Ok if you like the taste of styrofoam plates and plastic utensils, and the convenience of being right off the Interstate (exit 94, a concentration of hotels and restaurants in outer Savannah). But, do yourself a favor and go 4 miles out of your way for the real thing at Love's Seafood on US 17 at the Ogeechee River. Mostly locals, too. Read my review of Love's.

The wife and I walked out before ordering. Smelling previous guests' cast-off seafood + no good non-fried options + high prices = walking out without ordering. For those of you who like(d) this restaurant, cheers to you, but no thanks from us!

I was in Savannah for the first time on business, the fellows at the plant took me out to lunch for seafood. They drove me down to the Shell and were greatly disappointed that it wasn't open for lunch. We found another place which was also good. My hotel was right accross the highway so went there for dinner that evening. It wasn't cheap but the service was fast and good portions especially the shrimp. I was told to always ask for Georgia shrimp, the bartender said thats all they served. Nothing pretentious about it, if you are afraid to eat with your hands, don't go.

Service was fast and great, the food portions were plentiful and good. My wife enjoyed her meal and she too was satisfied. We will be coming back again

I had the shrimp appetizer, and it was pretty good. The only downside was the fact that it was $14 for 15 or so- medium sized shrimp. The up charge was unacceptable, even though they were cooked well. I ordered some coffee and it was served in a 6oz paper cup. wtf?! I expected a lot more for such a hefty bill.

People always loved the Shellhouse. The atmosphere is nice. They have the nice deck over looking the water. When I return home, people always want to meet me at the Shellhouse for dinner. I was never a fan of it. There is a trash can in the middle of the table and it just kind of grosses me out. I get it though. Crack your shells and throw it in the hole. Most of the time the trash can was never emptied from previous customers so it stinks. You can't enjoy your meal after being grossed out with the trash can in the middle.

Food was very good if you are traveling by. The scenery is nice and allows the kids to stretch their legs. They fed the turtles off the water deck and watched the alligator swimming in the pond. The popcorn shrimp and the broiled shrimp were delicious. I recommend trying it out. Only negative was the time to get food was a bit lengthy.

4.5 stars! This is a little hidden diamond. Although the bathroom is tiny, the food and service were on point! The all you can eat crabs were fresh and sweet. The corn and potatoes were a little over cooked but I hardly noticed with the constant flow of snow crabs. The alligator tail was tender and full of flavor. Even the catfish and kids meal fish dinner was worth the trip.

Very cute place and prices are ok. I ordered snow crab with oysters with a side of sausage and corn not bad for $27 but the oysters were full of sand it was horrible, they barely cleaned them, I guess u get what you pay for. Some oysters had baby shells hanging off of them,I get it its fresh but really... Not a fan

  • Christine C.

I really like this place. Food is okay..but only because the seasoning used is extremely salty. Service is good although last night it was slightly slower than the other times I have been there. The shrimp are not cleaned but I don't mind ..keeps me at a good pace cleaning them real quick. Not a big deal. I like the garbage in the middle of the table also.

Overpriced food that all tasted like it was out of a frozen food. The food itself was not bad, but it definitely wasn't fresh seafood. We got gator tail for an appetizer, I got fried shrimp and my mom got fried catfish. All of tasted the exact same, like something you'd get from the frozen food section at walmart. My husband got a boiled platter but wasn't impressed with it and said it bad, just very bland. For the price this place definitely isn't worth it. There are far better places in this area to go.

A very nice ambiance, nice wait staff. The menu is kinda pricey. The food was very good and the portion size was perfect. I had the catfish and shrimp. My wife had the low country boil. Everything was great.

  • Kurt L.

We went here about a year ago and had the snow country boil. It was so good we raved for the next year to our family and friend about it. We went back last week and it was as good as I remembered it. So tasty we bought their home spices before we left this town to try to recreate at home. If in Savannah and you like a real low country boil then go to Shellhouse!

Eh...not bad for a highway dinner stop. Don't expect the savannah meal of your life tho. Solid 3 star place to eat and better than fast food.

Great place to eat some sea food!! Been to the crab shack on Tybee Island and it's comparable.

Food was fried. No grilled fish. Plastic and paper accessories. Not cool! Shrimps over breaded and fries soaking in grease.

