1st this isn't your mother's bakery so if you're looking for doughnuts then exit stage left. Alright to those who didn't run for the hills they do sell other sweets like , cookies, cupcakes, banana pudding & and my all-time favorite cinnamon but sadly they only sells these babies on Saturday :-( . They sell breakfast , lunch & even bread in this retro spot . They have something for everyone, the only reason it gets 4 stars is the don't have a dedicated parking lot .

BEST VANILLA CUPCAKE I have ever tried! My husband and I love cupcakes. We also both believe that if you can do a vanilla cupcake well, then that is a really good sign. We were blown away by the moist cupcake and tasty frosting. We also had a chocolate cupcake too which was really good. What a treat to find a true made-from-scratch bakery. As much as I love Sprinkle's cupcakes, there is something really special about a family bakery like this one. We were visiting from out of town, so here's a TIP for out-of-towners if you plan to stock up on dessert treats. It is better if you arrive closer to 11am or 11:30am. We arrived around 10am, so they had been almost cleared out of their morning pastries. They said that most of the goods come out closer to lunch. We weren't able to try anything else because we had other places to go. However, we will definitely stop by again if we are ever in Savannah.

I am simply reviewing today because I'm so disappointed. I can't say I'm disappointed in the food or drinks due to the fact that I arrived today at 10am to find that the bakery was closed for vacation until August 12th. The owners were inside and they waved and went to the back. I was so excited to try the bakery as I have the cookbook and it was my last day in Savannah. Nowhere does it say on the website, blog or anywhere that it's closed. I will go cry myself to sleep tonight thinking of all the delicious sweets I could have stuffed in my mouth.

I convinced my husband to stop here on our way out of Savannah, after I had been considering buying the cookbook. I had also heard/seen a number of rave reviews. My husband and I were both a little disappointed in the selection/variety. I guess I was expecting more options to choose from. We settled on a strawberry biscone (my husband) and I ordered a lavender lemon cookie and mexican chocolate cookie. My husband said the biscone was good. My lavender cookie was very tasty (and soft!), whereas the mexican chocolate seemed a little dry.

As far as quality of food goes, this place is 5 stars however when you factor in the price, I have to say I wouldn't be able to go here often seeing that 2 sandwiches, a cookie and a pastry cost us over $25. Again, you will not regret the taste of anything you get but you will pay about 8-10 dollars/item. Unique seating environment but we could t find a seat! Why? They are very popular. Lots of locals in while we were there. Drop in and try the chicken sandwich or the 3-cheese panini.

Great place for lunch, we had great sandwiches. We also had wonderful cupcakes, lavender cookies and lemon bars. The employees were delightful! If I lived in the area, I would be a regular!

My large group of women stumbled upon this place on our rainy morning walk in Savannah and knew it had to be good as the line was out the door. From lattes and tea to salads, sandwiches, and sweets, we were delighted with everything. The adorable workers are so friendly and kind. Thank you, Back in the Day, for such a warm welcome to lovely Savannah!

If you live in Savannah, you know that Back In The Day is more than delicious brownies cupcakes and cookies. They also serve lunch from 11 to 3PM. One of the lunch sandwiches is the pig and pimento cheese sandwich. Pimento cheese is making a condiment comeback and that sandwich leads the charge. On Saturdays, go for the cinnamon rolls which are decadent and the breakfast biscuit sammie which is like your grandma's biscuits.

This place is fantastic! My friend who lives in savannah goes here on a weekly basis and brought us during our visit. It's a tiny bakery with the most amazing food! We got the savory ham and cheese, egg sammie, an choc chip cookie, and a bourbon bread pudding. We ate everything but the bread pudding which we took to go. It was all so amazing! The biscuits were the most fluffy delicious biscuits I have ever tastes. The ham and cheese was a flaky croissant with ham and cheese baked into it. The cookie wad oozing with so much chocolate it was unreal. They aren't open sundays otherwise I would probably go again today! To die for!

Visited twice on a recent trip to Savannah. First time we arrived toward the end of the day; server was super friendly and let us sit for a bit after ordering -- did not try to rush us out of the shop. Tried their key lime tart and Hobnob - perfect for an afternoon snack with coffee. Stopped by again on a Saturday morning for a breakfast treat because I'd read about their decadent cinnamon rolls. Tender, chewy bun with cinnamon spice, slathered in a toothsome amount of syrupy, buttery caramel. The homemade white frosting on top added to the high caloric intake but somehow did not overpower the overall sweetness of the pastry. Definitely a winner on this trip! Boyfriend selected the ham and cheese croissant, which they warmed up for him. Fresh, flaky pastry with an even distribution of savory ham, cheese, and pepper. Cute decor and perky ambiance inside - definitely much more relaxed and laid-back than New York. Would recommend to friends who visit the area! PS: the coffee here is OK; boyfriend and I picked up pastries here and actually went back to Sentient Bean on the south end of Forsyth Park for better iced coffees (but terrible food) and to enjoy the view of the Spanish moss on the trees in the AM.

Incredible service. Inventive, delicious sandwiches and pastry. YUMMY Coffee! The Pimento Cheese sandwich will make you swoon. Adorable lay out and retro baking products for sale. I can't recommend highly enough!

I feel lucky to live so close to such a great place. From the cakes and cookies to the excellent bread to the breakfast and lunch sandwiches and coffee, I've never been disappointed. Staff is friendly and helpful. I just wish they were open on Sunday. I mean, it's a bakery! They make incredible biscuits. They put delicious egg soufflé and other things on them, or just butter and jam. They brew excellent coffee. How is this place not open on Sundays?!?!?! Despite that, I am a huge fan and love BitD.

CLOSED!!? Drove all the way from out of state to visit Savannah and Back in the Day was on the list. Website clearly says open til 5. We arrive and a paper sign taped on the door, "New Hours " and closed at 4. Thanks for that. You suck.

I was so excited to come to Back in the Day while visiting Savannah. I have the cookbook and have some enjoyed some of the recipes (although some have also been misses). I read the yelp reviews and so many people love it. Unfortunately, I am not a fan. My friend and I arrived at 2:30pm on a Saturday and they only had 2 types of cupcakes left!!! No cinnamon rolls, chocolate cupcakes, chocolate cookies...very disappointing. I got a latte, which was good, and an old fashioned cupcake. I think it was made a few days ago. :-(. Extremely dry. Even the frosting was dry. If you decide to come, you've been warned.

    (2)
  • Stephanie g.

Absolutely the best old fashioned cupcakes on earth. I don't know what they do but the icing is fabulous. The grilled pimento cheese and the bacon onion paninis are amazing as well! I have to stop here every time i'm in Savannah!

