Food = 4 Price = 3 Experience = 3 (terrible location... i watched them take out the trash outside the window of my booth... for the whole dinner. Gross!

Was really happy we found this place through yelp. We started with egg rolls and dumplings. The egg roll didn't come with sauce and we thought the plum sauce on the table was weird....but that is my only complaint. Our service and food was great. Entrees were Mongolian Beef and Dragon Horse Chicken. We will definitely be back.

Maybe closer to 3 1/2 stars. The food tasted fine - actually, seasoned a lot less than your typical Chinese fare but that was fine to cut down on the unnecessary sodium. We ordered Kung Pao chicken and tangerine chicken to go. The person up front was nice and our wait was not even 10 minutes (week night). Much like what many other reviewers have stated, you actually feel like you're eating something healthy which is a plus. However, the food is definitely overpriced. We ended up paying $35. Yes, a little steep but I guess it wasn't too bad considering that I could tell it was all white meat chicken and that it was actually CHICKEN, not mystery meat!

My coworker wanted Asian for lunch so I yelped for the closest Chinese restaurant in the Cobb area. House of Chan popped up and we decided to try it out. The restaurant is kind of difficult to see from Cobb Parkway. It's located at the end of a little shopping center that is located in a larger shopping strip mall. The restaurant is on the smaller cozy side as there are probably about 10 booths, and maybe less than 10 small tables. As soon as we sat down, a server came by with water, hot tea, and a complimentary bowl of the sliced fried egg roll wrapper chips and those were good. It was lunch time on a weekday so we were given the lunch menu. We ordered: - GENERAL TSAO CHICKEN: my friend ordered this and she liked it. I know it's not the super Americanized Chinese Food from the Mall Food Courts that she's used to and she wasn't expecting this version from House of Chan. The pieces of chicken were lightly fried and cooked in a somewhat spicy sweet sauce. There were also a few pieces of broccoli and red & green bell peppers. She ordered hers with fried rice. In my opinion, if she healthier version of the typical General Tsao Chicken. I wasn't a fan of the fried rice. - BLACK PEPPER CHICKEN: I ordered this since it seemed like a popular item from what I saw on Yelp. As the General Tsao Chicken, the chicken in this dish was also lightly fried. The sauce is similar to the sauce in general tsao chicken, but no pepper flakes were added. I had my dish with white rice. Overall, with our orders, I think they taste very similar. The food is good, but not the best I've had in Atlanta. I must say though that House of Chan's dishes taste very healthy. I didn't feel "heavy" after my meal. Service was good. Everyone was really friendly and our water glasses remained filled to the brim. The servers came by to check up on us. We didn't have to ask for to-go backs as they just brought one for each one of us. Overall, we are happy that we found another lunch option in the area. We will come back to try other items on their lunch menu!

I took my wife and mother here for Mother's Day. The service is great. The portion size is rather large so I would suggest splitting a dish if you're going during dinner. The taste of food is probably the second best Chinese restaurant I've ever had. And the price okay

House of Chan is a pretty good Chinese Dine-In spot located on Cobb Parkway. I am a fan of their General Tso Chicken & Kung Pao Chicken. Don't forget to order the Wonton Soup here....pretty good. The prices are a tad bit higher than your normal Chinese take out spot but the counter to that is the food is fresher. It can get packed for lunch and dinner time and isn't a bad alternative to the down of street P.F. Chang at a more less expensive rate. Overall: C+/B-

I visited this spot a couple of times as it was close to the crib. Chin Chin's on Howell Mill is my usual go-to chinese takeout resto. The 2 stars are for the food as the hot & sour soup and chicken wings are possibly the best that I've had. Also, the general tso's chicken was pretty good too. I also sampled the egg rolls and shrimp fried rice. They were both sub par to average. The other stars omitted are primarily for the rude service. The cashier especially was rude & insulting. That's why I never patronized them again. I guess I'll be going back to Chin Chin's on Howell Mill since their food is good & they know how to treat customers...

If you like Americanized Chinese, this place is pretty good. My co-workers love this place but I think it's b/c they haven't been introduced to "real" Chinese food :) It's always packed and the space does feel a little tight. Lunch specials are available Mon-Fri 11-3:30pm. Pricing is $8.95 for chicken dishes, $9.55 for beef, and $10.95-11.55 for shrimp. Soup and egg rolls are not included. BEEF STEAK HONG KONG STYLE - $9.55 Very flavorful sauce (tastes similar to A1) and big pieces of meat - maybe flank or hanger steak? Meat is on the chewy side but overall good dish. Also comes with broccoli and onions. I'd get this again. MONGOLIAN CHICKEN - $8.95 Like Mongolian Beef, this dish is on the sweet side and topped w/ green onions & white styrofoam noodles - very good the 1st time. But it was just ok the 2nd time - and the styrofoam noodles were MIA. TANGERINE SHRIMP - $11.55 Shrimp is lightly fried, sauce is slightly spicy/sweet, also green peppers, carrots and snow peas. I wasn't a fan of the other veggies but did like the snow peas b/c they were crunchy. Seems expensive for what you get -- but it's my co-worker's favorite dish and she orders this every single time. BASIL CHICKEN & SHRIMP SPECIAL - $11.55 Sampled one bite and thought it was pretty good. Also came w/ sauteed veggies. SPICY HUNAN SHRIMP - $10.95 Sampled one bite and it was just ok. Wasn't spicy at all and came w/ sauteed veggies. PEPPER BEEF - $9.55 Craving the Beef Steak Hong Kong Style but couldn't remember the name and got this by mistake. Just ok - beef was decent so were the snowpeas but the carrots tasted old and I'm not a fan of baby corn or button mushrooms. If you want beef you must get the Beef Steak Hong Kong Style. Overall 3 stars -- but probably 4 stars for Americanized Chinese food. Service is friendly. I recommend going early to avoid waiting for a table.

