I have been coming here for a couple years now and you can't go wrong with their burgers.

I've never not had a good time at Varner's. Except for that one time that I was with that guy and we played that game and things were weird. But that was about the guy, not Varner's. Even in the midst of that one time, there was a good time happening all around me. It's a big place with lots of seating options, including a separate smoking bar room. Good patio with big screen TVs for watching sports and sports-like things. Varner's is a popular team trivia spot, and last fall's October-fest "featured" a cornhole tournament (which we lost in the first round). I should probably mention the food--it's decent. The wings are good, which is what I usually get. The service is also good, which means they keep the beer coming at regular, timely intervals. Give it a shot. It's a fun sports bar that also appeals to families (as evidenced by the groups in the main, non-smoking dining room). P.S. If you go to Varner's to watch a UFC fight, keep one eye on the crowded bar area. There's bound to be one guy who thinks he's Georges St. Pierre and pop-off at some other guy who wants to be whatever-UFC-dude-who-thinks-he-can-beat-GSP.

The only saving grace about Varner's is the number of TV's they have going so you can see any game you like. The beer menu is not bad. The service in the dining room super sucks, but its the only smoke free area. The food is typical bar food.. not terrible but not great. Last time I was there, they had Team Trivia "BINGO" night, which was fun. My cousin won $5 in house cash, which they didn't let her use the same night even though she lives in Texas and would never be able to use it another time. So I don't think much about a place that won't make a customer happy over $5, especially when the service is bad to start with.

I should have known when I met my girlfriends for apps and drinks that we were in trouble when I saw it was poken night, AND kids eat free that night. So what does that mean? You have your choice of eating at the smokey bar, or braving children rolling around on the floor between tables while their drunk parents are unaware that their kids are being a nuisance. I must say though, what a great marketing idea by Varner's!! Service, great. Our waitress seamed relieved that we had no children. =) Drinks, yum, and great selection. Dessert, well, who can resist housemade red velvet cheesecake?

3 stars is a stretch, but they have cheap beer (if you can tolerate admittedly awful beer) and decent specials. Pretty much what I want out of my neighborhood bar. I come here after my softball games to have a pitcher with friends and catch a game on TV. The patio is nice, especially considering how smokey the inside is, but not a deal killer [for me] if I have to go inside. Service is hit-or-miss. You may be waiting a while for that Genny Cream Ale, maybe not. Waitstaff is friendly, though. Food specials are decent. I like the habanero wings, but they destroy me the next day... Since it's not kid friendly anyway, some of the trashier clientele may or may not bother you. My friend nicknamed the previously mentioned, foul-mouthed woman who frequents the bar, "Miss Classy". All-in-all, most people tend to keep to their groups or sit at the bar, but you get a couple characters in there. Bottom line - glad it's here and it can be cheap.

I will say that varners isn't a very diverse place. I love going there on monday's because they have great wings that are buy 1 get one free. They have good drinks and plenty of TV's. They also have a pool table if your in to playing pool..

I akin this place to a Taco Mac, in its heyday. You can smoke inside, at the enormous bar, but there is no smoking in the family area. A huge patio with t.v.'s to watch the Braves game. We went to Vintage Tavern beforehand to check it out, but we tried the wings here at Varner's with tater tots and they were the SHIZZLE! Lots of games, t.v.s and trivia - a winning combination in my book! Two thumbs up ;) Place is a lot bigger than portrayed in the photos.

I went there with my family for dinner around 5pm, it was decent food at a decent price. I went back about 2 years later with 4 friends around 9pm. The dining room was empty, so we figured we had to sit in the noisy bar. Ok, quick meal - I can deal. Now, I've been a server before so when I see 5 people who look newly 21, I'm thinking big table-big bill-big tips, but I suppose the servers here think differently. I mad eye contact with 2 bartenders, but still, no one greeted us. After 20 minutes of sitting without anyone acknowledging us, I went up to the bar to ask if we could be helped. The older blond women acted clueless and asked if we were sitting in the dining room (when she watched me walk from my table where 5 pairs of hungry eyes had been staring at her). Whatever. I sat back down and waited. 10 minutes later, a younger gentlemen ran by and said he was on his way out, but he'd grab our drink orders and inform our waitress we were ready. 20 minutes after that, NO drinks, NO waitress, NO acknowledgment what-so-ever. You wouldn't need to plan so many events to bring customers in if you'd help the ones who were already there! There's no way I'd try this place again.