I'll be honest, half the reason I booked a trip to Savannah was to come here. I mean have you seen the cover of the cookbook? Too cute. So we go in about 9:30am on a Tuesday and it looks like maybe we've been beaten to the punch by throngs of people as there isn't much in the cases. I was expecting cupcakes but none were to be seen and we were told they were making vanilla ones later. We got a puff pastry and bourbon bread pudding instead. Both were good. I was psyched to see the owners in the back of the bakery toiling over doughs and such and other bakery groupies were excitedly sneaking a peek as well. They worked not speaking, no smiles and wouldn't even glance up. I don't know what harm it would've done to look up, smile/wave to the people who buy your wares and go back to work but it seemed they weren't up for it that day. The next day, we went back for some goodies for the road, same time. This time they had those cupcakes...apparently vanilla is all they make? They were two bite sized which was kind of disappointing so we got two cookies...the choc chip shortbread and chocolate chip. The icing was good on the cupcake but the cake tasted like cornbread. Threw that away. The shortbread? Dry. When I make shortbread it's buttery and this just crumbled and had no taste, not even much on the chocolate chip front. The regular chocolate chip was good after we heated it up. Again the owners were present and when more adoring fans went to the bakery window to see them at work, the male half left the viewing area to talk to a local cop that came in and the woman turned her back to them. I'm sorry but that just kind of turned me off. I know they're in and out of cookbook tours to promote and may have been tired or whatever but their cookbook came off my wish list after that. One day of blatant ignoring due to a bad moon, I can overlook but two days make me wonder if you appreciate the business. :-(

Cutest place ever. It's a really fun place to meet for coffee and a cupcake! Unless they have run out of the cupcakes.... The coffee isn't tops, but the atmosphere makes up for it.

Although not centrally located, it is worth a stop into or out of town. The cupcake was moist and fun, while the key lime was tart and great.

After three bad encounters with this place, I decided to give it one last chance. Yelp Challenge 12/100 I love giving chances to local business and this time they deserve a good feedback. Please make sure you wake up at 8 AM for these incredible buns, they are worth running into walls, sleep walking, and a bag of money. These are the best cinnamon buns I tasted in my life. Their not dry, flaky type of buns you buy from the mall. Conviction- The cinnamon buns coil are moist slathered in cinnamon and sweeten to perfection. The frosting is home made you can tell with just one bite. It tasted sweet yet custard like and makes a great taste. I had a pleasant experience this morning.. I will be back for these buns.

Yumm everything here was delicious! We came here on a visit to Savannah based on their nomination for Best Bakery in the James Beard awards. Back in the Day offers European style dark crusty breads as well as more typically American pastries - sticky buns, cupcakes, brownies - so there is really something for everyone. They are def on the expensive side ($7 for a loaf of whole grain bread, $2 / cookie, $3.70 / ham and cheese croissant) but for a Saturday breakfast out it's great. The space is very pretty but the neighborhood it is in not so much. It would have been helpful if they had prices on all products and there was a way other than asking the cashier what sandwiches consisted of, but that cannot cloud my love of this bakery!

What a lovely cafe! We had the ham and cheese croissant, a berry "biscone", almond biscotti, and bought a loaf of French Country bread to take home that made the best toast ever. The staff was very friendly, the coffee fresh (with homemade syrups!), and the shabby-chic decor is perfect. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in Savannah!

We split the grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. Delicious! The bread was so good! Also had a milk chocolate cupcake, the icing was amazing. Cute shop with unique decor. The staff were all very friendly. Definitely glad we stopped by!

This is a great bakery with creative lunches and an awesome gift shop! It's really fun and it is NOT in a bad neighborhood at all...its in a perfect spot with gritty, artsy feel -- totally safe! So with the visit! Yummy!!

Just ate here yesterday and had a great experience. I got a load of bread, the biscuits and jam, and the cinnamon roll. Although I do not like cream cheese icing, the rolls were delish! Beware there is caramel on it, which sounds weird but 100% worth giving a chance. They were so good! The loaf of Italian bread I got was still warm when I got it home. Everything looked so good and I felt like I was on a movie set or at Disney World because all the decor is so perfectly curated.

My friend had their cookbook and said we should visit when we were in Savannah and I am so glad we did. The decor is vintage charming, the staff extremely friendly, and the food was wonderful. We had sandwiches and had to try their delicious desserts. The lavender cookies are a must!

We stop here on Saturdays after the farmers market for two things: cinnamon buns and fresh bread for the week. We try to get there before they run out of the cinnamon buns, but after sampling the bourbon bread pudding, biscuits and jam, chocolate chip cookies, pecan sticky buns, lemon cream bars, etc....you get the idea...everything is worth the visit. We have only tried a few of the lunch options, the jamon and curry chicken, both of which were really good. We love the bread - all loaves we are have been great. On top of the foods, they manage to brew some pretty decent coffee. The iced coffe is particularly good if you want a standard brew (not cold brew) iced coffee. This has become part of our Saturday routine (when able) and we look forward to next week!

  • Casey C.

Wow, what a gem! The ham & cheese croissant is peppery and perfect. My husband said the ham and tallegio on a ciabatta was easily in the top 5 best sandwiches of his life! Service was perfect southern hospitality. Got stuff to take home to Indy :)

  • Aleks K.

The vanilla cupcake w choc frosting was phenomenal. I had a Mexican cookie with milk, as well. Hit the spot. We were lucky to be there as loaves of bread were being put out, got a hot loaf and ate it with our hands. I was transported back to my childhood in Poland eating fresh, hot loaves at my grandmother's house. Parking on the street was easy, the decor of the place is charming, love that they sell cards, vintage looking glassware made in the USA. We bought a little dish that looks like a diner check, take the girl, out of Jersey but can't take the Jersey out of the girl.

We made the long walk down Bull Street from the historic district to try the "must have banana pudding." Unfortunately with the owners out of town on a book tour (shelves lined with said book) and none of the other bakers knowing the recipe to banana pudding, we were not able to try. That being said, we split the Rosemary Chicken sandwich and it was great! Not your typical chicken salad, much more chicken, great black current flavor, spicy mayo, and crunchy celery. It was an overall good consolation to no pudding! Try the key lime pie bar if the owners are still on a book tour, it was a great combo of crunchy sweet crust and tart key lime.

This was one of the first places in Savannah that my husband and I discovered when we first moved here, after reading about them in a book about the city-- and now it is a part of our Saturday morning routine. Everything is absolutely delicious! All of their baked goods are unique and amazing-- from items like Mexican hot chocolate cookies, bacon jam pillow pastries, gigantic cinnamon buns, lavender sugar cookies, donut muffins, bacon cheddar biscones, star brownies, pumpkin crunch bars, savory ham and cheese, and the list of d items goes on and on! My favorite newer item is the egg breakfast Sammie. It's a deliciously seasoned egg soufle sandwich on a fresh biscuit. The Mayan mocha is a wonderfully spiced hot chocolate with cayenne pepper for a slight kick. When in savannah, definitely check this place out. You won't be disappointed!

A-MA-ZING! Cheryl Day has one of the most amazing bakeries I've ever been to. Any time we are in Savannah we always stop in. It is not in Downtown Savannah, but its totally worth the short drive out to it. Visually this bakery is amazing! They have done such an amazing job decorating the place. Even if your plan is to just grab something and go, you are drawn in by the decor and end up wanting to sit for a spell. Add in the amazing, I mean AMAZING, baked goods and you could be there for awhile. They also have lunch now and a variety of drinks. I know there are a lot of bakeries out there now, but I truly feel this is one that you need to make time to stop at if you are in town. You'll thank me :)

I have eaten here many, many times and have not put a crumb past my lips that was not delicious. The cupcakes are a classic, the lavendar butter cookie was amazing, the newest arrival--the croissant--was the size of my head, crisp and buttery, the bread is perfection, and the blondie brownie was a boozie beauty. There is also a small retail area with Rifle paper company goods, vintage cake stands and creamers, and other goodies. They also do orders for special events--for Thanksgiving we had their orange chess pie which was THE best pie we have EVER had.