I rarely eat Chinese food. Rarely. I'm kind of more of a Korean food snob ha. But I will admit House of Chan was excellent. Came here for lunch with a buddy of mine. We ordered I think something called Kulu (?) and Sesame Chicken. Both yummmm. We had them both family style. More than enough for us. In fact, we took each plate home after we dug in. I would definitely come back. Services was great too. Parking is small but doable. ALSO: This place is kind of hidden, so make sure to keep an eye out!

This is THE BEST chinese food in cobb county! If you've never had really good chinese food, you may not know how good it can be, but House of Chan does a great job of making high quality Americanized chinese food. The downside is, the service and location isn't the best. They're very friendly, but you can't always get your waiter's attention if you need it. And the location is looking a bit more run down than it did back when the restaurant was winning Zagat awards. This place is still worth going to despite the drawbacks, the food is just that good!

This is the best Americanized Chinese food around. Their portions are big, the food comes out quick and their general tso's can rival just about anyone. If you want authentic Chinese food, keep heading north on 75 to Tasty China or head over to Buford Highway. If you like "Chinese food" this should be your spot.

YUM YUM! On Christmas night, while in San Francisco, my family and I ate Chinese food in China Town. Shocker, right? Shockingly, a meal my son and I had on MLK at House of Chan in little ole' Mayretta GA, FAR outranked that experience. When it comes to Chinese, I am extra, super- picky about sauce and meat quality, as well as freshness of vegetables. I was not disappointed with any at this bustling, VERY local eatery. Having recently had his wisdom teeth removed, my boy needed simple, healthy, nutrition. The egg-drop soup was salted perfecty for his predicament, the low-mein noodles soft but not mushy with tender beef and a delicate brown sauce. I asked for chicken with every vegetable (minus mushrooms) in a white sauce (why order off the menu?) and got a spa dish worthy of Sydel. The service bordered on over-the-top-efficient (almost invasive), but that is the worst thing I would say about our experience. To their credit-when my son ordered, the waiter asked if he also wanted his meal without mushrooms (good catch!). The atmosphere is homey (don't read kitsche), happy and dive-ish. House of Chan is an excpetional spot for a casual date, family reprieve or couples night out; The cost is moderate, food delicious and well located near Smyrna, East Snobb, Sminings and NW Buckhead. Since I moved here from New York, I have been looking for good Chinese food. This is the best that I have had since being here in Georgia. Very nice staff. The food is fresh and good. All of the dishes that I've had taste as good as I had back home.

It makes me sad to say that I cannot give this review five stars. This is not the House of Chan I remember from my childhood. Why must I always be cursed with bland food when I am about to start a clean eating regimen? Long story short, I told my mom I wanted REAL chinese food-not takeout, not panda express, not PF Changs. So I asked her to meet me here after work. She always likes spicy food so it did not surprise me when she ordered the General Tao's (Tso's) chicken even though she just said she was going to order Sweet and Sour Chicken (I think they call it Kulu chicken here). I ordered the Mandarin Chicken. We got a fried rice to share. I don't think I've ever had bland fried rice. My mom complained that her dish was not spicy enough--at first I thought she was overreacting like normal, but I tasted her food and it was more sweet than anything. My mandarin chicken was blah-oh wait, was that a red pepper flake? Oh wait, do I still taste flour?!?!? Sad sad day. The leftovers are still in my fridge because I can't fathom wasting food. Oh, my hot and sour soup was good though.

This place has not changed in 20 years. I used go there with my buddy after going to the shooting range. Love their chicken friend rice. They also have real good Sweet and sour soup. Spend $15 for both items, ate for a couple of days.

This is by far the best "American Style" Chinese food that I have had in the Atlanta area. The service is amazing. As soon as you are seated, a parade of servers deliver fresh, crunchy noodles, ice water as well as a pot of piping hot tea to your table. Over several visits, I've sampled the shrimp chow mein, moo goo gai pan and pork egg foo young. All very, very good. Large portions allow you to take some home for later use. The only thing that I would say is a negative is that for the price, it is more expensive than your typical Chinese restaurant, everything is ala carte. There are no combination options where soup, egg rolls and/or some form of ice cream or sherbet are usually included. Don't expect that here. If you're in the area, give it a shot!

I'm from up north so I know good Chinese food.. I got the shrimp lo mein and it's AMAZING!! shrimp are a great size. The noodles are moist !!! flavor is great. Only reason why I wouldn't give 5 starts because they are PRICEY!!!