We had dinner here last night with a restaurant.com coupon. I had the French Dip with a baked potatoe. My husband had the Philly Cheese with onion rings. This place has a huge bar area with booths and tables. That seems to be where all the fun is happening but the smoke was so thick that I couldn't eat there. I really regret that. The "family" dining area was okay, I guess. Our server was friendly but a little ditzy. She may have been new because she couldn't answer any question without going to ask someone. Our food was just ok. I've had a lot more meat on a French Dip before. The baked potatoe was really good and they served it with real butter. My husband liked his Philly Cheese okay. The onion rings were really tasty and lots of them but pretty greasy. Yes, they have lots of choices for beer. Will we return? Probably not because there are better sportsbars closer to home.

Huge selection of beer. Huge bar. Huge patio. Huge place overall. But, huge amount of douchebag thugs frequent this place, enough to make it downright depressing to go inside. The bartenders are all friendly, easy going, but you can't get away from the hoodlums who seem to live here 24/7. If the bar is great but the patrons suck, the bar sucks. Sad too, it's close by and I'd eat here more if it wasn't so run down already.

I dont know how you could find a place that has a more dynamic atmosphere. There is main dining away from the smoky bar, as well as a bad ass bar right in the middle, pool tables, dart boards and a wide variety of beers. I always have great service from Aaron, the bartender when I go, I think because I always go alone and he feels bad, but regardless, it's great. Everyone there is so friendly and you will always end up meeting someone. Awesome place to go on a weeknight or a weekend with great food and great drinks.

So far so good. Been there only twice, but seems like its a good choice for a sports bar. The food was pretty good and the beer list is great. Not too far from my house so that's a plus of course. Will be checking it out during football season.

We just ate here for the first time this past weekend. I had a cordon bleu sandwich that I thought was very good. My boyfriend had the smoked chicken philly which was also good. The wait staff was very attentive. A plus was that we had a buy one get one free meal coupon. But even without the coupon, it was reasonably priced. I would definitely go back again.

oh, where to begin. they do have a pretty good draft beer selection. however, unless you're camped out near the taps, the bartenders aren't great about asking if you want another drink. well, the blond female bartender is horrible. the others are so-so. wait staff...in a word...stinks. it's like they go out of there way to not serve you. they treat an empty glass like a bomb about to explode, so they steer very clear of you. some of the food is ok, but it's one of those places that tries to do too much food-wise. ok...and last....but CERTAINLY not least...if you're going to sit in the bar area...brace yourself...there is a female regular there who is THE BIGGEST, foulest loudmouth i have ever encountered. i'm pretty sure she is there every night. her voice volume is always on scream and she swears constantly. she is truly the biggest reason why i will never go back there. if she was never there again, i might give them one more star, tops.

Second review of this place and it's actually becoming a regular. The food was "better" then what I've had and service in the seating area is better as well. The beer selection is fantastic and the food menu is huge. Something for everyone to like. I would say that they could not be so "stingy" with their food. The Philly Cheesesteak had next to no meat on it at all, and the chicken nacho's had no meat either. My friend had the buffalo burger and loved it, they do give you lots of fries though! :) Don't come here expecting service to be great because it's not, if your nice and friendly then you receive the same. If your not, then hope you don't order food. Overall it's a nice place to hang out with friends, drink, eat a little, and watch a game.

Love this place! Anytime I'm up in Smyrna I stop by. They do trivia a lot, tons of TV's, pool, arcade games, smoking and non smoking. The chicken Caesar salad is surprisingly good. The chicken is very moist and tender. The place is huge and great for groups. If Sam is working as bartender, ask him about beer, he knows all! The drink and food prices are very reasonable too.

I love this place. The beer selection is awesome, food is good and if you need an experienced bar tender, ask for Sam. He's very knowledgeable and always takes good care of his customers.