Fresh bread! We ordered 3 different sandwiches, all were lovely - bacon and onion panini, the farmwich, and ham and cheese - we loved all 3. But the bread was what made it.. You can tell it's fresh! Also ordered a vanilla on vanilla cupcake- which was good- the cake part was not overlooked- however nothing amazing about it. Would recommend to friends for a awesome little brunch place. Atmosphere is cute, coffee is good - may have to look or wait for a table though.

A waitress at one of the local restaurants recommended this place to us. All I can say is get the Miss Hannah cookie! Or get multiple...this was the kind of cookie that was worth our long walk in the gross humidity. When my husband and I were done sharing the cookie when we were in the park I honestly thought about turning back for more. He ordered some type of chocolate chip cookie and it wasn't as good but it still wasn't bad. Stop in if you have a chance!

I don't get the hype surrounding this place. We went once shortly after we moved to Savannah and got cupcakes, I can't remember the flavor but I do remember I wasn't at all impressed by the taste. Gave it a second try and ordered a Mexican Hot Chocolate cookie, a cupcake, and creme brulee cheesecake. The cheesecake was yummy, the other 2 treats were very unimpressive- the cupcake tasted stale. I do love the vibe of this place, so I will probably continue to stop in from time to time but there are definitely better sweet treats available elsewhere in Savannah!

We had baguette sandwiches that were simple and very fresh. A tad bit expensive for what it was. Curry-chicken baguette sandwich was superb. Lemon-cream pie was quite nice, though could have had more lemon flavor/lemon zest. Nice service. Recommended.

Oh my goodness their red velvet...... it was ELYSIUM. If rainbows had a flavor it would be back in the day's red velvet cupcake! Their homemade blood orange soda was delish too! perfect combo. Oh an a ciabatta to go :) what a great day.

Real disappointment here. Been here before - good baked goods, lots of sugar, cute stuff and expensive. But the customer service has reached new lows. Wanted to come in and order a cake for my niece's birthday. Friday morning, about 11 am, need it ready for pick up Tuesday afternoon. The line is snaked around the lobby. I asked the cashier about order a cake before I waited in line. She said they would, but need two days notice as owners are out of town and they are busy. Count on my fingers one, two, three, four, five. Five days before Tuesday. Wait TEN minutes in line and get up to the desk. Same girl asks "Have you decided on something?" I said, "Yes, I need to order a cake for Tuesday." Her answer, unapologetically, "We can't do that - we need TWO days notice." Seems they are closed on Monday, so that does not count. The day you order does not count. They might be busy on Saturday and Sunday so those can't count. I guess that must be the reasoning. I asked her, curtly, why she just told me two days if they can't do it. Her response was "We need two days notice, call back next week." Now, that is not just BAD service, that is just rude. I cannot understand why the absent owners, who are out trying to sell their book (I will not be buying one), can't hire someone who might at least feign a little interest in someone wanting to drop $75 on a birthday cake. But nope, need two days notice to do that. I will never waste my time to wander up to Starland to be treated rudely and get a sugar rush. I can do that by going to Starbucks on Broughton. FYI - I called LuLu's. Most helpful person answered the phone, helped me figure out what to order the niece, what they might decorate it with and talked me down a size on the cake. $60, and they will have it ready ON TUESDAY, at their chocolate shop on MLK. Double checked the order and thanked me up and down, Go to LuLus! Skip Back in the Day.

How excited was I to see Back in the Day Bakery featured in one of the Southern Living magazines I received??! Clearly, I've had their sweet treats prior to the edition, and agree wholeheartedly with how they were represented in the article. Red Velvet cupcakes are scrumpdiliumptious! I enjoyed the vanilla min cupcakes, too. Make a special trip to Bull St when in Savannah!!

I would never have stopped into this sweet little bakery if it hadn't been for Diva Dogs (my sweet baby boy's groomers) moving in a few doors down. Providence, baby, providence. I was greeted warmly, despite it being almost the end of their day, and encouraged to take my time. But not in that snarky way that you expect from some coffee places. I have this new thing where I always ask for a recommendation and then go with whatever the person offers me, even if it is something I would never order (earlier this year it led to the ONLY time I ate lamb this whole year...I typically avoid it on principle). I asked the girl (99.9% sure her name was Erin...she was FANTASTIC!!) for a recommendation and she encouraged me to get either a dirty chai or to enjoy one of thier housemade syrups in coffee. I got a DELICIOUS iced latte with the honey lavender syrup and was in HEAVEN! The coffee was super tasty and the syrup was lovely...and DIFFERENT. I'm a fan of random lattes (almond, raspberry, almond joy), but this was something you couldn't really hope to find anywhere else. I was impressed. I also was impressed by their baked good selection. I got some cookies and cupcakes for myself and my roommate and they were gone by the end of the night...super tasty, great options to pick from, something for everybody. I'm so glad that Diva Dogs moved and exposed me to a whole new location of coffee and confectionary goodness in Savannah!

My boyfriend and I were in Savannah for a wedding and being the foodies we are, we wanted to try all sorts of places! I asked for suggestions from my many friends who are from/live in Savannah and this was a suggestion for great coffee. We got english breakfast tea, cappuccino, and a bacon cheddar scone. You guys... that scone. It was amazing. I was sort of nervous about ordering a scone because I don't like when they are really crunchy. This was not crunchy at all. Totally melt in your mouth and the fresh black peppercorn was a wonderful added spice. So. Delicious. Now I know tea is tea, usually. I'm not sure the brand they used for their breakfast tea but it had a stellar flavor! Loved it. We went for a mid-morning post breakfast and pre lunch treat and it was slightly crowded. The vibe was AWESOME. I loved the decor and furnishings. It isn't in the best part of town, but it is worth visiting. Yum.

I first learned of BDB while exploring the cookbook section at Barnes & Noble. There was this cute pale pink, white, and baby blue cover, displaying a vintage-inspired bakery that was right up my alley. I came to learn of its location. With us headed to Savannah, I bookmarked it so as not to miss out on seeing it in person. It was everything and more. It had sweet cake stands and tea towels, vintage and reproduction glassware and seating. I loved its quaint counter offering bourbon bread pudding, their famous lemon bars, and cookies in glass jars. They also sell artisan breads. I was there during a weekday, so I did not get to snag one of their [also famous] biscuits. I am not done with Savannah yet or Back in the Day Bakery, especially after having the latter's chai with soy milk. No joke. BEST ON THIS EARTH (so far)!

Best latte EVER. They have house made syrups and I had them add the vanilla to mine. This place should not be missed if you are in Savannah! The bread pudding and cookies were amazing. The atmosphere here really is kitschy cute. I can't wait to go back!