We thought we found our Chinese place in the greater Atlanta area. We have settled with a different restaurant that is much further from home than House of Chan. Today, we went to Best Buy across the street. My husband says "Let's give it a shot." Yelp to the rescue, and I made my decision. All the good reviews ring true with House of Chan. It literally not like any other Chinese food I've ever had. We ordered house egg fu young, shrimp fried rice, crab ragoon, and egg rolls. Egg rolls are egg rolls, but the crab ragoon was easily the best. The sauce that was served with it was equally as delicious and sweet with a fruity undertone. The egg fu young was perfect and served with gravy on the side. The gravy itself I would of eaten with a spoon if I didn't have any respect for myself. It was more of an au jus, almost clear, and slightly sweet. The fried rice had full sized shrimp in it. Every single Chinese restaurant I have ever had uses those little tiny bite sized shrimp. I appreciate these shrimps more than they would probably ever know. What highlights the experience is the service. The staff is friendly, conversational, funny, and most of all accommodating. Never had to ask for a thing. I suppose if I had a complaint, the decor is very outdated, but truthfully I've never been to a Chinese restaurant that didn't have outdated decor. Think about it this way, if they have been around THAT long then there is something to it.

This was my first visit and i will be back. The food was good. The shrimp lo mein I ordered was a large serving but the shrimp were over cooked even though they were plentiful. The fried rice was cooked perfectly. Not all sticky and greasy like some I've had. The wonton soup was excellent. I will pass on the egg roll next time. It was bland. The pot of hot tea was a very nice touch and I really enjoyed it.

What I like most about house of chan is the flavors are in the meat vs in a thick exterior breading. Menu is consistent, there is always a special item not on the menu, and the wait staff if always willing to cutomize an entree. Service is quick and friendly without a compromize of quality. if i am near cobb parkway this is where I eat chinese period. The establish is kind of small, but that has only creating a challenge for being seated 1 or 2 times. What i dont like about House of Chan ... is we dont have one in Conyers, Ga

House of Chan is our "go to" place for high quality "New York Chinatown" style Chinese cuisine. While they do offer a few authentic Chinese favorites, the Peking Duck served in two courses is, by far, the best example. We regularly enjoy the Hot and Sour Soup, arguably the best in town. For the appetizer we almost always go with the spare ribs. These are marinated and then pan fried, which is something that is very difficult to find at Chinese restaurants in the south (but extremely common in the north). The taste is truly amazing and entirely superior to what passes as typical Chinese food in Atlanta. Another regular favorite is the pork fried rice, also prepared in a similar fashion to what is found up north. If looking for something less elaborate for your entree than Peking Duck, we suggest the Kulu Chicken-- an authentic style sweet and sour chicken completely unlike the usual pink citrus form found at Chinese restaurants all over the United States. The restaurant serves beer and wine, but hot tea is always served as soon as you sit down and is free. The restaurant is relatively small, but handles its patrons well and is very clean. The service is extremely professional and friendly, especially once they get to know you. I truly do not understand any of the reviews that complain about the service. We've checked in here in excess of 13 times and have never had a bad experience. To give you some idea of how thoroughly we endorse this place, we have several Chinese restaurants within a mile of our home and we travel 45 minutes to dine here nearly every week. Overall, this is the best Chinese restaurant of this kind in Atlanta! The next time you want extremely good Chinese food, make House of Chan your destination!

My work frequently goes here for Chinese. Each time the food has just been so so and very expensive for lunch. This last time a HUGE roach crawled across the wall! When I told management I didn't even get an I'm sorry. I will not go back.

This is one of the best restaurants in Atlanta. It is family owned and operated. The place is small but clean. Absolutely nothing that I have gotten has been bad. My favorite is orange beef, and cashew chicken. Once you come inside and are seated, you have a pot of hot tea in front of you with a glass of water and crunchy snacks. I do a lot of lunch networking meetings here and everyone loves it!!

The food was bland and soggy and when I tried to return it to try something else the manager practically yelled at me and told me "you don't try things". Went because of the good reviews, think they need some balance.

Terrible service. We waited for 20 minutes after being seated to order, but were not served and were rudely ignored by staff. I don't know why this place is rated at $; it is very expensive for a Chinese place. We left and will not be back.

I was craving egg drop soup, as was my husband. I stopped in and ordered some. I like that this restaurant doesn't have a buffet that people sneeze and cough in. I had my soup in less than 5 minutes. It was very good. I realize it's just soup, but the soup and the service I received have made me want to try this place again!

Food was average and pricy for Chinese food. We had garlic chicken, which had very little flavor. It was supposed to be spicy, but not even a hint of fire. Also, 3/4 vegetables to chicken ratio for this dish. Sesame chicken had loads of chicken and was pretty average. Rice was ok, but nothing to write about. Not going back ,as I think there are better options out there.

  • Bruce K.

Ditto what Annie W. said - fresh ingredients, big portion, friendly service and yes, I was skeptical but it was where my customer wanted to eat. We had to wait a few minutes as the lunch rush was under way. I had the Szechuan Beef, which was noted on the menu as spicy but it wasn't. Crispy green peppers and those mini corn thingies and a good amount of beef with a huge pile of fried rice. It was more than enough for a growing boy (growing out, not up) and I left some behind. And for $11 with tip, a solid deal for lunch. I'll be back.

Best Chinese food in Atlanta, IMHO. I've ordered numerous items off of their lunch menu and nothing was less than stellar. Very fresh flavors, complimentary hot tea when dining in and a fast take out service. Well-priced for the quality and friendly service every time.

  • ChauPha N.