Unfortunately, this is a disappointing experience. We went here to partake in some trivia and thought it would be worth the effort to drive here based upon the favorable reviews I have read here. Unfortunately the experience left me unimpressed . The restaurant appeared to previously be shit-hole TGI Friday or Ruby Tuesday. The interior had that kind of feel to it. The bar area looked as though it had more of the action and the bar seemed reasonably nice and capable of a large crowd. I hung around the bar for a short time but had to go back to the non-smoker section after inhaling too many cigarettes. We started with an appetizer of buffalo wings. I am not certain why these were fried and not really flavored at all with any buffalo sauce. The server gave us a choice of celery sticks or fries, which seems to be a bit odd. Usually wings arrive with celery and/or carrots sticks, I knew I was in for a disappointing main course whatever I order, After deciding between a roast beef sandwich, burger or one of their skillets. I decided I would shoot for the chicken fajitas. Let's just say I wasn't too thrilled with it. There seemed to be an over-abundance of old lettuce, jalepeno peppers and cheese. The onions and peppers seemed to be cooked unevenly and the chicken was dry. When you order fajitas at most places, you get salsa and cream cheese as topping choices. It doesn't seem to happen at Varners. The reason I gave this spot 2 stars is that the brownie-ice cream dessert was decent. But my suggestion would be to look elsewhere for food.

Perfect local watering hole! Varner's has the best draught beer selection in Smyrna (48 taps!), their wait staff is the friendliest around, and the food is great (for pub grub at a fair price - clearly this is not a fine dining restaurant). This is a place full of regulars, "where everybody knows your name" - which makes it a wonderful place to visit. Be sure to check out their specials and events - they always make the dining experience more fun. We love trivia on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Bingo on Sundays, and live bands on Saturdays. You never have to pay a cover for the music, and the games are always free to play. If you're looking for a classy night on the town, go somewhere else. But if you want a pub full of camaraderie, hearty laughs, tons of craft beer choices, all the games and fights on TV, and good ol' greasy bar food, then this is the place to be in Smyrna.

    (5)
  • Jim R.

It's not a bad place at all. Staff is polite, food is good and Sunday evening bingo nights are fun. Drinks were a little pricey - and don't bother asking for top shelf... it's a huge up charge. Overall, it's worth checking out.

My son and my friend and I decided to try this place on a Wednesday evening after work, and I must say they have really great burgers! The craft burger are $5.95 on Wednesdays, served with French fries ( not bad huh) and they offer a nice variety of craft burgers. The kid ordered chicken tenders and a brownie sundae ( delish ) all of the food was great. The service was a little shaky, we had the most confused and missing waitress ever. I believe she took on to many tasks at one time because the service was bad, friendly but bad. The people across from us had to go find someone to get water. I heard them complaining as well. I'm probably sure that what I'm about to say has absolutely nothing to do with the restaurant or maybe it does because someone could have told him to sit his ass down and shut up, but when we walked in it looked like some people were setting up to play poker in the restaurant area, which was cool, I had no problem with that, but there was a gentleman with the porker crew whom treated the restaurant like it was his home. He was watching a basket ball game on the flat screens up front where they were playing poker, and he was literally standing up and yelling at the TV throughout our entire meal. It was awful, just awful. My friend and I could not even have a conversation or enjoy our meal between searching for the waitress and looking at this clown every time he started yelling. The waitresses & greeter seem to have been acquainted with him already, so they just smiled. Words of advice: Control your regulars/ don't allow them to take over your restaurant. The bar area seemed fun, a lot of very handsome bearded men were gathering In that area as we were leaving. Which means I will check out the bar area on my next visit. Lol. Food: Thumb's Up Service: Thumb's Down

What can I say about this place that won't be too negative?? Oh, I do like their beer selections, but that's about it... The service was mediocre, and the food was a meh... Do not order their grilled chicken salad - it was massive!! The Balsamic Vinaigrette was just "thick" and not smooth or runny like most dressings. I then asked for the Italian dressing thinking I'd get a better deal but that too was a "thick" dressing. I then decided to venture to my only saving grace, my grilled piece of chicken... Even my grilled piece of chicken had no flavor whatsoever! Seriously?? Overall, I was so disappointed in this salad... Yes, I know I was at Varner's, a tavern, but it doesn't mean the food has to be terrible! I even tried my husbands "swimming wings" and I was not impressed either :(