When I first tried the Shell House they were in Statesboro. It wasn't quite as good. That was over 4yrs. ago. Since then I've been back again this time off of Interstate 95 took my wife for Mother's Day and the food wad exceptional! I just loved the fried shrimp platter and they were fried and seasoned very well. We will definitely be going back!

Sunday... That is all... All you can eat crab legs 4-6 Sunday is the only reason to go. They are excellent! And I am very picky with crab legs... I went to a bday party w some friends, they ordered oysters, fried shrimp, crawfish, etc. I will say the shrimp was realllly good.. The oysters were HORRIBLE the crawfish as well do NOT Order those! NOT worth the money. Really they are pretty over priced on everything, pretty much the only thing you can get you money's worth on is the all you can eat crab legs (they're reg. 18 or 22$ a pound?)

  • Matthew A.

I love this place. In the past, I've had hit or miss service. But today, Miranda, was spot on excellent. She was polite, quick, attentive, pleasant, and readily solved our issue when our crab came out cold. Go Miranda! The crab is good, and the oysters (fried) were great. I look forward to my return.

"A good, not great restaurant, decent food, a bit over priced" Recommended. The Savannah area is loaded with seafood restaurants. This one on the outskirts of Savannah is at exit 94 off I-95. If you see the Harley Davidson dealership sign, you'll note this place is right next door. When you walk in, you'll note the layout features tables with holes in the center. Below them are garbage cans. The notion is, as you eat shellfish, you discard the empty shells, paper towels, and paper plates. Yes, that's right --- servings revolve around paper plates and towels. It's a bit blue color, but practical, and it works. The menu offers many selections. I've enjoyed their combo dinners. They're pretty good. See these offerings here: shellhouseseafoodsavanna… This place is a bit pricey. Prices for these combo dinners are different depending on what you order. My combo's typically cost around $28. This is a bit high but typical of restaurants in the Savannah area. It's quite common for restaurateurs in the area to charge "New York prices" for entrees not up to New York quality standards.

  • Patricia F.

The food was not terrible. I thought it was overpriced for what they offered and especially considering they use disposable plastic utensils, cups and plates. Boarder line upscale Long John Silvers. We came to Savannah after spending 4 days in Charleston and so far the food is Savannah has been disappointing. Maybe is just seems so bad because Charleston ' s food was just about the best I have ever eaten.

This was a stop off from the interstate great location for sit and go. I could tell the boiled shrimp was cooked perfectly very tender not overdone great seasoning. Also the catch of the day was the mahi mahi and the chef cook that to perfection wonderful taste! Stop on by.

I knew we were at a great restaurant when I walked up and saw a hole right in the middle of the table for your shells. Excellent seafood restaurant. Had the domination snow crab and oils shrimp.

Meh. Really bad. Food lukewarm or overcooked- " novelty " trash can in center of every table is actually a disgusting idea. Plastic cups and utensils....Dirty dining area and tables, terrible pre prepared food with the bonus of an overpriced bill as a final slap in the face !! Could I have actually been better off at Hooters next door ? Get back on I 95 and go as far away as possible......

Found this place on a trip to savannah this weekend, the food was excellent. We had the low country boil, highly recommended. Seasoned and prepared, just right. Decent portion sizes and fresh shrimp. Menu was simple and to the point, with choices for every one to pick from.

  • Amber M.

Extremely over priced and the food was not good. I ordered the crab legs which were luke warm in spots and cold in others, I also got raw oysters which had clearly been shucked early in the day and left to sit in the fridge. When I got them they were drying out and had a very fishy smell. Hardly anything on the menu was under $20. The crab legs and shrimp were seasoned with old bay which I could have done at my own house and not WASTED my $70.