I ordered the Mongolian chicken, hot and sour soup, and wonton soup for Togo. The lady that took my order was nice and it wasn't too busy in the restaurant. Service was really fast. I think I went in and ordered my food and got my food under 10 minutes and I didn't even call ahead. I don't know if they are super cook or what lol. The Mongolian chicken tasted like how it should be... The wonton soup was good but I feel like it was too bland and the hot and sour soup was as good as I thought it would be since alot of yelpers recommended it. But overall fast service and decent foods.

I found this place just driving around the area for work. It is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. I've experienced consistently good food and service. You can be in and out very quickly during lunch, so it's perfect for a quick daytime meeting between appointments or with a client or friend. Their lunch menu does not include soup, but it does include hot tea.

I had a terrible meal at house of Chan on Friday. I ordered moo goo gai pan to go and I was so disappointed it was tasteless and bland. To make it worse they were canned mushrooms and they weren't very many of them. Shame on you House of Chan.

If you are looking for great Chinese food, House of Chan is the place to go. I have been going to House of Chan for well over 20 years and always get great tasting food with wonderful service....I have always been pleased with everything I have ordered, but recently had the Tangerine Chicken, along with some steam dumplings....which were both very delicious.

We went on the recommendation of friends and so glad we did! We've had a hard time finding good Chinese food since we moved to Atlanta, and we're glad that we tried here! For a small place in a strip mall, it's really good. I had chicken with black bean sauce, which was fresh and delicious. The husband had egg fu young and felt the same way - and we had enough left over for us to have lunch for the next few days. The service was wonderful, very attentive. The tables, booths and menus were nice and clean, really a very good spot!

We decided to go here based on the yelp reviews and boy I'm glad we did. Let's start with the service: Amazing. I love a social and friendly waitstaff within seconds of sitting down we had water and hot tea. Not a minute later someone came by to see if we wanted anything else to drink. We were fine with the water and hot tea. Then about a minute later someone came by to see if we had any questions with the menu. We told him we had never been so he have us some suggestions and we took him up on them. Now let's get to the food. Deeeelish! We started with soups. I had hot and sour and the boyfriend had wonton. Both perfect. I had the Spicy Hunan chicken and my boyfriend had the kulu pork. (Not sure if I'm spelling that right). The chicken was great but that pork was killer! Soooo good. One suggestion is either come really hungry or get soups and then split an entree. The portions are huge!

I really like House of Chan. I've been here a few times with my family and have never had to wait on a table (maybe because we always eat dinner early). This place is a hidden gem. Its really small, tucked away, and you wouldn't notice it if you drove by. When you are seated you are given a small pot of hot tea, a glass of ice water, and a small bowl of crispy noodles (?). For Chinese food, this place does not give you that 'heavy' feeling after you've eaten which I love. My go-to is the general Tso's Chicken with white rice, and then a side order of the vegetable fried rice. The General Tso's Chicken is not breaded like other typical Chinese food places which I think is why it's so good. The restaurant is very clean and the employees are super friendly and attentive. My only issue is that its all a little pricey. The dinner prices are around $18-$20 per platter I think. The lunch specials are around $8-$10 per plate. House of Chan is a treat so I can't go here all that often.

Service was awesome! Food even better. It's a bit on the pricey side for what I'm used to paying for Chinese. But it was definitely good and they give you very large portions. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken and fried rice. I could easily get 2-3 meals out of it. The crab ragoon was also pretty delish. Giving it 4 stars for the price. My dish was $14.

I have gone frequently to HoC frequently for the past 6 years. I love the staff and the food. Their sesame chicken has a light and crisp breading that is the best I've ever had. I used to live 5 minutes away and could call them as I was getting in my car and they would have my order ready when I got there. The dragon horse dishes are also great, but to be honest it's all good. Best Chinese in Atlanta.

I finally found the best authentic Chinese in Smyrna. So happy to have found this place. The place is so clean and such a great ambiance. The servers are great especially David, he has patience in explaining the menu. I love this place and it's very affordable. We'll be back for more.

This place is very unassuming. Parking lot is always full during prime lunch and dinner times. Service is amazing. I get the chicken and eggplant dish and I'm never disappointed. The turnaround on each table is quick, but I don't feel rushed at all. Had a client meeting in the area and was excited to come here. The dish I like wasn't on the lunch menu but they made it for me anyway. Very cool of them! Everyone smiles - it's such a simple thing that makes such a huge difference! Be happy people - life's good.

Delicious meal and speedy preparation!! My General Tso chicken was spicy but not too spicy. The perfect kick!! And our chicken fried rice was good too! The people were really friendly when we went to pick up our meal and it was ready as soon as we got there!! I would definitely recommend this place!

Your best choice for Chinese in Smyrna. Most Chinese Restaurants are the same and provide similar food. Do they all get it from the same supplier? House of Chan offers similar fare to most Chinese Restaurants, but the food is a step above. Fresher and with a varied selection. If you want better you'll have to go to Buford Highway. I recommend anything with eggplant. I gave it a 4 for Chinese, but compared to other restaurants I'd give it a 3.

To me...its typical Chinese food. Salty chicken wings, good pork fried rice. Now coming from NY..we had Chinese food restaurants on every corner. This spot to me seems to be a tad bit on the expensive side. An order of Pork Fried Rice and an order of Chicken wings shouldn't be $20. Seems a bit steep for that type of food. Its close to my house so ill have to try them again...since my choices are minimal. Maybe ill dine-in next time and see what happens.