Varners is an odd little mixture of family restaurant and bar. You walk in to a large, open foyer/hostess desk area that is almost as big as the bar itself. If you take an immediate right, you can go through a door into a glassed-in bar area, filled with smoke and dominated by a long old-fashioned bar right in the middle of the room. If, instead of turning right, you head straight back, you'll run into the dining room, which sits galley style along the back of the building. The whole place has an outdated feel, kind of dark and dominated by dark wood booths and furniture. The night we went was MMA fight night, trivia night, and college football all in one, and yet the place was half-empty. That's never a good sign on a Saturday night at any restaurant, but Varners is definitely going for a sports bar-type vibe, so 8 p.m. on a Saturday should be high times. Luckily, this meant my date and I were able to snag a booth on the back wall of the restaurant without any problem. Our server was friendly enough, and the beers we ordered from their extensive menu came back pretty promptly. The beer selection was by far my favorite thing about Varners, almost (but not quite) excellent enough to merit a fourth star. We planned to stay a while to watch the sports and chat, so both of us drank a couple of beers before we ordered food. The server was attentive enough that we never had to wait, but not so frequently present that we felt awkward for not ordering food yet. Eventually, I ordered BBQ nachos and he ordered the BBQ sampler platter. Both were just fine, A-OK as the review says. Nothing to write home about either way. Overall, the restaurant was fine but forgettable. If you're in the area, it would be a decent place to stop in for a meal, but don't expect fireworks.

Monday night Wings are BOGO, they are hot, juicy, crispy, && bigger than your average wing joints. Also comes with choice of fries, tator tots, or celery/carrots. All their sauces are made in house. Friends favorite is lemon-yaki , mine are habanero for heat && garlic Parmesan. It actually taste heavily on the garlic && the Parmesan is shredded on top they come out super crunchy. Great place for family, BUT the best servers are in the bar. If you reside in the "Smynings" area it's hard not to make it a routine to go there weekly after you had it once. We definitely have && enjoy being friends / family there too!

I recently discovered that Burgers here are also very, very good and they are value priced at $5 for lunch M - F, and 5.95 (all day) on Wednesdays. I upgraded my review from 3 stars to a 4 stars. I also fixed the typo regarding my remark about the boneless wing sauce (i.e. "wing sauce" as opposed to "salad dressing" being "too think" [as per Ryan M's critical - but erroneous - remark in his review / referring to my previous review]).

What's happening to this place? They need a little quality assurance to make sure their food is still good! Why is the meatloaf drowned in gravy that you can hardly make out the mashed potatoes and toast underneath? Is anyone running this place? Do they know how to train servers? Isn't taking an empty appetizer plate standard long after the entrees are served? Also had to remind her to please bring us our beers. Some positives. Kids won at the claw game and a round of bingo! Great beer selection. Just needs some TLC from management.

Great local bar, love the layout, friendly staff, open late unlike a lot of the local spots that close early whenever possible.

  • Gabrielle S.

The place is okay, the food is pretty decent. The prices are pretty comparable. The service is a little slow, but not bad enough to deter me from going again. Friday's, kids eat free so that's for me!

  • Scott S.

Very solid. I had not been in years before going this past Friday and I was pleasantly surprised. Very good bar food, nice server, and reasonably priced. Huge draft beer selection. Kids eat free on Fridays! The interior is dated and the entry foyer is super dark for some reason, but it was an overall positive experience.

Oh my gosh this place is gross. I wouldn't eat here if it was free. We use to play trivia here and the food was ALWAYS AWFUL. Don't eat here.

Varners is a good choice. Great place to watch football games and meet some cool folks. The food is good and the staff is friendly. It gives you that everyone's always glad you came type feeling. Ive been there alone and with friends either way I had a good time. Looking forward to my next visit. Cool spot!

  • Kim E.

I wish it was a good place to eat, but I am so disappointed in the food every time I go. I have tried a lot of different dishes and every time they miss the mark completely. I am not sure if the chef just does not care or if the chef has no idea how to make decent food. They need to hire someone that knows how to cook. I have tried things and I think "I will order this, because there is no way to mess this up", but guess what? It is not good, ever. Why can't our neighborhood restaurant have decent food? Maybe if I was drunk and it was 3am, I would like it.

    (1)
  • Janey T.

Great neighborhood bar! They have over 60 beers on tap and the staff is knowledgable about all of them. Best part is that they host the Smyrnadelphia Eagles, which are the best fans here in the city. You can always count on the food being fresh and tasty too!