Ok the atmosphere isn't the best. Gravel parking and limited spaces. Wow the menu is very lop-sided with overly priced items which makes it not to kid or teenager friendly. The hole in the middle of the table isn't appealing at all and the food is honestly just ok. I can get this same food in Macon ga far away from any coast lines so I would expect better. I will say that they do have some good crawfish though but that was because I snatched it off someone's plate. So if u like or love crawfish...come on. But if ur more of a sampler type bring both wallets and your credit score cause u might need to finance your meal. To much for the portions. I finished and was still hungry. Wow

A person recommended we try this place and OMG, what a good meal. We were 5 and everybody ordered something different. We started with the gator tail. One order was enough for all. I had the country boil. One pound of shrimp that was delish. Sausage, potato, and corn. Wow, that was a lot of food. Next person had the pound of crab legs. Delish. Next order was Fried shrimp. Very good. Let's just say, not a bad meal in the bunch. Service was great. This is a must do when in the area. Recommend.

Skip this place and save your money. You're better off heading to IHOP near by. IHop would be like gourmet food in comparison.

Appropritely named restaurant, prices tend to the upper side. I stopped here for dinner while travelling. It was 8-ish, and I was able to be seated right away. The server kept my iced tea filled, and the food came out quickly, but the "snow country boil" I ordered obviously wasn't all cooked together. The potatoes had NO hint of seasoning, and the corn was over-cooked. The crab and shrimp were tasty, if a bit under-seasoned for my taste. I guess they shoot for the lowest common denominator, not wanting to offend anyone with sensitive taste buds. I did have containers of melted butter, and what I thought might be Old Bay, but later decided was just seasoned salt, to enhance the meal. I had to ask for lemons, the 3 or 4 small hushpuppies were unremarkable. Finding the parking lot in the dark was an adventure, and the paved portion is too small for the size of the restaurant. there is unpaved / gravel parking available. Overall, it was a seafood meal, not horrible, not great.

  • Michelle T.

The food tastes good but if you come with a group you need to be prepared to wait over TWO HOURS to eat. I am sitting here as I type. The servers are great, very nice, and clearly overwhelmed but it's so slow between ordering and getting food. Many orders have been forgotten. If you come with kids, bring a sandwich, because they will be hungry before the food comes. Why am I paying full price for this again?

A casual place for seafood. Quite ingenious to have a hole in the middle of the table with a garbage bag to toss your shells in. The crab legs and shrimp are very good. Not overly seasoned, cooked to perfection. Hush puppies are standard. The iced tea as usual tasted weak. I like my ice on the strong side. As for the catfish I didn't care for it . It tasted like a standard white fish fried instead of the distinct flavor of catfish. I didn't know they served alcohol until we were leaving since it wasn't on the menu. That was a bummer. I wanted a Long Island Iced tea. Looking forward to the next time and getting a Big Person's Drink.

Food was good. Mostly friend seafood. I tried the crab stew and really enjoyed it. THe servers need to be better trained. When I asked server about the food she had no idea. Would come back.

Stopped by here for a quick dinner while traveling back home! OUTSTANDING FOOD & SERVICE!!! We had the fried shrimp and crab cake combo. The shrimp were hot, crispy and fresh with just the right batter to still tell that the shrimp were fresh. The crab cakes were equally well done. They know how to cook it perfectly on the inside without drying out the outside. We also had the gumbo. Best around! Sides were great, too. Red rice (kind of a tomatoey dirty rice with little bits of the sausage mixed in), sausage links and grits all very well done. We will definitely be back!

What a great dinning place...the service was great and so was the food...the hole in the middle of the table is for your shells (in my case shrimp casings), bottles, and anything else you want to discard...the hole was no bother...the bathrooms were super clean....me and the wife had the Shrimp Kabobs (18 to 21 shrimps) over rice and two sides (I had corn and mini hush puppies)....I had two beers and my wife had one and we shared a Slap Your Mama Cake.... Everything tasted great... The parking lot is gravel but so what???....did bother my tires so it it didn't bother me....for both meals I paid $51.87....they did charge me $6 for the cake when it was listed at $5, but I let it go....very, very attentive to your needs...the parking lot was packed but we did not have to wait.... Tables could use a little mor cleaning.....we will return...

Being a frequent visitor of Savannah, we wanted to eat at a local seafood. We tried Shell House due to it's reviews. What a mistake! I ordered shrimp & crab cakes (with potatoes & corn) and my mother ordered catfish & crab cakes (with red beans/rice & sausage). The shrimp was overcooked, very chewy, and did not have any seasoning to it. The red potatoes was dry like all they did was boil it with water. I was very much looking forward to the crab cakes (tasteless). The red beans and rice was spanish rice and was mushy. Most of the food was left uneaten. I rated 2 stars based on service, tea, and the key lime pie. I don't see how this place received such high reviews compared to other seafood restaurants in Savannah.