First off now that I dont live within 2 blocks of this place anymore Im pretty sad. I would visit often to grab a french baguette or Ciabatta loaf to pair with dinner. In my opinion they are one of the tops in the city if your looking for Ciabatta. Their french baguette is good but there are a couple that I could grab from the Forsyth Farmers market that I liked better. Now on to the restaurant aspect of this place which from the moment you walk in you know its going to have some flare to their food just by the decorations and vibe. If you have read any of my other reviews you know that I am on a quest to find the best sandwich in Savannah (if you have suggestions please share) and this place has a sandwich in the running. The Bacon Onion Panini is the sandwich I am speaking of and it is worth the travel to this spot. I've already made my point on how good the Ciabatta bread which is sliced and smothered in a Bacon-Onion "Jam" that seems to be a mixture of bacon, caramelized onions, and herbs. They then put this bad boy on the Panini press and it turns in to a masterpiece. I have also tried the State Fair and it was a very good panini but no where near as good as the above mentioned. I really want to try the Bacon Pimento Panini and I will have to force myself to get this sandwich instead next time. This is a great restaurant in a great up and coming part of town, the Starland District. There is a lot of great shops and great eating in the northern part of downtown if you willing to travel out of the norm. The only reason I am not giving this place 5 stars is because they are a bakery first by name and they have a very limited selection of backed goods. Dont get me wrong, while they dont do a lot they do what they do very well. Give this place a shot!

I've been going to Back in the Day for several years, even before tour buses started dropping people off in front of the bakery. The place can get really crowded when a tour bus stops but service is quick and friendly. I really like the Red Velvet cupcakes especially when they do cute toppers (I've seen ballerinas and they had flags for Memorial day weekend.) However the real star for me is the chocolate chip cookies. They are the best I have ever had. The other thing I love about the bakery is the atmosphere of this place it is just darling.

My first connection with this amazing place, came when I bought their amazing cookbook. I have received many compliments on the baked goods I made from their recipes. On our weekend visit to Savannah from Atlanta, I insisted we take a cab from downtown to visit the bakery. My fellow travelers were happy I did. Amazing baked goods, which I suspected. Bust also one of the coolest spaces. We also were blown away by how nice and friendly the staff are. All of them offered ideas about other places to eat and seemed very happy to work there. Just want anyone wants. Then the cupcakes: amazingly fresh, moist and beautiful. Fantastic frosting that was the perfect amount. We also took cookies and brownies to go. The Mexican Coca Shortbread is one of the best cookies ever. If you are visiting Savannah, this bakery is worth the short cab ride from the center of town.

OMG. I walked in just as they were opening and had a hot out of the oven oatmeal cookie with frosting on top. The girls were friendly and I got a coffee and chatted it up while trying not to drool on myself from the most awesome flavors of the totally rad cookie. The seating is plentiful and has a unique feel to the place with lots of space, free weefee (french for wifi), and outdoor seating as well. I'll be back to check out the lunch menu after I run forsyth 15 times to make up for the cookie ;)

I wish I could be here all the time. The best cupcakes! The best Chai Tea! The best staff! The best atmosphere if you are looking for peaceful and cozy... I would like it if they were open later, but they are great!

Finally able to try this much talked about bakery and was so happy to discover a new love. This cupcake was delightful. Beautiful fluffy sweet plentiful icing on top of buttery moist cake. The macaroons were wonderful, the fresh bread - terrific. The service was very nice and helpful. One of the majorly important things was that the coffee here is a beauty. Will definitely return when in town again.

I ordered the bacon pimento panini. It's so flavorful and rich....and delicious. The bread is what sets it off. I brought an "Old Fashion" cupcake home for dessert and was thankful I didn't buy more because I could have ate a dozen.

Pimento and bacon panini. Good Lord I am ashamed...but not enough to care. This was delicious. Service was lackluster, but I left the 4 stars anyway. Mark it in your brain as 3.5

Great bread (so hard to find in Savannah) even better biscuits, and fantastic brownies. Get here early because the morning rush clears out a lot of their merchandise.

I am a cookbook junkie and I ran across the Back in the Day Bakery cookbook while browsing Amazon. We dropped into Savannah for a few hours on our way to GA from Hilton Head and were feeling and looking a bit bedraggled. We drove through a beautiful historic district to get to the shop (which is not in the district). We walked straight into whimsy (see our photo of the marshmallow chandelier). Being from PA and unable to return easily, we sampled A LOT! We loved the lavender shortbread and the chocolate cupcakes and the bourbon bread pudding. The vanilla icing was a little too sweet for us. There was a waitress from West VA who was very sweet. We would definitely go back and I will now be ordering the cookbook!

Such a wonderful place to visit when in Savannah. Stocked up on gifts for friends back home, including their adorable chocolate brioche bread. The location is off the beaten path and not walkable from historic Savannah, but don't let that deter you. Great selection of sandwiches and a cute gift area!

A friend recommended this place and it's nice. Very eclectic clientèle and decor. The food is delicious. The bacon and onion sandwich is very tasty with a touch of heat. The chicken curry was a great taste in every bite. Desserts are the real deal. Seriously leave room for them. The drunken blondie...OMG.

Out of all the places in Savannah where you can partake in butter-disguised-as-something-else, Back in the Day is the absolute best place to let (your belt) loose. They take gourmet cupcakes and cutesy vintage to a whole new level in this darling throw-back cafe -- which you must know is a bit outside of the tourist district, making it extra special and so worth the trek. Our routine is always lunch at Starlander (across the street), with room for a lavendar shortbread cookie, "Star brownie", or ultra-frosted cupcake from Back in the Day. Their goods are Martha Stewart worthy, for sure. I've always wanted to sit, stay and relish in the pastel-hued, sugar-scented ambiance, but all good lunch breaks must come to an end. Go. Eat. Love!

Back in the Day has my favorite cupcakes of any I've had! I think I've tried every type, and each one was delicious. I also enjoy the sandwiches and the cool vibe of the place.

I learned of Back in the Day Bakery on Paula Deen's Home Cooking. She frequently had Cheryl Day on the show, and I tucked her away in my memory bank. Over the summer I moved to Savannah to complete a Yoga Teacher Training and knew that Back in the Day Bakery would be a hot spot for me. I started slow. Keeping things simple. I bought a cookie (Mexican Hot Chocolate) to start, then transitioned into a cupcake (Red Velvet...the southern classic). All the basic treats were delicious. I moved on to bigger and better things like the "Drunken Blondie" which may be the MOST delicious dessert I've ever had (and I've had A LOT of desserts in my life) and the Chai Latte which was soooo sweet and delicious. I visited Back in the Day Bakery as often as possible during my month in Savannah and recommended it to pretty much every person that I met. In addition to the ooey-gooey and scrumptious desserts, the decor of the bakery is awesome. It fits the name of "Back in the Day" with a very retro feel. I wanted to buy every single item in the retail portion of the store. I wholeheartedly recommend Back in the Day Bakery. It is the eatery I miss most in Savannah.

I never thought a vanilla buttercream cupcake could taste so good. I love how this place sticks to the basics. Best cupcake I've found on the east coast - a must do in Savannah! It's worth the short drive from the historic district.

I would love to actually say that I ate here, but, unfortunately, I never ate one morsel at this place. So, why am I reviewing, do you ask? Well, while traveling to Savannah and after reading a great review in Frommer's (remember, when people read travel guides?), my family and I ventured into this really shady neighborhood to eat lunch at what was supposed to be a not only a great bakery, but a great lunch spot. By the time we finally got there (after walking through a really not so nice part of the city), the really rude person behind the counter told us that the kitchen closed 15 minutes ago. Not even a "sorry," or "here's some ice tea; I can see that you and your family are drenched in sweat." We turned around and left. Even though I never ate here, am giving them a zero for lack of customer service and plenty of (bad) attitude.