  • Harvey S.

Great restaurant if you're in the mood for bar food like wings or burgers. Lots of space and no wait. And as others have mentioned great beer selection. The Kroger next door has free entree coupons on the receipts.

Food poisoning from this place last weekend. Yes the beer list is great but the food really isn't worth that experience.

  • mark b.

A dirty, smoky, smelly place. Maybe the most unfriendly staff I've encountered in a long time; they were bordering on antagonistic. It started with the 3 staffers working at the front desk where you enter. They could barely be bothered to look up from the phones when we entered. Only 5 customers 90 minutes before Super Bowl and no game specials. Most of the TVs weren't even on the pregame stuff. The whole place has a stuck in the late 70s, dark wood, beer stained floor, depressing loserville vibe.

I've been here twice and had two completely different experiences. The first time, I had a vapid waitress who couldn't recommend anything to order from the menu. ("All is good," I believe she said when asked what she could recommend to a newbie.) She stared at us when we asked a few questions about some of the sandwiches and then was like "Oh, I don't know." Also, there was no greeting at all here for our family of three from her. No, "Hello, welcome to Varner's." No, "What can I get for you." Homegirl just stood at the end of our table and looked at us until we were finally like, "Hi, are you our waitress?" I guess all of the makeup she had on was impacting the blood flow to her brain. Either that, or she was on a mess of drugs. Food was good enough -- typical bar food, hot and arrived quickly. Spicy chicken sandwich, supposedly made with wing sauce was barely spicy at all. Fine. The second time, we had a fantastic waitress. She was very warm and personable, and even gave our child a small stuffed tiger from the game room. She was very knowledgeable about the sandwiches, told us her favorites, and we ordered based on her recommendations. Our order was correct, our food was hot and quickly arrived despite a busy dining room. We used a BOGO coupon (really, the only reason we went a second time) and she was totally cool about it. We left her a big tip, as she was awesome. We saw vapid girl working the other side of the dining room and shuddered. Homegirl was straight out of Valley of the Dolls again. Sigh. With that said, I don't know that I'll return. They seem to have a huge bar, kids eat free on Fridays, etc. But I don't want to risk the weird interactions we had the first go-round. And the hostess staff both times was way too interested in themselves to be a welcoming presence to patrons.

My visit to Varner's was fraught with all sorts of disappointment. And the weird thing is, none of it was really Varner's fault. It wasn't Varner's fault that an annoying ewok jumped in line and unscrupulously snagged our table when management wasn't looking. Varner's tried to make good by offering my friend an adult beverage. But when I later tried to *order* the same adult beverage, they were out of it. And that really can't be helped, can it? It wasn't Varner's fault that the whole table shenanigans-ewok-thing resulted in us getting the next available table with no staff knowing who would serve us. (Okay, maybe that was Varner's fault.) And as a result of that, it took a doggone long time for us to get a drink. And Varner's was well and truly slammed, so it took a dang long time for our food to come to the table. And then they brought me the wrong drink. (A beer apparently has a similar name to a cocktail.) I can't really blame them for that, even if it was freaking annoying. And it wasn't Varner's fault that--well... I think I'll spare you any description of the restroom. But that isn't really their fault either, is it? I mean, I wouldn't expect a tavern to hire staff to check on the facilities after each and every poorly-toiled-trained redneck destroyed the place, you know? So why am I sticking with three stars instead of two? Varner's does a really good job with keeping smoker's smoke contained and out of the way. And amidst all the other usual "pub food" offerings, my Smoked Sampler Platter was really, very good. (Even if I had to ask three times to get some toast to go with it.)

This is my second visit to Varner's for trivia and honestly, it was not bad at all. The place was not uber crowded and the food was pretty good. I ended up ordering the Big Al's burger once more because I just love portobello mushrooms in my burgers. The burger was really big and tasty along with a huge serving of fries. The burger was cooked medium well and ginormus....there was so much food I couldn't finish. The beer menu was pretty decent and they were actually highlighting my favorite beer Ephemere, so I automatically ordered that. I will have to say that I think that the reason it was in the front of the menu was because the beer may have been going bad because it tasted a bit off.....this is my only complaint. After that I ordered Le Fin Du Monde...love this beer as well. Anyway, the trivia was basically the same as last time... just a little dry and it kinda lacked feeling, but that is what you get when you go to places where the hosts don't write their own questions. Our servers were really nice and really patient with our indecisiveness as well as our rowdiness towards the end. Either way it was a great place for trivia especially since it was not crowded at all. #365Yelp 47/365

It was alright, I went Wednesday for the 5 dollar cheeseburger. It was a decent burger couldn't complain for the price. The service was about as bad as I expected it to be. There were enough TV's to keep my attention however it in no way could compete with Taco Mac. I guess if you really want a cheap decent burger and it's Wednesday seek this place out.