  • T A.

Mahi and crab cakes were very good, side dishes - cole slaw and potato salad not , preset probably at the beginning of night in paper plates, not fresh. Rice from the box, soggy and cold, corn overcooked. Paper plates and cups, plastic forks and a big garbage pail were too cheesy for the price. Service - average - they brought the food out. Bathrooms clean. You should go there for seafood only, at half price . Check it out for yourself and see if you'll go back, We won't .

Place was packed on a Saturday Night. I got the oyster plate. I have had a hard time getting good tasty fried oysters in Savannah that werent covered in about 1/2" of thick batter that sucked. This place knows how to cook oysters. They were still soft, fantastic flavor, a bit on the small size but they gave me plenty. The fries were from a bag...not great. The slaw was homemade and very good. Tarter was homemade as well and very good as well. Very casual atmosphere with a nice big pond out back to look at while eating. Beer selection in the bar was pretty sparce if you like good microbrews. They had the general bud, miller, yingaling or whatever you call it. I would go back. I saw a guy eating the Snowcrab and oyster platter and DAMN was it big! Looked fantastic....I think it is about $30 bucks...the Oysters were about $20. The place is definitly not cheap but hey....you get what you pay for...just ask my ex wife.

Closer to 3 Star.. The Shell House is a OK seafood place with a great location. It is a huge place with extra room for gatherings . I had what they call their Low Country boil but, it had snow crab legs they, cleverly call it Snow Country Boil. The service was good but, it was not very busy with the size of the place I hope they pack them in at a different hour. Savannah is known for its seafood, just not sure if this place has the quality as Love's does about 5 miles down the road. In speaking with locals they feel as I do on every table in the middle is a hole where you put your shells with a trash can under the table ??? Kind of nasty to me ?? What about flies ? Much better seafood in Savannah.

We've had a lot of hit and miss places trying to find some good seafood in the area, so we decide to give The Shellhouse a try. So happy we did!! I had the snow crab legs and scallops with fries and corn on the cob and it was absolutely delicious (though I didn't eat any fries, since I was enjoying my crab and scallops too much). Seafood was flavorful, juicy, and seasoned perfectly. My husband had the steak and shrimp and he was very happy with it. Many seafood places have steaks that is just ok, but his was one of the best he's had in a while. Cooked just like he ordered, nice grill marks. Portions were generous, we have lunch for tomorrow as well. The decor could use a bit of work, but, oh well. Some reviewers complained about the tables with holes to throw shells in and the styrofoam plates. But hey, if I am digging into a big old plate of crab legs, cracking shells, juice dripping down my arm, I'd like to be in a place that I feel it's ok to dig in and have fun enjoying my food! And a place to throw my shells? Yes, please! Prices aren't cheap, but it's fair pricing for seafood. And it was well worth the money!

Interesting reviews seems you either love or hate this place. As someone who has eaten seafood at Boston, Baltimore, Florida, and California, I would like to believe, I know good seafood. I have no problem rating this restaurant a 5 out of 5. This place is all about shellfish so please do not order anything else. Your table has a big trash can in the middle to dispose all the shells. We ordered the steamed oyster for $17.00, here's the deal. By ordering this you get 24-30 oysters compared to 12 raw oysters for $15.00 the catch is for the steamed oysters you have to shuck the oysters yourself well worth it and kind of fun. The best is when you get that wonderful seafood juice from the oyster. For entree ordered the shell-house platter, which came with oysters, fresh shrimp, whole crawfish, and snow crab steamed in Old Bay everything was wonderful and fresh you can not go wrong if you love shell fish in its natural state!

I went here about 6 yrs. ago because it was recommended as fresh seafood. NOT. The only reason I went back is because our friend wanted to go here for his BD. I ordered the fried scallops, which you could not even taste scallop only salt and old fat is was fried in. The other guests I was with were unhappy too. Good thing there were hushpuppies to eat. This is not fine dining and the seafood is 3rd rate at best. The peach cobbler is canned peaches. Service was fine & restaurant ambience okay. I know people go here in droves, but not for me anymore.