I live in SoCal and am visiting in the area on a business trip and looked up this place to check it out. The food and experience was mediocre at best. Prices were insane for dinner and the quality was average. Nothing great or grand. Just okay...

I'm leaving only three stars because the dish I ordered was only 3 stars. I was really in the mood for a duck dish with mushrooms and green onions. The problem was the duck had all the bones and cartilage and stuff in it and it was a real pain to eat. The flavor was okay but it was way too greasy.

I visited this establishment about a week ago. I was pleased with the fast, friendly service. I placed a to-go order and within just a couple minutes I had my order in hand. I barely had enough time to read all of their numerous Zagat awards before I paid. I ordered the General Tso's chicken, hot and sour soup, and some egg rolls. When I got home my food was still too hot to even try to eat it! I loved the soup and the egg rolls, but the chicken left me wanting. It was very light in color and had hardly any spice to it. From what I could tell, the environment was decent, but very loud and they had newspaper clippings absolutely everywhere showing off how many times they've been awarded with something. It was not very big, and what I presumed to be the owners kids kept coming in and out of the store, which I found irritating. All in all, customer service was awesome, but the environment and food left a little to be desired. Also, the price was a little too high for the amount of food I received.

Had to try House of Chan after all the previous reviews. I'm totally a fan of Chinese food - hardcore. Between the 4 star score, one $ cost and location, I was intrigued! ...but the rumors are true: Good Chinese food, great service. Place was hoppin' at 11:30. They sat me immediately and three different people tended to me within the first 2 minutes of sitting down. The place was nothing special; looked like a diner-setting. Not as old as I expected after reading other reviews, but clean and presentable! They brought me crunchy things, free tea and water right away. I was hoping for the $6.99 lunch special that Daniel B mentioned a couple years ago - but that was not to be found. The prices were $7.95 and $8.95 for chicken and beef respectively. I ordered egg drop soup and chicken and broccoli. I don't need to say this in a fancy way: The food was just really appetizing and satisfying. I felt a little rushed to finish up as House of Chan was obviously getting a bit busier for lunch; they asked if I needed anything else while I was taking a call, and they brought me my check. No worries, they did keep my tea and water filled the whole time. I would go back, but I would probably get my meal to-go. It'd be a little cheaper and I'd probably have leftovers instead of sitting there inhaling all my food. Worth it!

Overpriced food! The shrimp fried rice was awful! Very bland and even soggy. The steamed white rice was nasty and not fresh. The Kung Pao shrimp was more sweet than hot. The hot and sour soup had nasty meat pieces in it which I was too afraid to ask what it was. The chicken wings were the only good food I had. Very outdated - plates and cups looked very old. If the food had tasted better, I would not have cared about price but was not satisfied at all! Only had three people and they automatically charged a 15% service charge! I must have missed that in the menu. Will not come back.

If you're looking for "real" Chinese food, shame on you for not going straight to Buford Hwy. For Americanized Chinese, this is alright. Good, and consistent, but not special. Ambiance: basic, a little dingy, fake-plants, slightly peely wallpaper... you know the drill. I've eaten in one time, and had take-out twice, and the service was ultra-speedy and mega-friendly every time. There's absolutely something to be said for excellent service. Food: ... good. For what it is. I feel like it's a bit overpriced, all things considered (especially when you have Lee's Golden Buddha across the street), but their menu is a bit larger than most, and they have a couple more creative dishes on there than other places. If you're tired of the same old battered-chicken-in-some-orangey-sauce, definitely give the Dragon Horse Beef a try. The wonton soup broth is awful, don't waste your time. Overall: a little more expensive than it probably should be, but if you're in the area and hungry, it sure beats KFC.

Nice enough people and quite decent for a Chinese place inside, but it all tasted the same, ex: Hunan Shrimp = Kung Po (their spelling) Shrimp. Listening to them take an order in our ear while we tried to eat and ignore the 'shouting back' was insufferable. WAY overpriced. King Spring Chinese is fresher, better, and guess what - you get soup and an egg roll with your lunch! Forget this place.

Grossed out! The waiter was clearly sick, had a runny nose, and was constantly sniffing. Yet he had no problem serving us food. I was so grossed out, I didn't eat the food. Just paid and walked out. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!

After rave reviews from a couple of my husband's Asian co-workers, we tried it this past Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised by how fast we were served and all of the appetizers/fixins (tea, wontons, etc.). I have NO complaints about the food. We tried some new dishes (so I can't remember their names) but they were scrumptious. The waiter was very friendly, too! I don't usually find friendly and talkative Asian waiters but he was very hospitable (usually they are "polite" and tolerant but not very talkative). The dishes were a bit pricey, however. Nothing under $14.95 for dinner but we will go back again. I would have rated 5 stars if it wasn't for the prices. Overall, great!

First let me say that owning a successful restaurant over a long term can be a very challenging and stress filled proposition. Keeping food costs, quality ingredients, a happy staff and wages in line is quite a balancing act. House of Chan had accomplished that for decades, but now recently has veered towards mediocrity. The Zagat postings on the walls have aged as well as current management. Food that used to be an absolute pleasure now rates a C+. The quality of ingredients has steadily gone downhill while prices have steadily spiraled upwards. Much of what is served is now food court quality. There is still that dish or two worth the trip, but far too many items on the menu are unworthy of the slightest consideration. The manager is obviously trying to stretch the shelf life of what he serves to avoid losing money on his purchases. This results in food being served that appears a step away from being discarded. Keep in mind you're paying top dollar for this travesty. The House of Chan of today is but a figment of what it used to be.