This place is great. Every town needs a hole in the wall with good food. The food and service have always been great. My only issue is during the summer the place is hot. Almost too uncomfortable to eat in side hot. Sad to say my husband and I avoid Varners during the hot months, but enjoy it when it gets colder.

I had such low expectations of this place due to my lack of enthusiasm for bar food. But we wanted to play trivia, and this place seemed like the only place where it had enough seating. Thanks to my low expectations, it turned out better than expected. Going inside, I felt like something transported me back to the 90's. I think the building used to be a Ryan's. And like every kid of my generation growing up in suburban Atlanta, we went to Ryans a lot. It felt very familiar to me. The hostess even asked me if I wanted to sit in the smoking or non-smoking section. I haven't been asked that since... well, the 90's. Also, the atmosphere didn't seem so "bar-ish." Maybe because I saw kids in there. The atmosphere felt more laid back, mellow, and family-oriented. Perhaps I should try coming on a weekend and see what type of derelicts come. They don't have much TVs. Since I went there to mainly play trivia, that didn't matter. But if I wanted to go there to watch a game or a fight, I would imagine it would be quite uncomfortable. The food tasted okay. It did taste better than I expected though. I got the fish tacos, and they didn't seem terrible. I also had the taste of the ruben sandwich and that tasted average (but not horrible) as well. They also had a big beer selection. Like someone else mentioned in the reviews, they don't list as much beer as Taco Mac, but it looked big enough. The staff seemed very friendly to me. They did seem understaffed though. It didn't look that busy, but the servers warned us how busy they were. I didn't have a problem with their service though. I would come back here again. The menu and food is not high quality, but so far it looks and taste as the same as your standard bar. I think the food might even taste better than most bars I've been to. I would give it 3.5 stars since I expected a lot worse.

Went for wings on Saturday. Sat outside which was nice but smoking is allowed so there's that. Wings were big and well cooked. Hot was not very hot and had a weird sweetness to it. Had the sauce been more classic, the wings would have been awesome. That being said, half off wings on Monday makes this place worth the visit. Rest of the food was pretty average. Service was friendly and attentive.

Ugh... I've been to Varner's many times over the last 3 or so years, because they are one of the few places in Atlanta that does trivia on Saturday nights. During that time, I've had my experiences go from good to acceptable to "we're never going back, not even to drink and play trivia." The food has really gotten terrible, even for bar food. How do you screw up chips and salsa? Eek. The service is really sketchy and weird (think a bunch of high school students and townies who have no incentive to actually serve the customers). The last two times I went, ordering a drink was painful. They were out of everything and their blender was broken. I'm not talking about being out of obscure liqueurs, I'm talking about being out of basic ingredients that are in their advertised house specials. So I had to get a beer. The food did not make up for it and the service most certainly was bad, so we decided to stop torturing ourselves and quit Varner's. Time to find a new trivia spot!

i live very close to Varners and i've been disappointed several times. finally decided to no longer patronize them. Most times service is awful. the food is subpar. you know when you receive salsa in a plastic container and stale tortillas on a pizza pie pan that there isn't much to look forward to. if you are looking to drink in the bar, you will probably be satisfied, but if you are looking for a decent meal with your family, choose elsewhere.

I'm there for lunch only. I like to play Keno and Taco Mac doesn't have it. The drinks are generous, the food is pretty good. I like the rotisserie wings and also they make a great cheese burger wrap. It's really too much food and I wind up taking it home. My only issue is that from time to time there is a posse that comes in and demeanor is loud and profane. When they show up, I usually leave. Nevertheless, I keep going back. The place is totally casual, lots of TVs around and the bar tenders seem to know that you don't always want company. They're attentive but keep their distance which is what I like. There is the bar area which I prefer but also a dining area which caters more to families and business people. I've taken clients there on occasion and the place works pretty well for whatever you need.