We both enjoyed it alot. The prices are a but higher than one might think but the food it great. The shellfish platter was big enough for two, I don't recomend the green beans (tasted like they came form a can). Yummie Colesalaw though. The nice thing was they had a sling that would hold our baby's car seat and high chairs for children old enough for those. Food was fast, the servers were helpfull and know the menue, food came out fast also. O the Missippi Mud pie was very good also. Paper plates, plastic wear.

If I could give this place less than 1 star I would. We went here yesterday for a military function. They separated our group into two completely different areas so that half the group could not hear what was going on. They charged us $22 per person for a paper plate with plastic utensils and under and overcooked (depending on what it was) food. The tables were sticky and had not been cleaned. It smelled bad, and the service is awful. Most of our group waited 20+ minutes to get a glass of water. Someone at our table asked for crackers and the waitress said no even though there were crackers at the bar. One guy asked for chicken and was given fish (and they looked exactly the same! Gross!) If you want seafood in the Savannah area, this is not it!!!

  • Beverly S.

Ordered the low country boil, and when I finished eating I still had 25 shrimp left. Very pricey considering they use all plastic plates and utensils. But it was fun if you like getting messy. Shrimp had to be peeled.

I went here just last week with my family while visiting. I miss the fresh seafood I used to get when I lived in Savannah and had to have some while in the area. On a Saturday night the wait was really short but the service was slow. We waited longer to have our drink order taken than we did on a table. Then we waited another 15 minutes for her to take our order. However, the food was hot and fresh when it arrived. I had the Crab Leg and Shrimp Steamed Combo. It was cooked well and seasoned nicely. The corn was sweet and I had the coleslaw, which was not very good, but there were plenty of other sides to choose from. It's not my FAVORITE place for seafood in Savannah, but it was very good.

Yum, yum, yummy seafood. My husband and I had the crab legs and they sure were tasty. Neat atmosphere, too. Pretty pricey though so be prepared to spend right around $20 a plate.

Crab stew was salty; inadvertently served cool and way overpriced. Biggest disappointment on the trip to Savannah. Better to go hungry than eat here.

ambiance: pretend you had a picnic planned, everything was packed and you were ready to rock n roll. then along came the rain. well you're still hungry aren't you? so you have the picnic indoors, which isn't quite what you had expected, but cest la vie.... the eats: if you simply order the crawfish and shrimp boil, and apply the lovely goodness of butter, you should be quite satisfied. the sides and other extras can be thrown into the nifty circular file residing in the center of the table!* READY, AIM, FIRE! * i want one!

It was always a treat to eat here when I was a kid growing up in Savannah, so it was a great delight to return many years later after moving away and growing up...and I was not disappointed. While the Shell House has less outdoor seating options than the Crab Shack, and is on a pond rather than the marsh, the food is undeniably better. The Crab Shack markets itself as a local secret...well, the real secret is the Shell House. Just like the Crab Shack, they've got the holes in the middle of the table for your shells, and it comes in handy. After all these years, the Shell House still serves the best crab in Savannah.

  • Steven N.

I went here on a weekend I had off. I had ordered this large multi-item platter. There was crab, crawfish, oysters, shrimp, etc. This food tasted fantastic! I sat at the bar and was able to enjoy blue moon on tap while I feasted on this meal. I was unable to finish it. I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but I do remember it was well worth the price.

  • Robert B.

We're from Texas. Wanted "low country" seafood. Saw The Shellhouse. It looked from the menu that the only thing local was shrimp, blue crabs and oysters, and little emphasis on them. We ordered the low country boil-shrimp, sausage, corn & potatoes. Shrimp OK, sausage was awful. Corn was frozen & reheated, barely. Potatoes were bakers. We'd expected the corn & red potatoes to have been boiled then the shrimp thrown in. DO NOT GO HERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES IF YOU WANT DECENT FOOD. And this is disposable city--plastic disposable plates, eating utensils--paper towels (understandable with boiled seafood), pre-packaged "whipped spread" & something called sour creme for the taters. It sucked big time.