Ignore the negative reviews. Especially the ones claiming this restaurant does not serve "authentic" Chinese food. I've been to China many times. MOST OF YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO EAT AUTHENTIC CHINESE FOOD. Trust me. Do you want quality ingredients? Do you want a friendly and attentive staff? Do you want a variety of tastes/flavors and not have all the dishes drowned in the same brown sauce? Then go try the House of Chan. I've dined in the best restaurants in Chinatown in NYC for more than 30 years and House of Chan's food can compete with nearly all of them. Yes, it's a small place. And just why is that a negative to some Yelpers? And, yes, it's overdue for a re-modeling. But so what? It's a nice place. The variety of outstanding dishes is overwhelming: shrimp, seafood, beef, chicken, duck (including Peking Duck, which requires advance ordering), pork, vegetarian. There are 32 lunch specials, plus 3 "gourmet" lunch items. For dinner, they offer more than 80 entrees and for those who care, their chicken dishes are made exclusively with white meat chicken, while their beef dishes are made with "steak" meat. We had dinner there last night. Egg roll, egg drop soup, hot & sour soup, kung po chicken, chicken & broccoli, steamed rice, and fried rice. The chicken dishes each had their own flavor and coloring. And the steamed rice was fresh with just the right amount of stickiness. I will say that it appeared that the chicken & broccoli had more chicken than the kung po plate. But this might have been an illusion as the kung po chicken had larger pieces of chicken. As a transplanted New Yorker, I have no idea what a few Yelpers meant when they said this place wouldn't make it on Buford Highway or something like that. Let me tell you - House of Chan's menu items, food quality, and friendly staff would all do very well in NYC's Chinatown. And people would happily wait on line for a table.

I don't understand the rave reviews of this place. It even won a bunch of awards. I went for lunch. The place is tiny. It would be hard to bring a large group here. They had the standard lunch combos that you see at all the Chinese restaurants. So I ordered one. I even tried other people's dishes. They tasted like your standard Chinese food lunch combo that you can get at all the Chinese restaurants. Nothing special. It's not horrible, but it wasn't amazing either. Maybe I should come for dinner and try to discover how amazing this place is. But that lunch was pretty forgettable.

I don't know..maybe its me but when I think of Chinese food I think lower prices and plenty of rice. This place is priced high and the rice was just all right. Went there close to closing to get a to go order so I excused the fact that she was counting out the till. I ordered something quick and easy because I just wasn't sure what I wanted and the prices were shocking me. Shrimp fried rice. $12 bucks later I had a pint of rice and shrimp. It was okay, nothing to write home about or enough to make me come back.

When I say I've been eating here my whole life, I'm not exaggerating - my mom ate here when she was pregnant with me 24 years ago! To me this is the best chinese in the metro area. I live in Midtown and I drive out of the city just to eat here on a regular basis. Their soup is wonderful, especially the hot and sour, and my favorites include Dragon Horse Chicken, Cashew Chicken, and Tangerine chicken. I've heard good things about the more traditional dishes but I've never tried them myself. This place has great food and a really friendly atmosphere, I don't go anywhere else if I can help it.

What a treat. As a first time visitor, walking in and seeing the party in front of me e greeted by name was reassuring. The walls were ladened with articles upon articles from years past exalting their food. Yes, it is standard American Chinese fare, but it's absolutely on point. I ordered the tangerine chicken with fried rice for a quick lunch before a meeting with a client. I was not disappointed. Free hot tea, as well. I was only going to give them 4 stats because I thought the price was slightly higher than I though it should of been, but I had left a very important fountain pen at my table from working on notes. The man tending the desk ran out after me to give me the pen. Earned it. These folks are genuinely nice. They care about their customers, their food is good, and there is no need to go anywhere else in north west Atlanta for an above par Americanized Chinese lunch for a fair price.

From all the great reviews I've read on Yelp, I was expecting the best chinese food I've ever had. Don't get me wrong it was good, maybe really good. But it wasn't outstanding. I had the General Tso's Chicken and Hot & Soup soup. Both were really good. The place was packed at lunch and the prices were ok, maybe a little on the high side, but I'll go back.

Very good local place for me. My favorites are Moo Shu pork, Mongolian beef, and if they have it on special Mango Chicken. Very nice people own it and work there.

Fresh ingredients, big portions, and friendly service. I was definitely skeptical when we pulled up to a building that said House of Chan, but that's where my boss wanted to eat, so that's where we ate. I got the Spicy Hunan Jumbo Shrimp lunch special and it came with a pile of Egg Fried Rice and the shrimp/vegetable mixture. The shrimp were GIGANTIC and the veggies were fresh and cooked well. Not nearly spicy enough for my tastes (but my taste buds can withstand a lot), however, still full of flavor. The egg drop soup had a tad too much corn starch for my liking, but still tasty. Space is kind of tight, decor is dated, and the location is behind the Olive Garden, so look out. Overall, pretty good for really Americanized Chinese food.