We found this place ages ago when we moved just over a mile away, and it's become a staple in our weekly plan, mostly for the trivia, but the food/drinks aren't bad either. The staff, once they know you, and provided you're a pretty standard eater like the hubster is, will know what your appetizer, drink, and meal order is going to be weekly, which is always a nice touch. The food is typical pub fare and isn't anything to write home about, and I've found that on occasion some of the fried options can definitely do a number on me and my stomach and I'm not normally one who has a particularly sensitive stomach. This seems to be a hit or miss issue, and fortunately only seems to happen very rarely, and I've learned now what foods to avoid to somewhat prevent this. Husband is a bigger fan than I am, always orders the fried buffalo wrap with extra hot sauce and a Strongbow. The prices, especially when you have a restaurant.com coupon or a coupon from one of the circulars or coupon mailings that seem to float about every once in a while, are very reasonable. They do seem to do a lot of special events (trivia 3 days of the week, poker, now bingo, a lot of sports-oriented watching events, etc.), so if that's your cup of tea, you might be interested in it. I'd say, Varners doesn't necessarily merit a drive for a visit, but if you're in the area and are looking for some standard pub-like fare, Varners is a decent option for you.

Varner's is a place that has a little something for everyone. The main dining area has a lot of families. The menu has a decent amount of variety. I've only had the sandwiches and burgers, but I have enjoyed everything I've tried. They also have a great selection of beers on tap. They are no Taco Mac, but they have at least a couple dozen beers on tap aside from your standard selections you'd find everywhere else. And Strongbow is $3.75 for a pint, which is the cheapest I've seen anywhere and alone earns a star. While the families are enjoying their food in the main dining area, there is a bar area with lots of seating area separated off from the main restaurant, where you can go to escape the kids. It is quite smoky in there though. There's also a large patio but its too cold for that right now. I first heard of Varner's when they started running a Friday night poker doubleheader. The first game starts at 8:00 and the second at 10:30. I'd recommend Varner's to anyone in the NW burbs looking for drinks and good food.

Quick and attentive service. Better-than-average bar food. Against my better judgement, I ordered their BBQ sandwich and was pleasantly surprised. One thing to keep mind. Evidently, this is an Eagles bar, so of you want to catch the Falcons there, make sure that Philly isn't playing at the same time.

Totally cool place, went there last night. Went alone but stll enjoyed my time. The people were all nice, very personable crowd. So, I walked in and had a seat at the bar, service was prompt, I had a menu in front of me as I came to sit down. Well, let me tell you, it was one hell of a beer list. If you're a beer fan, you will like this place. So many beers to choose from, it was impressive. I ordered my drink and it came fast, that was a good start on my relationship with the 'tender. So, after a drink and a smile, I took a stroll around the place, over to the pool room. There were only two tables, but luckily it wasn't that busy on a Monday night so I sqeezed in a game or five. Miraculously, I won five out of five games... wanna take me on? There were also many screens with sports on, but by the time I came back to the bar (three beers later) I had severe difficulty counting the exact number of screens. I guesstimate roughly 14-16 of them. Yes it's true, if you wanna get me drunk, it won't cost you much. This is a place I'd love to go to again, it was really nice. I think the place was really warm, and what made it really awesome was the super cool service. Thanks Terrin! Varner's gets slapped with five stars for awesome service and atmosphere. AHHH!!! And I almost forgot, FREE POOL on Monday nights, all over it.

this place was awful! i live within a couple miles and finally stopped in when i had a restaurant.com coupon to use. it wasn't even worth the $7 we each paid using the coupon. i had the chicken fajitas which were no seasoned at all. all of the onions were blackened, the side of black beans were incredibly bland, and the cheese offered on the side was "dusty" looking from sitting in a large bag (pre-shredded cheese by the bulk). my friend ordered fish tacos which were supposed to have a mango salsa and yet there was NO salsa. she had the same dry bland black beans as a side. i assume they make awesome wings cause the place is packed nightly, but our food was awful. the service was good at least.

Not very impressive. TV ads and FLyers make this place out to be more exciting than it really is. Food was okay and service was alright. I would ask that the waitress chew some gum before coming back from her smoke break.