If you are looking for a real authentic bakery, where everything is truly made from scratch, GO TO Back In The Day Bakery. Everything if FRESH daily. The banana pudding is excellent! Cupcakes and cookies excellent! They serve sandwiches beginning at 11:00am for the lunch crowd. The Rosemary Chicken salad sandwich is awesome. We have been to Savannah 3 times since last October, and this is the first place we go when we get into town. Cheryl and her husband, Griff, put their heart and soul into everything they make. And, they are extremely friendly!! If you don't have their cookbook...get it! To the entire staff at Back In The Day Bakery, thank you, and keep up the great work!

Got to visit here on a Culinary Tour, oh-my-goodness. This place is absolutely delicious. I'm not a huge sweets person but these cupcakes are delicious. They taste absolutely delicious like they are home made. They are the perfect combination of frosting and soft cake. The facility is also very adorable, and the girls who worked there were extremely friendly and nice.

This is one adorable little bakery, and although it's off the beaten "tourist" path in Savannah I'd definitely recommend a trip down Bull Street to check it out! There's a decidedly retro feel in the shop, from the little cake toppers and candles for sale in the little retail section to the frilly aprons worn by the shop staff. If you're looking for a brief jaunt back in time this is the place. We arrived around lunchtime on a Saturday; at that point all the bread had been sold out (it must be good, right?) but we did snag a couple of sandwich cookies and a bourbon bread pudding. The serving on that bread pudding was massive. Definitely enough to split comfortably between a couple of people. I enjoyed my molasses sandwich cookie. The cookies were crisp with a gingery bite; the marshmallow frosting filling was decadent. In the future I'd probably just go for the cookie. Friendly service and a nice place to sit and relax for a bit.

Quite possibly the cutest bakery I've ever been to in my life. None of the pictures here do it justice. I'm not sure how they went about decorating the inside, but it looks like they took everything I like (vintage kitsch! baking things! pink! blue! bunting! paper lanterns!) and went to town. The staff was friendly. I noticed that they served lunch, but we had just eaten lunch so we decided to sample their sweets. We got a chocolate and a vanilla cupcake and a lavender sugar cookie/buttercream sandwich-thing. I was pleased with all of these. The cupcakes were firm but not dry and the icing was good, not too buttery but not fake-y tasting like grocery store icing. The lavender cookie sandwich was very good, too, very different. I was pretty disappointed that they didn't have any red velvet cupcakes the day I went. Red velvet is my favorite and I was really hoping to have some while I was down south. Next time I visit Savannah I will definitely stop here. In my opinion, the ambience alone is worth a visit. It doesn't hurt that the baked good are delicious, too.

Back in the Day Bakery puts a smile on my face :) My favorite quick lunch spot for fresh, hearty sandwiches. Many flock here for the desserts, which I admit are very very good (OMG bread pudding). But there bread and thick cut meats speak to my heart. I do not work near Back in the Day but take the 10 minute drive once a week. Every. Single. Sandwich. is sooo yummy. I feel like I am doing myself a disservice spreading the word. Regardless, Back in Day has gained a multiude of loyal, gracious customers!

First time visitor to Savannah, GA 8/8/2012. A "neighborhood" bakery with a quaint feel and friendly service. We visited for breakfast and had the savory ham pastry...that had a bit of a much enjoyed KICK...(a bit like blackening seasoning of sorts). The bread pudding...was "to die for"... And a biscone that was deeeelish... If you want a place just to sit and chill for breakfast...this is. Then went back after lunch for a cup cake. Busier... Would like to try their savory lunches goods. Bought the book... also filled with interesting recipes.

They are a little slow making beverages, but they are worth the wait. And the desserts are awesome too. We stopped in a couple times in one week and they recognized us on the second visit AND remembered the drink order from before, NICE! Check this place out, you will not be disappointed.

Back in the Day is adorable. This bright, open space sports kitschy vintage decor and fun colors, and there's plenty of seating should you wish to sit and linger over coffee and a treat. This place is conveniently located around the corner from a record shop, where the boyfriend was busy sifting through dusty vinyl. I stopped in to grab a cold drink and kill some time. The Drunken Blondie caught my eye, so I ordered up one of those to go with my iced latte; it was dense, moist, and filled with butterscotch flavor, with just the teensiest hint of bourbon. The iced coffee was great as well. BitD also has a lunch menu with soup and some nice sounding sandwiches, many of them vegetarian. Perhaps we'll give one of them a whirl when we next find ourselves in Savannah...

Hey Back in the Day, I love your sweet treats but when I stopped in to splurge on lunch for myself (I'm on a budget!), I was sorely disappointed! The $9 Happy Day salad that I ordered was missing 2 of the toppings that your menu listed would come in it, including the watermelon. The toppings that did come on it were sparse! When I inquired about it, the person working said that you haven't included the fruit for a long time because you can't get it form your suppliers. Fine, no problem, but at least edit the menu so I'm aware before I order my food! When I go out and spend $10 on a salad I like to choose wisely and get what I pay for. You should be kind enough to your customers to serve what you list on your menu - or adjust it to reflect what you no longer have! I guess I'll be splurging on lunch elsewhere...

Just visited Savannah from Miami for three nights....we had lunch twice at Back in the Day! It was great. The curry chicken and rosemary chicken sandwiches are amazing....as is the fresh baked bread they are made on! Between the 6 of us we also tried the: cupcakes, banana pudding, lemon bar, cookies, bread pudding, and probably more....all excellent! Beautiful building, friendly staff. Highly recommended!

Based purely on the grilled cheese, this bakery would have gotten five stars no question. Seriously, never had a grilled cheese this good before in my life. Every grilled cheese I eat will compare to this one, which kind of sucks since I'm not from around here. Anyway, the reasons it was knocked down a star was due to the fact that it was kind of a hike from the main area in the historic district and there were only 2 cupcakes to choose from! They explained that a few people came in and cleared them out completely which is why they only had the vanilla/vanilla and the chocolate/chocolate available but I've never been to a place who's known for their cupcakes only have 2 choices available! I would have killed for a red velvet. Either way, the cupcakes were pretty good! I've had better, but I still really enjoyed it and thought the frosting and cake were delicious. I would definitely come back if I were in Savannah again, though. Hopefully they will have some more choices next time.

The Super Chicken Sandwich is delicious. The Red Velvet cupcake is amazing. The nana pudding is epic. The coffee is super strong. The Star Brownies melt in your mouth. The Hazel Feel good cookies are unique and amazing. The lavender cookies (when they have them) are good. Especially if it's in their sandwich cookie - two lavender cookies with cupcake frosting in the middle!! You really can't go wrong stopping at Back in the Day Bakery!

Oh. My. Gosh! My roomie introduced me to this gem of a place today for lunch, and I am in LOVE! I had curried chicken sammie and an italian soda and its the business! I am stuffed and fat happy:) I had a sandwhich cookie filled with a delicious pink frosting filling of sorts and it was so delicious and decadent. Oh and the kettle chips they have, the flavor voodoo was recommended by the lady behind the counter, and I was not disappointed. So much flavor in one day! Everyone, please stop by and give this place a try. I can't wait to come back and try something new.

