparently they have a new sushi chef, but the chef made sushi previously at a restaurant in Buckhead, so he's not new to making sushi, just new to the restaurant. Not a valid excuse. The Sushi itself was OK, but nothing to write home about. We complained to the manager/owner. We got a half-hearted apology, with no effort to address or rectify the situation. Gwinnett County's food scene is growing with every week. The amount of good food, especially good Asian food, that you can find here is impressive now. There is literally never a reason to go to a place where you will wait over an hour for mediocre sushi on a day where they're not busy. Want sushi? Mori House is right down the street. Want ramen? Umaido is right down the street. Want authentic Japanese food? Head down PTI and go to Sushi Yoko. If you're in the restaurant right now and decided to pull up Yelp reviews, my advice is to go ahead and leave. I'm pretty sure you could leave, drive to another location, get seated, order, and still get food faster than waiting there.

This is my favorite sushi lunch spot. It is right down the street from work! They have an awesome lunch menu. Bento boxes, two choices from a list for $10. Comes with a salad, miso soup, etc. A lot of food for a great price. I always get the sashimi lunch special. The lunch specials come with soup and a salad. The people are always amazingly friendly and the food is fresh and comes out fast. I'm in love with the place =)

We have eaten here a few times and love it. Our other favorite is Sushi Ave. in Decatur. Waraku is SO friendly! and has very interesting dishes and great Sushi. They are even nice when we come in close to closing time.

This place is incredible! We showed up on a Saturday night to a surprisingly empty restaurant (but don't let that fool you) and our party of 8 was seated quickly in a private room. Our server was excellent. She was very nice and got everyone's orders spot-on. Food was delicious and reasonably priced too. Definitely must try if you love sushi!

This might be the best Japanese restaurant that I've ever been to. The atmosphere is thoroughly authentic. We were greeted with an "irasshaimase!" upon entering and shown to a spacious, quiet booth. The waitress brought us water, hot hand towels, and an appetizer of fried shoestring potatoes immediately. I was impressed to see a giant book of a menu, numbering many pages of hot, home-style Japanese dishes. In fact, each dish only had a brief English name followed by the Japanese name. This is not your standard "Japanese" restaurant that has a billion strange sushi rolls accompanied by some teriyaki and half-hearted udon. Waraku serves stews and ramens and curries and another multitude of dishes that I probably have never tried before. Their menu isn't online, but suffice it to say that it is extensive, and if you love Japanese cuisine you will undoubtedly find some dish that you love and can almost never find anywhere else. I got a bento box with grilled mackerel, which consisted of miso soup, a green salad, rice, a spicy tuna roll, an edamame and seaweed (?) salad, an orange, and the best grilled mackerel I've ever had. The soup was flavorful and filled with tofu and seaweed, while the green salad was made with actual leafy greens, not the flavorless iceberg lettuce most places serve. The spicy tuna roll came with a bit of tempura crunch and was made with tuna that was still intact as opposed to the mashed up tuna sludge that many sushi restaurants attempt to pass off as "fish." I still don't really know what was in the edamame salad, but it was excellent. Everything was flavorful and cooked just right. At the end of the meal everyone received a complimentary small, eggy flan. I had a TON of excellent food for a great price. Compared to Japanese restaurants in Chicago and Atlanta, I can wholeheartedly say that this is "as good as it gets!" We went on a slow Tuesday night, which is a shame because this restaurant deserves to be busy all the time.

To be fair, the food isn't as described Authentic, the sushi rice is very sticky, and the Raman has a bitter taste inside. I'll give it an Ok.

This is a follow-up to my review last May. Waraku has become my sushi choice for the US. I am cheerfully greeted and wonderfully served. I get to ATL only about every six weeks, but they remember me every time and I am now Bob-san. The sushi and the sushi prep are excellent and consistent; the hot foods I have had so far are food to dream about later - Berkshire pork belly, short ribs and more. They are open lunch and dinner. Don't go anywhere else. Bob-san

Not that impressed. Their air conditioning system drips on you if you're sitting at the sushi bar. The menu is not that easily interpreted, and random. The food was not at all impressive, but what can you expect in Suwanee,GA right?

Reasonably priced, good sushi. It's located near home so that's a definite plus. The staff is wonderful. Be sure to check out the lunch/dinner bento boxes. Good food at a great price!

I wanted to update my review in response to a few of the other reviews. Someone criticized the hot food they have, and this completely confused me. I wonder if they have the right restaurant -- the same reviewer said this restaurant is closed, which it is not. The real charm for me of this restaurant is the authentic full menu (not just sushi). The restaurant is geared towards their Japanese clientele, which is usually the majority of people there when we visit. You get the sense that the Japanese ex-pats are happy to have found a place that reminds them of home. Menu items often need translation, and I'm often surprised (pleasantly) by what comes out of the kitchen. I've visited Japan several times, and the food here compares favorably with the best I've had there. My favorites are: Fried agedahi tofu, fried oysters, the various skewers they have like bacon wrapped asparagus, and grilled chicken. Yum. You feel like you're at a family restaurant in the outskirts of Tokyo. My wife is a sushi fanatic, and sushi is what drew us here in the first place. Their sushi is certainly the best in NE Atlanta. It's in the handful of the best in Atlanta that includes Sushihuku.

The food is good, yakitori and other grill stuff are good, would be better if add a little more salt. Service is not good though. I ordered salmon rice ball, but the waitress brought salmon don which is not on the menu.

Great hole in the wall sushi bar. Quiet and unrushed! The sushi specials were authentic, not 'Americanized'. Will definitely be back!

Waraku is fantastic! We were regulars at another bigger, older Asian restaurant just down the road that's really gone downhill. We decided to give Waraku a try and were so glad we did. The staff were so friendly and our sushi was delicious and a work of art. This will be our regular place from now on!