Great service and even better food! The waiters are super friendly, you'll never have to ask for a refill because they're on it! Never had a bad experience, I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Hands down the best Chinese I've had in my 11 years as a citizen of Atlanta. The service is warm, friendly and attentive (my water or tea glass never gets to half full), and the food is always so fresh. I normally order the Beef Fried Rice add chicken or the lo-mein(same way), but minus sprouts and bamboo shoots. The chef and wait staff never gripe about my modifications, but instead serve me with some of the most delectable food, cooked to my wishes. Did I mention the egg rolls are the living end? LOL Without hesitation, I'd pick House of Chan over P.F. Chang's, Great Wall, and Chin Chin (all nearby). It's the total package- excellent food, amazing customer service and great prices.

My favorite chinese restaurant in the area. I really like their wonton soup and most everything is good. The only dish I've tried that I didn't love was the black pepper chicken. It was too peppery(i know it's in the name) Just tasted like i was eating pure pepper.

  • John N.

Giving this place 5 stars, as to the quick service, friendly wait staff and quality of the product. I ordered the spicy garlic beef and the wonton soup, total came to about $13 after tip. By far one of my favorites in the area. Although a little more expensive, definitely worth it. The place may seem small, but this place is always BUSY! Due to the great service and food, I don't see why it wouldn't be.

  • Phil P.

Way over priced for bland food. If you are in the mood for Chinese and really have no other option I guess go here, if not save your money. The place inside is old and dated and they live off of their reputation off of awards in the 1990's!! Really?! I am from New Jersey and they are pulling a fast one on you southerners!! WAY too expensive for crappy Chinese food! Like I said way over priced and not that good at all. Thumbs way way down. Never again.

Very respectable but very standard Chinese-American fare. Suitable for the suburbs. Would be terribly out of place on Buford Hwy. Very attentive service. Pretty nice for a strip mall location.

From the previous reviews, I was expecting to be BLOWN AWAY by the food.....completely opposite experience for me. I went today during lunch, and while it was very busy, the service was great. The food, on the other hand, WAS NOT. I got something very simple (sweet and sour chicken, egg fried rice, crab ragoon)...it was worse than the "chinese food" in the malls! The sauce for the chicken seemed to be old, and dark in color. The egg fried rice had no taste, and the crab ragoon was fried too hard.....I won't be returning.

I used to love Chinese food until all of the good sit-down Chinese resturants started closing, getting replaced by all of the take-out Chinese food places. Granted their sufficient in a pinch, but they ruined my enjoyment of Chinese food...until hubby took my to House of Chan! We visited last night and every single aspect of our meal and service were amazing. Our service was stellar; we never had to ask for a thing. And when our son spilled his Sprite, they were immediately there to wipe the table and replace his drink. They had no complaints or hint of annoyance at all. We had the two person meal that included choice of soup, eggroll, chicken wing, Kulu Chicken (their house style sweet and sour) and Mongolian Beef. Seriously, the eggroll was just beyond good. I couldn't even talk while I woofed it down. I appreciated the Kulu chicken having minimal breading; I hate that overly battered fake chicken used at the aforementioned take out places. The Kulu sweet and sour sauce was addictive, and it included tender crisp pieces of onion, green pepper and pineapple. And the Monglian Beef - wow! The people in Mongolia are jealous of this stuff!!! It was the BEST Mongolian dish I have ever had! I am actually craving my leftovers right now. Can't wait to get back!

We go here fairly often and the owner and staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I'm judging this restaurant for what it is, and that's Americanized Chinese food. There was one time we had lunch where the portion of chicken was very small compared to the vegetables. (Sorry can't remember the dish) But for the most part, especially dinner, the portions are fairly big. Everything we've had has been delicious and their hot and sour soup is even better, I love the stuff, its extra "pepper-y". The decor might be dated (I just mentioned to my husband that I felt like it was 1989 and I was a kid again), but the place is impeccably clean! Their water is also filtered, not straight from the faucet stuff; it was one of the things I noticed when we first ate there. Might not be a big deal to you, but to me it is.

overpriced and bland...fried rice (for lack of a better word) was disgusting...had the sesame chicken and meh (the sesame seeds were raw) and Kung pao chicken was horrible and crab Rangoon wasn't good and veggies in food were raw and cold

Typical Chinese American Cuisine... FOOD Pretty much everyone else has said it, if you're looking for authentic Chinese fare, this isn't the place, but if you're in a pinch and you just want something different, and close by, House of Chan is good. COST I ordered take out, (Tangerine Crispy Beef, and Fried Rice). I found it a bit pricey, where others give you a egg roll, and soup in addition for less. I'm really not that familiar with the area yet, as I moved here from Dallas, TX...it seems eating out is more expensive here, for less quality. SERVICE The cashier was very friendly and well informed and it showed in his descriptions, and he didn't seemed to be bothered by my questions. When I asked for Orange Beef, he informed me that they call it Tagerine Beef (I guess because they don't use the orange, though it didn't taste like orange beef, which is fine because it's not orange beef, its tagerine beef) and that it's slightly crispy with steamed veggies, which I loved. He told me it would take 7min, and joked with me when I came 1 hr later to pick up, saying he told me 7min, not 70min, funny :-) OVERALL I'm happy and will definitely return. The food was good Chinese American food, the service was great, the staff friendly and helpful, they seem to actually care about making money (good customer service), and though it's not authentic, I will likely come here often, unless I have time to drive to Buford HWY. All in all, this is their style, and they're doing it great! I can't give them five though, it's just not as good as it gets. Frankly, I doubt as good as it gets, is in Georgia? Maybe this is as good as it get's, maybe I should give them 5 and say, it's good as it gets in Georgia? I don't know...no no no no, I have to be honest.