You can't go wrong with this place! SO GOOD! Everything is wonderful and tasty- the cakes, the cookies, the cupcakes, the plum tarts, the breadpudding, the sandwiches...I could go on and on. This place was just down the street from me when I lived in Savannah, and I loved it. The owner is super sweet and is coming out with a cook book soon, which I will jump at buying. Back in the Day will become a Savannah institution, if it's not already!

Back in the Day is Savannah's take on the recently trendy concept of old-school bakers doing things the old way with fresh and tasty breads, cakes, and especially it seems cupcakes showing up every morning. What Back in the Day does, they do a superb job of, and my only real complaint is that they're not open at times I would like for them to be: I won't even try to recite their bankers' hours, but suffice it to be said that half the time I went over there they appeared shut. Once you get in the door though, they have all manner of baked goodies and while their cupcakes and sandwiches seem to be their greatest draw, their breads are also quite good. My personal favorites are always the brownies, cupcakes, and the curry sandwich. Try to go early though as they also seem to make a rather small batch of things and tend to run out about an hour prior to closing, which I think is around two or three in the afternoon (on the days they are actually open). A word of warning: the neighborhood, known as Starland, where Back in the Day is located is not the best. Yes, the Starland complex with its hip shops and cute upstairs condos is very fetching but it's still a bad neighborhood near Victory Drive. I'm not one to mince words: secure your car or bike while over here. I've had a number of bike lights stolen right off my bike at this location and at the Kroger's on Gwinnett Street. My ex-boyfriend was attacked while on his bike by three thugs not far from here and it was only like ten at night. Savannah is a great city but it's got a crime problem and needs to stop glossing this fact over. Be careful out there.

Great location, friendly staff, good coffee, and great treats...what more could you want? Back in the Day has delicious cupcakes. I'm a big fan of the red velvet, moist and a dense cake. I could go for a little less frosting but the overall taste is great. The frosting isn't so sweet that it hurts your jaw. It's the perfect flavor combination with the red velvet. I've had other cakes that I'm no such a fan of, lemon coconut was a little bland. I was hoping for a lemon cake and instead its white cake with lemon frosting. I enjoy the decor and the music at the location. I would definitely recommend if you are craving cupcakes and happen to be in the area.

Try the grill cheese sandwich, not like anything you have tried before. The service is slow and the place is great in the front but not complete in the back. A little out of the way and a good walk but worth the trek.

I LOVED this place! I had a great chicken sandwich, red velvet cupcake and iced chai latte. The chicken sandwich had a really delicious sauce and all of the vegetables tasted fresh and flavorful. The bread was really good too. The cupcake was outstanding - definitely one of the best cupcakes I've ever had. The iced chai was also full of flavor and not overspiced like it is sometimes at Starbucks. Good chai to milk ratio! The decor is really cute and it was a fun place to eat lunch in. Lots of girls were dressed up in fancy dresses which added to the unique atmosphere. There's a bunch of cool art galleries on the block in back of the bakery which were interesting too. I took one star off because it is a bit pricey (I paid upwards of $16 for a small iced chai, sandwich and a cupcake) and I've had cupcakes that were just as good for much less (Sugar Sweet Sunshine in New York City charges, I think, $1.25 or $1.50 per cupcake and they're great). Maybe they could do some sort of drink/sandwich/dessert deal. Anyhow, definitely recommended if you're in Savannah.

Finally a place in Savannah worth the price of the goods and service! I had the grilled cheese sandwich...wanted more! ..and also ordered a red velvet cupcake and a chicken sandwich...all were pretty amazing. I also like the atmosphere of the place. It has a retro feel to it. A definite place to come with friends or just get lost in the back corner with a book. A must taste!

Yummy! First off let me say that the decor here is amazing. I am a huge fan. This place is a very good bakery. I tried several things including the banana bread pudding and the bacon onion jam sandwich. Both were very excellent and the bacon jam sandwich is a must try. The staff were super friendly and helpful when I was trying to pick things out. I would highly recommend a stop here when visiting Savannah as it is a place that just screams local charm. When we were there they were filming for the Paula Dean show.

I went in a purchased a chocolate cupcake, I forget the name, but it was a normal sized cupcake, with chocolate icing and sprinkles. It didn't taste extraordinary to me, and for a little over the $3 I paid, I could make my own from a mix and make the icing and it'd be just as good. I wouldn't recommend it. The selection isn't that fantastic either, they might've had seven or eight different desserts, and that's not much choice for what's supposed to be a "bakery". There are other bakerys in Savannah that I'd strongly recommend over this one, but since this review is specifically for Back in the Day bakery, I won't mention any others by name. I'm not going to go back. It's just not worth it for the quality and price.

The atmosphere is very sweet-retro/nostalgic. The baked good are creatively exicuted and amazing! There are small things about the place that are disappointing: The drink menu is limited and standard. They leave out half-n-half for customers to use for free, however they have an up charge for using soymilk, and they are skimpy in how much soymilk they pour for you. White sugar is left out for customer use; no honey.

Cheryl and Griffith 's warmth and passion for desserts is as apparent in their bakery as in the pages of their cookbook. This was on my bucket list for Savannah, and we walked 4 miles round trip in the humidity to get there. The fun, vintage retro decor was warm and cozy. The tables were large, encouraging casual group dining and conversation. We were immediately welcomed by the staff, and I loved the rockabilly vibe from their clothing to the music. Cheryl and Griffith are hands on in the kitchen, occasionally coming out to greet their guests. Cheryl is absolutely delightful. She's warm, and has a great sense of humor, chatting and joking with the regulars. I had the blueberry pound cake, which was light. The cake and the glaze were not sweet which was a welcome surprise from the norm. The lavender cookie was unique and the iced coffee was bold. They offer an urn of iced cucumber water for guests as well. The owners are truly passionate about dessert and every detail of their bakery shows their devotion to making people smile.

Great not-so-little bakery just outside of reach from Savannah's Historic District (read: you'll need a car)! It's a beautiful little shop with great cupcakes and cookies! I indulged (naturally) and had the red velvet (amazing), the chocolate (a tad too bitter for me) and the vanilla (damn good)! Every local says it's the best bakery around--and I think they're right!

Before I was diagnosed with Crohn's, I was basically a baked goods connoisseur. Nowadays, I eat something sweet once a month, if I'm feeling particularly daring. I read about this place in some magazine a while back, and I had planned on coming in for my December treat of the month. Now, if you could only eat one sweet thing a month, I would not recommend taking a trip here. The store is in a horrible part of town. I currently live in downtown Atlanta, so use that as some perspective. My mother, my brother, and I did not feel comfortable parking on the street, but it was the only option. The store itself is nicely decorated with kitschy vintage pieces, but that's about this place's only attractive quality. After waiting five minutes to be helped despite being the only people in store, I ordered a red velvet cupcake, my mother ordered a lemon coconut cupcake, and my brother ordered a chocolate cupcake. The cupcakes were expensive, as recalled each one cost $3.50. Betty Crocker cupcakes from a box taste bounds better than these things. The cake of each was dry and tasted faintly of baking soda, and the frosting on each tasted chalky. None of us finished our cupcakes. We threw them in a trashcan right outside the store. Do not waste your money here. You're sure to be disappointed.