My wife (who is Japanese) and I have been going to Waraku for years. It's the best Japanese restaurant in Gwinnett County. When you walk in you'll notice the large number of Japanese customers (a very good sign). The head sushi chef is Ottosan, and he is a master of his craft. Michelle is the owner and she'll cook you something wonderful from the kitchen. Everything on the menu is great. Enjoy!

My boyfriend and I went to Waraku for Valentine's as they were having a special fixed menu. For $30/person we had two entrees (beef and fish), four appetizers, a glass of plum wine and a chocolate cake. Everything was wonderful. All the staff was extra nice and took good care of us without being obnoxious. I would say that half of the customers were Japanese, which is always a good sign. Compared to other Japanese restaurants I've been around the country, Waraku offers pretty good sizes at reasonable prices.

My wife and I get here about twice a month. They have some of the best Sushi in the Suwanee area. The only reason they did not get 5 stars is because they are understaffed. Other than that, they are a great place to eat Sushi.

There are only a few authentic Japanese restaurants good enough to take my mom and Waraku is one of them (yes, she's Japanese). The first thing I love are the daily specials and I enjoy trying new traditional dishes. It's one of the few places that serve buckwheat soba and mugi cha. On a hot summer day, nothing compares. Each time I go, I specifically look to try a daily special and never been disappointed. My personal favorite is their tofu avocado salad. Yes, it's true, most of their clientele are Japanese which is a testament to authenticity. The portions are generous, I always walk out with take home and look forward to leftovers the next day. The staff are friendly and service is good. We're fortunate in N. Gwinnett to have Waraku.

UPDATE. OK, with my mother being quite informed (nosey), she learned that the main cook/chef/sushi master left Imari to pursue other ventures. So we went anyhow to see whether they could keep up with the past or perhaps even improve their dishes. Well, we were totally floored how downhill this place has gone. First of all, the menu has changed quite drastically, which isn't a big deal so we proceeded with our order. Then the downhill: the miso was watered down and had maybe one wakame (seaweed) floating and nothing else - come on we Japanese love SALTLY flavors. The chirashi was weak, with the sushi (rice) being just rice from the cooker and lacking topings. The veggie sushi plate was an insult with no makis (rolls) but instead an assortment of veggies on rice, with one having okra over rice.....uh? It was so pathetic that it was actually quite funny. The sushi assortment was....just OK. It had the Publix feel to it, if you get my drift. The fried squid was probably the only thing that was tasty. So yes, we won't be back unless they change for the better. It's sad to see the overall drop in flavor and taste. Even the waitress were hinting that things have changed for the worst. The atmosphere is splendid but the food is bland and .... far too expensive for what it is. I give it two stars since Rusans is the only place that is allowed to have just w'one star.

Since Sakana-ya closed down we've been trying to find a high quality classic, read real, Japanese restaurant in northern metro Atlanta along the I-85 corridor, a very crowded field. If you are in the Gwinnett Place area you can go to the very busy Haru Ichiban, or just inside the Perimeter off of PIB is the very busy Shoya, both good, yet expensive (relatively speaking), real Japanese restaurants. You can also go to Sushi Yoko of of PIB just north of I-285, although the service us usually fair to middling. On the other hand, if you live in the Gwinnett area Waraku is right up there in terms of quality and flavor and is a top choice for quality, traditional food at good prices. The place is smaller, the menu is not as extensive as some of the other restaurants, yet Waraku's menu is quite traditional and the service is typically very attentive and friendly. It's run by a husband and wife combo, and they do a great job. They will make reasonable changes in the menu, which is unusual for a Japanese restaurant. Prices are very reasonable. This is one of the two best Japanese restaurants north of the Perimeter along the I-85 corridor. Highly recommended.

Fresh sushi, great service. Freshest sashimi in the greater Atlanta area. It's hard to get good quality sushi, most restaurants do not have fresh raw fish that I would be comfortable eating. But, this place definitely had top quality seafood.

Came in during lunch with my wife. My food came out at the normal time. But my wife's food never came out. Waitress informed us it will be out shortly. An hour later, still nothing. It doesn't take long to cook teriyaki chicken plus the place was not even all that busy. We will not return to this restaurant. The one star was only for the tasty food they served.

Waraku is the best sushi restaurant north of Atlanta in my opinion. There aren't too many good sushi restaurants north of Atlanta to begin with so I'm thankful for Waraku. Delicious food at very reasonable prices. Great service. Pretty small restaurant. Plenty of parking. Kind of hidden in the same shopping center as Office Depot off of Lawrenceville Suwanee Rd. ~ sashimi platter - 6 different types of fish - all fresh & delicious ~ bento box - a great deal! you can pick 2 or 3 items, comes with soup & salad ~ fried baby octopus - crispy & yummy Can't wait to return to try out other items on the menu especially the ramen & omakase.

Big bento boxes & very tasty to boot. Spicy Tuna roll actually has a fresh little kick to it. Many customers seem to have been repeat patrons. Very friendly staff, including the Chef who paid a visit to our table. Location is quiet with plenty of parking outside and easy access to the highway. Only concern was the filthy soap bottle at the bathroom sink... I thought it was a very strange place for so much dirt...

Was really good, I dont even like shrimp tempura but I got it here and ate most of it. Took a star away for them forgetting my friends order and another star for the wait in general for our food. So all in all great food but service was average.

Waraku is a regular lunch spot for co-workers and I when I am in the office. This is authentic Japanese food and it is always excellent. I have never seen a better deal on food of this quality than the 3-item bento box. Choose 3 items from a long list including grilled mackerel, sushi, assorted tempura, sashimi, salmon teriyaki and more. Add on miso soup, salad and hot green tea for a grand total under $12 now THAT is a great lunch deal!