Stopped by after finding this place on Yelp for a late lunch. Most of the rest of the reviews describe it pretty accurately. It's small, but I went when it wasn't terribly busy so there wasn't any weight. The Service was quick and good. I had the Chicken with Cashews. The portions were a good size and the food was tasty. They have good crispy noodles to munch on while you wait for you food, and hot tea comes standard. I will definitely be making this my default Chinese Food place when I'm at work.

This is a good place to come for their $6.99 lunch specials. Typical American-Chinese fare and there are plenty of items to choose from. The food is decent. The restaurant itself is small and the tables are very close together, so you you might feel cramped unless you're sitting in one of the booths along the walls. This place gets very busy during lunch time and if you don't show up before noon (on a weekday), there is a good chance you'll have to wait for a table. Service is good.

I have been a regular at this place for more than a year and coming here is always a good experience. The staff is always friendly and quickly picked up on my favorite orders. The food is tasty and plenty so you should still have something left for later as well. I have tried most of their meat dishes and they are consistently good. Their hot and sour soup is always worth getting as well. Just be aware: if you are looking for serious, authentic Chinese food, you probably won't find it here. However, this shouldn't hold you back from giving it a try...

Tad over rated - this should not be number one - not bad, but not the best hole in the wall Chinese place either. I went there an ordered the garlic hot chicken. PROS: - Food quality - Food portions - Clean (for a small place) - Got seated quickly - Good service CONS: - Small place - Food is rather bland (I order extremely hot and it wasn't hot at all) - Fried rice is not "to die for" and does not contain much egg - Food is 8 bucks a dish for lunch This place should not be "one dollar" expensive. The dishes are 8 to 10 bucks and with drinks and all is about 15 pp which I would consider normal. Not a bad place, but not a place I would take someone from out of town.

  • John G.

I eat here on a regular basis because the food is always fresh the chef knows how to cook and will alter the flavor if you want it a bit spicy and the owner always is very friendly. Nothing crazy or gourmet here just good solid American - Chinese.

This is a pretty good Chinese location to visit. The prices are pretty good but I wish that you got soup with your meal is my only problem. You get a TON of food for the price and you will, for the most part, get two meals out of one. I liked the place and will def revisit it sometime soon.

If there's one thing that I envy about my friends who live up in Smyrna, it's proximity to the House of Chan. Chinese food and Chinese restaurants tend to be samey to me, but this place and their delicious food stand out. It's not a cold, stale buffet--every dish comes out fresh and feels homemade (I didn't know they actually made their own sauces and noodles, that's great!) And yes, the service is warm and inviting in a way that can't be learned from a training manual. Totally worth crossing town for.

Small place, good food and great service. I got there a bit after noon and we had a 10 minute wait to get in, it was really crowded. I ordered the Hanan Tofu and veggie spring rolls as I am a vegetarian. Everything I got was excellent. I asked for the Hanan Tofu "Spicy" and was told it was already medium spicy so I asked for a little more than that. It came out just right. Despite the crowd, my water was always refilled before it was empty and the wait staff checked on us regularly. Have one more day here, will go back again tomorrow and get there a little earlier.

I read some reviews on this place online and decided to check it out for lunch one day. Yum! For $6.99 I received hot tea and fried noodles at the table along with a large portion of egg fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. The chicken was so tender and fresh. The rice seemed a little plain at first, but complemented the sauce of the chicken very well when eaten together. I have tried the hot and sour and egg drop soup and didn't care for them. They both had a little bit of heat and spice added to them that I found to be overwhelming. House of Chan makes all their own sauces and noodles. The food was so fresh and flavorful. House of Chan has also mastered customer service like no other Asian establishment I've patroned. The service was great. I can't wait to return.

This is a great place for lunch if you work in the Smyrna area. Servers are super polite and remember you. The food is always very fresh and served quickly. It looks like your average hole in the wall Chinese food place from the road, but the quality is much higher--no mushy broccoli.

had dinner here with a girlfriend and i was a little shaky about going because i had never heard of this place and it was outside of my comfort zone...anywho.. had a love dinner here. the sesame chicken was really good! the staff was extra sweet...will definitely go back if i'm in smyrna...ever...again... :-)

I went here for the first time to see what all the fuss is about and was not impressed. I got the sweet and sour chicken lunch special. The rice is plain with no onions or veggies but they give you a decent portion. The portion of chicken was very small and thinly cut. So the meal is mostly rice and veggies with a little portion of chicken :( If you want quality chinese food with a decent size portion of meat Golden Buddha in Buckhead is def top notch quality chinese!

Excellent Chinese food, and fantastic service! This is our go-to place when we're not sure what to have, or where to go for food. I've tried many of the items on their menu, and have yet to be disappointed~ No reason to bother with any of the other cheap, blah Chinese places nearby, House of Chan definitely has the best Chinese cuisine for the price... My favorite on the menu is the dragon-horse beef~

The official name is "House of Chan". This place is amazing, especially for it's 6.99 lunches. The service is some of the best in Atlanta. The food is always consistent and I pickup takeout at least once a month.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