We went on a Tuesday and the selection was limited. But what was there was wonderful. The drunken blondie, the cream filled cookies, and the cupcakes were all fantastic. I purchased their cookbook as soon as it came out in March, and was hoping to taste the results of the recipes to see what I liked best. I saw Mrs. Day on the Paula Deen show, and immediately liked her wit and style. Good news I think the recipes are the real deal too. Second the bakery is a throw back in time with a retro, shabby chic decor but clean appearance. Everything was fresh. You can't miss on this one. A MUST GO!

VERY cute space and everything I tried was yummy. I wasn't wowed by the counter help but the service was fine. The main draw is definitely the decor and product. Pesto and fontina panini plus I added chicken at an additional cost: Very very good and quite large, easily shared by two ppl. Old Fashioned cupcake: the frosting was yummy and the cake moist with a nice flavor. Star brownie: very very chocolately and rich. Lemon bar: tart with a very nice dense crust 'Nana Pudding: omg delicious Peach Pie bar: tasted great but I wish it had more peaches in it. Yeah it's not Palm Beach but it's a typical urban transitional neighborhood. The hours are always in the middle of the day(9-5 which is strange for a bakery plus no Sundays) so it's not like you're going to be walking there at 2 am. There's lots of cars and foot traffic and you should be alert whenever you're out and about as bad things can happen anywhere. I'll def be back!

Yeah! this place is Cuuute and fun place to chill out for awhile. I found the cupcakes to be really good and worth the reasonable $3. The milk chocolate frosting is very rich and decadent. I also ordered a Mexican Chocolate cookie, loved it. The girls that work there are super cute too in their floral aprons and big smiles. And whoever says this place is in a sketchy neighborhood must live a sheltered life.

Rosemary Ciabatta Loaf is delicious. A friend and I shared a loaf over our coffee, and I even bought another loaf to bring home. Nice and chewy but soft inside with awesome rosemary flavor. Just the way I love my bread! Other friends that I was with seemed to enjoy the banana pudding and cupcakes. Its a bit pricey but not insane. Wish they had more varieties in cupcakes but overall nice bakery. The decor in the bakery is very cute. I really enjoyed the small arrangements of fresh flowers on the tables. Also a nice walk from Forsyth Park (20ish minutes) to BIDB.

Back in the Day was my favorite place to pick up a pastry because they were one of the few places with a savory pastry for breakfast. Now they serve sandwiches. They are served on fresh bread and pretty tasty. They have sweets that are pretty damn good too!

By far the best cupcake in Savannah... I'm a huge fan of the Red Velvet, Carrot Cake, and the chocolate with sea salt. The cake is moist and the icing isn't too sweet, which seems to be a problem at some other places in town. Not sure if it's intended or not, but the cake of the Old Fashioned's are a little drier and denser. Not really my thing, but the icing is just as delicious on this one as the rest and well- worth a taste. The sandwiches here are okay. They're good and everything, but not that sort of hard- core, nothing- else- will- do sort of good. Not like the cupcakes good. Boring- ish stuff: There is street parking, but I've never had trouble finding a space. Sometimes I've been disappointed because what I've been craving is out of stock in the early afternoon (but that just means fresh product, right?). The interior is like a shabby chic confection of an oasis... Stepping inside is like going on a vacation in the middle of the day. Nothing makes getting through an afternoon of work better than taking a cupcake break over a delicious cup of coffee with friends here. Run, do not walk : )

Considered walking here from river street....so glad we didn't, because it was quite far. About two miles from bay street towards an area of town you wouldn't expect it to be in. It's a small, cute, vintage feel type of place. Didn't have too large of a selection of sweets (macaroons, lavender cookies, three types of cupcakes, and sticky buns--only on Saturdays). The chocolate heaven cupcake and sticky bun were delish!

Went to BitDB for lunch with a serious craving for some salad. The salads all sounded good but they weren't serving any of them for some reason. Must have been out of lettuce. Instead, I ordered the Jambon Royal sandwich, a simple combination of ham, gruyere, and butter. Their bread was tasty but dusted with far too much flour. I didn't care for that at all. I ended up having to wipe the stuff off my face between bites. The sandwich would have been easily replicated at home and likely tasted better. I guess I didn't really go in looking for their more popular menu items (sweets and tea) so I can't comment on much of what people come in for but it's a huge let-down when the one item on the sandwich that wrecked it was the bread ... at a bakery. Lay off the dusting flour and it would have been okay. I also didn't see anything about cannoli on the menu. I hope I just missed it and they make it because I don't have any use for a bakery that doesn't do cannoli.

Well, I've always known about the wonderful bakery, I've lived up the street for almost two years now. I also drink coffee everyday, so it was no surprise that i stepped into Back in the Day for a cup and found it surprisingly warm. Usually I walk into independent coffee shops and feel snubbed if i don't know protocol, but they understood what i wanted. Best coffee I've ever had. I don't think I'll be rattling off my order into a Starbucks speaker box anytime soon. Awesome place.

With my big cupcake hunt, I decided to try this place. It had nice reviews and people seemed to like the cupcakes. If you're looking for cupcakes, I can say right here...it isn't the best. There was nothing memorable about it. The icing was too sweet and the texture more grainy than to my liking. The cake itself wasn't too bad, but again, not memorable. Maybe a 2-2.5 on a scale of 5. Their star brownie....not a star. A bite of that would send your blood sugar through the roof. Plus, it's texture was really doughy. I'd stay away from that one. Oh, and be ready to circle around a few times to find parking. Now onto the good points: The people are nice and it is a really cute place. The bakery also has some saving items. I'd say their quiche-like bar with tomatoes is out of the world. It is a perfect balance of flavors and texture. The underlying crust holds together nicely but then somehow crumbles in your mouth. If I had to rate that on its own, I'd say a 5. Unfortunately out of the three times I have been there, they've only carried that item once.

I went for the cupcakes and discovered more. As for the cupcakes I like the frosting because it wasn't overly sweet. The cake portion for my taste was a bit dry. The sticky bun wasn't good. It was very dry. The sandwiches are outstanding. In fact because I found this bakery to be a bit pricey. The sandwiches are the only thing I would go back to buy. Even the bread they use for the sandwiches is worth the price.

This place is a favorite! Their sweet treats are everything and more to write home about! Especially their red velvet and old fashioned cupcakes. Also- their lunch time sandwiches are AMAZING. Can't go wrong with this place! Also- if you are looking for an incredible loaf of bread- Try their Pugliese- you wont be disappointed!

Definitely not in the historic district but I love to wander when I'm in a new city and BITD gave me the perfect excuse for an excursion. They were sold out of cupcakes by 4:30pm but I bought a nana' pudding like people here suggested. It's pricey but DELICIOUS!!! Also bought a herbed ciabiatta that was wonderful, a macaroon and a lavender shortbread cookie for a long drive back to Atlanta. The vanillia chai was awesome too. Now I'm on a diet :)

MY FAVORITE RED VELVET CUPCAKE HANDS DOWN!!!! I live in new york now and still miss and crave these cupcakes (as well as the 'nana puddin') the brownies and cookies are also pretty good. I love their chicken sandwich as well. Anyone who calls this neighborhood dangerous is seriously sheltered. True the neighborhood is newly gentrified and as with most gentrified neighborhoods will take a while to "turnover" that said that neighborhood is a nice mix of artists, students, and the older african american community. Its southern charm at its best!

I seriously don't know what all these negative Nancys are talking about! The neighborhood that the bakery is located in is not dangerous! These people must live in gated communities with white picket fences. Yes, the neighborhood is urban and slightly underdeveloped. No, you aren't going to get mugged, murdered and thrown in a dumpster! Even if that was the case, I would risk life and limb to go to Back in The Day Bakery. The food is always fresh, delicious and made with love! From the baked goods to the sandwiches to the drinks...IT IS ALL AMAZING! The staff, including Cheryl and Griff bend over backwards to be welcoming and wonderful. This bakery was built with love and care and it shows! I LOVE BACK IN THE DAY!

This bakery is not just aesthetically pleasing, it is also incredibly delicious. Their cookies are to die for as are the cupcakes. They always have unique selections as well, like lavender shortbread cookie sandwiches with butter cream frosting...so good! They also serve lunch, which is quite tasty as well. I always try to make stop by when I am in town.

BEST RED VELVET CUPCAKE I'VE HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!! First off, this place is adorable!; decorated in mid-century meet shabby-chic decor its so cute! My cupcake was so moist and delicious and the coffee smooth. The girls who were working were bubbily and super nice. All in all I'd say it was the best coffee shop I visisted while in Savannah!

The old-fashioned cupcakes can't be beat (although one is more than enough sugar for me)! Their lemon squares, pumpkin bars and lattes are delicious, as well. The inside of the bakery is so adorable, retro and inviting. The employees were always friendly with me when I stopped in for a treat. I do wish they were open on Sundays, however. No real complaints here!

Best Cupcakes! Similar to Billy's in NYC. Moist with a little almond-y touch. I always get the Madras Chicken Curry Sandwich on Ciabatta. It is so good I have dreams about it.

Addictive. The Super Chicken sandwich is crazy good, especially if you add basil and extra extra lettuce. What can I say I'm a girl who likes her sandwich crispy. Best baked good sweet- old fashion with chocolate icing. Best baked good savory- ciabatta. My heart weeps that I can not still live in Savannah and eat this food.

WOW, I wish I could bring Back in the Day Bakery home with me! The curried chicken sandwich was unbelievably good - definitely something to write home about! Two sweet teas + one curried chicken sandwich (to share) + a cupcake or two + a drive out of town and voila! the perfect picnic! The only thing better would be to have Back in the Day in my hometown! I'd love to go back and just sit and read a book, while enjoying the delicious sandwiches, cupcakes, and tea. The ambiance was great - a bit like stepping into a different era, with awesome mismatched furniture and old farm tables. Service was fast and great and it was easy to find parking. Again, wish we had one at home!

Since I live only a few blocks from this bakery (in the gracefully named "Starland District"), I have visited it many times in the past year and a half. Although the decor is rather "precious", the old-timey theme is overall sweet and an upscale bakery/cafe is a welcome surprise in this impoverished (albeit "up-and-coming") neighborhood comprised mainly of discount liquor marts, barbershops, and a Popeye's fried chicken franchise. My main contention with this bakery is that it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Being from New York, I expect to visit the neighborhood bakery on Sunday morning to retrieve a box full of assorted pastries and treats for savoring over coffee & the Sunday Times. Alas, we are in Savannah, the land of blue laws, double parking in the streets during church, and a lack of culinary options come the Sabbath. Is it an issue of laziness or do all of your employees truly don their Sunday best and head to hear the good word come the Lord's Day of Rest, Back in the Day Bakery? On the days that they are open, Tuesday-Saturday, I have managed to sample a variety of their food items, both baked goods and food from their lunch menu. Honestly, both their red velvet and "old-fashioned" cupcakes (for which they are famous) are a bit dry. The ham & cheese pastry is one of the most delicious on-the-go breakfast foods I have ever had. The croissant the ham and cheese is wrapped in is perfectly flaky and both the meat and cheese is covered in the most pleasing amount of black pepper. It is exquisite. Be sure to arrive early in the day if you want to enjoy this, though. They run out of it by 11AM. Moving on to the lunch menu, the sandwich that stands out is most definitely the "Cheese Verite Panini". If you do order it, be sure to add the pickles and mustard. An unexpected touch on a grilled cheese? Definitely. But the amount of flavor they add is unprecedented. The Madras Curry Chicken sandwich is a bit overwhelming. I've had it once, enjoyed it, but won't ever order it again. The Caprese is very fresh-tasting, but nothing out of the ordinary. The new Sopresatta sandwich is extremely flavorful, especially if you add a bit of balsamic vinegar to it, but is so rich and heavy my stomach hurt for the entire day after eating it. In a city where fresh, well-made gourmet foods are few and far between, Back in the Day has become a staple.

This is a great little place that really goes out of its way to have some of the best tasting food in Savannah. If you need a cupcake or if you are looking for something more, the salads & sandwiches are fantastic. I highly recommend the Mozzarella Caprese sandwich. Plenty of street parking will make it easy to get in and out quickly. The only thing I would change is that it closes @ 3 on Saturday and is closed on Sunday & Monday. That is prime cupcake time! Oh well, i just have to plan better.

This was a late breakfast bakery stop. First, if should be said that I appreciate Back in the Day simply for its locale. It is a tad south of the tourist historic district, and it is clearly on the vanguard of efforts to revitalize other parts of Savannah. For that alone it should be praised and frequented, and one of the perks of that effort is the lovely "urban warehouse" decor of the place. It is a clearly a converted garage or storefront that is now a delicious bakery with great and eclectic furniture. If you show up at 11, as we did, the breakfast options are extremely limited. The cinnamon pastry I had was filling, tasty, and well balanced. My girlfriend went the sweets route and had a velvet cupcake that was tasty, although not necessarily different from other cupcakes. The breads all looked and smelled delicious, and the workers were extremely friendly. A lack of options stops me from giving this 5 stars, but I would still encourage a visit to this shop and its environs.

Simply the best. Cupcakes!!! The bread pudding was AWESOME! You have to go. Out of the way if you're downtown but well worth the drive.

This was my neighborhood lunch spot. Awesome food. A little expensive but everything is top quality. Also: Mexican Coke!

My new favorite bakery to cruise for a sandwich for lunch, a box of cupcakes, or cute cooking inspired knickknacks for gifts. The breakfast offerings - scones, muffins - change daily but you can usually count on there being a basic banana nut muffin or cinnamon scone. There's free Wi-Fi in the bakery if you want to sip and surf on the premises. Don't forget to grab a loaf of fresh baked bread or a little bag of mojito shortbread cookies for the road!

the baked goods are great for the genre. as good as anything you'll find in nyc or san fran. but they're phenomenally over-priced, and there's a ton of attitude in the place that can be a big buzz kill. (though we do love many of the folks who work there.)

BEST banana pudding ever! Great sandwiches & pastries. They even have Mexican Cokes (with cane sugar). Service is friendly, but not warm. Prices are very good for the quality. The neighborhood is not what it used to be and is quite comfortable.
